Volunteers encouraged to get involved

Plans to ‘Tidy Up Torpoint’

Torpoint residents are being encouraged to come up with ideas for a programme of improvements for the town.

Torpoint Town Council will have a stand at the Carnival on September 24 in Cambridge Field where they will be asking for volunteers and ideas for the ‘Tidy Up Torpoint’ initiative.

The latest plan is part of the community-led Vision for Torpoint which includes ambitious proposals to create a range of attractive features in the town.

The Vision for Torpoint - which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund – has been spearheaded by members of the Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group and developed by consultants Clifton Emery Design.

The Vision is intended to be the blueprint for the future of Torpoint and was adopted by the Town Council earlier this year and officially presented to the town at the annual parish meeting in May.

Local residents heard a presentation on the Vision

by Neil Emery of Clifton Emery Design and they were given an opportunity to comment and ask questions.

Members of the Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group were presented with copies of the plan and the Town Mayor Councillor John Crago thanked them for their hard work and dedication over the last twelve months. Hundreds of individual consultation responses have been received from town residents, land owners and businesses.

The Mayor had great pleasure in handing a copy of the Vision for Torpoint to Mrs Rosemary Pellew from the Torpoint Archives.

• continued from front page www.facebook.com/TorpointNeighbourhoodPlan Members of the Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group have undertaken training made available to them through Cornwall Council and are currently working on writing the Plan Policies which will be presented to the people of Torpoint for their approval through a referendum.

A range of improvements and enhancements in the town are embodied in the Vision and have been developed out of key local and strategic considerations as well as an understanding of important issues for local people.

It has been informed and shaped by extensive consultation with local people. Over 1,500 people have responded to a web-based

questionnaire, a summer carnival event, town roadshow and public exhibition and presentation at the Town Hall.

The vision will provide a strategy for the wider town alongside project ideas for the town centre. Amongst other objectives a key aim is to improve the image of Torpoint by improving Fore Street, the bottom end of town and the waterfront – this includes establishing better connections between them.

Current plans include enhancements to Harvey Street and Elliott Square, the creation of a Market Square in an area bounded

by Tamar Street and Hooper Street and major waterfront improvements, with a Visitor Centre and boardwalk.

It is anticipated that the final proposals will be subject to a referendum of local residents in 2017 and fully adopted if more than 50 per cent of those who vote are in favour of the plans.

Big day for Rame Male Voice Choir

The Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir enjoyed what they believe is the biggest outdoor audience in their history when they performed on The Green, Kingsand, to mark their fortieth anniversary in August.

An estimated 300 people gathered outside The Rising Sun, the pub whose then landlord triggered the choir’s formation with a casual remark in 1976: “Why not form a village choir!”

Among earliest members was local restaurateur Bill Shimmell who brought along his chorister son, William. Young Bill has gone on to perform from Covent Garden to La Scala and Moscow’s Bolshoi - indeed, in all of the world’s leading opera houses, as an acclaimed baritone “I guess this was the first choir I performed with,” he said when he did the choir the honour of singing Ol’ Man River, as a tribute to the late Brian Pope, a former member.

This was the highlight performance of a programme that also included Bohemian Rhapsody, with local electric guitarist Alik Stephens helping further break the mould of traditional Cornish male voice singing.

Conducted by former musical director Jonathan Delbridge, with accompanist Liz Sidebotham, the programme included Nessun Dorma (Turandot) and Speed Your Journey (Nabucco), songs from film and shows, like My Heart Will Go On, You Raise Me Up, and Bring Him Home, plus a ‘60s medley and When the Saints Go Marching In. Two numbers composed for the choir were warmly received: Minnadhu Breaks and Pride of Cawsand.

Minnadhu Breaks was written by local man Pete Staniforth, and expresses the sentiments of a Rame exile. Pride of Cawsand was written by a choir member and set to music by Delbridge. It included a haunting piccolo solo by deputy musical director Brian Oates and marks the 125th anniversary this year of a catastrophic storm which sank more than 250 Board of

Trade registered ships around the south west.

No record of inshore fishing boats was kept then, but nine hook liners from the Cawsand fishing fleet of 40 never returned.

