Go Cornwall livery featured on new fleet

Investment by Citybus is just the ticket Citybus has launched a fleet of new buses for Torpoint and the Rame Peninsular. The new buses complete the delivery of a £5m investment that has seen a total of 31 brand new buses for the city, the first 11 of which went into service last September with another 20 hitting the streets at the start of 2016. The seven new buses, Enviro 400 Double Deckers were introduced in February and are operating on route 70/71. The buses will be in the new bilingual Go Cornwall Bus livery and will include the same premium features as the current Flash fleet. The route has already seen the introduction of a new timetable in January to improve the reliability and the route has also been improved now running via Union Street to speed up journey times between Torpoint and the City Centre. The launch of the new buses took place on

February 18 on board the Torpoint Ferry and members of Plymouth City Council, Torpoint Town Council and local businesses were present to celebrate the significant event. Richard Stevens, managing director at Plymouth Citybus said: “I would like to thank our loyal passengers for their continued support and our staff that make the service run day in day out. I am really excited to see the improvements an investment of this scale can achieve for our passengers. “It has been a challenging 12 months, as we have stretched ourselves to meet the demands of the city and South East Cornwall; this investment has come at a great time, enabling us to deliver quality, safe and reliable value for money bus services to the people of Plymouth.” Information on all our services is available at plymouthbus.co.uk.

Brian Pope will be sadly missed Brian Pope, an outstanding and much-accclaimed baritone with the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir and past secretary and president of Torpoint and Rame Lions Club, has died just days short of his 78th birthday. The choir sang at a celebration of his rich life in St James Church on Friday, February 26, before interment at Torpoint Cemetery. Brian was born in Looe and was a Queen’s Scout. He sang briefly with Polperro Fishermen’s Choir as a young man. He served in the Army and thereafter worked in the building trade with a Plymouth company before becoming a prison officer, based at Dartmoor. He was among the last to do duty on horseback patrol and during his service there the prison housed several notorious inmates. He and his first wife, Carol, later ran an approved school for young offenders in Bedford for some 10 years. He returned to the building trade in partnership with his brotherin-law, forming Pope and Fox, in Torpoint where he lived for some 30 years. His rich voice made him a natural for solos, particularly spirituals, and his rendition of Ol’ Man River was splendidly fine, as was his baritone part in Steel Away. He also sang solos for the Torpoint Lady Singers and was a founder member of Kessenyan Singers. Brian died on February 7 after a short illness, continuing to sing until late January. He is survived by his wife, Liz, and by a son, Jon, and daughter, Teresa, from his marriage to Carol. There are five grandchildren.

Children’s craft workshops are a colourful success Colourful, creative and fun – that was the verdict on the new Rame Crafts Kids Crafts Workshops which were launched in February. Two local artists Lorraine England and Lyn Glover launched the new community arts and crafts initiative for children during the February half term holiday. The two three hour workshops entitled ‘Funky Fish Friends’ and ‘Braid like the Vikings’ were held in the stunning location of The Institute, in Kingsand (Clock Tower). The workshops were well attended by children living on the Rame Peninsula as well as several who were visiting the area during the school holidays. During the workshops the children had a great time experimenting with paints, papers, recycled items, fabric, fibres and embellishments to create a family of funky fish friends and to make a variety of colourful wearable braided items. Organisers Lyn and Lorraine would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to: the adults/children who attended the workshops, the Institute Committee and the Plymouth Play Association and Scrapstore (www.plymouthplay.org.uk ), as well Stevie and Faith who gave their time freely to support the children’s creative journeys during the workshops. Visit the Facebook page - Rame Crafts – to see some of the children’s stunning work.

