Crowds turn out in force in Cawsand to celebrate

New start at the Old Ship Inn The near-derelict Old Ship Inn, Cawsand, is open for business – just six days after changing hands.

The pub, one of the oldest buildings in Cawsand village, was destroyed by fire in 2013 and left as an empty shell until bought this month by a new community organisation. The group’s ambitious plans include recreating the pub on the ground floor, together with a café and a heritage centre, and then building four flats on the upper floors for low-cost rental to local people. The overall plan could take up to three years to complete, but the group, The Old Ship Inn Cawsand Limited, is confident of success.

The Grand Opening – no room at the inn On the same day as completing the legal moves needed to take on the freehold, the Old Ship group decided to push straight on and arrange a ‘Grand Opening’ at very short notice, to get the ball rolling and keep up the interest from the community.

The event proved to be more successful than anyone expected. Jane Riggs, who organised the event, said: “We had hoped we might get as many as 50 people turning out, given the really short notice.

The Old Ship project was created in the first place by The Peninsula Trust, the Millbrookbased group that run the Rame Centre in that village. The Trust raised the purchase cost through private investment from 320 individuals, both locals and visitors, and from finance support from the Plunkett Foundation and Co-op & Community Finance.

Some have expressed concern about the challenges ahead on this complicated project, currently estimated at £1.2 million total cost, but Trust manager Simon Ryan is confident: “We have had strong interest not just from local people - the crucial base for everything we do – but also from Cornwall Council, heritage groups, housing specialists and national charities.

“The idea of mixing low-cost housing with community space is a genuinely exciting way to help strengthen our community, so grant funders and finance providers are very willing to listen and consider us. We believe that the Old Ship can be a new start for the village and a great way forward.”

Busy, not bored… The six week summer holiday seems amazing on the last day of school: no getting up for school, no homework and plentiful fun with friends.

However, sometimes the reality is that some fun costs money and your friends aren’t free and you find yourself at a loose end as to what to do.

However, if you are between four and 12 years old you can take part in the national Summer Reading Challenge, which is how many children have avoided boredom.

This is a fun and free activity which has had a different theme for every one of the 19 years that it has been running. The aim is to read six books over the summer holidays and along the way you receive sticker sets to fill in your free booklet in order to solve a mystery. In addition to the stickers, you receive a prize, such as a bookmark, for every two books that you read.

Once you have read all six books, you receive a wristband, a medal and a certificate. You can choose any books you like from the library, but must be able to talk to a volunteer about them, to show that you have read them fully.

The reading challenge gives children the motivation to fill any free time throughout the school holidays with reading. There is also a ‘mini-challenge’ for children under four which is less complicated and just involves collecting six stickers in a booklet.

If you are 13 or over there is another way to get involved with the reading challenge: becoming a Reading Challenge Volunteer.

This involves sorting out the materials, signing people up, and handing out prizes.

As a volunteer, you improve your people

However, over the ten two hour sessions that I volunteered for at Torpoint Library, my favourite part was talking to the children about the books, although I also loved handing over their medals because seeing the look of pride on their faces was very rewarding.

For me, as a 13-year-old volunteer, this experience has given me an idea about being in a workplace and it’s been a more productive use of my spare time than sitting around at home.

In Torpoint alone multitudes of children have signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge 2018 and there have also been several volunteers supporting the library staff to run the challenge. Why don’t you get involved with the Summer Reading Challenge 2019 and be busy, not bored?

Millbrook’s Vix Hill-Ryder of The Family Foraging Kitchen has announced details of events in September.

The first is ‘Exploring Edible Seaweeds’ on September 9 between 11.30am and 2.30pm at Freathy Beach, Whitsand Bay. The wild food rockpool walk and cookery class costs £20 per person with all children free. Advance booking essential.

Vix is organising a Willow Basket Course on September 15 at the Horsepool Apiary on the Antony Estate from 10.30am to 3pm. Cost is £55 for the full day and tickets are limited. Advance bookings only.

Sailing club’s cheque for Rame Responders Rame Responders have been presented with a bumper cheque by Cawsand Sailing Club.

The sailing club raised over £2,000 from their summer dance and grand draw and the cheque was presented to Chris Gaulton, group co-ordinator for Rame Responders, by Ian Turpitt, Commodore of Cawsand Sailing Club.

