Cornish Issue 40 - 2016

Love is in the air ... So, did you propose to the love of your life on February 29? We all know that 2016 is a Leap Year, which not only means that we got an extra day in February, but women all over the world had that onceevery-four-year opportunity to take matters into their own hands and do the proposing themselves. The necessity for a Leap Year came about because it actually takes 365.2422 days for the earth to comletely orbit the sun, so every four years, we have to make an adjustment to the calendar to take this into consideration. Until Julius Caesar came to power, a year consisted of 355 days with an extra 22 day month every two years. But that was a complex way of doing things and meant that important feast days fell in varying seasons, so Caesar instructed his personal astronomer, Sosigenes, to come up with a simpler system. Sosigenes devised a 365 day year with an extra day every four years to make up the ‘lost’ hours and hey-presto, Leap Years were created! The tradition of a woman proposing to a man on a Leap Year has been attributed to various historical figures but its exact origins are not really known. It is thought the tradition became commonplace in the mid 19th century and whilst it is now generally accepted all around the world, there are no statistics as to how many women do actually

Out with the old ... With the wedding industry bucking traditions, from DIY weddings to cakes made of cheese, it’s no time for ‘the dress’ to take the baton. So let’s politely usher away those strapless meringues and welcome Rasbery Pavlova - an independent, Cornish fashion brand creating handmade, customisable, mix-and-match separates for brides, bridesmaids and wedding guests alike. Designer, Dawn Freeman, told Cornish Brides: ‘We have designed a unique collection for brides who want something different. Our customers don’t want a dress to wear them, they want to wear an outfit that makes them shine as an individual. By mixing and matching different designs from the ‘onelova' collection, our brides can achieve the look they want without compromising on style.’ Dawn has worked as a designer and pattern cutter in the fashion industry since graduating with a first class honours degree in 2010. Her design style has always been inspired by a ‘less is more’ approach, creating fashion which doesn’t bow to trends. After working on several bespoke commissions, Dawn was inspired to create a capsule collection for brides who wanted something unique and modern, but didn’t have the budget for a couture gown. The response was positive and immediate and Rasbery Pavlova was born. Rasbery Pavlova’s business model is simple; every order is made in-house and is fully customisable with options for fabric, colour and size. Currently available as an online service only.

don’t upstage the

BRIDE Are you going to just stand there and let someone steal your thunder on your big day? Surely no self respecting bride would ever allow that to happen . .

o bride wants to or should be upstaged on her wedding day and any guest who manages to do so is surely committing the ultimate wedding faux pas. Of course, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that some guests might deliberately set out to outshine a bride, which is a pretty rotten thing to do by any standards, but it does happen. Every bride is entitled to be the centre of attention of her special day and hopefully she knows her guests well enough to know that no-one would try to steal the limelight from her. But of course, not every bride knows each and every one of her guests that well, so it pays to be careful who you invite to your wedding. A recent survey revealed that a bride being upstaged by a guest is definitely considered to be the top ‘no-no’ as far as wedding etiquette is concerned.

N

It’s a bit of a strange situation when you think about it because it takes a very brave and uber confident woman to even think that she might be able to outshine a bride. And at what point in the proceedings does she make the decision to do so or is it just ‘one of those things’ that happen without conscious thought or intent. I suppose it is entirely possible if one of your friends is particularly beautiful and has the most amazing sense of style that she could unintentionally outdo you, but it surely goes more towards intent and behaviour on the day. So, your beautiful friend might look a million dollars, but she wouldn’t be flaunting it, whereas someone who had deliberately set out to steal your thunder would want everyone to know about it. So, do you need to be very particular about who you invite to your wedding or do you just need to be so secure in your own self that you simply will not allow anyone to get the better of you. It is something of an unwritten rule that wedding guests should not wear white, unless the bride has specifically requested them to or unless it fits in 52

