Planning Your wedding day symbolises so many wonderful things – the union of you and your partner, the coming together of two families, and ultimately the celebration of love. Preparing for your big day, although exciting, can often be demanding. Organising everything – from budgeting to booking your honeymoon – might be a little overwhelming at the beginning.

Whether you’re looking to host a festival-inspired outdoor reception in a marquee, or arrange a sophisticated dinner party in a medieval castle, picking the right venue to fulfil your wedding vision is essential.

The best piece of advice to follow when searching for your wedding venue is to first y decide upon the kind of atmosphere you would like to create. Consider whether you would you prefer to dine in a more formal and glamorous setting, or if you’d rather see your guests kicking off their shoes to dance in a casual, relaxed environment?

Flowers The great thing about selecting flowers or your summer wedding is that most species will be in full bloom for this season, meaning you’re guaranteed to be able to create bouquets to match any colour scheme. When selecting flowers for your summer wedding, it’s important to consider the practicalities demanded of your flower choice - namely, surviving the hotter temperatures of summer days. Garden roses, celosia, thistles and pincushion protea are among some of the species to choose for summer wedding bouquets, as these blooms are able to stand higher temperatures without wilting.

Alternatively, artificial flowers and silk bouquets are a popular option amongst couples opting for a summer wedding.

For an ‘English garden-inspired’ bouquet, try flowers such as roses and lavender, with additions of green foliage to create accents of contrasting colour. As well as looking exceptional, this bouquet should be less prone to wilting in the summer sun. Using dahlias, succulents, or jasmine (a plant well-adjusted to hotter climates) will create an eclectic mix of blooms for an interesting, summer-proof bouquet. Gypsophila, (more commonly known as baby’s breath), is an excellent flowering plant to incorporate into bouquets to add volume and texture.

Sunflowers although an obvious choice for summer wedding posies, are a fun, playful alternative to more traditional blooms. Daisies are another flower species to consider for summer weddings. Add twine or hessian ribbons to tie the flowers together and create a rustic, charming edge to any bouquet.

If you decide to use fresh flowers for your wedding day, request a cold place on-site to store bouquets in before your ceremony – a fridge will do! Keep a spray water bottle to hand during photo shoots, and when the photographer isn’t taking pictures, give your flowers a quick spritz to keep them hydrated and cool. This should keep your flowers looking fresher or longer.

Sourcing flowers from garden centres, florists or specialists local to your chosen wedding venue area is vital. Flowers can therefore be delivered on the day of your wedding, ensuring they are fresh for the hours to follow. Choosing professional artificial flowers suppliers will guarantee your flowers won’t suffer in hot summer conditions, and will remain looking perfect for your whole day. Silk flower experts, or florists can help you to customise bouquets and posies to cater for your style preferences and personal tastes. Centrepieces & Accessories Birdcages make fantastic, unique centrepieces for summer weddings, adding eccentricity to more formal dining settings. Fill birdcages with candles, fairy lights or flowers to add an element of whimsy and magic to your wedding venue. Alternatively, try lanterns as centrepieces (this is particularly suited to wedding receptions taking place outside and in the late-evening). Lanterns can be purchased in a variety of styles and colours to compliment a range of wedding themes, for example vintage or Moroccan pieces are widely available. Candelabras chosen in a material and colour to match your colour scheme act wonderfully as classic centrepieces and add a touch of elegance and drama.

In recent years, less formal weddings have become a popular trend amongst couples wishing to tie the knot in an untraditional way. Quirky accessories such as bunting, pom poms, flower garlands and honeycomb lanterns adorned to walls and ceilings of outdoor tipis or marquees create funky focal points. For lovers of all-things-rustic, bespoke wooden letters, freestanding blackboards and personalised welcome signs are a great way introduce guests to wedding venues.

SILVER - Silver is one of the longest standing precious metals used in making jewellery. It is popular as it is very malleable and one of the most inexpensive precious metals. It is important to note however, that silver will tarnish and scratch more easier than other metals.

TITANIUM - Titanium is an ideal metal due to its properties, it is incredibly strong and durable compared to other metals, such as gold. It is distinguished bi its darker colour and lighter weight. Another fantastic attribute of Titanium is that it is hypo-allergenic making it perfect for those with sensitivities to wearing jewellery.

Glam 60s Vintage up-dos have taken the bridal scene by storm this year! This is a great option for curlyhaired brides, a relaxed up-do style with heaps of class and glamour looks incredible with a silk wedding dress and make hair look ultra shiny. Add a feminine twist with a floral hair accesso y.

The French Twist Understated yet sexy, this Parisian-inspired style is really easy to create and will pull long, flowing locks up and off of your back – perfect if you have a beautiful collared wedding dress to show off.

The Low bun Effortless and elegant, this is a winning wedding hairstyle for fuss-free brides. Experiment with the look of the bun and think about weaving cute clips through the hair or perhaps pulling a side-swept fringe forward to gently frame your face. This style can work well with a subtle patch of netting over the top to create a more stated look.

My favourite Products to help make your Wedding Makeup Last All Day!

2. Low SPF Foundation When choosing a foundation for your big day, try to avoid any products that contain an SPF. Your photographer is likely to be using direct flash photo raphy for indoor shots and the metallic particles in SPF (mainly Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide) can create a white flashback causing your complexion to look ghostly. YSL Touche Eclat Foundation, £32.00 (johnlewis.com) is my favourite foundation to use on brides, as it contains no SPF and is semi-matte with a good coverage, so suits most skin types.

4. W aterproof mascara and eyeliner Weddings are emotional occasions, so teary eyes are highly likely! Stop any makeup mishaps by ensuring you use waterproof eye makeup products – particularly mascara and eyeliner. Eyeko Beach Waterproof Mascara, £19.00 (eyeko.co.uk) creates instantly longer and more volumised lashes. Delilah Gel Eyeliner, £22.00 (delilahcosmetics. com) glides on effortlessly and last all day, even through the tears!

1. Primer After cleansing, toning and moisturising, be sure to apply a good primer. This helps to hold your foundation in place whilst keeping excess oil at bay and also creates an even base to apply your foundation onto. BECCA Ever-Matte Priming Perfector, £28.00 (spacenk.com/uk) is one of my favourite primers to keep skin feeling fl wless.

3. Setting powder Use a quality setting powder to set your base and reapply during the day as necessary, to control any excess oil and shine. Avoid HD powders as they contain silica which also react badly to flash photo raphy. Instead, opt for a setting powder such as Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, £30.00 (cultbeauty.co.uk).

5. Matte Lipstick I find th t matte lipsticks have more staying power and often use a matte lipstick for brides, adding either balm on top for a soft sheen or gloss for a more shiny finish if preferred MAC Matte Lipstick in ‘Mehr’, £17.00 and MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick in ‘Scattered Petals’, £17.50 (both maccosmetics. co.uk) are two of my favourite lipsticks to use on brides.