Ian is a former Rame Responder and became aware that they were in need of funds, so he had the idea of the club holding a fundraising dance in The Maker With Rame Community Hall.

A committee was appointed of sailing club members, who decided to extend the event to include a grand draw. They approached many local businesses who willingly donated prizes. Brittany Ferries donated a £200 voucher which was auctioned at the dance which was a sell-out.

Torpoint’s Stuart Eddy is honoured

by RNLI for volunteer work and fund raising

Preparations are underway to remember the 61 World War One servicemen listed on Millbrook’s memorials or buried in Commonwealth War Graves in the churchyard.

These servicemen and those they left behind will be specially remembered in November as part of Millbrook’s annual Remembrance Ceremony.

All the men have been researched and in many cases their last address in Millbrook is now known. Between November 1 and 12 posters remembering each of the soldiers and sailors will be on display outside these houses to form a commemorative walk and will serve as a stark reminder of the scale of loss to the community at that time.

In addition to the local men from Millbrook we will also remember those from further afield who died in service and were buried in the Parish. This includes soldiers from the West Indies Regiment and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

A Torpoint man has been honoured for his volunteer work and fundraising for the RNLI. Retired shipwright Stuart Eddy, who is 70, was presented with a certificate of excellence by Plymouth lifeboat coxswain David Milford on the all weather Sybil Mullen Grover at a special ceremony in Sutton Harbour.

Stuart, who retired five years ago, was given a tour of the lifeboat and thanked for all his efforts on behalf of the RNLI. Stuart has also raised money for Whitsand Bay lifeguards, mainly by crafting items made from driftwood collected in Whitsand Bay. Stuart said: “I source the driftwood during the winter when we get good stormy weather. I display items for sale in the Cross Keys pub, thanks to Geoff and Isobel and the staff there.

“I’m also grateful to Jewsons Builders Merchants and their manager Julie, who provide me with DIY materials for my driftwood creations.”

Stuart started his career as a shipwright apprentice in the Dockyard and finished up working as a self-employed carpenter.

“I’ve always loved working with wood,” he said.

Millbrook prepares to remember First World War servicemen

All set for popular Torpoint Carnival Local groups and organisations are busy preparing for Torpoint Carnival in September.

The event takes place on Saturday September 15 in Cambridge Field, St James Road there will be something for all the family to enjoy.

Stalls and displays will be up and running from 12 noon, with judging of the walking entries taking place at 3pm followed at 3.30pm with the judging of the decorated floats.

There are prizes for winners, as well as second and third place in each tableaux class. Classes include vehicle tableaux or cars and trailers, walking groups, children’s and adults fancy dress as well as decorated prams or pedal cycles.

Carew Arms welcomes new team at the top The Carew Arms at Antony has a new team at the top.

They are m anager Millie Belcher, previously landlady at The Seagrave Arms and her partner and head chef, Iain Hobbs, who upheld their Two Rosette reputation in the Cotswolds.

The Carew Arms has already built a strong reputation for great food in relaxed surroundings, and is now going to offer more community events, such as barbecues, quiz nights and events to raise money for deserving local causes.

“We’re keen for the pub to be the focus of the village and local area,” said Millie. “We want locals to feel welcome to drink and relax with friends - and think of it as their pub.”

The pub’s new farm shop and café, which stocks locally-sourced food and drink, as well as serving breakfast from 8.30am, will look to stock products from the Rame Peninsula itself.

“These items won’t be ones you’ll find in Waitrose.

We’re looking to have met the suppliers personally - a lovely jam produced by one person using strawberries they grew in their garden in Antony, is the kind of unique and authentically local produce we’re aiming to offer customers.”

The pub will also offer a range of seasonal dishes using home-grown ingredients, some of which including lamb, potatoes and onions – are reared and farmed on the nearby Antony Estate.

The Carew Arms, previously known as The Ring O’Bells, underwent extensive renovation two years ago under the new ownership of Tremayne CarewPole.

Tremayne said: “We’re really pleased that Millie and Iain have joined us with a great vision for putting The Carew Arms at the heart of village life. Voyage of the Mayflower talk for Old Cornwall Society Torpoint’s Old Cornwall Society start their new season of meetings on Wednesday September 19 at the Torpoint Council Chambers, starting at 7.30pm.

Guest speaker is Mr M Heywood whose subject is the Voyage of the Mayflower. New members always welcome, £1 per meeting.

