An Ofsted inspection has rated Torpoint Community College as ‘Good’ and highlighted that pupils are ambitious to succeed.

The inspectors praised teachers, leaders, support staff and governors pointing out their dedication and determination to support students in achieving high standards.

Inspectors recognised that staff know students well and provide a high standard of care and support, and praised the safety, welfare and all-round development of students acknowledging how this attention to detail prepares the students well for the next steps in their lives.

The inspection team recognised that there is a very positive learning environment at the college and students

throughout the school, including the Sixth Form, make good progress.

They also found that at all times, including during break times, lunch times and lesson changeovers, students’ behaviour was excellent as was their attendance at college.

Inspectors found that students were proud of the college and have confidence in their teachers.

Students in the Sixth Form at the college spoke highly of the quality of teaching and support they received from their teachers and inspectors commented that the Sixth Form remains the natural choice for most Year 11 students.

The inspection team recognised that students were ambitious to succeed and worked well with each other. Praise, in particular, was given to the assessment

A man from South East Cornwall has put the miles in on the coastal paths of the Rame Peninsula training for the London Marathon.

Ben Crane, the owner of Cliff Top Cafe at Whitsand Bay, was among the thousands of people who took part in the event on Sunday April 23.

Making his debut at this distance Ben is running to raise money in aid of the prostrate cancer charity in memory of two of his regular customers who died from the illness.

A few days before the event, the

44-year-old said: “I started training last November and I’m now up to 20 miles.

I’m hoping for a time of about four and half hours, but we’ll just see how things pan out on the day.

“It’s a great cause and my main aim is to raise as much money as I can for the charity.”

Ben, a former soldier, served in the British army for 16 years.

Young people have helped deliver the Neighbourhood Plan information leaflets Thursday May 4 isn’t just Cornwall Council elections on the Rame Peninsula - it’s also Referendum Day. The area’s Neighbourhood Plan is going to a vote that day, seeking formal approval by residents for the specific planning rules that will affect the area for the next 20 years. The vital publicity for the referendum is being led by the Young Adults on the Rame Peninsula group, pictured above outside Millbrook’s Rame Centre - hosting window display on the topic - with the Plan coordinator, Cllr George Trubody.

The Plan covers the five rural parishes of Antony, Maker-with-Rame, Millbrook, Sheviock and St John. It provides a set of strict guidelines on new developments , written by local representatives from the parish councils and discussed at community consultation events over the last three years.

Councillor Trubody says that the importance of the Plan can’t be overstated: “This is the first time that local residents have ever been consulted directly about the rules that affect their area. We’ve been working on this for some years, and we believe we’ve finally got it right. We urge everyone to come out and vote on this major local question.”

No more second homes

One key policy is bound to cause ripples. The Rame plan has the same rule that was fought over in the St Ives Neighbourhood Plan - a ban on new developments aimed at the second homes market.

The policy imposes a condition that any new build in the area has to be for “primary residence” only.

George Trubody explains why this is so important: “Our area has one of the highest proportions of second homes in all of Cornwall, creating difficulties for keeping our living communities going. We think it’s vital to include this policy, which will help us retain the strength and vibrancy of our area. Existing second homes and holiday lets aren’t affected at all, it’s purely about stopping any more non-residence houses being built.”

The St Ives proposal led to a legal challenge that

was eventually defeated, paving the way for other areas to adopt the same level of safeguards.

Getting the Youth Vote out

A group of young people based in Millbrook have been instrumental in getting the publicity out about the Plan and its importance. They have agreed to also use their social media networks to spread the word and encourage young people, so often missing from local democracy, to take part.

Their spokesman, 20 year old Phoebe Gale, said: “This Plan gives us, the next generation, some hope that there might be houses we can afford when we are ready to buy and start families here. Unless something is done, we know that those of us who grew up here won’t be able to stay.

“We’re trying to get young people to take the time to vote, and to support the Neighbourhood Plan - it really matters.”

Information to every household

The information leaflet and follow-up reminders have gone to every household in the five parishes affected. The work has been coordinated by The Peninsula Trust in Millbrook, from their base at the Rame Centre.

Manager Simon Ryan said :“We’re really pleased to have helped the Neighbourhood Plan group with this final effort. They have worked really hard for five years to include the ideas and priorities that local people wanted, so it’s great to see all that time and energy finally coming to fruition with the Referendum.