6. Setting spray Once your makeup look is complete, finish y spritzing a setting spray over your entire face to hold everything in place.

Tip 1 – Give yourself time The longer you give yourself to plan your big day, the better. By leaving yourself enough time to get everything sorted, you will significant y reduce your stress levels throughout the course of your planning schedule. Avoiding last-minute decisions and bookings will benefit you in the intense few weeks before your wedding day.

Tip 2 – Budget, budget, budget It’s all too easy to break a budgeting plan, no matter how much you attempt to stick to it. Early married life can be costly – you and your partner may be moving into your first home together, paying for a honeymoon and buying furniture for your house. By reducing overspending on you wedding as much as possible, you will have more disposable income to enjoy your first year as a couple together. Set realistic budgets for each purchase – if you’re catering for a big wedding party, shop around to find a quality caterer that doesn’t charge extortionate amounts. Be cheeky and try to negotiate prices – it’s likely the figure you are first quoted is not the lowest a company or business is willing to go. Be respectful, but see what discounts and offers are available.

Tip 3 – Be willing to compromise The final touches – whether they are to your outfit décor or flowers – are what will make your wedding unique and give a sense of completion. Candles adorning the chapel aisle, individual place settings personalised with guests’ names, or simply a touch of sparkle to your bouquet, will lift your wedding to new heights.

Tip 4 – Be willing to compromise Completely agreeing upon all decisions is a rarity for most couples – it’s normal to have different tastes, preferences and styles. If you and your partner disagree with regards to a wedding decision, don’t be afraid to compromise. Focus on Fingers Dupuytren’s Disease Put your hands in our hands Do you have bent fingers? Are you constantly poking your eye with your finger or struggling to get your fingers into gloves or pockets?

Dupuytren’s disease is a benign disease of the hand and digit causing your finger to bend down towards the palm. Bereaved mum

publishes letters to her late son

A Warwickshire mum who lost her son to a rare kidney cancer has released a collection of heartfelt letters she penned in the months after his death, in a poignant new book.

Letters To Matthew: Life After Loss was launched last month on what would have marked Matthew Bates’ 30th birthday.

The talented young journalist, who had recently graduated from Brighton University, was diagnosed with Type 2 Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma in 2014, an extremely rare and aggressive tumour that affects only five per cent of kidney cancer sufferers.

But it was more than two years before the severity of the condition became known.

Mum Louise, 60, from Whitnash in Warwickshire, said: “I noticed when he came home from university he used to drink gallons of squash. I thought this isn’t right and he should go and see the doctor but he didn’t really have any other symptoms and, what with one thing and another, it was a couple of years before he actually went.

“He started going to see his local GP about three years later complaining about fatigue, weight loss, back pain and night sweats.

“In the end he went back to the doctors as he was losing weight and had a persistent cough. They final y ran some blood tests which fl gged up something was wrong. He was immediately admitted to hospital where they ran a series of tests and a scan showed a large mass on his kidney.”

“We were in complete shock. The bottom of our world just fell out. But then a survival mechanism kicks in. It still feels unbelievable today that this happened to our family.

“When he was told, the consultant came in and held his hand. I knew this was going to be bad news. But we were given hope. We were told that he could survive with one kidney and an operation to remove it could be the cure.

“When the consultant left the room Matthew was shaking.

You could feel the shock through him. For half an hour we just held each other and we both cried.”

Matt underwent surgery to remove his kidney and there was more positive news when a scan a few weeks later revealed no evidence that the cancer had spread.

“Once his kidney was removed and he was on his new healthy eating plan, you could see him slowly getting stronger and stronger,” Louise said. Then the scan came out clear and we thought, that’s it. It’s over.”

But a further scan brought the news the family had been dreading – the cancer had spread. As everybody tried to come to terms with the news, Matt was accepted on a new trial immunotherapy drug at The Christie Hospital in Manchester, Europe’s largest cancer centre. Unfortunately, his body did not respond to the treatment.

In a second trial, he was put on another targeted drug therapy, Nivolumab.

Louise said: “He responded to that and his soft tissue tumours were shrinking rapidly and some of them had even disappeared. But at that point we didn’t know he also had a tumour on his spine.”

Cannabis oil Desperate to help her son, Louise, who runs a complementary therapy business, managed to source illegal cannabis oil, which, she learned, had showed positive effects for other cancer sufferers.

“I had read an article about a 14-year-old boy who had cancer. He was in a hospice with days to live and his mum started giving his cannabis oil and he started getting better. He got so well he had to leave the hospice and then over time his cancer was cured.

October, 2016 at Warwick Hospital just eight days before he died.

“Matthew took it for three weeks and it helped him sleep and boosted his appetite but he didn’t like how it made him feel. He was worried that if the hospital picked up drugs in his blood they would refuse him treatment so he wanted to come off it. I was always guided by him.”

“He woke up on Bank Holiday Monday August 2016 and said: ‘Mum, my legs feel really wobbly and I can’t pee.’ So he phoned up the Christie’s 24-hour hotline and a five minutes later he had an ambulance outside the door.

They recognised the symptoms of spinal compression from what he’d told them and he was whisked into Warwick Hospital. A scan showed the spinal tumour was getting bigger.

We were just devastated.”

February 2016 on another trip to The Christie hospital in Manchester, for immunotherapy treatment. We were waiting for Matt’s blood tests and we had popped into a local guitar shop.

HEALTH It was at this stage the disease really started to take hold and a subsequent operation on Matt’s spine led to a series of complications which left him paralysed and suffering from a severe infection.

Louise said: “I remember driving home from the hospital after the surgery a few weeks before he died and I am screaming at the top of my voice and banging the steering wheel. I think that was the moment when I final y realised I couldn’t control this. I couldn’t stop it.”

It was to be only two weeks before he returned to hospital after water developed in his lungs.

Louise said: “They took him in and he never came home again.

Excerpts from Letters To Matthew: Life After Loss Dear Matthew, “It’s been four months now since you closed your eyes for the last time. I remember closing them for you.

“But Matthew was so accepting of it all. He was in such a good place. When the doctors said to him 10 days before he died that there was nothing else they could do for him, he was just thanking them for everything they’d done. I thought, how can you be so calm? He was incredible. I don’t know how he did it.

It was the last thing I could do for you as a mother.

Bedside wedding

My thoughts are still consumed with memories of you. I think about you all the time. When I wake up in the morning you are my first thought. I think about you all day and you are the last thought before I go to sleep at night and then I dream about you. A lot of my dreams are about you and Sarah. When I wake up in the middle of the night for a pee I am still thinking about you. I miss you so much.

