Top awards for Torpoint company A Torpoint company has been awarded an extraordinary two Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the UK’s highest official awards for British businesses.

Still time to invest in The Old Ship Inn community share offer More than £42,000 has so far been raised to help one of Cawsand’s oldest pubs rise from the ashes - literally.

The Old Ship Inn stood empty for many years, before it was destroyed by fire in 2013, leaving an empty ruin.

Now the Peninsula Trust have bold plans to bring the derelict eyesore back to life.

They want to restore the Grade 2 listed building and turn it into an important community asset.

The Peninsula Trust has over 600 local members and it aims to raise the cash needed for the project by offering local residents the chance to buy shares in the new enterprise.

The Community Share Offer, which opened on March 15 and closes on May 10 will allow private individuals to invest in The Old Ship as part-owners, with a modest dividend once the enterprise is trading profitably.

On the ground floor, the bar area of The Old Ship will be re-created, using the memories and photos of local people.

In addition the proposals include a café,

large children’s area and also a village information section for locals and visitors at the rear. The trust is also hoping to build a small Heritage Centre to be supported by local experts.

Four flats will take up the upper floors, which will be let at reasonable rents to local residents on secure, long-term tenancies. This will bring year-round life back to Garrett St and provide vital living accommodation in the village.

General Manager Simon Ryan said: “Communities that come together can achieve amazing results. By raising the cash needed to buy and rebuild the Old Ship, the whole community can become actively involved in creating a major new community asset.”

Rame Gig Club in action at Dartmouth Rame Gig Club took part in Dart Gig Club’s regatta in Dartmouth and enjoyed a good day’s racing - despite the bitterly cold weather.

The starts were somehwat chaotic at times due to the big tides. This caused some of the races to be later than originally planned.

However, it did not deter Rame from having a great day achieving some brilliant results, this early in the season.

The Ladies competed in four of the races claiming 5th place in three of them and an 8th in one. Rame men entered five races. They had a 4th, 6th, 7th and two 8th places.

The club’s youngsters are setting the benchmark, once again, with the Under 16s claiming 1st place in their race. Two of the Under 14s - Hannah and Sophie - made up a crew with Caradon Under 14s and went on to win top honours as well.

It was the first competitive racing of the 2018 season and the winter training in the fitness suite is certainly paying off.

It’s not all about the youngsters at Rame.

The club’s more mature rowers (50+) spent a weekend in Appledore, competing over two days in the Appledore Super Vets regatta.

The two men’s crews made it into the semi finals and had a great weekend of

rowing - as did the lady rowers earning themselves a place in the final and then coming 5th overall. Fran and Irene made up a crew with rowers from two other clubs.

This crew did amazingly well, considering they had never rowed together, finishing 2nd in the ‘Plate Race’.

In May Rame will travel to the Scilly Isles for the World Championships. Results and photos will be in the June issue.

Tom in action for Truro FC

Goalkeeper Tom McHale gets call-up for England Talented young goalkeeper Tom McHale has had a sensational year playing for Truro FC - and his outstanding performances have now earned him a call to the England C squad.

“The call came totally out of the blue,” said Tom, who started playing football for Torpoint Youth Athletic FC as an eight year old. “It’s the pinnacle of non-league football.”

Tom, 22, will fly with the England squad to face Ireland in Dublin later this month and can’t wait to meet his team mates.

The squad is made up of the best players in non-league football, mainly from the Vanarama National League (previously known as the Football Conference).

“When Truro’s chairman called to tell me I was in the England squad I was stunned. I never had an inkling at all. It’s a very proud moment for me - I couldn’t wait to tell my family. I am really looking forward to the experience.

“Getting that news was brilliant for me and the club. Hopefully we can get promotion and then I can start focusing on that game against Ireland on May 27.

“It’s one of those things I want on my CV. I know a few people who’ve been in and around the England C squad and they’ve told me how good it is and how brilliant the set-up is.”

Tom, who grew up in Torpoint, spent eight years with Torpoint Youth Athletic before joining the Plymouth Argyle Development squad at the age of 16.

His hard work and determination, along with a commitment to continually improving his skills and knowledge of the game have certainly paid off for the young shot-stopper.

