Corpus Christi ISD has introduced its new Associate Teacher program, an initiative designed to address teacher shortages by expanding the pool of eligible educators. Following the CCISD Board of Trustees’ approval of the program in October, 85 associate teachers have joined classrooms across the district. This program allows instructors from community colleges or four-year universities, as well as individuals holding a bachelor’s degree who have not yet obtained full teaching certification, to step into classrooms and contribute to student learning. Most of the new hires were CCISD paraprofessionals and substitute teachers the district selected for promotion under the new program. Like many districts nationwide, CCISD has faced challenges in recruiting due to the ongoing teacher shortage. This program helps fill vacancies and ensures students continue receiving quality instruction without disruption by authorizing qualified individuals to teach while they complete their certification. Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Prezas highlighted the long-term benefits of the initiative. “This program not only helps schools meet immediate staffing needs but also strengthens the future of the education workforce by giving aspiring teachers hands-on experience,” he said. The district will continue to recruit associate teachers to support students better and enhance classroom learning.