“On his last night in Myton Hospice we witnessed his bedside wedding to his girlfriend of nine years. The hospice team were amazing. They made a sanctuary and put flowers everywhere. It looked beautiful. It was wonderful to see Matthew’s face. I’m so happy he got his last wish.

“I stayed with him that night. I stayed awake and I held him all night. It turned out to be his last night.”

After 27 years of being A Mum to you, especially the last two years supporting you through the difficult journey, it all ended there, in that moment.

I don’t think I ever want to stop missing you. Life without you is bad enough and what would it be like if I stopped missing you.”

It was very soon after Matt’s death that Louise sought solace penning letters to her son.

“Afterwards I didn’t know what to do with myself and I started journaling as a form of therapy and getting my emotions out of my head.

“One day I was peeling the vegetables and all of a sudden I was surrounded by this energy of Matthew and it was like he was there with me. It was the weirdest feeling, like he was giving me a virtual hug and saying he liked my letters. And I got a picture of a book in my head. It’s as if Matthew was saying this needs to be a book Mum.” In Letters To Matthew: Life After Loss Louise also shares with readers inspirational quotes and insights into her journey of self-discovery’ It also includes heartfelt tributes from Matt’s father Bill, 61, and sister Sarah, 33.

Dear Matthew, “Sometimes when I am writing to you the lamp on the desk flickers and I wonder if it is you trying to contact me, or if it is a sign to reassure me that you are here. I like to think it is an indication that you are with me and that you are reading the letters as I write them.

Are you cringing at my grammar?

Sometimes I genuinely feel you are there next to me. Sometimes I feel you are unreachable, but in those moments, I like to think that you are hanging out with someone else, comforting them, or maybe just enjoying the afterlife party!!”

Dear Matthew, “Your cricket bat is still in the same place in the dining room. I visualise you occasionally picking it up and practising your swing just like you used to do. We’ll never be able to move it. It’s part of the furniture now.

I’m still finding golf balls in the most unusual places and I’m sure you’re playing games with me.

It’s strange we never have any sport on the telly any more unless it’s rugby. I was just getting into cricket too. Your Dad says sport isn’t the same any more.”

Film Lecturer

switches focus

to dream business

FORMER film lecturer and TV cameraman Daniel Beckett is completely rewriting the script for an exciting new sequel to his life story.

Daniel, from Kineton, is closing the door on the classroom after 11 years teaching Film and Television at Warwickshire College, to launch his new business – as a gin distiller.

And Warwickshire drinkers are quickly acquiring a taste for his hand-crafted Pinnock Dry Gin which has already earned awards and is stocked in more than 35 outlets throughout the county – including a Michelin-starred restaurant.

But it’s been a meticulous route to reinvention for Daniel who admits the professional transition has been a long time coming.

“After university, it was always my ambition to write and direct an independent feature film I also got into TV and worked on Hollyoaks in the camera department,” he said.

“I began teaching film at my old college, which was fulfilling for a long time, but with greater pressures across the teaching sector, it made me realise that now was as good a time as any to start thinking about doing something else, such as setting up a business.

“I wanted to do something creative as well as have more or less full autonomy over what goes on and how the whole business runs. With the many skills I’d gained from TV and teaching, I wanted to create something that I could realistically make a career out of. I love the fact that I’m seeing the whole process through from beginning to end.”

And, he recalls, it was his association with the TV industry that led him down this new path.’

“My wife is a producer in television and about five years ago she was talking to one of the actresses on the set of the BBC show Doctors about how she and I were trying to get into shape for our wedding. She was advised we should start drinking gin and slimline tonic as an alternative alcoholic drink. I quickly got a taste for G&Ts. Then over time we started to build more of an appreciation for the craft element of it as well.”

“I suppose the eureka moment came when I read an article in The Guardian in 2017 about small-batch distillers and the fact you could actually make gin on a small scale again now.

For the next year the entrepreneur had been busy researching the industry he knew nothing about and, after successfully applying for all the necessary licences, today proudly produces 20cl, as well as the 50cl of Pinnock Gin from a 40-litre copper still in his small cottage kitchen which has been transformed into a pint-sized distillery and bottling plant.

“It’s literally, a industry!” he said.

Originally from Leamington and now living in Kineton, Daniel, 38, was keen to celebrate his Warwickshire roots by being able to demonstrate a strong local provenance for his product.

The 11 botanicals used in Pinnock Warwickshire Dry gin include Cotswold Lavender from Snowshill, near Broadway, quince from Alscot Park near Stratford and honey from Red Road Nursery pick your own farm in Little Kineton.

Daniel said: “Quince was an obvious choice as we are in such an historical part of the country.

Quince was regarded as the fruit of love by William Shakespeare and in the Tudor period it was one of the main ingredients in a lot of the food. It also adds a unique fruitiness to the gin.

The honey adds a hint of sweetness.”

“I was quite keen to keep things as traditional as possible and use a recipe from around that period. I found a recipe book that had been republished from 1636 - so based all my botanicals from that period as well.”

He added: “The history of the area plays a big part in the branding too. We are close to the scene of the first pitched battle of the Civil War in 1642 and when I was doing my research I discovered Charles I was actually the first monarch to bring in taxation on alcohol in the 1630s when many people were distilling in their kitchens.”

In a nod to those historical links, it’s fitting then that the first business to stock Pinnock was The Castle in Edgehill.

Daniel said: “It’s very much in line with our branding. They’re very proud of it there.”

Pinnock – which Daniel says is best described as a ‘smooth gin,’ has also earned pride of place on the drinks menu at, among others, The RSC Rooftop Restaurant in Stratford, Mallory Court Hotel in Leamington and the Michelin-Starred The Cross in Kenilworth.

IMMERSE YOUR SENSES WITH MARIBEL’S DINING IN THE DARK EXPRENCE Brindleyplace-based restaurant Maribel has teamed up with national charity, Sense to host an exclusive ‘Dining in the Dark’ event for one night only. The first event of its kind in the city will be a dining experience like no other, taking guests on a journey to awaken their senses. Taking place on Friday 27 September, diners will be blindfolded as they go on a culinary adventure through three-courses designed to tantalize the tastebuds.

And it’s already caught the attention of the connoisseurs, winning three awards - a Silver Medal in the ‘Contemporary Styles’ gin category and a Silver Medal in the ‘Gin & Double Dutch Tonic’ competition with the IWSC (International Wine and Spirits Competition) as well as a Great Taste award with The Guild of Fine Food.

Joining forces with Sense, an organisation dedicated to supporting the deafblind community and those living with complex disabilities, the restaurant has worked with the charity to craft a special menu, focusing on texture, smell and sounds. These senses will all be heightened throughout the meal as guests will eat each course blindfolded.