He has spent four seasons at Truro FC and after going out on loan to Willand and Weymouth, broke into the team as first choice keeper in the current season.

high praise from many quarters, including the NonLeague Paper’s football pundit Scott Davies. He listed Tom as one of the three most promising players in National League South, tipping him as a potential Football League player.

It was Tom’s brilliant late penalty save against Hampton & Richmond which helped Truro to reach the first round of the FA Cup - with a lucrative tie against former Premier League club Charlton.

“I would never have dreamt as a kid that I would end up playing in goal at The Valley - a former Premier League ground. It was a boyhood dream come true in every sense,” said Tom. Truro became the first team from Cornwall to reach the first round of the FA Cup for nearly 50 years.

“Although we lost 3-1, on another day we could have at least drawn the game,” said Tom, who made a number of crucial saves during the match.

Tom has also played a key role in helping Truro to a potential play-off place in National League South.

Success in the play-offs would take Truro into the National League, one step down from the Football League.

“It’s been a great season for us,” said Tom, “and it got better in April with the news that Cornwall Council voted to make £3 million available for the development of the Stadium for Cornwall.

Planning permission for the 6,000 capacity, multisport stadium has already been granted and the aim is to have it built before the start of the 2019-20 rugby and football seasons.

The Stadium for Cornwall will be used by Truro FC, Cornish Pirates and Truro and Penwith College.

Tom told BBC Radio Cornwall: “The club’s got a great future ahead of it. We can start focusing on the promotion chase knowing the stadium hopefully will start being built in the near future.”

When he’s not training or playing for Truro, Tom is involved with another local success - mobile caterers CornishPod.

Cost of disabled car park spaces to be reduced Cornwall Councillors have voted unanimously to keep the new reduced fee of £350 for providing residential disabled parking bays in Cornwall, and endorsed the work being undertaken with disability groups to ensure that Cornwall remains in step with other local authorities when setting the charges for providing disabled parking bays in the future.

The reduced charge of £350 for residential disabled parking bays has already been implemented across Cornwall following consultation with disability groups.

Thirty-six new applications have been received since the fee was changed.

In the longer term, councillors agreed that the disabled parking application process should be updated in consultation with Disability Groups,

to align with the governments new Personal Independence Payment Scheme. They also agreed that future charges will take into account similar comparisons with neighbouring authorities in the region.

Cornwall Council cabinet member for Transport, Geoff Brown said: “This means we will be able to offer our disabled residents the opportunity to put in place disabled parking spaces close to their homes, where there is a justified need, at a cost of £350. This is in line with or slightly less than many other local authorities.“ He also confirmed that four applicants who had recently been charged more than the £350 charge will be refunded the excess as soon as possible.

Farewell to Pat Torcare has said goodbye to a long-serving member of staff, wishing her all the best for a happy retirement after 34 years with the company.

Pat Knell knocked on the door of the Nursing Home in June 1984 asking for a job. She was shown in and an interview took place sitting on the floor of the dining room. Naturally, she got the position and started the next day as a domestic, her first task being unpacking new kitchen utensils, while the first two residents arrived. That, in fact, was the first day the Nursing Centre opened its doors.

Liz Fourniss could see potential in Pat immediately and as the years rolled on, Pat attended college, soon becoming housekeeper, then deputy manager of The Old Vicarage in Antony, then the manager. Pat then had a hand in starting Torcare’s Domiciliary Care Team, running both

successfully for 20 years. Pat became extremely knowledgeable and soaked up any training course available to her.

Pat then used her talents, moving back to the Nursing Home, as the company’s training and development manager, seeing the potential herself in new staff and encouraging them to achieve all they possibly could, for over 11 years.

Seven years ago Torcare acquired Porte Rouge and, of course, Pat was put in charge for the period it took to find a full-time manager. Pat worked tirelessly bringing it up to the standards required.

Now Pat and her husband Fred are looking forward to time spent away on quiet camp-sites with their caravan. Pat loves her garden and her hobbies have always been card making and knitting, which she never had time for, and she hopes to take up a new hobby of rock climbing.

Premier League comes to Torpoint…

A number of football memorabilia items are going under the hammer in support of Torpoint Youth Football Club. The auction is being organised by Richard Austin who is East Cornwall’s Provincial Grand Primo 2018 for the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes.

