BARBAJAN - IDEAS & IMAGES For Hetty, who's understanding and personal sacrifices allow me the luxury of the time I need to paint.

The following thoughts and the notes on the individual pieces were compiled while I was working on the paintings and they take the form of an informal 'conversation' with myself. The effort that this exercise took and the less than ideal result, have convinced me that in the future I should let the paintings talk for themselves.

The individual notes are intended (as a friend of mine put it) to be a response to 'I wonder what was going through his head when he painted this'. Some will find the comments unnecessary or even inappropriate but I suspect some viewers will welcome them and perhaps even look at paintings differently in the future.

These paintings represent one facet of my work over the past three years and include a few earlier pieces that fit this theme and style. This realist style is one of two styles I currently use, the other is a more stylised representation, featuring line and pattern with the idea being one of social commentary rather than one drawn from my life experience.

These images are purposely parochial. They are a collection of people, places, objects, and animals that, along with me, have one thing in common -Barbados. A Barbados that I have known for over fifty years but which still speaks to me in new and exciting ways.

In this exhibition I have been motivated by ideas as well as images. Each painting has evolved either through the mind or the eye. That is, it might be intellectually based and be a personal or social comment, or be physically based and be prompted by something I have seen; like colour, texture, rhythms or compositional possibilities. But, what I have discovered over time, is that neither an idea nor an image is strong enough to stand on its own as the reason for a painting. If I am to be satisfied by a piece, both idea and image must have played important parts in its creation. Trying to keep a balance between the two is what interest me and where the challenge lies. What the casual viewer is likely to see here however, will weigh heavily on the image side. The idea, or rather my idea, is more personal and consequently less obvious. Hopefully the following will shed some light on that side, and add another dimension to the paintings.

I should say that I don 't consider it necessary for the viewer to know my reason for painting a picture to get something from it. What they bring to a painting is just as important. The painting's job is to open the channels of communication and have a conversation with the viewer. This places some 'response-ability' on the viewer, but one of the reasons that I paint this way is that it is accessible on many different 'ability' levels to practically anyone, except perhaps, those prejudiced against this style."

THE IDEAS I move about the island a lot, more because of a general interest than in search of subjects for paintings. Both my wife Hetty and I like the outdoors - the trees and plants , animals the general landscape and the people. (The latter being more her department - I'm more interested i n what they do with the landscape.) This way I'm open to images they find me, and I collect them, but they are no use to me without an idea.

These references or images, may remain stored away for months, in drawers, in sketch pads, or in my mind, until some chance circumstance or observation triggers a switch and 'the idea' or the other half of the reason for the painting comes to light.

Or occasionally the reason is more immediate, as was the case with 'Neddie's Chair', one of the idea-based paintings in this group. I had been at work restoring this chair that we had inherited after my parents died. It was a Berbice chair, my father's chair, the only one i n our living room that he ever used. As I worked on the chair my thoughts went to him. He actually built the chair himself, long before my time, but I had watched him sand it down, refinish the wood and replace its carpet seat a number of times.

The old seat was difficult to remove. It fought me for a while but I finally succeeded and moved away from the chair for a breather I looked back to survey my handiwork. The feeling I experienced is difficult to describe but the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. The space between the chair's mahogany skeleton, left by the removal of the seat, became the void left by his passing. This absence somehow conversely created a presence as if he were there in person . As I looked the symbolism became stronger. The loose leg rest that la y on the deck chair became the discarded artificial leg that he rarely used during last few years of his life. The three chairs in the painting could be my family: my father, mother and I. Maybe that's reaching a bit, but on that clay, that chair, was my father.

If I had not been moved enough by this idea to paint a picture, the physical image cinched it. The lines of the deck, the shapes created by the chairs and their shadows, as well as the original, if slightly absurd image of one chair sitting on two others mad e it irresistible."

ON BARBADOS "My paintings have always been about Barbados, but I have not chosen to paint it because I find it attractive or scenic.

If what I paint sometimes appears picturesque it is because that is just the way it happens to be. I paint it because I am familiar with it, I feel close to it, I love it and I am proud of it. As we say - 'My navel string bury here.' Barbados is a subject that I am moved to 'talk' about and one that I want to share."