GB Olympian Mayor’s report for March 2016 Torpoint celebrations to visits college Torpoint Community College students have recently been visited by former Team GB Waterpolo captain Craig Figes, in his new role of Athlete Mentor for Sky Sports Living for Sport. Sky Sports Living for Sport is a free UK secondary schools initiative, delivered in partnership with the charity Youth Sport Trust, which uses sport stars and sport skills to boost confidence, change behaviours, increase attainment and improve life skills. Pupils involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport will also be able to share the activities they have completed, the skills they have learnt and their accomplishments on and off the playing field. During the visit Craig shared his experiences with the group and used his story of triumph over adversity to motivate the pupils to be the best they can be. Craig said: “As a Sky Sports athlete mentor I have the best job in the world working to enthuse and encourage young people through the power of sport and show them that with a little hard work they can achieve anything. “I had a great visit to Torpoint Community College and worked with an outstanding group. They were fantastic throughout the entire day, worked brilliantly on all the tasks and challenges that I set them and really were one of the best groups I’ve worked with this year. “They seemed to have great fun and I hope they proved to themselves that if they keep practicing the ‘6 keys to success’ they already have all the skills required to achieve their dreams.” Curriculum Leader of Learning for PE, Mr Evans, said: “This is the third year we have participated in this scheme and it has once again been a fantastic experience for the staff and students at TCC to meet and work with such a hardworking, enthusiastic and inspirational sportsman in person.” All students involved said what a fantastic experience it had been.

mark Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday Torpoint will be joining in with the rest of the country on June 12 in celebrating Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday. In Torpoint the day will take the form of a large birthday party to be held at Thanckes Park (The Lawn). Starting at 2pm there will be tables available to sit over 1,000 people and partygoers are asked to bring their own chairs and picnics to help them enjoy the afternoon. There will be plenty of room for those who want to set up their own picnic areas and some food and refreshments available on site. Entertainment and games are being planned for the children including the usual bouncy castles and ice cream and for all the family entertainment will run through until the early evening. The event will be free of charge for all to attend. Save the date now and get ready to celebrate.

Torpoint Neighbourhood Plan

The February Neighbourhood Development Plan steering group meeting was notable by the increased attendance from the community, and a strong line of questioning relating to future housing proposals. There was little support for a housing development at Borough Farm, with attendees citing environmental reasons for their opposition. The draft Vision for Torpoint is currently being updated and it is anticipated that the final document will be completed by the middle of March. More details are available on the website www.torpointplan.org.uk or by contacting the administrator on admin@ torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk.

February 9: Dame Esther Rantzen, DBE who is a founder of both ChildLine and The Silver Line came the Torpoint Nursery & Infants School to officially launch their Silver Stories initiative. Silver Stories is a new project set up by the Torpoint Nursery and Infant School to support both the children and elderly people in the community of Torpoint. Children telephone a Silver Listener (an elderly person in Torpoint and then read a short story or poem to them). This not only helps the children to become more confident in their reading skills but also links our children to the elderly community in Torpoint and helps diminish their chances of feeling loneliness and isolation. Also Dame Esther officially opened their new Two Year Old Nursery Room in the presence of parents and special guests. Torpoint Nursery and Infant School began taking two year old children into their nursery in 2012. Due to the local demand and Government plans to increase the number of children being able to access the free 15 hours entitlement, the school made a successful bid with the local authority for capital funding to create a new room purely dedicated to these children. The new room was completed in September 2015 and it provides educational support

Contact Martyn Ruskin 07710139313 or Marcus Matthews 07796175448. Para table tennis star David Wetherill has been included in a 16-strong GB squad to compete in the Lignano Master Open in Italy. This will be the first international competition of the season for the GB Para Table Tennis Team as it prepares for this year’s Paralympics Games in Rio. The 26-year-old, world ranked number six in men’s class six, capped a successful season in 2015 by taking individual bronze and team silver in the European Championships and is hoping to continue that form into the start of what will be an important year. Good Luck David.

SILVER SCISSORS

Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club is keen to sign up more junior sailors Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club is justifiably proud of its cadet section and its role in getting junior sailors afloat. The section is open to young people aged between 8 and 16 and offers weekly sessions on the water during the summer months. In the winter, there are monthly sessions ashore. As well as water confidence and sailing, cadets learn team building, gain skills like first aid, grow their self-assurance, mix with children of different ages and sailing abilities, and most of all have fun. Cadet co-ordinator Phillippa Smerdon said: “We are currently recruiting young people for the 2016 intake of cadets so if your child would like to learn to sail in a safe and supportive environment, do get in touch. “Parents or guardians of cadets have to be members of the club but it is easy to join and not expensive.” Places are limited so if you are interested phone Phillippa on 07918 666339 as soon as possible.

