Protecting your home for your children is something often found high on a client’s list of priorities, and why not? Most of us spend a long time paying the mortgage before it becomes truly ours.

Melanie Cotterill There are some simple steps that can be taken to ensure that your interest in the property passes to your loved ones after your death, whilst protecting your surviving partner’s right to remain living there.

Historically most couples purchase their property as joint tenants, which means on the death of either of you the whole value of the property passes to the survivor.

If you want to protect your children’s inheritance, why not consider severing the joint tenancy to own your property as tenant-in-common. This will allow you to make provision for your partner to remain in the property for their lifetime, whilst protecting your share of the capital of the property for whoever you choose.

Your surviving partner has the peace of mind that they can remain in the property and still have the option to move to another property, using the whole of the proceeds of sale, if they so wish. The new property would be purchased half in the name of the survivor of you, and half in the name of the Trustees of your estate, held on Trust for your beneficiaries.

You can also consider going a step further by giving your partner a Life Interest in the property. This is a useful option to create extra income for them, if you were the main pension provider, and you die first.

This is a very flexible option as the Property Trust only takes effect on the death of one of you, therefore meaning you can move house as many times as you like during your lifetime.

You need only to advise your conveyancer that you wish to own any replacement property as tenants-in-common.

You would also have the peace of mind that if your surviving partner remarried or lived with a partner as a couple, your interest in the family home will pass to your chosen beneficiaries, regardless of whatever decisions your surviving partner made after your death.

Cutting edge fashion enterprise is to be launched in Plymouth

Fashion students at Plymouth College of Art

Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Trust are launching a new venture, Makers HQ, a unique and visionary community interest company created to provide cut, make and trim services to the fashion industry, with a strong focus on achieving ethical, British manufacture.

Power to Change, the independent trust supporting community businesses in England, provided more than £180,000 of funding to make the project possible, complemented by £96,000 funded by the Social Enterprise Investment Fund from Plymouth City Council.‚ Plymouth has a rich heritage in fashion and textile manufacture, with the Millfields Trust HQ building on Union Street formerly acting as home to the Jaeger clothing factory, until its closure in 1997.

Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Trust are working together to reignite the fashion manufacturing sector within the South West and recreate how a fashion factory can drive economic and community regeneration.

Makers HQ will bring together academic institutions, businesses, designers, makers and members of the local community to create a sustainable and innovative new business model for the fashion and textiles sector in Plymouth.

The company aims to drive community regeneration, initially within the Stonehouse area, through job creation, increased retention of highly-skilled graduates and training opportunities.

A total of 250 jobs were lost 21 years ago when the Jaeger factory closed, with a large number of those skilled workers still residing in the area. Plymouth has a heritage of making and manufacturing, and Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Trust hope that Makers HQ will help to re-establish the city’s historical links to the fashion industry.

To help launch the ambitious project, Makers HQ are recruiting a studio manager to establish the sampling unit and training facility. Whoever is appointed will become the driving force behind the company and will have previous experience of working with fashion brands, an excellent

understanding of the requirements for a successful business start up, and a working knowledge of industrial machines and pattern cutting.

Power to Change is an independent trust, whose funding is used to strengthen community businesses across England.

At a time when many part of the UK face cuts, neglect and social problems, Power to Change is using its £150 million endowment from the Big Lottery Fund to help local people come together to take control, and make sure their local areas survive and stay vibrant.

The Big Lottery Fund supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities across the UK. We are responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised by the National Lottery and invest over £650 million a year in projects big and small in health, education, environment and charitable purposes.

Since June 2004 over £8 billion has been awarded to projects that change the lives of millions of people. Every year it funds 13,000 small local projects tackling big social problems like poor mental health and homelessness. Since the National Lottery began in 1994, £34 billion has been raised and more than 450,000 grants awarded.

