girls swimming

(Photo courtesy of Brenda Vowell) November 2nd & 3rd turned into a great weekend for the Corunna Girls Swim team as they finished 4th overall at the ISC Championships held at SVSU. Senior Morgan Renwick (2nd) and freshman Mariah Hall (3rd) had many great dives for Corunna, helping the team stay among the top teams. In the last event of the meet, the 400 free relay team of Marissa Jackson, Tatum LePino, Ally Vowell & Piper LePino finished in 3rd place. It was a great way for senior Tatum LePino (Corunna Connection November Athlete of the Month) to end her high school swimming career. Jackson, Vowell and the LePino sisters also placed 5th in the 200 medley relay. In their Individual races Piper LePino (8th in the 100 Breastroke); Ta-

tum LePino (7th in the 100 free); Ally Vowell (4th in the 50 freestyle & 7th in the 100 Butterfly) and Marissa Jackson (4th in the 200 Freestyle, 8th in the 100 Backstroke) were also outstanding. The entire team swam well with several other Corunna swimmers making a trip to the podium or placing for the Cavaliers. They included freshman Mackayla Davis (6th in the 500 free), Sophomore Chloe Earl (8th in the 100 butterfly) and the 200 free relay team of Chloe Earl, Lila Belmer, Autumn Zachar and Mackayla Davis (7th place). With additional freshman swimmers like Jade Evans, Katie Richardson and Claire Buckley on the roster, Coach Golombisky’s young team should continue to be strong again next year. Great job ladies!

Corunna High School Drama

Radium Girls The Corunna High School Drama club will be performing the drama, Radium Girls. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece. Called a “powerful” and “engrossing” drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science. Show dates for the CHS performances are Saturday, November 17th at 7pm and Sunday, November 18th at 1pm. The performances are being held at the Lebowskey Box Theatre and are directed by Corunna students Sophie Riley & Heather Wandrie (shown in photo). (Courtesy Photo)

sports achievements

The Corunna 7th grade football team wrapped up their third straight undefeated season in a row on October 20th with a win over Millington. Coach Dustin Bower had this to say about his squad, “It’s a very special group of kids and athletes. The work ethic for all of them was very impressive. The offense was more complicated this year and all of them stepped up. The line was outstanding all year and the skill positions really stepped up. We, as coaches, could not ask for a better group of hard working, tough nosed outstanding character young people. This groups of kids has a very high ceiling and it’s exciting to think what the future may hold for them, all they have to do is go get it!” (Photo courtesy of Eric Isham)

Editorial By Sam Vowell I regret to say this will be my last editorial article for the Corunna Connection. Todd Brewer founded this paper in October of 2016 and in November of that year, he asked me to take on the role of editor. We agreed there were great things happening in Corunna, but many of those stories and the people involved with them weren’t being publicized. I told him I would love to help tell those stories, but have a full-time job, kids playing multiple sports/music and am pretty involved with charity work. It worked out well for much of that first year and running the paper took about twenty hours a month to do, which was manageable. Stacey Henry & Melissa Shepard took over from Todd as owners last November and the paper has continued to do well, growing an even larger following. Unfortunately for me, the obligations involved with having a larger size paper and getting it to press on time have nearly tripled the number of hours I spend working on it each month. I’ve agreed to continue to write Athlete of the Month or Connection of the Month articles for the Corunna Connection and post some things on Facebook, but to free up more time for my family, I need to step aside as monthly editor. It has been my pleasure to be editor of the Corunna Connection these past two years and has allowed me to meet or reconnect with so many great community members & students at Corunna Public Schools. I plan on continuing to write about the people that make Corunna special, but doing so without the editing deadlines that detract from time spent with my family. I’m not sure what direction Stacey & Melissa will take the Corunna Connection in the future, but hope you’ll continue to support it as an avenue to spotlight the people of Corunna. From now on news can be sent to Melissa Shepard at corunnaconnection@ gmail.com or (989) 666-1340. For advertising information, contact Stacey Henry at cconnectionsales@gmail.com or (231) 942-1065.