Both songs are touching emotional tributes to the village.

The Rame choir are this year’s winners of the President’s Plate, presented by the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs for their contribution to encouragement of singing in the Cornish community.

Weddings and funerals apart, most performances, and those of their folk and sea shanty offshoot, The Halfway Harmony, are for charity. They have helped raise more than £8000 for good causes in the year to April 2016, and in excess of £250,000 overall in their 40 years.

Typical beneficiaries include Cornwall Air Ambulance, Shelterbox, and RNLI. They have performed for charity in the Royal Albert Hall and Plymouth Pavilions with the massed choirs of Cornwall as well as in Germany, France, Spain and Ireland, and across the UK where concerts included singing with the Russian Army and The Royal Marines.

Laurie chose to swim 30 miles and to try to raise £30,000 because it was 30 years since he had swum the Channel. Among the others taking part were his wife Ethel, children Sarah, Matthew and Philip, and their spouses Bobby Chloe and Rosalie.

The Brokenshire clan after the swim He may have been diagnosed with terminal cancer – but that didn’t stop former commanding officer of HMS Raleigh Laurie Brokenshire from putting others first.

The retired naval commodore and his family swam 30 miles in relay in the sea from Fowey to his hometown Plymouth. Laurie completed the challenge despite being diagnosed recently with rapid brain cancer.

He and his family have already raised more than £35,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, Christian Vision for Men and Care for the Family. Laurie completed the challenge last month despite just completing a six-week course of radio and chemotherapy.

Laurie, 63, was recently featured in the press because he and his wife Ethel had fostered 66 children over the years – the number has since increased to 68. He is also a member of the Magic Circle, he headed up the UK Sea Cadet Corps and owns the biggest collection of puzzles in the world.

The swim started in the dark, at 5.20am and they arrived in Plymouth Hoe just after 6pm.

Family members accompanied Laurie in canoes, and some of his children and grandchildren also swam in open seas, three or four miles off the coast.

“It was tiring, but hugely fulfilling for all the family, and we feel privileged to have the strength to have done it,” said Laurie. “We arrived at Tinside Lido on Plymouth Hoe to hundreds of friends and family cheering and partying.

College students and staff celebrate their A level successes

Staff and students at Torpoint Community College are celebrating some superb A Level achievements with a higher than normal number of students applying for university.

Nearly 70 per cent of the year group applied for university with many achieving their first choice places. Close to a fifth of those who applied for university will be attending prestigious Russell Group Universities in September.

Early indications suggest the college is doing better than last year overall and is likely to be in line or better than national averages with many individuals doing exceptionally well.

Apprenticeships were popular this year with a significant number of students hedging their bets and applying for both university and an apprenticeship.

Nearly all of those who applied for university have achieved their preferred choice. Staff are proud that all of their students are either going on in education or taking up employment. Well done to them all.

One student in particular who has done exceptionally well is Lucy Haggerty who achieved all A*s in her Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Extended Project. She will be following in her sister’s footsteps and going to Imperial College where she will be pursuing medicinal chemistry. Congratulations Lucy an amazing achievement.

Other students who did exceptionally well were Bethen Hughes who attained AAB and an A in her Extended Project. She is off to study literature at Reading University.

Stefan Marks joined the Sixth Form from a Plymouth Grammar school and has done very well and will be following his dream to study agricultural science.

Pamela Castle has wanted to be a vet since she was a very young girl and will now be pursuing veterinary science at the Royal Veterinary College in September. Congratulations Pam – very well deserved.

She will be joined by the college’s previous head girl, India Crawford who has also successfully made it to the RVC this year after making the difficult decision to repeat Year 13 instead of taking a different course.

She persevered and will also now achieve her lifelong ambition of becoming a vet.

Many students reached or exceeded their targets and should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved, especially those who worked so hard to improve grades from their AS outcomes.

Once again two students were offered unconditional places at University this year, Katie Hall and Meg Stewart.

These students so impressed admissions tutors that they were offered a guaranteed place prior to their results. An excellent and incredibly rare achievement.

Katie will be pursuing psychology in Swansea and Meg actually turned down her unconditional, instead going for a much higher tariff offer and she will be pursuing business management at Queen Mary’s in London.