Founded in 1856, Plymouth College of Art is a specialist independent Higher Education Institution run by artists for artists. WOMEN AT WORK A Plymouth charity set up in 2017 to provide fitness and wellbeing support to perinatal women has helped over 100 young mums and mums-to-be in its first year.

Life Remedy offers free specialist group sessions for women who are pregnant or postnatal to stay fit and healthy.

It’s also is a vital support network during what can be period of anxiety, exhaustion, loneliness and depression.

Initially funded by the National Lottery and Sport England, Life Remedy has just received a grant for another 12 months from the Postcode Lottery to offer support to women who might otherwise not have access to wellbeing facilities.

The organisation is led by Danielle Mathers, a qualified antenatal and postnatal exercise instructor with counselling skills. Danielle and the charity’s team of instructors offer a range of fitness classes at venues across the city.

Life Remedy is a helping hand expectant and comments page on the website, one woman said the postnatal classes changed her life. Another said the fitness classes after she’d had her baby helped her to “regain my confidence, strength and socialise with other mums in the same boat”. And another mum added: “Not only is it helping me with my fitness, it’s helping mentally as I’m interacting with other mums.”

Now, the charity is keen to reach more women: “The reason it was set up was because we identified that there was a massive gap in support,” said Danielle. “Plymouth has a high rate of postnatal depression, but we also know there is a need for pregnant women to access support, too.”

Danielle outlined some of the issues expecting and new mums face: “It’s very common to have feelings of guilt – am I doing things right? Am I doing enough? – and low self-esteem and self-criticism are massive issues. Sleep deprivation and not spending any money or time on yourself, all of these are factors that can build up. You’ve got all this responsibility, 24/7.

“In the end, the whole ‘I can’t cope’ feeling can be overwhelming, especially for women spending a lot of time at home on their own. A fifth of women are affected by mental health during pregnancy or in the postnatal year – and loneliness and isolation is often a cause. Financial worries are also a factor because they’re unable to work. But it’s not just about them, it’s about the whole family, because if mum is struggling, that has an impact on everyone.”

Danielle knows, because she’s been there: “When I had my son six years ago, I thought ‘I can’t cope’ but I didn’t want to tell anyone because you’re not supposed to feel bad when you’ve just had a baby. I noticed a gap in the right sort of support and I felt passionately that I wanted to do something about it.

“Once you chat about it, you find that you’re not alone, there are lots of other women feeling the same way. And if you get the right support, you’ll get through.”

Life Remedy’s classes are carefully designed to meet specific fitness needs. For example, pregna-cise is a gentle exercise session aimed at strengthening all the important muscles during pregnancy, while mood-boosting circuits and Pilates are for postnatal mums wanting to rediscover their old selves. The exercises gently rehabilitate the core and pelvic floor allowing an easy return to exercise for those who’ve been away from fitness for a while.

“Being fit in pregnancy is really important,” said Danielle.

“Not having the right exercise is like turning up for a marathon without doing any training! My advice is to come to the antenatal classes because it doesn’t just prepare you for having your baby, it helps afterwards, too. And with the postnatal classes, you can access all the support you need throughout.

“But it’s not just an exercise class,” she added. “It’s a nice friendly, social environment, away from prejudice, with women facing the same issues. It’s designed for them. Come along, exercise, make friends, have some ‘me’ time. Some have become great friends, and that’s lovely to see.”

s offering d to city’s d new mums At the time of writing, Nico Hileson-Perrett was due to have twins in three weeks’ time. She was attending an antenatal Pilates class led by instructor Aly Forrest at Tothill Community Centre in St Judes: “Coming here gives us the confidence that the exercises we are doing are right for us and for our babies,” said Nico. “It has also been nice to meet other mums-to-be.”

There are never more than 10 in any class and at postnatal sessions, childcare assistants look after the babies in a creche equipped with sensory toys. “It’s not intimidating, it’s somewhere that the women can feel comfortable. And afterwards, they stay for a chat, which is great,” said Danielle.

