Apprenticeships can also take you higher, with a range of new Higher Apprenticeships now available, you may be able to continue your apprenticeship on to degree-level. Many apprenticeship programmes also offer UCAS tariff points giving you the chance to go on to university if you want to later in life. Apprenticeships can also lead on to further professional qualifications that could advance your career.

DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY COURSE? After GCSEs you are able to access three-years of full-time study free of charge, and you can do an apprenticeship at any age (if you are 18+ your employer will have to contribute to apprenticeship fees).

GCSE GRADES ARE CHANGING The new GCSEs will be graded 9 to 1, instead of A* to G, with grade 4 being a pass and grade 9 being the highest and set above the current A*. The new system is intended to help provide more differentiation, especially among higher achieving students. By 2019 all GCSE results will be using this new system.

The table opposite explains the old style of grading in comparison to the new.

An introduction to English and maths Gaining a qualification in English and maths can potentially add £2,000 to your salary every year. Research shows that achieving four A* to C GCSE grades, including the vital English and maths, adds £80,000 to your earnings over your lifetime (Department for Education, March 2015).

If you haven’t gained a grade 4 in GCSE English and maths on entry to us you will be required to continue studying these subjects. We are committed to improving your English and maths skills and want to help strengthen these areas of your learning as they’ll help you to reach your next steps, whether that’s on to higher education or gaining a job. We offer an experience that is different to school by keeping your learning relevant, alongside supporting your preparation for the exam.

There is a range of English and maths qualifications available to you that will ensure you’re suitably challenged and building on existing knowledge. We’ll assess your level of English and maths and make sure you get the help and motivation you need to grow your confidence and succeed.

Transport An extensive transport network covers towns and villages across Devon. The campus is 20 minutes from the M5 motorway, 25 minutes from Exeter and 10 minutes from Exmouth. Our funding and transport team are on hand to advise you.

IN ROSEWARNE, CAMBORNE Duchy College Rosewarne is situated just outside Camborne. The beautiful grounds are spread over approximately 47 hectares and are an excellent horticultural resource with national plant collections. The campus also has a dedicated animal management centre, which houses specialist reptiles, small mammals and dog grooming facilities, and offers specialist courses in agriculture, animal management, countryside, floristry, horticulture, land-based engineering, construction plant and veterinary nursing.

Transport The College has its own transport network that will collect you from a range of towns and villages from Penzance to Truro, Falmouth to St Ives. The campus has ample car parking with bicycle shelters and showers.

We offer three options for you to start your studies in the animal management industry depending on your GCSE results. Our Level 3 course offers you the choice of university study or employment on successful completion of your course. Our Level 2 and Level 1 courses are ideal should your GCSEs not be what you expected, with the option to progress to Level 2 or Level 3.

Where: Bicton College, Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland Our state-of-the-art animal management centres at Bicton College and Duchy College provide dedicated access to a huge range of animal species: meerkats, coatis and lemurs at Bicton’s animal husbandry school; exotics, birds and farm animals at Duchy Rosewarne; small mammals, farm livestock and horses at Duchy Stoke Climsland and zoo animal experience at Dartmoor Zoological Park. We also have very strong links with industry.

During this course you will study animal health, feeding and nutrition, animal behaviour and communication, biology, wildlife conservation, welfare and breeding. There are one- and two-year options available with this pathway and we will work with you to decide which is best for you.

Where: Bicton College, Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland Learn the basic skills to start your career working with animals, there will be the possibility of progression to Level 2 on completion of this course. You will study how to: care for a small mammals, birds and farm animals, handle and feed animals, clean their accommodation and carry out basic health care. In order to start your apprenticeship in animal management you will need to join the Level 2 course and learn the basic skills needed to progress on to Level 3. Not ready for Level 2 study? See page 85.

ANIMAL CARE APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2 Entry requirements: two GCSEs at grade 3, you will also need an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice.

