An inspiration for all of us...

This month’s front cover features Toby Gorniak, the popular co-founder of Plymouth’s highly-successful Street Factory and sets the scene for a number of inspirational stories in this issue.

Toby and his wife Jo launched Street Factory more than 10 years ago and have inspired literally thousands of youngsters in the decade since. Toby has been honoured for his efforts with an MBE and he has been talking to Laura Joint about his life in Plymouth and how the city has inspired him. You can read his story on page 14.

Another inspiring individual featured in this edition is Hannah Daragon, who overcame illness, depression and prejudice to set up her own online business selling party games.

She has been rewarded for her determination with the ‘Inspiration Award’ from industry giant eBay. She dedicated her award to all those people who like her, face battles to overcome illness and discrimination.

Former Baptist minister Andrew Gardiner is someone else who has had to face his own battle over the last two years.

Andrew was diagnosed with bowel cancer in May 2016 and has found hope in the darkness by writing song lyrics, which led to him appearing on TV and radio.

In the interview on page 38 he explains how his Christian faith and the support of friends and family have helped to sustain him.

Finally, the support and encouragement of thousands of football fans is helping Plymouth Argyle’s popular defender Ryan Edwards in his own battle against testicular cancer.

A former Plymouth teacher has overcome bowel disease, depression and discrimination to win a national business award.

Hannah Daragon, 36, from Plympton, overcame Crohn’s Disease, mental breakdown and the end of her teaching career after childbirth to win the ‘Inspiration Award’ in eBay’s National Business Awards.

She was presented with her Award at eBay’s HQ in London in January. She had previously won an ebay ‘Be Your Own Boss Award’ in recognition of her growing online business.

Her business, Hannah’s Games, sells party games she writes herself on eBay, Amazon and her own website, www. hannahsgames.co.uk. This Christmas, she sold over 11,000 festive games and her Hen Party range sells in excess of five hundred units every week, all from Hannah’s home in Plympton.

During her acceptance speech, Hannah donned a pair of grubby old slippers to represent the reality of battling chronic illness, explaining: “It took a long spell in grotty slippers just like these to realise I could lead, develop, be strategic and successful AND be a devoted mum on MY terms.”

She dedicated her Award to people whose lives are blighted by ill health, adding: “For every person fighting bowel disease, depression, discrimination - or the myriad of other imposters who steal our self-worth and our life-chances. This award is for you. You are fantastic and there is life beyond.”

Hannah decided to start her new venture away from her demanding teaching position in order to find a better worklife balance for her young family.

Despite the change in pace, type of work and lifestyle, Hannah puts a lot of her success down to being able to apply transferable skills from one industry into another.

She is eager for people who are considering taking a

similar leap from employee to business owner to find encouragement in this.

Making the move from being a hobby-seller to an established, full-time retailer has not been without its challenges. Hannah describes both her biggest asset and challenge, “You have to trust that your team can run your business as well as you can in your absence. They are able to free me up, allowing me to bring the most value to the business in the limited time that I have. Time is an ongoing challenge and my team stop me from needing to work 24/7.”

Hannah found that as her start-up venture began to flourish, ‘time’ remained a constant constraining factor for the growth of the business. Hannah was spending too much time learning business acumen from scratch but knew there must be more efficient training resources available.

With support, advice and mentoring from business experts at the Heart of the South West Growth Hub, Hannah saw her party games business go from strength to strength.

Launched in July last year, the Ebay for Business Awards were the marketplace’s first ever search for the best small business success stories in the UK. Hundreds of inspirational entries came from across the country, from the top talent already trading on eBay to bricks-and-mortar businesses looking to take their first steps online.

Over 200,000 small businesses already trade on eBay in the UK. Rob Hattrell, vice president of eBay in the UK, said: “Through the eBay for Business Awards, we’ve heard from the best and the brightest businesses across the country. As a business, we are all looking forward to meeting and working with our sellers to help them through the next stage of their business journey.’

Will I get paid?

We pay a generous weekly allowance, an example of this basic weekly allowance is between £350 and £410 for one child.

Will a police record stop me from fostering?

Not necessarily. The law states that the only criminal conviction that prevent people from fostering are those that relate to an offence against children or a sexual offence. Minor offences should not count against you in your application to foster.

Fostering involves the whole family. It can be tough for children who find themselves sharing their parents with children who have led very different lives. However, many children also say that they have enjoyed their parents’ fostering and learnt a lot from it. We offer regular groups for sons and daughters.

How Plymouth children’s author and illustrator Simon James brought The Boy from Mars to life – five years on!

Plymouth’s award-winning, million-selling children’s author and illustrator Simon James has so many ideas, he can’t keep up with them: “I have a backlog of ideas,” he explained, “and because it takes such a time – about a year – to complete a picture book, the ideas just keep on growing.”

PLYMOUTH MATTERS From being a teenager practicing hip hop in his local park, to inviting other youngsters to join in with him, to setting up the Street Factory Community Interest Company, to being recognised in the New Year’s Honours List for his work in the community.

That’s some journey for Toby Gorniak, MBE – and it’s far from over yet. Because in 2018, he’s working to transform the Street Factory building in Millbay into the UK’s first hip hop theatre – an all-singing, all-dancing space for local people to learn and perform creative arts using the five elements of hip hop culture: respect, peace, love, unity, and fun.

Toby and his wife Jo established Street Factory in 2007, since when it has grown and grown. Last year, they took over the old Octagon Brewery building in Sawrey Street. The main part of the building is a huge, open space. On one of the walls are the plans designed by local architect Elise Wilkes-Brand, which Toby is determined will become a reality by the end of this year. The plans include space for other arts, media and computer skills as well as dance and music.