People always come first at Torcare...

It was the most perfect sunny day in July for Torcare’s Summer Fete, the scene was set outside in the Nursing Centre’s pretty garden with bunting, tables, chairs and parasols as well as stalls including tombola, raffle and cakes.

The residents, their families and friends enjoyed cool drinks while watching the Punch and Judy show where the actors brought the popular characters to life.

The buffet lunch was very tempting and tasty with strawberries and cream for pudding.

During the afternoon Wendy J. Bassett, a vibrant female vocalist performed memorable songs from the 1950s and 60s which was a lovely backdrop for the presentation of long service awards to Nicky Stansfield, 30 years and Christine Terry, 37 years.

Everyone joined in singing, clapping and toe tapping along to the beat. A great day had by all.

We now look forward to the Summer Fayre on Wednesday September 12 at Porte Rouge – all are welcome.

Kingsand and Cawsand to remember the fallen of the First World War It seems almost impossible to get one’s head around the carnage of World War I. The countless white crosses, row upon endless row, in just a single Flanders cemetery, provide only the vaguest hint. How can one grasp the reality of 10 million dead on both sides.

The reality? The Department of Transport lists 246,000 miles of road, including all minor ones, in Britain. If you do the arithmetic, 10 million equates to 40 dead bodies for every single mile - with some 16,000 left over. That’s the entire populaton of Saltash.

The other military casualties: the wounded, blind, maimed, crippled, gassed, and insane, from an era which knew nothing of post traumatic stress disorder, is widely quoted at some 23 million. That’s getting on for three times the current population of Greater London.

The villages of Kingsand and Cawsand are intent on marking the centenary of the armistice which ended that carnage - or 111111 18, as they have styled it. Maker Church is planning an evening production on Saturday, November 10, at 7pm.

Kingsand resident Mike Baskott has been approached by Father Michael Brown, to produce and direct a varied programme which will include music, song, narrative, poetry, theatre, bell ringers, and three choirs.

“There will be humour, pathos, and a number of special effects,” said Mr Baskott. “We will attempt to recreate the atmosphere of the trenches, and take the audience from the pre-war peacetime idyll, through the horror of the conflict, and into the war’s aftermath.”

The three choirs will be the Women’s Institute, under the musical directorship of Anne Pleasance, Maker with Rame team ministry choir under Steve Lacey, and the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir who on August 24 received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - first men’s choir in Britain so honoured. They will be led by Jonathan Lewsey, the former Sterts ceo.

The musical programme is being organised by Kingsand’s Philip Willoughby.

John Evans, Maker churchwarden, has collated multiple sources to reveal the background of the Rame fallen. There are 19 names on Maker’s war memorial and 18 on its Cawsand counterpart.

Eight local men died at the Battle of Jutland on May 31 1916, and six on a single ship, HMS Monmouth, which went down with all 735 crew at Coronel, off the coast of Chile, on November 1, 1914.

Chief shipwright Harry Marden was 40, and left a wife, Bessie Eliza, in West Street, Millbrook. The remaining 13 dead from these two actions were all from Kingsand and Cawsand.

The youngest was Ernest Jago a “Boy, 1st Class” in the service jargon of the day. The lad from Market Street, Kingsand, was just 17 not even old enough to vote when he died for his country.

He served on HMS Monmouth. The armoured cruiser was impotently out of range when she was crippled by the superior calibre guns of the Gneisenau.

Monmouth, refusing to strike her colours, was shelled to oblivion, and capsized in heavy seas.

There were no survivors.

Britain sent a retaliatory force in pursuit; they engaged the enemy off the Falklands, and five weeks after the loss of the Monmouth, the whole of the German squadron was destroyed with the loss of 2200 lives.

Three descendents of the Monmouth crew have been interviewed and their fascinating and emotional stories will be among those recounted at Maker on November 10.

Waste recycling boost for residents Polystyrene manufacturing plant DS Smith Plastics, which is based near Torpoint, is now offering a novel service to local residents – the chance to recycle their waste polystyrene.

The company, based on the B3247 road a mile outside Millbrook on the road to Crafthole, has set up a dedicated recycling bin in its car park, which will be open from 8.30am to 5pm on weekdays.

DS Smith regional operations manager John Johnstone said: “The kind of polystyrene we can accept has to be clean, and would be the kind of packaging you get when you buy a new television or computer, for example. We’d ask people to please call into our reception to double check before dropping their unwanted polystyrene off in the bin as some types unfortunately cannot be recycled, such as loose packing chips”.