“Our job has been to inform the residents, through the door-to-door leafletting, our e-mail bulletins and posters, and the information available at the Rame Centre. We hope everyone knows how important the Plan is, and that people will make the effort to get down to the polling stations and vote.”

So now it’s down to the community. Will people turn out and make their wishes known? The decisive moment is this week, with the all-important Referendum on Thursday May 4.

Hen power at Porte Rouge!

Smiles all round from residents at Porte Rouge

Everyone at Porte Rouge has become very ‘eggcited’ about the arrival of our chicken eggs as part of our Spring Project.

Our residents and staff met with the area manager, Nick Meagor from ‘Incredible Eggs’ South West who provided us with nine fertilised chick eggs in an incubator. The incubator provided everyone with ‘eggcellent’ egg visibility, and the brooding cage was all set up for us in readiness for the hatched chicks.

All of our residents have actively watched over the eggs in the incubator to look for any signs of cracking and we were advised that not all of the eggs may hatch out. On day two a resident ‘eggcitedly’ informed us that two eggs had developed large cracks and there was visible signs of movement within these eggs.

Slowly the cracked eggs opened and within two hours a yellow chick and a black chick were hatched.

Once they were dried out in the incubator and their feathers became fluffy the chicks were placed in the brooding cage where there is a heater to maintain their temperature. Much to the enjoyment of everyone it did not take long for the chicks to grow in confidence and to begin chirping and walking around their cage.

As the days went on a further egg showed signs of cracking and we were presented with another baby chick on the fourth day. However, our residents immediately recognised that this chick was not as strong or active as the other two and looked very poorly.

A constant vigil was held by our residents who ‘willed’ the little chick to survive, and hand rearing and drying out with a flannel was undertaken but it was not to be and sadly our ‘little sick note’ as it was called, passed away the following day. A fitting funeral service was held by some of our residents and staff and the baby chick was buried in our ‘Remembrance Garden’.

This whole event has evoked really fond memories for many of our residents who have lived on farms and been involved in animal husbandry when they were children and some of our residents were farmers’ wives who were actively involved in running their own farms.

Thanks to the residents, their families and friends and several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren who have come for cuddles with the baby chicks and it has been great to see such a hands-on project boost the resident’s quality of life in such a way.

‘Hen-power’ has come to Porte Rouge and has been embraced by all of our ‘hensioners’ and that is no yolk!! We will all be very sad to see them return to the farm at the weekend.

Blooming daffodils!

Last month the Torpoint and Peninsula Lions, along with family and friends, and students from Torpoint Community College, spent their time picking and selling daffodils to raise funds for local causes.

In the two weekends leading up to Mothering Sunday, the selling of daffodils raised over £800!

The money raised was the result of selling over 550 bunches of daffodils or around 8,250 picked daffodils! Around 95% of the money raised from the daffodils, go to local good causes within the Rame Peninsula and the remaining 5% go to national and international good causes.

Due to Mothering Sunday occurring later this year, the daffodils growing in the field had mostly flowered. As a result, West Antony Farm kindly donated several crates of handpicked and bunched daffodils, which they would usually sell commercially, to the Torpoint Lions for charity purposes. In particular, a big thank you goes to Chris who organises and inspires the students to take part every year. Lion Helen Willoughby remarked, ‘It is impressive to see such dedication from young students who give up their free time willingly … to help the local community’.

This year daffodils were sold at Kernow Mill and Windy Ridge Café at Truelefoot, and also at the Cremyll Ferry. ‘We would like to give our thanks to these venues for allowing us to sell our daffodils on their premises and for the generous cups of tea and plate of biscuits offered by the Windy Ridge to cold daffodil sellers!’ adds Lion Helen Willoughby.

‘We would also like to thank the Finnygook Inn and Edgcumbe Arms for their generous support during the Mothering Sunday weekend’.

Local Lion volunteers in Millbrook

Chris Mackie is the latest member to join the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions.

Ex member of the Torpoint St John Ambulance Brigade for over 20 years, Chris started his career as a registered Pharmacy Technician at Williams Chemist in Torpoint.