Part of Richard’s responsibilities as Chair of the Provincial Grand Primo is to raise money for a specific charity during 2018. Richard has kindly selected Torpoint Youth Football Club as his charitable cause this year. Over the past six months he has written to a number of football clubs including premier league teams to ask for donations to the auction. His hard work has paid off with a number of items of football memorabilia going under the hammer on 28th April at Torpoint Chambers of

Commerce. The event starts from 7pm.

Steve Foster, chairman of the Club said “Torpoint Youth Football Club is very grateful to have been selected as this year’s charity. We hope football fans get behind this auction and are generous with their bids. Richard’s efforts and the money raised will continue to support our thriving club with teams of local boys and girls from u11s to u18s”.

Items include several signed football shirts and signed photographs.

A real treat is an England shirt signed by the senior team in 2007. Signatures include Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and John Terry. There are also a number of signed photos, including Gareth Bale and a football pennant signed by the Plymouth Argyle squad.

by Mike Ferguson of Rame Framing in Antony village, near Torpoint. Mike is also Treasurer for Torpoint Youth Football Club and has kindly agreed to be the auctioneer for the evening.

Message from the Mayor Lambert Kiese I’m delighted and honoured to inform you that I have been reselected by my fellow councillors to lead the Town Council as Mayor for the Civic Year 2018/2019.

During my past 12 months in post I have had the privilege to meet many inspiring individuals who contribute in many ways to make our town such a wonderful place to live and raise our families.

My fellow councillors and myself continue to strive to get the best propositions for the town wherever we can.

The foundation stones for many new and exciting initiatives were laid last year, and it’s hoped that many will come to fruition over the next 12 months.

The rejuvenation of Fore Street, and open street markets are two schemes that are nearing completion and should be finalised shortly.

The Town Council now has the power to issue licences to operate markets in Torpoint. All markets held in Torpoint are licenced and operated in accordance with the provision of part 3 of the Food Act 1984.

Ongoing dialogue continues with Cornwall Council regarding devolution of several of our play parks, that once under our jurisdiction will be improved and maintained to an exceptional standard for everyone to enjoy.

Q&A TORPOINT SIREN FALSE SOUNDING EVENT, DECEMBER 2017 Q. How was the emergency siren set off in error?

A. Maintenance was being carried out in Devonport Naval Base which affected the electrical supply to the siren at HMS Raleigh. An error occurred when the power was reinstated to the siren, causing the siren to be sounded. The emergency authorities at the NB weren’t aware that the Raleigh siren was sounding because it can’t easily be heard in the dockyard.

Q. Why did the siren sound for so long?

A. The authorities in the Naval Base were not immediately

aware that the Raleigh siren was sounding. It was only when personnel in the Emergency HQ were notified that they turned off the false alarm.

Q. Who was to blame?

A. It was a combination of the design of the control panel, the fact that maintenance was being carried out and operator error.

Q. What actions have been taken to make sure this can’t happen again?

A. The Raleigh siren can now only be activated manually.

Q. Why did it take so long to reassure people that the siren was a false alarm?

A. The MOD has to go through a series of protocols between the two operators on the Devonport site - ie the MOD and Babcock - as well as the civil authority of Plymouth City Council before any factually correct messages could

be formally released. We are looking at speeding up this process.

Q. What should people do if they hear the siren - how do we know it’s for real?

A. The emergency siren is primarily sounded for notification to personnel on the Devonport site that there is a problem. In the highly unlikely event that the siren is sounded for real, members of the public are advised to take actions as provided in the emergency public information leaflet. Online information can be found at: www.plymouth.gov.uk/search/site/emergency%20 planning. Essentially on hearing the siren people are advised to go indoors and stay there until further notice by the Devon & Cornwall Police or notification via the media.

Q. Not everybody in Torpoint has the booklet ‘What To Do In the Event Of A Nuclear Emergency’ - how do I get a copy?

A. Yes, a meeting was held in March with the MOD, Plymouth City and Cornwall Council emergency planners where discussions took place about warning and informing, how the false alarm occurred and future closer co-operation between the organisations.

