Could it be Sepsis?

Sepsis is a worldwide phenomenon and a leading cause of preventable death. Every year in the UK there are over 150,000 cases of sepsis resulting in 44,000 deaths (1,000 of which are children), which is more than the deaths from bowel cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer combined¹. Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition triggered by an infection or injury. The body’s Rachel Eyre immune system goes into overdrive as it tries to fight an infection. This can reduce the blood supply to vital organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys. Without quick treatment sepsis can lead to tissue damage, multiple organ failure and death.

Sepsis is a medical emergency. Individuals who develop sepsis often become desperately ill very quickly. Up to 80% of patients survive sepsis and most will return to a normal or near normal life within 18 months of being ill.

Not every infection will develop into sepsis, however, any infection can develop into sepsis . Sepsis is indiscriminate and can affect the young and old and previously fit and healthy.

Earlier identification and treatment across the UK would save 14,000 lives each year. To that end it is vital that public awareness and that of health professionals is increased.

The UK Sepsis Trust advocates that a simple question could save a life – Just Ask “Could it be Sepsis?”

People with sepsis can present with various signs and symptoms. Suspecting sepsis is a first major step towards early recognition and diagnosis. Sepsis can initially look like flu, gastroenteritis or a chest infection.

Any child who has the following symptoms might have sepsis: 1. Is breathing very fast 2. Has a ‘fit’ or convulsion

3. Looks mottled, bluish or pale 4. Has a rash that does not fade when you press it 5. Is very lethargic or difficult to wake 6. Feels abnormally cold to touch Call 999 and ask: could it be sepsis?

Sepsis Symptoms in Adults: S Shivering, fever or very cold E Extreme pain or general discomfort P Pale or discoloured skin S Sleepy, difficult to rouse, confused I It feels like you’re dying S Short of breath If caught within the first hour, a junior healthcare professional using just basic healthcare equipment can double a patient’s chances of survival. High-flow oxygen, broad spectrum antibiotics and intravenous fluids are required and are commonplace in all Accident & Emergency departments.

The UK Sepsis Trust are campaigning so that by 2020 we can save 14,000 more lives every year if everyone just asked ‘could it be sepsis?’

There have been lots of activities locally and nationally to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS. It’s difficult to imagine what life would be like without the NHS - it is certainly our most precious asset and the envy of many other countries.

With more than one million employees in England and a budget of over £120 billion, it contributes so much to the fabric of our society and our local community.

There have been lots of awards made to NHS staff as part of the NHS 70th anniversary and we’re delighted to report on the success of Sian Dennison, a longserving nurse at Derriford - you can read her story on pages 46 and 47.

I seem to have spent more time at Derriford in the last year than ever… mainly due to my husband dislocating his ankle last summer and my dad having a couple of spells in hospital through ill health this year and another close friend expecting her first baby.

I must say all my experiences (apart from trying to find somewhere to park!) have been positive…everything from the quality of communication and the helpfulness of staff, doctors and other medical personnel.

Yes, I might have had to wait longer than expected on occasions, but by and large it’s all been good.

I recognise, however, that there are many people who have had to wait - and continue to wait - longer for treatment or operations than they should. Sadly, the NHS remains under constant pressure partly because we are all living longer and also exacerbated by the closure of GP surgeries in the city.

As a result there always seems to be a shortage of beds and not enough places for patients leaving hospital who need ongoing care. New schemes, such as Home from Hospital, are being introduced in different parts of the country. The scheme provides accommodation with families for older patients who need some ongoing care and support.

Let’s hope a similar scheme can be introduced in Plymouth so that urgently-needed bed space can be released for people needing treatment.

New treatment centre for St John Ambulance

St John Ambulance volunteers from all over Plymouth have celebrated the delivery of a new vehicle.

The treatment centre is one of more than 50 vehicles secured thanks to a capital grant to the Order of St John by the Mark Master Masons through their Mark Benevolent Fund.

A donation of over £3 million is providing new ambulances, treatment centres and support vehicles to St John Ambulance – the nation’s leading first aid charity and the Order’s operational arm.

Vehicles are being handed over in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands throughout 2018.

And Buckfast Abbey was the scene of the latest unveiling, with a dedication ceremony conducted by the Order’s County Chaplain, Rev David Gill, and an awards presentation at the beginning of July.

The new vehicle will be used by Devon’s volunteers to help them deliver first aid to members of the public at events across the county and further afield.

Roger Jacob, chair of St John’s Devon County Priory Group, said: "The donation of this vehicle is wonderful news for the county; it will significantly help enhance patient care and contribute to more lives saved locally.

"We’re immensely grateful to the Mark Master Masons and to the Mark Benevolent Fund for their generosity and we look forward to seeing the positive use made by local St John Ambulance volunteers of the vehicle in the future as they continue the charity’s life saving mission.’

Also present at the celebrations were Surgeon Rear Admiral Lionel Jarvis CBE DL KStJ, Prior of The Order of St John’s Priory of England and the Islands, and David Fursdon Esq, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Devon.

You get a good idea of Gillian Nair’s positive ‘let’s do it’ attitude from the way she answers the very first question with: 'Why not?!'

The question? “So, why did you set up Plymouth Gossip Girls?”

If you’re a woman and you live in or near Plymouth, the chances are that you’re a member of Plymouth Gossip Girls.

At the last count, there were 47,334 members of the closed group on Facebook – and the number is growing by the day.

Given that Gillian is a mum of two young children, has a part-time job and that administering the page is a labour of love performed free of charge by the Gossip Girls team, the question 'Why?' didn’t seem so daft.

The truth is, Gillian never expected it to become this big.

Now that it has, it’s a great source of pride for the whole team – and they’re loving it! The Gossip Girls crew has grown to nine: Admins Gillian, Sara Nicholls and Sam Dorrall, and moderators Laura Rattray, Beckie Farr, Jessie Blackler, Christina Hudson-Farley, Becky Kent-Clare and Roxanne Thorne.

Today, five of them – Gillian, Sara, Sam, Laura and Beckie – are sitting in a café overlooking the Sound, discussing how and why Plymouth Gossip Girls has made such a massive connection with so many women in the city.

It’s no coincidence that quite a few of the team have returned to Plymouth after spending some time away. In fact, it answers the question as to why Gillian set up Plymouth Gossip Girls two years ago: “I’m from Plymouth, I was living in London with my husband, and there were similar groups in the south east. But there was nothing like it down here, somewhere you could go for a general chat.”

Gillian went to Hele’s School in Plympton and had an existing network of family and friends in the city. When she set up the group, she had every intention of ‘inviting’ them to join. But then: “I thought ‘this won’t take off, people will think I’m mad’. So I just let it sit there for a few months, with no

“But Facebook started to change. People were looking to connect with other people, not just family and friends.”

And she took encouragement from friends like Sam: “When Gillian came to me and said: ‘I’ve got an idea, do you think it will work?’ I said: ‘Facebook is life! Yeah, absolutely it’ll work’.”