Daniel said: “I knew it was a good product, but we are a tiny producer, only producing a few thousand bottles a year, so to be getting international award recognition in our first year is a great boost.”

This unique culinary experience will encourage guests to explore their senses, without the usual visionary cues, totally changing the way they interpret taste. Sighted guides will be on hand to assist and will encouraged guests to use their imagination to discuss what they taste, smell and hear.

But settling on those winning botanicals and fl vour combinations was a process which could not be rushed. In fact it took six months to finesse “As a self-taught distiller, I’d made about 30 gins before I found the one I liked, including some pretty lousy ones! There were a couple of rules I set myself from the outset. As well as containing at least three-local botanicals, I wanted it to be a sippable gin, something you could drink neat. In my opinion if you can drink something and enjoy it on its own then it’s a good gin.”

Pinnock Distillery is now becoming a more familiar brand in the area and feedback from customers to his stall on festival days is so far positive. So does the entrepreneur yet dare to dream big?

“Soon I’ll be exploring wider export opportunities and potentially expanding operations into larger premises, as demand continues to grow.”

“Further down the line, I would eventually also like to offer the visitor experience which is becoming a popular thing to do.”

As for the short-term future, there’s hushed talk of a new product in the testing stages – “We’re looking at developing some fruit gins, which are very popular. I want to develop a new recipe with our local fruit suppliers, which we’ll be releasing very soon!” www.pinnockdistillery.com

Sense supports thousands of people across the region suffering with visual impairment, through personalised support through their centres, holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes.

Food festival

will be a feast of fl voursome fun

Food lovers are in for a tasty treat at this year’s Stratford’s Town Centre Food Festival where a new car is just one of the things on the menu.

The Town Centre Food Festival, organised by Stratforward Business Improvement District (BID) and sponsored by Loxleys Restaurant and Wine Bar, returns on 21 and 22 September and features a veritable feast of culinary delights on High Street, Henley Street and Bridge Street.

There’s plenty to get your teeth into from learning top tips at the demo theatre to sampling the live music around town; browsing the bustling 120-stall food market; getting hands-on at the free workshops in Bell Court; or exploring the town’s restaurants, cafes and pubs on the Food & Ale Trails.

There’s even the chance to win a brand new Citroen for a year, as part of a raffle being held in aid of local children’s charity Molly Olly’s Wishes, courtesy of the festival’s sponsor Loxleys which has donated the impressive prize.

The Win a Car raffle will be one of the highlights of this year’s event, which champions local food and drink in Stratford-upon-Avon.

This year the cookery demo theatre, which entertains and educates with free cookery and drinks demonstrations, will be held at Bridge Street in an effort to reduce road closure disruption.

The ‘farm to fork’ demonstration will see Loxleys’ chefs take food lovers on a journey of one of the restaurant’s much-loved dishes.

The demonstration will team the chefs with Adam Lucock from local business Barry the Butcher, who supplies Loxleys, as well as the local famer who supplies him. Free workshops include a kids’ pizza master class and wine tasting.

The Taste Trails will once again provide festival-goers with the opportunity to sample some of Stratford’s finest eateries for just £5, at venues such as Carluccio’s, El Greco, Veeno and many more. Vote for your favourite Taste Trail experience and you could win a meal for two.

Loxleys will be selling tickets for the raffle from the Sheep Street restaurant in the run-up to the festival as well as at the event itself, when the car will be parked by its stand on Bridge Street, giving people the chance to see it for themselves.

opens its new coffee shop

Speciality coffee roaster 200 Degrees has opened a second coffee shop in central Birmingham today (Tuesday 20 August), offering handcrafted coffee and delicious food to the bustling area surrounding Birmingham New Street station.

The opening of the new 65-seater coffee shop situated on Lower Temple Street, follows the success of its coffee shop and barista school on Colmore Row which opened in the heart of the business district in 2016.

The new shop will bring 20 new jobs to Birmingham city and the highly trained barista team will be serving freshly roasted coffee from the 200 Degrees roast house in Nottingham, as well as iced tea, smoothies and milkshakes.

The shop will also be serving 200 Degrees’ renowned deli style sandwiches, baguettes and an imaginative range of salads, soups, cakes and pastries - with plenty of vegan and gluten free options, all prepared daily on the premises, available to eat in or takeaway.

Located in the Victorian setting of the former Midland Hotel, the new 1,830 sq. ft shop retains many of its original period features, blending heritage and history with a relaxed, contemporary interior decor that will be familiar to many. It will also feature an innovative split bar area for rapid and convenient takeaway service.

The new Lower Temple Street venue is the company’s tenth coffee shop to open since 2014 and coffee enthusiasts can purchase freshly roasted beans in shops and online, as well as coffee machines and equipment to enjoy 200 Degrees’ distinctive beans at home.

200 Degrees now supplies coffee to more than a hundred wholesale customers across the UK, as well as providing bespoke ‘beans to machines’ solutions for numerous offices restaurants, cafés, hotels, conference centres and shops.

Takes City To New High

With The Greatest Show Birmingham’s most iconic restaurant held its first ever immersive dining experience when The Greatest Show took over the whole venue to wow guests in two sold out performances. Taking place at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill on Level 25, the all-singing-all-dancing themed dinner saw both families and party goers roll-up for an event like no other.

Level25 was transformed into a big top complete with secret garden and fun fair which saw guests totally immersed into a magical, fantastical world. Greeted by a twisted black and white hypnotic circus the magic continued as guests became part of a technicolour explosion carnival fairground, before entering the big top where the sold-out shows took centre stage in the 250-cover restaurant.

As guests settled in their seats and enjoyed a menu of ‘carnival classics’, The Greatest Show began on a 60-foot stage spanning the length of the restaurant. Welcomed by BBC’s ‘Search for Dorothy’ Tasheka Coe and one of the West End’s elite, Owain Williams, guests were treated to exclusive performances whilst they dined. The stars were joined by some of the Birmingham’s best performers as well as Level25 ‘Search for the Stars’ competition winners, Georgina Mason, Olivia Moore, Alice Boundy and Roisin Murphy.

Oh, what a circus!

Birmingham Hippodrome welcomes the big top this autumn when the circus comes to town.

The international phenomenon Circus 1903 brings a host of amazing acts, daredevil feats, high wire stunts and life-size animal puppets as it takes audiences back to the golden age of the travelling show.

The extravaganza, which comes to Birmingham for the first time, is a perfect centrepiece for the Hippodrome’s 120th birthday celebrations because the theatre was launched as a circus venue back in 1899.

And Circus 1903 associate director Richard Peakman, who grew up in Kinver and knows the Hippodrome well, is delighted the production will take centre stage during this anniversary year.

