Peninsula Trust launches ambitious programme

Millbrook’s affordable homes plan

A local Trust has launched an ambitious programme to create new affordable community owned homes for the residents on the Rame Peninsula.

The Peninsula Trust is an independent group, owned by its members - the residents of the Rame Peninsula, for the purpose of strengthening and supporting the Rame community.

Social housing is in very short supply within the five parishes of the Rame Peninsula, which is in the top five areas of Cornwall for second home ownership.

Private rental properties are expensive and hard to come by, often being snapped up within days.

Inflated rental costs can be out of reach for many families, with the added pressure of having to find staggeringly large deposits to secure housing. With private rentals, there is also the issue of quality control over maintaining a decent standard of housing.

Peninsula Trust general manager Simon Ryan said: “There is a very real need for housing that is genuinely affordable, and through talking to people and holding public events, our aim is to find out exactly what that need is, be that rooms to rent or three bed family homes.

“Working with Cornwall Council and investment bodies we aim to come up with a practical plan for our community and its residents. The project sits very comfortably within our framework of supporting our local community, highlighting need and creating long term sustainable solutions to very real problems that our local people encounter.”

The greatest threat to the future of the community is to the younger residents who are forced to leave the area to find homes and start families. Over time community is weakened, and unless something is done, the problem will gradually destroy the precious community spirit that means so much to those who live in the villages on the Rame Peninsula.

Arts, crafts and circus skills at Torpoint Arts Festival

Torpoint Arts Festival is a free colour inspired event for the people of Torpoint and the Rame Penisula to celebrate and enjoy the arts.

The one-day event takes place at the Council Chambers in Torpoint on Saturday November 26 from 11am to 4pm. Entry is free for all ages and everyone is welcome.

There will be art and craft on display along with wonderful work from the local schools. For families there will be crafts to make and scrap modelling and also a family drama workshop suitable for all.

Baba Yaga’s Circus will also be coming between 2pm-3pm to share their circus skills with you and there will be other performances throughout the day.

There will also be refreshments and somewhere to sit if you just want to come along and soak up the atmosphere.

The Trust would be interested in hearing from anyone who may have other ideas about housing, or perhaps have suitable houses or land for the programme. The Trust hopes to start on housing creation within the next two years, and has clear criteria for the project: • To create decent new homes, for rent that people can afford to pay.

• To never build on Greenfield sites.

• To ensure that new housing is created for and allocated to local residents • To tackle existing housing issues, whilst being sympathetic to infrastructure.

Raleigh sailor is named as Navy’s top PTI A sailor now based at HMS Raleigh has been recognised as the Royal Navy’s top physical trainer thanks to his work on board HMS Portland.

Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Fraser Bricknell was presented with the Tony Tyrwhitt-Bettridge trophy by Captain (Capt) Iain Cull, head of Naval Physical Development.

LPT Bricknell was a member of HMS Portland’s Ship’s Company for a nine-month deployment, which saw the Type 23 frigate travel over 40,000 miles through the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian, Pacific and South Atlantic Oceans.

The 27-year-old’s attitude and drive to make HMS Portland a fitter, healthier and more active unit singled him out for recognition and had an impact on every member of the ship’s company.

He contributed to both the operational capability of the ship and the morale of those on board. In 18 port visits he arranged 18 fixtures for the ship’s sports team and set up a programme of adventurous training which 72% of the crew took advantage of.

LPT Bricknell integrated well with the Royal Marines on board, which culminated in a re-creation of the 90 mile yomp across the Falklands undertaken by the Commandos during the 1982 conflict. The team completed the walk in three days.

LPT Bricknell said: “We were in the Falklands for Christmas. The walk was really hard-work. I think I underestimated how hard it would be, but finishing the walk was my highlight of the deployment. I will never, ever forget that walk. All the locals came out, including some Royal Marines who were there in 1982 and remained there to make their home. There were hundreds of people applauding us as we finished.”

LPT Bricknell originally joined the Royal Navy as a submariner in 2007, but achieved his long-term ambition to become a physical trainer four years ago.