The charity works closely with local health providers and some women will require their GP’s clearance to do the exercises. Women can self-refer by contacting Danielle direct, or ask for a referral from their GP or midwife.

Classes are held at various times and days at Tothill Community Centre in St Judes, the Salvation Army Hall in Whitleigh, Keyham Methodist Church Centre, and Emmanuel Church Hall in Mannamead. Visit the website or call Danielle for more information.

Popular artists Brian and A bring Plymouth to colourfu Royal William Yard exhibiti

Two artists, brought together by their love of big, bright colours – and by their love of Plymouth’s iconic landmarks.

Brian Pollard and Arth Lawr paint some of the best-known buildings and views in Plymouth, using the naive style of painting the city became famous for with Beryl Cook’s wonderful larger than life Barbican characters.

Look at Brian and Arth’s paintings and you’ll see Smeaton’s Tower, The Hoe, The Sound, Tinside Lido, Wembury, the Mew Stone, Plymouth Gin Distillery, The Barbican, The Mayflower Steps, and, of course, The Dolphin pub, where Brian would often meet Beryl for a drink and a chat. All unmistakable landmarks, and all given ‘naïve’ look.

It’s easy to see why Brian and Arth have decided to show their work together. Entitled ‘2 Naïve in Plymouth’, the exhibition of some 60 acrylic paintings runs from March 20 to April 8 at Ocean Studios at the Royal William Yard.

With its big grey stone walls, Arth says it’s the perfect exhibiting space for their work: “We’re going to hang our pictures intermingled and it’s just going to be one big visual blast. When people walk in, there will be an explosion of colour right down that wall.”

For Brian, whose work is internationally known, this will be his first major exhibition in over a decade. He has been creating his trademark colourful paintings for 40 years, while Arth has been painting for the past 20 years. In fact, he’d only just been born when Brian was working on his first piece in the late 1970s.

Both artists are drawn back time and again to their favourite places in the South West, and Plymouth in

particular: “Plymouth is a great place to paint, there are so many places that lend themselves to be painted,” said Brian.

“Just look at The Hoe. I paint this view so many times because I think it is the greatest sea view of any city in England. The South West in general, but the Plymouth seascapes especially, are a great stimulus.”

The two artists met a couple of years ago when Arth asked if he could pop by Brian’s studio for a chat: “I was inspired by Brian through his intensity of colour, which was something I wanted to get across in my own work,” said Arth. “Brian has helped me loads over the last couple of years to refine my own style.”

This intensity is created by applying six or seven layers of each and every colour: “It’s actually very meticulous and some people might think that it’s monotonous, but I find it therapeutic and relaxing,” said Arth.

“One of the reasons I love this style is that it’s quirky,” he added. “You have the luxury of being able to exaggerate the bits you want, so you’re not tied by reality. If you want to make something bigger than it really is, you just do that – and it works. We shape things the way we want to see them.”

It’s why you’ll see elements added to their paintings. In Arth’s case, it’s usually a cat. With Brian, it’s often hot air balloons: “The aim is to bring fun into the paintings,” said Brian. “You can get away with almost anything, within reason.

“But while the word naïve is true in the style, it isn’t in the way the paintings are actually done,” added Brian. “The idea is to get the viewer focused on the picture. There’s something there, usually in the middle, that takes your eye straight away. It might be the cat, it might be Smeaton’s Tower, and then your eye spreads out and you notice lots of other things. So the paintings are quite carefully composed.”

Brian hasn’t had a major exhibition for 13 or 14 years because as soon as he finishes a painting, it’s sold.

For this exhibition, he has held back 30 paintings.

Arth is also supplying 30 pieces. Brian said: “I’ve never done a joint exhibition before, and I can’t think of anybody else that I can paint with at the moment.

“Arth uses colour to communicate in the same way I do – the colours are bright and they’re cheerful.