Huge congratulations to Connor Andrews who has done exceptionally well in his sport, psychology and biology A Levels alongside a gruelling swimming schedule. The college expect to hear great things from him in the future. He will be studying sport science alongside the best of the best in Bath.

Congratulations to Heather Warburton who has exceeded all her targets to achieve her dream of studying forensic science. Head Boy David Jory is off to Huddersfield to study transport management, something he has always wanted.

It also needs to be mentioned that the Year 12 students also did very well, in particular Cody Robinson, Alex Watkins and Will Allen. Will was selected from thousands and took part in a US Summer School this year and is hoping to follow in his brother’s footsteps and win a scholarship to study in the US. Matt Allen is currently at Princeton and Will is well on track to join his brother. Congratulations to all of Year 12 as well.

Overall the College is delighted. Head of Sixth Form, Becky Lear said, “Once again I feel exceptionally proud to be part of such an amazing Sixth Form with such wonderful students and staff.

“We are a small institution, and yet these students are ready and willing to take their places on the world stage and they are confident to stand head and shoulders with the best.

“Best of luck to the next generation of lawyers, scientists, politicians, physiotherapists, nurses and so much more.

The college and staff would like to thank each student for working so hard and the Leadership Team would like to thank each member of staff for going the extra mile to support our fantastic students.”

People always come first at Torcare Samantha launches new foot health care service in Torpoint A new foot health care service has been launched for people living in Torpoint and the surrounding area.

Samantha Freeman qualified in 1997 before she moved to Mallorca to start the very first British Chiropody Clinic, here she practiced for five years before moving with her family to France where she has spent the last 15 years treating the English community.

When she was a child, Samantha came many times to Cornwall on holiday with her parents. She fell in love with the countryside, beautiful coastline and the magical hidden coves.

She always hoped that one day she would retire to Cornwall. However her dream has come true a little earlier than that! Her son being 16 years old and keen to study art and design Samantha saw her chance to move to the place she fell in love with when he won a place at Plymouth College of Art. So they have come to Cornwall and settled in Crafthole.

Now Samantha is setting up her mobile foot health clinic as she feels that there is a great need for foot care in the local communities for people who find it difficult to get to surgeries.

She will be able to treat feet in the comfort of the patient’s own home. She is also offering a surgerybased clinic and has joined physiotherapist Sarah Harris at Trot House in Torpoint to provide a foot clinic once a week.

Samantha is passionate about the welfare and care

of feet which are so often neglected in today’s busy lifestyle and loves it when her patients literally walk on air when they leave.

Talented young musicians from across the region have been in tune with the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth this week.

Over 30 young people signed up to take part in a four-day summer school held at HMS Raleigh. The summer school programme featured a series of workshops to allow the young people to experience a range of ensembles, from the iconic marching band to the symphonic wind band. It culminated with a joint concert performed for family and friends at the Roebuck Theatre within HMS Raleigh.

Tom Dawson, from Plymouth, was one of the youngest musicians taking part. The 11-year-old has been playing the trumpet for five years and was joined by his brothers, Will, aged 15, and Oscar, aged 12 for the programme.

Tom said: “My dad plays the trumpet and he inspired me to play. It’s been really fun and enjoyable this week. I’ve learnt how to play differently and made lots of friends. I want to play in a band and teach people how to play the trumpet.

I’m going to practise a bit more now and see what happens.”

Josie Whale, from Launceston, was chosen to play a solo during a piece of music on the French horn. The 17-year-old said: “I’ve been playing this instrument for just under two years. My sister, Holly,

is here too and she plays the trombone. I go to a music school and I do solos all the time with my symphony orchestra, so I’m used to it. I didn’t think I’d get nervous, but every time I’ve got up during practise my hearts beats a tiny bit faster.”

This was the second year the Band has organised a summer school for young people.

Lewis Waldron, aged 14, from Ivybridge was one of a number of people returning. He said: “It was good fun last year and I got a lot of good experiences from it. This is a re-cap of what we did then. I want to do music as a career, but I’m not sure how yet.