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS. EMPOWERING TRANSITION. GROWING COMMUNITY.

Athletes of the Month Presented by Rivals Taphouse & Grille Brock Brewer

By Michelle Schwab 10 years ago, on a grassy field behind the playground at Elsa Meyer Elementary school, Brock Brewer started his career playing Corunna football. A solid sized child with a strong determination, Brock was put into the critical position of Center, where he would not only snap the ball, but then also protect his quarterback. Brock eventually found his niche in his current varsity position of offensive tackle which he’s played throughout most of his career since 4th grade. Brock credits his three 3rd grade coaches – Dwight Lovejoy, Steve Hollister and Dennis “Buck” Lovejoy – with helping him to fall in love with the sport and for developing him into the player he is today. Their constant coaching, guidance and support taught him the game, but also grew a deep passion. When asked what he loves most about football, Brock says, “even though it is a team sport, you have to focus on your position. If you mess up, someone else can’t do their job. It’s a lot of pressure but it’s amazing when it pays off.” Coach Kyle Robinson, who has known Brock since those early days of youth football, has the following to say,“Brock is one of the veterans on our team that comes to play and is focused every day. He is extremely coachable and takes constructive criticism as a challenge to improve on a daily basis in whatever we do. Brock is a tremendous example on and off the field of how a student athlete should conduct themselves. He has evolved into a top notch young man and we will miss his character and attitude more than anything.” Not only has Brock made an impact on his coaches and his team at large, but he is well respected by his teammates, as well. Junior Alex Schwab, who has played shoulder pad to shoulder pad with Brock all season on the offensive line, shares that “Brock is a great friend and a great leader, both on and off the field. I know he’s always got my back on the line no matter what. He’s really become a brother to me.” At the end of the year football awards banquet, Brock received many honors, including 1st Team All Conference GAC Red-Offense, The Pat Boyer Award for Outstanding Offensive Lineman, and the highly regarded Nick Annese Award for outstanding character, passion and true embodiment of the Corunna football program as chosen by the coaching staff. Brock certainly left the program on a high note. Brock resides with his parents, Todd and Rebecca Brewer, and his sister Kylie, a junior at CHS. He is a 4th year tri-athlete, competing in football, basketball and track throughout high school. After graduation, he is considering a career in criminal justice, after attending either Central Michigan University or Saginaw Valley State University. Brock has been an absolute asset to the Corunna High School sports program and we look forward to his success in basketball and track and wish him the very best of luck! By Amy Golombisky Tatum LePino Since early childhood, as an effort to keep her busy hands out of trouble, Tatum was put to task organizing coins by shape, color, and appropriate storage containers. This activity was a lesson in responsibility, the appropriate use of her boundless energy and limitless interests because she had made the mistake of swallowing a coin. In her defense, she immediately tattled on herself and was quite proud of her achievement. Mastering these organizational lessons early made it possible for her to enjoy numerous opportunities and develop her ability to balance multiple commitments throughout her high school experience. Now at the age of 17, Tatum Louise LePino, can boast of her multiple athletic accomplishments spanning all four years in which she participated in 4 years of Varsity Swimming, 4 years of Varsity Competitive Cheer, 2 years of Varsity Sideline Cheer, 2 years Varsity Dance and one year of Varsity Tennis (with the intention of participating in the spring of 2019 for her second year). She has earned a total of 12 athletic varsity letters at this time (with more on the way). Tatum isn’t just an athlete though, she has also participated in drama with Mrs. Lentz and Mr. Windnagle since her 7th grade year at Corunna Middle School. She has performed in nine plays and is currently part of the cast for Radium Girls. She intends to audition for the spring musical in 2019. Tatum has received her varsity letter each of the 3 years she has participated. Her love is for performing, but she has also contributed to each show’s set design and construction. Tatum has spent a week each summer for the past three summers attending the Litchfield Jazz Camp in Litchfield, Connecticut. This camp is organized and put on by a group of accomplished jazz musicians from all over the world. She has earned scholarships all three years of participation for her vocal studies during this festival and plans to return again this summer for her fourth year. Although she focuses on her vocal performance while at camp, she has also taught herself to play the guitar, ukulele, and piano. In recent years, Tatum has enjoyed participating in the Shiawassee County Fair through the FFA Co-op program at Corunna High School. She has shown a variety of livestock including sheep, rabbits, and poultry, but is most proud of her “Superior” ribbon given for a painting she entered in the art category. This past spring, Tatum received a second-place ribbon in the Patriotic Art Contest through the Corunna VFW. Her interest in art has become increasingly greater because of these accomplishments and has inspired her to travel with the Corunna High School Art Class and Mrs.Dasen to Japan in July of 2019 before, going off to college at Eastern Michigan University in (Courtesy of the fall. She currently has a grade point average of 4.025. At Eastern, she Sam Vowell) plans to major in illustration and fine arts, Japanese lingual and cultural studies and elementary education. Until then she fills her spare time with part time jobs of lifeguarding, working in a country store and helping her grandmother. She is thankful to God for the blessing of a warm and rewarding Corunna experience and is proud to be GOLD!