A Crowdfunder was launched to help raise the money needed and the project has also had the backing of businesses and leaders in the city: “Everyone has been so supportive,” said Toby. “But we are still looking for sponsorship from organisations that want to invest in our local community, either financially or with building skills.

“This is definitely going to happen in 2018. I want the theatre and all the other facilities to be ready by Christmas.”

And when Toby sets his mind to achieving something, he usually does it. You only need to look at his own personal story to understand that.

When his family arrived in Plymouth from Poland in 2001, he was a 14-year-old in a new place with no friends: “I couldn’t speak English,” he said. “I had to learn everything from scratch – the language, the culture – but it’s where all of this started for me, really, because I used to dance every day.

“I just went to Freedom Fields Park and danced! Then the local kids all joined in. They wanted to learn hip hop, so I showed them – and everything happened from that.”

Perhaps the biggest turning point for Toby came as a teenager when his youth worker persuaded him to see a show at Theatre Royal Plymouth: “Plymouth gave me so much when I came here and I have a lot of people to thank.

My biggest inspiration was my youth worker. She suggested going to the theatre and I thought ‘no way, I’m not doing that’

because I came from a culture where we never went to places like that. But she took me and it opened my eyes. I wanted to aspire to that.”

Toby had another ‘nudge’ from the community centre at Greenbank: “They helped make all of this happen because they asked if I would teach dance at the youth club. Other youth clubs in the city heard about it so I started to teach there as well.”

Toby was working at the Theatre Royal’s TR2 at Cattedown when he met Jo and they decided to set up Street Factory.

It has reached Sawrey Street via previous bases in Mount Gould, Coburg Street and, for a year, at the School of Creative Arts directly opposite where they are now.

Street Factory offers street dance, hip hop, breakin’ and poppin’ classes for children aged 4-7, and aged 8 and over. Street Factory sponsors those unable to afford it and currently, 20 children are being funded. There are also pop-in classes for over-18s – visit the website for all the information.

Toby also works with local schools, colleges and community groups to devise pieces of hip hop theatre that explore issues such as bullying, diversity, equality and self-esteem.

“Over the past 10 years, we’ve developed new techniques and methods,” said Toby. “It’s not just about dance or being creative or musical. It’s about incorporating traditional values.

We’ve had literally thousands of people through our doors.

Some are now working in the arts in London or in Bristol.

Others have set up their own businesses.

“They’re professionals, they’re social workers, they’re plumbers, they’re plasterers, they’re living successful lives, and that’s down to their dedication. I feel super-proud when they keep in touch and tell us how they’re doing.”

The theatre, says Toby, will help to keep talent in the city: “Our vision is that local young people can learn creative arts and get the chance to perform here so they don’t have to move away. And because of the life skills we’re also teaching them, they will have the chance to become our city’s next leaders and our next business owners.”

And he added: “Hip hop saved my life. It’s given me principles to live by. And now Street Factory CIC is doing the same thing for others. It’s transforming lives by giving them the opportunities and the purpose that I was given.”

Hip hop theatre architect outlines ‘inspiring’ project The plans for the Street Factory building have been designed by local architect Elise Wilkes-Brand. She said: “Working with Street Factory on this creative and inspiring project really demonstrates how architecture can be used to better the local community.

“As a dedicated hip hop venue which will include an accessible hip hop theatre, dance studio, recording studio, community cafe and teaching hub, the project offers much-needed support for the young people of Plymouth and the local community.

“Toby and Jo have energised and engaged closely with the team to really explore what the design of this venue will mean to its users. The designs celebrate and enhance the unique industrial character of the old brewery, whilst incorporating the hip hop identity of Street Factory into the very fabric of the building they occupy.

Plymouth couple turn a dream into reality at The Fig Tree @ 36 There’s a sign above the specials board at The Fig Tree @ 36 which says: “Wish It, Dream It, Do It.” Well, the restaurant’s owners, Ryan Marsland and fiancé Tanya Poole, have done just that.

As soon as they spotted that the Stonehouse premises – formerly The Samphire Bush in Admiralty Street – was available, they knew that now was the time to realise their dream.

“Getting our own restaurant was always on our radar to do. We were going to wait until our two children started school, but when this opportunity came up, we thought ‘let’s do it’,” said Ryan, who was previously head chef for three years at Quay 33 on Southside Street.

Ten days after getting the keys, they were open for business.

The five months since opening in September has been a whirlwind.

In that short space of time, they’ve achieved a Gold Award with Taste of the West and been visited by a Michelin inspector which they hope will lead to a second visit soon and a listing in the prestigious restaurant guide. And the restaurant is also in the 2018 Trencherman’s Guide, out in March.

Not a bad start!

However, it’s anything but stuffy at The Fig Tree @ 36, where the ethos is to offer delicious food that’s affordable: “We aim to produce top-rated food for everyone to enjoy in a relaxing atmosphere,” said Ryan. “And our Hummus with bread customers have fed back that they really like how warm and friendly the restaurant is.”

Ryan has been a chef all his working life, following in his father’s footsteps: “I was 13 when I started helping my dad out and I went into my apprenticeship as soon as I left school,” he said.

Having his own restaurant is a chance to create the sort of food he loves, using largely locally-sourced produce – and

every single dish is made at the restaurant, including the breads and ice-cream.

Ryan never puts a dish onto the menu without first asking for Tanya’s input, as she explained: “I look at it from a customer’s perspective so if something isn’t quite right, we can tweak it.”

