Ending the year on a high note...

Well, another year is coming to an end - and for us as a family it’s certainly had its ups and downs.

A long-awaited family holiday in the summer was cut short when my husband slipped on a wet mat and ended up in A&E with a dislocated and broken ankle, that eventually needed surgery and a long period of rehab. Being a fanatic Argyle supporter and unable to get to matches meant that he was getting pretty miserable on matchdays.

But then the fantastic disability team at Argyle came to the rescue and made sure that he could get to games. He was full of praise for all the people at Home Park who made it all possible and you can read his tribute to them on pages 34 and 35.

Elsewhere, this issue has something of a literary theme. First of all we meet the Peverell author whose debut detective story is attracting five star reviews, while vicar’s wife Tanya Marlow talks about the story behind her first book, aptly titled ‘For Those Who Wait.’

We also feature three success stories of enterprising local women who are making their mark in business.

First of all there’s beauty therapist Tara Leader who has successfully launched a range of organic skincare products; then there is Fiona Miller who has opened a stylish new retail outlet in Peverell and finally we meet Stoke mum Janine Boylin, whose online fashion boutique is attracting customers from all over the UK and beyond.

We also catch up with Edmond Davari who is celebrating the opening of his new Persian restaurant in the city centre.

Debut novel receives five star reviews for author Charles A gripping crime thriller set against the backdrop of the Royal William Yard is attracting five star reviews.

Former wine merchant, teacher and therapist, Charles Becker spent more than two years researching and writing his first novel - Murder at Royal William Yard.

Charles, who lives in Peverell, said: “I have been interested in detective stories ever since I was a child and it has always been my dream to write a crime thriller. Micky Spillane was a real favourite.

“I had tried to find time to write when I was working full time, but I always had to give up because I needed to earn a living,” he said.

But after retiring in 2011 Charles eventually had time on his hands to concentrate on his writing skills. He joined the Plymouth Writers Group and was successful in having a number of short stories and poems published in local magazines.

“I have found that being part of the Plymouth Writers Group has been a real help for me. We meet on a monthly basis and we have to learn the discipline of writing 1500 words each time to be critiqued by other members of the group. The feedback is both encouraging and helpful.

“I also joined the Playwriters Group in Plymouth to learn more about that aspect of writing,” he added.

When he had finished the first draft of Murder at Royal William Yard, Charles approached Jim Bruce, who runs an editorial and publishing service called ebooklover.

“I would like to have had the time to find an agent and publisher, but in the end I chose to go down the self-publishing route. I asked Jim Bruce to give me an honest opinion of the novel - and he was very encouraging and had nothing but good things to say about it.

“Familiar locations in Plymouth and the surrounding area feature prominently in the book and I chose Royal William Yard as the backdrop for the book because it is such a fabulous setting,” added Charles.

The main characters, DI Lou Beradino and DS Fran Bannerman, following up an emergency call, find themselves drawn into the tangled affairs of a corrupt city councillor.

by the childhood demons of his own missing father. Then a killer strikes at the historic Royal William Yard – and Connie is abducted.

Vicar’s wife Tanya hopes her new those who wait for answers to li Tanya Marlow is the wife of a Plymouth vicar. Her first book, Those Who Wait, has just been published. She wrote it over two years – from her bed. She explains how a life tragedy has shown her the challenge - and surprising value - of waiting.

Your book is all about waiting – what’s your own experience of that?

I’ve always loved living life to the full. In my twenties, I had a job I loved, a happy marriage. I was fit and loved running. But chronic illness crept up on me. In 2007, the doctors agreed my excessive sleepiness, muscle pain, lack of concentration and vulnerable immune system had a name: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).

Ten years ago, I walked in the Lake District because I was told exercise would help. The next day, I couldn’t walk more than ten minutes before my legs collapsed. I assumed it was temporary. But unlike most conditions, exercise and overexertion typically makes ME worse, not better. The following day, I could only walk five minutes. I ended up needing to use a wheelchair.

What happened when you gave birth?

I suspected going through labour could worsen my ME, but I had no idea how bad it could be. The day after giving birth, I awoke with a gorgeous baby – and a brand new

disability. I couldn’t stand or walk unsupported. I could barely talk. My temperature rose and fell dramatically, and my heart struggled to cope with even sitting up. I was as helpless as my baby.