corunna robotics learns welding

(Courtesy Photos)

Corunna Robotics recently had a guest from the Ferris State University School of Welding, junior Victoria Funke came in to teach the team how to weld. Victoria is a graduate of Oxford High School, where she was a member of Team Torc. Also there to help volunteer were David Poirier, of ItW Welding and his son, Mitch Poirier, a Ferris State University graduate. The following Corunna students donated their time to learn welding and Bridgeport mill from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 27: Senior Aiden McMaster, Freshman Chance Anderman, Freshman Abby Colburn, Sophomore Xaiver Staubs and Freshman Ayden Henry. They also practiced right angle welding and made a metal coat hanger. The Corunna Robotics team will be starting their competition season in January. In order to enter competitions, the team must raise money through donations to compete. Currently, they have a fundraiser selling Mancino’s coupons. For $20, you get a coupon for a large grinder and a large 3-topping pizza, which is a $38 value. For more information, contact Kelly Glore Dutcher via Facebook or cell (989) 743-0682.

the great outdoors With Garret Andrejack Last month I was able take to the Great Outdoors on trip with the Corunna, Perry, Durand, and Byron FFA chapters and each of their delegates to the 91st National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis. It was a five-day trip where we visited the Windy City of Chicago, Indianapolis and had many interesting and fun stops along the way. I had a great time and was able to meet many new people during the trip. In March, I was selected as one of the six delegates from the Corunna High School FFA to go on the trip. Those selected were the top six most active members in the FFA. On the first day, we traveled to Chicago and during the ride there, I enjoyed sharing stories with the other five delegates from our school, Alexis Bukovick, Elizabeth White, Courtney Butcher, Dylan Dowen, and Joey Lloyd. While in Chicago, we visited the zoo and the John Hancock building, where we were able to go to the top floor. To end the night, we ate some amazing deepdish pizza at Giordano’s. After traveling for another few hours on our journey to Indianapolis, we spent the night in Lafayette, Indiana. The next day we went the rest of the way to Indianapolis. The convention was held at the Lucas Oil Stadium. There were so many more people than I expected to see. Everywhere you looked you could see blue corduroy jackets with corn yellow emblems symbolizing the hundreds of FFA chapters from around the United States. I saw jackets from Alaska, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands and almost every other state. This year there were 65,000+ members at the convention. Because there were so many members, each of the convention sessions they presented had to be given three times. Every day we attended the convention sessions, which were very interesting. It was like one giant FFA meeting, the only difference was that there were motivational speakers each day. This year the theme for the convention was “Just One”. By that they meant that there is only one FFA organization, and in that organization, each and every one of our individual actions as a state, region, chapter, or even one individual person can make a huge impact in society. If we are able to work together and put all of the “Just One’s” together, we can make amazing changes across our country. Not only did we attend convention sessions, but we also toured and participated in different activities each day. We visited the Tuttle Apple Orchard outside of Indianapolis and were able to see how they processed all of their apples and enjoyed eating some too. We attended the career show at the convention center downtown where we were able to learn about many different colleges, what they have to offer and win many prizes & giveaways. One side of the convention center had shops, stores and stands that we shopped at for just about anything involving the FFA or agriculture. I got a lot of nice FFA apparel. One afternoon, we took a tour of a nearby elk farm. It was a little wet and rainy, but that did not seem to bother most of us. One particular bull (male elk), in with the group of cows (female elk), was very aggressive towards us. It was the rut (breeding season), so he was very territorial. He did not want anything or anyone getting near his group of cows. Yet there were two other bulls on the other end of the farm without cows that we could literally hand feed and pet. It was interesting to learn about what they did at the farm as well as how they care for them in the different seasons. For me, the highlight of the trip was seeing Garth Brooks perform live in concert in front of all the FFA members at the Lucas Oil Stadium. He sang some of my favorite songs. Another night we saw one of the world’s best hypnotists perform. It was very comical and he received many laughs from the whole crowd. The last event we took part in was watching a Cinch Rodeo, the World’s Toughest Rodeo, and I even met one of the bull riders. Everyone seemed to have had a great time. While all of the events and activities were fun, some of the best memories were the stories, and times we shared on the bus, or back in the hotel rooms. The trip gave all of us a chance to make some new