So Gillian took the plunge, put the page live – and waited.

She didn’t have to wait long: “We had 1,000 members overnight and 5,000 within a week.”

Membership is restricted to those identifying as female. As long as you abide by the strict rules on conduct, anyone is welcome: “We’ve got members from teenagers to women in their 80s, and from all walks of life,” said Sam. Topics of conversation cover most things, from health and beauty, TV, music, and local recommendations. All posts are pre-moderated and Sam said: “It’s never become a nasty place, ever. There is the occasional bun fight, but we jump in quickly when that happens. And other members are quick to alert us.”

The group has also helped people feeling depressed and lonely to make friends and develop a busy social life.

The community group is among the biggest of its kind in the UK and the interaction on it has led Facebook bosses in San Francisco to sit up and take notice. Sara explained: “Of the 47,000 members, 44,000 are active, which means they’re contributing with comments and responses. We have an average of 500 posts a day. When women are added to the group, they stay and actively take part.”

Now, Facebook have contacted Gillian to learn how she grew the group and developed its public image and brand.

One of the unexpected benefits of Gossip Girls is how recommendations in the group has boosted local businesses: “We’ve had quite a lot contact us to say ‘thank you, you’ve made a big difference’,” said Gillian. “For example, the CEO of Veg-in-a-Box told us it has really taken off in the Plymouth area and that it’s all down to us. They’ve had to take on more staff to cope with the demand that we’ve created, which is amazing.”

The group’s rules allow local businesses to post on the 1st of every month, while charity and event posts are restricted to Sundays and selling posts to the 15th of every month.

Charities are benefiting from the group, too. A Gossip Girls JustGiving page raised over £12,000 last year for local causes including Children’s Hospice South West, St Luke’s Hospice, Derriford Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Little Things & Co, and for the families of three young men who died in an accident on the A38.

The women talk about ‘life before Gossip Girls’ – but for them, there’s no going back, just looking forward: “We’ve built this into something fantastic and we want to carry on building it,” said Gillian.

They plan do more giveaways on their accompanying Facebook and Instagram pages which are open to everyone.

And Sara recently did the group’s first live streaming at an event – Plymouth Flavour Fest: “We love Plymouth and we want to go to more events and give them a bit more exposure. I went to Canada for a while and you really appreciate Plymouth if you’ve been away,” she added.

So, what have they learnt about Plymouth women? “The ones who are active on Gossip Girls are fun, outgoing, talkative, generous, confident – and not afraid to say what they think,” said Sam. And Gillian added: “Gossip Girls is just a reflection of Plymouth. It’s like a village really, everyone seems to know everyone. It’s unique in that sense. If you tried to set this up in some places, it wouldn’t take off because there aren’t many places with the same sense of community spirit that we have in Plymouth.”

BUSINESS MATTERS Paul and Ed Bird

Bird Sunglasses – the stylish shades that are bringing light to Africa Blocking out harmful rays for their wearers, while harnessing the power of the sun to change lives in Africa … a range of award-winning sunglasses launched by brothers Ed and Paul Bird aren’t designed just to look good, but to do good, too.

Bird Sunglasses has teamed up with the charity, SolarAid, so that every pair of sunnies sold contributes towards providing solar light for families in rural Malawi, Uganda and Zambia.

Paul, 29, from Lipson, is a graduate from Plymouth University and one of the founders of Elixel, which develops apps and websites. Ed is a director at Devon-based charity, Inspirational Children in Education.

But Bird Sunglasses is even more of a family affair, because their other two brothers, Lawrence and William, are involved with designing the glasses and branding, while Ed’s wife Sarah helps with copy-writing and marketing. She also came up with the tagline ‘Share Your Sun’.

The shades are already turning heads in the fashion world.

Within months of their launch last year, The Independent named them in the top 15 sunglasses.

The firm also won Crowdfunder UK Best Idea in Fashion in 2017 and came second in Santander’s Entrepreneurship Award Scheme After initially launching as an online business, Ed and Paul are now expanding by supplying retail outlets – the Eden Project is the latest to stock Bird Sunglasses. The

brand has several ranges, all made as sustainably as possible with materials such as wood, aluminium, cotton-based acetate, and bamboo. Bespoke prescription shades are also available to order.

So, how did the idea for Bird Sunglasses come about? Ed explained: “As a group of brothers growing up, we’ve always been very close, building things and often destroying things, as boys do! We’ve always said: 'Wouldn't it be great to do something together’?”

The ‘light-bulb’ moment came when Ed was visiting America and accidentally broke two pairs of sunglasses: “I couldn’t repair them because of how they were made. So I came back and looked at making sunglasses that were sustainable and repairable. I did some research and there are some companies around the world that are making wooden sunglasses. But coming from a family of designers and artists, we knew we could create a range that combined sustainability with cool, designer aesthetic.”

They also wanted to put major brands in the shade when it comes to having a social purpose: “We had this vision of doing something meaningful, something to be really proud of,” said Paul. “So the business had to be purposeful. I think that's a really nice goal to have, to want to make a difference.”

And they are making a difference, too, on a continent where almost 600 million people have no access to electricity and are forced to use potentially hazardous kerosene lamps.

So far, the lights distributed from sales have reached 870 people, saved 212 tonnes of CO2, and given 201,177 hours of extra study time. Families reached to date will save a total of £29,026, over the three-year lifespan of one light.

“Solar-Aid have some great case studies where villages that were totally reliant on fossil fuels are now 100% solarsufficient,” said Ed. “It's a massive success story.”

But the lamps do more than offer clean light for up to eight hours each night. They also create microbusinesses attached to schools and local businesses, where trained workers can repair lamps that break.

The brothers work with three trusted manufacturers who make the frames, lenses and the hand-made cases. Prices range from £65 - £140. Top of the range is Strata, made with a combination of bamboo, aluminium and wood – either beech, cherry or sandalwood.

At the other end of the range, the bamboo sunglasses can float – “great when you're surfing!” said Ed. He explained how their launch was boosted by three unexpected sources: “We hadn't intended to do a Crowdfunder, but they contacted us and told us they had a fashion-themed competition. We won it and they gave us £1,000 towards a £10,000 campaign, which we exceeded and are very grateful for.”

Meanwhile, through Plymouth University, Paul entered them in the Santander Entrepreneurship award scheme: "We came second, in a field of 2,000 businesses nationally,"

he said. “That secured us £10,000 of business support.

And apart from the manufacturing, we’ve done everything ourselves – with a little help from some talented and creative friends, like our models and photographers!”

Then came the plaudit from The Independent: "We were placed alongside brands like Ray-Ban,” said Paul. “It was amazing.”

After a dream start, the brothers are hoping to grow the business in the next 18 months by securing more retail outlets and increasing production. And a children's range may also be in the pipeline.

