Community invited to invest in new enterprise

Exciting plans for Cawsand’s Old Ship Inn One of Cawsand’s oldest pubs could be rising from the ashes - literally.

The Old Ship Inn stood empty for many years, before it was destroyed by fire in 2013, leaving an empty ruin.

Now the Peninsula Trust have bold plans to bring the derelict eyesore back to life.

They want to restore the Grade 2 listed building and turn it into an important community asset.

The Peninsula Trust has over 600 local members and it aims to raise the cash needed for the project by offering local residents the chance to buy shares in the new enterprise.

The Community Share Offer, which opens on March 15 will allow private individuals to invest in The Old Ship as part-owners, with a modest dividend once the enterprise is trading profitably.

There will be a meeting to discuss the share offer at the Kingsand Institute at 7pm on March 15.

Designer Helen Round launches new studio and shop at Mount Edgcumbe

Millbrook designer Helen Round is opening a brand new shop and studio at The Barrow Centre, Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

The contemporary homeware shop is opening on Saturday March 3 at 11am and will feature the full collection of hand printed linen products.

As well as showcasing her designs, distinctly influenced by the landscape and fauna of Cornwall, the new venture will also continue to create local employment and offer apprenticeships to those wishing to develop careers within the craft and textiles industry.

This will be the first opportunity for UK customers to view the whole collection in one place and visitors are invited to attend the launch day between 11am and 5pm, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11am by Mount Edgcumbe manager, Chris Burton.

On the big day, visitors will be welcomed with a glass of bubbly and will have the opportunity to see some of the team at work in the studio, which will also host regular craft workshops throughout the year.

Helen said: “I am delighted to be embarking on this exciting new venture in the beautiful grounds of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

Bold plans for The Old Ship Inn

Future of Millbrook Surgery is secured

Residents are celebrating after the NHS confirmed that agreement has been reached to secure the future of Millbrook Surgery.

An NHS statement announced: “We are pleased to say that agreement has been reached to secure the future of Millbrook Surgery.

“The owner has agreed to sell the building to a property company that specialises in providing GP premises. Under current policy this is the only means of securing the surgery for the use of NHS services in the long term.

“The arrangement means Millbrook will be leased back so Rame Group Practice can continue to provide care. The cost to the NHS is in line with the expectations of the district valuer, who helps safeguard taxpayer interests.

“If the sale cannot be finalised by April 1, then the current licence will be extended to make sure the doors stay open for patients.”

Dr Lawrence Barnes, partner at Rame Group Practice, said: “We’re really pleased that a deal’s been struck on the surgery, because that means we can carry on providing care without any disruption. That makes life simpler for everyone.”

Simon added: “Communities that come together can achieve amazing results. By raising the cash needed to buy and rebuild the Old Ship, the whole community can become actively involved in creating a major new community asset.”

Torpoint teenager joins the Royal Navy Torpoint teenager Joe Rice was among the latest group of Royal Navy recruits to complete training at HMS Raleigh in February.

Joe, who is aiming to become an engineering technician, was among 46 recruits who took part in the passing-out-parade watched by families and friends.

Inspired by Torpoint’s close links with the Royal Navy, Joe left his home to move into the training base last November. The 18-year-old said: “Living really local to HMS Raleigh, the Navy’s always been something that I’ve been aware of, seeing the recruits come and go.

“The Navy has always intrigued me so I decided at 16 I wanted to join and came in after my A Levels.

There’s also the opportunity to travel and the qualifications I’ll get for being an engineer, which will be good for me after I leave the Service.

“It’s been hard, knowing that my house is literally just there outside the gate, but it’s also been nice because I’ve been home to see my family both times we had shore leave ” With HMS Raleigh providing employment for a high number of the local community, there have been a number of familiar faces for Joe. He said: My first meal on my first night was served to me by my best friend who works here. That was really weird. It feels like I’ve left home, but then it feels like I haven’t because there’s been familiar faces everywhere.”

After completing the first stage of his training, Joe is ready to head to HMS Sultan near Portsmouth, to learn the skills to become an engineer specialising in marine engineering.

He said: “I’m looking forward to going to Portsmouth to see how I react being away from home. Training at Raleigh has been hard, but it’s gone really quickly and I’ve also enjoyed it. I’ve met some of the best people here, who will be mates for life.

“The worst thing is coming back from exercise, you’re dirty and cold and there’s all your kit to wash and turn around. You just get through it and do it all together as a team. I barely put the washing machine on at home. I didn’t even know I could iron, but I’m quite good at it now.”

