Our goal with the Corunna Connection is to create a platform for Corunna residents and students to connect. We do not have staff writers and are counting on YOU to provide us with stories & photos of newsworthy people and events. Some space limitations may apply and we reserve the right to limit or reject any insertions into this paper. Corunna is where our kids go to school. This is the town we love and our hope is that as you read each edition of The Corunna Connection, your love and appreciation for what a great community we have will continue to grow. The Corunna Connection was created as a platform for Corunna residents and students to connect. Over the past few years the new owners have tried to add a more diverse content to the paper, as well as starting up a website. We were, and are, still the ONLY printed version of Corunna Only news around. Since the beginning, the paper hasn’t had staff writers, just volunteers that have sent in photos and stories of newsworthy events and people. We count on YOU, the READERS (parents, grandparents, alumni, etc.) to submit photos and stories to us. We also have a great relationship with Corunna Public Schools. Information is sent every month to us from the administration building, the athletic director and coaches. As our kids get older and continue to play sports, we are just getting busier and busier. This makes it a lot harder us to find the time to track down information for stories and to sell ads to pay for the paper. We as owners do NOT get paid. Adver-tising money goes to pay for the printing of the paper. We have two great student writers that were recommended by Corunna High English & Yearbook Teacher Jessica Hilewsky. We are happy to help these stu-dents that might be interested in becoming a journalist or English major someday. It’s our hope that with a printed version they can add copies to their portfolio. While these students are doing a great job, they have homework, play multiple sports, have jobs, and are involved in other clubs. They can’t cover everything, or even ¼ of the events that happen each month. We appreciate you, the readers, but we need your help. You don’t have to be a journalist or English major to help. If you are attending a sporting event, or club event, and something is happening that you think should be in the Corunna Con-nection, pull out your phone, take a photo and email it to corunnaconnec-tion@gmail.com with a short description of what it is. That’s it. We pride ourselves on communicating the great things that Corunna kids are doing. Our kids go to school and play sports at Corunna so we want to continue to be able to bring the Cavalier community a print version of the Corunna Connection. For more information about how you can contribute or support the paper and your children, text or call Missi (989) 666-1340.

WE NEED YOU

fattal’s forum So I spent time this past month reminiscing with members of the 1980 Corunna basketball team (my brother George was the starting point guard on that championship team, and he invited some of them over to preview a documentary/video scrapbook he made of that memorable season). Listening to Phil Annese, Jim Koenig, Jeff Rowley and my brother George share story after story about their athletic teams, high school (and elementary) classes, coaches and teachers cemented in my mind one (of the many) reasons why Corunna is such a super school district. That is just one example of how we do a great job of linking the past to the present. Our students hear about the accomplishments of former classes and graduates. Our athletes hear stories about our many (too many to be named here) championship athletic teams. I mean, when you really sit down and think about it, the rich tradition we have here at Corunna is, in my opinion, unprecedented. And September 20 and 21 was just another prime example of how we link the past to the present, as we recognized our FIRST inductees into our Athletic Hall of Fame. It was fantastic reconnecting with some of my teammates from the 1983 state championship basketball team, in addition to hearing some stories from the 1947 and 1955 state championship football teams. It was also special to hear stories from Nick Annese’s family, Jamie Krzyminski, Jerry Dutcher, and Frank Corrin. How we connect the past to the present is just one more reason why young or old, it’s GREAT to be Gold!

Cavalier recognition Zach Schwab was recognized as our Employee of the Month in August. Evan Roka, Carter Lovejoy, Ben Jacobs, Mason Warner, Lexi Mort, Lilly Bower, Lilly Evans, Mariah Dunkin, Hannah Hollister, and Elizabeth Norris received commendations for being all-state athletes last spring, and the entire girls track and field team was recognized for winning a state championship last spring. Brian Kiesling and Casie Forbush were recognized as our September Employee(s) of the Month. Stadium lights The lights for the Nick Annese field have been installed! They look spectacular! We could literally host night track meets if we so choose, because the pole vault and discuss area are so well lit up! Again, it is estimated this will save the district $13,747 annually and will pay for itself within 5-6 years. Faith Butcher Matt Brechwald, an agricultural broadcaster, contacted me earlier this summer to let me know he interviewed Faith Butcher as the featured guest on episode #655 of the Off-Farm Income Podcast last week. “This young lady is a credit to your school district, Corunna High School and your FFA program,” he said. If you would like to listen to the interview, you can listen on iTunes or Spotify.