It is a bit like a lifelong partnership. If the partners remain aware of each other and no one is taken for granted, then appreciation and love grow with time and intimacy. Initially, attractiveness may play a part but eventually you look past that, and it is the complete experience that sustains the relationship. Husband and wife; painter and subject; they eventually become one. I guess that in keeping with this analogy, these, my paintings of Barbados, would be love letters."

“Arbitraitor” Watercolour 14 x 21 ins Yes, that is the correct spelling. The title comes from the crushed piece of cane or ‘bridge’ towards the top of the painting. Mud and trash. Wet and dry. Slave and master. Employee and employer. Black and white.

A little used road in St Philip made visible at crop time, its tall columns supporting the sky.

It stirred the memory of an illustration in my 1st form ’Approach to Latin’ of the Via Appia flanked with Roman columns.

I let my imagination roam. Centurion and overseer, chariot and buggy, magister et servus.

An interesting light and the opportunity to break compositional rules added to the excitement.

“Beyond The Boundary ll” Acrylic 16x30 ins.

With similar thoughts to Beyond The Boundary but with a slightly different viewpoint, light and subject.

I have always had a thing for rollers ... from way back when I was too small to move one and tennis courts always had one in attendance. In the early morning, as I have painted here, their beautiful, smooth, rich dark brown surface would be refreshingly cool. But it would be hot enough to fry an egg (or anything else) after a few hours in the midday sun.

“The Dancer” 1992 40x25 ins This is a painting of my wife – her body language more than her likeness. Her past experience as a dancer colours her body language, particularly when she’s relaxed. The painting is loosely rendered, in keeping with the comfortable, free way in which her body adapts to the chair.

“Ornella Workman - The Dining Room” 1983 The lady is my wife’s Aunt Nel. A spinster primary school teacher, a firm disciplinarian, a pillar in the church and a much respected lady. But beneath this public exterior was a warm, fun loving person. One who, when well past her three score and ten, would at family gatherings ‘wind and get down’ with the youngest present.

In her house, as in her life, there was a place for everything and everything had its place. Like the epergne ‘filing cabinet’ on the dining table. In its base she filed her letters, and in the top, fond memories of some past outing reside in the form of a ‘woman's tongue’ seed pod.

This piece was intended not only as a portrait of a lady but one of an era. One that formed the foundation both spiritual and physical on which most of Barbados’ vast middle class was built. I wonder about future generations.

When I showed her this painting she looked at it for a while and said “This is how I will look when I get old.” I am not sure how to take that comment. Was it her wit at work or was it that she didn’t consider herself old?

This was painted the day after my mother's funeral.The reference came from the previous year's holiday which she shared with us at Bathsheba. Her shoes and collected shells. She died while my family and I where on holiday in the U.S. I flew back to Barbados and the funeral was held on the following day. I painted this the following day and flew back out the day after that.

The painting with very little effort on my part. I could do nothing wrong. It was if some other person was guiding my hand.

Cuh’ Dil Dil Dil. Acrylic The memory: Lying in bed mornings in the house where I grew up, hearing Mrs Skeete next door calling her ducks.

This is actually my wife Hetty feeding her ducks. She doesn’t call them.

Darnley Eastmond and I worked together in ‘our’ garden for over 25 years - long before it’s maintenance became his full time job. He had previously worked at Bayley's Clinic and at Andromeda Gardens for Iris Bannochie. We were landscapers, masons, carpenters - he was the bulldozer.

He was unsure about sitting for this and I suspect that he thought later that his concern was justified. When I showed him the finished painting he glanced at me and told me that I made him look old.

Recently, two years later, not having seen it again and fortified by a few beers he told my wife that I had painted him with a noose over his head. I was amazed at what he read from the painting in that one and only first glance. His ‘noose’ was the old iron ring that we had found while cleaning up in the early years. We hung it over the young dunk tree branch and it had now become embedded in the mature tree. The iron ring that I had used as a design element and what it symbolised to him are cultures apart.

D has now passed on to his garden above. May he enjoy his well deserved rest.

“The White House” Watercolour 18 x 24ins.