Torpoint Memory Café feels the beat!

First Street Market on May 27

The rafters were raised recently when Torpoint Memory Café let off some steam playing the drums!

With moraccas, tamborines and drums large and small, members had a lovely afternoon making swinging rhythms in the company of Drums 4 Fun, Cornwall’s percussion experience workshop.

The benefits of music for everyone - but especially those who have mental health problems – can be enormous and especially useful to stimulate memories in those with dementia.

Torpoint Memory Café meets on the third Wednesday of each month at St James Church Hall from 2pm to 4pm. Anyone is welcome to attend, particularly those living with mental health problems and their carers.

Prestigious award for choir Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir was among three voluntary groups who were commended by Cornwall’s Lord Lieutenant, Colonel Edward Bolitho, at a recent ceremony in County Hall, Truro.

The occasion was a reception to mark their nomination as one of three Cornish candidates for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

More than £16,000 raised in recent months for Derriford Oncology diagnostic equipment, combined with numerous other community contributions, prompted their independent nomination by two Rame residents for what is regarded as the MBE for voluntary groups.

They joined Falmouth Age Concern Befriending and Falmouth Cruise Ship Ambassadors at the reception hosted by Cornwall Council chair, Mary May. Colonel Bolitho presented each group with a framed parchment which was accepted on behalf of the choir by their oldest member, 92-year-old Fred Luckraft. Twenty of the choir (half the full complement) were invited to perform three songs: Nessun Dorma, Bohemian Rhapsody, and their haunting signature number, Minadhu Breaks. It’s about the Rame Peninsula, written by Millbrook’s Pete Staniforth.

Congratulating the three organisations, Colonel Bolitho said: “Each time the nominations for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service are announced, it shines a light on the range and quality of voluntary organisations working in Cornwall, without whom we would be very much worse off. Whether or not these three organisations achieve the award, they are all doing great things.”

nominees, and applauded their commitment to helping others, describing it as “a truly Cornish trait”.

The Queen’s Award is presented annually to mark outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community. Winners of the award, inaugurated in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee, are announced on June 2 – the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation.

The choir has enjoyed generous community support, most recently for a coffee morning in Kingsand Institute which raised more than £600.

They also performed on April 6 with Liskeard ladies choir, Keltique, in what proved a marvellous joint effort in St Stephen’s Church Saltash. The two choirs are to host for a further event together, ‘Musical Showtime,’ to be staged in Torpoint Council Chambers (7.30pm) on October 12.

There was a six-day tour of Normandy and Brittany in mid-April, with several concerts, starting in Cherbourg, and visiting the D-day beaches and museum at Arromanches, before returning via Porspoder, Bénodet, Quimper, and Roscoff.

There are coffee mornings in Kingsand Institute on May 12 and 26 (10am - 12 noon) followed by evening concerts. On May 12 they perform in St Michael’s Church, Newquay (7.30pm) with Newquay and Burraton Male Voice Choirs, who have generously agreed to donate the proceeds to the Derriford Oncology charity. And on May 26 they sing in Millbrook Methodist Church (7.30pm).

Torpoint Mosquito push the boat out Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club has a full events calendar for May with free water-sports tasters followed by the annual beer festival with live music every day.

At Torpoint Mosquito, weather permitting, between 10am and 12 noon on both May 5 and 19 there will be free sailing and windsurfing tasters available.

Everyone is welcome although tasters are not suitable for very young children and children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

“We’re inviting the local community to come down to have a go at sailing or windsurfing, see what the Torpoint Mosquito has to offer and get involved. Who knows, you might just get hooked!” said Bob Holder, training principal at the club.

“There is no need to book - just come along and have a go but dress appropriately and warmly with soft-soled shoes that can be worn in the water. And bring a change of clothes and a towel - you may get wet!”

Then over the late spring bank holiday the focus switches onshore - Torpoint Mosquito’s famous annual beer festival takes place between Friday May 25 and Sunday May 27. Everyone is welcome to go along to the club for a great weekend full of amazing live music with a wide range of beers ales and ciders to enjoy. With dinghy and yacht racing taking place every week, a thriving cadet section, regular windsurfing sessions, scuba diving meets and social events, Torpoint Mosquito has a lot to offer.