HMS Portland was his first ship and as the PTI one of his additional roles was to drive the ship in and out of harbour. LPT Bricknell said: “It scared the life out of me the first time I had to take the ship into harbour, but really it’s just a case of copying what the Captain says, although there is little room for error. It’s crazy driving towards a jetty

with a massive ship.”

LPT Bricknell also found being on a surface ship much different to being on a submarine. He said. “It was hard to get used to at first. The watches on a submarine are six hours on and six hours off, but on the ship I was a day worker. I was the only physical trainer so I’d take three or four circuits every single day, including a morning abdominal session at 5.30 am. Even in Antarctica and South Georgia we were all there in full kit and head-gear with ice everywhere doing sit-ups on the flight-deck.”

Members of the public are invited to join the staff and trainees at HMS Raleigh on Thursday November 2 for a grand firework display.

Two times British-champions, Fantastic Fireworks, have been asked to provide the display, which will be viewed from the parade ground over St John’s Lake. Gates will open at 6.30pm and admission is free.

Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth will give a performance leading into a sunset ceremony, with a guard of honour drawn from the current group of recruits. Vintage fairground rides will be on site to entertain younger guests.

Refreshments, including hot dogs and burgers, will be available. No sparklers are allowed. There will be no parking on site except for a limited number for blue badge holders.

The branch in my opinion is one of the most professional in the Royal Navy and really hard-working. To be honest I never really considered the award. I thought I was just doing my job and doing what I was expected to do. I’m mega proud.”

The Tony Tyrwhitt-Bettridge trophy is named in memory of a well-respected Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer Physical Trainer. Capt Iain Cull said: “This is a prestigious award. We had a significant number of nominations and all those nominated were very operationally focussed and very good, but we had to pick somebody. In LPT Bricknell’s case he was at sea, not only doing his core role, but he had a high level of fitness and was engaged with the Command and the boarding team. He went over and above to develop the boarding team’s strength and conditioning to enable them to do their job and that’s the link to the operational output of the ship.”

Rame Gig Club took part in the Newquay Men’s County Championships which were held on September 30 having been postponed due to adverse weather and sea conditions.

Rame entered one crew which consisted of five youngsters three under 16s and two 17 year olds – who were joined by one veteran rower.

The sea conditions were lumpy with drizzly rain all day, but this did not deter the Rame crew. They went through to the second round finishing 26th out of 72 crews, overall. A brilliant effort by them as for most, if not all, this was their first Newquay Championships.

The U/14s & U/16s took part in the Cross Keys Challenge on October 7. The youngsters had a great day although the weather, once again, was not in their favour.

They were split into groups and then took part in gig racing, kayak/ canoe racing, tug of war and many more challenges.

The overall winners were Team Penlee. A very grateful thank you must go to Geoff and Isobel (Cross Keys) for supplying all the medals and trophies also Gloria and Ian (Shop in the Square) for supplying the youngsters with hot drinks.

The weekend of Saturday October 14 saw the club attend two events.

The first was the Tamar Challenge, a nine mile race from Saltash to Cotehele. Rame had two crews in this race: a Vets Crew and a Super Vets Crew.

Competition was fierce, especially between these two crews! The results, in their category, were Super Vets second and Vets third.

One Ladies crew travelled to the Appledore Supervet’s Regatta for the weekend. They were delighted to get through to the semi-finals, only to be stopped in their tracks (literally) by a sandbar.

Halfway through the course as all six gigs came up to the first mark, Rame were flying. The cox was shouting to the inside gigs ‘give water’ but to no avail as the three inside gigs hit the sandbar. The crew battled on in a very close run race.

All that said the crew had a great weekend and they are hoping to go back next year.

Bill’s Babes £500 boost for Coastwatch Ramehead Line dance group ‘Bill’s Babes’ from the Comrades Club in Torpoint have presented a £500 cheque to the National Coastwatch Ramehead towards the purchase of a new radar that they require.

The station at Ramehead is manned by volunteers who have to raise all their own funds. The line dance group has been running for 20 years and have raised over £23,000 for various charities.

