How many times do we watch the news or read the newspaper and comment on a tragic accident or illness that has taken the victim by surprise? Sadly too often!

Mayflower 400 plans unveiled In less than 12 months the spectacular Mayflower 400 celebrations will be launched in Plymouth.

It will herald the start of a year-long programme of events and activities which will put Plymouth firmly on the regional, national and international map.

It is estimated that worlwide there are as many as 35 million direct descendants of the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed from the Barbican in September 1620 and they are being invited to what is being described as the ‘world’s biggest family reunion.’

Plymouth will be hosting more than 400 events between November 2019 and November 2020, including the week-long Mayflower Muster in September 2020, which will include a special ceremony to officially commemorate the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers.

It is estimated that up to 400,000 people will attend the Mayflower Muster, which will feature naval displays, fly pasts and a host of other activities.

2020 will also see the official opening of The Box, Plymouth’s £38m cultural attraction which will be double the size of the City Museum & Art Galllery which it is replacing.

But Mayflower 400 will not be just about large-scale events - there will be a huge range of special Mayflowerthemed activities involving hundreds of local groups and organisations.

Organisers of Mayflower 400 want as many individuals, organisations, businesses and groups to get on board for what promises to be a truly memorable year.

There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to get involved too - and you can find out more about this in our coverage of the launch on pages 30 and 31.

Solicitor Jonathan Madge, who is a Director at The Family Law Company, looks at whether you need a family lawyer to get divorced and what you can do yourself.

Your first meeting with your lawyer is a good time to discuss carefully what you want to achieve, which aspects of the process you want to take on and which you would rather leave to them.

You and your lawyer may conclude that you can manage most or all of the actual divorce proceedings yourself. The main form for divorce, the Petition, can be downloaded from the gov.uk website and submitted online. Even if you get your lawyer to help you prepare the Petition it will still save you money if you submit it yourself. You can check in at each stage with your lawyer to make sure you are on the right track.

If you do try to do it yourself and encounter problems at any stage, you may decide that you now need your lawyer’s closer support. And in some cases, your lawyer might immediately see complications in your particular case and recommend managing it from the outset.

Arrangements for children Your lawyer doesn’t necessarily need to be that involved with arrangements for the children. We will ensure that you Jonathan understand how the Madge legal framework of children law can be used to support you and your former spouse in managing arrangements for the children.

But these days, the court no longer has to make a specific order about which parent the children should live with. As long as you are happy that things are working well for you and the children, our involvement can be minimal.

Financial arrangements When it comes to finances, we are likely to be more closely involved. Clients who are confident in dealing with financial issues might negotiate their own settlement through amicable discussions or by using Mediation. We will

support you as needed during negotiations, but you will run these yourself.

Once you have negotiated a settlement, we step in to set out the terms of your settlement in a Court Order and manage the process of seeking the court’s consent to the Order.

If your discussions break down, we can take over negotiations with your former spouse’s lawyer; we will work out what you have already agreed on and work towards reaching a settlement on those issues that you could not agree on. If successful we will set out the agreement in a Court Order as before.

You may prefer us to manage all the negotiations for you.

Before negotiations start you could take the lead in preparing your ‘financial disclosure’ - a full account of your overall financial position - if this has not already been done. The more of this you do yourself, the more money you are likely to save. If we do negotiate a settlement, we then set out the agreement

in a Court Order.

But if all negotiations are unsuccessful, we may need to make a court application for the Court to manage reaching a settlement.

Otherwise the Judge will need to make a final Order setting out a once-and-forall conclusion about how the finances are divided.

Realistically we need to be involved in this, as our expertise will help to secure a good and fair financial outcome for you.

Working with you Where and when you manage parts of the divorce process and where, when and how your lawyer will help and represent you is an ongoing conversation we have with you, allowing you to have as much input and control in the process as you want. We see this as the best way to help you and your family get from where you are at the beginning of the process to where you want to be at the end.

Take the plunge and join the Firestone Freezer Four Plymouth dads have come up with plans for the city's first organised New Year's Day swim for charity.

Known as the Firestone Freezer - as it will be taking place in Firestone Bay off Devil's Point - the event will raise money for local charities.

One of the organisers, Tom Dingwall, said: "Myself and three friends - Ian Ames, Oli Mackie and Joe Phillips - got to know each other mainly through our children attending Stoke Primary School.

