Harmonicity Program Note Harmonicity represents the ratio between harmonics and noise in a sound. This piece explores the harmonics and noise which can arise from the cello's lowest string. Cyclical gestures framed in different settings continually come back to slowly morph the piece from start to end. The prime numbered overtones exist within the structure and rhythm of the piece as well, highlighted by the common denominator of all music: Phi (ÎŚ), or the golden section.

Harmonic glissandi are notated with a dashed line. In measure 55 (Violin I) and measure 57 (Viola), the bow should be rapidly drawn across the three lowest strings, while glissing up and down the fingerboard to achieve a shower of harmonics that rise and fall together. Precise rhythm or contour is not necessary.

Overpressure technique appears in several parts. This is also notated with a nested downbow symbol, to emphasize the bow pressure necessary to achieve this effect. The effect should still have some fundamental tone/pitch in the sound, but have the "crunch" sound associated with overpressure.