ALPACA TREK

The weather held off for the Alpaca trek around Torcare on 22nd September. They spent time laying on the floor of the Nursing Home lounge much to the amusement of the residents and staff. They enjoyed stretching their legs at Porte Rouge in the garden. The photos say it all! Thanks to Hendra Farm for bringing Fleur and Little Man and for the beautiful rabbits.

HELE’S STUDENTS TACKLE TRAINING AT RALEIGH Members of the Hele’s School Combined Cadet Force (CCF) have tackled floods and fires during a visit to HMS Raleigh in Torpoint.

The Navy section of the school’s CCF spent a day at the establishment training in the state-of-the-art simulators used to teach sailors how to deal with emergencies at sea.

In the Damage Control Instructional Unit (DRIU), known as HMS Havoc, the students had to work together to stem the flow of water and save their ship from sinking.

Cadet Morgan Lewis, aged 15, who joined the CCF to find out what life in the Forces would be, said: “My dad was in the Navy for 22 years and I’d like to be an engineering officer.

The DRIU was pretty intensive; it was rocking left to right and the water was pumping in through the floor.

“We had to try to hammer the wooden wedges in place while water was going everywhere and spraying in our faces.

When I came outside I was still rocking back and forward. I enjoy getting involved. I think I learn best when I’m hands on.”

Cadet Lucy Castle, aged 15, who has

been a member of the CCF for two and a half years, said: “There were two teams in the damage control simulator and we had to go against each other to see who could complete the exercise the quickest. It was 100% adrenalin.

Fire-fighting was a completely new experience, but really good.”

Hele’s School CCF is one of over 350 units located in secondary schools all over the UK. Each one offers young people a broad range of challenging, exciting, adventurous and educational activities to develop their personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline. CCFs are an educational partnership between the school and the Ministry of Defence.

A CCF may include Royal Navy, Royal Marine, Army or Royal Air Force sections.

Chief Petty Officer Carol Strong, the CCF schools liaison officer for the South West region said: “This is about improving the Cadet experience and exposing them to as many Ministry of Defence assets as we can. It helps them with their team-work and leadership. It challenges them and gets them out of their comfort zone and generally improves their maturity.”

Cornish Man Engine to rise again next year The incredible Cornish Man Engine is coming back next year. The colossal engineering miracle is set to rise again and visit locations in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and beyond.

After recent news of the win of the ‘Best Arts Project’ in the prestigious National Lottery Awards, it has been announced that the largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain will rise again next Easter in a sparkling ‘Resurrection Tour.’

The Man Engine, powered by Volvo, steamed the length of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site last summer, unearthing a deep lode of passion and pride. Now, the colossal mechanical miner is set for his Resurrection Tour across Cornwall and Devon, before he drives further, into Somerset, South Wales and up to the North of England.

The creator of the Man Engine, Will Coleman of Golden Tree Productions, said: “Our big boy is setting off in the footsteps of the Cousin Jacks, but he needs to say a proper farewell to Cornwall, and our friends just over the Tamar in Tavistock, before he goes onto

Somerset on the first UK leg of the epic global tour that we hope one day to achieve.”

The Man Engine crawls at four metres high and ‘transforms’ to stand at 11.2 metres high, powered

by Volvo’s brand new L220H wheeled-loader. Five mining related venues across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset will each host two separate events; a daytime familyfriendly fun day and an ‘after dark’ edgy extravaganza.

On Saturday March 31 2018, the Man Engine will re-appear where he was last seen: at Geevor Tin Mine in the ultimate West. Then he heads east: on Easter Sunday April 1 he will be at Heartlands. On Easter Monday April 2 he will visit Cornwall’s ancient Stannary capital, Lostwithiel before crossing the Tamar to Tavistock on Tuesday April 3.

He will then travel to the old coal-mining town of Radstock in Somerset for Friday April 6, before heading onwards to South Wales (from Sunday April 8 until Thursday April 12) and then onto Ironbridge in Shropshire, Elsecar in Yorkshire, and to the foremost mining and quarrying equipment show at Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton in Derbyshire.

Will Coleman explained the difference between the new daytime and night-time events which will take place at each of the Cornish, Devon and Somerset venues saying: “Our ‘Afternooner’ will give families and ‘big kids’ the chance to really get to know their favourite giant miner: there will be an industrialscale feast of fun and frolics.