And the menu isn’t set in stone: “We have one customer who loves roast chicken, so we put that on the menu when she books ahead,” said Ryan. “We accommodate customers as much as possible.

For example, we can create something different for our vegetarian and vegan diners.”

Meat dishes include Cornish pork belly with olive oil mash, greens, and a quince puree; home-smoked, 8-hour braised brisket with herb mash, cabbage and bacon; Cornish turkey with pancetta, chestnut stuffing ballotine, butternut puree, roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables; and Creedy Carver free-range duck from East Devon with confit duck leg, parsnip rosti, spiced red cabbage and a red wine sauce.

Among the fish and seafood options on the menu are Plymouth fish stew with home-made bread and aioli; and Plymouth haddock and mussel risotto with a bouillabaisse sauce.

Vegetarian choices include driftwood goats cheese and chestnut risotto with wild garlic pesto, smoked almonds and herb crumb; and a salad with beetroot, slow-cooked tomatoes, hummus, olives and mint.

The specials board depends entirely on what’s available from the fish market or farms, which means the specials are decided on the day.

Desserts include chocolate orange brownie with raspberry sorbet; chocolate pot served with salted caramel and biscotti for dunking; sticky toffee ginger pudding; and home-made ice-cream.

Mains start at £14, and the most expensive dish on the menu, the Creedy Carver duck, is £19. A set menu is also available at lunch from Wednesday to Saturday and from 5.30pm to 7pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays – two courses are £15 and three courses are £18. And there is a Sunday lunch set menu at the same prices. Wines are from £16 a bottle and local ales are on the drinks menu.

The Fig Tree @ 36 has signed the Sustainable Fish Cities pledge, which in Plymouth is led by the National Marine Aquarium. Ryan said: “Sourcing local produce isn’t just about food sustainability, it’s also about supporting other local businesses and jobs in our community.”

Ryan and Tanya are about to create an al fresco dining area in the rear courtyard, where the fig tree that gives the restaurant its name can be found: “It’ll be a lovely little spot to enjoy a meal and a drink when the weather’s nice,” said Tanya.

Another nice touch is keeping some artwork on an interior wall which was done when it was the Trattoria Pescatore restaurant: “We found it under the wallpaper when we were

redecorating,” said Tanya. “We’ve put frames on top of them and it has gone down well with some of our regulars, who can remember when it was Trattoria Pescatore.”

The couple have taken on eight staff and, while Ryan heads up the kitchen, Tanya looks after front of house: “You could say we’re very busy at the Pork belly is a popular favourite at The moment, having two Fig Tree@36 children aged one and three and a new restaurant!” said Tanya. “But we’re really enjoying everything.

We already have a lot of repeat customers and we’re getting some lovely feedback. So far, so good, and we’re very excited about 2018!”

Lunch service is 12 to 2.30pm from Wednesday to Saturday, dinner service starts from 5.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and Sunday opening is 12-3pm.

Charity recital by leading harpist Elizabeth-Jane Renowned harpist and composer Elizabeth-Jane Baldry presents a sparkling harp recital in February as part of the International Concert Series.

The recital, in aid of Parkinson’s UK, takes place at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel at 3pm on Sunday February 18 and will feature an entertaining journey through the history of harp music.

Elizabeth-Jane’s uniquely rich tone on the harp has graced several film and TV soundtracks and her performances have been broadcast on the BBC and many other television and radio stations around the world. She is the world’s only silent movie harpist, creating riveting accompaniment to early film.

Dance teacher Simaraʼs best move was a visit to Foot Solutions!

Popular Plymouth dance teacher Simara Winter feared her career would be over after she started to experience excruciating pain in her feet.

More than 20 years teaching a wide variety of dance techniques to children, young people and adults had taken its toll.

Simara said: “Teaching tap, ballet and contemporary dance techniques inevitably means I have to spend a lot of time on my toes and balls of my feet.

“A few months ago I started to experience intense pain in my feet which really affected my dance teaching and also my ability to keep up with the latest qualifications, which are an important part of my job.”

Simara went to her GP and later to the Cumberland Centre, but the pain continued. A second visit and X-ray at the Cumberland Centre revealed she had sustained stress fractures in the sesamoid bone under her big toes.

“By this time the pain was keeping me awake at night and I really feared that my career as a dance teacher was coming to an end,” added Simara.

Then her mother suggested that she visit Foot Solutions in Royal Parade - which one of the nurses at the Cumberland Centre also recommended. “A number of my mum’s friends had a positive experience at Foot Solutions and the nurse told me they had helped her with a hip problem.”

Simara visited Foot Solutions and was impressed with all the technology and expertise involved. “The scans and tests they carried out showed I was putting too much of my weight on my toes and forefeet.”

Foot Solutions recommended custom made insoles to provide support for her heels and to correct her posture. “After they arrived it took me a couple of days to adjust to my different posture - but the results were amazing. The pain, swelling and redness have all disappeared. I can use the insoles in my tap shoes, trainers and other footwear - it has made a huge difference to my life.”

Charity concert features Philharmonic Choir and the Orchestra of the Band of the Royal Marines Two jewels of the local music scene - Plymouth Philharmonic Choir with the Orchestra of the Band of HM Royal Marines - are coming together for a concert to be remembered in March.

It is all too rare that Plymouth Philharmonic Choir gets the chance to join forces with the Orchestra of the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, Plymouth, but they will be performing together again on Sunday March 18 in Plymouth Guildhall at 7.30pm.

The concert will be conducted by the choir’s own musical director Christopher Fletcher who will share the podium with Royal Marines Major Huw Williams and Sergeant Sam Hairsine.