Miscellany Vaping I want to publicly thank the City of Corunna for working with us to create a City Ordinance prohibiting the use of electronic smoking devices on school and adjacent public properties. We just recently saw bi-partisan action by Governor Gretchen Whitmer at the state level and President Trump at the national level addressing this epidemic as well. It’s nice to see that our local politicians helped initiate ways to keep our children safe before those at the state and national levels. Apptegy We will be rolling out a new app for mobile phones by November 1, in addition to having a new website. This was approved at the Board level last year. Staff/parents/students/ community members/ Cavalier alumni from around the world will be able to stay up-to-date with access to real-time sports scores, the daily cafeteria menu, news from administrators, student stories, and even emergency notifications.

Alternative Ed High School Principal Barry Thomas and Operations Principal Paul Brieger have applied to the state regarding the prospect of renewing our alternative education program. We hope to have things up and running in time for the 2nd semester. Co-op Another initiative we will be reinstating in time for 2nd semester is our Co-op program. There is a need in this day and age for our students to gain some real-work experience as they move toward a specific career. We have a tremendous CTE program (mechatronics, woodshop, construction trades, FFA, etc.) and this will simply continue to allow us to meet our mission statement of preparing “... an unprecedented number of students for college

first athletic hall of fame What an amazing weekend for Cavalier Athletics! Everyone at Corunna Public Schools couldn’t be more proud of the inductees of the newly established CHS Athletic Hall of Fame, the support they received from the community, the local businesses that helped with this endeavor, and the involvement that was witnessed at all of the Hall of Fame weekend events. It’s GREAT to be GOLD! Athletic Director Jason Beldyga said,“Our first Hall of Fame weekend

It was an awesome opportunity for old acquaintances to catch up, for younger generations to learn more about Cavalier Athletics, and for our community to recognize so many folks that have made an indelible impact on our community and school.” We are accepting nominations for the class of 2020 from now until December 6th.

Athletes of the Month Presented by Rivals Taphouse & Grille Blake Galesk

By Lexi Buckovick

At the young age of four, Blake Galesk started his athletic career. He plays soccer and baseball, his love for his sports is big, expanding out of the school league, as he is also on a travel league. “My favorite aspect of the game is how much I have been playing it and how much I have grown as a person from playing the game.” Being in his senior year he has one goal in mind. “I want to make as many memories as possible and have fun playing sports.” Being involved in sports for so long Blake has had the same supporters and number one fans throughout his career. “My parents have a huge influence on my career and have been my biggest fans. Especially my mom, she has always pushed me to be my very best, and that’s what drives me to succeed.” After high school, Blake plans to attend college, although he is not decided on what he wants to study, he has a big future ahead of him. Leann Vlassis

