I moved to Lindsay just over a year ago, and it quickly became my home. I have many fond memories from early days as my family is from here. My grandmothers, parents, and extended family were either born right in town or in the surrounding villages. My maternal grandmother use to work on the Ross Memorial Hospital, my maternal grandfather was a police office and my paternal grandfather spent many years employed at Fee Motors, which was located on Kent and Victoria.

I hope you enjoy the articles and visit my advertisers. Small business is what keeps this town moving forward and supports the preservation of it’s history. I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to all my advertisers for being part of this first edition. I would also like to thank my columnists for lending their expertise. And to you my readers, for your encouragement and excitement. Until Spring, have a safe and happy winter.

In some ways, it hasn’t changed. The downtown still boasts original architecture which is what makes it so charming, it has a Norman Rockwell appeal, especially in the winter.

Growing Herbs Indoors Fresh herbs make your food sing. If you love to have fresh herbs at your fingertips, here are some tips to keep them growing. Light Your room’s exposure has a big impact on how much good light your plants receive. An eastern exposure is wonderful because it provides clear, bright light that isn’t too hot. Western and southern exposures are also effective, although they are sometimes at risk for becoming too hot and bright during the summer season. The least effective exposure comes from the north. Northern exposures have weak light, and plants near northern facing windows are at risk of getting too little light to stay healthy. Plants need at least six hours of good light each day. The light should be bright enough for your hand to create a well-defined shadow when you pass it between the window and your plants

Keeping Herbs Watered The right water regime is crucial for plants to thrive. Water is an area where one size does not fit all. You have to experiment for a couple of weeks to see what watering schedule each of your plants need. The finger test is still a great way to tell if your plants need water. Stick your finger into the dirt near the rim of your plant’s pot to a depth of about an inch and a half. If your finger comes out dry, it’s time to water. If your finger is moist, wait a day or two and try again.

Fertilize Herbs Sparingly and Use good Potting Soil Plants need nutrients in their soil and occasionally through the addition of fertilizer. Herbs are usually less prone to needing frequent feedings, but they still need a quality potting mix and some fertilizer incorporated into their water occasionally. If you are over wintering outdoor potted herbs inside, be sure to check them for pests before you relocate them. You should also stop fertilizing them as frequently as they will be experiencing some shock from the move and won’t need as much nourishment over the winter anyway.

Harvesting Indoor Herbs Use restraint when harvesting your indoor herbs. Pay attention to new growth, and try to avoid taking more than half. If you discover that isn’t enough, it’s time to get another plant.

HAIR CARE BY MONICA KERCHL WITH RACHEL KERCHL Co-Owner of Thairapy Beauty Bar

It is with great pleasure that I accepted an invite from Your Town Lindsay to write this beauty column on behalf of Thairapy Beauty Bar. My business partner and sister in law, Rachel Kerschl and I, have been in the beauty industry for many years. Upon my return home, we decided to join forces and open a salon in our beautiful town of Lindsay. Many of our clients have questions for us about styling techniques, hair trends, and product recommendations, especially one in particular, Olaplex. So, I thought I’d answer some questions today about it, to clear up the mystery that it is.

So, what is OLAPLEX? Olaplex is a three-step system used in conjunction with our lightener and colour to help protect and prevent, and in some cases, reverse damage to the hair. It is a bond rebuilder that immediately begins to rebuild the hair after just one use. We have the power to bleach brighter, colour more, and improve the overall condition of the hair. Number one and two are used in our colours

and lighteners, or as a stand-alone treatment in the salon, and number three is available for purchase at Thairapy to take home and use as a weekly treatment.

Is Olaplex safe? It is completely safe!! Olaplex is free of silicones, sulfates, phthalates, DEA, aldehydes, and is never tested on animals.

Is Olaplex right for my hair? It is right for all hair types! It’s a complete game changer for stylists when it comes to colouring our clients’ hair, allowing us to push the envelope further, and not compromise the integrity of the hair. At Thairapy Beauty Bar, we take pride in not just how our clients look when they get their hair done, but how their hair feels afterwards. For that reason, we use Olaplex on every client that has colour or hilites.

so many years had done a lot of damage. When the amazing women at Thairapy, Monika and Rachel told me of the benefits of Olaplex, I thought, why not? The results were immediate. My hair feels thicker, has more shine and has grown longer, now that I’m not having so much breakage! Thanks ladies!” Olaplex is revolutionary, and is one of a kind with the technical advancements. To discover the benefits for yourself call for your own Olaplex experience. Feel free to drop me a line at monikakerschl@gmail. com, should you have any questions regarding this, or anything else we do at Thairapy Beauty. Watch for our next column in May, one of your questions just may be answered in the next edition of Your Town Lindsay. Until next time,

Here is what one of our lovely clients had to say: “I am ‘blessed’ with naturally curly dark hair. So, wearing it straight and blonde for

Three major paint suppliers have come out with their 2017 Colour of the Year Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year is Shadow (2117-30). A blend of sophistication and mystery. It evokes thoughts of “yesteryear”, while it works well in a contemporary setting.