Where: Bicton College, Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland Your apprenticeship will vary depending on your employer but while with your employer you could learn about health checking, basic animal training, transporting animals, feeding, watering and exercising animals, advising customers and owners and maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

You will spend one day every two weeks on campus for 12 to 18 months and the remaining days in the workplace with your employer. While on campus you will benefit from our extensive animal management collections which, depending on where you study, includes lemurs, meerkats, goats, ferrets, exotic animals, farm animals and aquatics.

During this course you will learn to develop and demonstrate competence in a range of areas which may include promoting and maintaining health and wellbeing, animal handling and grooming, and delivering basic treatment.

Progression: on to our Animal Management Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3, or go into employment.

ANIMAL MANAGEMENT ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 3 Entry requirements: Animal Care Apprenticeship Level 2.

Where: Bicton College, Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland This apprenticeship will help you develop your management skills in the workplace and will further enhance your animal management abilities in animal health, controlling and restraining animals, animal feeding and nutrition, breeding, monitoring and evaluating animal accommodation. You will spend one day a fortnight on campus with the remaining four days spent with your employer over the course of 18 to 24 months.

Kit studied animal management at Duchy College Rosewarne where he carried out a work placement at Paradise Park and was offered a full-time job on completion of his studies. Kit then applied for an apprentice technician role at Rosewarne and on successful completion was offered a job and now works as a course manager and instructor and is a wildlife and bird expert.

Megan is from Surrey and, after looking at a range of colleges around the UK, chose Duchy College to study horses as it seemed like the perfect place for her.

“The facilities here are amazing and there is a wide range of horses to ride. The riding lessons are really helpful and I’ve improved loads within the two years. If you are thinking of studying at Duchy College make sure you get involved in everything that goes on and don’t miss out on any opportunities that come your way. We offer three options for you to start your studies in equine management depending on your GCSE results. Our Level 3 course offers you the choice of university study or employment on successful completion of your course. Our Level 2 and Level 1 courses are ideal should your GCSE results not be what you expected, with the option to progress to Level 2 or Level 3.

HORSE CARE APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2 Entry Requirements: four GCSEs at grade 3, your application will also include a numeracy and literacy test, plus an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice.

Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Rosewarne Our veterinary nursing teaching areas are designed to simulate a veterinary practice. We have a radiography room, laboratory, kennel area and operating theatre. We have many pieces of equipment that you would expect to find in a veterinary practice such as microscopes, anaesthetic machines, operating tables and a large variety of surgical instruments. We also have a range of mannequins, from life-size Labradors to not so life-size ponies, and with working farms and equestrian centres you will also have access to animals seen in large animal practices.

You will have access to all the animals in our animal management centres including mammals, fish, aquaria, birds and exotics e.g iguanas.

During this two-and-a-half year course you will learn the operational requirements of a veterinary practice, veterinary nursing duties, anatomy, physiology and genetics, animal health, wellbeing and husbandry, supporting the supply of veterinary medicines, supporting veterinary anaesthesia and preoperative and post-operative nursing care.

During this one-year course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice including animal handling and care, assisting with care and administrative duties in the veterinary environment. You will also undertake at least one day a week work experience in a veterinary practice.

An apprenticeship placement in a nursery will give you all the practical hands-on training that you need to gain a career in this sector. PATHFINDER ENTRY LEVEL 2 & 3 Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland This course is ideal if you enjoy practical work and would like to experience a range of vocational options while being supported with your learning. In order to make the most of the course you must be keen to try a variety of vocational options, including animal care, horticulture, art, catering, sport, childcare and ICT, all designed to help you decide what you might like to do as a job. You will learn new skills, build your teamwork skills, your independence and your confidence, as well as improve your English and maths.

Progression: You could continue your studies and join one of our Level 1 courses or progress to the Pathway 2 Employment course.

Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland Following on from the Pathway 2 Employment Stage 1 course, if you have a genuine desire to get a job and you can demonstrate an excellent record of behaviour and attendance, plus you have Entry Level 2 English and maths, then this course is ideal for you. You will also need to have a current Education, Health and Care Plan and be 16 to 24 years of age. This course is designed to help you move forwards and develop your confidence both at work and at college. You should expect to carry out a two day per week work placement with an employer, supported by a skills job coach. This course will challenge you, take you out of your comfort zone and put you one step ahead of the rest. More importantly it will offer you the opportunity to find out more about the benefits of a military career before you commit yourself.

You will study a range of core modules including developing team working and problem solving; map reading and navigation; understanding health, safety and hygiene; exploring aspects of physical fitness and following a uniformed services routine. You will also undertake intensive physical fitness training, experience off-campus military-based scenarios, take part in personal development activities and competitive team sports, and learn more about essential military skills such as living in the field, camouflage, concealment and survival training. As part of your training you will also work closely with HMS Raleigh, RNAS Culdrose and RAF St Mawgan and experience a three-day survival school and two five-day residential military exercises.

“I loved the variety of the course at college which helped me gain knowledge around how to get into the police and helped me develop communication and teamwork skills, which are really important in my job. Being a PC is the best job I have had by far and it’s what I’ve always hoped for. I love the unpredictability of the job. In one shift you could deal with a domestic incident, a road traffic collision, a high risk missing person, a sudden death and a drunk driver.”

This exciting course will give you the basic knowledge you need to pursue a career in this area or continue your studies to university level.

This course has been uniquely designed with industry specialists and covers a range of exciting outdoor learning experiences including first aid, security searches and rescue techniques, and emergency incident role play. Our fantastic facilities include a command and control centre, climbing tower and acres of land to train on, providing the perfect setting for this course.

Supported by industry professionals you will study a number of

modules including command and control, security procedures, ICT and cyber security, rescue skills, responding to emergency incidents, and exercise health and wellbeing. You will also be given a number of challenges to improve your leadership, communication and decision-making skills and gain valuable life and work experiences.

You will have lots of opportunities to visit and train with the emergency and community services and participate in public service events and activities. We have strong links with a number of organisations including HM Coastguard, Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service and many more. You will have lots of opportunities to undertake work experience within your local community and take part in the annual field trip to London and the Houses of Parliament.

Megan Giles, from Saltash, has won both the Andalucía Junior European Open and the AoC National Golf Championships. During the AoC Tournament Megan competed against the best FE golfers in the country, including golfers in the England team. The tournament is one of the largest annual sporting events in England, involving over 1,800 college students and 200 staff.

Where: Duchy College Stoke Climsland Nestled in the Cornish countryside and surrounded by fields and hills, this is the perfect environment to study outdoors. You will have access to facilities including a 10-metre climbing tower, rolling fields for orienteering and walking, use of an off-site lake for watersports and trips to the coast for coasteering and surfing.

During the course you will study topics including principles and practices in outdoor adventure, skills for land- and water-based activities, anatomy and physiology, water- and land-based leadership, and outdoor and adventurous expeditions. Practical activities include kayaking, mountain biking, hill walking, canoeing, surfing, coasteering, orienteering, problem solving and climbing. Plus you will have the opportunity to complete a number of additional qualifications such as BCU Paddlesport, BCU FSRT, Mountain Bike Leader and First Aid.

Sarah Cann studied both the Level 2 and 3 Agriculture Apprenticeships and now works full-time on her family’s robotic dairy farm, which has 70 cows.

“The courses gave me the knowledge I need to look after and manage the cows, as well as giving me more confidence in my abilities and helping me with my decision making. Alongside this role I carry out relief milking on two other farms, do some herd health and help manage cows on another farm. I have a real passion for cows, their health and cow signals and I love looking after them and the management side of things that comes with that.”

The type of work you will carry out during your agriculture apprenticeship will depend on your employer. As most farm businesses are small then you will find yourself playing a vital role as part of the farm staff. You will carry out a number of important and varied tasks while developing skills for your future such as preparing and cultivating sites for planting crops, operating a tractor with attachments, harvesting and storing crops and maintaining equipment and machines.