They’re also signing up some celebrity fans – singer Joss Stone is among those who wear Bird Sunglasses: "We're really stoked to see Joss wearing them and it would be great to see other big names wearing them too,” said Ed. “Watch this space.”

And he added: “Our ambition is for our sunglasses to be as recognisable as brands like Ray-Ban. What a lot of people don't realise is that 95% of the major brands are all owned by the same company. So making an impact in that market is a challenge – but it's an opportunity too. Our brand is distinct, familyowned and inclusive – everyone’s welcome to join our flock.”

Get drawn to wildlife art at Dartmoor Zoo this summer Visitors to Dartmoor Zoo in Sparkwell will get the chance to take part in a series of pop-up wildlife art workshops in August, under the expert tuition of professional artists from the Tamar Valley-based group, Drawn to the Valley.

The workshops are taking place on four Wednesdays in August, running alongside an exhibition of wildlife art by Drawn to the Valley artists.

It’s a chance for children and adults alike to get a close-up view of some of the creatures at the attraction, which was the inspiration behind the Hollywood movie, We Bought A Zoo. Coral Jonas The children’s workshops on August 1 and 15 are being held in the education room adjoining the Jaguar Restaurant, where the exhibition will be taking over one of the walls from 26 July to August 31.

Youngsters will be able to ‘meet’ one or two of the animals in the Close Encounters room, which might be a chameleon, a tortoise, a stick insect, one of the brightlycoloured exotic frogs, a lizard, a Saharan Yellow Uromastyx – or maybe even a snake. Artefacts such as skulls, skeletons and peacock feathers will also be ‘models’ for the art work.

The workshops are suitable for children up to the age of 11-12. The

adults’ workshops on August 8 and 22 will be held in a room in a quiet spot at the top of the zoo site.

The idea for the exhibition and workshops came from one of the volunteers at the zoo, Paul Kemp, from Plymouth. Paul is also an artist with Drawn to the Valley and will be leading the adult workshops.

The collaboration follows a series of drawing days held by the group at the zoo – some of the results of these drawing days will be on view in the exhibition.

For one of the tutors at the children’s workshops, the project has evoked memories of her years living and working as a wildlife artist in Africa. Drawn to the Valley artist Nicky Beaumont was born in Kenya and grew up in Tanzania, where the abundant local wildlife featured in many of her early paintings.

She’s looking forward to introducing art to the zoo’s young visitors: “Most children love drawing and love animals and these workshops bring the two together. It’s a lovely combination and I think we’ll be kept quite busy!

For the younger children, we’ll have animal face masks for them to colour in, so there will be plenty of drawing opportunities for everyone to get involved in.”

Artist Mary Harold will also be tutoring at the children’s workshop:

“It’s going to be a lot of fun. They can come in and meet some of the little creatures and after they’ve done their drawings, we’re going to hang them up on a line to dry out. By the time they come back after seeing all the animals in the zoo, the drawings will be ready for them to take home.

“We’re hoping it will inspire them to draw some of the other animals while they’re at the zoo.”

Dartmoor Zoo is the biggest big cat zoo in the South West, with tigers, lions, cheetahs, jaguar and lynx. It became famous around the world following the Hollywood movie, We Bought a Zoo, starring Matt Damon. The film is based on the true story written by the zoo’s owner, Ben Mee. The zoo achieved charity status in 2014, when it became Dartmoor Zoological Society.

Head of Discovery, Learning and Research at Dartmoor Zoo, Coral Jonas, said the link-up with Drawn to the Valley is part of the venue’s push to showcase local artists: “This is Drawn to the Valley’s first exhibition here and we’re really pleased to be hosting it. It fits in with what we’re looking to do, which is provide a space and an opportunity for local talent.

“And we think the children’s pop-up workshops will prove very popular. Mums and dads can sit and have a coffee while the children are just next door, having a great time.”

Drawn to the Valley is an art collective boasting more than 150 members. A dozen are taking part in the exhibition and there will be around 50 paintings on show – some of them based on the zoo’s own inhabitants such as Tibo and Baro the cheetahs and Dragan and Alisha the Amur tigers.

The art group is also behind Plymouth Art Trail which is part of Drawn to the Valley Open Studios. This year, the event runs from 22-30 September – visit the website for more information.

The famous Treby Arms at Sparkwell has a new owner, a fresh look and a relaxed fusion Italian menu that promises a family friendly, easy and affordable dining experience alongside the traditional village pub.

The Treby Arms in Sparkwell dates back to 1855 when pioneering engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel built it to serve the workers building up a thirst constructing the Royal Albert Bridge and the railway line linking Devon and Cornwall.

It had been closed for a number of years before reopening in a blaze of glory in 2011 and picking up two AA rosettes and a Michelin star in 2015 for its adventurous fine dining food.

Now new owner, Jamie Stevenson, promises a more relaxed air at ‘Elements at The Treby Arms’ with all the ingredients that have made a success of his boutique hotel with restaurant, ‘Elements’, and Italian restaurant ‘La Bocca’ in Bude. They have picked up five-star reviews on Trip Advisor for their combinations of fresh and tasty Italian food, great service and relaxed, easy atmosphere.

Dad of two Jamie says, “Italian food is perfect for families who want an affordable meal in an easy-going setting. The newly styled ‘Elements at The Treby Arms’ restaurant will offer the combination of fresh, sustainable, local ingredients with the Italian know-how of chef Leo from Naples.”

“If you go out with your family the most important ingredient is that children feel relaxed and happy and that’s the key to having a nice meal out,” says Jamie.

“We make it child-friendly by giving them nice things to do that make it fun to go out. It’s also really important for it to be affordable, so a family of two adults and two children can eat out for about £60-65.

Other successful ideas will migrate from Jamie’s Bude businesses to ‘Elements at The Treby Arms’.

“We enjoy welcoming big groups for birthdays and celebrations and Christmas,” he says. “We also offer cocktails and happy hours and great term-time lunch deals of two courses for £12, Monday to Friday. We also do a lot of sharing platters which people seem to enjoy. It all makes for a great relaxed atmosphere.”

There will be subtle changes in the downstairs bar area of ‘Elements at The Treby Arms’ – a fresh colour, some new lights and cushions – but it will still feel like the traditional village pub.

Jamie’s Treby takeover will give the inn a post-Michelin future after losing its star rating last year.

“A lot of people know the Treby and have a perception of how it is,” he says. “It is known for fine dining and as a celebration venue. It has been successful, and I now mean to turn the place around and bring something new to the area.

I’ll be bringing in a team from ‘Elements’, as well as retaining and employing a number of loyal local staff members. We have a tried and tested formula there and I’m sure it will work here.

We need to change the perception from an upmarket gastropub to something fresh and affordable and great for families.

Kel is walking tall again thanks to Foot Solutions A serious ski-ing accident as a teenager left Kel Hoblyn in constant pain for 16 years - until a visit to Foot Solutions.