Cornish Brides

with the theme of the day. At a wedding I attended a couple of years ago, the girlfriend of one of the groom’s friends (who, it has to be said, was not known at all to the bride) turned up in a very bridal-like, short white dress that was not entirely dissimilar to the one the bride was wearing; it did cause for one or two awkward moments, but whether the guest was aware that her choice of dress caused something of a stir was not entirely clear. So perhaps it is not a bad idea to make some stipulations on your invitations as to your preferred choice of dress for your guests. Most brides are entirely happy for their guests to wear pastel shades as long as the outfit is not overly ‘bridal’ in its design, but don’t be afraid to lay down your own rules of etiquette. Of course, if one of your guests turns up in a particularly provocative outfit, it could be seen as an attempt to upstage you, or it could just be viewed as tasteless, so try to not let it bother you too much. And if you’re going to be a guest at a wedding, then keep your outfit stylish, pretty and feminine, by all means, but remember the occasion and for goodness sake, don’t overdo it. So, what other breaches of wedding day etiquette did the survey reveal? Well, a mobile ‘phone going off during the ceremony figured near the top of the list. We live in a society where people seem unable to function unless they have their mobile ‘phone on them at all times, but for goodness sake, turn it off before you to into a wedding ceremony. Forgetting to buy a wedding present was another top contender along with arriving late for the ceremony. Getting drunk at the reception polled in fifth place, followed by accidentally spilling something on the bride’s dress or treading on her train. Seventh place went to parents who allowed their children to misbehave during a wedding and this was closely followed by people who laughed at the wedding vows, especially those written specifically by the bride and groom for each other. At the end of the list were family bust-ups on the day (which I thought would have rated higher) and people pushing each other out of the way in order to catch the bride’s bouquet. So, is wedding-day etiquette a minefield, or is it a simple case of commonsense. Is it too much to ask that you switch off your ‘phone before the service starts or that you watch what you drink? Our advice is to just be sensible and give a moment’s thought to how you would feel if it was your wedding day. The bride and groom should be able to look back on their day with pleasure and even the guests are entitled to enjoy themselves, so don’t spoil it for anyone. It may mean that you are remembered long after the event, but possibly for all the wrong reasons.

A Highland Fling So, we are loving these mix’n’match ideas from Walker Slater, a Scottish fashion brand that has some amazing pieces that would be perfect for your special day.

They take the traditional and breathe new life into it by using exquisite hand picked fabrics from the Hebrides to the Scottish Borders to design quality, timeless clothing. These great wool jackets look amazing over a wedding dress, especially if your groom is matching your country casual look.

Every bride is looking for something special and we love it when we come across something that is truly inspirational. We all know that the weather can make or break a wedding and it came be virtually impossible to predict the weather or know exactly what to wear on your big day.

There are an awful lot of wedding surveys and research ‘doing the rounds’ that seem to suggest that planning your wedding is far from an exciting or enjoyable time. Don’t let these bridal killjoys spoil things for you.

Can you Keep it Together? I sometimes think that if you believed everything you read about getting married, you would seriously think twice about putting that ring on your finger. So many companies seem to love undertaking research on every aspect of marriage and their statistics don’t always make for positive or inspiring reading. They would have us believe that planning a wedding is fraught with problems that will test not only your love for each other, but your relationship with just about everyone else you know and even your own sanity! For example, did you know that one survey claims that up to one in three brides will fall out with their bridesmaids at some point before, during or after their wedding and as many as 40% of brides expect to lose contact altogether with their bridesmaids once the confetti has settled. The most common cause of disagreements between a bride and her maids seems to be dress style and colour, hairstyles and arrangements over hen parties, although it seems hard to believe that such petty issues would have dire consequences on a long-standing friendship. Other reasons for fall outs between brides and bridesmaids is jealousy, with 38% of brides feeling that one or more of their bridesmaids are jealous of them and 26% saying that their bridesmaids’ insecurities about their appearance led to problems between them. Money also seems to be issue with some brides asking their bridesmaids to pay for their dresses which doesn’t always go down well and, it would appear, some bridesmaids seem to forget themselves completely and have far too much to drink at the reception and end up flirting with the groom which, perhaps not surprisingly, does not go down well with brides!