Because ME is associated with ‘Chronic Fatigue Syndrome’, people think it’s just being ‘tired all the time’. It’s not. Severe ME is walking a few paces before your legs give way. It’s being in so much pain you can barely breathe. It’s your brain interpreting light and sound as pain. It’s a mind so scrambled you can’t speak or remember your own name.

Seven years on, I live an ‘in-between’ life: I am stable, but only if I’m lying in bed 21 hours a day. I can leave the house once a fortnight, in a wheelchair, to see my son in a school play or watch him scoot along the Hoe while I breathe in the sea air. Then I rest and wait for my energy to return.

I could recover from ME; I could get worse. Death from ME is possible, though very rare. In the meantime, I wait.

Why is waiting so hard?

Everyone’s waiting for something. Yet we all hate waiting.

It’s hard enough in a doctor’s waiting room – how long can you sit patiently before reaching for your phone or magazine for distraction? It’s really uncomfortable not knowing the outcome of an appointment or interview – like sitting on a very hard fence, longing to land on either side.

But there are also bigger things that we wait for: a real home, a spouse, a family, a loved one to return, a second chance, true contentment. The tension can be agonising. We feel out of control, helpless, alone.

What keeps you sane?

our clothes. Other friends supported us practically, too, and surrounded us with love. My son brings me joy daily. I’ve asked God angry questions, but found comfort there, too.

Five years ago, I started blogging about holding onto faith in hard times, slowly jabbing out sentences with my thumb on an iPad. For me, writing has been a lifeline – it’s my way of telling the world, “I’m still here.”

I also campaign online with #MEAction Network for better research and treatment of ME patients. Currently, I’m promoting the award-winning ME documentary, ‘Unrest’, which shows how people hold onto hope in hopeless situations. (The film is coming to the Plymouth Arts Centre in early 2018.)

This all gives me purpose while I’m lying in my bed. But I’ll be honest – being in limbo is hard. It’s mentally exhausting.

That’s why I wrote this book for those who long for a better life. It retells the stories of four well-known Bible heroes, like a gripping novel, so you don’t have to know anything about the Bible to enjoy it.

It explores how even ‘saints’ struggle with waiting – yet hope can be found. I’m hoping Those Who Wait can be as healing for readers as writing it has been for me.

A brilliant new shop has just opened on Trelawney Road in Peverell.

Located on the junction of two roads, the entrance is actually on Barn Park Road. Many readers may remember it as Celebrities Hair Salon, but now it has been transformed into an Aladdin’s cave of accessories.

I went to meet Fiona Miller, the visionary behind this new venture and was impressed that, One Four Two Lifestyle Accessories, is a place that is full of exciting and unexpected things.

An array of French antique display stands present a whole host of items ranging from handbags, hats, scarves, jewellery, purses, wash-bags, socks, candles and much more.

Fiona told me: “The reason I have a passion for accessories is because they are so versatile. Good accessories can totally transform an outfit.

Take the little black dress as an example, this simple look can be changed with a few accessories into a completely different style or colour scheme. It really is a case of the little things making the big difference.”

To illustrate the point, Fiona showed me a simple black wrap and explained how it could look great with a pair of jeans but equally as good with a beautiful gown for a New Year’s ball.

It took time for me to take in all that was on offer and the more I walked around the shop the more I realised just how much there was.

Fiona pointed out some of the pieces of jewellery. She said: “Although I have sourced cottage industry items from Devon and Cornwall, much that I have in the shop is 100% handcrafted by a local women’s cooperative in Ecuador.

“This unique and ethical jewellery comes from the Tagua Palm Tree Nut, which is often called Vegetal Ivory. It is coloured using natural food pigments and looks and feels beautiful!”

I noticed some very attractive fedora hats in a whole host of autumnal shades alongside winter beanies with pom poms.

There are a great range of scarves in warm winter mixes, as well as pashminas, wraps and stoles.

Fiona creates an A beautiful accessor Fiona has also chosen handbags in all different shapes and sizes - so there is something for every function. She told me: “The Brakeburn range are lovely for everyday use. They come in cross body, shoppers and toiletries. I also stock makeup bags, purses, overnight bags, evening clutches and all sorts of bags in leather.”

I asked Fiona how she became interested in accessories and she told me it all started when she was an ‘at home mum’ and had an opportunity to refurbish property.