Claire Wallerstein, from local beach cleaning group Rame Peninsula Beach Care, who attended the opening of the facility, said: “While polystyrene is technically recyclable, people in Cornwall do not have the opportunity in practice to recycle it either at kerbside or at household waste sites.

“Unfortunately this flyaway material is one of the most common items of waste found on our local beaches, and once in the environment is almost impossible to remove as it so readily breaks down into its constituent beads.

“It is great that DS Smith are giving people the opportunity to recycle this material, which will hopefully mean less of it ending up where it doesn’t belong, in the natural environment”.

DS Smith is a signatory to the British Plastics Federation’s voluntary Operation Clean Sweep scheme, which encourages plastics producers to adopt a range of measures to prevent losses of pre-and post-production industrial plastic materials into the environment. The company has introduced a range of measures over recent years to help limit losses of its lightweight product, for example putting up mosquito netting over open windows and having a dedicated staff member to regularly check the site for losses and spills.

Young sailors receive their certificates Several youngsters have successfully completed a sailing course of instruction by members of Cawsand Bay Sailing Club.

The youngsters from the Kingsand and Cawsand area were presented with their Royal Yachting Association Certificates at a celebratory barbecue on the beach.

They had taken part in several weeks instruction and it is hoped that many from this group will progress their skills by participating in the club’s Sunday morning and Thursday evening races in Cawsand Bay. The Cadets are able to use the club’s sailing dinghies to further their skills - without the cost of buying their own boat. During a race, as well as the usual safety boats, members keep a close eye on the Cadets and give encouragement and guidance.

Talented twins are top athletic stars

Talented identical twin sisters daughters Rosie and Poppy Northcott from Millbrook have had an outstanding year so far in their athletics!

Both girls have a great passion for their love of athletics and train regularly at Brickfields for the City of Plymouth Athletic Club.

Rosie enjoys her sprints and jumps and has done well in lots of competitions. She is ranked quite high up on the Power of 10 and is always in competition with her sister!

She recently set a new personal best in her long jump of 4m 16cm with Poppy just one centimetre behind. She has also set a new personal best in her high jump achieiving an amazing 1m 25cm.

Poppy loves her sprinting too, but her talent lies in the middle distance track running. Just recently she set a new club record in the 800m finishing in 2m24.96 which was last beaten in 1987.

This time has now ranked her number one in the UK for her age group in the Under 13 girls category ( as is a yr 1 in this category being 11 yrs old)!

Both girls have just represented Cornwall in the Intercounty Competition held at Exeter Their parents are both so proud of their daughters’ success and for the support they give each other.

Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions are very sad to report the loss of Lion Jim Parsonage who passed away at the end of July. Members of the club attended his funeral at Maker Church on Tuesday August 21.

Lion Jim was one of the founding members of the club in 1977 and remained a keen and active supporter of the club, regularly attending meetings up to a few months before his death. It was through his initiative, and Sir Richard Carew Pole, that the Lions Summer Fair at Antony House came into fruition, which was a very successful event.

Jim was President twice for the Club.

It was through his persuasion that Lion Dave Rosson became District Governor for the Lions of South West. Jim represented the Torpoint Lions in proposing Lion Dave for the position at a convention, which he considered an honour for the club.

Jim was a very generous person and hosted two parties per year on behalf of the club, when he and Olive ran Coombe Farm, Cawsand.

They always provided a very warm welcome to all at Christmas time. Jim also would prepare one of the barns for a Summer party where some really wonderful times were shared.

Jim’s knowledge, wisdom and sense of humour will be sadly missed by the members of the club.

The club sends its condolences to Jim’s family.

The cheque was presented by President Lion Richard Pymm to Mike Furguson, the chairman of Torpoint Athletic Football Club youth team (11-18). Early morning rain soon cleared to let the sun shine for the Torpoint and Rame Lions fete.

The event was officially opened by town crier Clive O’Shaughnessy, Miss South West Jade RiceAlor and Lion President Richard Pymm.

As usual there were plenty of stalls and attractions in the main centre arena.

The young and older Coppola School of Drama and Dance pupils wowed the large crowd with several lovely dances all dressed in outfits to suit the dances they performed.