This house caught my eye while I was on one of my rambles in the north-eastern corner of the island. As I sketched I imagined the occupants of this ‘slave house’ to be an elderly couple, looking much as theitr house did, as if they had grown out of the hill on which they lived. I wondered how they managed the rocky path down from the road and then back up to the house. Were they comfortable in the house? Did it have any of the modern conveniences? A barking black dog kept me at a distance so I had to be content with my imagination. As I was packing up to leave the front door opened and an occupant came to check on the dog. So much for my imagination. She was an attractive, thouroughly modern girl in her late teens, talking on her portable phone. She totally ruined all the romantic images I had in my head.

Acrylic The title could apply to this boy’s future outlook as much as it does to the sky. But I don’t think so. I saw him standing by the roadside on a day that the weather would have kept most others indoors.

The look on his face said “I will sell these ackees if it is the last thing I do". I bought some ackees and asked if he would pose for me and he agreed. I wish I knew more about him but I don’t. As I painted my thoughts went to his future but I don’t think that we have cause to worry here.

“Yout” 1992 Watercolour 28.5x22ins.

“Close To The Bone” Acrylic 20x48 ins Who built these dry-stacked walls? What type of existence were the builders able to eke out of this wind blasted, inhospitable land by Pico Tenerife? Do these walls have their origin in England and Scotland or in Africa? Wherever their origin, like the nearby ‘slave huts’ or ‘crofters cottages’ they are the product of ingenuity and available materials.

They are definitely of the land, constructed from its skeleton. A land on which there was very little flesh. The existence they helped sustain must have been one that was Close To The Bone.

“Beyond The Boundary” Acrylic on canvas 16 x13 in.

It is hard to imagine a more unlikely place to play serious cricket - a rocky hillside not far from Pico Teneriffe. A well hit six from this pitch could well end up in Cove Bay. The idea here was Bajans’ love of cricket and the extremes to which they will go to play it. As I painted I thought about it and realised, as others have suggested, that there’s a lot more to cricket than what goes on within the boundaries of the field. Would we be as quick to discard it as we would other colonial impositions?

“Burnt Out” 20x36ins. Acrylic. 1996 The subject of this painting is really the persistance of nature. Every year for the past four years, in the dry season, this area at the end of our gap has burnt. And every year with the coming of the rains, it has sprung back to life. To depict my theme - recurring life, I painted apparent death. The fire had totally altered the palette of what would otherwise have been an ordinary subject. Those colours and the rule-breakingtree in the middle made the painting for me.

“Landmark” circa 1995 I came across this piece of rusted iron on a walk at River Bay. It was no doubt placed there by someone to mark the boundary of their property... But as I looked at it, this piece of metal became more than a landmark, more significant. It sybolised either: travelling west, the first evidence of man on this side of the Atlantic; or travelling east, man’s last mark on the very edge of the New World. This was more than a seascape. When I painted this I was painting all that space between here and Africa, that great expanse of ocean, its distant shore and its close ties, its history and what it means to us in Barbados. That may be a bit heavy on the symbolism but that’s what my mind saw. What viewers see is up to them.

I was reassured about this piece a couple of weeks after it was finished when I listened to Kamau Brathwaite explaining what he means by the ‘travelling’ of Caribbean people.

“Fly South For The Winter” 1991 Watercolour 16 x 23.5 In I have always been disgusted by the ‘sport’ of swamp bird shooting. A chance walk through a shooting swamp provided this image with which I could make a statement.

I read a comment by a curator (whose work I admire) that expressed relief that there were no Black Belly sheep depicted in the show under review. I immediately dug out my reference on sheep and went to work. I felt that I should try to restore some dignity to our Bajan sheep. Maybe it was a comment on how we usually see them depicted rather on the sheep themselves.

It was that person who drew my attention to the part private wit plays in my work.

'Reflecting Our Afrikan Heritage Curatorial Statement ‘Reflecting Our Afrikan Heritage’ is a virtual exhibition which discusses the intrinsic and learnt Afrikan expressions and behaviors within the Barbadian cultural landscape as captured by our artists, in celebration of Afrikan Heritage month 2021.