“The ‘Afterdarker’ promises an edgier explosive experience including white-hot pyrotechnics sparks will fly! Suffice to say, we are cranking up the experience that held everyone spellbound last year.”

It all went pretty bonkers and, due to the colossal demand and excitement, we had to encourage people not to come to certain events that we were expecting to be really busy and some people even got turned away!”

Will continued: “So this year, we want to make sure that everyone who is keen to see the Man Engine can definitely know that they will get to see him at a certain location, at a certain time. So, we are going to sell 3,000 super cheap tickets for each event.

“These earlybird tickets are available at just £5 per person (adult or child) for just five weeks, starting

from now! We really hope people will want to come out and support The Man Engine again. Perhaps buying tickets for friends and family for Christmas presents.”

The Cornish Mining World Heritage Site also announced a new sponsorship for a Cornish schools educational programme, that will be run in collaboration with Golden Tree Productions and the Man Engine Resurrection Tour supported by Cornwall Council.

The new project will involve participating teams of five students or apprentices being invited to a specially hosted STEAM. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) workshops with the Man Engine design and build team at one of four Cornish Mining World Heritage sites (Geevor Tin Mine,

Heartlands, Wheal Martyn, Wheal Annamaria).

These workshops will illuminate a little of Cornwall’s inspiring history of technological invention and innovation. Teams will also be invited to one of the Man Engine Resurrection events to compete in public and to discover the most efficient, innovative and entertaining inventions.

The Man Engine Resurrection Tour 2018 Earlybird tickets are available for each of the Cornwall and SW England events from manenginetickets.com at £5 per ticket (plus an additional £1 booking fee) for five weeks only or until 3,000 tickets have sold for each event. South West based company, the Ticket Store, are now providing an online and telephone Box Office service for the Torpoint venue of the internationally renowned Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth.

The Roebuck Theatre, situated at HMS Raleigh, has played host to many unforgettable concerts by the highly respected Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth over the years. The

eagerly awaited Autumn series kicked off in style last month with a rousing evening, up close and personal with Director of Music, Major Huw Williams and the band performing with their versatile style and showcasing the band’s many talented members.

“It’s a huge privilege to be directing this series of concerts at The Roebuck Theatre, which are a unique opportunity to get to know the Band of HM Royal Marines Plymouth,” said Major Williams. “We’ll be throwing everything at the programmes; the full gamut of our repertoire from the traditional military marches of which we are so proud, through classical overtures and virtuosic soloists, to movie scores and modern pieces. talent and versatility found among this extraordinary group of musicians”.

When the weather conditions turn against you plan B has to come into operation.

Torpoint’s Carnival was due to take place at Cambridge Field, but downpours, drizzle and wind changed all that. But instead of cancelling the annual event it was changed to take place in the Council Chambers.

It meant some events could not take place including the Junior field gun display, Royal Marine Cadet band, bouncy castle and decorated floats.

However, the day was still a great event with stalls, refreshments and indoor displays pleasing the large crowd which gathered.

The Coppola School of Drama and Dancers were the first to enthral the awaiting audience followed by an amazing sailors horn pipe dance by a trio of the TS Rame Sea Cadets Katlin, Alyssa and Katie who had been to Portsmouth to train.

They received a big round of applause for a great performance. On completion of their performance they

invited anyone to come and join them for a repeat performance and to the amusement of all watching several youngsters joined in; well done girls and to all who joined in.

After all the performances had taken place, the judges had the usual hard task of selecting winners from each category. They found the individuals and groups had made so much effort that it was hard to choose bteween vikings, fairies, dancers, nuns, Red Indians and footballers were all there – to name but a few.

Refreshments were available throughout the event as well as a really good selection of stalls displaying items for sale and helping to raise money for their charities.

To bring the event to a close a grand draw took place with some super items to be won, All in all after very short notice regarding the change of venue it was a very successful event. Well done to all the organisers and helpers, also to all those locals who supported the carnival.