Fifteen different professions, ranging from chef to submariner (and everything in between!), came in to school for the children to rotate around and experience parts of the jobs they could do when they’re older.

The children loved it and look forward to all they could be when they’re older.

As one pupil said: “This day has been so exciting and has shown me lots of different jobs I could do when I’m older if I keep working at school!”

Torpoint students success in maths challenge Fifteen of Torpoint Community College’s top mathematicians in Years 9, 10 and 11 volunteered to take part in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge.

The Maths Challenge is a one hour paper that contains a variety of questions that involve puzzles, problems and logic questions as well as maths, which make them challenging and enjoyable to those taking part.

It is a national competition with the best mathematicians from all over the UK taking part. The paper is designed to challenge the most able students and get them to think about the maths skills that they need to use. There were some great results at Torpoint Community College with four of the students participating receiving awards.

Evan of Year 11 achieved a bronze award, Best in Year 11 and Best in School. Genna of Year 11 also received a bronze award.

May Day! May Day! May Day! The ‘Black Prince’ Flower Boat Procession is due to take place on Monday May 7 in the villages of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand, on the beautiful Rame Peninsula.

Money raised from this fun-packed event will go to the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club.

In order to mark the arrival of the month of May and say farewell to Spring and Summer, the ‘Black Prince’ boat is ceremoniously carried shoulder high by ratings from HMS Raleigh through the villages. It is followed by a colourful array of singers, dancers, Town Criers, the May King and Queen, children and villagers.

People along the route are encouraged to decorate their houses with red and white flowers making the villages look very special.

The day starts at 10am outside the Millbrook Village Hall with Maypole dancing, crowning of the Millbrook May King and Queen and prizes given

to the children for their flower baskets, boats and garlands. The procession leaves at 10.30 and arrives at the Millbrook car park at 11.40 where Town Crying, Maypole dancing, Morris dancing and children’s spring dancing takes place.

From 12 noon, there will be a fete alongside the Community Hall in Kingsand where there will be a number of stalls, and more singing and dancing. After arriving at Kingsand, the procession continues its journey for the afternoon festivities and makes its way around the villages. Finally, the boat is launched into the sea at Cawsand.

It has the makings of another fabulous day you won’t want to miss, so put it into your diaries now!

Millbrook Preschool were delighted to receive three tablets and software from the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club.

Millbrook Preschool is a registered charity that relies heavily on fundraising in order to meet the needs of the nursery.

In January, Vicki Richards, the preschool’s manager, approached her local Lions to see if they could help in the purchase of tablets to collect statutory information and photographs of the children’s development for their Learning Journey records.

“At the moment we collect the information and present it in the form of a scrapbook which contains photographs and developmental records.

“The cost in both time and money in providing these journals is a burden that the Preschool can ill-afford with the printer toner alone costing in excess of £30 a month. Coupled to this is the staff overtime incurred in maintaining these Learning Journeys as they cannot be worked upon during session

time when caring for the children takes priority,” explained Vicki Richards.

Information, images and video can now be uploaded via a tablet to their on-line Learning Journeys which can then be used to track the progress of children: this information can then be shared with their parents which is a more time efficient way to do this.

Torpint Lady Singers star at memorable concert in France Torpoint Lady Singers starred in a memorable concert in Benodet, Torpoint’s twin town in France.

Hosted by members of Benodet singing group, Gwen Aod, the Torpoint Lady Singers topped the bill at a concert to celebrate the opening of a new community facility, watched by an audience of 500 people.

Nineteen members of the choir, including musical director Sylvia Fraser and accompanist Sue Westwell, left Torpoint for two days of splendid events in Benodet and Dineault.

The ladies took with them 50 bunches of Cornish daffodils, one for each of their hosts. The group arrived at Roscoff on Friday morning, and it was 12 noon when they all arrived at their hotel in Benodet, to be met by a welcoming party of members of Gwen Aod. The rest of the day was free to settle in to the hotel and have a look around the beautiful town.

On Saturday lunchtime, the party was treated to a delicious crepe lunch in Benodet.

After lunch, the party proceeded to Dineault for an evening concert with Gwen Aod and another singing group. It was about 50 minutes drive by coach to the north of Benodet.

