Good bye winter and hello spring and summer. It seemed like the winter that would never end.

The older I get the less I enjoy winter and I find the worst month to get through is February. I feel it’s time to make plans to have a trip south during the month. I am quite fond of Vegas but the weather there in February isn’t hot, I am searching for hot!

I hope to also make a trip up to Georgian Bay this summer and perhaps a drive out west. I was all the way to Vancouver and over to the island when I was a child on a family trip. The memories are faint although I do remember the beauty of what I seen, and I was fascinated by the wildlife such as bears sitting on the side of the road.

The most impressive site to me was Banff, I couldn’t stop staring at the beauty of Lake Louise, it was breathtaking and even as a child of eleven years I remember appreciating what a site it was. Summers always evoke wonderful

memories or childhood and the kids I grew up with.

Summer night meant all of us (about 10 kids) playing a game of hide and seek and feeling disappointed when our parents would call us in. We never wanted the game to end.

There were park openings every spring and I grew up in Oshawa and the park we belonged to was Willowdale park. There would be games, rides, food and a street dance at night to celebrate the start of summer. It saddens me when I realize the kids today don’t get to experience what we did as children.

Those were the best years and made the best memories.

I hope your summer is filled with memories that your children will share for years to come.

Keep it clean Surprisingly, not everyone is after top dollar when it comes to selling their home. I’ve put in a lot successful offers that may not have been the highest, but they were the cleanest. A clean offer with preapproved financing, especially in a multipleoffer scenario, shows the seller that you are serious. While conditions often get waived in a bidding war, I strongly advise you not to waive the house inspection if possible. Personally speaking, I think that home inspections should be regulated and inspections should be mandatory as part of the buying process. An option could be to complete the inspection prior to making an offer.

SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL

Container Gardening Almost anything can grow in containers if you give them the attention, water and nutrients that can deplete easily. Containers also allow you to create a garden at different elevations by using antique chairs, stools, or other re-purposed items.

Painting re-purposed items can create a cohesive foundation for the colour you are introducing in the containers.

1. CHOOSE YOUR CONTAINERS WISELY Cheap plastic can deteriorate in the sun and is not meant for longevity, although its light weight is a plus. Terracotta pots are stronger, but dry out rapidly, so they often require more watering. If you opt for glazed ceramic pots (or any other salvaged container, like a teapot, small wheelbarrow or even an old bucket), remember to drill drainage holes in the bottom.

Large containers are best as you are not watering as often.

3. PLAN BEFORE YOU PLANT Where you place your containers will depend on the types of flowers or vegetables you’re growing. Some plants need full sun, while others prefer a little (or a lot of ) shade. The beauty of container gardening is that you can move pots to more favourable conditions if they’re not thriving in their original location. Similarly, plan within the container. If you’re planting different flowers in one pot, consider how you would plant flowers in a backyard garden: taller ones in back and shorter ones in front. For containers, work from the inside out. Larger, taller plants should go in the middle and trailing flowers should be placed closer to the outside edges. Also, make sure to group plants with similar growing conditions.

2. CREATIVE CONTAINERS Whether you decide to use a classic terracotta pot or bust out an old boot or tire as a home for your flower or herb garden, make sure all surfaces are clean before you plant. This is especially important if you’re buying second hand containers or repurposing items that might have housed diseased plants.

Use an environmentally friendly all-purpose cleaner to scrub your pots, then rinse and dry before planting.

6. WATER REGULARLY - AND THEN WATER SOME MORE You’ll find that you need to water container plants more often than the rest of your garden. Especially during heat waves and in dry climates, this likely means watering daily. Each time you water, keep going until you see water coming out the drainage holes at the bottom of your pot. This is the time to stop, before soil becomes soggy or water is left standing, but it also ensures a generous drink. For those who can’t make the commitment to water daily, self-watering containers are necessary, as they have a reservoir at the bottom to keep your plants moist for a few days at a time.