Torcare’s new wellbeing coordinator, Kathy has been settling in well.

After just three months in the role, the residents of the Nursing Home recognise her and are happy to see her and spend time with her enhancing the care provided by the Torcare team as well as being involved in the many activities she arranges.

This month they have been decorating heart shaped biscuits for Valentine’s Day, enjoying the organised entertainment which is regularly invited into all three of our homes such as ‘Sunny Side Up’ pictured here where the residents particularly enjoyed joining in with them at Porte Rouge and the Nursing Home.

The staff at Torcare are all encouraged to draw on their talents – however big or small. Whether it’s one-to-one reading, jigsaw making or card playing, all of which are just as important as the group activities. Examples are armchair aerobics, painting, singing, karaoke, knitting, bingo, and other such games… It all adds up to fun afternoons especially during these cold and wet days.

The Old Vicarage, Antony is busily having the grounds, garden, car park and patio area overhauled in readiness for the nice weather. The families and friends of our residents will be able to more easily park and enjoy the new entrance and outside seating area, appreciating the lovely views from the garden out over the countryside across Plymouth to Dartmoor.

Homeowners in Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula face an increase of nearly five per cent in council tax from April.

Cornwall Council has confirmed a council tax rise of 4.99% for 2018/19 which will help protect services for vulnerable children, adults and families, provide more homes, support jobs and economic growth.

The increase will see a general council tax increase of 2.99% - a rise of 63p per week for a Band B property - plus a 2% increase which will be spent solely on adult social care. This is in line with the Government’s policy of asking local taxpayers to help fund social care demands. It represents an increase of £1.04p per week for Band B. Alongside this the council will further streamline operations to make savings of £77m over the next four years.

Cornwall Council is calling on central government to change their funding model to provide fairer funding for Cornwall as the current funding model doesn’t match Cornwall’s funding needs. Its campaign is calling for a model which allocates money in a fair way, based on need and based on factors that drive demand for local services, such as the number of older people and the higher cost of delivering services in rural areas.

This new funding model would also narrow the gap between the highest and lowest funded councils. For example Camden receives around £1100 per resident in funding from government, compared to £784 per resident in Cornwall.

This model would even out that amount. In total Cornwall would receive an additional £39 million a year.

The shabby chic venue opened at the beginning of February and represents another big step forward for the business.

Kardkadia opened in 2010 when Jan Brown took over the previous card shop and transformed it into a more inclusive events service with the introduction of balloons and a very popular candy kart hire.

Now Karkadia has introduced its own tea room, serving a selection of teas, coffees, cakes and light bites. The

afternoon cream teas are already proving a winner with local residents.

The menu also includes soups, sandwiches, toasties, paninis and cakes.

Jan Brown said: “I wanted to diversify and offer local residents something different, so came up with the idea

of a shabby chich-style team room.

“We have room for 25 customers and also have a coffee bar where we can offer our locally sourced Cornico coffee.”

Charity music festival at Downderry in March A one day music fest is being held in South East Cornwall in March to raise funds for Save the Children.

The event is being put together by Roland Monger, who is organising a free day of music in aid of charity at The Inn on the Shore and Village Hall in Downderry on March 24.

Roland, who writes a regular music blog called Listen with Monger, set up a one day music festival at The Inn on the Shore his local pub.

Roland said: “ì imaginatively called it One Day Fest. The idea was to get a bunch of musicians together to play all day for the entertainment of people and hope that their mood was suitably raised to donate some money to charity. This worked so well that we raised over £2,500 for St Luke’s Hospice, a charity close to my heart after being treated there following a cancer scare in 2016.”

Following the success of the first One Day Fest, Roland is organising One Day Fest: 2 - and it promises to be bigger and better than the inuagural 2017 festival.

“We’re having two stages, more bands and this time we’re doing it all for Save the Children,” added Roland. The event starts at 1pm and continues until late in the day. It’s open to all ages and entry is free. Donations to Save the Children will be welcome on the day.

Bands involved are; Dr Thud’s Remedy, The Viewers, San Blas, Paul Armer, Deviock Community Music Group, LGM One, Mark Cornwall, Gozer Goodspeed, Nick Gladdish, Charlie Harris, Dew Barf, Roz Birch, Eilidh Sinclair and a surprise guest.

Looking in good shape for the new season...

With Spring just around the corner, the new gig training season is well under way at Rame. The first competition the club will enter is on Saturday March 10, when The Three Rivers Race takes place on a five mile figure of eight course at Caradon.