A varied programme has been chosen to have wide appeal and includes Charles Villiers Stanford’s Songs of the Fleet, John Rutter’s Gloria, Karl Jenkins’ Gloria and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs.

Proceeds from this concert will go to the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, which is the principal charity of the Royal Navy, supporting sailors, marines and their families, for life.

Tickets for previous joint concerts with the Marines have sold out very quickly, so early purchase is highly recommended.

The company has expanded its membership and welcome newcomer Cairo McFarlane in the lead role of Delores Van Cartier whilst studying for her degree in Musical Theatre Performance at Plymouth University.

Diane Hooper returns from her role as the scheming Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd to play a completely different character, the daunting Mother Superior.

When Delores, a worldly nightclub singer witnesses a mob crime, the police hide her for her own protection in a most unlikely place, disguised as Sister Mary Clarence in the Convent of The Angels under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior.

Here Sister Mary brings her own form of divine musical inspiration to convent life with hilarious and thought provoking consequences.

This ‘feel good‘ musical is full of stirring Gospel and 1970’s disco song and dance and is a testimony to the power of friendship, sisterhood and music.

The spectacular Cornish Man Engine is back on the road this Easter - and will be in Tavistock on Tuesday April 3.

It is part of an extensive ‘Resurrection Tour’ which starts in the South West and then heads to Wales and other parts of the UK. Powered by Volvo, the largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain toured the length of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site last summer, unearthing a deep lode of passion and pride.

Now, the award-winning colossal miner is preparing for his Resurrection Tour across Cornwall and west Devon, before he drives further, into Somerset, South Wales and up to the north of England.

The instigator of the 11.2m high Man Engine, Will Coleman of Golden Tree Productions, said: “Our big boy is setting off in the footsteps of the Cousin Jacks, but he needs to say a proper farewell to Cornwall, and our friends just over the Tamar in Tavistock, before he blazes a trail into Somerset, Wales and across the UK.”

KF Kitchens make it 3rd time lucky for Jude and Andy!

After 20 years with their dark oak and black granite kitchen, Andy and Jude from Yelverton decided it was time to brighten things up a bit with a brand new kitchen.

But where to go, with so many options to choose from? For Andy and Jude, it was a case of third time lucky when they visited KF Kitchens’ Plymouth showroom at Faraday Mill in Cattedown.

“We’d already had two companies in to see us,” explained Jude. “I was adamant that I wanted everything to go – except the Rangemaster cooker.

they both came back with their designs and they’d basically built the kitchen around the Rangemaster. The lay-out of the kitchen was more or less the same.

“Then Nathan from KF Kitchens came in and put me right straight away!

He said ‘that’s got to go’. Trust me, you can’t have that cooker there.

You’ve got to be facing your garden and your guests’. So with Nathan it wasn’t a case of just coming in and measuring up. He was very passionate about his work and you could tell that he loves his job.

“It was his ideas and enthusiasm that

sold the kitchen, really. His ideas were so different to ours, but he was right and we were wrong. He was inspirational.

“They did the whole works themselves, not just the fitting, but the flooring, the plastering, the plumbing, the decorating and the electrics.

Once you have a price that’s it, there are no nasty shocks with bits being added on along the way.

“They also organised the Silestone worktops from Mayflower Stone.

Everything went like clockwork. It was a three-week job and there were no gaps. And our kitchen fitter, Gary, was absolutely brilliant.”

The work was carried out in the Spring.

A few months on, are they still happy with their new kitchen? “Oh yes, we love it,” said Jude. “You can see how light the room is now. And it’s dead easy to keep tidy because we now have so much more storage space. It’s going to make cooking at Christmas a whole lot easier, too.

“It’s just a beautiful room and we’re so pleased that we’ve done it. And that we listened to Nathan’s advice!

Artist Sara Bowler

Exhibition will uncover the hidden history of Looe Street Artist Sara Bowler is investigating the hidden histories of Plymouth Arts Centre’s location in Looe Street, for a new exhibition opening in February.

The Looe Street Detectives are a group of local residents, led by Sara, who are exploring the influence of Plymouth Arts Centre over the past 70 years, as well as the people who have lived, worked in and visited the site throughout the last 500 years.

Visitors are invited to explore the activities and lives of the previous occupants of Looe Street, and their impact on the wider world.

The exhibition will contain a large timeline on which people are encouraged to share their own memories and anecdotes.

Plymouth Arts Centre’s current location was once part of The Virginia House Settlement, a social welfare centre set up by Nancy Astor in the 1920s.

Looe Street Detective Pat Green, who has family connections with the area, said: “Virginia House played a very important part during the blitz as a shelter for those who had lost their homes, my family being one of the many families.

My mother went onto the roof there and watched Plymouth burning with me in her arms.”

Plymouth Arts Centre was one of seven arts centres set up around the country in 1947 with funds from the newly established Arts Council of Great Britain. The artist, Beryl Cook had her first exhibition at Plymouth Arts Centre in 1975.

The Looe Street Detectives have discovered that Joyce Grenfell, comedian, actress and niece of Lady Astor, visited Plymouth Arts Centre in 1950 to promote her film, The Happiest Days of Your Life.

The Detectives have also unearthed fascinating insights into the people and events that made up this part of Plymouth through the centuries. 38 Looe Street was once part of a pub called The Pope’s Head, which was frequented by Thomas Dunckerley, the illegitimate son of George III. Dr Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds also visited the inn in 1762.

Research is central to Bowler’s artistic practice.