friends. I personally made some great new friendships with some FFA members from Perry. I hope that we can share some more fun adventures with them in the future. When I asked Dylan Dowen what he thought of the experience, he said, “The experience was beyond what words can describe, something everyone should experience. Blue corduroy, early mornings and new friendships.” He also said his favorite part of the trip was “being able to meet with new people from all over the nation and to hear what others do in the FFA in each of their states”. Not only that, but he also enjoyed, “seeing the similarities between Michigan and their respective locations.” When I spoke with Joey Lloyd, another Corunna delegate, he said “I enjoyed seeing all of the jackets from around the U.S., I enjoyed hearing all of the stories from people and how they joined the FFA organization, and sharing what they thought was good, and also what they thought should be changed.”. As I mentioned before, this trip was a great experience, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity if it presents itself. Join and become active in the FFA and give all that you have to the organization, and you will receive much more back than you give in your time and effort. A big thank you goes out to the FFA Alumni and our Corunna Chapter. They covered most of the costs for the trip and are supportive of all we do. I would also like to thank Brian Kiesling and Casie Forbush for all the effort they put into making the Corunna FFA Chapter exciting and successful and Corunna High School Academic Principal, Barbara Birchmeier, for spending a few days at the convention to support us. I was optimistic going into the trip, but I cannot tell you how much fun I had and I could not have asked for a better group of people to share the experience with. The FFA is a great organization to be involved in for students to not only learn about agricultural practices in our area, but to also experience it. Participation in the FFA may lead to a future profession or just expand your knowledge, skills and experiences in an area you may have not been able to before.

a day in the life of a soccer player

(Photos Courtesy of Jerry Andrejack) By Xaiver Staubs, Corunna High School Sophomore A day in the life of a varsity soccer player is a serious but fun experience for all members of the team. Varsity practice requires everyone to attend and give their best to become game ready. Our team lost eight seniors last season, but we have gained many more members, mainly freshman, to train up and become valuable assets. Our 2-hour practices revolve around building and becoming familiarized with basic fundamental skills, developing a better touch on the ball, learning how to protect the dangerous space on the field, learning how to communicate with each other, and becoming fit for game day. When I was a freshman, I didn’t know what to expect coming into varsity soccer. After getting smoked in practice a bunch, and getting bowled over in games, you learn that you are going to need help getting better. That’s where our team captains come in, they are there to teach the new kids how they can improve their skills, lead different

aspects of their practices. They guide the team through the games, teach new members how to step up into a big role/part of the team. They are the team’s role models. Our coach is the main reason for our improvement, he makes us do the warm ups and drills that some of us see as not important. But they are the most important aspects of our practices and games. He works one on one at the end of practices with anyone who wants to improve their skills in any aspect. And come game day, he makes sure to give us the motivation we need to go through the game and give it our all, voice his opinion about the referee’s bad calls, and give us our halftime pep talk about winning the next half. Then he analyzes all the things we have to work on and works on it the next day at practice. Because of our coach, captains, and team members, we have a healthy, growing and improving soccer team.