The NatWest mobile branch serving Millbrook and the Cornwall Community has changed the location of its stop in Millbrook. It no longer stops at the Council Car Park on West Street. From the 26th of September the mobile branch began stopping at The Quay in Millbrook, at its usual time and date: Tuesday, 11:30 am to 12:00 noon.

The NatWest mobile branch has been serving the Cornwall Community for more than 10 years. A huge welcome to Leadville Parsons, who has become our latest member to join the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions.

Leadville is now retired but he used to be a motor mechanic before working for 18 years for Sir Richard Carew Pole and his wife, Lady Mary, on the Antony Estate. He continued his career as an HGV driver before his retirement.

Not one to settle down to a welldeserved restful retirement, Leadville belongs to several organisations. He is a Bard of Gorsedh Kernow, a nonpolitical and non-profit organisation that upholds the Celtic traditions of Cornwall, by passing an examination in the Cornish language.

Leadville is also chairman of the Torpoint and District Old Cornwall Society, a charity that helps to promote the Cornish language, preserves Cornish antiquities, and publishes information on a variety of all-things Cornish.

Leadville is also a member of the executive committee of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies as well as being the chairman of the Torpoint Diabetic Circle.

If all this was not enough, Leadville can be found strimming the footpaths of Antony Parish Council - and he still fits in a bit of DIY! When asked why he wanted to join the Torpoint and Peninsula Lions, he replied: “I decided to become a Lion to join other like-minded people in helping the local community, to enjoy the comradery, and have a little fun at the same time.”

Fancy a dip on New Year’s Day? Come on! Be brave! Don’t just watch others enjoying themselves. You too can have fun and raise some money at the same time.

Plans are now well under way for our next New Year’s Day dip. This is your chance to raise some much-needed funds for your favourite organisation, charity or community project, with 80% of your sponsorship going to your chosen charity and 20% going to the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions charity.

Fancy dress is actively encouraged to add some fun to the event (wear a wetsuit under your fancy dress if you would prefer).

There are several trophies to be won for the best dressed in various categories including: best individual, best small team (up to four people), best large team (over four people), best pub team, best under 14 individual or group and a Merit Award for Effort. There were some terrific entrants last time. Can you better them?

Presentation to Torpoint Archives The Torpoint Archives was recently presented with a Western Digital 16TB Home Duo Dual-Drive Personal Cloud Storage by the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions. In other words, a storage facility to safeguard our local heritage.

The Torpoint Archives, based in the local town council offices, provide an invaluable service to the community by providing the opportunity for people to research both written and photographic history of the town and surrounding areas. The safeguarding of the local area’s records, photographs and artefacts is paramount for future generations.

In order to secure this, a new storage facility has been provided by local Lions. For the techies amongst us there are now two 8TB hard drives which mirror each other thus saving work twice.

This is initially being set up to automatically back up everything that has been digitalised and currently stored across the hard drives of five computers.

Password protected, volunteers can now access information remotely from their own computers.

Paul Roper, vice chair of Torpoint Archives, said: “We believe, that by obtaining this drive, it will ‘future-proof’ all our records and artefacts for the next 20 years.”

Well, that is good to know. A big thank you goes to the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions for providing this equipment.

Celebrations continue for Torpoint Lady Singers The Torpoint Lady Singers 30th Anniverary celebrations continued with a joint concert with the Holman Climax Male Voice Choir, one of the premier male voice choirs in Cornwall.

The concert on Sunday October 15, at St James Church, Torpoint, was an outstanding success and one of the highlights of a special year.

Fittingly the concert was to raise funds for the Olly McKay Fund.

Olly is a six year old boy who has been suffering with a rare form of cancer since he was one year old, and the fund raises money for Derriford Children’s Cancer Service.

The concert was enhanced by the soloist William Shimell, an interntional opera singer and film star living in Torpoint. The Lady Singers were delighted to welcome John Payne as the compere for the evening.

The Torpoint Lady Singers chose some of their favourite songs from their extensive repertoire, which included One Voice, Stormy Weather, Everything’s Coming up Roses, and I have a Dream.

The choir was conducted by musical director Sylvia Fraser, and Sue Westwell, accompanist.