Best men seem to come in for a bit of criticism as well as one in ten brides disapprove of their partner’s choice of best man, according to yet another poll. When asked what they thought about the best man, 32% of brides confessed to exerting influence on their partner with many suggesting alternatives to their partner’s choice. 10% said they had refused point blank to allow their partner to have his first choice of best man, fearing that it could ruin their day; clearly a risk they weren’t prepared to take. And this is before we look at the statistics for family fallouts and the abundance of arguments we are told a bride and groom will have before they even make it up the aisle. So what is going on? Are things really that bad? We don’t think so, although we appreciate that a lot of couples feel a massive amount of pressure when they are in the process of organising their wedding. There are lots of people around who have an opinion - and let’s face it, some people are not exactly adept at keeping their opinions to themselves! So, is there a secret to organising the perfect wedding without losing your friends, your mind and your sanity? Not really. You just need to remember that this is just one day in your life, albeit a very important one. Keep things in perspective and try to bear in mind that this day is about the two of you and whilst it would be lovely to please everyone else, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t. As long you both enjoy the day and are happy with the way it goes, that really is all that matters. But if that doesn’t work for you, then just be ready for when that pollster stops you in the street sometime and says: ‘Do you mind if I ask you a few questions about your wedding day?’

And what about the survey that claims that an astonishing one fifth of newlyweds and engaged couples expect to divorce in the future. Yes, that’s right ... 20% of you don’t even think your marriage will last the distance. Apparently, when asked if they thought their marriage would last, 22% said they accepted this might not be the case and 21% said ‘no’ they truly did not expect to stay with their partner forever. So much for the ‘til death us do part’ bit then. Maybe that section of the marriage service should be changed to ‘til someone better comes along’!

We’ve all come across Bridezillas in our time, but tears, tantrums and foot stomping are not reserved solely for the bride-to-be. There’s enough sorry stories about frightful mothersof-the-bride circulating to make you think ... what kind of M-o-B will you be? Will you and your daughter really be slugging out the wedding plans over the kitchen table?

The Voice of Reason vs. The Control Freak o, your precious little girl has just hit you with the news that she is getting married and now the reality is starting to set in. Not only have you and the proud father probably got to stomp up a wad of cash to pay for her ‘big day’ but, perhaps more importantly, you are going to be a Mother-of-the-Bride. That’s a pretty big thing, second only to ‘I’m going to be a Grandmother’ and it takes a bit of getting used to. You’ve probably had a few tears - and more likely than not, a few glasses of wine - and now your brain is going into overdrive and it probably won’t take you more than an hour to plan the entire wedding from start to finish.

S

But hold on there; this isn’t your wedding, so you need to back up a little and take stock. You may well have your own ideas on when, where and how the wedding will be, but the decision is not yours to make, so the first thing you do need to decide is what kind of mother-of-the-bride you want to be. Of course, there will be a thousand thoughts rushing through your head: you hope that you will love the dress she chooses, you’ll be thinking about the seating plan and where to place certain guests (must remember to keep Uncle Ken well away from Auntie Sheila) and how many times you’ll allow your husband to do the ‘timewarp’ before you drag him off the dancefloor! No doubt you will be making a mental note of your favourite florist and trying to recall the name of the lady who made your neice’s wedding cake last year (you’re sure you’ve got her card somewhere) and then there’s that fabulous band who played at your best friend’s 30th wedding anniversary party ... what were they called? Any of this sound familiar? If so, don’t worry, it’s all perfectly normal. But - and for some MoB’s, this may be a pretty big ‘but’ - you are now going to have to exercise a degree of restraint and wait for your daughter to broach the subject with you. Patience not your strong point? It needs to be if you want to get to the other side of this wedding with your sanity and your relationship with your daughter intact. Now there’s nothing wrong with talking to other people about the wedding; what do you mean you’ve already called everyone in your address book to tell them the news? And no-one is going to blame you in the least if you start to make a few notes and even a few discreet enquiries - afterall, what is the saying: fail to prepare, prepare to fail and you were a Girl Guide afterall and they’re alway prepared, but just keep it to yourself, for now. One of the first things you will probably notice about your daughter’s wedding is that things have changed, perhaps considerably, since you got married and the whole wedding planning process has become far more 64