I’ve been playing the saxophone for four years. I also play the clarinet and piano.”

The young people weren’t asked to audition for the summer school, but needed to be able to play and read music.

Major Richard Long, Director of Music of the Plymouth Band said: “We wanted to encourage young musicians from around the local area to come and enjoy making music with a professional band.

“Secondly it’s important for us to demonstrate what we do on a daily basis as part of the Royal Navy because we are always looking for young talented, enthusiastic musicians, who might be interested in a career in the Royal Marines Band Service.

“Hopefully the young people have learnt an enormous amount during their week with us.

“We’ve been playing different styles of music with them, everything from Latin/Brazilian music through to military music on parade, so different styles, different techniques and plenty of variety.”

Cawsand Bay Sailing Club Annual Regatta

Cawsand Bay Sailing Club held a successful 2016 Regatta with some exciting racing over two days with 25 boats.

Local Junior Noah Rees achieved a resounding victory winning first place in both Junior and Fast Monohull, as well as Overall Champion in an RS Aero-7.

Andy Negus and Brian Luxford, in a Comet Trio finished second in the Fast Mono, with Anthony Smith taking third place in a Laser Std. In the Catamaran Richard Clarke and James Sparks finished first with Andrew Clarke and Ian Grey taking the runners up spot.

Diamond Wedding celebrations Brian and Joan’s big day A Torpoint couple have celebrated 60 years of marriage in style.

Brian and Joan Jones, who live in Roaselare Avenue, had an open day for friends and neighbours on August 4 and two days later enjoyed a barbecue with their family.

Torpoint Mayor Coun John Crago and his wife visited the couple on their special day, which coincided with the arrival of a congratulatory card from Her Majesty the Queen.

Joan, 79, grew up in Plymouth and met Brian, who is 82, at a dance in the city when he was doing National Service in the Army.

Brian returned to his home town in South Wales after leaving the Army, but the couple kept in touch and eventually became engaged.

They were married at St James Church in Torpoint in 1956, before setting up home in South Wales, where Brian worked for the railways.

Soon after, the couple moved back to Torpoint and have now lived in the town for nearly 60 years. On returning to Torpoint Brian worked for BT, before eventually retiring after more than 30 years’ service. Joan had various jobs in the area, including spells at HMS Raleigh, the Post Office and a local butchers.

Their first son Kevin was born two years later, followed by Gareth and Gaynor.

The couple have five grandchildren and one great grandchild and the whole family are now settled in Torpoint.

French choir heads for Torpoint The Torpoint Lady Singers are looking forward to welcoming the French Fisherman’s choir “Gwen-aod” which means White Sea, a reference to the beach at Benodet where the first members met regularly when formed in 2000.

The concert will be on Sunday September 11, at 3 p.m at St Jame’s Church, Torpoint.

The choir are sending 23 members, and some musicians and will be a mixed group. They will be singing sea songs mostly written by Breton songwriters and the choir perform at Maritime and Celtic festivals.

Their link with Benodet is strong. The tickets are £5 and can be bought at the Torpoint Barbers or at the Church Door.

John and Paddy Hough from St John celebrate with a 60th anniversary card from the Queen A couple from St John have celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary.

John David Hough married Paddy (Rita) Hough at St David’s Church in Exeter on August 11 1956. John’s father took the service.

After the service, families and friends gathered at the Queen’s Hotel in Exeter and after the reception the newly-wed couple travelled to Exeter Airport for a honeymoon in Jersey.

Paddy was born in Exeter and met Londoner John when he invited her to accompany him to a dance at St Luke’s College, where he was following an advanced teaching course.

When the course ended they settled in North London when John took up a teaching post in

Hackney and Paddy took an office job.

In 1961 their first son David was born and, soon after, the family moved to Torpoint.

Three years later their second son Martin arrived.

After having the children Paddy took up work again with the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service until 1964, while John taught at Torpoint School until 1985.

In 1994 the family moved into a bungalow in St John.

David and Martin now have families and both live in Torpoint.

Receiving a 60th celebration card from Her Majesty the Queen on their anniversary made it a very special occasion.

