We all know how important her wedding day is to a bride. But when it comes to planning that perfect day, surely too many cooks can spoil the broth? If you’re not in total control of your wedding planning, the whole process could become too stressful. Cornish Brides best friend Carley Wetting, asks the question ...

How many people does it take to plan a

WEDDING? My Mum always used to say, ‘if you want something doing, do it yourself’. She used to say a lot more than that, to be honest, but to the best of my recollection, that was definitely one of the sayings I heard her say the most while I was growing up. True, it invariably referred to something that we, as children, had been asked to do and made such a pig’s ear of, that she felt it would have been easier, quicker and better to have done it herself in the first place, but I do kind of get her drift on this one - there is a lot to be said for doing things for yourself. So, when it comes to planning a wedding, it never fails to amaze me how many blushing brides-to-be want to enlist the help of a veritable army of people to get the job done. Why? Who knows better than you what you want? By all means talk things over with a few other people, pick your friends’ brains, steal ideas from a couple of acquaintances, even high-jack the odd idea (especially if your wedding is taking place before the person whose original idea it was) but at the end of the day, surely it is best to do things for yourself. Because when all is said and done, everyone has an opinion, everyone has been there, done it, knows someone who has been there and done it and frankly, we’ve all got the t-shirt. If you ask people, they will never tire of telling you how

you should do something or, more to the point, how you should definitely not do something and before you know it, you are inadvertently organising someone else’s wedding or, at the very least, the wedding you are planning bears no resemblance to the wedding you intended to plan and have been dreaming of for years. And therein lies the crux of the matter. You have been dreaming about and planning this wedding for years; you’ve lived it in your mind hundreds of times, you’ve tweaked it here, changed it there, but you do know it backwards, forwards, sidewards and inside-out. So do you really need anyone else to plan it for you? Of course, it could be that you are just uberbusy and simply don’t have the time for all the mundane tasks involved in planning a wedding and if that is the case, then maybe you are happy to hand the reins over to a ‘wedding planner’. On the other hand, you may be absolutely useless at organisation and could not even get your head around planning such a huge event as your wedding. And if you fall into either of those categories, then OK, I will concede that you may need some help if this wedding is ever going to take place. But think carefully before you decide you can’t do this yourself. The length of the average engagement these days seems to be around 16-24 months, which is a huge amount of time to make a few

‘phone calls, look up some stuff on the internet and whizz around a couple of hotels and shops. What do you mean ‘there’s more to it than that’? I knew a couple who were lying in bed reading the Sunday papers and before they’d made it to the supplements, they’d not only decided to get married, but had virtually planned the whole thing - yes, I know the Sunday papers are a hefty read, but even so, that was pretty good going! Then there was my friend who went to Greece for a week with her partner a couple of years ago. By the time they came back, they’d set the date, chosen the venue and written out the guest list - and they hadn’t even been engaged before that holiday. Three months later, we were waving them off on their honeymoon. So you see, it doesn’t have to take long to organise a wonderful wedding. Which brings me nicely around to wedding planners. Who are these people and where did they come from? Ten to fifteen years ago, noone had ever heard of a wedding planner, certainly not unless you were a member of the Royal family or your surname was Rothschild or Trump! Brides planned their own weddings and loved every minute of it. Now, there are wedding planners popping up everywhere offering to organise the wedding of your dreams (or should that be their dreams?) for a fee, of course.