Carbeile Junior School field gun crew, fresh from winning all the trophies at Armed Forces Day in Plymouth did a full practice run then a full run achieving a great time. It was a great team event, well done to them all.

The real fun event saw a rather large tug of war rope came into the arena. A full boys-versesgirls battle commenced with the girls winning three pulls until several fathers joined the boys team to salvage some male pride with their only win. Well done girls.

To keep everyone fed and refreshed there was the customary Lions tea tent along with a bar and ice cream van.

There was plenty to entertain young and old alike with bouncy castles, swings, donkey rides, Punch and Judy and lots more. Stalls from many local charities and organisations were there to raise money for good causes. St John Ambulance and Coastguard volunteers were also at the event to advertise and maybe attract future members.

The Half Way Harmony sang lots of local sea shanties and popular songs to entertain.

Well done to all Lions and helpers that made the day so enjoyable for all; we all look forward to the 2019 fete.

g Fun Day is a huge success

Torpoint’s Jade Rice-Alor will be flying the flag for the South West at the Miss England finals on September 4.

She will be up against 49 other contestants from all over the country in a bid to lift the coveted title.

As part of her fund-raising efforts 22-year-old Jade and her family organised a Fun Day at Torpoint Athletic Football Club in August - and the brilliant weather brought out big crowds.

Jade was raising money for the Miss England charity Beauty with a Purpose and the local Luna’s Fund.

There was plenty for all ages at the Fun Day including food stalls, ice cream van, bouncy castles as well as several games to win prizes. The bar did a roaring trade - thanks to the very hot weather.

Jade said: “The Fun Day was absolutely amazing! So many people continuously support me, I am so thankful! To the bands, the princesses, our BBQers and my friends and family thank you so much for giving your time to make the event a success and to everyone that turned up, I hope you had a fab day!”

Final call for Cornwall’s beach lovers to join annual coastal clean up The UK’s leading marine charity says it hopes more people than ever before in Cornwall will take part in the 25th Great British Beach Clean from September 14 to 17 - an annual event run by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

The event around the county’s coastline will help ensure some of the most beautiful beaches aren’t being taken for granted. The Great British Beach Clean is part of the MCS Beachwatch programme. It not only spruces up hundreds of beaches around the coast, but volunteers also record the litter they find, and it’s this aspect that has really helped MCS change policy and behaviours over the last quarter of a century.

MCS is running at least nine beach cleans and surveys around Cornwall but so far only 37 volunteers have signed up. The charity says it’s really helpful if people register their interest online before the event to ensure organisers have enough kit to go round!

You can register right up until the very last minute at

The Great British Beach Clean is being sponsored by Waitrose for the second year in a row – cash from their carrier bag sales in England goes towards supporting MCS’ year round beach clean programme. MCS beach litter work is also supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The MCS beach clean event takes place every third weekend in September as part of the charity’s year round Beachwatch programme. Volunteers who get involved in Cornwall will be joining an army of beach cleaners not only around the UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, but all over the world as part of the global International Coastal Clean-up, which takes a snap shot of beach litter across the planet on a single weekend.

Lizzie Prior, MCS Beach and River Clean Project Officer, says volunteers are the lifeblood of the event and have been since 1994. She says the data they collect is vital: “Last year an amazing 123 volunteers took part in the

Stormy weather plays havoc with Cawsand Sailing Club’s Regatta

Cawsand Bay Sailing Club’s 2018 Regatta was hugely in doubt due to a threatening storm bringing heavy rain, big waves and very strong gusts.

Early on the morning of Saturday August 11, it was decided to try and run two back-to-back morning races, followed (hopefully after lunch), by an afternoon race.

On Saturday, sailors faced very challenging conditions with a very heavy sea state and strong wind gusts. On the Sunday morning, winds at Rame Head Coastwatch Station were gusting 30 knots from the south west, so only one race was held, close to Cawsand Beach, and suffered from periodic lack of wind, one extreme to the other!

The overall winner was Rob Sumner in his RS Feva, with his daughter Katherine crewing for three races and son George crewing for the Saturday afternoon race.

Second was Bruno Poet in his Laser2000, with Jo Pearton crewing. Third was Club Commodore Ian Turpitt in his RS200, crewed by Fleur Young. The Best Junior was Finlay Morgan in his Laser 4.7. A special award of Best Team Player was presented to young Benjamin Morgan.

Busy time for Rame Gig Club - at home and away from home!