Couple take the plunge with new venture focused on family fun A Plymouth couple have launched a new business in the city aimed at helping families to have fun on the water.

Murray and Nicky Barton opened the Mudjimba Beach Trading Company in Faraday Mill in July, stocking an extensive range of kayaks, paddle boards, body boards, wetsuits and other kayak accessories.

The couple hit the headlines in 2007 when their 18-month-old son Archie contracted Meningitis B. The severe septicaemia which followed has ravaged Archie’s body and caused him to have both legs amputated.

In addition he has lost a number of fingers, part of an ear and the tip of his nose. His sight is also severely impaired.

Nicky and Murray spent several years raising funds for Archie’s treatment and also highlighting the dangers of Meningitis B. Time out and family fun has always been important for them and for years they toured the coastline of Cornwall in a camper van, giving Archie the opportunity to enjoy himself in the water.

Nicky said: “We thrive for Archie to have a life with no limits and we have had some amazing moments, one of which was Archie surfing backwards on Polzeath beach.”

Archie, who is now 10, has also surfed on the Great Barrier Reef and Bondi Beach in Australia - where the family have relatives.

“My sister lives near Mudjimba Beach in Queensland,” said Nicky, “which is where we got the inspiration for the company name.”

The family-run business takes pride in supporting British - and mainly South West - suppliers.

The company is official retailer for Somerset-based FatYak in Devon and Cornwall, stocking the popular Mahee double, Kaafu and Surf.

Nicky and Murray only took the decision to launch the business in May and quickly fitted out the unit at 52-53 Faraday Mill in Plymouth.

Murray, who served in the Royal Navy for eight years and has run his own construction company for nearly 30 years, said: “Some people may think we have been a little reckless in launching the business

It’s Gold, Gold, Gold!

The Rio Olympics have been amazing for Great Britain. The number of medals won exceeding all expectations. I am sure it will give the whole country a lift at a difficult time in world history.

Why have we been so successful? Lottery funding has made a big difference to athlete’s performance, providing better facilities, a higher standard of coaching and enabling them to focus on their chosen sport rather than trying to raise money.

Life so often is like a lottery, you never know what will happen next.

You can be ‘sailing along’ quite happily when suddenly some type of crisis hits and you wonder where it has come from.

If you are like me you may wonder why God allowed it to happen. Which leads to an even bigger question why doesn’t God stop all of the suffering and evil things that are happening in the world?

Relationships have broken down in many ways: • Our relationship with one another.

• Our relationship with the planet and nature.

• How we see ourselves – (what do you see when you look in the mirror).

• Our relationship with God. Maybe we need to ask another question – How can God help us to fix the problems we face?

Many of our athletes when being interviewed

have said: “Rio is the only thing they have been focusing on for the last four years”.

Their single mindedness has in many cases bought huge success and I have to admire their commitment to their chosen goal.

Jesus ‘set his face like flint towards Jerusalem’. In other words he was focused on completing the task that he and his Father had set for him. The task of restoring our relationship with God. You see selfishness and pride had destroyed our close contact with God and left us doing our own thing.

There is nothing wrong with independence but when to underline that independence we simply go into outright rebellion we run the risk of damaging everything and everyone around us.

Jesus’ mission was to restore not only our relationship with God but with one another and with the planet, not forgetting a peace with our own self.

You may say religion isn’t making a very good job of it. The key is, our relationship with God. If we allow him to lead us and let his love touch the core of our beings this love will start to affect everything around us.

Just like the athletes who in winning their medals bring great joy to many so we too can bring love, joy, peace and great relief to those who we come into contact with.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD IS ON THE MENU FOR TORPOINT WI TORPOINT WI

Rosemary Slee welcomed everyone to the August meeting.

The Summer Supper was held this year in July, instead of August, and the weather was kind to us.

Rosemary very kindly hosted the supper and she thanked the committee for providing the delicious food which everyone enjoyed very much.

Jean Morgan once again challenged us all with a great Treasure Hunt in the garden and Rosemary is still finding various items which wouldn’t normally be found there!

The raffle on the evening raised around £30 which we have donated to the First Responders.

Rosemary thanked everyone for their support at the Lions Fair last month, providing lots of delicious cakes and also for the help on the stall.