By Amy Golombisky

There are many reasons why swimming is considered such a difficult sport. Resistance, from the water, with every movement in every practice and every competition. Likewise, breathing isn’t even an option, if you expect to improve. Your goal is to breathe less while you push harder. Technique is crucial for survival, trying to correct habitual mistakes costs valuable practice time and points. Quite often fear is a great hurdle for many when considering competitive swim, as well. An inherent dread, deeply seated in the primal fear of being overcome with fatigue and ultimately the water. When last season’s Corunna girls swim team needed a manager, someone to help with organizing the team’s activities and photos, Leigh Anne Vlassis was a perfect choice. Leanne had only participated in one season of cheer by her junior year and being an avid photographer and a big sister to her brothers Andrew and Zachary she was a valuable addition to our team. After a month of the managerial duties Leigh Anne made it clear she had a new goal. She was no longer content with just watching from the sidelines and helping out here and there, she wanted to be part of the action. Despite the long grueling practices she had witnessed, sometimes upwards of eight thousand or more yards in a day’ she couldn’t resist being a part of a team she had to quickly come to love. This is Leigh Anne’s second season as a Corunna varsity swimmer. She has brought a level of commitment to a team in a sport she had never attempted before and turned it into a passion and a drive that sets a gold standard.” Honestly it’s the only sport that I feel a real commitment to.” she claims. Leigh Anne speaks highly of her teammates, commenting on “the great bonding experience and how friendly an environment it is for everyone to confide in one another and find support for each other” she added. Leigh Anne balances her college classes, as she is enrolled in the 5th Year program at Corunna High School, with her personal loves of photography, camping, art, and spending time with her family and friends. She has been a part of the yearbook staff at Corunna high school for 2 years. Although she is undecided on her College path, an admirable work ethic and a loving heart, make her a indispensable part of any team. Leigh Anne hasn’t been a part of the Corunna girls team as long as some, but the loyal dedication she has to both her team and school here at Corunna, and her conquering spirit, exemplifies what the Corunna Cavaliers stand for and reminds us all that it’s great to be GOLD. Varsity Volleyball Preview Submitted by Varsity Volleyball Coach Kari Carnell We hope to improve on last year’s success. We return a key core group from last year’s final four run so we have some experience that knows what it will take. Returning for the Cavs this year is a 2018 All-Stater and current Miss Volleyball nominee, Elizabeth Norris, as well as an All-Region player from 2018 in Ellie Toney. Hannah Hollister will also be returning and filling in at the Libero position. Lilly Bower returns as well as Ava Gustafson, Alexis Bauman, Josalyn Stratton and JaiLia Campos. We will look to a few newcomers in Neele’ge Sims, Sydnie Gillett, and Ellie Homola to step right in and help make an impact. Corunna changed to a new conference this year, the Flint Metro League, so we will see some new competition throughout the season, which we hope will benefit us. We have started out strong in conference play and finish up the first round of play on Wednesday, September 18th against Brandon. As of Tuesday, September 17th, the team sat at 8-2-1 and at 3-0 in conference play.

Girls Swimming Preview

The Corunna Girls Swim and Dive Team has started off the 2019 season on a very high note – undefeated at 4-0. In addition to the achievements the girls receive in the pool, they still get to have some fun outside of the pool. Each year they pick a different visiting team to celebrate “Christmas in Corunna” with, which includes dinner and sometimes a special treat like Christmas cookies. They also hold a black and gold meet, do scavenger hunts and try to have a charity event at a home event.

Seniors, from left: Garret Andrejack, Blake Galesk and Jake Conklin.

2019 was an amazing season for the Corunna High School FIRST Robotics Competition T eam. Team Fridgebot placed high at the State Competition and made it into Finals at the Worlds Competition in Detroit. After an adventurous summer attending events like RoboCon in Lapeer (finished 6th Alliance Captains in finals), the Detroit Maker Faire at The Henry Ford Museum (won the scrimmage), or even hosting their own “Rods and Robots” Car Show (over 30 cars in inaugural event), the team is now back in the lab and ready to build for another season. On September 28th, Team FridgeBot is headed to the Ferris RoboDay Competition at Ferris State University in Big Rapids and they are looking forward to once again using the robot they built last winter

with some minor competitive modifications. Corunna Robotics uses these kinds of events to try new ideas, train its team members and just have fun competing. They are always looking for local businesses and corporations to partner with and continue providing these great opportunities. The First Tech Challenge Corunna Middle School Robotics competition team, the “Golden Gears,” has started working on its 2019 robot build and is looking for interested new team members or business partners to join with. The team is meeting in the middle school pool building on Thursday nights from 5:30 until 8:00 pm. You can find out more about the teams at www.FridgeBotfoundation.org or email Corunna5084@gmail.com.