"The idea for the swim came during a paddleboarding session around Drake’s Island during the summer. The four of us reflected on the unique setting of Firestone Bay and the value of bringing the community together to mark significant moments during our busy lives.

"We all love our city and didn't understand why Britain's Ocean City does not already have a New Year's Day open water swimming event. We decided we wanted to do something bordering on the ludicrous and things just developed from that."

The quartet have already secured sponsorship from local businesses and want people to raise as much money as possible through sponsorship and donations.

The event starts at 12 noon on Tuesday January 1 at Stonehouse Lawn Tennis Club, just above the Artillery Tower restaurant. Entry is free and participants are encouraged to take part in fancy dress.

Prizes will be awarded by a special guest for the best dressed adult, child and family. After the dip, warming refreshments will be available for all participants back up the steps at the tennis club.

"We want people to start 2019 with an instant detox by joining a community of brave souls for a brief dip in the refreshing waters of Firestone Bay - while raising money for a Plymouth charity," said Tom. In it's first year, the swim will be raising money for

Plymouth-based First Light which supports thousands of people each year affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence across Cornwall, Devon and Wiltshire.

Tom said that wetsuits are not mandatory, although the water temperature is expected to be around 9 degrees Centigrade.

Participants should bring a towel, warm and waterproof clothes and a bottle of water.

"People can swim for as long as they like - there is no set course. Anything from a paddle to a plunge will be fine, but this is not an endurance event and we expect all swimmers to be in and out of the water within 15 to 20 minutes," he added.

"The event is suitable for families, although children will be encouraged to stay in the tidal pool and under 8s must be accompanied by a competent adult at all times."

Walking through the front door at Helen Copson’s home, and it’s as if you’re stepping into one of her blogs. Given that her blogs are a ‘warts and all’ honest portrayal of everyday life with three young boys – including 17-monthold twins – this is a good thing.

On arrival, all three boys are in a playful mood. There are toys everywhere, as you’d expect ('watch you don’t trip over anything' was a regular refrain), and then, as we’re about to take some photos, one of the boys goes into hiding.

It’s a scene you’re likely to see brought humorously to life in Helen’s blog, Twins, Tantrums and Cold Coffee. Helen has just won a national award for the blog, which has struck a chord with thousands of readers – mainly mums, but some dads too – not just in Plymouth but around the world.

With quiet moments at a premium, our chat at her home in Elburton has been planned with military precision. Threeyear-old Thomas is about to be collected by granny and grandad for a trip to the library, and non-identical twins Toby and Isaac are due for their afternoon kip, fingers crossed.

The plan works like a dream and, over an afternoon cuppa, Helen explains how she came to be an award-winning blogger.

Helen had been a local journalist for nearly 15 years when she had Thomas, and she took the decision to leave her job to be a stay-at-home mum. Then, in 2017, the twins came along: “With three boys under 2.5, every day was crazy, and I just thought ‘how ridiculous is this?’ There was so much material

to write about, all of it real-life. I was always putting funny status updates onto my personal Facebook page and I just had to write about it because I knew there must be lots of other mums out there who could relate to it.

“Also, I missed writing, so this was a way to keep my hand in. And it’s a bit of ‘me’ time – even though the blogs are about the boys.”

Helen’s first blog in November 2017 was read by more than 1,000 people and it wasn’t long before the feedback started to come in: “I did think at one point ‘who on earth is going to read this?’ But the feedback was amazing. My blogs are very honest. Some days can be pretty rubbish but that’s the same for every mum. I don’t filter that out and pretend everything’s perfect, which some blogs do. I write as a I speak, and I do swear in some of the blogs, if it’s a really bad day! Almost all the feedback says: ‘We love your honesty, you say it like it is’.”

Not all of it though: “My very first blog told the story of how I felt when my husband Nick and I found out we were going to have twin boys. At the time, I thought, sarcastically ‘oh, great’. I was 37. We already had Thomas and I’d always wanted two children, a boy and a girl. Obviously, I wouldn’t change a thing now, but this is how I felt then, twins was the last thing I wanted and I openly admitted that.

“The blog prompted a response from one woman who didn't like it and was upset as she said she'd been through 20 years of IVF. Of course, I have every sympathy for her circumstances, it’s terribly sad. But I said, in the nicest possible way, that this is my blog, and these are my experiences. But by and large, people love that I’m blunt.”