Cornish Brides

complex. The choices for couples today are immense, so the chances are your daughter is going to need you there beside her, to hold her hand, dry her tears on occasion and guide her. Most brides trust their Mum above everyone else and if you have a good relationship with your daughter, planning her wedding with her is just going to bring you closer so look forward to it, savour it and, above all, enjoy it. By the same token, as a mother who has supported and cared for her daughter since those first minutes in the Delivery Room, you will know her best and will know instinctively how much support and assistance she will need to make her wedding dreams come true. You will know when to step in and take control and when to step back and leave things to her and her fiancé. Of course, this might not come easy for you if you are a real traditionalist and we’ve all seem the pushy MoB’s as portrayed in the movies and TV sitcoms who simply take over the whole process, assuming control faster than a South American dictator and before the bride can blink, she’s booked the venue, created the seating plan, chosen the menu, sent out the invitations and just about everything else inbetween, leaving the bride, groom and groom’s family completely out in the cold. But that doesn’t sound like you and as a modern-day MoB, you will be involved as much or as little as your daughter wants you to be. So, don’t think that being a modern MoB means you won’t have an important role to play; on the contrary, it might mean that you actually get to enjoy the whole wedding planning process more than you thought.

You might even want to consider being the one to give your daughter away. Tradition dictates that the role falls to the father-of-the-bride, but this is the 21st century and anything goes. You could give a speech at the reception if you want - and your daughter agrees. There are, in fact, eight simple steps to being the perfect Mother-of-the-Bride. Follow them and you can’t go wrong:

early and be on hand to help with any last minute calls or tasks. You could even do a discreet and quick ring-around of the caterer, band, florist and cars to make sure their timings are spot-on and there are no last minute glitches. Although your daughter may think she is in control of everything, you are really the one pulling everything together behind the scenes, like any good General.

1. Number One Supporter

8. Be Proud

As a parent, you’ve already experienced the delicate balance between letting your daughter make her own mistakes and guiding her by the hand through each and every decision. Now more than ever, it is important that you resist your natural maternal instinct to protect her. At some point during every wedding, emotions run higher than a Boxing Day sale, so being a pushy and over-powering Mum is definitely not going to help. If your daughter says she wants to take care of everything herself, let her. The best way to ensure you are involved is by supporting her by letting her know you are there to help if she needs you and the chances are, at some point, she will.

This is a big day for you, so be proud and enjoy it. This is the girl you gave birth to, who you brought up, you’ve wiped her tears and her nose, you rubbed her knees when she fell and applied more plasters and bandages than you care to remember - both on her and every doll and furry toy she’s ever owned. You have made her the woman she is today and when everyone compliments her on how beautiful she looks, they are indirectly complimenting you, so be very proud.

2. Be Honest If your daughter does ask for your help or advice, give it honestly but without making it sound as thought you are simply disagreeing with her. Listen to what she has to say, consider it carefully and give an honest opinion, if possible suggesting alternatives for her to consider. But know when to back down and if she remains adamant that she is right, concede gracefully.

The world around us is changing at an alarming rate and weddings are becoming more complex, which means your role as Mother-of-the-Bride is as important as it’s ever been .. . perhaps even more so. There is so much to do and so many things to think about and your daughter will need you there, so be there for her and enjoy the experience. You may even find that it brings you closer together and strengthens your relationship. Remember, ultimately this is just one day in a lifetime and there will be so many more experiences that you will face and share in the years ahead, so face them together - as mother and daughter.

3. Don’t Forget The Other Side Be aware that your future son-in-law has a family too and they are probably just as happy and excited as you are at the prospect of this marriage. They will want to be involved, so why not suggest that both sets of parents meet for drinks early in the proceedings to discuss your respective roles and avoid any embarrassment or arguments later on.