“It would have felt special to bring this show to the Hippodrome last year or next year but actually this year is extra-special because of the Hippodrome’s birthday,” he says. “It’s amazing that we are bringing a golden age circus show to the Hippodrome which is celebrating its own anniversary.

“It’s like we’re recreating history with the sights, the sounds and the spectacle that launched the Hippodrome all those years ago and bringing them back. Now we’re paying homage to that golden age with our show in 2019. As a local lad, to bring a show which has toured the world back to the Hippodrome at this very special time makes me feel very honoured and very lucky.”

Richard became part of the creative team behind Circus 1903 at its very beginning, working with director Neil Dorward who he had first known when they were students together at the Italia Conti Academy in London. The two had built up successful careers in theatre before collaborating on a circus show in China.

Then Neil had the idea for Circus 1903 - and he and the team had a clear vision for the show.

“We were really keen to transport audiences back to the golden age of circus when the circus was the biggest attraction of its time,” Richard explains. “There was no TV, no cinema, no theatres, no sports games – circus was a combination of all those elements. We wanted to capture that bygone era.

“So we deliberately shied away from anything which would be too futuristic. We wanted to take it back to basics and for our audience to have an appreciation for these amazing circus acts. There are no gimmicks, no special effects, no filter – what you are seeing is the trapeze artist balancing on that high wire or the juggler spinning those clubs. You are watching a lifetime of dedication packed into an act of a few minutes.

“And we wanted to ensure it was lavish. Money was so tight in the 1900s and yet circus costumes and sets were so extravagant and flamboyant - we really wanted to capture that with exquisite costume design and sumptuous sets.”

Recreating that age of the big top meant looking for a new way of incorporating animal performers.

“We wanted to feature something which was so synonymous with turn-of-the-century circus but obviously these days we wouldn’t use real elephants,” says Richard. “It was the brainchild of our creative producer Simon Painter to incorporate puppetry to bring animals back to the circus. Simon had seen War Horse, which is on everyone’s radar for just how breath-taking the puppets are, and he said we should have the best. And so they created two elephants for us – a mother and baby.”

When it came to choosing the acts, the team again wanted to ensure they were authentic to that early age of the circus.

ENTERTAINMENT “We did a lot of research,” says Richard. “I bought this humongous hardback book which documented circus from its early origins right up to now. We were really keen, where possible, to have acts whose very early origins were present in the circus circuit at the turn of the century.

“We have a booker who literally trawled the world and came back with a collection of the weird and the wonderful and then we had lots of films submitted by performers and we went through those looking for the most breath-taking acts.”

GREGORY PORTER ANNOUNCES THIRTEEN DATE UK TOUR MAY 2020

Some of those acrobats, trapeze and high wire artists, contortionists, jugglers and a larger-thanlife ringmaster have remained with the show since it was premiered in 2016 but the team are also always on the look-out for new talent.

“We are a period piece but we also need to evolve within those parameters to ensure we are fresh, exciting and current and have something new to offer audiences,” explains Richard.

The show’s name pays homage to the age of the historic Barnum and Bailey circus company which launched the extravaganza known as The Greatest Show on Earth. This is the same P T Barnum brought to life by Hugh Jackman in the cinema blockbuster The Greatest Showman.

Although Circus 1903 pre-dates Jackman’s film Richard says the movie’s popularity has helped re-ignite interest in the golden age of circus.

Richard’s career has seen him performing, choreographing, creating and directing a host of shows across the world and also in the West Midlands. Working for Qdos Pantomimes, he choreographed Cinderella with Julian Clary at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre in 2014 and he has been on stage at the Hippodrome in shows such as Fame and Oh! What a Night – but this is the first time he’ll h ve been in Birmingham as part of the creative team.

“I am so excited to be bringing Circus 1903 to the Hippodrome,” he says. “It’s such a beautiful theatre and I’ve always loved having the opportunity to come back home. My career is predominantly in London these days but my heart is definite y still in the West Midlands.

“My family will all be out in force to see the show and I’m also so excited because I’ll have the opportunity to bring my nieces Evie, who is five and Sophie, who is two. It’s the first time they will have seen a circus and I can’t wait to see their faces.”

And Richard is confident th t his nieces won’t be the only ones amazed at what they see.

“I hope that people go away with the biggest smiles on their faces having been thoroughly entertained and mind-boggled with what they’ve just seen. There’s something in it for everyone because of the plethora of acts – there’s humour but also spectacle. We set out to entertain people – just as circus did back in the day.”

Circus 1903 comes to Birmingham Hippodrome on October 25 – November 2.

Award winning soap actor ‘Ned Porteous’ tackles new Escape Rooms at Hatton Country World!

After a strong start with the opening of the brand-new Escape Rooms at Hatton Country World, near Warwick, soap actor best known for his role as JOE TATE in EMMERDALE Ned Porteous headed down to see what the fuss was about.

Willing to tackle both the new rooms (Piratethemed challenge, ‘Mutiny’, and The Outfitters set in the Great Depression) he geared up and headed in with a few palls. Pictured playing about and solving puzzles, Ned managed to escape both the rooms in record-breaking time.

Ned said ‘I’ve never tried an escape room before, and boy I’m glad I did. It’s a different experience to what I expected. The teaming made it for me.

It’s like a real-life experience from start to finish and puts you in a world of pure concentration.

I genuinely felt nervous that I wasn’t going to make it out on time. Great fun for anyone who’s up for a challenge’ After escaping, Ned took part in a fun photo shoot modelling the new attraction where he was seen pouring pints in Outfitters and cracking codes in Mutiny. In addition to this Ned took a chill in the licensed Bar outside the rooms where he enjoyed a beer or two.

Hatton Escape Rooms A Great Experience So, escape rooms are this interesting concept that just popped up over the last decade or so. The idea being that you and friends can be locked into a room or a collection of spaces and are told to try and escape. It’s very much a team building exercise, and one that encourages all different types of thinking, so I took some friends and we give it a go.

The escape room that we chose was a pirate themed one. So, as you can imagine, the whole place was decorated in a swashbuckling theme, with a lot of good props and decor. Understandably, I had quite a nice time.

The important thing to remember with escape rooms is that the focus is really on working together with your teammates, and problem-solving. You have to be able to get on with people in pressure situations, because otherwise you’re not going to be able to cooperate long enough to work out a solution. So it really does depend a lot on who you bring with you, but I was lucky enough to take some incredible friends.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect going in, because you never know with places like this. But I really was pleasantly surprised when the getting really got going. That wasn’t just one room by any means, there were multiple rooms and they all had a different set of puzzles and challenges in them, with difficulties that were reasonable for the situation, but still rewarding enough if you completed them.

Of course, the staff really helped to tie the experience together, being incredibly polite and easy to get along with. Special thanks to Jacob, who was an absolute delight and really helped to make the experience a great one.

