Spreading joy at Christmas Plymouth has so much to offer families this festive season - and we’re delighted once again to include a 24-page Christmas guide in this issue.

It’s a handy pull-out supplement which contains all the details about the many events and activities taking place over the next six weeks.

With so many high street retailers facing an uncertain future, it’s a good time to support your local shops - particularly the independent businesses which contribute so much to the economy and life of the city.

Holiday howlers!

Over the years I’ve tried to bring you different holiday lists including the most ‘unusual’ hotels in the world, the ‘best‘ honeymoon destinations and the top ‘bucket list’ holidays, to mention just a few.

This month I thought I‘d share a list of genuine complaints sent to tour operators from disgruntled clients, as supplied by the website Travel Gossip.

Although we receive very few complaints in our agency, I must stress we take them all very seriously. The ones below I feel are

much harder to do so!

“On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don‘t like spicy food.”

“They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach.

It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax.”

“We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

“We booked an excursion to a water park, but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”

“The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room.”

“We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white, but it was more yellow.”

“It‘s lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallata to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time – this should be banned.”

“No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”

“Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen,

there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”

“I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.”

“The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun.”

“It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.”

“I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends‘ three-bedroom, and ours was significantly smaller.”

“The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the resort.’ We‚‘re trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service.”

“When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”

“We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”

“It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel.”

“I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes.”

“My fiancée and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible, and want to be re-reimbursed, for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.”

KF Kitchens make light work of fabulous kitchen

Question: How do you transform a hallway and two small rooms into one stunning kitchen and living space, opening up the fabulous views outside?

Answer: Call in the experts from awardwinning independent Plymouth firm, KF Kitchens, run by Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice.

That’s exactly what Richard and Sarah Ackland did at their beautiful home overlooking the golf course at St Mellion in Cornwall.

“The two rooms that were here before were very small and dark and didn’t make the most of the views,” said Sarah. “We asked them: ‘What can you do to open up those views?’ Our other requirement was that we wanted a nice big space where we could sit as a family with our two boys.”

The firm’s solution was to knock down two walls to make one big room and allow for a huge window stretching almost the length of the room, with steel supports above. The result? An immediate ‘wow’ factor, a room full of light, and much, much more than kitchen.

Sarah says she and Richard had “a vague outline” of what they wanted: “But when we sat down with Nathan and Derinda, it was clear that our outline just wouldn’t work,” she said.

“What they came up with was a much better solution in terms of where everything should go to optimise the space and the views.

Richard and Sarah chose a kitchen from the Burbidge Kew range. The Kew is a fresher, sharper take on the traditional shaker form, with a luxury painted finish that accentuates the Kew door design and reveals the desirable, unique patterning of the solid ash framing.

The range offers bespoke colours and Richard and Sarah chose painted wood in slate and French light grey, on a light oak

coloured carcase with T&G panels on all ends.

The kitchen was completed in June.

“The new kitchen is a great place to sit and socialise with friends. And the design means I can have the boys in here with me while I’m cooking. It’s very family-friendly, which is what we wanted.

“We would happily recommend KF Kitchens to other people.”

LeighAnne writes her story of hope to help bereaved parents The founder of the Little Things & Co baby bereavement charity has written a book to help parents following the loss of a baby. LeighAnne Wright from Plympton has just published Help to Heal, which tells her own story of loss and lists the 10 practical steps she followed to help guide her through her experience.

LeighAnne has lost two babies in her life. In 1982, when she was three-years-old, she lost her brother, Daniel, who died from spinal muscular atrophy, aged eight months. Then, just over 20 years ago, she lost a baby boy, Beau: “He had his life cut tragically short, before it had even begun,” writes LeighAnne in the book. “He was here and gone in the blink of an eye. But nevertheless, he was here. He existed, and I felt that then and every single day since. His conception, pregnancy and death were, for many years, my secret and I told no-one.”

After many years of “muddling through,” and finally reaching “breaking point,” she started to address the loss: “When I sat and stopped, I realised what I wanted was impossible. I couldn’t turn back time, I couldn’t breathe life into that tiny little boy’s body. So what could I do? I asked myself: ‘What exactly is it that you want?’ And it came to me. I wanted to tell people about him. I didn’t want to keep him a secret any longer.

And do you know what? I wanted to live again. I wanted to be happy again.”