Rosemary then introduced our speaker for the evening, Mrs Lorna Grainger, who gave us a talk entitled ‘Food, Glorious Food’ in which she gave us the origins of many popular sayings connected to food, for example ‘chewing the fat’, ‘upper crust’ and many more.

Mrs Grainger gave us all a fascinating insight into sayings we probably use without realizing where they come from.

It was agreed that the Committee would decide on how we can contribute to Denman and members were invited to take part in the Denman Dip where they could win a weekend course at the WI College.

Several members are going to the Kernow Mill Fashion Show which is to be held on Wednesday October 19 and Rosemary asked for ideas for decorating the WI Christmas Tree for the St James Church Christmas Tree Festival.

The Autumn Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday September 28, and on Monday November 14 members have the chance to visit the Eden Project where the WI are to hold a day entitled ‘Inspiring Women’.

MAKER WITH RAME WI

The ladies of the WI were amazed this month to hear about the incredibly varied life which has been led by our speaker for the afternoon, Mike Bearcroft.

Having left school planning a career in professional football, he ended up doing just about everything but that. He began training as an accountant, but soon found this was not to his taste, and got a job as a sales rep, selling toiletries and cosmetics.

He enjoyed this life, and gradually moved from company to company, with many promotions along the way, and worked in several other parts of the world, including Canada.

On his return, he joined a ‘not for profit’ health insurance company, working with the Red Cross, and in fact became a director of the Red Cross.

At this point in his life, fancying a change of direction, he went to work for a while on a ranch in America as a cowboy. On his return he turned to acting - got his Equity card - and appeared in several popular TV shows.

He also produced murder mystery evenings and musical shows, writing his own scripts, plus a summer school based on the Broadway shows.

Sadly at this point he suffered a massive heart attack, and was forced to dispose of his various enterprises, but rather than be idle, he decided to become an author, and started writing fiction.

The money from most of these enterprises, including the book, have been donated to charity. He was thanked by Di Kennedy for a fascinating talk.

While the members enjoyed tea and cake after the talk, Sue Hale from Torpoint WI gave us an excellent and very detailed report on the recent AGM in Brighton, where she had represented all the groups on the Rame Peninsula.

Mosquito Sailing Club fund raiser for St Luke’s A two-day charity event at Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club is raising funds for St Luke’s Hospice in September.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event which takes place on Friday September 16 and Saturday 17.

The event starts on Friday evening at 7.30pm with indoor yacht racing sponsored by local businesses. With lots of chances to win this should be great fun for the whole family.

The fun continues on Saturday September 17 with a coffee morning starting at 10am along with arts and crafts stalls, face painting and a tombola.

In the afternoon there is an onthe-water fun race between yachts, dinghies, and windsurfers and the

evening sees live music from Shaun Fletcher (Fletch).

This year’s event is hosted by Jenny Roberts and Sue Griffiths.

Sue said: “The event is open to everyone so please spread the word and come along with your friends and family to help us beat our previous fantastic fund raising attempts to help all those who are fighting cancer or any other terminal illnesses.

“But if you cannot make it during the event and would like to help, we are seeking raffle and tombola prize donations. Any donations can be dropped off at the club during open hours and we will be very grateful for anything that will help our efforts”.

Submariner takes part in 12 challenges for charity A submariner based at HMS Raleigh has set himself the goal of undertaking 12 physical challenges in nine months to raise money for a charity.

Warrant Officer Damien Holloway will be running, trekking and cycling both individually and as part of a team to raise funds for the Paul McCann Fund for Needy Children.

Damien’s 12 challenges started in June when he took part in the Brecon Beacons Challenge, a twoday adventurous training exercise in the Brecon Beacons run by the Royal Navy. Damien was among a team from the Royal Navy Submarine School who took part in the race against the clock consisting of a 25 kilometre (km) mountain walk, 30 km mountain bike phase and a 500 metre kayak.

Just two days later he took part in the Torbay Half Marathon and then the Six Moor Miles off-road race at the beginning of July. Next was another team event, the Glyndŵr’s Way National Trail trek over 135 miles between Knighton and Welshpool through Powys.