In just over a year, Twins, Tantrums and Cold Coffee’s social media pages have grown to over 2,100 followers on Facebook and 4,200 on Instagram. And Helen’s readers have just helped her to win the BritMums Brilliance in Blogging 2018 Fresh Voice award, which is judged 50% by public vote and 50% by the award judges. The judges said: “Helen has her hands full with twins and a toddler! We love her humour and a peek into her busy life.”

“I have to thank my readers for voting for me,” said Helen.

“I feel like I know some of them, especially the ones who interact on the Facebook page and share their photos and stories. I’d say around a third of my blog readers are from Plymouth and when I write about anything that’s local, they always join in. The other two-thirds are from all over the world, which is pretty mad really.”

With Thomas now at pre-school two days a week, and the twins going to Helen’s mum and dad’s one morning each week, Helen is able to crack on and write her weekly blog: “I have so much material I could write three blogs a week, but I don’t have the time. Some days, I think: “Why have I done this? There’s not enough hours in the day. Sometimes, I’ll be writing or doing social media stuff at midnight or 1am, either in the kitchen or on the laptop in bed. By the time I finish it, it’s almost time to get up.”

Helen also works as a freelance travel writer and her recent articles have focused on child-friendly hotels and locations.

She would also love to write for parenting magazines or websites when she has more time. So, what does the future hold for Twins, Tantrums and Cold Coffee? “The blog will change as the boys grow older, but I’m going to keep it going,” said Helen. “Apart from anything, it helps to keep me sane!”

All Riches Boutique co-owner Rachel says cancer diagnosis has ‘spurred’ them on Plymouth women Rachel Smith and Lisa Lee-Bucknell met as teenagers and even after heading off in different directions to pursue their careers and bring up their families, they still kept in touch over the years and have maintained a life-long friendship.

Whilst Lisa had stayed living in Plymouth, Rachel returned in 2013 after 16 years living and working away in Oxford and the Midlands. Life had changed quite a bit for both of them; fed up with working for other people, they decided to launch a business of their own, and so All Riches was formed, the name cleverly borne by Lisa from an anagram of their first names.

They began in Tavistock Pannier Market as market traders selling Indian textiles, cushions, wall hangings and throws, amongst other various goods. Although mainly happy with what they were doing, their real passion was in women’s clothing. Both in their 50s and at the time being a bit larger and slightly curvier ladies, they struggled to find fashionable items, which gave them the idea to evolve into All Riches Boutique. Their thinking was: if they couldn’t go out

and buy the clothes they liked, they’d stock them themselves.

So, after the Pannier Market closed for a major refurbishment in December 2017, they started to plan and execute their new venture.

After a short time, they moved into a small unit in The House that Jack Built on the Barbican in Southside Street, still trading with their colourful textiles whilst building up their stock of ladies clothing. When a bigger unit became available at the end of the summer 2018, they snapped it up.

The boutique stocks a carefully selected range of smart casual ladies clothing, footwear, handbags & accessories.

Brands include Joe Brown’s, Jayley, Amazing Woman, Visconti of London, Ginger Toby, Yauvan and, coming in the New Year, are Haris Cotton and the Religion Collection.

Lisa said: “We sell brands that you just won’t find on the high street in the city centre, from the UK, Italy, France, Greece and the Far East to name a few, and we only order in a few of each item to make sure we won’t all be wearing the same thing. We have our favourite ranges, which we’ll always re-stock, but we like to keep the boutique looking fresh by bringing in new

labels. And we are always keen to hear feedback from our customers of what they would like us to stock and are happy to source their favourite brands if we can. We pride ourselves in stocking quality ladies clothing to suit all budgets, so customers will always be able to find something they can afford as well as luxury items.”

As well as the branded clothing, Rachel and Lisa have their own range of handmade one-off items, including beautiful woollen tops, poncho’s, hats, scarves and gloves which can also be commissioned to suit. They are still stocking the Indian textiles and now have gift vouchers available to purchase.