MBF (Man's Best Friend) Lifelong Corunna resident and 1970 CHS graduate Tony Hornus who ‘retired’ in 2005 after an award-winning 32-year journalism career at The Argus-Press in Owosso, then ventured into the highly competitive world of filmmaking (writer, actor, producer and director) and non-fiction book/screenwriting. ‘Man’s Best Friend’ was filmed, in 2018, mostly in Corunna (90%), at places such as the courthouse, county jail, McCurdy Park, private homes, the old Pleasant View, the Shiawassee Humane Society and other locations. An engaging ‘tail’ that shows the parallels between the treatment of

wounded military veterans and ‘last chance’ shelter dogs. ‘MBF’ (Man’s Best Friend) is a unique story that touches upon an array of societal issues. From Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other emotional and psychological challenges; physical wounds and horrific disfigurement of military veterans; homelessness and vets/families struggling at the poverty level; abuse and mistreatment of animals (specifically canines); disrespectful, self-entitled, troubled teens; and, the arrogance of ‘perceived privilege’ by those in positions of power. The uniqueness of MBF is its redemptive reach for balance. It strives to expose the darkness of man’s inhumanity, yet embraces the goodness in the hearts of others.

mosquito warning SCHD Encourages Residents to Protect Themselves Against Mosquito-borne Diseases The Shiawassee County Health Department (SCHD) is urging residents to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases following reports of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in other parts of the state. While no cases have been reported in Shiawassee County, seven human cases of EEE, including three fatal, have been confirmed in the following counties: Barry, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, and Van Buren, along with 14 animal cases confirmed in Genesee, Lapeer, and St. Joseph counties. Related cases like these lead SCHD to stress the importance of everyone taking precautions against mosquito bites, especially during activities occurring at or after dusk, particularly activities that involve children. Shiawassee County residents can stay healthy by following these steps to avoid mosquito bites, especially prior to outdoor activities: • Apply insect repellants that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-registered product to exposed skin or clothing, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions for use. • Children under 2 months old should not use repellant but rather be covered in clothing that covers arms, legs; strollers and baby carriers should be covered with mosquito netting. • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Also apply insect repellant to clothing to help prevent bites. • Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitos out-

side. • Empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home such as buckets, unused kiddie pools, old tires, or similar sites where mosquitos may lay eggs. • Use nets and/or fans over outside eating areas. • People can be infected with EEE, California Group encephalitis viruses, and West Nile virus (WNV) from the bite of a mosquito carrying the viruses. Infections can occur even when the mosquito bite numbers are low. The diseases can affect anyone, however persons younger than 15 and over the age of 50 are at greatest risk of severe illness following infection. • Signs of EEE and WNV include the sudden onset of fever, chills, body and join aches. Symptoms of California encephalitis virus include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and lethargy. The diseases can develop into severe encephalitis, resulting in headaches, disorientation, tremors, seizures and paralysis. Permanent brain damage, coma and death may also occur in some cases. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should visit a health care provider or emergency room. There is an EEE vaccine available for horses, but not for people. • Further information about mosquito-borne disease is available at https://www.michigan.gov/emergingdiseases or on the Shiawassee County Health Department website at http://health.shiawassee.net.