Damien, aged 41, said: “I did ok in the Torbay Half Marathon. I finished in one hour 43, I wanted to do it a lot quicker, but the Brecon Beacons challenge took its toll on me and I slowed down a bit towards the end.

The Glyndŵr’s Way walk took eight days to complete. It was extremely hot and it turned into nearly 150 miles with the official diversions.”

Next up for Damien was the

Dartmoor Perambulation, a 50 mile trek in August, alongside Chief Petty Officer Ian Robertson, another shipmate, who also took part in the Glyndŵr’s Way. Damien said: “After that I’ve got a French cycling event, the Wiggle French Sportive, in September with a civilian friend of mine. It’s only a 100 kilometre ride. For the Equinox run, a 24 hour run at Belvoir castle in Leicestershire, we’ve got a team of five running that at the moment.

“You get to camp out at the weekend and we have some corporate sponsorship from Wheal Jane, a local mining company.

The Plymouth 10K in October, I’ve got to sign up for that one yet. Then there’s the Eden Project Half Marathon, which I’ve done before, followed by the Dartmoor Vale Half Marathon, leading to the big one, the Florence Marathon at the end of November and then the biggest one of all, the Falklands Marathon in March next year to finish off.”

The Paul McGann Fund for Needy Children was set up in memory of Paul McGann, a Royal Navy submariner.

Paul and another submariner, Anthony Huntrod, sadly lost their lives whilst serving on board HMS Tireless in 2007. Damien was Paul’s line manager on the submarine and the two men were also close friends.

Bowled over by Antony’s hospitality With the Olympics taking place we thought we had better show some sporting prowess, well not too energetic!

A skittles match was organised against Antony skittles team and we think we saw that they were a regular skittles team winning in style but several members of our team did show some skill, but then it’s not all about winning they say!

Antony team members and supporters laid on a great evening for us. It was held in the Antony Village Hall and a really lovely buffet supper was provided by them, also a draw helped to raise some funds for their club.

Thank you Antony team, we look forward to a return match, also a big thank you to supporting partners to make up our team.

At this month’s monthly meeting it was a real pleasure to welcome a new member, Mark Lishman, into the club. Mark attended a couple of meetings and also helped with events held by the club before he decided to become a Lion member.

The Lions Club district Governor Lion Fred Broom attended the meeting and wished Mark well. Mark’s wife Maria proved her support by joining us at the skittles match and helped us boost the score.

Both teams and supporters ending a very enjoyable evening Also it is encouraging that we had two more potential future members attending the meeting. The more members we have in the club the easier it is to raise money for local charities and maybe put on more events.

If you are interested in working for your local community by joining us and donating a few hours of your time you would be very welcome.

We meet only once a month to discuss future fund raising and social events.

If you cannot commit to joining the club maybe you could give us a contact number and lend a hand at some of our busy events (Santa Run etc). Help is always welcome.

From the Mayor’s Parlour...

To start this column off, I must say a huge thank you to each and every one who turned out and supported the Civic Parade and Service, after all these years it still puts a lump in my throat when you get to Clifford Motors and look back and see the procession is still marching out of Buller Road, with all the community watching from the pavements.

Since the last report in June, Tina and I attended the Benodét Park for a Taste of France Event, hosted by the Torpoint & District Twinning Association, thank you for a very enjoyable afternoon.

We also attended the Plymouth Armed Forces Day on the Hoe, an excellent day was had by all.

At the end of June I attended Carbeile Junior School for a meal at their French Restaurant set up in the classroom and we were waited on and served by the children, thank you to Harry for your kind invitation.

Other highlights in July included the Whistle for the Somme Remembrance (July 1) at St James Church; the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and presentation at Antony House; presentation of £100 to the Hawks Cub Pack, many thanks Frank and all the STC members; Sea Sunday Service at the Minster Church of St Andrew, Plymouth; Thank You afternoon at Torpoint Nursery and Infant School.

Tina and I opened the Torpoint & Rame Peninsula Lions Fair (July 16) at the Torpoint Community College grounds; thank you to the Lions President, Andy Brownhill for a wonderful afternoon. In the evening we attended the 200 Club to present the awards to the Students from the Coppola School of Performing Arts. Congratulations to all who received their awards and to Kelly for everything that she does with all of her young Students.