Rhythm is also very important in our paintings.

But at the same time, his paintings are different to mine in that he is able to offer a simplified image that I’m not able to do. My paintings are rather busy and hectic. Those differing factors make this work as a joint exhibition.”

Their contrasts are also shown in the two paintings they did together for promotional posters for the exhibition.

Brian focused on the backgrounds, while Arth did for foregrounds. This was another new experience for Brian: “I’ve done around 1,800 paintings, and this is the first time I’ve done a painting with another artist. Arth started on one and I started the other and we’d keep on swapping them.”

Their work differs to the way Beryl Cook painted in one big way: “Beryl focused on people, she wasn’t interested in the background so much,” said Brian. “She painted the figures very big, so she didn’t have to paint the background. Whereas I’m more interested in the background, not the people. The people just happen to fit in with the work.”

And he added: “Beryl put Plymouth on the map as a naïve art centre in Britain. With the exhibition, we’re saying ‘let’s get Plymouth back on that map’. And there are a lot of newer naïve painters emerging, too. I think it’s important that we try and carry on the tradition.”

With all the units fully assembled and delivered to the showroom direct, and quality-checked, it makes for a far more efficient installation process. The furniture is topped off with stunning work surfaces using materials largely sourced from other local businesses.

At the ‘Houzz’ ideas website, Arrital Kitchens won the Best of Houzz Award in 2017 for service and have just been awarded 2018 Best of Houzz for design. Both awards

are well-deserved. “We go the extra mile for our customers,” said Nick. “Because we are independent, we have a close 1-2-1 relationship with our clients. You don’t get that from a national company. And we don’t do sales gimmicks or pushy follow-up calls. Our quote is our quote and it’s up to our customers if they want to get back to us.”

Arrital Kitchens offer a concept-to-completion service, using their own team of fitters, but are happy to accommodate customers who want a ‘supply only’ service. A free, no-obligation design service is included: “We’ll do as much or as little as the customer wants,” said Annmarie, who, it comes as no surprise to learn, has previously worked in customer services.

It’s easy to see why the firm – whose strapline is ‘Innovative Design, Practical Solutions’ – has collected this year’s Houzz award for design, too.

Serving up delicious five-star fare at Thai restaurant-cafe Zaab

Translated from the Isan language of north east Thailand, the word ‘Zaab’ means ‘delicious’.

Well, it seems that the Zaab café-restaurant in Plymouth lives up to its name, because there are 52 customer reviews on its Facebook page – and all of them award five stars.

Many of the comments refer to it as ‘a hidden gem,’ or ‘a secret hideaway’ – but it looks as though the secret is now well and truly out.

You’ll find Zaab a cobblestone’s throw away from the waterfront on the Barbican, tucked away inside the shopping parade at 27 New Street, just behind the ice cream shop at Island House.

The historic parade used to be a cluster of store house buildings originating from the 1700s, a time when the Barbican was a bustling fishing and merchant centre. Full of nooks and crannies, it makes for an intriguing setting for a Thai restaurant.

Zaab was opened in January 2017 by Vas Sellers, who grew up in the Sakon Nakhon province in Isan, a region close to the border with Laos that’s famed for its extra spicy cuisine. Vas – short for Vasana – came to Plymouth in 2011 after meeting

her husband Ian when he was on holiday with his sons in Thailand.

Her route into the restaurant business was quite an unusual one. After training in Thailand as a Thai masseuse specialising in sports injuries, she started cooking seriously when friends told her that her food was better than most restaurants: “They said to me ‘your food is amazing. You should be in a restaurant’. So here I am!”

Zaab has a café vibe where diners can enjoy simple, authentic Thai dishes in a friendly atmosphere. There’s also a lovely sunny courtyard which is being spruced up in time for summer.

It had been a tea-room for several years but when Vas heard it was becoming available, she jumped at the chance: “This was my dream, to get my own restaurant and be my own boss,” she said. “Before, I had worked at other Thai restaurants so when I saw the lease was coming up here, I thought ‘let’s do it’.”