The year looks set to be another exciting and busy one at Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club with a packed programme ahead of events both on and off the water. The spring dinghy racing series has already started but it is not too late to join in. Weather permitting there are weekly gig rowing sessions and summer yacht and dinghy racing starts in April. The club also offers regular windsurfing and scuba diving sessions. Onshore there are a series of free winter talks, a lively St Patrick’s Day celebration on March 12 from 8.30pm with a five-piece Irish folk band, Dr Thud’s Remedy and a members’ family fun day on Easter Sunday on March 27 from 2pm to 5pm with golden ticket egg hunt, Easter bonnet contest, Easter party games, crafts, raffle and more. Sad time as Lions mourn the loss of Brian and Silvia This month’s Lion’s Corner starts with some very sad news. Brian Pope who had been a member of Torpoint and Rame Lions club for a period of 30 plus years sadly passed away on Sunday February 7. Brian was a very well respected and hard working member of the club always ready to lend a hand he held several positions in the club including public relations officer, PA announcer, past President and many more. Brian could be seen with his trusty trailer picking up items to and from the store never tiring. We owe a lot to his efforts in the past. He was also a member of the Rame Male Voice choir and was known for his many solo performances and he will be very much missed by all who knew him. Our condolences go to his wife Lizzy and his family. Another sad loss was Lion Rob Gibson’s wife Silvia who sadly passed away on February 8. Silvia worked tirelessly to support Rob and the Lions club and was always at the forefront of the annual daffodil picking and selling. Silvia could always be seen in the field head bobbing amongst the flowers. She also arranged the catering for the annual Lions Fayre and the senior citizens boat trip organised by the Lions, as well as many other events. Silvia will be sadly missed by all the Torpoint and Rame Lions and her many friends, Our condolences to Lion Rob and all her family. On a happier note we celebrated our 38th anniversary charter dinner at Torpoint

Council Chambers on February 13. Lion president Steve Morris and his wife Lion Julie organised along with helpers a very special evening with a Valentine’s theme. A lovely dinner was provided by Maria Trethewey and her staff with music provided by Mark Waterfield disco. Lion Steve Murray proposed a Loyal toast and afterwards short speeches followed by Lion President Steve Morris and then a response by 2nd Vice District Governor Ian Snell. Lion Vice President Andy Brown welcomed partners and friends and Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn then thanked the Lions club for their contribution and help given to town events and for their fund raising to help others in the area. After the speeches a cheque for £1000 was presented to Sue Smith a representative from the Mustard Tree charity. She thanked the club and explained how many people would benefit from such a generous amount of money. After all the formalities the evening carried on in a lighter mood. Lion and local MP Sheryll Murray donated a bottle of Westminster Whisky as a prize raising £44. The winner, Bob Davidson then put it up for auction which raised a further £60 after it was won by Clive Brinkman. France’s highest honour for D-Day veteran Ernie Photos by Andy Campfield

French Consul Alain Sibiril presents the medal to Ernie World War Two veteran Ernest ‘Ernie’ Burdett has been presented with France’s highest military award at a Torpoint ceremony. D-Day veteran Ernie, who at 103 is one of Britain’s oldest war veterans, was presented with the Légion d’honneur, by the French Honorary Consol for Plymouth Alain Sibiril. The presentation took place at the Tamara Care Home in Thanckes Close and was attended by a number of local dignitaries, children from two local Torpoint schools and Rear Admiral John Clink of the Royal Navy Flag Officer’s Sea Training.

On the 70th anniversary of D-Day in June 2014, the French President Francois Hollande announced that the Légion d’honneur would be awarded to all British veterans who fought for the liberation of France during the Second World War.

