Welcome

TO TJB GELBVIEH

2019 marks the 30th consecutive year I have registered Gelbvieh cattle. Don’t be misled by this being our 8th Annual Bull Sale. I began breeding Gelbvieh in 1988, and our initial venture was a partnership with Doyle Waters as we searched for potential donor cows that I could flush and use Doyle’s Santa Gertrudis cowherd as recipient females. I must say, at the time, I had no idea where this journey would lead me. So hear we are, thirty years later! What began as a hobby in conjunction with my veterinary practice developed into an all-consuming passion to breed the best cattle and market the most complete and uniform set of bulls to commercial cattle producers. I believe we have created a desirable and exceptional product that we offer you today. As always, our goal is to continually improve our bulls and expand our customer base. As I have said before, your confidence in our program is something we accept with pride.

that breeds every year in a 60 day window, including our ET calves. I do not believe I can keep that mature size if I continually push weaning weights and yearling weights without concern for mature size. The other EPD trait you will likely notice in our herd is relatively low Milk EPD’s. If you believe our pictures or have looked at our cow herd, I think you will not question the ability of our females to milk. Again, I can’t select for a bigger EPD. I don’t need more milk if I want to maintain udder quality and continue the 60-day calving season. Use EPD’s in your selection as you need them. But understand why you won’t find extreme numbers in this herd.

Finally, the biggest development in this past year is the addition of Russ Princ and his wife, Pam. He started last year the day before the bull sale, so this is his first full year with TJB Gelbvieh and Bickett Genetics. I have been blessed over thirty years with some exceptionally talented young men to assist our What has happened in thirty AN EFFICIENT AND ECONOMICAL program. I was typically able to hire straight from years of breeding Gelbvieh COW HERD IS BASED ON MATURE college and although they lacked experience, they cattle? Without the search COW SIZE AND FERTILITY. were willing to learn and adopt my philosophy. Fast for Gelbvieh donors, I never forward to Russ’ arrival. He brings twenty years of experience would have met Alisa (now my wife of 28 years). Consequently, I in cattle management as well as the experience of working and wouldn’t have raised two awesome daughters, Kelsie and Katelyn. Nor would I have acquired my new son-in-law, Bo Wilson (who managing bull studs. His work ethic and his dedication to by the way is the son of one of my best friends and the grandson of accomplish is unparalleled. I really think I have learned more from him than he has me! Alisa and I are thrilled to have Russ my second set of parents). I wouldn’t have met some of the best and Pam here, and we look forward to what we can accomplish friends and fellow breeders of Gelbvieh cattle around the US and together. Our operation is in excellent hands. Canada. Needless to say, not only do I believe this is the greatest Continental breed of cattle, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Finally, as always, thank you for your time to consider TJB breed for making me who I am today. Gelbvieh for your provider of Gelbvieh and Balancer Bulls! I am often asked about our EPD’s. I do believe in the value of EPD’s, but also I think you use them only as part of the equation. Furthermore, I believe EPD-strength is created in volumes of data collection, therefore, a breed this size is limited somewhat by our smaller numbers. It is my true belief that an efficient and economical cow herd is based on mature cow size and fertility. Todd’s Cell: (423) 667-3799 | todd@bickettgenetics.com Because of that, we try to maintain a 12-1350 pound cow herd tjbgelbvieh.com • Facebook: TJB Gelbvieh

The Story OF TJB GELBVIEH TJB Gelbvieh began in 1988 in Chickamauga, GA. Dr. Bickett had the opportunity in his large animal veterinary practice to experience Gelbvieh cattle. The initial attraction to this great breed was their performance and disposition, as well as their superior milking ability. Dr. Bickett then began his search for elite Gelbvieh genetics to utilize in his ET program. Our continued search for dominant donor females led us to Beartooth Ranch in 1992. The real breakthrough in the direction of the TJB program came through the purchase of FLK Hochger 108N. She proved to be the first real impact female in the program. The future purchases of Vickie Vail, Vickie V, Lady Granite 432S, Lady Granite 2001E, and Lady Granite 2079L formed the base of females still working today. The program today is still based on the same philosophy to identify and utilize proven cow families. TJB Gelbvieh is a family owned and operated farm with a focus on superior genetics and an emphasis on customer satisfaction. TJB is proud to be involved in the beef industry and the Gelbvieh breed in particular. Gelbvieh cattle will play a role in the future of the beef industry and TJB genetics will be a factor in that development.