Kel’s left knee was badly damaged in the accident on a school trip in Austria. Kel attended hospital, but was advised that it would not be a long-term problem.

But the condition persisted over the years and Kel was forced to take pain killers just to be able to get through the working day as a sales assistant with a leading clothing retailer in Drake Circus.

Then in February this year Kel had a minor accident which was diagnosed as a torn patella tendon, again affecting the left knee.

Kel, who is 29 and lives in Mount Gould, said: “After the accident in February I visited my knee specialist and was advised to wear a knee brace and also to have regular physiotheraphy treatment.

“It was my physio who recommended that I should visit Foot Solutions - and I’m so glad that I took his advice,” said Kel. “The staff could not have been more helpful and recommended customised insoles as a solution. It was clear that the damage to my knee had seriously affected my posture and customised insoles would help correct this.”

While the customised insoles were being manufactured Kel was provided with off-the-shelf insoles and the effect was immediate.

“I couldn’t believe the difference they made,” said Kel. “Ninety per cent of the pain went immediately and I just broke down in tears in the store. It was incredible.”

Now Kel has the customised insoles, along with specialised footwear from Foot Solutions to support her ankles.

“Now life is completely different.

Ocean City Blues N Jazz Festival on August 10 to 12

Sept 15 and 16 PLYMOUTH SEAFOOD FESTIVAL The Barbican and Sutton Harbour will come alive with a celebration of locally sourced and sustainably caught, high quality seafood.

Now in its seventh year, the Plymouth Seafood Festival will be supporting the fishing industry by offering a weekend full of delicious dishes for all the family to enjoy as well as hands-on activities, including children’s cookery fun, where they can touch and taste local produce. The city has many reasons to celebrate its fishing industry; Plymouth was the first in the world to be awarded the Fish2Fork Blue Fish status for its commitment to sourcing sustainable fish. Plymouth also has the second largest fish market in the UK, where every day the market can receive up to as much as 60 tons of fish. It’s no surprise that there is such a variety of fantastic seafood restaurants along the waterfront. The festival is a celebration of this and an opportunity to support Plymouth’s local fishing industry in a weekend of family-fun. Well known regional chefs from some of the best restaurants in the South West, will be showing off their culinary skills in the special Cookery Theatre. Throughout the weekend visitors can sample the delights of everything from lobster to whelk, as well as learning some new cooking techniques, such as picking

crab. Join in the fish auction of the day’s freshly caught catch; all contributions support the Fisherman’s Mission charity.

Visitors will be spoilt for choice with the huge selection of delicious food stalls to enjoy, and the children will love the crabbing competition along the harbour side by the Boat House Café on the Sunday. Prizes awarded on the main stage. CATERed will be entertaining the children with hands-on cookery fun and activities, where they can learn about local produce through touch and taste.

The festival’s official resident artist, Debby Mason, will have her fabulous artwork and products on display.

Commissioned by the Plymouth Trawler Agents, Debby has created a beautiful poster showing all 50 fish species which can be found from local waters. These will be available on her stand. Go aboard the fishing vessels provided by Interfish which will be moored alongside Quay Square. This is a great opportunity to explore the vessels and chat to the local fishermen about their fascinating and sometimes forbidding experiences out on the water.

And, more importantly, where to purchase the freshest, locally caught seafood. There is also the return of the fantastic Cardboard Boat Race, which will be on Commercial Wharf on Saturday.

Sizzling summer of surprises at Royal William Yard

From sampling some of the region’s best food from local traders, to catching the latest blockbusters on the lawn, this summer is packed with an array of events at Royal William Yard.

With something new to discover and experience on every visit, and with activities to suit all ages and interests, the Yard is this summer’s must-visit destination.

Returning each month is the award-winning Good Food Market, which boasts the freshest produce from the South West’s top suppliers, alongside artisan makers.

This August will also see the welcome return of #BardInTheYard, with an open-air production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, performed by the Barbican Theatre Group, taking place in Residence One Gardens.

In September guests to the Yard can expect the unexpected, as the dazzling Weekend of Wonders returns with circus performers wowing the crowds in a family-friendly extravaganza. And making the most of the warm summer’s evenings, the much-loved Open-Air Cinema is back, pitching up on the lawn for three blockbuster performances. Weekend of Wonders returns on September 2

Carnival! comes to the West End Plymouth’s unique independent quarter, the West End, is hosting its first summer carnival on Saturday August 4.

The free event, organised by the Plymouth City Centre Company in association with Plymouth Market, is open to everyone and will see local businesses getting involved and putting on free tasters and demonstrations, along with other sponsored activities, including music, children’s entertainers and dance in Cornwall Street, New George Street, Frankfort Gate and Market Avenue.

The West End is full of amazing independent shops and restaurants including Plymouth Market, which accommodates more than 140 stalls, eateries and cafes all under its newly refurbished roof. Nowhere else in Plymouth can you eat in a Brazilian café, buy fresh fish and find stunning jewellery all within a few yards of each other.

Steve Hughes, chief executive of the City Centre Company said “We’re really excited about Carnival! The Market will be hosting free face painting and a children’s entertainer to keep the youngsters occupied, a great opportunity to check out the huge variety of stalls and products available in the Grade II listed building. Local organisation Plymouth Community Homes, which has many residents and a community shop in the locality, is also supporting the event.

Westcountry artist exhibit at Plymouth One of the South West’s best loved artists in residence, Leanne Christie, is to launch a major new exhibition, Summer Love, at Host, the contemporary art gallery in Plymouth.

Renowned for her stunning flowerscape canvases, Totnesbased Leanne will be exhibiting her vibrant, showstopping originals, along with a selection of limited edition Giclé prints.

She has also chosen Host Galleries to launch her new singles collection; intricate, detailed new pieces, featuring delicate, but dramatic, lone blooms crafted in oils.

One of Leanne’s signature features is her unique use of gold leaf, glitter and jewels which add another level of depth and intrigue to her artworks. This almost three-dimensional feel comes alive in different lights, giving the paintings a different, almost magical vibe, depending on the time of day or year and the light source.

Leanne, who is originally from Warwickshire, moved to Cornwall with her family as a teenager and consequently revisits her memories of the coast for her many seascapes.

She was almost born to be a painter; her earliest memories are of her mother, also an artist, sketching and painting in her studio, so it’s unsurprising that the everchanging natural world around her has inspired and led her to be the artist she is today.

Since moving to Totnes, Leanne has expanded her repertoire and now she follows several natural muses: the moors, the coast and the riotous Devon hedgerows, currently in full bloom and brightening up the county’s numerous back lanes and paths. It’s easy to get pulled in to one of Leanne’s dreamy pieces; the flowers almost seem to move and sway

Local exhibitions Until Dec 21 2018 PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION House of Fraser, Floor 5 Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians.

The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction.