She said: “I would oversee the building work which in many ways was the easier part. It was when it came down to the finer details of the finishing touches – that became the harder thing to do.

“I have introduced some pieces into the shop that are home accessories too. These include cushions, sets of twinkly lights, candles, room diffusers and bottle openers. As the seasons change I will bring in different bits and pieces. The shop really is an eclectic mix!”

Fiona also stocks a range for men which include leather wash bags, socks, scarves and briefs.

I was really impressed with the simple beauty and quality of the items in One Four Two Lifestyle Accessories. It is such a handy place to pop into with easy outside parking. Please be aware of the opening times which are: Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm.

It’s another wrap for Edmon opening of his Persian resta A new Persian restaurant - Toot - has opened in Plymouth city centre and for well-known restaurateur Edmond Davari, it’s all down to a happy twist of fate.

Edmond, who previously ran several restaurants in the city, wasn’t looking to open a restaurant again after setting up a successful outside catering company, Main Event South West.

Until, that is, he discovered that the former ENGY restaurant in Mayflower Street was closing and he was offered the chance to take over the building: “I wasn’t interested until this came up,’ he said. “I used to come into ENGY and one day, the lady who owned it said she was having to close it down and move back to Dubai.

“The fire has always been in me and I believe in fate, so I think this was meant to be. I’m still running Main Event South West, but this just fell in my lap.

“The feedback has been incredible,” he added.

“Everyone has been so kind and lots of my old customers have been coming in, so we’ve been very busy.”

This is Edmond’s 20th restaurant. In the past, he had some

of Plymouth’s most popular restaurants including Sardi’s (now Lorenzo’s), Souk, Zucca, Asia Chic and Papa Joe’s. However, the recession hit hard, prompting him to close them and focus on his catering business.

Although Toot opened its doors in October, the official launch actually took place in November. The restaurant takes its name from the Persian mulberry fruit.

Edmond has retained much of the same brightly-coloured interior but has created a Persian ambience with Persian calligraphy on the walls and vintage movie posters from Iran, where he lived before moving to England 40 years ago: “I love the look and the ambience,” he said.

“It’s fun, it’s funky, it’s informal and it’s friendly. And it’s not just about Persian food. It’s also about Persian culture which is why we have the music and the pictures on the walls. Persia has such a rich culture that a lot of people don’t realise.”

The kitchen has been refitted and now boasts a Persian BBQ, where chef Mehdi presides over the restaurant’s most popular dish, Chelo Koobideh made with minced lamb and served with saffron rice and grilled tomatoes. The skewers can also be made with chicken and served in a flatbread wrap, which is made fresh on the flatbread oven in the restaurant for customers to watch.

Most dishes are under £10 and Edmond says: “They’re very filling and the portions are big! We guide customers through the menu and we encourage them to eat the flatbread dishes by tearing them up and eating them with their hands. It’s all part of the experience.”

“People are starting to really enjoy Persian food. It’s very en vogue at the moment, a bit like Moroccan food was 20 years ago,” said Edmond. “Some of the most popular recipes are thousands of years old, they’ve been passed down through many generations. And although we use spices, they are very aromatic rather than hot, so the food isn’t spicy.”

Customers can order food to take away, or can pop in for a coffee or Persian tea and pastry. Cakes are also available to take out. At the time of writing, Toot was about to get its alcohol licence, too.

Toot is open from 12 noon to 11pm, seven days a week.

There is a public car park immediately behind with some free spaces at the far end in the evening, and a multi-storey directly opposite. It is also next to the bus stops in Mayflower Street.

Walk-ins are welcome, but prior booking is advisable for large groups to avoid disappointment. The restaurant over two floors can accommodate 60 diners.

So, how is Edmond enjoying being back in the heart of Plymouth’s independent restaurant scene? “I never went away!

“I’ve always brought new things to Plymouth, it’s something I’m very proud about. But this food is especially close to my heart. It’s food that I’m used to and food that I love. And it’s incredible to meet up with so many old friends again. I’m loving it.”

For the first time, these ‘relaxed’ sessions have been designed to welcome audience members who might benefit from a more informal experience, such as those with autism and sensory or communication needs.

Exhibitions and Other Events

In memory of movie star Gloria Grahame - and a very special volunteer called John Leonard I must confess I decided I had to book Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool for Plymouth Arts Centre a year before I had even seen it. When I heard that filming had started, there was no question in my mind that we were going to screen it.