William Shimell, accompanied

by Sylvia Fraser, set the scene and transported everyone to the beautiful city of Florence, relating the story first in the musical langauge of Italy, and then in English.

He sang two Italian Madrigals, with the power, expression and control of his voice bringing a new dimension to the evening.

The choice of music ranged from Singers of the World Unite, I Write the Songs, Comrades Song of Hope, Sanctus, Shall we Gather at the River, Sing Your Way Home and concluding with Amen (This Little Light of MIne), conducted

by Andrew Thomas their musical director, accompanied by Ria Clemens.

The choir was was given a standing ovation, and it is hoped it won’t be the last time they travel up to Torpoint.

Ollie’s mother Emma spoke movingly and bravely about her son, some of whose wishes they are hoping to fulfil in between treatment. His wishes include going to Disney World, the Eifflel Tower and his love of Lego.

Organisers hope the concert will enable some of this to happen.

Half of the money raised will go to Derriford Children’s Cancer Service. and a representataive from the Centre was their to explain what the service aims were. A buffet supper was provided by the Ladies.

Chris Trethewey, Torpoint Lady Singers chairperson thanked the musical directors, accompanists,

soloist, compere, St James Church and last but not least the two choirs and the audience.

She presented a Pennant depicting Torpoint Ferry to the Holman Climax Male Voice . The magnificent sum of £622 was raised. Torpoint Lady Singers would like to thank everyone who supported the concert, a very special evening in their Anniversary Year.

Earlier in October, The Torpoint Lady Singers performed a Joint concert with The Callington Singers at Cornerstone Church.

The two choirs chose completely contrasting programmes. The Callington Singers with musical director Graham Williams and accompanist Mark Smith delighted with music including Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and two John Rutter songs For the Beauty of the Earth and A Gaelic Blessing.

The Torpoint Lady Singers chose to sing songs from the shows, including The KIng and I, West Side Story, and South Pacific. completing their programme with Every time I feel the Spirit and Unchained Melody.Afternoon tea and cakes was served by the Torpoint Ladies and a sum of £235 was raised.

Share your favourite autumn colour photos and you could win a holiday in a National Trust cottage So what’s your favourite spring or autumn?

Autumn is a time when nature produces her own fireworks. Trees and shrubs turn from a multitude of different greens to reds, yellows, bronze and gold almost as if the trees want to be noticed as the days shorten and the nights lengthen.

There are a lot of factors that come into play to determine whether the autumn will be full of colour or not. The most critical are weather related but the best ingredients for a delicious autumn bake are; gardens full of deciduous trees and with a liberal sprinkling of Acer, Nyssa, Liquid Amber, Beech, Maple, Ginkgo, Cornus, Parrotia, Cercidiphlyllum amongst others. Add to that some cool, bright and crisp weather, some warm clothes and you’ve got the recipe for a great fiery brew.

To tempt you out to catch some of nature’s firework displays, the National Trust in the South West wants you to help plot autumn colour across the South West and in doing so be in with a chance of winning a stay in a National Trust holiday cottage worth up to £750.

To enter the competition you must submit a photo taken by you, of one of the National Trust South West places looking ‘Autumnal’ and enter it on the National Trust South West Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages. You must also tag your Entry with the hashtag #ntleafwatch and tag the location of your photo.

Ian Wright, National Trust garden’s advisor, said: “Autumn is definitely my favourite time of year. The colours in our gardens at this time of year are stunning and certainly give the colours that make up the American Fall a bit of stiff competition.

“But with your help this year we hope to discover the moment when autumn reaches its best across the region while enjoying some of the most spectacular colours the season has to offer.’

“My favourite plant for Autumn Colour would be Cercidiphyllum japonicum. It’s sometimes referred to its Japanese name of katsur. An amazing sweet scent of burnt caramel (or toffee apples) as the leaf breaks down before autumn fall, combined with beautiful delicate leaves that turn yellow/gold before they fall. I make sure I go and see the many examples at Knightshayes in Devon, but many other gardens have them too.

“Picking my favourite places for autumn colour is difficult but I would have to include Stourhead, as the landscape and water make a fantastic setting for a good autumn show. But do check out Killerton and Lanhydrock as not to miss venues.