After the concert, refreshments for the three choirs were provided, after which the party were quite tired for the drive home. Losing an hour’s sleep didn’t help and it was 3am when they got to bed.

Most of Sunday was spent setting up and performing at the inaugural concert of the newly built Benodet Community Centre, a wonderful facility with many sports and public activities provided. Needless to say, the two choirs came together for a final rousing number.

Fundraiser event raises over £1500 for chemotherapy unit A fundraising event was held at Torpoint’s Standard Inn to raise money for Birch Ward Chemotherapy Unit at Derriford Hospital, in aid of the outstanding work of the doctors, nurses and staff.

The aim was to bring the Torpoint community together for a good cause, making it a family event, with Fred Tucker, playing his guitar and singing and magician Jack White giving up their time to entertain the adults and children.

Donna Osborn was the inspiration to hold the event following her treatment at Derriford Hospital.

She was first admitted in late November 2017 and after a two week stay and numerous intensive tests and scans, Donna was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer.

This took Donna, her family and close friends totally by shock.

A week later Donna started her chemotherapy in Birch Ward, Derriford. Donna’s journey throughout her treatment has been a roller coaster to say the least, with some positive moments but with also some very low times.

One of Donna’s close friends, Lisa Copp said: “Donna has always stayed positive throughout this whole process and has

overcome every hurdle that has been thrown at her.”

Late January Donna received some very good news, but to date she is still undergoing treatment at Derriford.

Special 90th birthday celebration for Irene

Millbrook resident Irene Ryder enjoying a surprise party for her 90th birthday at Millbrook Football Club.

Irene was born at Freathy Whitsands but moved to Millbrook when she was two years old.

She married a Torpoint lad Robert Ryder in 1950 and still lives in the same house they moved to after they got married. Irene was sadly widowed in 2009.

She has four children, eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Irene was joined by all her family, friends and neighbours to celebrate her birthday.

Recently I watched the fantastic short documentary film, ‘The Smog of the Sea’, co-produced by the musician and surfer Jack Johnson. In it, a bunch of scientists and artists investigate the epidemic of plastic pollution in our oceans. There is one line from the lead marine scientist Dr Marcus Eriksen that haunts me: ‘Plastic is the fossil of our time!.’

Plastic, a man-made material made originally from natural resources, is now set to define a century of human existence. We’ve had the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and, in 500–600 years’ time, we will be known as the Plastic Age! I’m not sure I particularly like that. It doesn’t sit comfortably with me as a Christian who has a love of God’s creation, especially this blue planet we call home, specifically the oceans which sustain the world in which we all live. We live in a time when so much discovery is happening, so much advancement in technology and medicine, but the mark of our advancement within the world is that which we physically leave behind for future generations. Every single piece of plastic you have ever used, every single-use plastic bottle, every piece of clingfilm, every plastic toy, is still in existence in some form or another. In the film, Jack Johnson reflectively poses the question: “Are we really meant to be using something which lasts for a second and then ends up in the sea or in a landfill?”

What, if anything, should our response be? I don’t believe in a God who has abandoned us to abuse his creation and who would applaud our throw-away culture. I believe that God has given us this earth to live in and care for, so how can we use plastic responsibly? I believe that God cares about the choices we make. The Bible calls us to be good stewards of God’s world, and with that comes the responsibility to pass on the world to

the next generation as we found it, or indeed, better than we found it. When God created the world, he proclaimed it ‘good’. And yet, humanity, over time, has caused it not to be good.

The fact is, far beyond land, in the middle of our largest oceans is an unseen epidemic of plastic pollution which is causing our oceans, and the life within them, to slowly die from the bottom of the food chains upwards. David Attenborough’s recent breathtaking television series Blue Planet II showed us how amazingly good life is under the waters of our oceans. It’s time that we, as humanity, stand up and take responsibility, to stop producing so much plastic waste. According to the online portal Statista, the average UK citizen produces 35kg of plastic waste each year. We need to advocate for increased conservation and seek to change the tide of that which is set to destroy all that God proclaimed ‘good’ to enable all life to flourish once again.