HYBRID VIGOR WITH THE Maternal Advantage TJB Gelbvieh is a family-owned and operated farm with a focus on superior genetics and an emphasis on customer satisfaction. We strive diligently to produce elite bulls and females that will increase profitability for the commercial cattle industry and seedstock producers. Our entire program evolves around the female. We believe as a breed we truly are the most maternal of all Continental breeds today. Stacking dominant females in the pedigrees for multiple generations provides us with the consistency we think necessary to be genetic providers not genetic multipliers. TJB Gelbvieh has focused on cow families in a structured breeding program for thirty years. Our herd emphasis has been fertility and longevity generated from a moderate framed, deep-bodied female that stems from a superior individual. We have elected to only do Genomic Enhanced EPD’s on a few select lots. Any bulls tested will have the GE logo. If you need the GE EPD’s to qualify for some of the state’s that offer financial assistance for such bulls, we will get those done after the sale for you. Any questions? Please call Todd. All bulls that were eligible have been tested for coat color unless they were homozygous black by birth. All bulls will be listed as HB (homo black), Black-RC (have a red gene), or Red. Bulls listed as HP (homozygous polled) have either been tested or most likely, assigned HP status by birth right. Although we are comfortable with this approach, it is not 100% guaranteed.

MATERNAL EXCELLENCE

with these bulls

337M is the epitome of the program at TJB Gelbvieh. This is truly a female that is moderate in stature and sound in structure. Her udder quality is phenomenal! Our good friend Dan Warner commented when he saw her in production that she could be the best PB Gelbvieh cow he had seen. I think she deserves consideration. We chose Raindance as the Angus sire of choice not only because of his style, mass, and length of body, but also to combine 2 maternal giants in 337M and 4136. If you are looking for a sire that can produce you a “keeping” set of females, here they are. Don’t assume because these are not homozygous black, they can’t help you. I had the privilege to view a set of commercial females that Rodolfo created with a 337M/Matrix son. As mature commercial cows, they were stunning. Buy from the first 4 lots with confidence they can impact your future!

This bull is certainly an individual that will capture your eye on sale day. He is a complete package and produced from an up and coming donor, 579C. 579C is a Big Show daughter by 921U that sold the second- high selling heifer in this past sale to Warner Beef Genetics in Nebraska. Her sister is in the calving group this year and could be as nice a female as ever walked the pastures here. This bull had a 107 ratio on WW & YW and weaned at 56% of his dam’s bodyweight.

Lot

6

Lots 7 & 8 are sons of a full sister to 4104C, 495B. Their dam was flushed this past year and embodies the size and type female we think are essential to a productive commercial herd. These bulls will keep your replacement females the right kind.

This bull is similar to Lot 5 in type and kind and is a standout in this group. Another Dalhart son (High selling bull we purchased from Warner Beef Genetics in 2017) from a 921U daughter. The Sandhills 0065X females have become the next generation of dominating females in our program and 4104C is certainly one of the good ones.

588C is a sixth-generation donor for TJB Gelbvieh. Lot 10 is one of several Roundhouse sons offered. You will notice a limited number of sires used as well as a small group of cow families represented. I really believe consistency can only be achieved by a strategic approach in our breeding philosophy. Although there are many variables involved in creating bulls for our customers desires, we stay true to our core beliefs to produce the most uniform set of bulls for your evaluation. This bull ratioed 110 at weaning and 112 yearling and weaned 60% dam’s weight.

Management OF THE BULLS SELLING Bulls were weaned in April and given boosters with Bovi-Shield Gold FP L5 in 2 weeks. They were dewormed with Cydectin injectable at that time. After weaning, bulls were all fed together in a 50 acre pasture and fed 10 pounds of Elite Creep Feed (15%CP commodity based ration) from Performance Feeds. They grazed a limited period on summer annuals (limited due to poor stand!). From July through sale they have been grazing Crabgrass, Dallis grass, and Bermuda grass pasture. Due to the intense heat this summer, they were not increased on feed amount until mid-September at which time we progressed the bulls up to 10 pounds twice a day for total of 20 pounds until sale time. We feel the slower development of these bulls will be beneficial as they go out to breed cows.