Following this opening event on Saturday March 31 the club will travel to Dartmouth to take part in the Dart Regatta. Look out for next month’s issue to see how the club fared.

The gigs and paddles have had their winter maintenance completed. This as usual was a mammoth task, taken on by many rowing members.

Like his father before him, Jack Baker has done an amazing job on the Minnadhu painstakingly stripping 15 kilos of paint from her (yes they did weigh it).

Then came the repairs before varnishing and repainting her in the Rame club colours.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in the maintenance but especially Jack who gave much of his spare time to this task.

Diary Dates The club’s annual meeting will be held on Friday April 13 at 7pm in the Fitness Suite. Everyone welcome.

The club will be holding a coffee morning at The Institute on Saturday April 21 from 10am to 12 noon.

Membership to join the club is £100. This includes unlimited access to the fitness suite.

Antony’s volunteer appeal The National Trust team at Antony are opening the doors to potential volunteers on Tuesday March 6.

This open day is for anyone looking for a new challenge as the charity look to recruit volunteers for a host of different roles, including room guiding, gardening, fundraising and conservation.

Antony, the historic house and garden is looked after by the National Trust and home to the Carew Pole family for over six hundred years. Now they are inviting anyone and everyone to find out more about the fantastic work volunteers do to contribute to the conservation and presentation of Antony.

The house completed in 1720, with gardens designed by Humphry Repton, sits high above the estuary of the River Lynher, with stunning views over the water. Still lived in by the Carew Pole family today, it is known affectionately as ‘a home with a heartbeat.’

The National Trust is looking for volunteers to help support and look after this hidden gem. To expand the friendly and dedicated team who from April to October each year, extend a smile and warm welcome to visitors of all ages, travelling from near and far.

There will be opportunities to meet the team at the Antony Volunteer Open Day, from 10am to 4pm. Volunteers don’t need to be a National Trust

member to attend the event and you can drop in any time during the day.

There will be a chance to find out about a host of volunteer opportunities including garden work, admin, room guiding, event help, raffle ticket selling and more.

Tours of the house and garden will be running regularly throughout the day giving everyone a chance to glimpse the surroundings that as a volunteer you’d be helping to look after for future generations. There will be a chance to chat with existing volunteers at Antony and find out about the world of volunteering first-hand.

Volunteer Rachel Cooper says, “Why did I wait so long to do this?

I’m involved with a brilliant team of people and I learn something new and interesting everyday I’m there. I get to meet and talk to people from all walks of life, help them enjoy their visit, and in a setting that is something else.”

Volunteering at Antony has many advantages, like making new friends, sharing skills and experiences, and work experience.

President Andy Brown of the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club has presented multi activity agility equipment to the YMCA at Torpoint.

The local Lions were happy to respond to an appeal by Katie Singleton, YMCA’s team supervisor and fitness instructor.

The five-piece combination multi activity agility apparatus consists of two steel agility tables, a timber slide boom and two other timber beams.

The equipment is used to promote co-ordination, balance, strength and agility.

“We hope to add to the equipment in the future, making it even more challenging,” said Katie.

The children, aged from four to seven years, enjoying the equipment above, attend the afterschool session on Thursdays at the Torpoint and Rame Community Sports Centre.

The session enables the children to enjoy learning basic trampolining moves, agility games and circuit style activities. The children learn to work independently as well as in a team thus promoting social confidence, team work ability and fitness levels.

“We hope to offer children the opportunity to try new activities and set them on the right path to a healthier and more active lifestyle,” Katie said.

“Many thanks again from all of us at the Torpoint

and Rame Community Sports Centre. Your support (the Lions) has been so welcomed and the children are so excited to use the new equipment.”

The Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions will be picking and selling daffodils to the public again this month. Daffodils will be on sale at Kernow Mills, Truelefoot, during the weekends of the March 3 and 4; and March 10 and 11 between 11am and 3.30pm.

Flowers are also available at the Cremyll Ferry, manpower permitting.

Please remember that the daffodils are donated from local farms and volunteers from the local community, and their families, pick and sell the flowers to raise money to meet the needs of local causes in the community.

The volunteers work both enthusiastically and tirelessly regardless of the weather conditions so please come down and support your local charity.

Don’t forget that Mother’s Day falls on Sunday March 11. So why not make mum happy and help your local community at the same time. Ideal!

We are looking for people in the local community who have just a spare couple of hours each month to help raise funds to help worthwhile causes in the local community.

You can participate in as little or as much as you choose to. You might want to contribute some ideas, or perhaps shake a bucket, maybe you want to try your hand at running an event or take on more responsibility in a particular area.