Build on the skills you gained at Level 2 and further develop your agricultural abilities, increasing your knowledge and understanding of practices relating to livestock and crop production.

You will spend most of the week with your employer, attending college for a minimum of 18 days per year. At college you will cover 50% theory and 50% practical work, which will include learning more about tractor and machinery use, nutrition, health and welfare, health and safety, environment and conservation, and welding.

British gamekeepers currently manage approximately 7.3 million hectares of the land in the UK and work closely with farm managers and foresters to help conserve both game and wildlife, using economically viable estate management policies.

During this course you will have access to Duchy College’s 283-hectare estate and woodlands where you will care for the College’s pheasants and learn about the management of game bird, deer, farm habitat, woodlands and fisheries. You will also study land-based machinery, working dogs, pest and predator control and will organise a number of shoot days from start to finish which will include costings, promotion, event preparation and running the activities on the day.

This course is very active and you will be based outdoors most of the time studying a number of topics including tree climbing, pruning and dismantling, tree identification, planting and care, woodland management, plant and soil science, tree felling and chainsaw use, tree surveys, pests and diseases.

It takes great skill and specialist training to identify problems with trees and plants, to know how and when to fell or prune a tree, to turn branches into woodchip or to replant trees. Our Level 2 apprenticeship will form the foundation for you to join the arboriculture industry and the wide range of occupations available in this area.

While learning the practical side of arboriculture with your employer, you will also be required to attend college one day a week, where you will learn how to plant and help trees and shrubs to establish, how to identify trees and shrubs, the correct techniques for chainsaw work and tree climbing, health and safety, risk assessments and pollution control.

The area of arboriculture you specialise in will depend on the work your employer carries out. This could be work in a garden centre, landscape design, forestry, woodland management or timber industries.

If you choose to study at Bicton College you can take advantage of the College’s estate, which houses an arboretum with veteran and specimen trees, machinery workshops, over 200 hectares of extensive parklands and lots of opportunities for you to develop your tree climbing techniques.

Study floristry in the beautiful settings of our Bicton College or Duchy College Rosewarne campuses and take inspiration from being surrounded by acres of countryside and the diverse range of flora. This introduction to floristry course is ideal if you would like to work in a florist shop, hotel or as a supplier and is designed to help you build a wide range of practical floristry skills and knowledge, while exploring your creativity, ready for you to transfer these skills into employment and enterprise.

During the course you will need to undertake a minimum of 40 hours of industry experience and you will learn a range of floristry designs which will include weddings, tied, funeral and floral designs. The course also includes function and event decoration, planning and displays. You will also learn flower and foliage care. You will be trained by industry specialists who run their own businesses or work within the industry, who will deliver, instruct and provide you with up-to-date industry techniques within floristry.

We also offer a fast track route to floristry which condenses the Certificate and Diploma into one-year.

Darren previously ran a commercial landscaping company and trained apprentices in the workplace. He is now team lead for work-based learning for horticulture, arboriculture and floristry.

As well as developing new flavours, as a food technologist you will also look at different ways of keeping food fresh or converting raw ingredients into products that can be produced on a large scale. You will also need to ensure that products have the right colour, shape and consistency when they are manufactured, as quality control is extremely important when producing food.

Our Duchy College Stoke Climsland campus is home to our £4.7 million Food Innovation Centre. This centre is the only

Dairy With more than 96% of people regularly consuming dairy products, the dairy industry plays a key role in the health of the nation. To follow the apprenticeship route and earn while you learn, you will need to find a company with an element of land-based engineering to employ you. The majority of your time will be spent in the workplace with one day a week at college learning theory and the latest maintenance and repair techniques. LAND-BASED TECHNOLOGY APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2 Entry requirements: Five GCSEs at grade 3, including English, maths and IT and to be employed in a relevant role.

Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Rosewarne This two-year apprenticeship is ideal if you want to become a qualified engineer. This apprenticeship provides an ideal foundation for a wide range of occupations within the engineering field. You must have good practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically.

At Duchy College Rosewarne you will attend college on day-release from your employer, if studying at Bicton College you will attend college in a series of block weeks, developing a range of skills including fabrication and welding, maintenance engineering and machining. The apprenticeship route allows you to tailor your learning to suit your job and the skills required.

There are numerous machines available in this sector and your career could see you working on precision farming machinery, carrying out a variety of tasks: the construction and maintenance of mechatronics, remote sensors, robotic systems and farming automation; designing, installing and maintaining dairy equipment; maintaining and repairing grounds care machinery on golf courses or football grounds, off-road vehicles such as ATVs used by land owners and farmers on larger estates, forestry equipment such as chainsaws and timber production plants or food technology manufacturing plant operations and repairs.

LAND-BASED TECHNOLOGY ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 3 Entry requirements: Level 2 apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant role.

HOW TO BECOME A LAND-BASED ENGINEER....

This advanced-level apprenticeship can take up to two years to complete (either via day-release study or a block release training programme).

At Level 3 units of study are selected that build on the work completed at Level 2, but focus on your employer’s specific needs. These may include advanced welding skills, computer-based diagnostics or electrical systems maintenance.

There is also a Higher Apprenticeship available at Level 4 if you wish to continue earning while you learn to degree-level. Many employers maintain apprentices as full-time staff within their organisation, and increase salaries when apprenticeships are completed.

This specialist two-year apprenticeship offers you the chance to get your Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) card to enable you to operate plant machinery. It also trains you in the more specific skills with regards to work in groundworks.

You’ll gain insight into the techniques of modular paving, masonry walling, earth moving, roadbuilding and pipe laying, and drainage.

Groundworks can be heavy, dirty work and will be outside in all weathers, you need to be physically fit, confident at working at heights and often in confined spaces.

Progression: Into the workplace as a qualified groundworks operative with an average starting salary of £20,000.

Steve has worked for over 24 years in the education sector joining the Cornwall College Group three years ago. Steve is working with his team to develop and deliver courses that support learners to re-engage and enable them to pursue their own individual career aspirations.

Sport and fitness INTRODUCING OUR TEAM OF SPORTS MAKERS Your experience of sport at school could be of glory days competing in a school sports team, an academic approach if you studied PE at GCSE or maybe you just shudder at the memory of dragging yourself around a cold wet field once a week.

At college sport is different, sport is for all and sport is definitely fun.

Our team of sports makers are here to support all learners on all courses to get into physical activity and encourage you to have a healthy lifestyle.

There are traditional team sports, such as football, our campus in Pool is home to the West Cornwall Football Development Centre. We have a specialist watersports centre at Stithians Lake in partnership with South West Lakes, equestrian centres at two campuses at Bicton and Duchy Colleges plus four state-of-the-art fitness centres with the latest gym equipment, classes and instructors (www.cornwall.ac.uk/evolve) offering student discount membership packages.

We have a classroom on Tolcarne beach if surfing is your thing, we run bubble football sessions at Freshers’ Fairs and host Segway tours around some amazing Cornish countryside. Learning Advice Team While at college the Learning Advice Team will provide you with a consistent source of information, advice and support. They will oversee your experience and progress across the whole of your study programme acting as a vital independent link between your specialist programme tutors, English and maths tutors, employability and work experience co-ordinator and, where appropriate, your parents/guardians. The Learning Advice Team work closely with your personal tutor to ensure you enjoy a brilliant learning experience. The team will also support you with a variety of pastoral, health and welfare issues and help signpost you to other sources of support if required.

Depending on your campus, the Learning Advice Team may consist of a senior learning adviser, a learning adviser and/or personal learning advisers.