LeighAnne told Plymouth Magazine: “After you’ve lost a baby, it’s very chaotic and confusing. You feel closed, you feel guilty for no reason, you feel jealous about other people who have children, and that makes you feel even more guilty.

It’s important to realise that everything you feel is valid. My guide is very structured and focused, and it helped me to heal.

We are all different, and I acknowledge that it won’t be for everyone. But I have written it to give people a bit of hope.”

LeighAnne founded Little Things & Co in 2013, initially to make tiny hand-crafted clothing for ‘angel babies’ who had died very prematurely. The first gown she made was for a local family who could find no suitably-sized clothing for their baby to wear at the funeral. For LeighAnne, who works as a funeral director at Walter Parsons in Plympton, it brought difficult memories to the surface: “It reflected my own experience.

When I had my loss, it was like baby loss didn’t exist, so the help was non-existent.”

The demand for the angel clothing soon grew and became nationwide, not just from families but from hospitals, too.

LeighAnne took on a voluntary team of experienced crafters, knitters and sewers – ‘The ‘Angel Army’ – to make the specialist clothing, to allow her to take care of the admin.

The charity now has seven trustees, and a band of local fundraising supporters: “Plymouth is great for getting behind a cause,” said LeighAnne, who also gets a helping hand from her husband Matt and her teenage daughter Lucy.

In response to the obvious need, Little Things & Co has expanded the range of services it offers to families who have suffered baby loss from gestation age up to toddler age: “When I started making the clothing I saw the big gaps in support,” explained LeighAnne. “So in 2014, we set up the support group. It’s lovely to see people become the best of friends through this – it’s one of the things that gives me most pride.”

The charity reaches an average 40,000 people each week.

FOOD MATTERS Plymouth Market is rapidly gaining a reputation as the go-to venue for a growing range of eateries and other specialist food businesses.

Plymouth's number one restaurant on TripAdvisor @Kitchen is a firm favourite for diners at Plymouth Market, and a number of new eateries have opened this year to add to the tasty food on offer.

In the summer, Pond Hosakun, the master chef behind @Kitchen launched a second business called Tea & Bun. Pond had been looking to extend her Far Eastern offering to the discerning foodies of Plymouth and came up with a great new venue and mix of delicious food and drinks to eat in or take away.

Tea & Bun is situated in one of the Market’s Cornwall Street shops and can be accessed straight from the Market or from the street. Newly spruced up with a funky urban theme, the café offers tasty Asian treats such as steamed buns, stuffed with a mouth-watering range of fillings suitable for both meat eaters and veggies and, of course, the intriguing sounding bubble tea.

So what is bubble tea?

Usually made from a base of tea, (green or black) bubble Pond Hosakun from tea is created by adding milk, @Kitchen and Tea & Bun sugar and the ‘bubbles’, such as popping boba – round balls full of fruit or syrup flavours.

Usually served cold, the fun is all about trying different combinations and creating your favourite blend.

Pond said: "Tea & Bun is all about giving more choice to customers. As well as filled steamed Harita Buns we offer ramen noodles in broth and different savoury snacks from fried gyoza to takoyaki (squid balls). There are gluten free and vegan options too.

“The menu is small but varied. By keeping it small we can make everything fresh, as quality and taste is so important to us. It will be a great place for families as there’s something for everyone.”

The Market’s food offering has been steadily growing over the last 12 months since the £3.2 million refit was finished and it’s fast becoming the venue to try out new cuisine ideas, both for entrepreneurs and diners.

Stews on offer include pork and veg, curried beef, Moroccan lamb with vegetables, pork and apple and chilli with sweet potato. His daily menu can be found on Facebook.

Ewan also sells milkshakes, nachos and hot drinks. He can be found at stall 131 in the Market.

Latvian-born Natali Neringa opened her FroYo Island business in Market Avenue in the summer, convinced that it was exactly what Plymouth needed.

Natali, who lives in St Budeaux, said: "Frozen yoghurt is hugely popular all around the world - especially in the USA. My kids love it and I was convinced that people in Plymouth would love it too.

"Lots of towns and cities in the UK have frozen yoghurt shops and I had always been Natalia Neringa from surprised that Plymouth didn't Froyo Island have one. So I decided to do something about it," said Natalie.

She enjoyed an extremely busy summer thanks to the hot weather and has built up a regular clientele who enjoy the desserts with a range of toppings.