4. FERTILIZE, FERTILIZE, FERTILIZE To get big and beautiful flowers in a container, you must keep the nutrient level maxed out “I fertilize every time I water -- what a difference!” For vegetables, be sure to use manure tea. It sounds disgusting, but it’s natural and won’t leave chemicals on your plentiful crops. Manure tea is essentially water extract from manure with soluble nutrients. It builds the organic content of your soil, which improves drainage and helps soil hold nutrients and will give the best results for herbs since it is loaded with nitrogen.

5. “ROTATE” YOUR CROPS Planting different vegetables in the same containers has the same effect as farmers rotating their crops: different plants

7. CHOOSE THE BEST POTTING MIX Ideally, everyone could simply shovel soil right from the garden into containers and grow full, healthy plants.

Unfortunately, this is not the case: garden soil is usually too heavy and contains too much clay, which will hold moisture in pots, drowning the roots. For containers, opt for something more porous. Garden centres sell packaged potting soil perfect for container gardening.

Something old, Something new

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in my shoe! Have you ever wondered where that delightful little wedding rhyme originated, and what it means? More so than most occasions, weddings are steeped in rituals and superstitions, and some of these customs date as far back as the Victorian Era. Queen Victoria, who’s most enduring image is that of a petite old lady, dressed in black, mourning her beloved Albert, was in fact a trend setter and fashionista of her time, not unlike Diana was in our time. If Victoria wore it, the dressmakers and jewellers set to and copied her every style. It was she who popularized white wedding gowns and the playing of Wagner’s bridal chorus at weddings. In the wedding rhyme, the “something old” represents continuity, “something new” symbolizes optimism for the future, “something borrowed” symbolizes borrowed happiness and “something blue” represents purity and fidelity. And alas, a sixpence in my shoe signifies prosperity and good fortune.

If you are planning a wedding this year, here are a few old superstitions that may shed a clue to your future. If you want good weather on the day of your nuptials, try planting a statue of the boy Christ in the hedge in the back garden, and if you want a heat wave you must bury it! If the bride hears a cuckoo on the way to the church, this is good. If she sees three magpies this is great, but, if she crosses paths with a chimney sweep , she is set for life. The chimney sweep superstition springs from two legends of old. It is said that in 1066, King William S P R I N G / S U M M E R

of Britain’s life was saved by a chimney sweep who halted a startled horse and carriage that was heading straight for the king. The King was so grateful to the sweep for saving his life, he invited him to his daughter’s wedding. The second tale is of a similar story and involves King George and a galloping horse. Whichever tale is correct, to this day people of the British Isles hire chimney sweeps to wait outside the church to greet the newlyweds! Carrying the bride over the threshold was done just in case of evil spirits were waiting at the front door. The throwing of coins by the groom was a gesture made, even though the bride brought a dowry into the wedding, and the size of the dowry dictated the calibre of groom that the matchmaker could work with. The bigger the dowry the better the lifestyle, position in society, size of farm, number of servants etc. The gesture of the groom throwing the coins meant that he didn’t need the dowry. If the bride was younger than her unmarried sister, then the sister was expected to dance barefoot at the wedding if she had any hopes of finding a husband.

And now the honeymoon! The honeymoon refers to the month after the wedding, when the newlyweds celebrated with a brew made with fermented honey and it was to last until the next full moon. The top tier of the wedding cake was to be preserved and eaten upon the christening of the first born. So, having said all of this, if you follow all the signs and omens, you should be ok!

But don’t be fooled… Often the amount of work and technical requirements that go into putting together these elaborate focals far outweighs the cost of simpler, flower-abundant creations. Our advice, consult with your florist to get a better idea of budget before you set your heart on a green wall.

Hanging centrepieces do require substantial setup time so they can seem heavy on the budget in that respect but, in my humble opinion, it is money well spent and there are other clever ways of maximising the effect without maxing out the credit card.

4. METALLICS Shimmering metallics including gold, rose gold and copper are included in flowers, vases, candle holders, light fittings, table cloths, monograms, and more. The effect adds an incredible wow factor, whether matt or shiny, sparkly, or glittery. The warmth of most metallic tones means it can work with a myriad of colours and more especially the warmer colours we’ve been seeing emerging more in wedding flowers of late but it also looks amazing with neutrals and soft pastels and plenty of brides are opting for this combo. Gold has the effect of adding grandeur… and who doesn’t want their wedding to be remembered as grand?!