She investigates how evidence of former use and occupation of places resonates through time. Drawn to ordinary looking places - buildings, streets, fields - she is curious about their histories, wondering what has happened there and what evidence remains. This exhibition is the third incarnation of the Looe Street Detectives project begun in 2013.

‘Museum On Tour’ at House of Fraser Shoppers and visitors to one of Plymouth’s flagship stores can now experience the ‘Museum On Tour’ programme.

Objects, images, film footage and what’s on information will be displayed in selected areas on Floors 4 and 5 of House of Fraser, Royal Parade and will remain on show throughout 2018.

The ‘Museum On Tour’ programme includes exhibitions, events, partnership projects and community initiatives.

It’s running in a range of offsite venues while the City Museum and Art Gallery’s building is closed for the development of The Box. In a rare move for a department store, House of Fraser is hosting a display about The Box and ‘Museum On Tour’ programme, complete with film clips from the South West Film and Television Archive on floor 4.

On Floor 5 visitors will be able to view the ‘Plymouth – From Destruction to Construction’ exhibition, which explores the devastation caused by the Blitz and the radical new plan that was developed to rebuild it afterwards.The exhibition, which was previously on display at the Council House, has been given a revamp in line with its move to House of Fraser, and now includes information about the store itself.

When Andrew Gardiner was diagnosed with cancer in May 2016, he picked up his pen – or iPad, to be more accurate – and he started writing song lyrics.

Andrew, who was Minister at Hope Baptist Church in Peverell at the time, remembers the moment clearly: “It was September 2016, at 2 o’clock in the morning and I was on the oncology ward at Derriford Hospital,” he tells Plymouth Magazine.

“I was lying there, in the ward, and the words came to me out of the darkness – my own inner darkness I think, as well as the actual darkness.”

The result was a song called True Identity which became an iTune hit in 2017, leading to Andrew’s appearance on BBC Radio 2’s Good Morning Sunday programme and on the Songs of Praise Christmas show on BBC 1 in December.

Since that first song, Andrew has written the words for another 40 to 50. Three of them have now been put to music and recorded by a singer-songwriter friend called Luke, who has his own studio in London.

The third song, I Am Held By You, has just been released as a single and is available as a download or CD. Writing is keeping Andrew busy, which, after 23 years as a Minister, is just how he likes it. He was Youth Minister at Mutley Baptist Church from 1994 to 2003, when he moved to Hope Baptist Church in Peverell Park Road. Because of his illness, he had to step down recently.

His work now is for the new ministry he has set up, called Rising Hope – also the name the song recordings are released under. HQ for Rising Hope is his garden office at home, where he writes the songs and poems that “keep coming into my head”.

“People have said to me ‘we’ve never seen this in you before’ and I’ve said ‘I don’t know that I’ve seen it in myself either’. It seems I can write a song in 20 minutes. Nobody is more surprised about that than me!”

Andrew is equally shocked by the response to the songs: “One thing has led to another, it’s been crazy. From being ill, to writing songs all hours of the day and night, to being on local radio, to being interviewed by Clare Balding on BBC Radio 2 and then getting a call from Songs of Praise.

“They rang me on a Monday and they came down to film

It was all very last minute, but we put a call out on the Church’s social media pages and 120 people turned up for the recording. That was amazing, but then it’s a wonderful church and everyone is so supportive.”

Andrew has felt that support throughout the past 20 months, ever since he found out he was ill: “In April 2016, you’d have found a fit, active 56-year-old who went running four or five times a week and was still playing football.

“Then I had a few things that told me that my body wasn’t functioning quite right, but I felt re-assured by my GP and a consultant. However, they both recommended a colonoscopy. It was May 6, 2016. I couldn’t believe it when the doctor turned around and said: ‘We’ve found something and we think that it’s cancer’.

“I was a devastating moment. You think you know where you are in life and then you have this completely life-changing diagnosis.” Many of the songs and poems have come out of his experience and his feelings during this past 20 months: “At the centre of it is my faith in Jesus Christ, which has brought a great peace and joy despite everything going on in and around my life.”

He is also writing a book, The Tunnel, about his journey with cancer, and how his faith has sustained him during this experience.

Andrew was initially diagnosed with bowel cancer, which was successfully cleared by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

However, it had dispersed into the liver. Two courses of chemotherapy weren’t successful, and a third form of chemotherapy treatment was no longer available on the NHS: “I’d missed it by two months,” said Andrew.

“The treatment cost £13,000 and it was raised by 104 gifts from our friends. The support was unbelievable.”

The one-off treatment in June 2017 initially stopped the tumours from growing but in November, a scan showed that they had started to grow again.

“I could ask ‘why should this happen to me’? But I can’t take that approach and I never use the word ‘unlucky’. This happens to many people and I’ve met teenagers and young people in their 20s who are dealing with cancer.”

Talking openly about his cancer diagnosis and of what 2018 might bring, Andrew can’t help but have a little joke at his own expense: “My words are an expression of my faith, where I’m at, that people can connect with. And they’re downloading the songs because it’s a message they want to hear – but it wouldn’t happen with a sermon! In a three-and-a-half minute song, it’s different.”

Andrew has sent 15 to 20 of his songs to Luke – “the ones I feel warm about” – so we can expect some more singles to come. Andrew has set up Rising Hope as a not-for-profit foundation, and all the money raised will go towards funding young people in the South West in mission.

“Rising Hope was the title that came to me and I wanted to hold on to. It’s saying that hope is not finished. I’m working on some children’s nativity songs and a poem for marriage. I’m using my time, letting one thing lead to another.