Asked why he had decided to join the Lions, he replied: “My wife suggested joining the Lions as she thought that it would be a suitable way in helping the community. I thought the badging ceremony was meaningful, and gave me a sense of belonging to an international organisation, amongst friends’. I I f you are interested in making friends and becoming a member, and have a couple of hours to spare each month, contact Membership Co-ordinator Clive O’Shaughnessy on 01752 823635.

The VETs and Lions spring into action in Millbrook!

Several Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions joined up with members from the Village Enhancement Team to give Millbrook a bit of a spring clean.

Volunteers strolled around the lake and surrounding areas on a litter picking mission.

Surprisingly, only a small amount of litter was picked up. It turns out that Millbrook residents are particularly careful as to where they place their litter.

Lion Gail Kelleher said, ‘I was amazed by the small amount of litter found. I was sure that it was going to be a much bigger job. It’s good to see how the local community are looking after their village.’

Volunteers also cleared the car park outside the Community Hall of weeds and ivy; shrubs and trees were pruned and tidied; and flower beds were given a ‘Ground Force’ treatment.

Formed three years ago in response to the flooding in Millbrook, the VETs can be seen regularly in Millbrook tending to the six flower boats and fixed planters, as well as litter picking and silt clearing.

All set for spectacular Black Prince Flower Boat Procession on May 1

Rame Gig crews enjoy triple success at Dartmouth Regatta When you see a gig crew with their paddles up (see photo above), it can only mean one thing – they have just won their race.

This happened three times for Rame Gig Club at Dartmouth Regatta. The club’s Under 14s, Under 16s and Men’s C crews did just that. They did themselves and the club proud.

A special well done to both C crews. The men had one adult rower and the ladies had two in their gigs, the rest of the crews were once again Under 16s.

Their first (men) and third (ladies) places were no mean feat as for the first time they had to row the full adult course. This was the first regatta, of the season, where all age groups have competed. The youngsters have certainly set the benchmark for everyone.

Some of the Under 14s looked like little dots out on the water. What they lacked in stature they definitely made up for in sheer determination. They fought to the finish with other gigs right beside them.

The Under 16s totally dominated their race with plenty of water between them and the competition. They won by a Cornish mile! The club’s Men’s SuperVet crew added to the day’s brilliant results, coming second in their race. A great start to Rame Gig Club’s rowing season.

CHARITY CHALLENGE The final amount raised by the ‘NOR ROCKERS’ for Cancer Research UK was an amazing £1,087. Once again a huge thank you to all concerned.

As the Advertiser went to press, final preparations for the Black Prince Flower Boat Procession on May 1 were taking place.

It’s always a great day out on the Rame Peninsula as the Black Prince Flower Boat winds its way through the villages of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand to bid farewell to winter, welcome spring and summer and ask for a good harvest from the land and sea.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s the festival evolved into a chance for the local apprentice boys to display their lovingly made boat, carrying it shoulder high bedecked with flowers and to earn some beer money by dancing. Sadly this festival died out between the wars as so many of our apprentice boys did not return from war.

Revived in 1986, and now with more music, colour and dancing than ever before but staying true to its roots, on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May, the villages of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand are transformed. Princess Royal takes salute at HMS Raleigh passing-out parade Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal visited HMS Raleigh to take the salute at the passing-outparade.

The Princess was the guest of honour at the parade, which marked the successful completion of Initial Naval Training for 44 recruits, who now move on to their professional training to become engineers, warfare specialists, medics and communication and information specialists.

After inspecting the guard, the Princess was invited to address the 500-strong parade, which also included members of HMS Raleigh’s Ship’s Company and recruits at various stages of their training.

In her address Her Royal Highness commended the recruits on their turnout and congratulated them on their high standards.

Shakin’ Stevens releases ‘Down in Torpoint Neighbourhood Watch Office the Hole’ video depicting horrific copper mine working conditions As Shakin’ Stevens prepares to embark on his biggest UK tour to date – 33 shows, including Plymouth Pavilions on May 11 - he has released a video for ‘Down In The Hole’.

The third single from his acclaimed album Echoes Of Our Times, ‘Down In The Hole’, has been illustrated with a music video exhibiting a rare selection of photos taken in the Cornish copper mines as described by Shaky in the song’s lyrics.

Featured in the video is the underground photography of John Charles Burrow. In the 1890s, photographer Burrow captured on film, for the very first time, what it was truly like within the depths of a Cornish mine.