For Rachel, there is a story behind their story. In May 2017, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After gruelling chemotherapy treatment leading to surgery in December 2017, life had become difficult, which affected both the women and their families. Rachel is still “living with cancer” and she stresses the word “living” because although she is still having chemotherapy treatment, opening the boutique, travelling to fashion exhibitions and even doing the paperwork and accounts has given her purpose and something to focus on – which she couldn’t do without her trusty friend and business partner Lisa supporting her. Both have elderly parents who they are carers for, and Rachel is also the chair of Plymouth’s Head & Neck Cancer Support Group. Working alongside them and Macmillan, she is involved in the setting up of the Plymouth Area Cancer Support Network (PACS), an umbrella organisation for all cancer support groups in Plymouth. She is also involved with the start of a new Gynaecological Cancer Support Group, which wasn’t available when Rachel was first diagnosed and which she is passionate about.

Despite the challenging time, Rachel said: “Lisa and I are doing something that we love and never, ever dreamt it would be a reality, but I guess having cancer has spurred us both on and shows that you can do anything you want to in life if you put your mind to it and you want it enough. On a personal level, when we get up every morning, we have the shop and because we enjoy it, it doesn’t feel like we’re coming to work.

“These are exciting times for us because we’re heading back to London in February to look at signing new labels. We also have the possibility of having the Lenkiewicz gallery reopen next door to us in the New Year, plus we have Mayflower 400 coming up in 2020. We’re surrounded by a supportive business community and we’re getting some fabulous feedback from our customers. What’s not to love!”

Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6.

Rub the lamb with olive oil and season with crushed sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the Lamb in a heavy-based roasting tin with the shallots and roast for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and drain off any fat.

Add the thyme sprigs and the garlic. Reduce the oven temp to 130°C/275°F/Gas mark 1. Return the lamb to the oven. Cover the tin tightly with the foil and cook for 4 ½ hours. Pour the red wine into a pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat.

Remove the roasting tin from the oven and pour the red wine

FOOD MATTERS over the lamb. Return the lamb to the oven, covered, and cook for a further hour. Remove the lamb from the oven and carefully put the lamb, garlic and shallots in a warm serving dish. Be careful as the lamb should be just falling off the bone. Cover and set aside to rest. Place the roasting tin over a high flame and heat the wine juices. Skim off any fat and stir in the chopped thyme. Season with crushed sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour over the lamb and serve. Serve with potato and celeriac mash and some green beans.

For vegetarians - mixed mushrooms and chestnuts with brioche and red wine

Ingredients (serves six): 6 brioche rolls; 200g chestnut mushrooms; 200g shiitake mushrooms; 200g oyster mushrooms; 1 red onion, cut into petals; 2 cloves of garlic; 2 sprigs of thyme; 300ml of red wine; 1 litre of hot vegetable stock; 2 tbsp. of cranberry jelly; 2 tbsp. of chopped parsley; 100g cooked chopped chestnuts; 40g butter; dash of olive oil Method: Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a frying pan, then add all the mushrooms and garlic. Season and add the butter. Sauté for four minutes until soft then remove from the pan and drain.

Keep the pan on the stove and add the red wine, stock and thyme and then simmer for 30 minutes. Next add the jelly and reduce by half, until it thickens. Remove the thyme and stir in the mushrooms. Cut the tops off the rolls and scoop out the filling, placing on a baking tray. Bake at 200C for seven minutes until crispy. Place the parsley and chestnuts in the mushroom mix.

Finally fill the rolls with the mushroom mix and serve.

For dessert fans - roast pears, blue cheese fondue and walnuts Ingredients (serves four): 1 tsp. olive oil; 4 ripe but firm pears (conference), peeled, cored & halved; 100ml white wine; 180g blue cheese (Devon blue); 1 tbsp. blossom honey; 50g walnut pieces, toasted

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4. Heat the olive oil in a deep non-stick frying pan. Cook the halved pears over a medium heat for 2 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan and arrange in a 20cm square gratin dish. Add the white wine to the pan that the pears were in. Add the blue cheese and honey, stir over a low heat until the cheese has melted to fondue.

Spoon the blue cheese fondue over the pears & roast in the oven for 12 – 20 minutes until golden and bubbling. Leave to stand for 2 minutes.

Spoon the pears into warmed serving dishes and sprinkle with toasted walnuts. You can use apple instead – try English Cox or Braeburn. You can also vary the blue cheese as to how strong you like your cheese.