Warrant Officer Ernest Burdett embarked from Newhaven on a landing craft and touched down on JIG beach opposite Le Hamel in approximately 5ft 6inches of water. He was part of the team which operated a First Phase

Dame Esther Rant Silver Listeners in Dame Esther Rantzen was in Torpoint in February to lend her support for a new project involving youngsters and the elderly. Dame Esther visited Torpoint Nursery and Infant School to officially launch the Silver Stories initiative at the school and also to officially open the new Nursery Room for two year olds. In August 2011, Dame Esther – who founded the children’s helpline ChildLine in 1986 – wrote an article about the loneliness she had experienced since being bereaved and living alone. She was overwhelmed by the huge response from older people who shared her experience. In November 2011 she was invited to make a key-note speech at a conference at which she came up with the idea of creating a helpline in order to support vulnerable older people, sign-post them to projects and services, break through the stigma of loneliness and isolation and tackle the problems of abuse and neglect. Silver Line was launched prior to Christmas in 2013. Responding to the fact that many elderly people in the community have little or no human contact, Torpoint Nursery and Infant School created Silver Stories in November last year. Children from the school read to elderly folk over the telephone, with calls taking place each week on a day that is convenient to the Silver Listener, during the children’s lunch break and in the presence of a class teacher.

Dame Esther talks to the VIPs and guests Initially the telephone in the headteacher’s office was used but the school has now invested in a mobile phone so that calls can be made from the identified area of the school library.

Torpoint Players pack them in with another panto performance

Policewoman Buttons played by Karen Hemmings Cinderella

The Torpoint Players presented their pantomime Cinderella and the Pantomime Thief at Torpoint Council Chambers in January. Directed by Kyle Surgey and Jess Hallard and written by Peter Nuttall by arrangement with Lazybee Scripts, the show proved particularly popular with local audiences. The pantomime was really well supported and everyone enjoyed the fun of live performances. Kyle Surgey said: “It does take hours of hard work by everyone involved and there are so many people to thank for making it possible, not only the players, but also all of the back up team who make it happen. “It is always rewarding to see a full house and everyone enjoying themselves. It is always a fun evening

for all ages. Thank you all and we will see you next year.” The Torpoint Players were formed in 1978 and staged their first production, Aladdin at Torpoint School. Since then they have put on one or two plays each year, as well as being involved in the annual pant. Over the years they have won a number of awards for comedy, tragedy and melodrama - and that’s just the committee meetings! Kyle added: “We are always interested in meeting new members, so if you’re looking to tread the boards or to help in any way behind the scenes please feel free to talk to any member of the group or pop in and see us at the Band Hut, Sainsbury Car Park, any Tuesday from 7.30 p.m. You will be made most welcome.”

An invitation... Why don’t you get on a bus to Torpoint and come to the AGM of the Rame Peninsula Public Transport Users’ Group (RPPTUG)? It is an opportunity for you to share your experiences on our local bus services, new timetables and related public transport concerns.

DUTCH SAILORS TRAIN AT RALEIGH Sailors from the Royal Netherlands Navy have been practising restoring a ship at sea using HMS Raleigh’s new multi-million pound training rig. A group of 12 Seaman Specialists spent a week at the Royal Navy training base using the replenishment-at-sea (RAS) rig, which was formally opened in September 2013. The rig simulates the transfer of stores, food supplies, liquids, such as fuel, and personnel between auxiliary vessels and warships. The training course was delivered and assessed by five instructors from the Royal Netherlands Navy, supported by Royal Navy personnel, and forms part of the Dutch sailors’ eight month course to prepare them for promotion. The Royal Netherlands Navy have been regular visitors to HMS Raleigh and have previously trained on the old RAS rig. Sergeant Major Robert Bakker, one of the instructors from the Netherlands,

said: “Being able to use this facility is very valuable to us. It is a lot more modern than the old facility here at Raleigh. For a few of our guys it’s the first time they’ve seen a RAS happen. Last night we had a nighttime exercise and it was quite realistic.” HMS Raleigh’s RAS rig features a 25 metre steel mast and three separate steel ship structures which mimic sections of the hull of the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers, a Type 45 destroyer and a general purpose frigate. Its predecessor comprised of just two sections, representing a Royal

Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessel and a warship. During RAS operations ships can come within just 50 metre of each other whilst remaining underway and are linked together by heavy tensioned steel wires to transfer essential supplies. RAS can take place in all weather conditions, day or night. Warrant Officer 1 Kev Whiteley, the Seamanship Training Officer at HMS Raleigh, said: “The rig was initially built as a demonstrator by Rolls Royce to prove their RAS designs for the new carriers. Once the trials were complete it was converted to a training facility and handed over to the Royal Navy. It is a fantastic facility allowing us to train sailors and RFA personnel to carry out what is one of the most hazardous seamanship tasks we engage in at sea. The benefit here is we can train in a safe environment using the equipment the team would encounter on board ship.”