“We should feel beyond rock bottom, destroyed. And yes, it is very difficult and painful for Katherine and myself and for our children. But we feel sustained and strengthened by our faith. We wouldn’t be where we are now without it, I’m 100% certain of that.”

‘Trump slump’ sees holidaymakers turning their backs on the USA

The USA has consistently remained one of the most popular holiday destinations for travellers from the UK even during times of recession and worldwide political unrest.

However, the past year has seen a marked decline in visitor numbers to most areas of the USA with only a few exceptions.

Although this cannot be entirely attributed to the ‘Trump Slump’ (with the exchange rate undoubtedly a contributory factor), figures do suggest that the downward trend began at roughly the same time that the new President took office.

Only the cities of Houston and Denver have witnessed an annual increase in visitor numbers with Philadelphia, San Francisco, Orlando, Las Vegas and Washington seeing the largest decline in people visiting for either business or leisure reasons.

Houston’s popularity actually surged with a 46% increase in the number of visitors. This level of popularity increase sounds surprising until you analyse the figures in detail and discover that the Houston area currently has the fastest growing economy in the USA and benefits greatly from it’s booming oil production and proximity to Mexico.

This would therefore lead us to assume that visits to this area are generally more business, rather than leisure, orientated.

The exchange rate (and more specifically the weakness of Sterling against the Dollar) has without question had a negative influence on visitor numbers to the popular tourist areas of Orlando, San Francisco and Las Vegas. This is particularly the case with Florida; a long-term popular family holiday destination, at a time when families in the UK are still feeling financially ‘squeezed’.

New York remains the most popular destination overall, despite suffering from a reduction in visitors along with many other cities.

Tourists appear to have been lost to other worldwide city break destinations such as Barcelona, Rome, Dubai and even Bangkok. Dubai remains popular but appears to have peaked in 2016, with overall visitor numbers to the Emirates seeing a significant reduction in 2017.

Australia appears to have been the main beneficiary of a slump in demand for people not wanting to visit the USA, with all of their key cities in 2017 seeing a rise in inbound tourism.

Tours and multi-centre holidays, in particular, witnessed the largest increase in popularity throughout 2017 and the England cricket tour at the tail end of the year resulted in many hotels and venues boasting record occupancies.

to be seeing a significant revival after several years of falling popularity due to political instability, with 2017 bookings 70% up on the previous year!

With good quality all inclusive products on offer at more competitive prices than Spain, Portugal and Greece, there are very positive signs that Turkish resorts are in for a bumper year.

Spain and its islands are still as popular as ever but with prices still increasing year on year, Greece is now showing itself as a more affordable alternative for many.

Visitor numbers to long haul destinations in the Caribbean and Central America were also hit due to a series of hurricanes and extreme storms last year but demand is now beginning to increase again.

Looking ahead to 2018, the island of Mauritius is proving to be a key player and an increasing popular choice for tourists looking to venture further afield in search of an exotic climate. Situated in the Indian Ocean and a direct 11-hour flight from London, luxury getaways are available to Mauritius at significantly more attractive prices than those to The Seychelles or The Maldives, which are considered to be the main rivals for a dream honeymoon or special anniversary break.

As travel agents, our main role has always been to help our clients find the perfect holiday to suit their requirements and budget. However, recent years have seen our tasks and service levels develop as an increasing number of aspects need to be considered when packaging a dream holiday.

Jodie Weeks and Ryan Smith, both 24, admitted they are in ‘shock’ after being crowned the winners of a £10,000 Win a Wedding competition.

Beauty therapist Jodie entered the online competition in Wedding Ideas magazine at the beginning of last year - and promptly forgot about it.

Then in September she received an e-mail confirming that they had won the top prize, sponsored by Squire Hotels.

“At first I thought it was a scam - and then found out it was true. Both myself and Ryan really are in absolute shock,” said Jodie.

“We cannot believe we have won our wedding! Recently, we have got ourselves on the property ladder with a new home at Hooe and we knew it would be an extremely long time until we had the chance to get married.

“Ryan works away from home as he is part of the military.

After finding out the news I can marry my best friend much sooner than expected, we feel it really is a blessing. We’re so proud and so grateful.”

The importance of sleep and the routines associated with it have been in the media once again in the last year.

Why it’s important and how to achieve it have been the focus of television programmes and newspaper articles. This included BBC’s ‘Sleepless Britain’ which is still available on iPlayer.

It looked at how, from our very youngest children to our teenagers, lack of sleep and the routine surrounding it is causing havoc for parents and teachers and therefore arguably the children themselves.

Then we have ‘Super Nanny’ and now ‘The Three Day Nanny’ (both Channel 4) meeting everyday families with problems relating to their children. Time and time again they have proved to have come down to a lack of boundary setting and unclear expectations.

At Roundabout Nursery we believe highly in the importance of routines, sleep in particular. We instill them while the children are in our care and recommend them to parents to put into practice at home. Healthy routines, as with boundaries, give children a sense of security and comfort and can benefit both the child and the wider family.

While a regimented routine can feel restrictive, austere and outdated, a well-considered, and thought-out approach to raising your child can be liberating and energizing, literally!

A child who is rested and re-charged will respond so much better during their waking time than one who is tired. You will see a marked improvement in behaviour, eating, concentration and their general well-being.

The NHS website gives a lot of information about how much sleep is recommended at each age. It even gives you a month by month suggestion for babies and toddlers, breaking it down into daytime and nighttime amounts. So, for example, a two year old should be having an hour and a half in the day and 11 and a half hours at night. A five year old should be having 11 hours at night and a 14 year old nine hours.

This means that if you want your five year old to be up at 7am to get ready for school they will need to be in bed (and asleep!) by 8pm every night. Your two year old by 7.30pm and your 14 year old by 10pm.