Respite Volunteer Training In Owosso- Volunteers Needed

The next Respite Volunteers of Shiawassee Volunteer Training Workshop will be Thursday, Oct. 10th from 9am to 12pm at First United Methodist Church, 1500 N. Water St., Owosso. The training is an opportunity to learn more about the program and volunteer opportunities that are available. There are multiple volunteer opportunities; volunteering for a person with health/medical challenges in the volunteer’s own community, providing respite for the family caregiver, helping at the office in Owosso, helping with events, helping with special projects. The program serves adults who have ongoing health and medical challenges, especially if their family caregivers need respite volunteer services. The volunteer service is based on availability of volunteers for each community. The largest need for volunteers is to be matched with and serve adults with ongoing health needs, and their caregiving families, and especially persons who are frail, elderly and living alone. Respite vol-

unteers typically spend one to three hours a week of time with the person they are matched with in their own community, and help as needed depending on each person and family caregiving situation. The volunteers provide friendly visiting, play cards or board games, help the person with hobbies, and provide respite to the family caregivers. Volunteers willing to be matched with someone are needed throughout the county. For additional information, please see the website at www.respitevolunteers.org or the Respite Volunteer facebook page, call (989) 7251127 or stop by the office. Persons who are interested in attending the workshop are asked to register in advance: office@respitevolunteers. org or (989) 725-1127. Adults with health and medical challenges and their family caregivers may also contact Respite Volunteers to request an evaluation to receive services. And employers wanting to provide information to their employees, who are also family caregivers may also call to schedule presentations and meetings.

Connection of the month

William “Bill” Graham

By Melissa Shepard William “Bill” Graham, owner of Graham Accounting & Income Tax in Corunna, has been in the accounting/income tax field in one way or another for 50 years, since he started working for his grandfather when he was in high school in 1969. Bill explained, “My grandfather, Marlow Sutton, had a tax business in his home on Legion Road back in the 60’s. My mother used to type taxes for him in the days before computers and I took over for her when I was in high school. He passed away in 1979 and I took over the tax business, while also working for Delores DeGood in Corunna at her accounting firm. When she and her husband left the area, I purchased her business and in the intervening years, purchased a number of other small accounting/tax businesses. Bill’s favorite thing about his job is that he enjoys people. “In my business I get to see a great number of people every day and learn about them, their jobs, families and interests. It’s a very rewarding part of what I do. The hours are flexible and has allowed me to be able to attend many of our kids’ sporting events over the years. I like working in Corunna where I have been fortunate to have only a two-mile commute to work every day. I like small towns where you can go to South 401 for lunch and know many of the people you see in there.” said Bill. Bill graduated from Owosso High School in 1972 and then from Michigan State University with an accounting degree. Bill and his wife Jean have been married for almost 40 years. Jean is a Chesaning High School graduate and she attended Michigan State University and Delta College. Together they have 3 children, Michael, Allyson and David, all whom attended Corunna Public Schools. Al-

lyson played volleyball, basketball, soccer and ran track and David played football and baseball. Michael has two daughters, Cierra, a Corunna graduate who was a cheerleader and a dance team member and Hillary, a Genesee graduate. In their spare time, Bill and his wife enjoy riding their Harley tour bike. They have traveled to Glacier National Park in Montana, and took a longer trip to Seattle and then down the Pacific Coast Highway through the redwoods and sequoias. They also belong to an antique car club and attend their annual rallies all over the U.S. and Canada.“I have driven my 75 year old car to rallies in New Hampshire and to eastern Canada the past two years. I have also enjoyed playing senior softball in Chesaning the last 10 years, and golf in a league at Corunna Hills.” said Bill. Bill has been the treasurer for the Corunna Athletic Club (sports boosters) since the late 1990’s and he is the treasurer for the Corunna Education Foundation. Bill was treasurer for Habitat for Humanity for six years and has served on the board of the Shiawassee Family YMCA for 25 years. When asked what his favorite thing about being a Cavalier is, Bill answered, “watching Corunna High School sports the last 25 years has been very enjoyable. The great coaches we have had at Corunna and the resulting excellent teams and athletes has shown how important leadership is for developing and shaping our youth. We have such a great 4-H program; we have a wonderful young band director; our kids are dedicated to their sports and representing Corunna and it is just amazing how many great teams we have had. And, learning the history of sports at Corunna, you can see that this commitment to excellence dates back at least to the 40’s and many of those people are still in Corunna watching their children and grandchildren carry on the Cavalier traditions today.”