3. MORE COLOUR Brides are getting brave when it comes to colour and far more are opting for bold colour combinations in their flowers and décor. So, while some are going totally green others are going down a somewhat unfamiliar path for many past brides of including bright and more dominant colours such as marsala.

I’d suggest these bolder pantones need to be paired down with softer pastels of the same tonal variations and usually one complimentary colour to add pop. Now ‘complimentary’ may sounds deceiving as it sounds like the two colours would sit next to each other on the colour wheel and be best friends but a complimentary colour is one that sits opposite and offers the most amount of contrast to any given colour. Do opposites attract sound familiar? To give you an example I think part of the reason the recent love of coral was so popular must do with the fact that more often than not it was paired with blue greys or tones of lilac and cornflower blue, which even in the smallest proportion, would serve to create a high level of contrast and cause the coral to pop out against it. I think that colour theory for weddings must be quite carefully thought through so that is has the desired effect, otherwise is can become too much and overwhelm the eye.

5. FLOWER ARCHES OR BACKDROPS WITH A DIFFERENCE Some very creative ideas are emerging and developing from the use of a traditional arch into more conceptual arches or rather backdrops, something to stand in front of instead of under. With the laws no longer dictating that one needs to

be standing ‘under’ a covering and only requires that the legal part of the ceremony happens indoors, this has freed people up to spread their wings in the ceremony focal department. Have a look at a few of these for some great ideas. Just take note though, that while some of these don’t appear particularly flower heavy, anything that requires climbing up a ladder for an extended period to hang floor length garlands of blooms is bound to rack up the setup bill. My suggestion, keep it simple.

You can still have a trendy wedding on a budget, it just might not be the one you saw on Pinterest, dripping with orchids and peonies. And if budget’s not an issue, go wild!

While it is very effective, it’s not that great when the stress is chronic. The other unfortunate thing is that our body can’t differentiate between a “good” stress and a “bad” stress. To your body, stress is stress – and there is no shortage of stress when it comes to planning a wedding! The increases in hormones, especially when long term, can also effect how our skin looks. The best way to combat stress is to manage it before it starts – you want to be able to set your stress management techniques to auto pilot when the stress kicks in. You can try a few minutes a day of deep breathing exercises, meditation, or burning off some steam with exercise… or you can combine all three with a yoga class!

3. HYDROTHERAPY This is a pretty broad umbrella, as it covers all the different ways water can be used for therapeutic benefit. While it may seem obvious, drinking enough water is incredibly important for your overall health – including the health of your skin. Keeping you hydrated helps to keep your skin hydrated. Try adding some lemon to your water in the morning for some extra health and

skin benefits, or fruit and herbs for some extra flavor if you need a change of pace.

Another great way to improve your skin with hydrotherapy is to use an infrared sauna. Unlike a traditional sauna, an infrared sauna uses light to penetrate the skin to stimulate sweating and lymphatic circulation to help the body detoxify. This results in a dry heat that is more comfortable than a traditional sauna with increased health benefits.

Heat oven to 350°.

Grease 2 (9” x 5” x 2¾”) loaf pans with butter and dust with flour; set aside.

Whisk flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl; set aside.

In a separate bowl, whisk sugar, oil, and eggs.

Pour wet ingredients over dry ingredients and whisk until just combined.

Stir in strawberries and pour batter into prepared pans.

If using jam, spoon ¼ cup over each loaf and using a knife, swirl jam into batter.

Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle of the loaves comes out clean, about 1 hour.

Let cool for 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

GRILLED CHEESE ROLL UPS YIELD : 8 SERVINGS

PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES

COOK TIME: 10 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 20 MINUTES

So much easier/tastier than traditional grilled cheese!

3 ingredients is all you need for this epic cheesiness!