The Arctic, oceans, polar bears and single-use plastics have all been brought together in a new family activity this winter in Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City.

20 polar bear cubs have been set loose across Plymouth’s waterfront, each with a bear fact that sends a serious message on how single-use plastics are affecting the oceans and the Arctic habitat.

With messaging supported by the WWF, the polar bear cubs have been introduced by the businessdriven Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP) and their campaign partner the National Marine Aquarium.

For 14 weeks until March 3, the Polar Bear Explorer will see the cubs hiding at locations across Sutton Harbour, the Barbican, Hoe, Millbay and Royal William Yard, in shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels along the waterfront.

Offering a new experience in Britain’s Ocean City, families are encouraged to become Polar Bear Explorers and find each of the 20 cubs. Along the way families will learn about the oceans, polar bears and how they can help to protect their natural Arctic home.

Everyone who finds all 20 polar bear cubs and completes their Explorer entry form will receive a Polar Bear Explorer certificate and will be entered into a draw to win

Join Stiltskin Theatre’s Story Stomp Plymouth’s award-winning Stiltskin Theatre has a busy programme of events in the New Year - including their take on the classic tale of Pinocchio.

Stiltskin’s Pinocchio is a heart-warming tale about Giuseppe, a carpenter, who carves a puppet out of wood and names him Pinocchio. One night a fairy comes to visit and hears Giuseppe wish that he came to life, she grants him his wish on condition that Pinocchio is always good.

Join Pinocchio and his friend, Grasshopper, as they meet unsavoury characters and get caught up in mischief. This is a wonderful adventure for the whole family, with beautiful puppets, fantastic storytelling and much more.

It will be performed at the Soapbox Children’s Theatre in Devonport Park between January 18 and 26. There are performances each day at 11am and 1.30pm.

In February Stiltskin are inviting families to join their

Until Dec 22 PLYMOUTH – FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION House of Fraser, 5th Floor, 40-46 Royal Parade, Plymouth PL1 1DY Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a major target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians. Amongst this charred and ruined city, a radical new plan was developed to enable its complete redesign and reconstruction.

MPs, Councillors and planners sought out the finest architects, designers and artists to create a new city – a modern city – worthy of replacing what had been lost. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of this post-war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collections of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explore the themes of destruction and reconstruction. Visitors of all ages can experience the inside of an Anderson Shelter, dress up in a range of replica clothing and learn more about the construction of House of Fraser itself. 9am to 5pm Monday and Wednesday to Saturday 9.30am to 5pm Tuesday; 10.30am to 4pm Sunday. Last entries 30 minutes before closing. Free admission.

Until Jan 19 LAURA PHILLIPS: I FELT LIKE THE SOUND OF A HARP The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art For Laura’s inaugural solo show, the artist presents a new body of work which takes its impetus from a building in Bristol which from 1799 to 1802 was a medical research facility known as The Pneumatic Institute.

During this time, eminent chemist Humphy Davy (1788-1829) studied the medical effects of recently discovered gases including nitrous oxide, and devised experiments examining the effects of laughing gas on himself and others. The title refers to an anecdote from Davy’s patient whilst under the influence of the drug and his struggle to articulate the new forms of sensation induced by the gas. Phillip’s work derived from research into The Pneumatic Institute evokes stories and imagery about dissociative states, elements of precarity and invisible forces depicted through a nonlinear auratic story. Phillips draws parallels to Davy’s pursuits to harness and exploit these newly discovered invisible gases, through the use of photochemical processes in a series of fabric banner works and 16mm film.

Countdown to Mayflower 400 celebrations is under way Plymouth’s spectacular Mayflower 400 programme has been unveiled.

With less than a year to the start of the 12-month celebration, organisers have announced details of the programme, which will feature over 400 events.

Mayflower 400 will put Plymouth firmly on the global stage and is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the UK, USA and the rest of the world.