“And as for landscape scale colours, head to Greenway, Castle Drogo and Trelissick, all who look out on vast natural oak woodlands. With the right conditions, you can get the ‘wow’ factor here just as much as the blousy ornamental exotics contained within gardens.”

And now for the science bit…Most leaves are a green colour in summer this is created by a pigment, which is a natural substance called chlorophyll. But there are two others that create colours and these are anthocyanins which create the reds and pinks and carotenes which are the yellow.

As autumn progresses the temperature drops and the days shorten which start an unstoppable process. The production of chlorophyll stops and breaks down so the green fades and the yellows become more visible.

The key is the amount of time the sugar becomes trapped in the leaf before it drops, as this helps the production of anthocyanins, the reds and pinks. So cool weather stops chlorophyll production whilst sunny weather will aid the production of more trapped sugar and in turn the more visible anthocyanins (reds).

Now you have some suggested locations, ingredients and the science behind autumn colour.

It’s now a case of weather watching, finger crossing, getting your boots and warm clothes on and getting out to a National Trust place in the South West and capturing all of nature’s dazzling displays, you might even win a holiday. Mayor’s monthly message In September the Deputy Mayor, eight other members of the Town Council and I had a most informative and fact-finding evening at the Community Fire Station in Torpoint.

My thanks once again to Station Manager Steve Gill and Fire Fighter Shane Gill, who between them explained the workings of many pieces of apparatus used by them and the rest of the crew operating from the station.

Community spirit must be mentioned yet again when you realise that Steve and his crew are all employed as retained fire fighters who give their time to keep us safe in our homes, on the roads and in our local community.

Training nights are usually held on Monday evenings and members of the public are welcome to go along and watch with prior notification. New retained fire fighters are urgently required to maintain this valuable service within the town. If you are willing and able why not contact Steve for an informal chat and obtain further information on this role.

The wet weather did not dampen the carnival spirit on September 30. The decision to relocate to the Council Chambers was made early in the day and as the day progressed proved the right thing to do.

My sincere thanks to the Torpoint Town Partnership, Andy Martin Production Support, Town Councillors, caretakers, stallholders and all the organisations that made the day such a great success. It was nice to see the fancy dress competition so well supported by young and old and everyone enjoyed the spectacular costumes that ranged from Viking Long Boat to a superfluity of nuns.

On Monday October 16 Maureen and I had the pleasure of attending a presentation given by Cornwall Councillor John Crago, to Claire Stephens, the recipient of the People of Courage Award for 2017 at the Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club. The surprise event was attended by many of Claire’s family and friends: well done Claire.

I am pleased to report on a recent meeting held between representatives of Torpoint Town Council and Cornwall Council about the arrival of travellers at Horson Sports Field. Discussions are ongoing, but it is hoped that preventive measures will soon be in place to stop trespass happening again in the future, and if it should happen then a remedial action plan

Torpoint Neighbourhood Watch Office Training session at Torpoint Fire Station can be brought in immediately. I hope to provide an update on this matter in next month’s column.

The Council is keen to pursue the possibility of CCTV coverage throughout Torpoint, resulting in a delegation of councillors making a visit to Tolvadden Control Centre to see for themselves the cameras in use, and how the surveillance can benefit the town from both a safety and security element.

The Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety Service is based at Tolvaddon, Camborne and it is hoped that if installation takes place we will become part of a wider network of CCTV coverage throughout South East Cornwall, which will be a great benefit to both our town and neighbouring communities.

The Council recently launched the Torpoint Town Council Logo Competition. It is hoped that the winning logo will be used on official stationery, posters and the town council website. The competition is opened to any individual and the entry judged the best will win an iPad. Further information regarding terms and conditions, style and content of the logo can be found on the town council website www.torpointtowncouncil.co.uk and posters in key locations in the town. Recently I watched the BAFTA award winning film ‘I, Daniel Blake’. In it, the main character loses his job and is forced to rely on the benefits system. It’s a ‘must-see’ film, and highlights the injustice of our benefits system.

This film will be the chosen movie which will be watched at our monthly St James’ Film Night on November 3 at 7pm.