4. Don’t Take Sides Never forget that there are two people getting married, so avoid at all cost taking your daughter’s side over her groom - or heaven forbid, taking his side over her. Whenever possible, play devil’s advocate and try to see both sides (even if you don’t).

5. Dress Accordingly Whatever you do, don’t try to upstage your daughter on her big day. Remember, you are the mother-of-the-bride, so dress accordingly. No tight-fitting, revealing or slinky outfits and no white - unless with your daughter’s approval. There is no more sure-fire way to have your daughter spitting feathers at you than if you are flaunting your mature curves across the dance floor. You should look elegant and chic and there are lots of ways you can achieve a fabulous look without hogging the spotlight.

6. Put It Into Words In case you didn’t know, mother-of-the-bride speeches are on the up, so there’s never been a better time for you to say a few words about how proud you are of your daughter and how beautiful she looks. If you’d like to make a speech, then suggest it to your daughter but remember not to overstep the boundary if she declines; it’s her party and she’s calling the shots. There’s lots of advice out there for giving the perfect mother-of-thebride speech, so take advantage of it and whatever you do, avoid too many childhood photos, no matter how adorable you think they are.

7. Stay Calm Ultimately, whether you’re a traditional or modern mother-of-the-bride, the golden rule is to stay calm and positive. If you do this while all around you are falling apart, it will not go unnoticed and you may even find that your daughter will rely on you to be the ‘voice of reason’ and her own personal oasis of calm. On the morning of the wedding, your role as mother-of-the-bride can really come into its own as your daughter and her bridesmaids start their hair and make up preparations. Wedding Jewellery with an edge Finding exactly the right jewellery for your wedding day is never easy. There is an abundance of hugely talented designers out there producing some truly stunning jewellery. So when we came across this gorgeous collection from British jeweller, Sammie Jo Coxon, we just had to share it with you. A Central St. Martins graduate, Sammie worked for Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson and Katie Hillier before deciding to design her own refined jewellery collection and the results are a beautiful mix of soft silhouettes of freshwater pearls and knife edge gold, giving pearl jewellery a contemporary and sophisticated feel. Sammie told Cornish Brides: ‘The collection was designed in-between helping my dad on his farm during harvest time. I would drive the combines and tractors, but when work came to a halt due to bad weather, I would head back to the house to design. I decided to name my collection ‘Demeter’ after the Greek Goddess of the Harvest and the Protector of Marriage, which seemed fitting on every level.’ The aesthetic of the Demeter collection is rich in graceful, geometric forms that give a sense of strength to the wearer with great attention being paid to how each piece fits. Made in London’s Hatton Garden, Demeter is comprised of rings, pendants, bracelets and interchangeable earrings with unique combinations of white sapphires, aquamarines, diamonds and freshwater pearls. Each piece embodies a timeless and diverse quality. ‘I designed Demeter with the intention of making pearl jewellery more stylish, sleek and sexy for the style savy woman of today and to banish the assumption that pearl jewellery is dated. It was a conscious design decision for every piece to have a knife edge finish and to make this a signature feature of the collection; adding a more fierce and clean contemporary look which hopefully, gives it the edge, quite literally.’ Customers can choose their own colour combinations which allows them the opportunity to exploit their individuality throughout the collection and the earrings have been designed as separate attachments, to not only create the intriguing illusion of the earring floating beneath the ear, but to give the wearer two unique looks with each purchase, taking her from day to night - or potentially five looks if purchasing both stud choices to mix and match.

a bouquet with a difference Most brides love traditional, fresh flower wedding bouquets, full of colour and a sweet aroma, but they don’t last long and unless you want to go to the time, trouble and expense of having your bouquet pressed or preserved, it will soon become no more than a memory. So it’s not surprising that alternative bouquets are becoming more popular with brides who are looking for something different and longer lasting. Take a look at these fabulous alternative bouquet ideas which can be kept forever to remind you of your special day.