Art is powerful. Symbols are powerful. Sometimes we are not even aware of the power in the symbols around us. They can be everyday subconscious reaffirmations, or they can be loud and bombastic yelling " Hey look at me, I am your Afrikan heritage.”

Over 400 years ago the first African landed on the shores of Barbados, not on a voyage of peace and friendship but in servitude to the English ‘discoverer’ of new lands for a king. Over time, the descendants of both became neither African nor English but Barbadian, a hybrid in varying proportions of genetic ancestry and cultural expression. The path was painful and shameful as the descendants of the servant were enslaved by those of the discoverer. Try as some might, that history can never be erased. “Oppression affects the souls of the oppressed as well as the oppressor.” I read that somewhere.

Two hundred years after Emancipation and after 50 years of Independence, our dominant culture is still very much steeped in the English legacy. Most of us still carry the names of the slave masters, we are governed by the Westminster style of government, and ‘Dear Sir’ is still the most acceptable greeting on a formal letter.

Hillary Beckles in his essay , “Emancipation in the British West Indies”, tells us they have been many victories along the way. In less than 200 years we have seen the decriminalization of Afrikan cultural objects - namely the drum, the ascendence of African Studies and the overt adoption of our African heritage especially in the Garvey Movement, the growth and development of Rastafari, and the Pan African movements of the 60s, 70s. Up to the present day, numerous people have fought for a learned and expressed form of African identity and this, like freedom “…demands continuous maintenance.” (Carl Niehaus).

Humans are a body potential. Innate is our ability to manifest and create from seemingly nothing. Our intelligence is carried within. So, although enslaved Africans were stripped of material possession for the Middle Passage, they carried Africa within their blood, our inheritance.

Our hands have carved the physical landscape with years of toil and love for mother earth. Our wood men still carve our features, our potters still make vessels to hold necessities and souls, our seamstresses and jewellers create adornments to uplift our bodies and hearts. We mark our rites of passage with celebrations, revering our ancestors, with funerals being one of more popular social gatherings. Every year we endorse and elevate African hairstyles. We no longer have to wrap our spiritual practices in the clothing of Christianity if we don’t want to. Our artists capture it all whether knowingly or unknowingly.

This is what this exhibition is about - the ‘feeling’ of our Afrikan heritage. It is not a black or white thing. It is a Bajan thing, inclusive of all ethnic groups who call this island home. Any other way would only contribute to the schizophrenia. We work towards peace.

CARIBBEAN FINE ART FAIR

CAFA. “The show must go on! The organisers of the Caribbean Fine Art Fair (CaFA Fair) are ensuring the current pandemic does not bring the annual arts showcase to a halt.

From March 10 to 24, the work of over 70 prolific visual artists from the Caribbean and the Diaspora will be on display in a virtual gallery at caribbean.global, for the first time ever.

During the same period, seven emerging Barbadian artists will take centrestage at the Central Bank of Barbados’ Exchange Interactive Centre in an exhibit titled “Non-Traditional”.

Members of the public can view by appointment the works of John Alleyne, Brandon Best, Alex Gibson, Housing Area, Sydney McConney, Chris Rocket and Akilah Watts.

The art in this exhibit will also be highlighted on the caribbean.global website.

Simultaneously, the New York-based Calabar Gallery, Ebony Art Gallery and nine individual diaspora artists will be showcased in “Diaspora Dialogue VIII”, an exhibit featuring artists from Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, the USA and Zambia.

The countries represented by participants in the 11th Annual CaFA Fair include Barbados, the Bahamas, Dominica, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and the US Virgin Islands.

“This year, patrons will have full online access to artwork in a range of media. We will engage everyone with video content and enhance the exhibitions with virtual panels and presentations,” says Anderson Pilgrim, Executive Director of the CaFA Fair.

The events kick off on March 12 at 8 p.m. with the digital launch of the “non-traditional” exhibit, which is curated by Zoe Osbourne of Mahogany Culture. This will be followed by live discussions on March 13 and 14 at 2 p.m. with Osbourne and the participating artists.