Jul 6 - Sep 1 COLLECTED SHADOWS Peninsula Arts Gallery, Plymouth University This exhibition of 200 photographs is drawn from the extensive collection of the Archive of Modern Conflict (AMC). The AMC was first established 25 years ago as a repository for vernacular photography and ephemera relating to the First and Second World Wars. It has since grown to a total of eight million images encompassing a plethora of subject matter - not solely defined by war and conflict - collected from diverse sources all over the world. This eclectic display includes scientific, astronomical and botanical studies, studio sittings, portraits and private snapshots, press photographs, film stills and aerial photographs from several wars, as well as a rich and unpredictable array of works we would simply have to call art.

Now in it’s eighth year, Signpost 7 - Future Pathways is an annual exhibition which explores how we process and communicate as creative thinkers. Whether we meditate, sketch, go on long journeys or take short walks, we are inspired by different things and motivated in different ways. This exhibition is curated by the Rhizome Artists’ Collective for students and artists living and working in the community who wish to celebrate and share the visual experiences of their work.

Sep 28 - 30 PLYMOUTH ART WEEKENDER Experience some of the most exciting exhibitions and events at the UK’s biggest art weekender. Co-ordinated by Visual Arts Plymouth and funded through Horizon, a collaborative two year programme of visual contemporary arts, funded through Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence fund and delivered by a partnership between Plymouth Culture, University of Plymouth, The Box, Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth Arts Centre, KARST and Visual Arts Plymouth.

Sep 28 - Oct 21 THE ATLANTIC PROJECT The Atlantic Project is a pilot for a new international festival of contemporary art in the South West of England. Plymouth is a city built upon visions of the future. As a deep water port, facing the Atlantic Ocean, its history is bound up with maritime exploration, in pursuit of the unknown worlds that lie over the horizon. In the lead up to Mayflower 400 in 2020, marking the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers’ voyage from Plymouth to the so-called ‘New World’ in North America, the aim is to test out the elements that will make up a new ‘biennial’ festival in the UK.

Leanne herself said: “I always view Plymouth as being an influential milestone for my artwork. Back in the day, this city gave me the platform I needed to showcase my work so whenever I’m invited back to exhibit I push myself to create something fresh and vibrant; that way I can provide something unique and beautiful for new and existing clients.

“I’ve exhibited several times in Plymouth but was blown away by the response to my last show a couple of years ago, so I’ve been impatiently waiting to return. When I heard that Host was opening early this year I knew I didn’t have long to wait. When I heard where it was going to be I knew it wasn’t going to be just another gallery. Host is a stunning space that provides the perfect backdrop to any art, so for the past few months I’ve been imagining and planning the collection that will adorn those walls this summer. I honestly cannot wait.”

The Summer Love exhibition opens on Saturday July 21 and runs until Saturday August 4. There will be a chance to meet and speak with Leanne about her work in three special Meet the Artist sessions over the opening weekend, which will also be an opportunity to place a commission with Leanne. Lessons to be learned from

the High Street closures The demise of the High Street has made major headlines not only in the national press, but also the local media for many months now.

Famous retail brands which have been around for longer than my lifetime are disappearing at an unprecedented rate leaving empty retail spaces that landlords are struggling to fill.

By Travel Expert Retailers are cutting back on staff and outlets to stem the flow of bad financial results to differing ends. The underlying reason for this, in what appears an avalanche of closures, is our use of the internet with younger shoppers deciding to buy from home rather than visit their own town centres.

What I find most interesting are the brands that started their business online have gone from strength to strength and those retailers, with a few exceptions, that had a high street presence but moved to also sell online, are struggling.

The travel industry was one of the pioneering sectors to trade online before other retail organisations followed suit.

Firstly, the low-cost airlines followed by tour operators and hotels gave consumers the confidence to purchase bigger value items without them needing to leave their living rooms.

So, what are some businesses doing right and others doing wrong? Most importantly you must move with the times. Ten years ago Peter Goord Travel was a very different business from what it is today: we were well known for booking only package holidays to Cyprus and Spain with our office more of a ‘pop in pop out’ transaction.

Today we are conscious that booking your holiday needs to be more of an event, we want you to discuss the different options with our staff, using our experience to make your holiday something not only to enjoy but something to really look forward too.

Our office has been refurbished to give our clients a much more relaxed atmosphere and an overall better booking experience. The result of this change has meant our clientele have changed with us. Those that appreciate advice and good service now book with us and have realised the value of a face to face experience rather than the quite mundane on-line transaction.

Of course, we have lost clients along the way who are solely interested in the lowest price, but have gained many more. We are very fortunate to have a very loyal client base who have been booking with us over the past 40 years who are now more friends than customers.

So where have these big retail shops gone wrong? I feel their biggest issue is catering for their customer's needs. I have been into the major department stores many times over the past few years and I must be honest and say the overall service and shopping experience has been poor.

I find this amazing as I’ve made a point to come into the shop in the first place because I wanted to see the product first hand and on certain items discuss with the sales person its suitability.

On a recent trip to the USA I was very surprised to see most of their TV advertisements for retail outlets do not highlight their website and ask their customers to come and visit them and see what they have to offer. This surely is the only way to go if you want to have a shop presence rather than go totally online.

With technology we are also losing customer service with the implementation of self service check-outs. I totally understand why shops are now using them to save money and cater for their younger clients. Personally, I hate them and prefer to queue and be served by a human being.

Interestingly in the USA I went into numerous shops and convenience stores and did not come across one self service check-out.

Going back to travel, surely if you’re looking to visit a country that you know very little about it is better to speak to someone face to face who’s been there than troll through hundreds of thousands of pages online that are a mix of genuine opinions, advertisements and bogus reviews.

I therefore feel that the loss of the big department stores

in all our city centres in the short term seems a big disaster but in the long term if smaller businesses can open in their place offering product and service that we need, it might prove the saviour of our high street.

If of course I’m wrong, then it will be a very sad world when we haven’t got businesses we can go to that will give you good advice and good service doing everything online.

I have seen with our industry when things go wrong, the ash cloud and tour operators going out of business just to mention a few, have left many with no one to contact and telephones not answered. However, if they had dealt with a travel agent like us, it would be our job to sort things out for you and be your first point of contact.

The best way to sum up the current retail situation was a conversation I had with a client who I bumped into at a recent event. After shaking hands, he congratulated me on Peter Goord Travel being in business for over 40 years.

He reminded me of a conversation I had with him nearly 10 years previous when he stated that the ‘internet would kill off travel agents within five years.’

Luckily his prediction was wrong and my business goes from strength to strength. The question is if we hadn’t had remodelled our business and moved with times would we still be around?

Plymouth hair extensionist and businesswoman Danielle Crookall got so fed up that there was no effective hair extensions holder on the market, that she decided to invent her own!

Danielle’s custom-made EasyStrands® Hair Extensions Holder is being launched at a prestigious industry fair in London in October – and if the pre-orders are anything to go by, it’s going to be a huge success.