Vas and Ian had to completely gut the place to create the informal Thai feel they were looking for at Zaab. Once open, it didn’t take long for word to get out: “As soon as people discovered us, they started to spread the word to

their friends,” said Ian, who works at Babcock but helps out with the restaurant when he can. “All of our customers keep coming back, which is a commendation in itself.”

It’s easy to see why. Vas cooks everything fresh to order and the most expensive dish on the main menu is £5.90 – and that includes rice.

Daily specials are also available including a selection of seafood dishes. The most popular dishes on the main menu are masaman curry with plenty of peanuts, mixed vegetable stir fry, Pad Thai (stir fry noodles), Thai-style fried chicken, Thai fish cakes, Thai-style pork skewers and Vas’s own favourite, green papaya salad. Most dishes have options of chicken, beef, pork, prawn or vegetables.

A lot of people order a selection of starters or a mix of starters and mains to share together.

the chilli count to suit: “This is proper Thai food, but people can choose their heat,” she said. The general rule of thumb is one chilli for mild, two for medium and three for hot.

Zaab doesn’t sell alcohol and the ‘bring your own’ corkage charge is £5 per table: “People prefer it because they can bring their favourite wine or beer and it also saves them money,” said Vas. The restaurant is open six days a week, closed on Mondays.

Opening hours are 11am to 2.30pm and 5pm to 8pm (last food orders) Tuesday to Friday and 12 noon to 8pm for final orders on Saturday and Sunday.

Because everything is cooked to order, it’s advisable for large parties to book ahead. Zaab offers a takeaway service for people to pop in and there is also home delivery via Deliveroo.

Now that Vas has had a taste of running her own restaurant, she’s already thinking to the future: “We’d love a place in a prominent location – and one with a bigger kitchen!”

But for now, she’s happy to be doing what she loves at Zaab: “Food is my passion. I cook the food that I like to eat and it’s nice that other people like it too. When I see what people write about my food in their reviews, it makes me feel very happy.”

Betty steps out in style thanks to Foot Solutions!

When retired photographer Betty Fox was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last year she decided to go for a long walk every day to improve her health.

Having been a keen sailor for most of her life she enjoyed her hour-long walks beside the sea, taking in the coastal path and Mount Batten pier.

Then in October while on one of her regular walks her left foot inexplicably gave way under her. “I didn’t fall, trip or twist my ankle, it simply gave way and left me with a painful limp,” said Betty, who lives in Plymstock.

“I couldn’t walk without a limp after that and it really restricted what I could do,” she added.

A few weeks later Betty was reading her Plymouth Magazine and saw the Foot Solutions advertisement, which featured a testimonial from one of their customers.

“I was in the city soon after that, limping all the way as usual, and decided to visit the Foot Solutions store in Royal Parade to see if they could help me.

“I was seen by a very helpful member of staff who carried out a series of tests and then talked me through exactly what had happened to my left foot and less badly to my right foot,” added Betty.

Top violinist Benjam Talented violinist Benjamin Baker is returning to Plymouth for a concert in March.

Europe’s only

He will appear with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday March 14 in Plymouth Guildhall at 7.30pm, for a programme of Wagner, Rimsky-Korsakov, Bliss, Saint-Saens, Arvo Part and Tchaikovsky, featuring violinist Benjamin Baker.

The varied programme begins with the rousing Ride of the Valkyries from Wagner’s epic Ring cycle, followed by a lesser known work by Rimsky-Korsakov, the symphonic poem Sadko, which later inspired an opera of the same name.

Next in the programme is the music from the film Things to Come, which was composed by Arthur Bliss in 1936. At the time this work was considered ground-breaking as it was the first instance where a recognised composer had been asked to contribute a musical score to a dramatic film.