The live discussions don’t end there. On March 20 at 2 p.m., interdisciplinary artist and anthropologist Alexis AlleyneCaputo and David Emmanuel Noel, an interdisciplinary artist/curator, will lead a discussion with invited guests on the topic “Art In A Post-Digital COVID World”.

On March 24 at 5 p.m., CaFA Fair 2021 comes to a close with a live event. All the events can be accessed free of cost, online at www.cafafair.com and www.caribbean.global.

What this pandemic has shown me is that it is best not to leave things for later.

We offer 2 hours of guided instructions for a Paint & Groove painting session. You can choose your theme from within our gallery of paintings.

Private parties:- 5 people maximum who are from the same household.

Public sessions:- 4 people maximum - socialize and make art while physical distancing.$60 -$80 per person depending on canvas size. (All materials included).

NEW HOME FOR BARBADOS NATIONAL ART GALLERY The Barbados National Art Gallery (BNAG) now has a place to call home.

This announcement came from Minister with responsibility for Culture, John King, who revealed that after consultation with the BNAG, Cabinet agreed that Block ‘A’, The Garrison, would be reallocated to the Ministry as the permanent home for the gallery.

A section of the Old Town Hall Building in Cheapside, Bridgetown, will also be made available for additional exhibition space due to its ease of access to pedestrian traffic.

Minister King also indicated that a paper would be submitted to Cabinet detailing a proposal for a public/private partnership to undertake the major repairs and renovations, as well as the out-fitting of both buildings.

The public, particularly the artistic community, has long advocated for a national gallery. Successive committees and boards of the BNAG have been working with Government, particularly since 2007, when the Barbados National Art Gallery Act was proclaimed, to make this a reality.

Last Friday, members of the Board of the BNAG were on hand to witness the handover of the keys to Block ‘A’, The Garrison, by the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Rural Development to Minister King.

During this visit, it was noted that Block ‘A’ was in generally good condition, but transformation of the property, into a world class gallery space, would require significant investment to upgrade the building.

CATAPULT | A CARIBBEAN ARTS GRANT Kingston Creative, Fresh Milk and the American Friends of Jamaica | The AFJ introduce CATAPULT | A Caribbean Arts Grant – a group of six new initiatives supporting Caribbean Creatives. These funding opportunities will increase the visibility of over 1,000 Caribbean-based artists, creatives and cultural practitioners to global audiences, provide much needed financial support, and develop the creative skills of our artists. Now more than ever in light of COVID-19, it is critical to think about artists having an online presence, valuing the work of Caribbean artists, and enabling their growth.

CATAPULT will target participants living and working across the Dutch, English, French, and Spanish regions. This four-month comprehensive arts programme includes online events, art writing and journalism sessions, technical training, residencies and virtual discursive salons.

CATAPULT is particularly interested in working with practitioners who are exploring the broad critical themes of Culture, Human Rights, Gender, LGBTQIA+, and Climate Justice from Caribbean perspectives and especially welcomes applications from those who do not have permanent employment at this time.

CATAPULT will increase the capacity of Caribbean-based artists to navigate the digital space and learn new ways to connect with diverse global audiences. It will also promote the visibility of selected cultural practitioners by expanding online content from the region, enabling the region’s artists to engage wider audiences while contributing to the potential of earning beyond their borders.

The collaboration will support the following projects:(i) Caribbean Artist Showcase, (ii) Caribbean Creative Online, (iii) Digital Creative Training, (iv) Consultancy Vouchers, (v) Lockdown Virtual Salon and (vi) Stay Home Artist Residency.

Gecko Getaway by Sue Trew When author and illustrator Sue Trew was asked by Carla Daniel from the University of the West Indies (best known for her work with turtles) and Isabel Vique from Fauna & Flora International to produce her next book about the Barbados leaf-toed gecko, she readily volunteered.

With her Turtle Tracks Family series of books designed to inspire young environmentalists, Sue was enthusiastic to be part of a campaign - also involving the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification - to increase awareness of the island’s endemic gecko.

