Mixed-Use Residential ARCH 508, Fall 2023

Programs Used: ▪ Revit ▪ Twinmotion ▪ Adobe Skills Learned: ▪  Mass Timber Construction ▪  Multi-purpose Space Planning Purpose and Goals: ▪

Kasityötalo is a mixed-use building containing a maker space and affordable apartments and studios for up and coming artists and craftsmen. In addition to the metal and wood shops, there is also a retail space, gallery, and event space open to the public. The purpose of this place is to create a vibrant community that encourages young talent by giving it a place to flourish. Kasityötalo sits near the harbor in Helsinki, Finland. With views to the sea and a key location between some of Helsinki’s most prominent parks and importabt dock, this building has the potential to spark something new. It ties together the natural and built environment. It represents a new age of life in an everchanging landscape.

The site is located in Eira, a residential neighborhood in Helsinki, Finland. It sits adjacent to a school, accross from a vast urban park, and near the old industrial district. Unique views penetrate the site, which acts as an intersection between various aspects of the city. This idea of intersection became the driving factor in the design.

Mass Timber Construction

Design Strategies Kasityötalo aims for zero carbon design and zero energy design. Mass timber construction takes a huge step towards zero carbon design as timber naturally sequesters carbon. Passive daylighting strategies along with the use of solar and wind harvesting techniques are utilized to ensure a zero energy design.

ERNIE MILLER NATURE CENTER

14

Nature Center ARCH 209, Spring 2023 Programs Used: ▪ Rhino ▪ Enscape ▪ Adobe Photoshop ▪ Adobe Illustrator Skills Learned: ▪  Structural Framing Purpose and Goals: ▪  Ernie Miller Nature center is a place for people to come and explore nature right in their back yard. It is a place to learn, explore, and even relax. The current building has fulfilled this purpose for several years, but now it is time for a change. This new nature center will bring all of these elements together into a bright and modern building that adds to the sense of exploration. ▪  This new space provides multipurpose areas for classes, field trips, and exhibits. The building encourages its users to take a journey throughout the exhibits before entering the site.

New Building Location

Current Building

Cons: ▪  Confusing layout ▪  Deteriorating conditions due to location (Bottom of a Hill) ▪  Lack of space to expand ▪  Difficult to access due to location To combat the cons of the current building, the new building will be placed adjacent to the parking lot. This new location not only makes it more accessible, it also reduces the risk of damage to the building due to runoff. By stepping the different aspects of the building with the site it will still feel like an immersive experience into the site. A study in Fractals inspired a screen system that wraps the new building. The screens represent the nature surrounding the center and filter light into the interior in an interactive way. Fractals:

Conifer provides spacious study rooms with beautiful views towards the city of Lawrence. To enter Conifer, one takes a peaceful journey up a gentle slope, through a naturally shaded courtyard and onto a wide patio that is ideal for picnicking or studying outside. Narrowly spaced vertical columns help filter light in the patio space. Conifer also makes use of earth sheltering on the North wall, which helps keep the building cool during the summer months. The layout reflects the movement through the site to create a space with stunning views that tell a story. As students interact with the space they will be inspired by the narrative of the building. It is a place that cultivates community and encourages patrons throw open their doors and speak to the world around them. Just as the building engages with the site and interacts with its current surroundings, so must the students engage and interact with the public surrounding them.

KOREA & JAPAN 2024

30

Study Abroad Winter 2023-2024 Itinerary: ▪  10 days - Seoul, South Korea ▪  5 days - Osaka, Japan ▪  5 days - Tokyo, Japan Key Takeaways: ▪ Traveling to Korea and Japan was an eye-opening experience. I was immersed into a dense, yet walkable urban environment that was unlike anywhere I had been before. The food, architecture, and culture made for an unforgettable escapade. One of the most fascinating things to me about Tokyo and Seoul is the combination of ancient and modern architecture. I was able to learn so much about these cities just by walking from one structure to the next. From the palaces to the new construction, every building provided me with a historical context to the rich histories of these beautiful cities.