Golden Celebration Students at CHS participated in a Golden Celebration recently. Students had to have one or less unexcused absences, stay positive in their work, do not have any major office referrals and have one or less tardies to earn an ice cream float. As you can see, the students enjoyed their October reward. Congratulations students!

October is National Principals Month

(Courtesy Photo) The Corunna Public Schools would like to recognize the hard work our principals do each and every day. Principals are the keystone of their building, but often don’t get recognition for all the hard work they do each and every day. We thank them for the time and effort they devote to our students, families, staff, and community. Principals serve as educational visionaries, instructional leaders, assessment experts, disciplinarians, community builders, facility managers, special programs administrators, and guardians of various legal, contractual, and policy mandates and initiatives. They are also entrusted with the educational development of young people. Principals set the academic tone for their schools and work collaboratively with teachers and parents to develop and implement a clear vision, high curriculum standards and performance goals. Principals play a vital role in the success of students by creating school environments that facilitate great teaching and learning as well as continuous school improvement. This October, we celebrate our principals and recognize the importance of school leadership in ensuring that every child has access to a high-quality education. We thank them for their exemplary examples of service. They are seven more reasons why “It’s Great to be Gold!”

Connection of the month Corunna Connection of the Month - Mrs. Amy Murphy

(Photos courtesy of Samantha Whitehead)

(Photos courtesy of Brenda Vowell) By Samantha Whitehead Mrs. Amy Murphy is like a mom to all students at Corunna High School, and a friend to the teachers and administrators. She never fails to help you whenever you need it most. She brings the confidence to all those who need it and is always there when you need to talk. You step into Mrs. Murphy’s office, and you get the feeling of being at home and in a comfortable environment. Mrs. Murphy is a Corunna High School Class of ’99 graduate. She attended Central Michigan University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education, and then her master’s degree in counseling. Mrs. Murphy has worked at Corunna Schools for fifteen years and has done amazing things for all the students during that time! When Mrs. Murphy started at Corunna Middle School in 2004, she was a paraprofessional and a long-term sub for that first year, then was employed as a teacher at the middle school for nine years and started at Corunna High School in 2014 where she has thrived. Mrs. Murphy isn’t only amazing at her job, she is an amazing wife to husband, Tony Murphy, and a great mom to their three children, Charlie, Evie, and Audrey. Mrs. Murphy is a loving, caring, and familyoriented person. She treats every single one of her students as if they are her own child, offering positive advice and is there for you to talk with about an exciting or disappointing event. When Mrs. Murphy was asked what inspired her to pursue a career in education/counseling, she replied with, “I have wanted to teach since I was in 1st grade

and have been inspired and encouraged by so many amazing former Corunna teachers. Most notable was my high school teacher Janice Oien,” she continued on,“She cemented my passion to enter the education field through her encouragement and support. I strive each day to create a culture of acceptance and kindness just as she had fostered in her classroom.” In a final statement, Mrs. Murphy states, “My passion to work in education is reinforced on a daily basis as I am given the opportunity to work with remarkable students, colleagues and community members.” Mrs. Murphy is a very active part of Corunna High School and her community. She started the Cavs Closet, an organization for students in need at CHS, where they can access an area with clothing, hygiene products, and many other necessities. Along with that, she was previously the Corunna FCCLA’s leader. Now, Mrs. Murphy is the Corunna High School’s student council advisor, planning all the amazing events at CHS. Mrs. Murphy was honored this year with being awarded the Honorary National Honor Society membership, along with previously being teacher of the year in 2017-18. Mrs. Murphy said, “No words can describe how incredible my time here at Corunna has been. I’ve learned so much, from so many. I’m beyond blessed to have many wonderful mentors and friends impart their wisdom on me. I am a proud Cavalier and feel so lucky to be a part of the Corunna community.”