Great British Beach Clean on Cornish beaches. We’d love to see even more people heading to Cornwall’s beaches and helping clean up at the events that have been organised at: Constantine; Crinnis Beach; Gunwalloe Fishing Cove Shore; Harlyn Bay; Porthcothan; Portreath; Trevone Bay; Treyarnon Bay and Watergate Bay West Each event only takes a couple of hours and, alongside the clean, 100 metres of beach are surveyed. The form is straightforward to complete, and helps MCS to add to the local and UK litter data picture, as well as the global view.

Each clean-up has an organiser so there’s plenty of advice on the day on how to fill in the simple data sheets. This information will be used by MCS to work with governments and industry in the charity’s ongoing work to stop litter getting on to our beaches in the first place.

Rame Gig Club members have had a really busy few weeks, which have included training, competitions and organising their own regatta along with the logistics that go with it.

The committee wish to thank everyone who helped the regatta to run like clockwork.

Without the help and support from local businesses and residents this would be a much harder task. The whole day was amazing, great rowing, great results and last but not least great partying.

Results have been really encouraging, over the season so far, to say the least.

The Under 14s travelled to Hayle for their battle of that age group. They were amazing and did extremely well achieving sixth place in a field of 34 gigs. They day before they had competed at Cattewater Regatta.

Rame’s Under 16 A crew came third in their championships at Newquay while the B crew gained sixth place in the plate final. This was a day after they had all competed at the club’s own regatta.

Early mornings and late evenings didn’t deter either age group from giving it their all. The club have great pride and admiration for all our young rowers. Nothing deters their spirit.

Definitely showing the spirit of Rame.’

Congratulations also to club member Tegan, who was chosen to row for Canada in Belfast in July. This was fixed seat rowing with 10 rowers and a coxswain. With 11 countries taking part over 13 races, it was a competition of endurance and stamina, over a couple of days. Tegan and the Canadian crew came ninth overall.

Queen’s Awards presented to Torpoint firm The Queen’s representative in Cornwall, Lord Lieutenant Colonel Edward Bolitho, visited Torpoint-based Resilience Communications Limited to present two Queen’s Awards and Scrolls with honoured guests including Chairman of Cornwall Council Mrs Mary May, High Sherriff of Cornwall Paul Young-Jamieson and Torpoint Councillor Rachel Tanner.

This is the first time a Cornish company has been awarded two Queen’s Awards in a single year, a fact welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant, who said: “We need more outstanding companies such as yours leading the high-tech revolution bringing wealth down here”. Presentations were followed by afternoon tea for staff, friends and local beneficiaries of charitable donations.

Tom takes on 500 mile charity cycle marathon in aid of Jeremiah’s Journey

Talented local musician Tom Calladine is about to embark on a 500 mile cycle ride to raise money for Plymouthbased Jeremiah’s Journey.

Tom, who is from Cawsand, will set off from Amsterdam on September 2 and return to the Rame Peninsula later in the month to raise funds for Jeremiah’s journey, a charity that works with adults, teenagers and children who are dealing with grief.

Tom said: “This is a charity close to my heart as it helped me and my family when my mother died when I was a child.

I feel as though dealing with death can be a difficult issue within western culture and is not something often talked about and is repressed. This charity provides the space and professional support through conversational and creative means to help families deal with loss.”

For the past year Tom, who is 25, has been been busking for a living, learning to paint and living in a artist community in Neukolln in Berlin, and taking some time out after being at univeristy and juggling multiple jobs as a care assistant,

childcare practitioner and one-to-one inclusion worker in Brighton.

Tom’s original plan was to cycle from Berlin, but he didn’t want to rush the trip as he has to be back in Cornwall by the end of September.

He found out he could get a coach from Berlin to Amsterdam with his bike, providing him with a much more viable and manageable option.

When he leaves Amsterdam Tom will travel along the Nordzee route, which hugs the coastline of Holland, taking him along coastal bike paths, sand dunes, ferries and, according to Tom ‘big bridges with lots of strong winds’.

Lest we forget This year we mark the 100th anniversary since the end of the First World War. There have been many programmes on the television and radio, and articles and books written to explain just what happened those 100 years ago.

And many of us I know have been amazed by the courage and selfless attitude portrayed, people’s strength and determination to overcome adversity and do their best.

But it is not just the end of the war we think about this year ...