Brooch Bouquets Brooch bouquets are beautiful, chic and totally unique; incorporating a stunning mix of crystals, brooches, jewellery, feathers, paper roses, everlasting flowers or sprigs of greenery and even vintage family heirlooms. Top brooch bouquet designers will delicately hand-craft bespoke designs to a bride’s specification and many will even scour antique shops to find genuine vintage jewellery to add unusual and classic pieces to each design.

Wheat and Dried Flower Bouquets Country weddings continue to be a big trend this season, so why not add a touch of the countryside to your rural wedding with a wheat sheaf bouquet? Wheat sheaves make the perfect country-style bouquet. And by adding delicately dried roses, lavender, thistles and berries, you can create bouquets to match or contrast your wedding theme.

Button Bouquets How many old buttons do you have lying around the house? If you ask your Mum or your Gran, they are almost sure to have a ‘button tin’ full to the brim with hundreds of buttons they have accumulated over the years. Why not put them to good use and create a gorgeous button bouquet? You could stick to a certain colour theme or go all out and incorporate lots of different shapes, sizes and colours. And the beauty of buttons means you can sow them into the bouquet, either individually or as a thread that can be interwoven with beautiful fabric or paper flowers.

Fabric and Paper Flower Bouquets What better way to include ‘something old’ into your wedding than by using vintage materials; perhaps even fabric or lace from your mother’s wedding dress. Choose fabrics to match your bridesmaids’ dresses or dye fabrics in neutral colours for a chic, neutral bouquet. Fabric and paper flowers are beautiful and made well, they look incredibly realistic. Decorate with pearl or diamanté embellisments to add sparkle, style and sophistication.

There is no end to the materials you can cleverly use to create a stunning and totally unique bouquet, including feathers, paper, shells, sweets, fruits, metalwork and wood ... it just takes a little imagination!

Choosing who you will ask to be your bridesmaids isn’t as easy as it sounds and you could find yourself facing something of a dilemma that will test friendships, tear apart families and jeopardise your sanity. On the surface, this seemed all very well and good as the father had two brothers who were chuffed to bits to be asked to be god-fathers to their niece and the mother had two sisters, who were equally delighted. But what both parents had failed to take into consideration was that the mother also had a brother but because she was only selecting the female god-parents, he was not asked to act as god-parent to his niece, the only one of five siblings who was left out in the cold, so to speak!

Your bridesmaids should be sensible, reliable, trustworthy, honest and, dare I say it, normal. It is not wise to pick someone who is so shy and timid that she is going hide behind her bouquet

The best advice I can offer, if you really insist on having bridesmaids, is to choose them wisely, choose them for all the right reasons and choose them because you want them there beside you on the day. We’ve seen some pretty jaw-dropping wedding cakes in our time, but when these amazing images arrived in our inbox, we were absolutely blown away. Sweet Hollywood is a bespoke cake company based in London and founded by creative directors and husband and wife team, Pardeep and Renu Kaur-Gill. Their cakes are created from their shared passion for food, events, fashion and photography, as well as a love for baking, which is captured in every slice. A Taste of the Orient Choosing your honeymoon destination can be difficult as the choice is so vast and varied. The Far East is an idyllic honeymoon heaven with an amazing choice of destinations that will surely please any couple as they make their first trip as husband and wife. It is a fusion of climates, cultures and experiences that combine to offer an exotic and unforgetable honeymoon that will live on in your memory forever. Take a look at three of the many beautiful countries you could include in your Far East honeymoon itinerary.