Whatever you are interested in doing, why don’t you pop along to one of our meetings and just take a look at what it is all about. It is a great place to make friends whilst lending a helping hand and also, if you want to, take part in our social evenings. You will be made to feel

Falklands hero laid to rest The funeral service for the late Surgeon Captain (Surg Capt) Rick Jolly OBE, who ran the Field Hospital during the Falklands conflict, took place at HMS Raleigh on February 10.

Around 550 mourners attended the service conducted by the Reverend Ralph Barber, Royal Navy Chaplain, and the Reverend David Cooper, who was the Chaplain to 2 PARA during the Falklands conflict and is the Chaplain to the South Atlantic Medal Association.

The mourners included Surg Capt Jolly’s wife, Susie, other family members, neighbours and friends together with former colleagues that he served with throughout his Service career and during the Falklands conflict. The eulogy was given by Surg Capt Jolly’s longstanding friend Dr Richard Page, who trained with him at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

Rick had an engaging personality, was larger than life, generous and good spirited, and was well known for those particular aspects of his character. It is clear from the many hundreds of messages Susie has had how far that was extended to others.”

Ken Enticknap was one of two men plucked from Falkland Sound by Surg Capt Jolly after the sinking of HMS Ardent. He and John Dillon had struggled their way through the smoke, fire and razor sharp twisted metal after the air-raid on the ship and were drifting in the freezing water.

Major General Julian Thompson, who commanded 3 Commando Brigade in 1982, represented His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Major General Thompson said: “Surgeon Captain Rick Jolly was in charge of the field hospital at Ajax Bay during the Falklands War of 1982. Here, in the ‘Red and Green Life Machine’, Rick Jolly and his staff treated more than 650 British and Argentine casualties, and carried out some 210 operations. Awarded the OBE

by Britain, he was the only person to be decorated by Argentina as well for his care of many wounded Argentines. Rick, an outstanding commando doctor, was a large, compassionate, ebullient man, a gifted mimic and raconteur. We will miss him very much.”

Admiral Sir James Perowne was the representative for His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, while Surgeon Vice Admiral Alasdair Walker represented His Royal Highness The Duke of York and the First Sea Lord.

Surg Vice Admiral Walker said: “I first met Rick when I was the Medical Officer in HMS Plymouth during the Falklands conflict. The ship was damaged by several bombs and our wounded were evacuated to the field hospital at Ajax Bay. They like many others benefitted from Rick’s acute intervention. Our paths crossed several times in subsequent years as

“Rick continued to encourage and support young servicemen and women after leaving the Royal Navy and was also an advocate for veterans of the Falklands conflict. Regular visits to the Islands were established and continued thanks to his involvement. Those who knew him within the Royal Naval Medical Service will miss his support. More importantly his patients will miss him terribly.

On behalf of the Royal Navy I would like to pass on our condolences to Susie and the rest of Rick’s family.”

The mourners also included former members of the Medical Squadron of the Commando Logistic Regiment Royal Marines; the squadron that Surg Capt Jolly headed up during the Falklands conflict. Nine of these men acted as pallbearers.

The squadron provided the vast majority of the medical support to UK land based Royal Marines and Army Battalions as well as those ships in Falkland Sound and San Carlos Water, from a disused refrigeration plant at Ajax Bay. He will be remembered, indeed, for all the things he did, from surgery on the streets of Northern Island, to the Ajax Bay field hospital and for bringing Jack Speak to the bookshops, I have a signed copy of course. He will always be in the forefront of my memory as the man who, having very little regard for his own safety did something amazing to allow me to live. He will be sadly missed.”

In times of uncertainty As we look at the political situation with Theresa May and the minority government, Brexit and what it will mean to us we realise we are certainly living in uncertain times.

If we look across the Atlantic things aren’t much better with Donald Trump and the concerns over world peace. Again more uncertainty.

Uncertainty in turn can lead to anxiety which then robs us of so much that is good in life.

How can we cope in these difficult times?

The song ‘One day at a time’ gives us some helpful advice. Much of what we worry about never actually happens. Taking a small chunk of time and getting through that can be a massive help.

I recently heard a footballer say when his team was up against it in a match. ‘We just concentrate on getting through the next five minutes.’ Much easier than focusing on the whole game.

I wonder how Jesus coped? It’s quite clear from the Bible that he knew what kind of death he would face and yet he was able to focus on

the now – the person in front of him whether it be Zacchaeus the cheating tax collector or Bartimaeus the blind beggar – he was able to help them just a few days before his final week in Jerusalem.