Natali prepares a wide range of soft fruit flavoured frozen yoghurts, including red orange, pina colada, blue bubblegum, as well as the traditional flavours such as peach, green apple and cherry.

She points out that her frozen yoghurt is healthier than

Natali has also introduced vegan shakes, plus hot drinks with waffles and frozen yoghurt. With winter fast approaching she will be offering a range of hot pies to accompany her frozen yoghurts.

Plymouth Arts Centre to clo home is found for its popu Plymouth Arts Centre’s unique independent cinema is moving to a new home and doubling in size. This follows several months of discussions in the wake of the news that the Arts Centre itself will be closing because of the withdrawal of Arts Council funding.

The new 118-seat auditorium is to be built in Plymouth College of Art and will open to the public in January.

Chair of Plymouth Arts Centre’s Board of Trustees, Andrew Brewerton, said: “Moving from the Looe Street address is emotional for many people, but the fact is that it is no longer fit for purpose. Audiences are the heart of Plymouth Arts Centre and the thing that drives it forward.

“It will continue to be run by Plymouth Arts Centre’s Cinema programmer Anna Navas and the team from Plymouth Arts Centre, who will take special care to bring the quality and breadth of films, friendly atmosphere and grown-up cinema experience with them.”

The 61-seat cinema in Looe Street enjoyed a record year in 2017, with nearly 18,000 admissions across 135 films.

Its live event cinema, film festival, and regular talks by internationally renowned film makers such as director Ben Wheatley, and Oscar winners Roger Deakins and Mia Bays continue to build in popularity.

Plymouth Arts Centre recently showcased yet another sellout summer season of Open Air Cinema at iconic waterfront locations, Tinside Lido, Mount Edgcumbe and Royal William Yard and plans to continue to do so in the future.

Tim Bolton, vice principal at Plymouth College of Art, said: “Plymouth College of Art shares many fundamental values with Plymouth Arts Centre and we have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship spanning numerous years.

We welcome this opportunity to continue to collaborate with them, to enrich the arts and cultural fabric of the South West.

Until Dec 22 PLYMOUTH – FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION House of Fraser, 5th Floor, 40-46 Royal Parade, Plymouth PL1 1DY Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a major target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians.

Amongst this charred and ruined city, a radical new plan was developed to enable its complete redesign and reconstruction. MPs, Councillors and planners sought out the finest architects, designers and artists to create a new city – a modern city – worthy of replacing what had been lost. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of this post-war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collections of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explore the themes of destruction and reconstruction. The title of the show has been inspired by the diverse, transdisciplinary, nature of the students’ practice. It references the adaptability, elasticity and acceleration they show in negotiating change and innovation: taking charge of the ‘frequency dial’ and embracing progress, understanding how to make it their own.

They have also taken the initiative in introducing younger audiences to independent cinema by introducing a popular £4 ticket price for those aged 25 and under.

But the withdrawal of the Arts Council England’s funding for the Arts Centre in April 2018 put extreme pressure on all areas of the charity’s organisation. The new plans are the result of months of work by the Board of Trustees and partners to create a sustainable future for the organisation.

The Board took the difficult decision to sell the Arts Centre’s Looe Street building. The resources are not in place to continue to deliver both the cinema and the visual arts programme, and given the current circumstances, the Trustees have reluctantly reached an unavoidable decision to halt the visual arts programme for the time being.

PAC Home, the centre’s highly regarded network of artists and arts professionals, is developing plans to continue independently.

KF Kitchens all set for a Merry Christmas and an exciting 2019 It’s that time of year when families everywhere begin to wish they had a bit more living space in their kitchens and when mums and dads are hoping that their appliances stand up to the big Christmas challenge.

It’s one of the reasons why, when some businesses are preparing to take their foot off the gas for the festive holidays, Plymouth’s award-winning KF Kitchens will still be welcoming visitors to their showroom at Faraday Mill in Cattedown throughout December.

The independent family firm is run by its three directors, Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice – all of them keen cooks. Derinda said: “Christmas really brings home to a lot of people just how important their kitchen is. It’s not just about having reliable appliances. More than anything, it’s about having the space where people can come together and have a lovely time.”

KF Kitchens are hosting a NEFF Christmas-themed Cooking Day on December 8, with morning and afternoon events for existing and new customers to see appliances in action and get advice on how to use their oven to the max on Christmas Day. The event caps a hugely successful year, which saw KF Kitchens win a national industry award and a host of glowing reviews. The firm was named Studio Partner

of the Year by German company, Häfele, in recognition of its “consistent business excellence, fantastic customer service and commitment to quality”.

