APPRENTICE

Cultivate Talent, Transform Your Business

Teach people your trade – in a way that works for you – and watch your business grow. Employ an apprentice, and enable people to earn while they learn, gaining recognised qualifications in your specialist industry.

Apprenticeships combine work-based training with a day of college study, across at least of 30 hours, each week.

We offer a wide range of apprenticeships across Cornwall and Devon, in everything from construction, engineering and carpentry, to agriculture, accounting, catering and hairdressing.

Apprentices can be any age, from 16 onwards, and attract a range of applicants, from young people entering the world of work, to existing staff who want to expand or diversify their skillset.

Why employ an apprentice?

There are countless reasons to employ an apprentice. It’s an opportunity to develop specific skills to help your business grown, a chance to gain an extra pair of hands to help spread your workload, as well as benefiting from fresh new perspectives and the latest innovations in your field. In addition, you’ll receive support from The Cornwall College Group every step of the way.

Why you’ll love our apprenticeships:

Train staff to fit your individual business needs

Fill skills gaps, without the cost of recruitment, picking from talented and motivated candidates

Increase productivity and your bottom line

Build loyalty and dedication, with employees who are invested in your business from the very start of their career

Offer on-the-job training in a safe working environment

Build a culture of learning and development

Promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace

Get ongoing support from a dedicated Apprenticeship Advisor, throughout the length of the apprenticeship

Hire an apprentice aged between 16 and 18, and you’ll be eligible for £1,000 in addition to any funding you’ll receive.

What will it cost?

You will need to pay your apprentice at least the Apprentice National Minimum Wage pay rate of £6.40* per hour during their first year, though many employers choose to pay more than this. Paying apprentices the National Living Wage Rate can help them to stay motivated and feel valued as part of your business.

*As of 1 April 2024. Rates change every year.

OUTSTANDING VALUE >>

The value of apprentices outweighs their associated costs. Most employers see a yearly gain of between £2,500 and £18,000 per apprentice during their training period*

The question is, can you afford NOT to take on an apprentice?

What support is available?

The great news is that there’s lots of support available to help fund the training costs of your apprenticeship, as well as a £1,000 incentive for every young apprentice you hire under the age of 19. What you pay towards the apprenticeship will depend on the size of your business, and the age of the apprentice you employ:

£ Small and medium employers employing a 16-21 year old apprentice will be fully funded

Small or medium employers employing a 22+ year old apprentice will be 95% funded, alongside a 5% employer contribution

Large employers (with a pay bill in excess of £3 million per year) will fund apprenticeships through their Apprenticeship Levy account

Our Apprenticeship Advisors will be able to talk you through your funding options and answer any questions you might have.
