Vision Prayer Heavenly Father, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, we the faithful of Corpus Christi Parish, ask that You bless and sanctify us as we work together to implement our Vision. We ask that You guide us as we strive to love bravely, to serve radically and to meet all whom we encounter with humility and compassion. Help us to unite joyfully and lovingly as followers of your Son, Jesus, to take His message with us wherever we go. We know that by Your grace, we can make this Vision a reality. We ask this in the name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Development And Peace “People And Planet” First Fall Campaign Recently, members of Development & Peace-Caritas Canada met with Archbishop Dunn to kickstart their Fall Action campaign. The theme of the campaign is “People and Planet First” and it aims to amplify the voices of environmental defenders in the Global South. Canadians are called to action by signing a petition in support of federal legislation holding Canadian companies to account for their environmental practices and their human rights records in the Global South. ‘With this in mind, Development & Peace is hosting a national bilingual webinar to launch the campaign and hear from some of our affected partners in the Global South. Their passionate voices will inspire us all to action. The webinar will be held on Saturday, October 16, at 5:00 p.m. on Zoom. Please join us! Here is the link to register. Here in HalifaxYarmouth Archdiocese, our online workshop has been shifted to Oct 23 register here us02web.zoom.us/ meeting/register/tZYvfuGrpz8pGtG81nFxRhMc1TwueeWrfpbh After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. African Mass On Sunday November 7, 2021 the African Catholic Mass Community will be celebrating our mass with Archbishop Dunn and several African priests in the archdiocese. All are welcomed to join us for this monthly Catholic mass that is rooted in African traditions. We have a fantastic music ministry with an African choir and musicians playing African rhythms. This has been the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada for the past 4 years. The mass will take place at 3:00 pm at St Thomas More Parish (15 Caledonia Rd, Dartmouth) and will be followed by a potluck following COVID guidelines. Please bring a dish to share and your dancing shoes. Contact Lisa Dennis at mlcdbutterfly@yahoo.ca or message/follow us on Facebook @africancatholic for more information.

Tiny Shelters Program Many of us have seen the increasing news coverage regarding the intense housing shortage in our Province. In response, Archbishop Dunn named homelessness as one of our four diocesan pastoral priorities. This priority asks all of us to do what we can to combat homelessness and housing insecurity at every level and encounter the Lord Jesus in the those who do without (cf. Matthew 25:45). Archbishop Dunn invites parishes to consider supporting an emergency tiny shelter. Winter is coming and the homeless need shelter from harsh conditions. Emergency tiny shelters are one temporary solution. Placing these shelters on church properties provides a measure of protection from eviction on public land. The Archdiocese has established a support team to answer questions and help parishes with this undertaking while continuing to explore other initiatives. If your church community would like more information on this program please contact John Stevens: jstevens@halifaxyarmouth.org

Pope Francis’ has released a message for the XXXVI World Youth Day. His message is available online. This year the Holy Father invites dioceses to locally recognize World Youth Day, on the Solemnity of Christ the King (21 November) with the theme: “Stand up. I appoint you as a witness of what you have seen” (cf. Acts 26:16).

3rd in a Series of Questions & Answers from our Canadian Bishops “When the Canadian Bishops came together in Plenary Assembly in September, there was consensus that Catholic entities needed to do more to address the suffering experienced in Canada’s residential schools.” (CCCB) Starting last week, and continuing over these next two weeks, we will provide you with some more information from our Bishops. This is the final in a series of Questions & Answers from our Canadian Bishops. They have prepared these Q&A to provide answers to some commonly asked questions. Here is the third and final instalment. You can find the full text of their apology at https://www.cccb.ca/letter/statement-of-apology-by-thecatholic-bishops-of-canada-to-the-indigenous-peoples-of-this-land/

Q. The Church’s last fundraising campaign only raised $3.5 million, short of a $25 million goal. Why will this time be different? A. When the Canadian Bishops came together in Plenary last week, there was clear consensus that Catholic entities needed to do more in a tangible way to address the suffering experienced in Canada’s residential schools.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops was not party to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. However, we understand that there was widespread disappointment in the underperformance of the “best efforts” campaign launched by participating Catholic entities. We understand that this campaign represented a sincere, national push to engage Catholics and nonCatholics in fundraising projects that would advance healing and reconciliation.

To this end, the Bishops of Canada are making a nation-wide collective financial commitment to support healing and reconciliation initiatives for residential school survivors, their families, and their communities. With a target of $30 million over up to five years, this will include initiatives in every region of the country.

This work included outreach to major donors, regional committees tasked with engaging local businesses, and pew collections across the country. It did not yield the results that many had hoped for and we intend to learn from the challenges that participating entities faced in reaching their goals.

There is no question we have significant work ahead of us. At the same time, we have a shared commitment and resolve to leave a lasting legacy of healing and reconciliation. We intend for this work to be a grassroots effort, motivated and inspired by discussions with Indigenous partners across the country. Informed by our consultations, we are committed to developing and announcing a national fundraising plan in November.

Q. Why did it take so long for the Church to apologize for their role in the Residential School system?

Regarding failures of the CCEPIRSS campaign:

A. We have heard the pressing demands from our Indigenous brothers and sisters for an official apology by the Roman Catholic Church of Canada. That is why the Catholic Bishops of Canada, gathered in Plenary, issued an unequivocal apology for the Church’s role in the residential school system.

We recognize that our own, collective apology could have come sooner. But we did not wait for this important moment to begin walking on the road towards reconciliation. We know that there is much more to do in the long walk towards healing and reconciliation, and we will continue to look to our Indigenous brothers and sisters to guide our efforts. Q. Was the Church avoiding apologizing because of legal concerns ? A. No. We recognize that our own, collective apology could have come sooner. But we did not wait for this important moment to begin walking on the road towards reconciliation. Further, we’ve been encouraged by the formal apologies previously issued by local dioceses and religious orders known to have been involved in the residential school system.

We’re looking for people to start Discipleship Quads Not just another small group program or Bible study ... A Discipleship Quad is a group of four people who journey together as disciples through weekly gatherings of fellowship, ongoing conversion, and learning. This 44 week path of accompaniment fosters growth through prayer, accountability, and authentic relationships in a proven format. Out of a passion to combat these obstacles and help people to have the relationship with Christ they desire, Franciscan University of Steubenville has created the Discipleship Quad.

We are seeking people to start up a Discipleship Quad. All the materials will be provided. Open to all members of Corpus Christi. Materials will be sent to your community church.