We can’t really recommend the place enough to people. It was my first experience with escape rooms, but it definite y will not be my last. It was so much fun. It was very sort of Crystal Maze in its design and the way the puzzles behaved, so fans of that show will really enjoy escape experiences like this.

So what actually think about escape rooms? Personally, I think I fantastic. I completed Mutiny alongside my friends with eight minutes to spare, which isn’t bad considering it was our first time working in that kind of team dynamic. The whole concept is fascinating really. You take a bunch of friends or strangers, lock them in a room and have them escape a facility or a complex together. There are a lot of incredible puzzles and it really feels like an adventure, which is exactly what you want. Something that I particularly enjoyed was just the atmosphere that started to develop. Once we moved past the initial sort of joking, bantering vibe, and people realised that we’d actually have to employ our brains a little bit to get out of this, the atmosphere became very relaxed. We didn’t argue or bicker, and people seemed open to listen to new ideas. There was a very sort of subtle understanding that there were no wrong suggestions, and instead that if we wanted to get out of the room in the best time possible, we had to be willing to embrace new ideas and concepts.

And that to me, was worth the price of admission. I feel like I’ve grown closer to my friends as a result of all of this, and I can’t thank the team who helped put it together enough for that.

MAMA MEET & MARKET COMES TO THE CUSTARD FACTORY The Market Will Have Over 80 Stalls A fun and stylish parenting event is heading to Digbeth on September 22nd.

Mama Meet & Market, which was created in 2017 by Birmingham mummy blogger Ainsley Gray, will showcase over 80 different stalls in a bid to introduce local brands and services to parents living in the area.

Ainsley started running Mama Meet and Markets in 2017 as a way of supporting small kitchen table businesses and bringing local parents together. Her markets have since flourished with people travelling across the country to attend the family-oriented events.

Held up to three times a year, the event showcases up to 100 exhibitors specialising in children’s and family products and will be held at Factory Works in The Custard Factory. The event is also designed around families needs, offering plenty of food vendors, live music, children’s entertainment and changing and feeding facilities.

Products on offer vary from cuddly toys, to changing bags, to many items which can be personalised, such as pictures, plaques and journals and parents can also take advantage of free children’s first aid demonstrations, face painting, VIP goody bags and mini photography sessions.

Ainsley Gray says, “My events have grown into an incredible little community and have seen hundreds of exhibitors and welcomed thousands of guests from across the UK. After deciding to leave my job as a visual merchandiser in fashion retail, I have set my sights on hosting more events than ever before in and around the Midlands.

There are plenty of clothes and shoes you won’t see on the Highstreet and the unusual gifts on offer will give parents a great chance to get ahead with their Christmas shopping! “

JAMES EVANS MEMORIES OF A TOUCHWOOD PRODUCT CONSULTANT I worked at Touchwood for almost 5 years, my role was to make customers aware of the services Hilarys blinds provide. On arriving at the stand visitors could view a selection of blinds, curtains and shutters. If the client choose to purchase, I would arrange for one of our advisers to visit the property. The adviser would then measure the window and provide a quotation, A further visit would the be undertaken to install the product.

I guess sales has always been in my blood, after completing my education I was eager to prove myself in the work place. In 2005 I became a sales assistant for Currys. I was based in the Bullring and enjoyed meeting people from all sections of society.

People skills are very important. I always tried to be honest with a customer, I want to create a favourable impression and build up a rapport, so a good sense of humour comes in handy. It also helps if you know what you are talking about. Do your homework because the public are no fools, product knowledge is essential.

Like most things in life a balance is required.

Healthy sales figures are always a prime consideration, but I am dealing with human beings. The desire to make a quick quid does not motivate me.

I really enjoyed working at Touchwood.

Other stand holders would make mention of my love of coffee. I guess the fact that I often had a cup in my hand created the impression. One Christmas I was in festive mood and offered to get my fellow workers a hot drink, however my Good Samaritan act rebounded spectacularly. With Christmas approaching more stands had been attracted to the mall, of course most them were more then happy to place an order. Carrying 8 cups of coffee is beyond my limitation, luckily a friendly barista offered to lend a hand, Ask Evans’ only applies from January 2nd.

But all good things come to an end. I have always wanted to start my own business.

The new venture will provide water distillers throughout the UK Contrary to popular wisdom tap water is not 100% clean. I began using a distiller a year ago and my skin feels a lot cleaner. I hope my company will promote healthy living and reduce the use of plastics.

Lisa Stansfiel Why have you decided to do this tour?

What about Affection has made you want to come back and do it again?

I think it feels right at the time we are in now because that sort of music has come full circle, RnB and soul music has come around again and this album just makes complete sense in the current climate we’re in. We thought about doing it after 25 years and it just felt really relevant because of the way music is now.

it and more – it’s what every musician really wants, and that moment is the most beautiful moment. That’s your special moment because the most frightening part after that (laughs) is to play it to everyone else!

That’s one of the most special moments for me, just sitting in a room, listening to your work and thinking I’ve done my job and I would go out and buy that record.

When you listen to it now how do you feel about it? Do you still get that buzz and excitement?

Yes! Because we don’t really listen to our own music. The Deeper album, I’m not currently listening to it now because it’s out there for everyone else. So to revisit an album is really nice because it triggers a lot of memories and feelings. It’s quite lovely really to have left it for a while before listening to it, because it was like listening to the greatest hits when we listened to Affection again really.

What are you memories of recording it?

What stands out for you?

It was one of those things that was a magical sort of thing, because every time we did anything, there was such a spirit to it. It was a very hungry album and we weren’t hungry for money, we really wanted this album to be a success and we wanted this album to be out there. So what stands out for me is the spirit, drive and hunger that’s in the album, it’s unbelievable.

Does Deeper add a new context to the record? You wrote all of the songs on both tracks with your partner Ian and Deeper is a love letter to him really.

Well we would have recorded maybe little bits of some of the affection album, because we were together through all of it. But now it’s Deeper and the music has become like that too. So if you listen to the content of the songs they’re different in a way. It’s the love thing – it’s different. It’s a different kind of love and it’s more profound and I suppose songs get like that as you get older because you experience more.

What did you hope it would achieve?

Like any artist you hope to reach other people through your music, and this is fundamentally, [as an artist] what I want to do more than anything. I don’t want to look pretty and I don’t want all the fame, that’s just a by-product of it. I always wanted to be successful because of my music and it was ultimately a dream come true and then more on top of that! Because we just didn’t realise how much of an effect this album would have on the whole world.

Do you look back on the songs on Affection and do they mean something different to you from when you first recorded them Yes but they also make you look at your life again differently, because you can see your life through the eyes that you had when you wrote those songs initially. So you can remember your outlook on life when you wrote those songs, you think “oh I don’t think like that anymore or I’m still like that.” You sort of look at your life through your songs!