Danielle, from Peverell, has already received pre-orders internationally, and hairdressers to celebrities are among the first to endorse it.

Alongside the holder, Danielle is also launching her EasyStrands® Custom Colour Mat at the 2018 Salon International Show at London’s ExCel on October 13 to 15. The mat, which attaches to the holder, allows stylists to easily custom colour, wash and dry the extensions.

On average, using the holder halves the time that it takes to fit extensions.

Just as importantly, it keeps the extensions in tip-top condition.

Danielle, a hair extension specialist for 12 years, revealed that her pet dog Troy can claim part of the credit for the brainwave: “He’s a very fluffy Pomeranian,” she explained. “I was combing him one day and thought ‘oh, I wonder if a dog comb would work as an extension holder’. So he was the inspiration really!”

Danielle went out and bought a dog comb, which she customised by gluing it to her trolley: “But it kept pinging off, so I needed to find another solution. I had to do

something because I was so fed up with the extensions getting everywhere.

“It’s ridiculous, having to ask clients to sit there and hold their extensions because we don’t have anywhere we can put them. And they get tangled up. I had already looked online and there was nothing that did everything an extensionist needs.

“I wanted something that’s convenient, stylish, keeps the hair in beautiful condition, and helps me fit them more quickly. I can fit 100 strands in an hour using EasyStrands®, instead of two hours.”

Mum-of-two Danielle took her idea to South Devon product designers, Toby the Pomeranian Alphatech and Plymouth engineering company Magma Moulding, who are about to do the first production run at their manufacturing site at the Burrington Way Industrial Estate.

The holder is adjustable so can fit on the edge of most surfaces, vertically or horizontally. Because it’s detachable and portable, it’s ideal for mobile stylists, while the comb can also be removed and washed.

Another advantage is that the holder can comfortably fit 300 strands of hair.

“I only came up with the idea nine months ago so it’s all happened very fast – and my family have helped me all the way,” said Danielle.

Her cousin, Dominic Kelly, is an engineer and helped make the first prototype. And her stepmother, Elle, is a graphic designer and is doing the branding, marketing and research, which has included getting feedback to the prototype from leading hair extensionists.

“The response from everyone has been amazing.

Extensionists and salon owners have asked me if they can have one now because they don’t want to wait until October!

We started getting orders as soon as pre-ordering went live – the first one was from Illinois.

“I’m not surprised because hair extensionists the world over have been crying out for a purpose-made device,” she added. “Our aim is for it to be an industry standard tool for all professional extensionists and trainees.”

The holder has a launch price of £49.99 and an RRP of £59.99. Danielle says extensionists will recoup that straight away, through the time saved: “And it’s not just functional, it’s high end. It’s expertly-made and it looks good.”

Danielle has received support from investor, Barry Barrett, to pay for the development and first production run but says that will be covered when the first batch sells out: “I’m so excited, I can’t wait until the launch, because I know it’s going to do well. The research tells us that and I just know from my own experience.”

The EasyStrands® holder has been entered in two Innovation of the Year competitions for the industry and the winners are due to be announced in September.

The next step for Danielle is to secure wholesale outlets in the UK and overseas. All-in-all then, a busy time, but, she said: “I love what I do. I don’t regard it as a job, more like a hobby I get paid for.”

This time Stuart answers questions frequently asked of Shore Mortgage and Insurance Services on the subject of Equity Release Mortgages I am 83 years old and struggle to live on my State Pension.

A friend has told me that as I own my own property, I am able to do ‘Equity Release’ to obtain a lump sum from the value in my house. What is this and how does it work?

Equity release is a financial arrangement by which the owner of the property can withdraw tax-free cash from the property value whilst continuing to live in the property.

You can withdraw funds (equity) built up within your property to provide a financial lump sum to support your lifestyle.

They are available for anyone who owns their property who is 55 or over. These 55+ equity release schemes actually fall into two categories: a Lifetime Mortgage or Home Reversion Plan.

Lifetime Mortgages ensure 100% home-ownership and various product formats provide flexibility and lifestyle options for people at, or in retirement.

Equity Release allows you to sell some or all your home to a home reversion provider.

If you are considering either scheme, look for an independent, whole of market mortgage broker for advice.

If you do not know one, use websites like VouchedFor.co.uk and unbiased.co.uk. They act like Trip Advisor for mortgage brokers.

How much could I expect to release from my home using Equity Release? I am 84 years old and my property is valued at £420,000.

This is the type of question that we are often asked. Many people know the value of their property, so want to know the amount that they can release from the Equity within the property.

To obtain this information, contact an independent, whole of market mortgage broker who can calculate this for you.

They will ask you a series of questions to ensure you are receiving the best advice for your specific circumstances.

I am interested in Equity Release but have heard that if you end up with Negative Equity, your family may have to pay money to the lender when you die.

Releasing funds from the equity in your property now, only for it to cause debt problems for your family when you die or go permanently into residential care is a fear of many clients.

If you have a product with ‘No Negative Equity Guarantee’ this cannot happen. There are many Equity Release products with this facility available on the market now.

I am keen to take out an Equity Release Mortgage but want to maintain ownership until I am ready to sell my property.

This can be done. The type of mortgage that would enable you to do this is called a Lifetime Mortgage. Using this type of Equity Release product, you can release funds from the Equity in your property. You have the option for the interest to be ‘rolled up’. This means that you can choose to pay it at the end, or to make partial or full, interest payments during your lifetime.

In the event of the death or entry into permanent residential care of the owner, the property is sold and the mortgage (plus any interest) paid back to the lender.

My children do not want me to take money out of my property using Equity Release as they feel I will be spending their inheritance.

The best way to allay these fears is for them to be involved with the process. All reputable brokers will be delighted to include family in meetings to ensure that they understand all aspects of Equity Release.

Why did you choose estate agency as a career?

Well I have my mum and the Women’s Institute to thank for that. She was an avid member of the WI in Luxulyan, the Cornish village where I grew up, and they would often invite guest speakers to their meetings. There was a presentation by an independent surveyor/estate agent from the St Austell area and as soon as he told his audience that you need the gift of the gab to be a good estate agent, my mum knew I was the perfect candidate. It was refreshing to hear that my chatterbox tendencies finally had some merit, as they had only ever got me into trouble at school. During a history lesson on the Romans, my teacher renamed me ‘Loudius Mouthicus’, much to the hilarity of my classmates.

Tell us about your first job It was a bit like when Norman Tebbit, the Tory MP of that era, urged people to get on their bikes to find work – although in my case it was a 50cc motorcycle. It was 1988 and I visited every agent in St Austell using my best sales pitch and finally, one of them offered me two week’s work experience. It was all very glamourous - valuations, viewings - so imagine my excitement when they offered me a paid office junior/YTS post. Cue stark reality check; there was a lot of tea and coffee making, photocopying, more tea and coffee making, filing, more tea…well you get the idea. Joking apart though, they gave me my first break and I will be eternally grateful for that.