Student Liaison Officer (SLO) If you have a question and are not sure who to ask, or just want to chat, speak to the SLO on your campus. They can help you with everything from getting involved with Cornwall College Students’ Union (CCSU) activities to information and advice on confidential issues such as sexual health including C-Card, drink and drugs, bullying and personal safety. They can also help you with enrichment and engagement by organising trips, activities and fun days for your group or campus, which is all great for your CV.

Learning Centres There are nine learning centres across our campuses, providing you with access to thousands of books, journals and online resources to support your studies. Computer access When you enrol with us you will be issued with a computer account and email. This will give you access to range of software and resources this includes: • the College’s Wi-Fi • access to Office programmes • your course details and progress information • a printing account (with some preloaded credit) • other software and online resources to support your study

Supporting you Moodle Moodle is a Virtual Learning Environment, which is an internet tool where you can: • access resources unique to your course • join in discussion forums with other students • contact tutors and other students via email and messaging Moodle is available 24 hours a day, every day of the week.

Funding support This funding is to help you meet extra costs e.g. transport and childcare, is administered by the College and is means-tested.

Guaranteed Student Bursary If you are under 19 and living in care, a care leaver, receiving Income Support in your own right, a disabled young person in receipt of both the Employment Support Student Allowance and Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you will be entitled to a Guaranteed Student Bursary of up to £1,200. You will need to apply through the FE Bursary Fund for this.

Transport If you live more than three miles from college you may be eligible for support for your travel costs. If you are under 19 at the beginning of the academic year in September and are attending a full-time course at the local designated institution (usually the provider of your course nearest your home) you will qualify for subsidised travel.

Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Bicton College campuses provide a transport network running across the Cornwall and Devon border.

The Cornwall College Group provides financial support towards a bus pass for students aged 16 to 18 who qualify for the funding support. Students will be expected to use a college bus where possible. A contribution towards travel costs can also be made to students aged 19 or over at the start of their course. These awards are means-tested and applied for through the scheme. Transport is subject to change by local government.

Free college meals If you are aged 16 to 18 and received free school meals, or if your circumstances have recently changed and you are now in receipt of certain benefits, you may qualify for free college meals. Contact Student Services for further details.

Advanced Learning Loans If you are thinking about continuing your education, are over 19 years of age and want to study a Level 3 qualification or above, there are government-based loans available, depending on your chosen course. There is also a means-tested, cash-limited bursary to help you meet transport costs and childcare costs.

Care to Learn (for learners aged up to 20 years) Care to Learn is a national scheme for childcare funding if you are a parent under 20 years of age. This childcare support will not affect your own family’s benefits or allowances. If you are under 20 years of age this support is not means-tested and you do not have to be in receipt of benefits or have a low income in order to have your childcare paid for. Please contact any of our Student Services teams for more details.

Childcare (for learners aged 20+ years) We are keen to help you with the cost of your childcare whilst studying. The childcare subsidy you receive will depend upon the details submitted by you on your funding form and childcare support application form. If you are eligible for support this will normally be paid direct to your registered childcare provider.

Day nurseries run by Flying Start operate at Cornwall College Camborne, Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Cornwall College Saltash – www.flyingstart.uk.com. A day nursery is also available at Bicton College www.saplingschildrenscentre.com.

Accommodation

If you do not live within reasonable travelling distance of the College you may wish to consider seeking accommodation nearby. Duchy College Stoke Climsland has full-board and self-catering residential places available. For students at Bicton College there are full-board residential places available. Full Residential Bursaries are available for eligible students. With the exception of students awarded Residential Bursaries, accommodation costs are normally the responsibility of the student, parent or carer. Benefits relating to support There are provisions under the Jobseeker’s regulations, which allow you to study whilst seeking employment without losing your benefits. If you are claiming out of work benefits you should discuss your proposed attendance at college with your employment advisor, before enrolling on a course. It may be possible for you to return to study if you receive other benefits (e.g.

Income Support, Housing Benefit etc.), but you must check with the relevant benefit office before enrolling on the course of your choice. Your benefits may be affected by returning to study, so check this out first.