It has been 100 years since the formation of the RAF. 100 years since women got the vote.

All events that have shaped the way we do things now and that have shaped the way we think about things now.

It is important that we remember these times - to learn from them - to grow from them - to move forward from them.

Because if we do not remember where we have come from, we will not know who we are.

All through history people have stood up and fought for what they believed.

We too can stand up and be counted for our values and beliefs, our sense of identity, our sense of mutual belonging: not only with those around us, but with those who have gone before – and those who are yet to come after us.

Anniversaries are all about remembering those who have shaped this world, and the example that we can set for those to come.

They are also a reminder to us all to stand up for what we believe, for honesty, for goodness, and for faith.

So it is right that we remember Jesus, who not only stood up for what he believed in, but also gave his life as a sacrifice for all of us.

We have thought about significant anniversaries, but no one before him or since has had such an impact on shaping the world and our beliefs.

We may not personally know a lot about the background of the anniversaries celebrated this year, but that does not stop us considering the impact they have had.

We may not personally have known Jesus, but that does not stop us from remembering what he stood for, and what he stands for today. That is love, peace, honesty and freedom.

Choir is honoured

The Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir was formally presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service at a ceremony in St James’s Church, Torpoint, as the Advertiser was going to press on August 24.

Colonel Edward Bolitho, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, made the award in front of choir members and council dignitaries invited from all of the Peninsula’s parishes.

The church was packed with members of the community whom choir chairman Clive Brinkmann suggested were the real heroes of the occasion.

The Rame choristers are the first men’s choir in Britain to receive the QAVS award. They have raised more then £250,000 since their inception in 1976, but their immediate accolade is for having championed a campaign for cancer diagnostic equipment at Derriford.

“The list of people who have made this possible is too lengthy to repeat, but we especially thank Jean Knight and Chrissey Oldham, the ladies who nominated us,” said Clive. “We thank all of the folk of the Rame Peninsula who opened their hearts and wallets to help us raise over £17,000 in a year for Derriford Oncology Molecular diagnostic testing appeal. This was a cause originally brought to the choir by Graham Maaz who sadly lost his life to cancer last November.”

Millbrook’s Maaz, and his wife Monica, effectively kick-started the choir’s campaign.

Before the equipment was installed, cancer patients from the most remote parts of Cornwall had to make round trips of up to 400 miles to be treated in Bristol.

“With the extremely generous fundraising from the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir, we have been able to purchase a set of reagents – £12,000 so far – that allows us to process a series of tissue samples known to have certain genetic mutations associated with cancers and are important to guide particular

treatments,” said Dr Jo Farrugia.

Derrford’s principal clinical scientist explained this would deliver: “a much more comprehensive test range than we currently are able to, and a much quicker service, as we will not have to send samples away for testing. This will ensure that cancer patients in the Peninsula will receive the most appropriate treatment, and will be able to start their treatment sooner.

“Very many thanks to everyone involved in this drive. In the laboratories, we are all extremely impressed with the astounding amount of money raised and acknowledge that you really deserve the Queen’s Award.”

She and laboratory directer Dr David Hilton were presented with a £5500 cheque on behalf of the hospital. This followed a £10,000 cheque they received at Christmas, and a further £1500 from HSBC community charity fund.

Clive also thanked Cornwall Council and various churches and halls who had allowed the choir to perform on their premises.

“But we couldn’t have achieved this without the dedication of our own choir members, Halfway Harmony (their folk sea shanty and rock ensemble), Jonathan Lewsey, our musical director, and accompanist Liz Sidebotham. Also our loyal supporters and helpers who have sold hand-crafted jewellery, made pasties, baked cakes and sold bric-abrac, organised raffles and served thousands of cups of tea and coffee at our functions. We thank you all.”

The choir’s treasurer, Barry Rundle, paid tribute to the Cornish Federation of Male Voice choirs for the part they had played in encouraging members to back the initiative.

Many of Cornwall’s choirs picked up the Rame baton, staging independent concerts of their own which further boosted the appeal. Many of these choirs were present in Torpoint as the Rame choir collected the award.

Visit to the Lost Gardens A group of eleven members took a trip to the Lost Gardens of Heligan recently.