Benjamin Baker joins the orchestra to play Saint-Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Fratres by Arvo Part.

Saint-Saens originally wrote this work for the Spanish virtuoso violinist Sarasate, who performed it often and was partly responsible for its early popularity.

It was so popular that both Debussy and Bizet made their own arrangements of the work. Composed by Estonian composer Arvo Part in 1977, Fratres has been called a ‘mesmerising set of variations on a six-bar theme’ which moves from frantic activity to sublime stillness. Born in New Zealand in 1990 and having studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and Royal College of Music, Benjamin has recently appeared with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Mozart Players and Royal Philharmonic Concert orchestra performing in major venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Bath and Gstaad Festivals.

The concluding work of the concert is the Swan Lake Suite from Tchaikovsky’s extremely well-known ballet of the same name, which was first performed in 1877. Many of the most memorable themes from the ballet are featured in this suite, so it provides a wonderful flavour of the full work.

Jazz duo Pete Oxley and Nick Meier will be performing works from their scintillating new album, ‘The Colours Of Time,’ at the latest International Concert series event in March.

Oxley and Meier aim to recreate live their broad palette of sounds, bringing at least ten differing guitars with them (nylon seven-string, steel string, fretless, 11-string fretless, sitarguitar, 12 string, and more. Expect lush and scintillating soundscapes ranging from Turkey to Brazil!

Planning for the Future Few of us want to think that there may come a time when we lose our mental capacity or become physically incapable, and it Martin Weeks can be daunting to think how we would cope if this does happen, which often makes it an easier thought to ignore.

However, it is extremely important to consider and there are ways you can plan ahead and ease the potential burden on yourself and your relatives.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) document for property and financial affairs lets you appoint someone you trust to make financial decisions for you if the time ever comes where you no longer have the capacity to make your own decisions. By creating this document you can ensure that these important decisions will always be handled by someone who has

your best interests at heart.

You can appoint one or more people to make decisions for you, and these people are referred to as “attorneys” within your LPA. Your attorney(s) must be over 18 years of age and not bankrupt.

If you create an LPA, you do not lose the ability to make your own decisions and you can choose whether it can be used either before, or only when you lose mental capacity.

While you still have mental capacity, your attorneys can only act with your consent.

Titanic charity dinner Plymouth Cruise Liner Volunteers and Titanic and the City of Plymouth are holding a Titanic Anniversary Dinner on April 14 hosted by the Duke of Cornwall Hotel with proceeds going to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

April 14 marks the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

The surviving stewardesses who came to Plymouth stayed at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel and organisers will be celebrating with a five course meal taken from the 11-courses from the menu on that frightful night.

The entertainment on the night, has been specially chosen to bring back the ambience of a cruise with White Star Line.

It is hoped to raise awareness of MND, highlighting Plymouth artist Ron Wheeler, who is currently living with MND. Ron has a

His daughter Chelsea, who won Young Carer of the Year 2017, will be launching the new Plymouth branch of MND at the event.

In a rare move for a department store, House of Fraser is hosting a display about The Box and ‘Museum On Tour’ programme, complete with film clips from the South West Film and Television Archive on floor 4.

On Floor 5 visitors will be able to view the ‘Plymouth – From Destruction to Construction’ exhibition, which explores the devastation caused by the Blitz and the radical new plan that was developed to rebuild it afterwards. The exhibition, which was previously on display at the Council House, has been given a revamp in line with its move to House of Fraser, and now includes information about the store itself.

The company, which now has over 20 branches in Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Hampshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, was established in 1990 by managing director Ian Gosden.

While trading as a financial adviser, Ian found his clients regularly asking him about general insurance products and in response to their enquiries he established his first agencies with some of the nation’s largest insurers.

Other financial advisors, seeing the benefit of providing general insurance products direct to their clients, asked to use Ian’s agencies on a split commission basis. The success of this concept resulted in Higos employing it’s first full time staff member in June 1991, just nine months after the company was established.