Once it was finished did you know that this was a great album?

Yes! We sat back and listened to it as a whole piece of art and a whole piece of music and we just said “this is fucking amazing; this is fucking great”. To sit in a room and listen to what you’ve produced, made and what has come out of your own head - for it to sound the way you want

How will you be choosing which songs from Affection?

No idea! (laughs) Because everyone has a favourite I think it’s going to have to be a general consensus from whoever is there at the time.

We’re not going to play the whole album from start to finish because there are songs from other albums which people might think were on

Affection, but weren’t. We’re going to do a big chunk of it and it’ll be exciting doing it again. I’m looking forward to rehearsals.

In the 30 years since the release of Affection what’s been your proudest moment.

I think really at the moment is my proudest moment because I’ve sorted and taken stock on a lot of things I’ve done throughout my career.

This pinpointing, making note of the 30 years you reflect and I’m very proud that I’ve done all the things I have, and I’m very very happy.

Is there anything you would have done differently? Any regrets?

Not really – I don’t think so. I think everything has followed its course and I feel very privileged to have done all those things and I don’t want to have wished it any different. It was special just the way it was.

Is there still something you’re hungry to achieve now?

I’d like to do more touring! I’ve got to like touring much more than I used to do. I really like it now because I don’t think that I worry quite so much about everything, so I take it easier on tour and don’t let things get to me like the travel. So more touring and I’d like to do more acting as well.

It’s just exploring parts of yourself and other peoples lovely writing and work – to be able to say someone else’s words and make them real is lovely.

Anything in the pipeline?

Just dreaming on the acting front but in the New Year we’re going to get stuck into more music, so we’re just going to be in the studio I think for a good few months.

What’s next for you? Deeper had such a good reception!

Yes it did! We’re just going to try and give everyone a bit more of the same really! And keep throwing things at the wall and seeing if anything sticks. It’s great!

Grease the Musical Had Us a Blast!

If you grew up in the same sort of time that I did, then you probably had some exposure to a film called Grease. Like all musicals of the time, it was loud, zany and full of memorable moments.

So when there was a musical recreation at the Birmingham Hippodrome, I thought that it could be a good laugh. Little did I know that I would be enjoying the event a lot, and would come away with my appreciation for Grease at an all-time high.

So, for anyone who thinks I’m talking about the stuff you find in ovens, Grease is the story of two young people who have a summer romance, and go home never expecting to see the other again…

Until the very prim and proper Sandy transfers into the high school of greaser Danny. From there, it becomes an incredible journey of love, self-discovery and eventually when to grow up.

I had a wonderful time. Musicals tend to be a little hit or miss, to be honest. But this was spectacular.

It was fun, dynamic and great to sing along to. It was one of those musicals where you can clearly see the chemistry between the two leads. The very talented cast and crew had spent a lot of time rehearsing and trying to get things right.

Every character is clearly identifi ble, and all the songs are performed with exceptional enthusiasm, with audience participation heavily encouraged. More than once I found myself singing the lyrics to Grease Lighting, which was an incredibly entertaining concept at my age.

An interesting thing to note about the performance is that it features a special guest appearance by Peter Andre. He played the angel character, who I won’t spoil for you, but just know that he was incredible from start to finish and I was very lucky to have gone on one of the nights when he was making an appearance. His betrayal of his character was enthusiastic and bombastic, and it’s clear that he still has all of the charisma that served him so well in the past.

So what did I think about this musical? Well, it was really good. I know that some people don’t put a lot of stock into musicals, because they do have a tendency to become quite dramatic, and transferring the film adaptation to the stage sometimes loses some of the magic.

This was not the case here. It was so much fun to be part of, and I really enjoyed every minute of it. It was one of those unique instances where I wanted to go back and watch the source material. I spent the next evening hunting for the film version of Greece to take a look at because it just brought back so many happy memories. All of the cast are incredible, there was such a great energy in the performance that you couldn’t help but join in. It was really mesmerising to watch these incredible actors give it their all, and really weave together their own take on what is a classic film now. The shoes of people like Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta are really big to fill but these young actors did a fantastic job.

New Ssangyong Korando

SsangYong’s Korando has undergone a metamorphosis since it first emerged in 1983.

It was born as nothing more than a Jeep CJ-7, but it was 1996’s Korando that got things going. It was an oddly attractive, curvaceous off-roading machine. Then, the third-generation model followed the SUV trend, helping to boost the brand’s popularity. And it’s the SUV formula that the South Korean marque has retained for the all-new Korando.

The recipe may be similar, but believe me, this is an entirely fresh car with new tech and mechanicals, as well as a different platform. It looks good, too; it has slicker lines, even though it’s the same height as the exiting Korando – and it’s only 40mm longer.

Inside, it’s a similar story. The cabin is far sexier than before, perhaps even better than the benchmark Nissan Qashqai’s. Sure, there are still some hard plastics here and there, but the switchgear makes up for it by feeling solid and durable.

The SsangYong also houses a lot of decent technology. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto feature and you get digital instruments on the top models instead of analogue ones. The Korando also provides different graphic displays that show infotainment, navigation and driving information in a multiplicity of ways.

Rear seat occupants get loads of head and legroom, and the boot is a good size. That said; my test vehicle was furnished with a spare wheel under the load floo , which is great if you like getting your hands dirty sorting your puncture out, but it cuts into the cargo capacity somewhat.

The Korando enters the UK with a sole engine: a 1.6-litre diesel producing 136ps. But don’t worry, if you’re a diesel hater, a 1.5-litre petrol unit will kick in at the end of the year. And, perhaps more interestingly, an electric Korando EV will be ushered in by the end of next year!

Behind the wheel, the oil-burner sounds a tad agricultural. It’s worse at start-up, rattling like an old taxi.

Fortunately, the clatter does calm down a bit once the engine warms up. It’s not fast, either. It’ll get you to 62mph from a standing start in 12 seconds. The steering is a little woolly, too, but ride comfort is generally reasonable. Furthermore, the delivery of power is smooth, helped by the competent six-speed automatic transmission.

At this moment in time, there are just a couple of trim levels to select. The Pioneer, tested here, is fitted with either two or four-wheel drive. It’s well-appointed inside with heated front seats and an eight-inch infotainment display. Outside, you get 17-inch alloy wheels which come with all-weather tyres. Then there’s the Ultimate model, which I also tried. This comes with leather seating, the earlier-mentioned digital instrument cluster and flashier 19-inch alloys Oh, it gets LED lights, too.

And the best bit? Every Korando is sold with a seven-year warranty. Peace of mind, or what?

Rocket fuelled half term fun at the British Motor Museum!

