fattal’s forum As the 2018-19 school year has wrapped up, the majority of today’s column will share some of the highlights from the past year. Before we get to that, however, I would like to take a minute to share a personal philosophy that has nothing to do with school and everything to do with school all at the same time. One of my overriding philosophies I share with staff on a regular basis is one that is borne through experience: Take care of those you care about and let them know how you feel on a regular basis. Make it a point of each and every day to tell them you love them. I share this because we never know when those close to us may be gone -- and we always want to make sure people know we care. Why is that important in a school? Imagine how our school (Community? State? Country?) would be different if that was simply the expectation for everyone? We see a lot of items in the news and on social media regarding all the problems in the world. A little love, on a daily basis, could go a long way toward making our little corner of the world a better place. Miscellany 2019-20 Accomplishments - The rest of today’s column will highlight many (not all!) of our accomplishments in the past school year. You’ll see we accomplished some amazing things!!

• Hired a Middle School counselor (Molly Biondo) and three teachers

to lower every single K-4 elementary class size from the previous year, provide additional student social/emotional support and keep 5th through 7th-grade class sizes at previous levels • Successfully piloted EngageNY and Bookworms as our Tier I math and ELA curriculum, respectively • New bathroom partitions installed at CHS • Fantastic summer school for our K-3 students, featuring a trip to the sand dunes up north (this year’s trip is being planned to Chicago) • Successful Great to be Gold marketing campaign with the Corunna Connection, WJSZ and our own social media (YouTube, Facebook and Twitter) sites • Great to be Gold mural put up at end of the hall at CHS • LP fire alarm system updated • Higher HS athletic eligibility standards • Established a “Begindergarten” program for next year • Math and ELA learning labs established at CHS • Earned a $125,000 Michigan State Police security grant • Bryan Heid recognized as 2018 MHSCA Cross Country coach of the year • Established Robotics teams from 1st grade through 5th grade • Implemented permanent building subs to help with sub teaching shortages • Key fobs in place at LP, EM, MS, and HS; NR will happen in time for school next fall • Simplified our teacher evaluation process in regard to student growth -- the envy of all other county schools • First ever Final 4 appearance for the girls’ volleyball team • Installed more outdoor security cameras at our buildings • AMPED class created new banners for the gym (and many other areas throughout the district)

• Changed phone carriers for the district; savings of

about $600 a month • HS Construction Trades class built an off-site pole barn • New camera system in gymnasium allowing Corunna family/alumni from around the world to view athletic and academic events • New coffee bar and furniture for the HS media center • New outdoor basketball hoops installed at EM • Instituted a maintenance request ticket system • Received a grant to install a washer/dryer at EM • Hosted 46th Military Police Departure ceremony • Arranged for 7th graders to visit Baker College -- now have a college visit for every grade 7th through 11th • Battle of the Books implemented at CHS • New backboards donated at CHS • Survived the weirdest, most extreme weather we’ve ever seen… • Began an anti-vaping campaign • Incredible Family Literacy night and Daddy Daughter Dance • Saving around $1,100 a month since installing LED lights at CHS • Purchased another new bus and lawnmower • Improved our computer security logins • Pulled together as a community to help with tornado victims; LP/ NR staff worked together to make a very special day for our K-Pre1 students • Robotics team qualified for worlds • Many OM teams qualified for the World Championships and our HS team won! • Girls track team won their first-ever state championship! • Elected our first-ever athletic Hall of Fame class; induction will be next fall • #1 ranked HS in Shiawassee County according to US News and World Report • Visitors from Australia and elsewhere in the United States came to observe some of our teachers and their use of formative assessment • Recognized the following people as Employees of the Month: Rick Wheeler, Yvonne McCarrick, Alan Montgomery, Duane Ochodnicky, Paulette Johnson, Ryan Czymbor, Dave Butcher, Michelle Lenneman, Amy Schu and Lisa Louch. • Recognized the following employees for dedicated years of service: (20 years) Shannon Dasen, Betsy Herrick, Shari Judd, Anne Kassuba, Michele Lenneman, Jill Lulham, Steve Noble, Kelly Rowe, and Sherri Svrcek. (25 years) Shelley Gardner, Darrin Moiles, and Pam Ryan, • Recognized the following retirees, who all had a hand in making Corunna the best district anywhere. All have impacted so many lives during their time here. Mark Ackley (first hired in 1983), Barb Birchmeier (2006), Wendy Coon (1991), Don Mort (2000), and Marge White (1995). • Announced our 2019-20 Employee (Kim Phillips) and Teacher (Robyn Lentz) of the Year. new student writers