Dulux announced their Colour of the Year is Denim Drift. This hue is a perfect balance of a blue-gray which is a perfect foundation for supporting tones. You will discover how adaptable this colour is.

Sherwin-Williams announced their choice for Colour of the Year is “Poised Taupe” (SW 6039) . This is the perfect blend of brown and gray making it work with either cool or warm tones. Its presence provides a perfect back drop for neutrals and dramatic shades.

“The man who can see all gray, and red, and purples in a peach, will paint the peach rightly round and right altogether. But the man who has only studied its roundness may not see its purples and grays, and if he does not will never get it to look like a peach; so that great power over colour is always a sign of large general art intellect. - John Ruskin 10

LET’S TALK FASHION

THE ART OF The seasons are changing and there is a definite crispness in the air. It is that time of year when most of us pack away the last of our warm weather clothing to make room in our closets for our winter wardrobes. This transition can be difficult for some, in large part due to the fact that winter styles can often be darker in hue. This can easily be remedied by adding a pop of colour to your outfit with bright accessories and layered pieces. The best part about cooler weather is that you can finally wear those multiple layers to stay warm and cozy but also make a fashion statement too. Let’s be honest, we live in a small town and while we want to stylish, it is just not practical in our everyday lives to dress like we just walked off a runway. So how can we do this? Be comfortable, yet very fashionable for winter? Let us start with the art of layering. We are going to call it an art because there really is no right or wrong way to do it. Just like the fine arts, layering is open to interpretation and can be very individual. What makes fashion so exciting is that we all have different tastes and can make a popular look our very own by changing up the accessories, footwear, or even colours, prints and textures we pair with it.

BY REBEKAH MCCRACKEN Owner of Hamilton Creek

Email your fashion questions to hamiltoncreek@bellnet.ca for your chance to have yours answered in next issue.

We all know that woman that looks effortlessly chic every day she leaves her house. While we secretly want to loathe her, we are also envious of her too. Do you think she has all the answers to our fashion dilemmas? No, but she has confidence to try new things and I bet you she is layering this winter. Let us start with a simple way to copy her look. For work, think a tone on tone printed dress pant, paired with a soft knitted sweater in colours that suit you. Or for weekend, or more casual wear, a great pair of jeans or leggings. Find basics that make you feel good and fit well to be your foundation. These are the pieces to splurge on. From here we can layer with a printed vest, textured scarf, a poncho/wrap, sweater coat or funky jacket to build on that basic foundation outfit. Add a chucky necklace and your favourite boots and you are mastering the art. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you are out shopping. The sales staff is there to help you to be the best version of you, on the runway of life. Have fun layering! Until next time,

Rebekah

CONSIDERING A

Fireplace? NOT SURE WHERE TO BEGIN? Adding or upgrading a fireplace can be an excellent investment. Giving warmth and ambiance to enjoy for years to come and value to your home. The National Association of Homebuilder states, fireplaces are one of the top three features new homeowners want. Most new homes today have at least one fireplace in the plans but upgrading from the basic builder’s model can completely change the look and feel of your space. Fireplaces are now as much about ambiance as they are functionality and can be found all throughout the home. There is nothing like the warmth and glow while lounging around the fireplace

Depending on their location these fireplaces are easily installed requiring only an exterior vent and are the easiest to use with the flick of a switch. Prefer the look and ease of a gas fireplace but don’t want the heat? There are also options for this. A natural gas fireplace is the most popular of choices in new homes. With the widest of selection in fireplace types a gas or propane fireplace can be installed in any room and can be made the most beautiful focal point with the right choice or finishing to create the perfect space. Many older homes have rooms which are cold. Installing a fireplace or stove can eliminate these cold spots in a cost-efficient manner.

If you’ve decided that a fireplace is just what your home needs, then the next step is to decide which one is for you. Fireplaces offer a great deal of versatility with many designs and sizes ranging from traditional to modern in all fuel types such as natural gas, liquid propane, wood or pellet. Wood-burning fireplaces can provide the most heat and require a chimney that needs to be vertically installed.

The most economical choice is electric fireplaces. These portable plug-and-play units can be installed yourself. Either directly hung on the wall, partially or completely recessed. Electric fireplaces consist of LED lighting and have the capability of heating around 200-500 square feet. With all the selections, available today, be sure to consider all the options before you buy.