When I started as film programmer at Plymouth Arts Centre, almost 20 years ago, the first volunteer I got to know was a man called John Leonard. The arts centre, like many other small arts organisations relies heavily on its volunteer staff and they are a wonderful bunch of people, from all walks of life, of all ages and with many interests.

John’s passion was for films and his knowledge was extensive. He particularly loved films from the golden age of Hollywood and we would spend many hours chatting about our favourite directors and stars.

There were two film stars who he idolised; Dirk Bogarde and Gloria Grahame. I knew Bogarde of course but my memory had to be prompted to place Grahame. As soon as he mentioned Violet Bick in It’s A Wonderful Life I realised who she was.

Who can forget her brilliant performance as the small town flirt who dreams of the bright

lights and big city? When she puts her dreams aside to help George Bailey, it’s such a nuanced performance we forget she is condemning herself to the parochial life she hates. There is an effervescence about her that can only have been achieved by an actress this good. She is sass personified.

John recommended I find a copy of her great noir film In A Lonely Place and watch her in a completely different role. Directed by Nicholas Ray in 1950, it is now considered to be one of the very best film noirs with both Grahame and her co-star Humphrey Bogart at the pinnacle of their considerable talents.

At a time in Hollywood when it seems women on screen were allowed to be smart, sad, world weary and tough, Grahame brings an added complexity to her portrayal of Laurel Gray adding a vulnerability that is heartbreaking to watch.

John lent me a book he thought I would enjoy: Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool.

Gloria Grahame had a love affair while in her fifties with actor Peter Turner, who was in his twenties.

She ended up spending her last days in his family home in Liverpool. The story seemed too far-fetched to be believable. But I knew John had better taste than that so I read it and it turned out to be a tender, discreet, unassuming love story.

And now, all these years later, the memoir has become a film and what a lovely film it is. The screenplay dares to show the burgeoning romance between Peter and the much older Grahame with a sweetness and tenderness that is immediately believable and captures the joy, the fun and the poignancy of it.

The only tragedy in the film is her refusal to face the reality of her illness and the sense we get of a brilliant life cut unnecessarily short.

Local exhibitions Until Dec 21 2018 PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION Council House, Armada Way Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction.

Nov 11 - Jan 1 2018 FINDING PREHISTORY AT DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK Plymouth City Museum and Gallery: On Tour, National Park Visitor Centre, Princetown Explore the Dartmoor treasures from Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s collections in this small exhibition which shines a light on the lives of the people who lived on Dartmoor thousands of years ago. Highlights include some Bronze Age ceramic urns, used both as household items and also for burying the cremated remains of the dead.

You can also see stone tools such as the magnificent axe-hammer from Crocken Tor, and the flint implement from the Whitehorse Hill collection.

Dec 1 - 16 BETWEEN: ARTS AND HUMANITIES MA SHOW 2017 Peninsula Arts Gallery, Plymouth University Showcasing the latest works created by 2017 Art, Architecture and Design students, Between features a range of contemporary pieces including video, installation, sculpture, photography, creative writing and 3D design. Between is inspired by the Tibetan word ‘bardo’ (loosely translated as in-between state) and the artwork in the show represents the state of existence between life and death, existence and the unconscious, reality and liberation. The students involved completed their MA awards in Contemporary Art Practice, MA Photography and the Land, MA Photography and the Book, MA Photography and Writing and Three Dimensional Design.

Dec 1 - Jan 20 MATERIALS OF RESISTANCE: CLARE THORNTON EXHIBITION Plymouth Arts Centre New exhibition with interdisciplinary artists and educator Clare Thornton who explores her longstanding interest in folding and falling. Previously, she worked with these ideas using her own body in performances, but in this, they find new means of expression through ceramics and print. She has produced a sculptural installation comprising of works that adorn Plymouth Arts Centre’s interiors, employing coiled, extruded clay and draped, printed pieces. The exhibition explores time and pressure upon materials teetering on the edge of collapse.

Why running an online bou perfect fit for businesswom

Frock the High Street is an online ladies’ fashion boutique born in Plymouth, and making an impact in the international fashion market, selling ‘fancy frocks’ for nights out, special occasions and after work drinks.