The more experienced of these wedding planners will tell you they have a contact list as long as your arm and that they ‘know everyone who is anyone’ in the wedding industry. But the more important question is do they know you? Maybe they can book the best hotel, the best caterer and the best entertainers, but does that mean they are best for you? Surely half the fun of arranging your wedding is getting out there and meeting the people who you may (or may not as the case may be) entrust to help you with your wedding - not to organise your wedding, but to provide you with the services and products you want for your big day. If you don’t take the whole thing too seriously, then planning your wedding should be an exciting and happy time. A wedding planner takes all the fun out of the equation and you are just left to sign off on their ideas and write out a fairly hefty cheque at the end of it all. Now you may call me cynical - and trust me, I’ve been called a lot worse - but the only experience that a lot of the people who set themselves up as wedding planners have is the fact that they once got married themselves. Many of them seemed to have enjoyed the whole experience so much that they now want to spend their time - and make a career out of organising other bride’s weddings. And, let’s be brutally honest here, when they did arrange their own wedding, they weren’t a wedding planner, so they did not have the contacts they now profess to have and they managed to organise their own wedding - without the help of a wedding planner, so why do they now think that you can’t do the same? And to add to the confusion, most hotels now seem to employ their very own wedding planner or wedding co-ordinator who will also be available to ‘oversee every aspect of your wedding from start to finish’. So, do you really need a wedding planner to liaise with the hotel’s wedding planner and if so, where do you fit into the equation? In reality, a hotel’s wedding planner is a point of contact for you, someone who should be able to ensure that everything you need from the hotel is available as you want it and when you want it. The rest of your wedding is down to you, which brings us back to the army of friends and family who are all ready, willing and mostly able to offer you the benefit of their advice and experience. The problem is, the more people you consult with, the more opinions, ideas and suggestions you will get and the more confused you will become.

You just make a list of all the alternatives you have from chocolate fountains to balloons and chair covers to a string quartet and tick them off. A quick ‘phone call or email will clarify most things or, at most, an hour spent on the internet will provide you with the information you need and you just work your way through your list, regardless of how long or short that list is - the principle is the same and the choice is yours. If you don’t want a chocolate fountain, then cross if off the list or better still, don’t include it on your list in the first place. If a mobile video booth isn’t your thing, no worries - don’t book one. But for goodness sake, don’t let anyone else tell you to book something or worse, book it for you and then present you with a bill for something you didn’t want in the first place. Your wedding should be unique and it should be personal to you and your soon-to-be husband, so it stands to reason that it should be the two of you who decide what you want and then go out and get it. Surely that is the only way to ensure that you are getting the wedding you really want and not want someone else wants you to have, which could be more to their advantage than yours. I realise this can be a stressful time and many brides will want some guidance and support and that’s absolutely fine. The last thing you want to do is alienate those closest to you (especially if they are sharing or shouldering the cost). Of course, you might want to discuss things with your nearest and dearest, but don’t involve too many people. Afterall, part of the joy of being a guest at a wedding is all the surprises and not knowing what is going to happen really does make it all the more special. And from your point of view, seeing the expressions on your invited guests’ faces as things that you’ve organised unfold during the day is special and something you will remember for years to come.

I was reading a story on the internet recently about a bride in Canada who seemed like a regular young woman, but who decided to allow a wedding planner to organise her big day. The reason she gave for this was that she thought (note the word ‘thought’) the wedding planner would know best and would have access to all the things she wanted. They had sat down together and gone through the bride’s wish list at some considerable length. The wedding planner had been thoroughly convincing and left the bride in no doubt that she could source and provide everything on that list because she knew everyone in the bridal industry in this particular city. Unfortunately, things did not turn out that way and with the exception of her dress, which fortunately the bride did choose for herself, pretty much everything else was completely wrong from the flowers, which were neither the colour nor variety the bride had specified to the cake which, again, bore no resemblance to the specifications given by the bride and even the menus had been altered without the bride’s consent and after she had given her approval to the original menus presented to her. In short, her wedding was ruined by one person, but who was really at fault? The opportunist wedding planner or the bride who handed over her entire wedding to someone she barely knew and who certainly did not know her, nor it transpired, cared about her? So, how are you going to play this? Are you going to take the bull by the horns and get down and dirty yourself or are you going to take what you might think is the ‘easy’ option and leave it all to someone else. I guess the one question your need to ask yourself is: how many people does it take to organise a wedding? If the answer is less than an army, then my Mum was probably spot on when she said, if you want something doing, do it yourself!

Don’t allow anyone else to take control of your wedding. Do exactly what suits the two of you best

As far as I can see, there are two basic choices to be made when you decide to get married. You are either going to go all out for an elaborate, expensive celebration to which you are going to invite everyone you have ever met in your entire life - even if it was only in passing - or you are going to opt for an intimate wedding with close family and friends. Once you have made that decision, the rest is easy.

and makes you both happy!