Jesus said don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear... your heavenly Father knows that you need them. Look for Him, listen for Him, he can help in our time of need.

History tells us that there have been many uncertain times. I am reminded of how King George VI handled the horrors of Dunkirk and the second world war by calling the nation to pray.

Whatever your belief. Whatever your past everyone is invited to ask Jesus for help whatever you are facing today. God through his son Jesus wants to help you through. Here is a prayer which you can pray : Dear Lord Jesus please help me with the situation I am facing, take away my anxiety and give me your peace Amen

Memorable year for Singers The Torpoint Lady Singers held their annual meeting on February 5 at Cornerstone Church, Torpoint.

Chair Chris Trethewey, shared the fond memories of choir member Betty Duncan, who had passed away, also Marjorie Harwood, who supported all the choir’s concerts.

Highlights of this special 30th Anniversary Year and 25th 12 Hour Annual Singathon had been the cabaret concert with 25 ‘scrumptious’ puddings being served and the versatility of choir members - a delight to see.

Concerts with the Builth Wells Ladies Choir, Looe Valley Singers, Callington Singers, the Holman Male Voice Choir and the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir had all been memorable, full of splendid choral singing and joy of performing with these choirs.

The choir has performed at a residential home, the Monkey Sanctuary at Looe and the Christmas Fair at Mount Egcumbe House and in the local churches which we appreciate.

Social occasions enjoying each other’s company have been at the Torpoint Bowling Club skittles evening, coffee morning, table top sales and the Christmas lunch.

The 25th 12 Hour Annual Singathon raised £25,000 for YMCA (Torpoint Sliders), a worthwile cause where its facilities and staff help local children, some of whom have special needs, to keep fit and enjoy themselves.

The choir performed at the Remembrance Poppy Concert and also took part in the Civic Parade and Remembrance Service.

Charities the choir supported this year have been Ava’s Fund and Derriford Children’s Cancer to support Ollie Mackay, Arthritic Research and the Oncology Molecular Diagnostic Machine.

Colourful evening of silk painting for Torpoint Wives A demonstration of silk painting was the highlight of the Torpoint Wives Group meeting in February at Cornerstone Church, Torpoint.

Having enjoyed a ‘fun’ evening in January after the Christmas festivities it was a pleasure to welcome Michael Watkins who gave a silk painting demonstration accompanied by his wife, who gave us a short resume on how they started this business many years ago.

Michael had stretched the gossamer silk on to a frame and then did an outline of the pattern he wanted to make.

Thanks also go to Janet Fincher, who is organising the choir’s trip to Benodet in March to sing with Gwen-aod, assisted by Hilda; Bernice Giles was thanked for organising the Christmas meal and marshall Lyn Murray.

Sylvia Fraser, musical director thanked the whole choir confirming that they should be proud of such commitment in a busy year and the committee for their continuing support.

She thanked Chris and Ken, Chris and Paul, Hilda and Steve and the fund-raising committee. Her thanks also went to accompanist Sue Westwell for her hard work, practice and preparation as well as John Stubberfield, for his invaluable help with the keyboard and accompaniament at some of our concerts on his bass guitar. She thanked LIn Curtis, deputy conductor for stepping in at some concerts and also holding extra practices for altos and seconds .

Chris Trethewey, Chris Roper, Sarah Thomas, Lin Curtis, Lyn Murray and Hilda Sims have been voted back in for another year, as has the existing committee. Cathy Gilbertson takes over as publicity and press officer as Elaine Searle, is stepping down from the role, although she is remaining on the committee.

Family’s thanks to Torcare The family of the late Jack Smith, who passed away in January at the age of 84, would like to thank the management and staff of Torcare Nursing Home for the care given to Jack during the three years he stayed with them.

They also thank Torcare for the care given to his wife Fran, sister Diane and daughter Margaret during their lowest days. This will not be forgotten.

Thanks also to family and friends for the many cards and messages of condolence and for their attendance at the funeral at Glyn Valley Crematorium.

Gordon Daniel remembered The family of Gordon Daniel, who so suddenly sadly passed away in November, would sincerely like to thank everyone who attended his funeral and for the very many cards and flowers we received.

We would also like to thank you all for the very generous donations which amounted to £530.60.

This has been given to the Torpoint Athletic Youth Football Club as Gordon and both his grandsons were ex-Torpoint players.

The club have informed Gordon’s family that they greatly appreciate this donation and say it will help provide much needed equipment for their youth teams.