Residents have contacted Cllr Gary Davis passing on their compliments to the Cornwall Council road sweepers, I have spoken to them personally and I have congratulated them on your behalf, a big thank you from our community.

Tina and I attended lunch at Trevol House and the Passing out Parade at HMS Raleigh, (July 22) hosted by Captain Rob Bellfield.

Captain Rob Bellfield will be leaving HMS Raleigh at the end of this term and we wish him, his wife Zoe and family all the very best for the future and on Tuesday July 26 Councillors Mike Pearn, Rachael Tanner, John Tivnan and I had a farewell drink with him at the Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club and the Torpoint & District Unionist Club (Conservative Club).

We attended the Torpoint Mini Soccer Club presentation evening (July 23) at the Council Chambers and presented the young players with their awards and trophies.

Well done to them all including the coaches, parents, supporters and all involved in the running of the club.

Tina and I attended the Diamond Wedding celebrations of Brian and Joan Jones on August 4 and presented them with a basket of flowers to mark the occasion, they had also received a card from Her Majesty the Queen. It was pleasant chatting to them and reminiscing about the old days in Torpoint. The same evening I attended the Band Concert at HMS Raleigh with my grandchildren and Daughter in Law, a very enjoyable evening.

The Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Lambert Keise attended the Diamond Wedding celebration for John and Paddy Hough, John was a well-known sports teacher at Torpoint Community College for many years and his good lady wife taught disadvantaged children.

The new bus shelters have been erected at Trevol Road (opposite the Spar shop) and Sycamore Drive. The Council noticed a shortage of bus shelters west bound especially to service the new Penntorr Health

Centre, so the Town Council has now gone some way to correcting this situation.

My chosen charity will be to raise funds for the purchase of a Public Access Defibrillator from Fleet, a reminder that the Council has also purchased a defibrillator which is sited at Clifford Motors (Esso filling station).

I would like to congratulate all the staff, governors, children and parents at Carbeile Junior School following their recent Ofsted inspection, where in less than two years the School has improved from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’.

An update from Torpoint Town Council The Town Council are also acutely aware of the financial situation affecting Cornwall Council and are exploring opportunities to ensure assets and service delivery is maintained and in some cases enhanced in the town.

For example the Town Council are in discussions to take over the running of the Library in Lower Fore Street. With library budgets being cut, the Town Council are pressing ahead with negotiations to

ensure this service is retained in the town.

Additionally and as a key part of the site, the package will also include the Tamar Street car park adjacent to the Library.

The Town Council currently operates and maintains Benodét Park (within Thanckes Park) together with the Skateboard Park, all in Thanckes Park, also Rendel Park (adjacent to the ferry) also we have taken on the cleaning and maintence of the toilets at Thanckes Park and Antony Road. To add to the portfolio of properties, the Town Council are now in negotiations to take over the running of the tennis courts in Thanckes Park along with the management and eradication of the Japanese Knotweed.

The Town Council are concerned that the tennis court area has been neglected for some time and are determined to bring this area back into use for the general public.

On the subject of Benodét Park and the Skateboard Park, it is worth noting that since the introduction of CCTV cameras in this area, the level of vandalism and hooliganism has dropped substantially.

The Council has adopted a zero tolerance to anti-social and criminal behaviour and footage is made available to the Law Enforcement Agencies to pursue.

The Town Council has appointed a trained Enforcement Officer who has the ability to issue fixed penalty notices for dog fouling and fly tipping.

If you are aware of hot spots in the town, please contact the Town Council Office or a Council Member and we will endeavour to send the officer to this area.

Finally just a reminder that the Council is driving forward the Neighbourhood Development Plan and Vision for Torpoint, this will be on show at the Carnival on Saturday September 24.

The plan and Vision will identify projects that will shape and structure the future of the Town. In a similar vein the Coastal Community Team Economic policy for Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula will also look to deliver regeneration and social projects for this area of Cornwall in conjunction with Cornwall Council, Plymouth City Council and other key partners.