My name is Madison Johnson. I am a senior at Corunna High School. I am 16 years old and I work at South 401 with some pretty fun people. At school my favorite classes are Yearbook and Art. During the school year you can find me in Mrs. Hilewsky’s room for Yearbook class, going to school sporting events, taking photos, or helping the high school Cross Country team with my friend Gurleen. I am also a dual enrollment student at Lansing Community College. After my first two years at LCC, I hope to go to Saginaw Valley State University and study journalism, photography and videography. Anything to let out my creative energy in a fun way. I’m in love with photography, so the thing I love doing becomes much more enjoyable when I have the support of my teachers, classmates, friends, family, and people who have seen my photos through others. I decided to start by taking pictures of people in general. When high school started, I started taking photos at any sporting events. I would share my photos with anyone who wanted them by email or on social media. It is a great feeling when somebody wants one of your photos. I feel happiness myself, seeing how happy they are looking at the pictures when they are competing.

The goal I’m currently striving for is to better myself as a student, photographer and writer the best I can. Realizing how important school is and how important my goals are, I now have a desire to study knowing it will help me become successful in the future. Someday I hope to inspire people, whether it’s just one person or thousands. I want to have some kind of impact.

My name is Livianna Gotts, I’m 17 years old and am currently a senior at Corunna High School. I love to encourage people to live life to its fullest. I’m currently part of “Peer to Peer” program because it is important to me that all students feel included in our school community. I love art and being creative in many forms. I believe that Corunna is a great community, full of support, and am very grateful for growing up here. My future goals include attending MSU to achieve a bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathologist. I choose this career hopefully to help students the way that my own speech pathologist, teachers, coaches and compassionate adults have influenced my life. I’m excited to help the Corunna Connection highlight students achievements, and think it is wonderful that as a community we acknowledge just how Great It Is To Be Gold.

My name is Lexi Bukovick, I am a 17 year-old senior at Corunna High School. Born and raised in Owosso, I come from a family of 4. Some of my hobbies include running, drinking coffee, hanging out with family and friends, as well as enjoying the outdoors. If I am not enjoying one of my many hobbies, chances are I am at working at our local Savea-Lot. I am very involved in school and extracurricular activities. I am a fourth-year member of our girls Varsity Cross Country team. I am also a fourth-year member of the Varsity Track and Field team, running middle distance. My love of running began in the fifth grade when I ran a girls 5k run with a friend. Since then I have run miles upon miles. This spring I clocked in my 3,000th mile since the summer of my freshman year. I have captured many first overall female finisher titles. One being my half marathon up in the U.P. at picture rocks, another being my 5k run in Homer, Alaska. Outside of sports I am my senior class secretary, our FFA chapter secretary, a Student Council member, a National Honors Society member, and I also show a pen of market lambs at the Shiawassee County Fair every August. My love of livestock and the FFA began when I was in the third grade when my mom was a paraprofessional in the Ag education department at Corunna High School. Since the age of 13 I have shown a pen market lambs each year at the Shiawassee County fair as well as a breeding stock ewe. Through the FFA, I am beginning my second term as chapter secretary, and I just ended my term as the region IV sentinel. Through the FFA I have completed over 150 hours of community service and have competed in many skills contests. In school I am our Managing Editor for our school yearbook. I enjoy going to Friday night football games and taking pictures, or being in the student section. One of my favorite classes besides yearbook is our Agriscience classes. In ag I learn many things, from leadership skills to how to build a hydroponic system and grow sunflowers. Currently, I am also a dual enrollment student through Mott Community College, studying exercise science. Upon graduation I plan to transfer to the University of Michigan to earn my doctorate and pursue a career in sports medicine.