Another cause for celebration in 2018 was the firm’s 10th anniversary. In those 10 years, KF Kitchens have completed over 1,000 projects and received more than 150 ‘thank you’ cards from happy customers – the latest one arrived on the morning of the Plymouth Magazine photo-shoot!

Between them, Derinda, Nathan and Simon have over 65 years of experience in the business – and they’re still as passionate as ever about their work. They are eagerly making plans for 2019 and gearing up for a busy New Year.

So what can people expect from a KF Kitchens experience?

And what makes it so unique? Nathan explained: “Often, when people visit us in the showroom, they feel completely ‘kitchened out’ because they’re already bogged down with all the finer details. We cut out all the noise and get straight to the fundamentals.

These are: Where do you cook? How do you cook?

What are the costs?

“Deciding where the hob should go, that’s the starting point. Everything follows on from that. It’s not about ‘will that cabinet fit there’, it’s about recognising the bigger picture and how the space works for you. This initial meeting only takes 20 to 30 minutes and in that time, we can give our customers an

They don’t have to spend hours and hours listening to sales talk.

We’re kitchen designers, not sales people.

“Only after we establish the fundamentals do we then turn to things like colour, materials, and design. It’s a journey. And once a customer has decided they want us to be on their journey, we will usually spend 15 to 20 hours with them getting everything right.

“We are also unique in that we’ll challenge our customers’ ideas,” added Nathan. “We don’t allow them to make a mistake. For example, why would you necessarily choose flooring right at the start? Why wouldn’t you wait until you see the kitchen and then decide what’s right? Our role is to guide our customers to make choices that are right for their space and their lifestyle.

“Some things are no brainers, so we’ll guide them to eye level cooking and refrigeration and slide-and-hide ovens.

Why add to the noise by showing them options you know aren’t right for them? Yes, options are good – but only if they’re right. It’s about being transparent at all times so the customer can make educated choices. With our projects, we will future-proof their kitchen spaces for 15 to 20 years.”

For home-owners with kitchens that pre-date the kitchen ‘revolution’ of 2011-12, now is a perfect time to invest: “Apart from some technology and gadgetry, kitchens won’t really be changing much now because we’ve gone through that major revolution.

“After around 2012, kitchens became a totally different entity. It was like an explosion. Suddenly we had NEFF slideand-hide ovens, Quartz solid work surfaces, made-to-size

doors, induction hobs, Quooker instant hot water taps, curves, handle-less units, concealed accessories – it all changed.”

The biggest change, says Nathan, is how home-owners are again making the kitchen space the focal point of their homes: “We’ve basically taken a wall out, because for many years, a kitchen was always a separate room. Now, it has been opened up and is the centre of the home, which if you think about it, was always how it used to be – a place where families would gather. People are buying a project, a living space, and not products like cupboards and units.

“A new kitchen changes people’s lives,” he added. “It changes how you interact and how you live in that space when you’re cooking. You need people who care about your project, not sales people. We want all our customers to go out and tell everyone what a great experience it was and that they enjoyed taking the journey with us.”

In 2019, KF Kitchens will be continuing to raise money for local causes, including Macmillan Cancer Support. A second coffee morning is planned, after this year’s raised £560. And next summer, Derinda is doing a 23-mile hike in one day around the Jurassic Coast to raise money for the charity – she has a Just Giving page, kfkitchens2019, for those who wish to donate.

Trevi House celebrates 25 years of supporting women and changing lives Families, colleagues, volunteers and charity supporters, from all over the country gathered together to hear and share stories of hope and courage, as part of an evening of celebration to mark 25 years of local women’s charity, Trevi House.

The room at PL1, was filled with laughter, smiles and tears, as women and their families reunited and reminisced about their time at the Plymouth-based drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation centre, which works exclusively with mothers and their children.

Launched in 1993, Trevi House remains the only service of its kind in the UK. Something the charity and the mums would like to see change and are fighting to make happen.

Opening the evening, Hannah Shead, chief executive of Trevi House, said: “We are unique and I am proud of the fact we are unique. But there is something sad that we are the only provision of our kind. We know that in this country every 16 minutes, a child is taken into care. Yet, there is only one Trevi House.