Starting my career as an office junior has afforded me bags of empathy with office juniors that I employ/ have employed. So every cloud and all that?!

What do you like and dislike about your job?

Nothing beats that look of excitement and delight in the eyes of those people you have helped to realise their dreams of home ownership. It is quite addictive and you never tire of it. As something of an amateur local historian and wordsmith, I also love selling (and describing) the old properties with fascinating back stories to tell, and then there’s the many clients and colleagues I have met down the years. As for dislikes - bad estate agents, online only agents who do very little to earn their fee, agents who lack honesty or integrity – you get the idea. Also, there is nothing worse than having to make redundancies in economic recessions and delivering bad news when a buyer or seller pulls out.

What have been the highlights of your career – any lows?

The real highlight for me is working on new, winning strategies and promotions with the team. Also, the fact we have sold countless homes that have failed to sell with other

BUSINESS MATTERS agents, which means we must be doing something right.

Our many awards for customer service; that makes me very proud too. With all those highs, I guess lows are inevitable, but there is only one thing professionally that gets me down, when property transactions are a result of bereavement, divorce, illness or redundancy. No matter how many years you have been in the job…that never gets any easier.

How has the industry changed in 30 years – and what about the next 30?

Technology. As a YTS/office junior in Cornwall, I had to glue hundreds of photos to property details; now we are taking aerial photos of some homes using hi-tech drones. The internet has radically changed the way people house hunt too, but not all technological innovation has been positive.

Online only agents may have initially caught the attention, but I think customers are starting to wise up and see through the slick marketing gloss. As for the future, I am sure there will be greater use of technology, particularly in video marketing, and with regulation for the industry finally on the horizon, I look forward to the day ‘cowboy’ estate agents ride off into the sunset for good.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced professionally in your career?

Oh that’s an easy one, recovering from brain damage after a horrific skiing accident in France just before Christmas, 2014. I was lucky to be alive let alone able to return to work.

After several weeks in a coma I awoke paralysed and unable to speak, but thanks to some amazing medical teams, I learned to walk and talk again. Returning to work has been a challenge. My speech has been affected by the accident and unsurprisingly, I had lost confidence.

I needed to get it back so recently took the decision to return to valuing property. I’ve been telling myself that valuing again represents, 'the final piece of my Darren at the start of his thirty year long career rehabilitation journey jigsaw' and to 'man up and show the same determination and fighting spirit that enabled me to get this far, post-accident'. It’s a part of the job I could once do standing on my head but recently seemed like a mountain to climb, but I am happy to report it has been a success. Customers clearly don’t mind some confused, old timer visiting them!

What would you be if you weren’t an estate agent?

I wanted to be a football/sports commentator until mum returned from that WI presentation. Maybe sales, in retail, insurance or vehicles, perhaps journalism. I guess with my gift of the gab those are the sort of careers I could be good at – even if my ‘gab’ has got a little slower since the accident.

And finally, who are the most important people in your business - customers or staff?

Ooh, tricky one. They say ‘the customer is king’ and I agree.

We are a very customer service focused business, but in a close call, I’m picking staff. Why? Well I wouldn’t be able to deliver a service of the highest quality and professionalism without motivated, dedicated and driven team members who absolutely buy into my vision for the business. I feel privileged to have worked for/with some amazing people, colleagues I also consider as friends, people like my current team who kept my business going during the darkest hours following my accident. View from the Sky Lounge and it’s open to the public!

Plymouth’s tallest building - the 23-storey Beckley Point has been officially opened at a special ceremony in the Sky Lounge on the top floor of the 256 feet high landmark.

The new space offers spectacular panoramic views across the city and is open to the public to hire for special events, meetings and other formal occasions.

It was formally opened by Nick Richards, managing director for UK and Ireland of GSA, parent company of Beckley Point’s operators, the Student Housing Company.

It was a special moment for Nick, who grew up in Plymouth, attending St Boniface College before leaving the city to study accounting and economics at Kent University.

Nick’s parents John and Shirley still live in the city - John was the vicar at St Mary’s in Plympton before retirement - and they were given a sneak preview of the Sky Lounge a few days before the official opening.

Nick said: “It was great to show them around the building and take them to the Sky Lounge. I think they were pretty impressed!”

Scarring caused by medical negligence Although scarring is a risk associated with many medical treatments, unnecessary scarring caused by medical negligence is something that should not happen in a modern healthcare setting.

Scarring negligence cases arise when inadequate care causes excessive laceration or skin damage which leads to a scar. Similar cases can also arise when a patient receives inadequate treatment for an existing injury, such as a cut or a burn, which becomes infected.

A scar may be defined as “a mark on the skin or within the body tissue where a wound, burn, or sore has not healed completely and fibrous connective tissue has developed”. Generally, the more severe the injury, the worst the scar is, although a person’s age, skin type and general health can influence the healing process. In some cases, injuries can be so severe that they require a skin graft or cosmetic camouflaging techniques.

A scar will, over time, reach a degree of maturity.

This is usually between 18-24 months of the date of the injury. On some occasions, the scar will get better, to the extent that it is no longer visible, but sometimes there can be a worsening in appearance. Where a scar exists as a consequence of a traumatic injury, such as a laceration, the result is nearly always the same permanent change to the skin.

There are numerous intangible difficulties that can result from severe scarring or disfigurement. Severe disfigurement can give rise to both physical and psychological damage which can have a profound

effect on an individual’s ability to live a normal life.

Examples of scarring caused by negligence include: • Poor surgical technique.

• Inappropriate use of surgical equipment.

• Excessive skin removal during an operation.

• Operating on the wrong part of the body.

• Surgical burns.

• Using the wrong type of stitches, or an incorrect technique.

• Inadequate monitoring for infection following an operation.

Around 23 million adults in the UK are believed to have some kind of scar on their body. The majority of these scars are minor and would not be visible to anyone at a distance. However, figures released by the charity Changing Faces indicate that 1,345,000 people in the UK have at least one significant scar to their body or face.

The level of compensation that might be awarded in connection with a scarring negligence claim will vary depending on the following: • The nature of the underlying injury which has resulted in disfigurement.

• The nature and extent of the residual scarring or disfigurement.

• The cosmetic impact of the injury.

• The psychological impact upon the individual.

• The extent to which the injury adversely affects the individual’s social, domestic and work lives.

• The need for remedial surgery.

Nick, who has worked in the student accommodation industry for 18 years, said that he likes to come back to Plymouth whenever he can but that is not as often as he would like because of work pressures.

“Thanks to the Beckley Point development I have been back to Plymouth four times in recent weeks. It’s great to see how dramatically the landscape of the city has changed over the past few years,” he said.

He has supported Plymouth Argyle since his youth - but Nick Richards doesn’t get to join the Green Army too many times a year.