WRITTEN BY JEN ROBERTS Owner of Southern Comfort Hearth & Home

Wood-burning fireplaces require some labour with chopping (or buying) wood, stacking, bringing it into the home and cleaning up ash. A wood fireplace or stove, with the right placement can heat your entire home and many of our customers find this the most valuable option. Gas fireplaces (or propane) are considered area heaters and are much more economical.

HOME INSPIRATION

Changing with the Seasons

BY ANETTE TARGOWSKI Owner of Casual Luxury Interiors

As I drink a hot cup of tea, wrapped in my favourite throw to protect against the morning chill of the autumn weather, I contemplate what I should do first; plant the gorgeous dark burgundy and fiery red mums in the garden or start changing the covers on the throw pillows, and replace the light hued courtains with richer, more texturized versions of the same. Looking at the refreshing blue sky and seeing how it amazingly contrasts with the rich colours of rust, reds, oranges and browns on the trees, I reflect back to when I was a child, and took upon myself to do the same at my parents’ house. Not to the same extend, of course, nevertheless, furniture and the few accessories we had were moved around, and it all gave a feeling of a new space, cozy and ready to wrap us in its warm embrace over the upcoming cold winter months. Over those few moments of planning what would go where, and doing the work, I was transformed to a magical place, feeling the warmth spread from around my heart to my entire body. Since then, changing the house décor from winter to summer and vice versa has become my tradition. Something I look forward to every year and something I encourage my clients to try as well. Finishing my tea, I decide that I will work on the inside, considering the fact that the promise of a warmer afternoon might bring a very enjoyable gardening experience, probably one of the last ones this year. Often times when I see a client I ask if they change their home’s décor from one season to the other. Sadly, majority of the time the answer is a confused ‘no’ followed by ‘…what do you mean’? RE-PURPOSE & RE-USE For all you TeaToneE iDIYERSw or uQ anE DoNinH mrTt timers. These are some great ideas on how to re-invent those items you either mnd at a great seDond hand shoQ or it has been sitting in your basement collecting dust.

This is a fun way to bring new light to an old lamp. You can remove the harp, and cut back the wires. You can use a piece of decorative paper, tape or ribbon to cover the sleeve that holds the light bulb.

You can usually find a small candle holder at the dollar store that will either fit inside or you place it on top of the lamp base. Use a strong adhesive such as gorilla glue to be sure your pieces stay together. Choose your paint colour and give it a couple of coats. Distressing the piece lightly creates a nice look.

Old window frames can be used in many ways throughout your home. Using it as a gallery for some of your favorite family photos, or you can create a gallery just with the window frames on their own. The patina some of these frames have developed over the years of built up paint and exposure to the elements works well in a rustic or shabby chic dĂŠcor. You can also back them with board and paint them up with chalk board paint, creating the perfect message centre for your family.

When you are able to find the window frames large enough, they can be used to frame a piece of art, such as this. W I N T E R / S P R I N G

When fabricating dentures it is extremely important to communicate all of your wants and needs with the practitioner. Each item should be thoroughly discussed and met without compromising the case. During the third appointment tooth colour and the amount of tooth showing will be discussed using a bite block made of wax. Premium teeth are also very important as there are many different manufacturers of teeth. A premium tooth will have several layers within the tooth giving it a very natural look. The try in stage is when the teeth are set up in a wax base and the patient will be able to see exactly how the finished product will look. It is at this appointment any changes can be made to ensure satisfaction of the patient.

How do dentures affect my appearance? A prosthesis is made to replace what has been lost. Teeth are what keep the muscles in your face in the proper position. Your teeth also stop your lower jaw from coming too far up to meet your top jaw. If your teeth have been worn down, the lower jaw will reposition itself; coming too far up to meet your top jaw. This effect gives a person the appearance of having no teeth at all and overclose causing more wrinkles at the corners of the mouth. If the denture teeth have been worn out for many years it is quite common to have a protrusive bite. This is when the lower jaw over laps the top jaw giving a person a very prominent chin.

are many options to replace the tooth and the practitioner should discuss each one with the patient.

What happens if I don’t have enough bone to support implants? This is a question that is all too common. Over the years the materials and procedures available have changed drastically giving us many more options. We have come across many patients that have been told there is not enough bone to support an implant. Unless you have had an oral ct scan to determine bone quality and amount of bone available, it is difficult to say you are not a candidate. A proper treatment plan with the right diagnostic information is the only way to decide if an implant is right for you. There are also many graft materials available that can help if bone levels are not sufficient. We have noticed the impact implants have on ones quality of life.

Im only missing one tooth and it doesn’t bother me. Why should I replace it? What we forget is that every tooth has a purpose. Teeth will begin to migrate or shift when there is no opposing or adjacent force. The one missing tooth can lead to many more in the future as the opposing tooth may supraerupt causing occlusal issues and root exposure. There W I N T E R / S P R I N G