In her studio at home, she worked on the project during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Sue enjoyed weaving facts about the gecko and about its plight, into a story, creating nocturnal illustrations and designing a plush toy of Gink, the story’s main character. The complete series can be found in her family’s Best of Barbados Gift Shops which she runs with her husband, Chris. Their airport location is already open, on-line shopping with local pick-up is available and their south and west coast locations will be open towards the end of October. www.best-of-barbados.com

Dempstu Simmons Jr and EmpressZingha Simmons of Gine On creating ‘Virtual Visuals’ in collaboration with Oneka Small of Artists Alliance Barbados FOLKLORE REBIRTH: Re-imagining Bajan folk characters A virtual art gallery of original artwork by artists and designers and their interpretation of some of Barbados’ traditional folk characters reborn in a modern setting. Collaborated on with Artists Alliance and Oneka Small.

The artwork will be digitally mounted up on the site gineon.com/virtual-visuals and displayed in a visually appealing way. During this period the curators will also select pieces to be mounted in the physical gallery by Artist Alliance The Print 2020.

When the world gives you lemons...

The Studio Art BFA programme culminates with a Portfolio exit review. The final year students present a cohesive body of work to their advisors and a guest external examiner. This assessment comes after a series of Advanced Studio courses in which they develop both technical and theoretical aspects of their practice. Finally, a curated exhibition of their best work is unveiled in the Morningside Gallery at the Barbados Community College.

The global pandemic gave us an entirely new set of challenges. The programme was thrown into turmoil, but we adapted. The students and faculty found ways to continue. Separated from the studios, the students produced, installed and documented work in their own homes. Though far from ideal, courses went online and the final review was re-conceived as a series of video conferences.

After all of this, it is with great pleasure that we present the 2020 Portfolio exhibition, reimagined online. As always, it is a curated selection of what the students have produced. We hope that Antidote will offer some needed relief from all that ails in this moment. But true relief does not come as a candy-coated sugar pill, this is not escapism. This antidote is about interrogation and reflection. If we seek change we must learn to look at ourselves, at how we encounter, construct and navigate our lives. Yes, some of the work has been inspired by recent events, but the thematic concerns were established long before. It is no surprise that the work feels particularly prescient, issues do not suddenly appear out of thin air.... those that look, see.”

Instead, we are planning to host the tours a little later in the year —November 13/14 and December 11/12, 2021— in the hope that we can host the tours in a safe and responsible manner.

Created in 2016, The Barn Arts Centre is dedicated to the promotion and development of art-based learning. Our mission is to provide a unique learning environment for diverse audiences to experience a range of art based programs. The Centre provides a space for the community and local resource persons to offer and conduct classes and workshops in painting, drawing, pottery, and textiles. We are dedicated to providing an environment that is meaningful to the arts in Barbados.

Located on the breezy Small Ridge Plantation in Christ Church, (just ten minutes away from Sheraton Centre. The Barn Arts Centre offers an escape from the quickening pace of life. Here you can be immersed in an environment that fosters your creativity.

Our 570 square foot studio is equipped to provide more than adequate space to conduct a variety of classes and workshops. The studio is well lit and ventilated and can comfortably accommodate up to 15 persons. We offer a variety of opportunities for learners, including exhibitions, artist lectures, and single workshops, as well as adult and youth classes. Our artistic programming continues to be essential to our goal of inspiring creativity, fostering self-discovery, and nurturing an appreciation of the arts.

The Founders of The Barn Arts Centre are Jo- Anne Johnson and Juliana Inniss. Jo Anne started doing ceramics as a hobby in 1982 and has operated a ceramics studio since 1987, providing services and supplies to people who wished to do slip casted ceramics as a hobby. She has taught many different finishing techniques to her students and learnt many more through experimenting, and trial and error.

Juliana has been working with pottery and ceramics since 1992. She began by hand-painting local pottery with bold and colourful designs. After graduating University she made the decision to pursue her passion for art through the medium of ceramics. Juliana has worked with a number of techniques such as casted ceramics, handbuilding, surface decoration and raku firing.

Juliana was first introduced to Raku in 2006 during a two week residency in St. Thomas USVI, with this exposure Juliana began mixing her own glazes, constructed her own kiln and has been Raku firing since then. https://www.facebook.com/thebarnartcentre /

The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

Museum of parliament The Museum is open on: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Guided tours are conducted subject to availability.