So how do we create a successful sleep routine? I chatted with our Toddler Room leader, Jacy, who looks after up to 20 two year olds at a time and manages to get them all to sleep at the same time and asked her some questions: • Why is it important for a two year old to have a day time nap?

activities. We also see a noticeable difference in the behaviour of children who sleep well.

Sleeping in the day also helps them settle better at night because they are more relaxed and not so desperate for sleep that they’ll just fall asleep anywhere, often at times you don’t want them to. If they don’t have a day time sleep they are likely to drop off at about 4pm which will have a significant effect on your evening routine.

• What routine do you follow in nursery?

This quieter part of the day starts at 11.30am with a hot meal and a drink. We change the children’s nappies and put on soft music, then all the children lay on mattresses with blankets and pillows. The adults sit amongst the children and we make sure any children who use comforters are given them. Perhaps a special blanket or toy, some use dummies. It is a very calm time of the day.

• Do you have many parents talk to you about their child’s sleep behaviours?

Less in the toddler room, and more in the baby room where parents are beginning to establish routines. Without a routine babies will get overtired and then just ‘crash’. They’ll often fall asleep whilst having their milk, and then neither feed or sleep satisfactorily. One thing we do talk to parents about is the importance of putting a child to sleep awake as part of a healthy sleep routine. Timing is really important too as we mentioned earlier, probably best to settle them no later than 1pm.

• How do you know when a child is ready to stop their day time nap?

A child will naturally start to shorten their sleep time and will take longer to get off to sleep in the first instance. You will probably just know.

In all of this we must remember that each child and family is different with different needs and will respond to different routines. We must also bear in mind that they will need different amounts of sleep depending on what activity they are doing. If they’ve just started nursery or school they will need more sleep because they will likely be very tired as they adjust to a new pace of the day.

Whatever you choose to do, be consistent. If you’ve instilled new routines with your own children or watched others doing it, you will know that it can be very hard initially. I would like to assure you that, as with any routine or expectation, the short term pain is worth the long term gain! The earlier you can teach good sleep habits the better. DESIGN MATTERS A new venture, which aims to help artistic talent in Devon, is being launched by a Plymouth creative company.

Gammaray Creative, who are based at Plymouth Science Park, will work with upand-coming designers, who may have hit hard times but who are all keen to build up their portfolio.

“We aim to run courses for people less fortunate than ourselves,” said Troy Woodhouse, director of Gammaray Creative. ‚“One area we plan to focus on is helping homeless people to tailor courses for an individual’s needs which can be very beneficial for them.

“It allows an opportunity for their talent to develop, their ideas and enthusiasm can also grow and, at the same time, they produce some fantastic work for a large number of firms.‚“ Gammaray Creative aims to start its workshops in February and its students will be actively involved in a number of ‘live’ jobs. The company is currently working with 50 different businesses by providing design work for a range of products – from stationery to bill boards.

Troy envisages the workshops will allow his team to develop strong brand strategies by thinking through concepts and developing them in a positive, solution focused fashion.

“The idea of the workshops is to listen to ideas and allow people to flourish. In the past, I’ve worked with youngsters in Cornwall who were struggling to get jobs but, by encouraging enthusiasm, we were able to ensure each

person had an input and felt valued.

“I am a firm believer in helping others. It’s doing something good and it’s about using my talents and strengths to better people’s lives.

“Basing the workshops at Plymouth Science Park ticks all the right boxes. The rooms are a perfect size and the on-site facilities are excellent.

“The surroundings are peaceful and allow for creative reflection – with plenty of woodland, a pond, bistro and ample parking.”

Troy has been a graphic designer for 20 years and ‘learnt from the best’ during his time with a regional company which catered for national and international clients.

“It’s really important to spend time with a client and to get to know them and their brand strategy so we can produce a quality design which encapsulates what they’re about and what they do,” he said. “We work on all aspects of design, from advertisements through to e-mail signatures.”

Troy is also involved in raising money for charities following the creation of ‘Unity through Basketball’ which, he hopes, will be broadened to encompass other sports.

The group has gained hundreds of followers on social media and aims to help a variety of charities – including ones which support people affected by brain tumours.

Cervical Cancer Screening – Why You Should Always Attend In the aftermath of the death of Jade Goody in 2009, the number of women who underwent screening for cervical cancer by way of smear tests increased significantly. However, the effect of this high profile case now seems to be wearing off with the latest figures suggesting the number of women undergoing this screening is in decline.

As with other forms of cancer, the stage at which cervical cancer is diagnosed has a significant impact on the treatment options available as well as the long term prognosis. The staging, given as a number from one to four, indicates how far the cancer has spread.

According to the NHS, the chances of living for at least five years after being diagnosed with cervical cancer are as follows: Stage 1 - 80-99% Stage 2 - 60-90% Stage 3 - 30-50% Stage 4 - 20% Regular screening, by way of a smear test, can in some cases identify biological changes that could turn cancerous before cancer develops. This allows for the removal of abnormal cells by way of a minimally invasive procedure and approximately 75% of cervical cancers can be prevented by cervical screening.

As the disease progresses the treatment options available become more extreme. If cancer develops

and is identified at a very early stage it may be possible to treat this with radiotherapy alone or with radiotherapy in combination with surgery that can allow for the woman to maintain her ability to have children.

However, when the disease progresses to a slightly more advanced stage a hysterectomy may be required which would involve the removal of the cervix, womb and possibly the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Chemotherapy is often given either in combination with radiotherapy in an attempt to cure cervical cancer, or as a sole treatment to slow the progression and relive symptoms of an advanced cancer.