Key highlights include: • The Mayflower Muster - a week long event in September running across the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s departure. It will feature the Royal Navy, ships from the US and Dutch navies, daily fly pasts and a Field Gun Festival and culminating in Armed Forces Weekend • Spectacular new events, including the Mayflower Week and Ocean Festival • A major cultural programme funded by, amongst others, £700,000 from Arts Council England that includes a music theatre collaboration between UK and US communities with local artists Seth Lakeman and Nick Stimson • Illuminate Light Festival with buildings across the waterfront featuring a myriad of digital lighting effects • Community engagement through education, arts and culture, sport and volunteering Thirteen towns and cities from all three countries will work together, creating a huge programme of events and activities in the run-up to and throughout 2020, themed around the four key Mayflower values of freedom, imagination, humanity and future.

programme for 2020 is looking truly spectacular and we’re excited to be revealing more details today. Thanks to support from Arts Council England, Plymouth City Council and the government, it will go a long way to cement Plymouth’s reputation internationally as a major city of culture.”

Arts Council England announced £700,000 for four key projects, together known as ‘Art of the Possible’. The Wampanoag, the native people of Massachusetts who played a vital role in the Mayflower story, will partner in many of the projects.

Projects include the first commission from the UK to acknowledge the cultural connection to the Wampanoag people. ‘Wampum: Stories from the Shells of Native America’ will see the creation of a new Wampum belt. Traditionally made from shells, Wampum belts are the creative expression of the Wampanoag’s stories, with each shell filled with memory and meaning. The belt will tour the UK during 2020.

A new large-scale music theatre production commissioned

by Theatre Royal Plymouth and inspired by the Mayflower story will be a collaboration between the Wampanoag and Plymouth communities, working with local musician Seth Lakeman and writer Nick Stimson and directed by Alan Lane from the Slung Low company.

The Art of the Possible will also see an amazing outdoor arts spectacle around the city centre and Plymouth Hoe and a revitalising of the Mayflower Steps monument.

Other cultural projects have received funding through the £400,000 Mayflower 400 Cultural Fund administered by Plymouth Culture, including a comedy produced by Le Navet Bête, in partnership with the Barbican Theatre, that explores the ‘special relationship’ between the UK and the USA, and ‘Roots Up!’, a mass dance led by Street Factory CIC. In May 2020, the Mayflower Ocean Festival will offer a jam-packed weekend on the water in Britain’s Ocean City,

Most of us want to start the New Year feeling great – but there’s more to it than simply heading to the gym.

Especially if you want to stay feeling fit and healthy for the whole of 2019 and for years to come.

The answer, according to Plymouth personal trainer, nutritionist and life coach Robert Beighton, is to bin fad fitness regimes and adopt a sustainable holistic approach that takes care of every part of your being.

Fitness, says Robert, forms just one part of the wellness ‘triangle’. He has created the Arro system, which is based on the three big ‘Ws’ – physical wellness, mental wellness and spiritual wellness.

Robert, 38, has been in the fitness and wellness industry for 10 years. He runs Arro Fitness and Holistic Wellness from the Plymouth Life Centre and has a big online following for his podcasts, blogs, YouTube tutorials and Facebook ‘live’ chats.

“My approach is changing the face of personal training,” said Robert. “It’s the combination of the three Ws which I think is overlooked.

“The Arro system is actually very simple and it’s a million miles away from the extreme exercise and diet fads which I believe make some outlandish claims. When people reach the stage where they feel they need some help with their fitness, they’re at a loss, they don’t know what to do. That’s why they ask for help. So it’s important that they are given good advice. And their complete health must be part of that.

“Telling someone they can stick to a regime for five days and go back to eating and drinking what they like at weekends is ridiculous. It’s the same with ‘transformational’ exercise regimes. At the end of the 12 weeks, they are really difficult to sustain which is why a large percentage of people put the weight back on again.

“Subtle, simple changes that everyone can make are better not just for now, but in the long-term. It’s like the butterfly effect. And these changes needn’t cost a penny.”

For physical wellness, Robert’s recommendation is simple:

“Be active, move, walk, get the heart rate up once or twice a week. You don’t have to do excessive exercise.

Resistance work is also important, especially for women over 40, so try lifting weights or body weight training.

Resistance increases bone density, red blood cells and muscle mass – in a good way. Resistance work is also great for mental health because it has mindfulness and meditation.”

In his job, Robert sees a lot of issues around mental health and unhappiness, which being physically fit can’t fix on its own. As well as helping his clients on a 1-2-1 basis, he also addresses mental and spiritual wellness through his life coaching videos at youtube.com/ ArroFitnessHolisticWellness and regular Facebook live videos, all completely free. The YouTube videos cover a range of issues, from gaining a life purpose and overcoming the challenges of modern life, to how to train properly.