“We’ve survived 25 years and this is down to the sheer grit, belief and determination of the people involved with Trevi but I think also we have a constant reminder of why we do what we do. It’s not always easy, at times, it’s very challenging

but anyone looking around the room tonight can be given a reminder of why we are still fighting to have a service that keeps mothers and their children together.”

The special event was attended by current and former residents, who all spoke highly of the care and treatment they have received or are receiving.

“It means the world to me; they’ve really helped me get off methadone, they’ve sorted my issues out,” explained 27-year-old, Denise, who is currently a resident at Trevi House. “It’s still ongoing but it’s given me a second chance in life. It’s given me my baby back. I think there needs to be a lot more of these all around the world – that’s how massive I want it to be.”

Denise’s sentiments were echoed by Cali, who shared her story about being able to stay with her son at Trevi House and receive treatment for her addiction, more than 20 years ago. Cali now has three more children, has gained her degree, got married, is in a job she loves and is living her ‘dream life’.

“I really don’t believe, I would be alive today if it wasn’t for Trevi House. It’s a truly special place, but let’s not underestimate how difficult the process is of going through the treatment. It’s a really difficult time but, at the same time, it’s a really transforming time as well. A lot of growth, a lot of pain, is faced; you have to look at your demons. In order to

Trevi House “I remember when I first arrived, a lady called Roma French was running Trevi House. I remember saying to her the amount of money it costs to remove my son and put him in care compared with the costs to do rehab with him, the figures just don’t add up and it doesn’t make sense.”

In addition to Cali’s powerful speech guests also heard from current and former colleagues and volunteers and were shown a video of two of the former children of Trevi House. Now grown up, Jasmine and Aisha spoke on a film produced by Jasmine called ‘Trevi House: Where Life Began…’ about their experiences of living at Trevi House with their mums. Their video was followed by a powerful rendition of ‘Never Enough’, performed by recent resident, Natalie.

As the evening drew to a close, the words of Trevi’s Patron, Jenny Molloy, was ringing through everyone’s ears as she described why she not only felt privileged to be asked to be the first Patron of Trevi House but also the difference it had made to her own life.

“I said I wasn’t going to take on another Patron role and then Hannah found me and Trevi found me and I was absolutely bowled over by the magic that happens in Trevi House and something special happened to me. I didn’t know mums could

recover, I didn’t know it could happen.

Mums lose their babies and then get them back and get into recovery and go on to be successful, independent, amazing women. I just never knew it was possible. When I came to Trevi I saw that and I see it with all the amazing women I am seeing it every single time.

Two months ago I contacted my mum because I just wanted to be friends and create a different ending. I found out she’s five years in recovery; she’s five years clean at 80 years old. If I had not been with Trevi, and the magic Trevi brings, I would never have contacted her.

“We’ve only got one Trevi; thank God we’ve got a Trevi. But we wouldn’t have Trevi if it wasn’t for all of the staff. The staff are absolutely unbelievable.”

The microphone was handed back to Hannah, for the closing speech of the evening. She shared with the families and guests Trevi’s continued commitment to reach more families, to continue to change public perception, to use their collective experience to make change, as well as provide news of the charity’s plans for the future and the developments of the Sunflower Centre and its latest project called Pause.

“We have a message of hope; we have a message that says the right support can create change. We want to change more lives and that is what we are going to be working to do in the future.”

The Pearn was built in 1892 for Edwin Alonso Pearn and opened its doors in 1895, serving as a convalescent home for 108 years before its closure in 2003. Pearn was a Plymothian, born in Devonport in 1822. After his education, he became an apprentice wholesale draper in Plymouth, becoming a partner in a company of drapers and woollen warehousemen in Exeter before retiring in 1873. During his working life Edwin acquired a large fortune and was a significant benefactor of local charities. He commissioned the building as a convalescent home for patients recovering from serious illness.

In later years The Pearn was used as a day care centre for St Luke's Hospice and as regional offices for several other charities.

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre As we head towards the Big Day, finding that perfect Christmas gift can feel like an enormous task.

You want something special, heartfelt, that shows you put effort into the gift. Some people are easy to buy for, but others…well, others can keep us awake at night!

We believe plants make the best gifts for anyone. There are plants that require minimal effort, to ones for the experienced gardener and everyone in between. So, if you are stuck for that perfect present, take a look at our guide below.

For Children

bedroom to clean the air, it’s one of the few houseplants safe for humans, cats and dogs too. They come ready to hang or chose your own pot for that personal touch!