Thailand Thailand is a country of contrasts. It is a place you simply have to visit for yourself to experience all the wonders it has to offer. From breathtaking beaches to buzzing cities and peaceful villages, you will discover floating markets and patchwork landscapes of rice paddies, glistening temples and exotic nightlife. The best way to enjoy a Thai honeymoon is to combine a city, such as vibrant Bangkok with one of a fabulous array of islands and resorts, so you get the best of both worlds. Let’s start in Bangkok. Without a doubt, Bangkok is one of the most exciting cities in the world; a cultural phenomenon, shopping paradise and tourist hot-spot. It is one of Asia’s most cosmopolitan cities and home to more than 10 million people. In Bangkok you will find dazzling temples, eclectic markets, glossy malls and famous nightlife. At the heart of Bangkok is the Grand Palace, the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) since 1782. Still a working palace today, a visit to Bangkok would not be complete without a visit to this beautiful place. There are many ways to see Bangkok; by public transport, by boat or by way of a frenzied Tuk Tuk ride around the city - just be sure to hold on tight! Bangkok is a 24 hour city and if you haven’t done enough shopping during the day, a trip to a night market is always an option. Patpong Market in the Bang Rak district of the city is popular with tourists. It is vibrant, colourful and loud and it is flanked by nightclubs and bars. It is a fun place to barter for a bargain, as long as you remember this is a market in Bangkok and not everything you see for sale on the stalls will be the ‘genuine’ article. Bangkok has a fabulous selection of good hotels and getting around the city is easy. It’s a wonderful place to start your honeymoon, but after a few days, you might well be ready for something a little more sedate and relaxing! So, a few days on a sun-soaked beach might now be in order and Thailand has an amazing selection to choose from. In the clear waters of the Andaman Sea, you will find the jungle-covered hills, rubber plantations and the paddy fields of Phuket. Here you will also find spectacular scenery, tropical sunsets and magnificent long white beaches. Whilst the resort of Khao Lak boasts stunning waterfalls, crystal blue waters and a calm relaxing atmosphere that epitomises the beauty and tranquility that southern Thailand is famous for. Over on the east coast, Koh Samui has developed from a popular backpacker’s resort to a trendy up-market destination yet it has retained its laid back atmosphere. There are a number of beautiful crescent shaped dazzling white sandy beaches, aquamarine waters, coconut plantations, tiny fishing villages and ornate Buddhist shrines to explore. About an hour’s flight from Bangkok, you will arrive in Krabi, which offers some of the finest beaches in the whole of Asia with its trademark magnificent limestone rock formations towering around and above them. It’s a great choice for watersports enthusiasts and also boasts two national parks, waterfalls, mangrove forests and caves. A ferry ride from either Phuket or Krabi will take you to Phi Phi, a stunningly beautiful hideaway, offering dazzling white beaches and amazing underwater coral formations. Breathtaking rock formations and enticing turquoise waters make Krabi a utopia for beach and watersports lovers and it is the perfect place to wind-down at the end of an amazing honeymoon.

Vietnam

Bali

Vietnam may not be the first country that springs to mind when thinking about your honeymoon, but it is stunningly beautiful and has such a lot to offer. Vietnam is a colourful and diverse land where rugged mountains meet lush forests, dense jungles combine with unspoilt beaches and frenetic bicycle-thronged cities merge with peaceful, rustic villages.

Known as ‘The Isle of Gods’, Bali is the best known of all the Indonesian islands and is the perfect destination for couples seeking a truly relaxing and intimate honeymoon. Bali is a sun-kissed, stylish island, blessed with shimmering, palm-fringed sandy beaches; a seamless blend of welcoming culture, intriguing architecture and stunning natural beauty combining to offer the ultimate in tranquility and pleasure. Luxurious hotels offer exceptional service and great cuisine that will ensure the escape of a lifetime. By contrast from the coastal resorts, in the middle of the island you will find rice fields, like giant steps reaching up to the hilltops, Hindu temples and palaces, winding rivers, tropical rainforests and spectacular volcanic mountain ranges.