Chemotherapy can have a number of side effects, including: • Nausea and vomiting; • Diarrhoea; • Mouth ulcers; • The constant feeling of tiredness and; • Hair loss.

After treatment of cervical cancer is complete the patient should undergo follow-up testing to look for signs of the cancer returning. These appointments are usually recommended every four months after treatment has been completed for the first two years and then every six to 12 months for a further three years.

If cervical cancer returns it may be necessary for a patient to undergo a pelvic exenteration, a radical

procedure during which the cancer is removed, plus the bladder, rectum, vagina and the lower section of the bowel.

Cervical cancer can lead to a number of complications, either resulting from the disease itself, or from the treatment carried out and in the most severe cases can result in death.

The earlier the diagnosis is made the more positive the outcome is likely to be and therefore it is highly recommended that women always attend smear tests when invited.

However, in spite of the screening process cancers can be missed and any delays or failures on the part of medical professionals to diagnose cancer can result in the progression of the disease to a more advanced stage. The consequences of this progression can be devastating.

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre So we are now one month into 2018 and I wonder how many of us are still on track with those New Year’s resolutions to stay fit and healthy?

We all start off with good intentions, but then life seems to get in the way and it gradually gets postponed until it is forgotten about.

Well, get those plans back on track by getting out in the garden and start growing your own fruit and veg. You’ll be ensuring that you are getting the freshest possible food available for you and your family, you’ll know where it’s come from, and you’ll know how it’s been grown, what feeds and fertilisers have been used to help it grow and what pesticides have been used to treat it.

It also tastes much better than supermarket bought fruit and vegetables, plus you can be more adventurous with the varieties you choose to grow. You can grow varieties that are either unavailable or expensive to buy in the supermarkets, such as purple carrots, pink blueberries and yellow raspberries.

There are a whole host of unusual and delicious food that you can easily grow at home that, you can’t get hold of easily in shops, and what’s more is that it’ll will only cost a fraction of the price to grow, than it would to buy from a supermarket already grown.

It is not just the health benefits of eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables that make growing your own so good for you, it’s the physical benefits too.

Being outside in the fresh air, moving around, weeding, digging, planting, harvesting, raking and mowing are all great forms of exercise, incorporating many different muscle groups from all over the body.

Without knowing it, gardening is a great all over body workout. Not only are you getting all your gardening jobs done, enjoying time outside in the sun and fresh air, but you are getting fitter, toning muscles and getting stronger at the same time.

Gardening for as little as one or two hours a day has also been shown to reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and strokes, and prevent other chronic diseases such as osteoporosis.

Doing as little as 30 minutes of physical work in the garden can burn a significant amount of calories and help with weight loss.

Research from the Royal Horticultural Society and the Horticultural Trade Association has revealed that gardening and growing your own fruit and vegetables is not only fantastic for your physical health, but it has been shown to be beneficial for your mental and emotional health.

The Horticultural Trade Association reports: ‘research has shown that 20 minutes spent in green settings such as park and gardens reduces the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), compared to time spent in concrete recreation areas. Even views of greenery through a window can have a positive impact on the symptoms.’

Gardening also helps bring people together, whether it be through sharing your home grown produces with friends, family or neighbours, or having barbecues and garden parties when the weather is nice, but also through tips and tricks passed from gardener to gardener on what has worked for them and what hasn’t.

There’s no reason not to start getting ready now: there are a few jobs that could be done now on existing fruit and vegetable patches to get them ready for spring. If you don’t have an existing fruit or vegetable patch, then this time of year is the best time to start.

Plant some rhubarb plants or crowns in fertile ground, mulch with well-rotted manure and force rhubarb plants for an early crop. Forcing is simply a method of covering the

rhubarb crown with a rhubarb forcer. This keeps the rhubarb in darkness, which causes the rhubarb to produce new, succulent stems earlier than normal.

Perennial vegetables such as asparagus and artichokes will need mulching with well-rotted manure or garden compost, to give them a boost for spring. Whilst mulching those, start to prepare the beds for growing potatoes in. Fertilise well by digging in plenty of well-rotted manure, compost and fish, blood and bone for the best growing conditions.

Start chitting your early potatoes. Stand them on end in a module tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place, such as a window sill. Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks, onions and celeriac under cover now.

Whilst they are germinating, prepare your vegetable seed beds by removing all weeds and forking in plenty of compost or manure. Cover prepared soil with sheets of black plastic to keep it drier and warmer in preparation for spring planting.

Prune your autumn fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to help produce new canes that will produce fruit in the future. Trim the tips of summer fruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports to just above a bud. There is still time to plant raspberry plants for this coming summer and autumn. canes, look for healthy plump buds and scrape some bark away with your finger nail, if it is green underneath, they are still alive and healthy, if it is brown, avoid them.

Prune apple trees and pear trees whilst they’re still dormant. Trim about a third of the overall growth off, cut out any dead, diseased or over lapping branches and prune any long wispy growth to just about a fat, stout bud.

Leave plum trees, cherry trees and apricots until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to Silver Leaf disease.

Trim your blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework, clear the centre of the bushes so that the basic shape of the bush is goblet shaped.

This allows plenty of air flow through the bushes, reducing the chances of disease and allows plenty of light to help ripen fruit. Currant bushes can also still be planted between now and the spring.

Check the weather for frost and protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines. If it is cold and no pollinating insects are present, then you may need to hand pollinate with a paintbrush to get a crop. These stone fruit trees can also be planted now. www.cornerstonevision.com