My most memorable gift I received as a child was a small Venus Fly Trap. The way the leaves closed when touched fascinated me and inspired a lifelong love of plants. I would sit and wait for a fly, often dropping ones in myself just to watch it close.

My love of carnivorous plants lasted through the years and I find it extremely exciting that they are becoming so popular!

We have my favourite ones, Nepenthes (the Monkey Cup) and Drosera (Sundews) in stock, as well as the fly trap. Both these varieties catch more flies than a Venus Fly Trap and are so unusual they are guaranteed to fascinate a child in the same way the fly trap inspired me!

While they do require some care (Nepenthes need regular misting and Sundews like to be boggy) it can be a fun way for children and parents to spend time together learning about how to look after a living thing! Choose a fun pot cover, and there is your unusual gift for a child.

For the Indoor Gardener

For the Non-Gardener

The Cactus. Don’t be fooled by its prickly appearance. Cacti have become a symbol of endurance; not just surviving but thriving in an environment where most could not. An increasingly popular houseplant that grows better with neglectful care and comes in many varieties.

Pick your own pot cover, pick the cactus you like and voila! In two steps you have a gift that you chose and put together yourself - symbolises that person’s strength and determination, and you don’t even have to wrap it (unless they want a prickly surprise!).

The amateur gardener usually has a ‘growing’ garden (pardon the pun), they are still in the process of learning, and the garden doesn’t yet have a set structure.

The summer garden is usually well arranged, but they are lacking with spring colour. We often find that they choose the cheaper plants, worried that it won’t survive with their perceived lack of skills. A perfect setting to gift a larger plant!

We would suggest the ‘Wine and Roses Rhododendron’.

Often given as a gift, this unusual, compact and evergreen plant has its roots traced back to Perth, Scotland, meaning it can handle any weather England can throw at it! Easy to grow, a lovely way to bring colour to the Spring Garden and a thoughtful gift too that will bring smiles for years.

For the Health Conscious

For Experienced Gardener

The Spider Plant, or Chlorophytum. Declared by NASA as the number one plant for keeping air clean on the Space Station, it does the same in the home by increasing oxygen and decreasing carbon monoxide levels, allergens, mould spores, bacteria and more.

It is a houseplant and again perfect for the non-gardener since it is extremely hard to kill a Spider Plant! Hang from the ceiling, or let it trail over a sideboard. Also great for a baby’s

The Amaryllis. A popular bulb grown indoors at this time of the year, but did you know that they can be grown hydroponically (in water without soil), just like a hyacinth but without the six to eight weeks of keeping it in a cupboard!

Choose a vase, or any clear vessel big enough for the bulb, choose a stone or pebble, fill the vase with your chosen aggregate at the bottom and around the roots on the bulb and tie with a bow. If you want to grow it for a while first you can fill it with water, or if you are gifting it soon, the recipient can fill with water themselves.

A handmade gift, rewarding for the recipient as they last for weeks, does it get any more personable than creating your own gift? Pot up a few spares for those people who give you a gift when you weren’t expecting it. If you don’t use them, they will still flower in your own home!

For the New or Amateur Gardener

This gardener will have an established garden, and often wouldn’t really appreciate trying to find a spot for a large plant (there often won’t be one, since dormant plants are resting under the surface). So, unless they have specifically asked for a large plant, don’t do it!

• Plant bare-root roses, and other deciduous plants or ornamental trees.

• Prune your wisteria, climbing roses and acers (make acers the priority as they will ‘bleed’ sap if it is done any later).

• Move containers to a more sheltered area. Grouping them tightly together can help keep them warmer. Put them on pot stands or bricks to prevent waterlogging.

• Tulips can still be planted now as long as the ground isn’t frozen.

• Harvest any remaining root crops such as sprouts or parsnips.

• Protect garden ponds from completely freezing over by putting some rubber balls on the surface of the water.

When it does freeze, remove the balls and there will be airholes for the fish!

• If you are propagating perennials, fleshy rooted species such as phlox lend themselves well to root cuttings.

• Fruit trees can be pruned now, but avoid pruning stone fruit, since it can cause the plant to take in the airborne fungus silver-leaf. team have a vast amount of knowledge, so if you aren’t sure which plants to choose, they can advise you. This is a great idea for men particularly, it is a lovely way to show how much you care about them, and you may find it takes pride of place by the front door (yes, I am talking from experience!).