The capital, Hanoi, is a fascinating city with the fusion of the oriental east and the colonial west. Its famous Old Quarter - with its 36 street - is the reason why Hanoi attracts such attention. Dating back to the 11th century, the area is rich in history, renowned for its stunning architecture and despite the ravishes of the Vietnam War, the Old Quarter has retained much of its original traits and beauty. Visit the markets for souvenirs and watch artisans at work; enjoy the lakes, parks, wide-tree lined bicycle filled boulevards, elegant French colonial mansions and relax at pavement cafés. A cruise along Halong Bay, one of the world’s natural wonders, is a must whilst in Hanoi. This is arguably the most beautiful tourist destination in Vietnam and the bay features more than a thousand limestone karsts (rock formations) and islands of various sizes and shapes dotted along the 120 km coastline of Bai Chay Beach. You could rent a bicycle and explore the tranquil village life in Vietnam or enjoy a leisurely Sampan cruise through rice fields and karsts before heading up to the Perfume Pagoda, where you will find a vast complex of Buddhist shrines and temples built into the limestone hillsides. The central coast and beaches, which are some of the best in the world, overlook magnificent offshore islands and fascinating coral reefs of the South China Sea.

For the ultimate in honeymoon luxury, choose one of the many the Balinese resorts that offer individual villas with a walled garden, private pool and personal chef to prepare romantic moonlight suppers to enjoy together under the stars. Most resort hotels boast superb spas where you can indulge and pamper yourselve or you can just laze on the white sandy beaches and swim at your leisure in the crystal clear waters.

Vietnam also boasts four UNESCO World Heritage sites - all within driving distance of each other. There is the former Imperial City of Hue, the ancient ‘Silk Road’ trading port of Hoi An, the spiritual centre of the Champa Civilisation, My Son and the mystical Phong Nha Caves in Quang Binh Province. Further down the coast you will come to Nha Trang, the coastal capital of Khanh Hoa where you will find pristine, soft white sandy beaches surrounded by warm turquoise waters filled with an abundance of sea life and the best climate in Vietnam with an estimated 250 days of sunshine a year. From Nha Trang, you can sail, enjoy excellent fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving or explore the surrounding countryside with its lush green paddy fields. Vietnam’s largest metropolis and undisputed commercial capital, Ho Chi Minh City, is in the south. Still widely known as Saigon, it is a city of contrasts where elegant hotels, exclusive restaurants and trendy bars mix with roadside noodle stalls, local markets, pagodas and an endless stream of bicycles and motorbikes. Visit the Cu Chi Tunnels - a sprawling network of underground tunnels stretching over 200km from Ho Chi Minh City all the way to the Cambodian border. Take a trip to Cholon, the city’s Chinatown district and discover its eclectic markets and shops and the Cantonese Thien Hau Pagoda, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea. Round off your trip to Vietnam with a visit to the Mekong Delta where you will experience authentic Vietnamese life amongst lush green rice paddies and waterways. A honeymoon in Vietnam will not disappoint.

Celeb-fave luxury sheepskin boot brand ‘Love From Australia’ launched their fabulous Just Married boots back in 2010 and have been amazed by their success. Originally designed as a limited edition for giveaways and pressies for friends, the Just Married boots have proved so popular that they have now become firmly established as one of the brand’s best sellers. The style is based on the company’s long-running Cupid design and are hand finished in velvet-soft sheepskin with satin ribbons. The celebratory words ‘Just’ and ‘Married’ are embroidered on each heel – a perfect gift for the bride to slip on underneath her wedding dress after a long night dancing or to wear on the honeymoon journey a subtle way of announcing your new status. Do me a favour! Padstow based artisan confectioner, Buttermilk, has launched a range of new, individually packaged treats which would make perfect wedding favours. This family-run business already produces an extensive range of sweets, all lovingly handmade by a team of craft confectioners. Managing Director, Tracy McGoad told Cornish Brides: ‘Our new treat packs are proving extremely popular as wedding favours and gifts for guests at celebrations. They are the ideal sweet to enjoy at the table or to take away and enjoy later’. The company - which was established in 1964 and is now owned by Tracy and her husband, David - underwent a re-brand in Autumn 2015 when packaging for its range of over 60 different flavours of smooth and crumbly fudge was re-designed. To coincide with the update, Buttermilk also launched a number of new products, including chocolate-enrobed honeycomb, chocolate clusters and the chocolatedipped fudge fingers included in the wedding favour range. So, if you have a sweet tooth and like the idea of providing your wedding guests with handmade Cornish favours, check out the new Buttermilk range.