OCT Cows - Bovi-Shield Gold FP5+L5 Deworm with Safe-Guard Multi-Min NOV/DEC Calves: Inforce 3 Ultrabac-7

Yearling data was taken on September 5th and vaccinated with Vira-Shield 6 + L5 and dewormed with Synanthic. BSE’s done in mid-October. A visual of our Herd Health Protocol is shown to your right.

Productive Female

921U

Dam of Lots 12-16

Most Productive DAUGHTER OF 337M 921U has been the most embryo prolific, consequently, she and her daughters will play a larger role in the “Anissa” family. We recently calved daughters by Outright, Lifeline, and Big Show. They are as complete a group of sisters as I ever produced. 921U has also produced our entry into the 2020 NWSS Balancer Bull Futurity, TJB Rebel Yell 804F. We feel he will be super competitive in this arena. His full sister will accompany him to show on the Hill in Denver. We lost 921U this year but her legacy remains in competent feet!

Lot 17 is an exceptional bull that will rank at the top of your list of bulls. He is the natural calf of 359Z that is a daughter of our most coveted donor 149X. 359Z has WW ratio of 4 @ 109 and YW ratio of 4@106. She weaned this bull at 51% of body weight and her first calf at 62%.

Last natural calf of long- time donor, 913U. She got hurt this year and this bull’s performance suffered a bit because of it. This mating again combines two great females.

Lot 21 is another quality Dalhart son. The Dalhart calves are big bodied, and sound made. This bull fits his type. He ratioed 104 and 101 and weaned 57% of dam’s weight.

Dominic is easily the bull we could have started this year’s sale. He is a BA75 red bull with as much spring of rib and thickness as any bull offered. He is the son of a female we purchased from Diamond D Ranch in North Dakota. This is the kind of production we were hoping for. His $Cow EPD and his Stayability both rank in the Top 1% of the breed with acceptable growth numbers. He ratioed 101 at weaning and 103 at yearling. The $Cow and Stayability are traits we think fit our target because they are indicative of the maternal profitability of the Gelbvieh breed. This bull has Herd Sire potential in a red, high percentage Gelbvieh. Ratioed 101 and 103 for WW/YW and weaned 51%. Retaining 50% semen interest.

This bull is a survivor! I thought he had died several times right after he was born. An unfortunate result of our calving season is the heat and unfortunately the flies. They tried to kill him, but he wouldn’t quit. You will notice some hair loss on his back, but he still made a nice individual.

Lot 32 is one cool, cherry red bull. Talk about performance, he had a 109 WW ratio and a 103 YW ratio and weaned at 75% of his dam’s bodyweight. That could be a record here. You will love this bull!

The last two lots this year are Angus bulls. We went out and selected a few Angus females to begin an Angus component to our bull sale. This Raindance sired bull will certainly catch your eye. He is big, stout, and easy to look at. If you use Angus bulls in your program, don’t discount the quality of these two bulls. They were selected with the same qualities as our Gelbvieh cattle.

Last, but not least in this sale is another tremendous Angus bull. We chose his dam from long-time friend, John Carrel, whom we met at Beartooth Ranch in 1992. We chose this female in a joint embryo venture. Lot 53 is a stout Raindance son with tons of performance and a cool pedigree that traces back to 1905, one of the Angus breeds, best known cows. Once again, don’t miss the quality of these Angus bulls if you need one!

In fact, Chattanooga was recently named one of the “Top 45 Places to go” in the World. And it’s no wonder. Tucked between the mountains of Southeast Tennessee, along the beautiful Tennessee River, Chattanooga is one of America’s most breathtaking cities. While in town, if you’re interested in exploring what the area has to offer, we would recommend you stay in one of the many accommodations in Chattanooga. Some sights we suggest are: Incline Railway, Rock City, Tennessee Aquarium, Ruby Falls and Point Park.