He explained: “You need all three Ws to keep your body in tune, but it doesn’t mean you have to be over-doing it to grow in all three areas. Again, it’s a case of just keeping it nice and simple. With mental wellness, goal-setting is the most important thing you can do. Ask yourself: ‘Who am I? What drives me? What’s missing? Be honest with yourself.

Then – and this is really important – listen to what your heart says. Now you know your goals, plan meticulously to achieve them. Plan a long-term goal, that might be over five to ten years. Then break it down so you have a goal for the end of the year, then a monthly goal, then a weekly goal and keep on breaking it down until you have a daily goal. Keep a checklist and tick them off. It gives you a sense of control. You will have achieved something, and you will feel more successful and more content about your life. And you’ll see that you can achieve your long-term goal, step-by-step.”

The third W, spiritual wellness, is all about developing your character so that you feel good with yourself: “The key to this

is to ask the questions that get to the heart of who you are and who you want to be. Question why you do what you do and why you say the things you say.

Make changes so you are happy with yourself and your thoughts and actions.

Have a life purpose. This personal growth is usually ignored in the field of personal training, but, just like mental wellness, it’s crucial. If one or the other isn’t right, it will have an impact on the other areas.”

In the past decade, Robert has helped literally thousands of clients. Among them, Helen Critchley, who went from 12st 6lbs to 9st 5lbs within 18 months: “But it’s not just about losing weight,” said Helen, 53. “It’s about feeling better about yourself, having more self-confidence and you become more aware of your activity levels – and what you eat. You feel so proud of yourself afterwards, achieving something you didn’t think you could achieve. It’s the normal way I live now. I’ve changed the way I live.”

And Louk Pour-Hashemi, 33, lost almost a stone in 2018: “Robert’s method is to encompass all aspects of health and he notices things that seem hidden,” said Louk.

For Robert, it’s this “all aspects of health” that he’s passionate to share: “By embracing all three Ws, people can take control of their own wellbeing for the long-term. At the same time, if you get plenty of sleep, have an alkaline diet, and eat as much whole foods as possible, then you’re giving yourself every chance of being super healthy.

“This isn’t a health and fitness plan for the New Year, it’s for life.”

GARDENING MATTERS

By Derek Anderson & Fiona Newton of Plymouth Garden Centre We are writing this in late November so hope you all have a lovely Christmas and plan to stick to your New Year’s resolutions - that’s if you made any!

What a challenging gardening year it has been in 2018.

The season started really late, then the warm weather came with such a dramatic amount of heat that it left many of us struggling to look after our lawns and it was a constant job to keep the plants watered.

So what will 2019 bring - who can tell but let’s hope for a warmer sunny start! We are proud to say that we have just entered our 55th year at Plymouth Garden Centre. It all started in October 1963 so we are looking forward to a good gardening year and lookout for our 55th year celebrations!

We would like to start by thanking all our customers and suppliers for their support over the years.

Houseplants were one of the largest growth areas last year. There has been huge growth in the cactus sector and a strong theme running through into 2019 is plants for health both indoor and outdoor.

When the Christmas tree comes down, the living room can feel bare and cold, so why not make it feel more homely with some houseplants. They will not only make your living room look and feel more inviting, but they will actually purify the air in your home and remove harmful toxins from the air and convert them into oxygen.

They can also help reduce the humidity levels in the home and reduce the risk of damp and mould growing.

Dracaena (left) is a lovely tall houseplant that has sturdy stems and glossy arching green leaves. Some varieties have very colourful leaves with yellow or red stripes running through them.

It likes a bright, light position out of direct sunlight.

If you are after a table plant or one for the mantlepiece, Maranta, (below) the prayer plant is a great choice. This small foliage plant has beautifully colourful stripy leaves in red green and golden. It is low growing and stays relatively small. It isn’t fussy about position as long as it’s away from cold draughts and hot radiators.

If you aren’t particularly green fingered and worry about keeping a plant alive, then Aspidistra is the plant for you. It’s common name is the ‘Cast Iron Plant’ and that says it all! It’s tough, easy to grow and incredibly difficult to kill. It also loves a shady spot, so will be perfect for those rooms that don’t get much light. All three of these plants are easy to grow and don’t need much attention. Give them a drink about once a week and a house plant feed once a month between March and November and they will thrive.

