canes, look for healthy plump buds and scrape some bark away with your finger nail, if it is green underneath, they are still alive and healthy, if it is brown, avoid them. Prune apple trees and pear trees whilst they’re still dormant. Trim about a third of the overall growth off, cut out any dead, diseased or over lapping branches and prune any long wispy growth to just about a fat, stout bud. Leave plum trees, cherry trees and apricots until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to Silver Leaf disease. Trim your blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework, clear the centre of the bushes so that the basic shape of the bush is goblet shaped. This allows plenty of air flow through the bushes, reducing the chances of disease and allows plenty of light to help ripen fruit. Currant bushes can also still be planted between now and the spring. Check the weather for frost and protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines. If it is cold and no pollinating insects are present, then you may need to hand pollinate with a paintbrush to get a crop. These stone fruit trees can also be planted now. www.cornerstonevision.com