INGREDIENTS : 8 slices white bread, crusts trimmed 8 slices cheddar cheese* 1/4 cup unsalted butter

DIRECTIONS : Using a rolling pin, flatten bread squares to 1/4-inch thickness.

Place cheese slice on top of each slice of bread, rolling up tightly.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium high heat.

Working in batches, add roll ups to the skillet, cooking until all sides are golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes, adding more butter as needed.

Serve immediately.

What Not to Wear After the Age 50 Written by Michelle Combs Freelance writer/blogger

Google ‘what not to wear after age 50’ and you will have your pick of thousands of articles telling you what looks terrible on your tired old ass body.I want to point out to the writer who wrote the ‘no-no’ article, you need to remember you are writing for women over age 50, not preschoolers. I don’t think I’ve said ‘no-no’ since my youngest was a toddler.We could spend hours studying the clothes we shouldn’t wear and the slang we shouldn’t use and the makeup techniques we need to retire.

Here’s me, weighing in on this topic.

You are over 50! Wear whatever you want. If you’ve made it to 50 and still need to consult articles on how to dress appropriately then you are so missing out on one of the best things about being over 50. One of the best things about getting older is realizing that we don’t have to spend our energy worrying what other people think and we get to be comfortable in our own skin with our own freak flags.

Still, there are a few things that women over 50 really shouldn’t wear: The weight of the world.

When you wear the weight of the world on your shoulders, you age. If you like the feel of the world’s weight and don’t want to give it up, then try scaling back a bit. Perhaps just wear the weight of a few of the smaller continents. For instance, I am only wearing the weight of Australia and a made-up country called ‘Michelloponia’. I think it has a very slimming effect.

Shame and regret.

So, few people can carry this look off. Most of us just end up looking haunted or like we were forced to eat liver and onions. Shame and regret are especially hard to wear after fifty. Wearing shame and regret past fifty is one of those things that make your eyes all red and runny looking.

The downward spiral just snowballs from there. Once the eyes get old lady looking, then you have to re-evaluate the wisdom of black eye liner. I say give up wearing shame and regret and stick with the black eye liner.

Rose colored glasses.

Oh, sweetheart, you know who you are. Those glasses do nothing for you. Not only do they make you look like S P R I N G / S U M M E R

you’ve been smoking weed for days, they also keep you from examining life and your surroundings realistically.

Yes, reality sucks, but by the time we hit fifty, we need to suck it up, take those glasses off and knock reality into submission. Or just get some really big dark sunglasses instead. They cover all manner of sins.

Stiff upper lip.

There is a time and a place for the stiff upper lip, but damn, it can’t be worn all the time. Too much stiff upper lip causes those funky vertical lines between your upper lip and your nostrils. We don’t always have to be stoic. I’m not suggesting that you wear your heart on your sleeve, but that is a much softer look than wearing a stiff upper lip.

Too many hats.

Personally, I can’t pull off wearing one hat much less many hats. I don’t have a hat head. My hair poofs out and my ears look like car doors when I wear a hat. Wearing too many hats just exacerbates these issues. When you wear too many hats, it’s easy to forget which hat you’re wearing. For instance, are you wearing the ‘no nonsense corporate’ hat when you meant to wear your quirky and kicked back’ hat?

We’re not getting any younger, you know. Sooner or later you’re going to accidentally wear your court jester hat to the gynecologist and then where will you be? I’ll tell you where you’ll be. You’ll be in an undignified position and wearing a stupid hat is where you’ll be.

Resting Bi**ch Face hahahaha. Just kidding. Wear that one all you want.

Although, it wouldn’t hurt if every once in a while, you had a welcoming and kind look on your face. At least that’s what I hear from other people.

There isn’t anything wrong with getting advice about updating your look or what to wear, but we are just inundated with advice aren’t we?

Who says what is appropriate? From where I sit, it seems ‘appropriate’ changes based on geography, social status, income, and size. After a while, the advice becomes a confusing blur. I think I’ll just keep wearing my Keds and jeans and black tee shirts.

Oh, I do have one real tip. Stop wearing holiday theme clothes. Seriously