“It’s always the first result I look for,” added Nick.

Top NHS honour for Derriford nurse Sian

A Derriford nurse with over 30 years experience has won a top award.

Sian Dennison, head of nursing (Cancer and End of Life) has won the ‘Excellence in Cancer Care Award’ at the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards.

The prestigious competition is the first of its kind to mark the 70th birthday of the NHS, and to recognise the massive contribution made by the individuals who work in and alongside the NHS. Nominations for the awards were put forward by the three local MPs Johnny Mercer, Gary Streeter and Luke Pollard, before a panel of regional judges chose the shortlist from nearly 800 nominations submitted.

Sian attended the awards ceremony held in Parliament’s Terrace Pavilion, where she was announced the winner.

The award was presented by the chief executive of NHS Improvement, Ian Dalton, and Andreas Haimböck-Tichy, director of Healthcare and Life Sciences at IBM. Upon receiving the award, Sian said: “I’m utterly flabbergasted … absolutely thrilled. I feel so very lucky. But it’s not just about me.

“To me, this award is about the team I work with. I couldn’t have achieved all that has been delivered without their passion, dedication and their support to improve patient care

and make a difference.”

Sian has been a nurse for over 30 years and has been described by her colleagues as “the voice for cancer services and cancer patients in the region.”

Ann James, chief executive of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, said: “Sian has been one of my role models for many years. She’s such a lovely, able and committed individual, and we are incredibly proud of her.

“We’d like to thank all three MPs for their brilliant support in nominating Sian, and for helping her and her team to be recognised for their fantastic work.”

Johnny Mercer, who attended the awards with Sian, tweeted that it was 'wonderful news' and that he was #plymouthproud.

Gary Streeter said: “We are thrilled at this recognition of Sian and her team. Derriford has a high reputation for cancer care and Sian is very much a part of that success. Well done to Sian and all at Derriford.”

Luke Pollard added: “All our NHS staff in Plymouth do an incredible job under very difficult circumstances. Sian fully deserves this award. She is devoted to improving cancer care at every stage - from early diagnosis to end of life.

"She embodies a positive, caring and progressive culture with her team. This is superb news for Derriford Hospital and for our city. Well done Sian, we are so proud of you!”

GARDENING MATTERS

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre What a glorious summer we’ve been having. It’s been the best for a few years and the gardens are loving the sunshine, but because they have been drying out they do need regular watering.

Keeping on top of the watering can be a challenging chore, especially when most plants drink a lot more than you think they will, and it can be expensive too, if you are on a meter.

Most established garden plants should be able to cope with a good drenching once a week in this weather. Pots, baskets and newly planted plants will need watering at least once a day in hot, sunny and windy weather, sometimes twice a day.

Here at the garden centre we are lucky as we had a well built back in the 1980s underneath the centre and we collect the rain water and excess run off from watering, so we don’t have to use mains water to keep our plants looking fresh.

This is obviously unachievable in a domestic setting, but the same principles can be applied. Installing water butts on your house down pipes will enable you to collect the rainwater, and if you have a garage, shed or greenhouse, you can use those as well adding water butts to collect even more rainwater from their roofs.

Water from your washing machine, dirty dishes, baths and showers can also be used on the garden, Either use buckets to fill up your water butt, or you can attach a water diverter kit to your waste pipe and direct it straight into your water butts.

General household soaps and detergents are harmless to plants, but don’t use water that contains bleach, disinfectant, dishwasher soap, or stronger cleaners as those are harmful to plants.

Water your garden late in the evening when its cooler, as this will help to reduce evaporation and prevent plants from being scorched. The cooler night temperatures will enable the plants to absorb more water which in turn will result in them drying out less.

If you have missed an evening’s watering and your plants are dry, you can also water early in the morning before the temperatures begin to rise. It’s best to avoid watering in the heat of the day as this can cause the leaves and blooms to burn, but if a plant is wilting and is desperate for water, then water them. Prolonging dehydration could further deteriorate the plant and could result in death.

Mulching your borders with compost, bark or farm yard manure after giving it a good soak will reduce the need for watering, as this will help to keep plant roots cool and will also lock in the moisture from the soil, by shielding it from evaporation.

To help reduce the amount of watering needed for pots and baskets, when planting them initially, mix a scoop of water storing crystals with the potting mixture before planting. When you water them and the crystals come into contact with water, they will expand and absorb the water. When the temperature begins to rise, the crystals slowly start to release the water back into the soil, reducing the need for watering.

Being careful about which plants to water can also help reduce the amount of time and water used when watering.

Mature, established plants can cope with one good drenching a week, whereas newly planted plants, even if drought tolerant, are very susceptible to drying out and will need watering daily until established.

Now that watering issues have been resolved let’s have a look at plants that are flourishing in August.

considered old fashioned plants, but due to modern breeding, new and unusual varieties are becoming available and they are becoming fashionable again. They are easy to grow, flower over a long period, make great cut flowers and will happily grow in shade. They can also be grown in a pot or in the ground.

Trachelospermum jasminoides, otherwise known as the Evergreen Jasmine, or Star Jasmine is a great climber to grow.

It produces an abundance of white, star shaped, sweetly scented flowers. The evergreen foliage turns bright scarlet in winter and remains that colour until spring. It is low maintenance, well behaved, and can be grown in a pot or in the ground in full sun to partial shade.

our plants as the ve continues... large daisy flower heads with yellow petals that surround a black central cone. They are versatile plants and can be grown in a formal herbaceous planting or a naturalistic scheme where its seed heads add further structure and interest.

It looks impressive between groups of grasses and other herbaceous perennials. They grow to a height of 60-90cm (2 to 3 ft) with a spread of 60cm (2ft). Grow them in full sun in free draining soil. Recently new varieties have been introduced that offer new and bold colours that are incredibly free flowering.

Rudbeckia Summerinas are available in yellow, orange or a rusty brown colour. They can flower from July into early winter. Give them full sun and free draining soil and they will come back year after year. They are slightly smaller in height and spread than traditional rudbeckias, they will grow to approximately to 45-60cm in height and spread.

Agapanthus (pictured below) are great showy, garden flowers. They have tall stems with exotic looking flowers in striking blue, mauve, white and pink, and coming to their peak in July and August. They flower on long thin, but sturdy stems, high above their grass like foliage and will look fantastic growing through and amongst Dahlias that have darker foliage and pink or yellow flowers.

There are two distinct types of Agapanthus: the deciduous species come from colder regions and are generally hardier. The evergreen species are from milder parts of South Africa which have higher rainfall.

These varieties tend to be less hardy and may not remain evergreen if the winter is very cold, but will survive quite happily in the South West. All agapanthus are drought tolerant and a good choice for coastal areas, coping well with wind and salty air. Plant in well-drained soil and in full sun. Height and spread can vary between varieties, from 30cm1.5m (1ft - 5ft). www.cornerstonevision.com