girls track state champs

Girls Track Wins First Ever State Championship By Lexi Bukovick On Friday, May 31, nine members of the Corunna girls track team headed to Zeeland East High School with one goal in mind - to win a state title. When Friday ended and Saturday began those girls were getting ready to make their mark, little did they know their marks would make Corunna girl’s track history. With hours upon hours of rain delays the girls pulled through. Ending the night with multiple all-state titles, and even a few first-place finishes. Hannah Hollister ended the night with many accomplishments, one being multiple all-state titles in individual and relay events, and another beating her own school record. Hollister competed in six events and showed no mercy each time she got up to toe the line. Lily Evans had a stand out night taking a top 20 finish in the 1600, then clocking in a 6th place all-state time of 11:00.16 in the 3200. Kate Feldpaush competed in the 1600 dropping a 5:26.25. Following the 1600 Kate also ran the 3200 and finished with a 11:27.28. To top off the running events the 4x100

team consisting of Lily Bower, Elizabeth Norris, Lexi Mort and Hannah Hollister, took a first-place finish with a blistering time of 49.56. In the field events, jumping her way into a top 10 finish, Elizabeth Norris, jumped a height of 4’11 in high jump. Senior Lexi Mort competed in the long jump, finishing with a jump of 15’11 earning her a 14th place finish. Mort also competed in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Finishing with an all-state finishing time of 15.66, earning her a 6th place title in the 100 hurdles. Throwing her way to the top, Mariah Dunkin ended the night with a second-place throw in discus, measuring in at 126.10 feet. In shot put Dunkin finished with another all-state throw, with final throw measuring at 38.01 feet. After the rain delays, sweat and tears the Corunna girls track team came out on top of the podium. Finishing with a score of 54 points the girls pulled through. Their mentality stayed strong no matter what came their way, and their performance at Zeeland Stadium will forever go down in Corunna girl’s track history.

(Photos courtesy of Gary Jacobs) “It was an incredible day. The girls withstood over 6 and a 1/2 hours of weather delays. Mariah Dunkin had a fantastic final day as a cavalier, picking up 12 total points in the throwing events. The 4x100 relay won by .01 seconds over Frankenmuth. Hannah Hollister helped score 36 total points out of a possible 40. That was the top state meet performance in school history, boys or girls. The amazing thing about this team, is that any time I asked them to do something, they did it. And on June 1st they did the ultimate thing and won a state title.” - Alan Montgomery “This group of girls brought an incredible amount of pride and excitement to our community with their performance all season long. Their resilience and belief in Coach Montgomery and Coach Springer’s plan was evident all day long at the State Meet as they battled the weather, the conditions, and the competition! This was an accomplishment that will stick with them for the rest of their lives and the support they received from our community made it all the more special!” - Jason Beldyga

varsity softball big sis/lil sis

The Corunna Varsity Girls Softball Team hosted the 2nd Annual Big Sister & Little Sister Game on May 23rd. This process begins each year with our Varsity girls (Big Sis) being paired up with their 3rd or 4th grade Lil Sis. The Varsity player then writes them an introductory letter to have the Big Sis introduce themselves to their Lil Sis. They try to exchange letters back and forth during the season and then culminate the event with the Lil Sis’ attending a game towards the end of the season. There they have an opportunity to watch their Big Sis’ play in

a game, play catch in left field with their Big Sis in between the double header games, and finally at the conclusion of the second game, the Lil Sis’ can go through and meet each one of the Varsity players and receive autographs on a schedule poster that is donated each season from local photographer, Tracy Hyde. This is great for all involved and gives the Varsity players an opportunity to give back to the community that they represent. (Courtesy photos)

Corunna FFA Grain Show and FFA Banquet By: Samantha Whitehead March is always a busy month when it comes to the Corunna FFA as they are nearing the end of the year and have many activities to celebrate the Spring season. The Grain Show through the FFA is a time where students show their talents and what they are learning in agriculture in an interesting way, you can provide crop samples, (corn, wheat, soybeans, black beans, and other things or a hay sample, or even an educational display on a topic of your choice, that relates to the agriculture field and industry). Many students participated and the science rooms were opened to the public to check out the hard work that the students put together.

Next year’s fourth grade students toured Corunna Middle School at the end of the school year. Students will make the move to CMS next fall and the visit helps to make the transition go more smoothly. Students had an opportunity to see the classrooms, the gymnasium, play outside and meet their future principal, Mrs. Johnston. Staff members were also excited to welcome the students. Teacher Kari Carnell wanted students to see a different environment to get a work-out in, other than the Corunna Middle School gym, and to be exposed to other types of activities and equipment. They completed a high energy circuit workout in groups and did activities like TRX rows, ball slams, resistance band pulls downs, box jumps and other dumbbell exercises. The students had a blast and there were smiles all around, even while being challenged. (Photos courtesy of Corunna Public Schools)