The British Motor Museum will be encouraging children of all ages to visit and enjoy plenty of rocket fuelled fun during the October half term from 26 October – 3 November!

Recycled Rockets will enable children to make their own rocket out of recycled materials, whether it be a rocket car, a river rocket or a space rocket. Families can join the Rocket Powered family tour every day at 1.30pm when the costumed guides will explore the concept of ‘power’.

Rocket K’nex Cars will run from Monday to Friday. Children can design and build their own Rocket K’nex Car and see how far it travels from the pneumatic rocket launch. The activity is delivered by the STEM ambassadors from MOD Kineton. Blast off colouring also enables children to choose their favourite car or rocket picture, colour it in and watch it come to life with the Quiver App. The popular Halloween Black Cat Trail returns every day where children can search the Museum for the black cats and with their torch discover the colour of each cats eyes! Simply pick up a trail sheet from the Family Activity Station and return for a ‘spooky’ treat!

Rocket fuelled Family Science Shows will take place on Thursday 31 October at 11am, 1pm and 2pm. ‘Professor Pickle’ and ‘Doctor Pumpkin’ return for some Rocket fuelled fun in a 25 minute spooky spectacular full of cool interactive demonstrations and rocket inspired science.

Rally Round Launches 2020 – 2022 Calendar of Driving Adventures INCLUDING MONGOLIA, ETHIOPIA AND ‘WILD’ ALASKA Rally Round has launched its calendar of epic adventures for 2020 through to 2022, which includes three brand new rallies that journey to Mongolia, Ethiopia and the wilds of Alaska.

Rally Director Liz Wenman said: “The success of the Trans-Himalayan Adventure shows the sort of experience that these explorers are looking for in their cars. The year ends with another brand-new event and a first for any international rally organiser as Rally Round heads to the incredible vastness and changing landscape of ancient Ethiopia.

Unexplored by many westerners, this is a unique rally across a stunning country of which most people only know from the horrific images of poverty historically shown to the world. Recently visited by the new Top Gear presenters in their new series opener, the route will not be for the faint hearted and like the Trans-Himalayan Adventure, will see enough competition in the terrain, elements and altitude.

In 2022, Rally Round will return to Japan for the second Samurai Challenge, having previously visited in 2017. Visiting in the spring when the famous cherry blossom will be in full bloom, this competitive rally also takes in the beautiful Japanese culture as well as a fantastic route through this interesting country.

In the autumn of that year, Rally Round will hold its third new epic adventure – Wild Alaska. Moving away from the more tourist areas, the route will explore the depths of Alaska and the Yukon. As well a route taking advantage of undiscovered roads, there will also be time for taking in the wildlife of this breath-taking region.

The rest of the Rally Round calendar will include a series of shorter events designed to encourage newcomers to the endurance rally scene along with dedicated training events held worldwide.

The showpiece event of the rugby calendar is fast approaching, with the action getting started on the 20th September in Japan. The reigning champions are New Zealand, but there are plenty of challengers vying for their crown.

The All Blacks are undoubtedly the team to beat after winning the competition in 2015 to regain the crown that they won in 2011.

However, the Six Nations is a good indicator of how the European sides are shaping up. Let’s examine how the home nations could get on.

England

The first country from Europe that can claim to have an excellent chance of winning the World Cup are the last European side to achieve the feat- England. It has been a disappointing two years for the country in terms of performances in the Six Nations; with both competitions ending in tears after defeats to Wales and Ireland. However, Eddie Jones admitted after the Six Nations that he used the competition as a way to test tactics ahead of the World Cup. Immediately, that means that pressure will be on him for the competition and he will need to hit the ground running in a tough Pool C, which also includes Argentina and France as genuine quarterfinal hopefuls While their Six Nations campaign ultimately ended in disaster by finishing second, they did at least produce a wonderful performance in Ireland. They beat the reigning champions 32-20, and this could be significant ahead of the World Cup. England’s autumn internationals at the end of last year may be a better indicator of how England might perform. They beat South Africa and Australia but narrowly lost to New Zealand. England remains a contender to win the World Cup, but the pressure on Jones may be a crucial factor in their ultimate downfall.

Wales

They do say that records are there to be broken and Wales will be looking to equal that record set by England and win a second significant title in the same calendar year. While it is difficult to ignore the fact that sides don’t tend to win both the Six Nations and

the World Cup in the same calendar year; it is essential to remember that this isn’t any ordinary Welsh side. They will begin the 2019 World Cup as the second best side in the world according to the rankings and should they start their group campaign strongly then there is no reason why they can’t win the competition.

They ended the recent Six Nations as Grand Slam winners, with the most important victory of that campaign coming in a 21-13 victory over the English. The Welsh enjoy going into competitions as underdogs, and that is a tag that Warren Gatland prefers his side to carry. Gatland himself will be looking to end his record-breaking time at the helm with the Welsh on the ultimate high before he steps away from the national side after the World Cup. Wales have been drawn in a comfortable looking group with Australia, Fiji, Georgia and Uruguay. The team that finishes top of this pool will have an excellent chance of making at least the semi-finals where they will likely come up against Ireland for a place in the World Cup final

Ireland

The Irish have yet to even reach the semi-finals stage of the World Cup, but their 2018 form means that they remain a hope and a potential clash with the Welsh in the semi-finals will be enough to get rugby fans excited. In 2018 they achieved the Grand Slam in the Six Nations as they won the title while remaining unbeaten throughout the competition, and despite a disappointing showing this year they remain a talented squad that should be taken seriously in Japan.

Other teams around the world have been quick to realise the talent in the Irish squad, with the Welsh manager claiming that his side were facing ‘the best rugby side on the planet’ before their showdown in the Six Nations.

Although the Welsh did beat them on that occasion, it is difficult for a team to emulate Six Nations glory with a World Cup success; with only England achieving that feat in 2003.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Centre Stage in Balsall Common’s next production is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C S Lewis.

During the second world war four children are evacuated to a large old house in the country. Whilst exploring they go into a large Wardrobe and find themselves in the magical snow covered land of Narnia where they encounter the White Witch (representing evil) and Aslan the lion and King of the Beasts (representing good). The play follows their adventures and ends with a great battle when good triumphs over evil.

Performances (suitable for all grown up’s and all children over 5) are at the Heart of England School in Balsall Common an the 22nd November at 7.30 and the 23rd November at 2.30 and 7.30. Spooky Spectacular at West Midland Safari Park Open 19 Oct - 3 Nov Looking for an exciting day out full of Halloween activities for all the family in the West Midlands? Families can look forward to a Halloween day out to remember during the Spooky Spectacular.

So enjoy the seasonal fun and games as well as the usual attractions such as the Safari Drive-through and rides.

Also, adding to the atmosphere will be Halloween decorations galore including illuminated scarecrows and a host of pumpkins.