With January being a colder month with not much happening in the garden, we thought we would tell you about a few of our favourite plants which we have now and they are good for getting in the ground if its not too cold or hard and can bring a bit of colour to the garden at this time of year!

To brighten up a difficult shady area, then try Fatsia Japonica Spider’s Web. It is a new variety with large, leathery,

Give your a ho with these col deeply lobed, hand shaped leaves with a distinctive white variegation that can be speckled or with blotches which are dotted around the leaf margins or through to the centre of the leaf, creating the illusion of a spider’s web (see picture right).

It produces clusters of white flowers in late autumn/winter, followed by black berries, that are great for the birds. It is an extremely low maintenance shrub and highly tolerant of dry shade once it is established. It is a highly architectural plant that looks great in large pots on its own, or as part of a mixed border or woodland garden. It will grow to a height and spread of 2.5m (10ft), but is slow growing and can easily be kept trimmed to size. Plant in a moist, fertile soil for best results.

To brighten up a sunny spot, try Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’ which is a new variety of Mexican Orange Blossom. The foliage is golden yellow in spring, maturing to lime green in winter.

It produces white flowers in spring, early summer, and occasionally in autumn, that are almond scented, attracting bees.

It is beautiful if planted with other darker coloured foliage plants or with plants with contrasting blues and purple flowers. It likes well drained soil in full sun or partial shade and is suitable for a pot or garden. Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’ grows to a height and spread of 1.2m (4ft).

Helleborus x ericsmithii ‘Penny’s Pink’, (pictured above) ‘Molly’s White’, ‘Anna’s Red’ and ‘Angel Glow’ have attractive foliage and pretty flowers. They flower from February through to April and produce an abundance of blooms. Penny’s Pink flowers start off on deep pink stems with maroon buds that open up to reveal dusty pink flowers.

Plant up a winter pot that will Choose Your Pot We like to use a pot that is at least 30cm by 30cm as this is a good size to go by a backdoor or on a step. During spring and summer we use bright, colourful pots and during Autumn/ Winter we like to use the metallics.

Choose Your Compost We recommend using the ‘Container & Basket’ compost if you are uneasy and unsure of mixing your own. Here at the Garden Centre we like to use ‘Jack’s Magic’ or ‘Multipurpose with Added John Innes’ as they are both of excellent quality. We also add slow release fertiliser to them for an extra boost that feeds them all season long.

ouse a treat lourful plants As the flowers develop and fade, they gradually turn to a deeper pink. Molly’s White has flowers that start off with a white flush before gradually turning acid green with age.

Angel Glow has deep pink buds that open up to reveal deep pink flowers streaked with cream. As the flowers age and fade, they turn an almost dusty pink streaked with green.

Unlike traditional hellebores, the flowers on these varieties are much larger and can be as much as 10cm (4ins) across and face outwards and upwards instead of hanging down.

After the flowers on all three have faded, it is important to remove the flowering stalks and any dead or tatty foliage to keep the plants looking their best.

They all have attractive evergreen foliage which is a bonus as it creates interest all year round. The foliage is a pewter green colour with silver veins and mottling.

It really stands out when planted in a slightly shaded position.

The foliage on Anna’s Red and Penny’s Pink is particularly exceptional as the new leaves have pink and red veins as they emerge and mature. To get the best from them, grow them in a moist, humus rich compost that is free draining: they like high fertility, but hate to be waterlogged. They are versatile with regards to planting position as they will thrive in both sun and shade. Growing to a height of 40cm (16ins) with a spread of 40-60cm (16-24ins).

For the spillers, those are the plants that cascade over the edge of the pot. At this time of year the range of plants is limited and we tend to use ivy as it’s hardy, evergreen and reliable. Other plants that can be used are grasses, heucheras or vincas.

Fillers provide the colour that fills the pot. These tend to be bedding plants so at this time of year we use cyclamen or primroses as a strong hint of colour and fill in the gaps with violas, pansies, bellis and cineraria. We also like to stick to some colour themes - pastel shades in pink, purple and white is always a winner while hot colours in red, yellow and orange are a great combination.

At this time of year when your pot is done, give it a good drink with tepid water (so it doesn’t shock the plants) and deadhead when necessary. www.cornerstonevision.com