In November 1995, the company moved to new premises to house its growing workforce and in 2001 a second site was opened to accommodate new training, HR and IT facilities for the then 60 strong team. In 2004 a marketing department was established helping to raise the profile of Higos on a local and national scale. In 2006, Higos opened its first High Street branch in Glastonbury, Somerset.

Since then Higos has continued to increase its high street presence, acquiring additional insurance shops in locations across the region.

Now employing over 300 staff, the company continues to grow through acquisition, direct business, its agent network and their underwriting facility.

Higos has received a number of insurance industry and regional accolades. In December 2012 Higos was named Independent Regional Broker of the Year at the Insurance Times Awards in London.

The company acquired Plymouth-based Denmans Insurance Services in 2016, which was already based in Mutley Plain.

The acquisition led to Higos relocating to a new branch in Mutley Plain, alongside staff from the Higos branch in Plymstock. Both Denmans and Plymstock operations were closed and brought under one roof at 47, Mutley Plain.

Ian Gosden said: “We are committed to delivering our promise of providing a first class service and expert insurance advice in the Plymouth and South region. We are delighted to have officially opened our new Plymouth branch and look forward to serving both new and existing clients.”

The new branch is much larger and newly-refurbished, allowing Higos to continue their expansion in the region.

Higos’ staff will continue to provide expert advice on all types of insurance including home, motor, travel and commercial insurance.

All staff working from the previous Denmans and Plymstock branches have moved across to the new threestorey premises.

Family care is at the heart of the service at Knapman Family Funeral Directors A family-run firm of funeral directors has opened in Plymouth which offers a holistic service for families coming to terms with the loss of a loved one.

The motto at Knapman Family Independent Funeral Directors in Mutley is “Our family, serving yours” – and that service extends to offering emotional support.

The firm, at the top end of Mutley Plain in Mannamead Road, opened last year. It is headed by Cassie Knapman, who is joined by daughters Emma and Charlie, son-in-law Marc McClelland (Emma’s husband), and family friend Stan Rendell.

For Cassie and Marc, setting up a family firm of funeral directors seemed a natural progression, having had previous experience elsewhere.

As well as providing personalised funerals that reflect a loved one’s unique life, they also offer bereavement counselling from experienced counsellors, Anna Batey, Sharon Stallard and Linda Ojinnaka.

A free 30-minute consultation is available, offering a chance to talk to someone in a safe space. The premises, over three floors, has counselling and wellbeing treatment rooms such as Reiki, for those who feel they might benefit.

For Cassie, it’s a case of offering the sort of support and service she was looking for when her husband Robert died in 2013, following a long illness. Cassie, a well-known businesswoman in the city, looked after Robert for 12 years after he suffered an injury in an accident at work: “It would have been absolutely wonderful to have had this sort of holistic service when Robert was ill,” she said. “A place where families know they are more than welcome to come in and feel listened to in a welcoming environment.”

It’s also a fresh, colourful environment – deliberately so: “Do families really want to come in and see black everywhere?” said Cassie. “Families need to feel comfortable bringing their children in, and traditionally, funeral directors’ offices can be quite scary. It’s not like that here at all. We’re real people and we have an open door policy.”

To take as much of the strain as possible off families, Knapman Family offers an all-inclusive service.

Funeral services start from £1,750, while a direct cremation is £1,350. But, Marc explained: “We don’t offer the usual range of packages – all of our funerals are bespoke, because everyone is different. We sit down with a blank piece of paper and create the funeral for each individual, to suit their requirements.”

For added peace of mind, the firm has just launched the Knapman Family Guarantee. This ties a price for 12 months, with no obligation and no requirement for a deposit or instalments: “These days, people like to express their own funeral wishes and this allows that, but payment is done in exactly the same as usual,” said Marc.