Formed from the experience of running independent women’s fashion boutiques on the high street, the all-female online retail brand was created to hand pick fabulous clothing lines and sell them at the best prices.

Incredibly, FrocktheHighStreet.com was born out of a spare room in Stoke, when mum and founder Janine Boylin put the needs of her poorly child first, closing her successful salon and boutique ‘Spoilt’ on Southside Street.

A testament to Plymouth girl power, Janine has over 20 years’ experience in managing and owning salons and boutiques in the city. Also in Janine’s team are mum of one Jo, who has 20 years of experience in marketing and advertising, and mum of three Karly who has 12 years of experience as a broadcast journalist.

Danielle manages the accounts and has 10 years’ experience in project management, while Cheryl helps with the smooth running of things and can even be seen doing a spot of modelling.

Janine uses her extensive fashion network to provide local models for their glamorous frocks at shows and events.

The garments range in price, from the affordable to a premium price range, but one thing Frock like to promise is that every one of their customers will feel unique, as they only stock a few of each item, in sizes ranging from 6 to 18.

Lasting Powers of Attorney – why use a professional?

We frequently hear of the benefits of putting our affairs in order during our lifetime to include not only the preparation of a Will but also preparing and registering Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) so that if needed, our nominated Attorneys can deal with the management of our financial and health affairs during our lifetime.

The paperwork to prepare an LPA is substantial and can be off putting hence the need to lean upon a professional advisor. At Wolferstans, we can obtain all the information from you in order to properly prepare the documents before submitting them to the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) for registration, as it is necessary for the LPA to be registered before they can be used.

Registering the documents with the OPG can be a daunting process in itself. It is worth noting that the OPG have very strict requirements as to the order of signatures within the documents but there has been much talk recently in the legal press of the OPG clamping down on other issues such as the names and addresses of parties within the documents being inserted in full and other particular requirements. If the OPG deem the document to contain an error, the Court may reject the application and you may need to start the process all over again and potentially pay a further Court registration fee. As part of our service, we will prepare the documents correctly; attend to the signing of the papers by all parties, act as Certificate Provider if appropriate, and deal with the registration formalities with the OPG. There are other benefits of appointing a solicitor to prepare and register an LPA on your behalf; as part of our service we would check to ensure that the Donor (the person making the LPA) is acting of their own free will and no-one is exerting any undue influence upon them. Furthermore, if appropriate, we would act as a Certificate Provider which

is an integral part of the LPA process and effectively is, in our capacity as a professional, a statement that the Donor is mentally capable of making a LPA. It is a requirement that someone acts as a Certificate Provider and by appointing a professional from the outset, this alleviates the question of who can act in this role. Lastly, within the body of a LPA there is a section that details any restrictions, instructions or preferences that you would wish to include. Typically this section gives some direction to your attorneys as to how you wish them to act in certain situations.

Unfortunately, this is by no means a section whereby you can draft however you wish and by using a solicitor, we can advise upon what provisions would be workable and also, provisions that would make the LPA invalid.

By appointing a legal professional to prepare and register the documents on your behalf, the stress of ‘getting it right’ can be dealt with by us. It seems to come around quicker and quicker each year.

Tree-me

Christmas tree season is well and truly upon us at the garden centre and all the staff are going flat out to meet demand. As always we have the three favourite varieties of cut trees available.

The first is traditional Norway Spruce, a thick and bushy tree that the Victorians would use for their tree and it was a traditional favourite for many years. It is highly scented, but the needles are very prickly and it does drop them, but it is the most cost effective Christmas tree and many people still love them for its nostalgic quality.

The second cut tree we stock is a relative newcomer to the Christmas tree market – the modern and trendy Fraser Fir. This has soft needles that are highly scented and have a slightly bluer tone to them.

These are naturally slender trees, so are perfect for households where space is tight. They are considered low needle drop trees and are good at retaining their needles.

The third and best selling variety of cut tree is the Nordmann Fir. This a thick, bushy tree with dark green glossy needles that are soft, making it easy to decorate. It doesn’t have much of a scent, but it is by far the best at needle retention and holds on to them superbly.

We also have a superb range of pot grown Nordmann Firs being chosen for Plymouth Garden Centre Christmas trees this year which include Nordmann Fir and Norway spruce, but its the three new varieties of pot grown Christmas trees that have got us excellent backdrop of colour in the rear of the border in excited. winter.