This fall we will begin a new program in our building called “Begindergarten.” Our early childhood classrooms are devoted to providing a caring and nurturing setting while at the same time igniting a passion for learning in each child we serve. We have created an experience that celebrates and supports the uniqueness of each child. We offer a variety of educational opportunities that will expand your child’s horizon. We know our future Cavaliers will become the next world leaders, innovators, scientists, and caregivers. We are honored and dedicated to provide the experiences that foster the education, skills, compassion, and passion they will need to create a brighter and better world for all of us. We have a dedicated staff that focuses entirely on the unique needs of new Cavaliers. What is Begindergarten? Begindergarten is kindergarten designed for the socially, emotionally, and/ or academically young student. Begindergarten will provide learning experiences and opportunities for children similar to the kindergarten classroom, using a modified kindergarten curriculum, but taught at a pace and intensity dependent on individual readiness. Students are fully immersed in the kindergarten environment and would participate in all kindergarten activities based on K-12 State Standards (I.e.: STEAM, physical education, library, and technology). What is the qualifying age for Begindergarten? Students turning 5 on or after June 1st through December 1st, of the current year, would qualify for Begindergarten. How does a student qualify? All students entering school at Nellie Reed will participate in a kindergarten entry assessment. The administrator would use the assessment results, along with the age and social development of the student, to determine whether a student is offered the Begindergarten program. What about a student who doesn’t perform to their ability during the assessment? If a parent is concerned about their child’s performance during the kindergarten entry assessment, a makeup appointment can be arranged. When will parents be notified of the results of the assessment? Parents will be notified in the summer prior to the beginning of the school year. What is the curriculum?

Begindergarten teachers will offer a modified kindergarten curriculum focused on building foundational skills to help students have long-term success. Would it be all academic or a more play-based? All developmentally appropriate early childhood programs provide students with a mix of academic and social/emotional development skills. Is Begindergarten full day or half day? Begindergarten will be full day. What is a typical class size for the Begindergarten program? Our Begindergarten class will have somewhat smaller class sizes than our kindergarten classes. We anticipate sizes to be between 15-20. What Special Education services are available to children in Begindergarten? All Special Education services, in accordance with the student’s IEP, will be made available. Is Begindergarten a tuition-based program? No, Begindergarten is a K-12 state funded program. It is considered to be a kindergarten program. Where is the Begindergarten Program Located? It is located at Nellie Reed Elementary (201 E. Washington St., Vernon). Can my child attend Begindergarten even if I live out of the district of Corunna? Absolutely! Parents simply fill out school-of-choice paperwork at our central office or at Nellie Reed. Does Corunna Public School provide transportation to Begindergarten? Yes, if the parent lives in the district. Students living outside the district would be school-of-choice students and parents must provide daily transportation to and from school. Where will my child go to school following their year in Begindergarten? Graduates of the Begindergarten program will attend kindergarten. Is childcare available before and after school? Connection of the month Corunna Connection of the Month Dave Harvey

From late night slow pitch softball games to making cookies with his wife, Mr.Harvey has it made. Retiring in 2013, Corunna Alumni Dave Harvey spends his summer days umpiring slow pitch softball games. For nearly thirty years slow pitch softball has had a spot in his heart.“What do I enjoy most? Well, meeting new people and making lots of friends. So many nice people!” Dave enjoys the game of softball. Growing up Dave played high school baseball for Corunna. Af against 25 other teams for the top title in the nation.” When asked what inspired him to do so Dave laughed,“In high school my neighbors all officiated for the youth. Without ums you can’t play! I do it because it’s a good way to give back to society”. When the slow pitch season comes to an end for the year you can find Dave with his wife Rose, at home making the legendary Harvey Cookies. Dave and Rose make their famous cookies primarily in the winter time. That way they can use their garage as a walk in freezer for the mountains of cookies they produce, and so Dave can enjoy the baking process. The cookie making began when Dave would use them as a reward for his students or sports teams. Since then the cookie making duo of Dave and Rose Harvey has blossomed. In 2008 a student at Corunna High School was having a fundraiser for her sister who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia at the time. To help out the Harvey’s made around 100 cookies for the girl to sell, and all the profit went to her sisters fight against Leukemia. Fastforwarding to now the Harvey’s sell cookies for just one dollar to high school students. The proceeds from the sales go to buy kids in the school district coats and sweatshirts if they cannot afford them. Last year Dave and Rose baked and sold over 7,000 cookies! Partnering with the local food banks and the backpack program the Harvey’s never ending love of giving back to the community shows no signs of slowing down.

IT’S GREAT TO BE GOLD!