Steve said: “Robotic lawnmowers do all the work, cutting the lawn several times a week, saving huge amounts of time and effort for homeowners.

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre Spring seems to be finally on its way and it’s very welcome and long overdue. It has seemed like such a long winter with no end in sight, but at long last, things seems to be moving on.

All the staff are geared up and ready for spring at the Garden Centre, because we have been hard at work and rejuvenated the plant area with a good old spring clean, a new layout and we have filled the benches with lots of fresh, new and exciting stock.

I have been very busy, flying out to visit growers in Holland Nurseries at Pistoia in Italy and Italy and hand selecting a large number of the stock. This has given me the chance to see and purchase some unusual items of stock that I otherwise wouldn’t have.

The first buying trip I went on was to Italy in late January.

I went to an area in Tuscany renowned for its plant growing called Pistoia. The climate there is favourable, and the soil is rich and fertile. Plant growing is the top industry there, and every piece of land is used effectively and efficiently.

If it is isn’t being used for commercial crops, then the locals and the workers are using the road side verges for growing food crops. The scale of production is enormous.

I was warned before I went that I would be stunned by the sheer vastness of the nurseries and I was. The nurseries were far bigger than anything I could have imagined - effectively a large town built around the industry. It is very impressive, everything is in perfectly straight rows and blocks, the plants are in perfect health and are immaculate and there isn’t a weed in sight.

The quality of the stock is superb and so is the size. They specialise in specimen plants, topiary, instant hedging, gap fillers and focal points. They supply garden centres throughout Europe and the Middle East, five star hotels, high end shopping malls, sports stadiums, leisure complexes and many more large scale projects.

I have also injected a bit of fun into the plant area with some giant topiary flowers in the plant area and topiary knife and forks just outside the coffee shop. These are very impressive and have taken years of work to look so good.

From Holland I have brought in a great range of seasonal spring flowering evergreen shrubs and plants, but the plants I’m most pleased with are our new range of fruit plants.

These are all pot grown plants that are excellently priced and superb quality. All the varieties are perfectly suited to growing in the open ground or equally happy in pots.

Three new varieties worth noting are the thornless, dwarf Blackberry ‘Little Black Prince’, the thornless, dwarf Raspberry, ‘Little Red Princess’ and the red fleshed Apple ‘Red Love’. These are all dwarfing varieties that are happily grown in pots with a good yield of fruit. They are self-fertile, so don’t need another pollinating partner.

The first batch of Dianthus ‘Pink Kisses’ is now in store, this will be the first batch of many more to come. This delightful little pink has risen in popularity since its introduction a few years ago. Its compact growing habit, evergreen foliage and long flowering season and made it a hit. It is low maintenance, easy to grow, loves full sun and will grow well in pots, rockeries, baskets and borders.

There is so much new stock arriving at the Garden Centre every week which I have carefully selected to get the best quality available and to get the varieties that cater for every garden style. So whether you are doing a garden from scratch, plugging a few gaps or are just after an interesting specimen for the patio, come on in and see what we have to offer.

They are perfectly suited to life in a pot, where they can be under planted year round with seasonal bedding.

For customers who are after some unusual screening in their garden, or a large specimen conifer to add impact an instant maturity to the garden, I have three varieties of mature and unusual conifers that would be perfect for the job.

The first is Cupressus Arizonica Fastigiata, the blue Arizona Cypress. This is a beautiful conifer with an upright, narrow, conical habit with stunning blue scented foliage. The colour really has to be seen to be believed. The second Fun shaped topiary at the Garden is Thuja Occidentalis Centre Golden Smaragd, this is a slow growing, reasonably compact conifer that makes a fantastic hedge. It only needs to be pruned once a year and it is a beautifully vibrant yellow that contrasts well against blue foliage and deep green foliage.

For a truly unique hedge that looks amazing is alternating Golden Smaragd with the regular green Thuja Smaragd or with the third conifer I have in, Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Columnaris Glauca.