Throughout the Bible we read of a God who fights injustice and of Jesus who came to bring an end to injustice. Jesus was always on the side of the poor or those marginalised by society: the sick, the lame, women and children.

It’s seems to me, that Jesus would also be on the side of those who fight to keep their benefits when their need is legitimate.

Over recent weeks, I have sat and listened with many people who are struggling to make ends meet and to receive the help they desperately need. Jesus sits with them too. He hears them and fights for them, and asks us to join in this fight with him.

Will you join in the fight against injustice, and speak out against the rise of injustice in our country? The call is to be a modern day, Good Samaritan; reaching out to those who need it

most at their most vulnerable time.

As Churches Together in Torpoint and District we aim to alleviate some of this injustice by running a Foodbank collection point for those who would otherwise go hungry.

We run the Christmas ‘home alone’ lunch for those who would otherwise spend Christmas on their own, and at St James’ we host Cafe Abundance in the church hall on a Thursday lunch time, a ‘pay-as-you-feel’ cafe, which has great food and company. If you haven’t been yet, you are missing out!

We also have a focus on Christian Aid, a charity working in the most vulnerable areas across the world, as well as supporting other charities. And we have a team of Street Pastors seeking to help those who are vulnerable out on the streets on a Saturday night.

Jesus wants us all to fight against injustice.

One way you could help to fight injustice would be to volunteer just a bit of your time, so that you too can say that you didn’t walk by but you reached out to help.

Be a modern day Good Samaritan. The options are endless, but those who take up this call are few.

Remembering Elvis Torpoint

Guest speaker, Jack Asquith, gave a brilliant talk entitled ‘Just Elvis’. The title came about because unlike many other famous singers and musicians of the time, Elvis used his birth name and never changed it.

We learned of Elvis’ life story from his birth in l935 to his passing in l977 including much more about his family, his musical and film career and his beloved home, Graceland.

The talk was accompanied by many of Elvis’s well known and not so well known songs. The first recorded song sold over 20,000 copies within a couple of days and Elvis made 33 films and two documentaries as well as around 734 singles. It was a brilliant and enthusiastic talk by Mr Asquith.

The Torpoint Carnival went ahead indoors due to the bad weather, and our cake stall was a sell-out.

Members enjoyed a super day out visiting the Bodmin Plant and Herb Nursery and the Barnecutts Bakery in Bodmin and three members attended the Autumn Council Meeting in Truro where the afternoon speaker was Victoria Hislop who spoke on her writing, and how she researches the history of the places she is writing about.

Her latest novel, Cartes Postales from Greece, includes pictures in postcard form.

Variety is the spice of life at Wilcove WI

Wilcove WI have enjoyed listening to two speakers about very different subjects during the past two meetings.

During the September meeting Christine Meakin spoke movingly about her life as an adopted child, based on the book she had written as a tribute to her adoptive mother.

As a contrast, for the October meeting Kristin Hunt gave a fascinating insight into the magic and rituals involved in the preparation of the dead and their tombs in ancient Egypt which gave us a better understanding of life at that time.

Members of the WI were busy helping at the Harfest event in Millbrook in September, providing refreshments including homemade cakes. The day was dry although the ground was very muddy and facilities in the tea-tent were basic, but there were plenty of customers and the funds raised have been split equally between the Rame Conservation Trust and the WI. Some members had yet another different

experience in October, taking a tour of the submarine HMS Courageous in Devonport Dockyard.

The guide was an exsubmariner who provided a comprehensive and fascinating insight into the operational world of the ‘Silent Service’. Tours are available free of charge to the general public and more information can be obtained by emailing navynbcd-book1@mod.uk

Information about another secret world awaits members for the November meeting, when the speaker, Mike Griffiths, will talk about ‘MI6 in West Cornwall’. The meeting is on Tuesday November 21 at 7.30 pm in Cove Hall, Wilcove. New members would be very welcome.

The Wilcove WI Coffee and Craft Morning will be held on Saturday November 11, from 10am to 12.30pm, in Cove Hall, Wilcove. The admission charge of £3 (50p children) includes refreshments and a range of craft stalls will be there for an early Christmas shopping opportunity.