Luckily the weather was ideal, being fine but not too hot, so there were no problems with the ladies becoming over-heated. When we arrived we all went our separate ways; some visited the vegetable gardens and melon house and saw pineapples being grown in the traditional way; some went to the Jungle, others to the Sculpture Garden or the farm, which has several rare breeds. I believe we all saw the Thunderbox room, where the gardeners had signed their names before going off to fight in the First World War. We could have happily stayed all day, there was so much to see but all too soon it was time to meet up for a delicious lunch. Before leaving there was time for a quick visit to the plant sale to stock up on plants for our own gardens. Sadly the flower beds had suffered this year from the long cold spring and recent very hot dry weather but even so it was a wonderful day and very much enjoyed by all.

The speaker at the July meeting was Sarah West who told us about her great-aunt Gabrielle West’s life during the First World War. Her aunt had kept a meticulous diary of her daily life, primarily to send to her brother in India. This diary had been found at the Imperial War Museum and was subsequently turned into a book by Sarah herself with the title ‘Home Front Diaries’.

Sarah’s ‘Auntie Bobby”’ the fifth child of a vicar, joined the Red Cross at the outbreak of WW1 as a cook but wanted to do more. She finally managed to become a special constable with responsibilities to protect the female workforces around the country.

President Rosemary Slee welcomed everyone to the August meeting and introduced the speaker for the evening, Janet Cowland who, following her brilliant talk on the Faberge eggs had kindly agreed to come back and talk about Brunel’s South West Legacy.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was the designer and chief engineer of the magnificent Tamar Bridge which opened in 1858, but his legacy includes so many other marvellous engineering feats which Janet showed us, including the the Thames Tunnel, Paddington Station and the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge. Brunel designed and built tunnels, viaducts, railways and ships, including the SS Great Britain. We were all fascinated with Janet’s talk of the history and wonderful achievements of this great engineer.

Rosemary thanked Mary for standing in at the last meeting, the committee for the lovely Summer Tea which everyone enjoyed very much and Joyce for doing the raffle where the monies raised will be sent to the Peninsula Medical School.

Sue confirmed the arrangements for the visit to Hendra Farm, near Looe, on August 31. Next meeting ‘Connecting with your Inner Healer’ will be on September 26 in St James Church Hall at 7.30 pm and visitors are always very welcome.

Torpoint Class of 2018 celebrate GCSE examinations success Students at Torpoint Community College, have achieved an array of outstanding GCSE examination results.

This is only the second year through the new English and Mathematics GCSEs and the first year though many of the new reformed GCSEs for most other subjects.

Hailed as the most significant change in the examination system since O-levels were replaced 30 years ago, the ‘more demanding, more fulfilling and more stretching’ examinations were introduced to help the UK better compete internationally.

The new GCSEs cover more challenging content and are designed to match standards in the strongest performing education systems elsewhere in the world.

The number of students attaining GCSE grades of 4 or above, identified as the standard pass, in English was 68%, mathematics 67% and in both English and Mathematics was 56%.

Dr Jeremy Plumb, acting headteacher said: “This achievement across the college is a reflection of each and

every inspired individual learner, together with the support and encouragement of their families.

“Congratulations to all students for their individual achievement and praise to all staff who have steered the students through the new courses and examinations.

The college is looking forward to welcoming a significant number of these students into the hugely successful Sixth Form at the college which again this year also celebrates good results and sees every student move successfully to their next steps.”

At this early stage of examination analysis, with several results yet to come in and the array of changes to courses, examinations and GCSEs, 51% of students gained a minimum of five or more GCSEs grades at C/4 or above including English and mathematics. Students achieved the highest grades of 9, an A* or a Distinction in a number of their GCSEs and Btec courses.

There were particular Torpoint Community College stars in terms of attainment this year and there are many other students who have achieved excellent personal bests, making

significant progress. The college congratulates all students for their own outstanding achievement.

The achievement of all individuals will be celebrated at a special awards ceremony in December 2018 when students collect their examination certificates.

Although it is difficult to make direct comparisons with previous years, due to the changes in GCSEs, it is clear from the results that the class of 2018 was a very special group and whilst students celebrated their achievements, individual subject areas celebrated student successes with above average pass rates in an array of different curriculum areas, including art, drama, English, Mathematics, PE, religious studies, Spanish, separate sciences and textiles.

Dr Plumb added: “All the staff and Governors at the college are extremely proud of our students’ achievements and are looking forward to watching them continue to achieve in their chosen journey after GCSEs and A-Levels. Well done.”