So the next time you are on one of our lovely local beaches, take a closer look at the sand you find yourself standing on. It will not all be natural, there will be plastic under your toes. Bend down, and perhaps in worship to God, collect those bottle tops, those small fragments of plastic, and ask God to bring healing to his creation. Plastic, a material used for our convenience, should not be found in our natural environments. Say no to single-use plastic, refrain from buying it.

Buy yourself a refillable water bottle and use it. Buy loose vegetables rather than plastic wrapped ones. Recycle wherever and whenever you can (currently only 9% of plastic is recycled worldwide) and intentionally minimise your plastic consumption. Together let’s reduce the impact of that plastic fossil which we are leaving behind as a scar upon our world and be better stewards of this world.

University’s vital research work is highlighted Torpoint WI

Rosemary Slee, President, welcomed everyone to the meeting. Rosemary reported on the passing of one of the group’s long-standing members, Ann Moore, and in her memory members sang Jerusalem.

Rosemary then introduced guest speaker Rachel Brown from Plymouth University, who had kindly agreed to step in at short notice. Rachel spoke about the vital work being carried out in the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. Members were all amazed to learn of the research carried out at this Centre of Excellence, into such devastating illnesses as brain tumours, Huntington’s disease and Parkinsons. Thanks to generous fundraising the official opening of the Laboratories will be in May. Members were very grateful to Rachel for enlightening them all about this research, of which many were unaware, that it is being carried out in Plymouth.

After a break for tea, the usual meeting business was discussed. It was agreed to make donations towards the cost of the Marquee at the Royal Cornwall Show and to Denman College. Sue Hale highlighted some possible forthcoming visits and outings including Devonport Theatre to see ‘The Full Monty’ in May, visits to the Arts and Crafts project in Polperro, Lanhydrock and to the new Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. A guided tour of the caves at Whitsand Bay Holiday Park is also a possibility.

The annual meeting in February was cancelled due to the bad weather so the Byelaws were read out by Rosemary. Rosemary will carry on as President, with the assistance of two Committee Members, and was pleased to welcome two new members to the Committee, Kathy Crago and Phyllis Powles. Due to a pending house move Sylvia White, who has always provided an excellent variety of speakers every month, has resigned from the Committee and was presented with a beautiful plant for her new garden. Sandra Hocking gave the financial report, Barbara Brimacombe the annual report for 2017 and Rosemary gave the President’s address in which she thanked the Committee members for all their hard work in their various roles.

The annual competition results were 1st - Kath Olufsen who received the lovely paperweight, 2nd Barbara Brimacombe and 3rd Jean Morgan. The Flower of the Month 1st - Jacqui Rust who received the trophy, 2nd Betty Tarrant and 3rd Enid Gaved.

Wilcove WI

Members of Wilcove WI have enjoyed a variety of visits and speakers during the past few months.

Members enjoyed a delicious 68th birthday lunch in March at the Plymouth City College training restaurant, PL1, preceded by a surprisingly enjoyable and very informative visit to the Energy from Waste Facility in Devonport. The group was warmly greeted by Jane Ford who looked after them for the entire visit and even provided coffee and cakes – especially for the group’s birthday. She gave an excellent illustrated talk about the ethos and management of the facility. The site takes unrecyclable waste from Plymouth and parts of Devon and burns it in an incinerator to generate both electricity and steam, used to heat the dockyard.

Members watched as (very smelly) waste was dumped, turned over, mechanically grabbed and deposited in the furnace and even went into the furnace building to view the burning process through thick windows. The whole visit was a real education and the group was impressed by the way that councils have managed to reduce waste and emissions.

Several members enjoyed a flower arranging workshop in Wadebridge while others attended a very informative day of talks about Cornish art in Withiel, both organised by the Cornwall Federation of WIs. The annual meeting in March included reports on the past successful year and the election of the committee for the next year.

The speaker for the April meeting was David Morton, who gave an excellent overview of the very valuable work of Citizens Advice plus some information, surprising for some, about the electricity consumption of various domestic appliances.

The next meeting will take place at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 15 May in Cove Hall, Wilcove and will focus on a discussion of the proposed resolution about mental health awareness which will go forward to the WI National Annual Meeting in Cardiff in June. Visitors can be assured of a warm welcome.