Even the miners themselves had never seen the mines with such clarity, and for some, it was too frightening.

Tales are still told to this day by exminers of the many men who - after seeing this realistic portrayal of the place they had worked in, in total darkness - refused to set foot in the mines ever again.

Today, these images serve as a haunting reminder of the harsh and dangerous conditions that took the lives of so many young Cornish men, but also as a testament to their strength, determination and ingenuity.

To see these remarkable images, visit the online archive or the Royal Cornwall Museum. Shaky’s paternal forebears originated from Cornwall where men, women and children worked -and died-in the deep and dangerous vertical copper mines of Gwennap.

The Cornish led the world in mining technology, and when the mines started closing in the 1870s Shaky’s surviving ancestors travelled overseas in search of work. Many stayed in their adopted countries, never to return home.

The video was inspired by research Shaky made into his mysterious family history. Combining tales of wartime heroics, salvationists and strife with a bold mix of musical influences from blues, folk and Americana as well as his trademark rocking style, Shaky created what critics, including Paul Sexton, declared “the most surprising album” of the year.

Echoes Of Our Times entered the Official Album Charts at number 22, reached No 2 in the Americana chart, No. 4 in the Indie chart and still sits in the Americana official album charts top 40.

Co-op boost for Scouts Torpoint Co-op has presented a cheque for more than £1700 to Torpoint Scouts – and the money will go towards a week-long camp in the summer.

Representatives from Torpoint Scout Group, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers will be attending this year’s Kernow Jamboree from Saturday July 29 for a week at the Pencarrow Estate in Cornwall.

The Scouts and Explorers are staying for the week and the Beavers and Cubs will join the group on the Wednesday.

Emphasising the positives rather than the negatives The real problem is not the problem of evil but the problem of good.

I sometimes hear people rejecting the possibility of faith by referring to the terrible things that happen in this world, and we all know there are plenty of those.

If God is good, they say, why do so many bad things happen in the world?

I understand why they think that, but I think they miss the point. The real problem is not the problem of evil, but the problem of good.

Not the problem of cruelty and selfishness but the problem of kindness and generosity; not the problem of ugliness but the problem of beauty.

If the world is just a physical collection of atoms and cells working together, with no meaning behind them apart from the survival of the fittest, then evil is no problem because it does not exist.

In fact selfishness would be the default natural position for life. In such a world we would expect to be knocked about a bit. But how then does it

come about that we thrill with pleasure to hear a blackbird sing, that we are moved to tears of joy when we see selfless love in action, and tears of compassion when we see or hear of some tragedy that has affected someone who we may never have met or expect to see.

Over £73 million was raised during the recent Red Nose Day and £350,000 given by ordinary folk for the family of PC Keith Palmer who was killed in the terrorist attack.

Why do we rage at the injustice on innocent victims, give generously and anonymously to good causes, and even occasionally, and with difficulty, forgive our enemies?

No, it is light that is the problem not darkness; understanding and compassion not indifference; it is love not callousness.

The thing we have to explain in the world is the positive not the negative. The first followers of Jesus talked about following the Way and, by doing just that, they changed the world.

Crafting and health Wilcove WI ladies hosted a spring craft social ‘sewcial’ - to which they invited members from WI’s located both on the peninsula and in nearby Saltash and Menheniot.

During the afternoon everyone enjoyed home-made Easter ‘makes, bakes and cakes’ and were given the opportunity to take part in 2 of the 4 craft activities on offer making needle felted bee brooches, handmade paper concertina books, a pieced/sewn fabric container or knitted decorative hearts.

The focus changed for Wilcove WI members during their April meeting, when physiotherapist Isla Sell gave an informative yet entertaining and humorous talk about the importance of a strong pelvic floor for

health. She tackled what can be difficult subjects with ease, and the help of balloons as visual aids, and everyone learnt something to benefit their future health.

The next meeting for Wilcove WI will include a talk by Katrina Hamilton-Meikle entitled ‘The icing on the cake’. There will also be a discussion about the two resolutions going forward to the national WI Annual General Meeting in June – concerning pollution of the sea by plastics and the alleviation of loneliness.

The meeting will take place at Cove Hall, Wilcove on Tuesday May 16, starting at 7.30pm. Potential new members will be very welcome to attend.