‪#‎SHOWTHELOVE‬ and ‘sow the seed for change’ WILCOVE WI

You may think that this month’s Wilcove WI report refers to our Valentine’s or Mothers day celebrations... yet it does not. It is often commented that ‘a picture paints a thousand words’ so rather than write a long dialogue as to the focus for this article we invite you to pick up your electronic devices (computer, tablet, mobile phone) and type into the search engine http:// fortheloveof.org.uk. What will be presented is a beautiful four minute thoughtprovoking film from Michael Morpurgo, Jeremy Irons and Maxine Peake. Throughout the winter the British Isles have been struck by a series of devastating storms fondly named as Abigail, Frank, Gertrude, Henry, Imogen, Jake and Katie. And while the weather has always been a favourite topic of conversation for the British it is increasingly becoming a matter for local, national and international concern. With politicians and the scientific community ‘locked in’ debates as to the causes there is often a feeling individuals alone cannot effect positive change. Yet as the National Federation of Women’s

Institutes demonstrated in the 1950s when they lobbied for the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign small changes initiated by small groups or individuals can often have a big effect. Our member’s meeting in February focused on two workshops which were led by Celia Lister and Lorraine England. During these workshops our members created fabric brooches from re-cycled items and colourful floral illustrations which reflected the National Federation of Women’s Institute’s February focus upon the environment and climate change www.thewi.org.uk/campaigns/ recent-campaigns-andinitiatives/ women-and-climatechange. Our speaker for January was the highly informative and entertaining David Parker who is part of a dedicated team of volunteers who man the National Coast Watch Station at Rame Head. A member of National Coast Watch Institution www.nci.org.uk since retirement David spoke enthusiastically about the origins of this

invaluable organisation, its key role in safeguarding the coastlines around the British Isles and his watch-keeping duties. Our heartfelt thanks are extended to David and the Rame Head NCI team who spent some 7,872 man hours in the station during 2015 allowing us to enjoy the beautiful Cornish coastline in safety. In March Wilcove WI will conduct its Annual General Meeting and in April our speaker will be Rupert Kirkwood who will talk about ‘Kyaking up the creek’. During 2015 many new members joined Wilcove WI and we hope that in 2016 many more women will come to our meetings to see what the WI can offer them. We are a membership of varied ages, backgrounds and experiences so why not “Kick off” those old preconceptions and join us. We meet every third Tuesday of the month at 7.15 pm in Wilcove Village Hall (PL11 2RD) and during our meeting serve up; a warm welcome, great speakers, teas/ coffees and cakes.

MAKER WITH RAME

Our January meeting always

takes the form of a New Year’s Lunch. This year we were privileged to go to the Royal Western Yacht Club, arranged by our Treasurer, Di, who is a member. Apart from the fact that we arrived in a hail storm this outing was a great joy. The views from the vast window of Dartmoor to the east and Penlee Point to the west was just glorious. The food was perfect and we spent a very happy time together. In December we had our Christmas Members’ Meeting. The Committee look forward to this as all we have to do is provide the refreshments: the members are in charge of entertainments. No speaker. Well, first Di brought in ample supplies of wine but no corkscrew so Ann, Secretary, had to beg one from the Devonport Inn. That sorted, Janet organised a few rounds of Pass the Hat which ruined our hair but got us all laughing. Then, while being continually plied with wine, Sue organised a quiz. From then on things got sillier and sillier and by the time we got to the cake stage we had no time to play ‘Smite’. Our meetings are on the third Friday of the month. Please drop in and join us. Visitors are most welcome.

What is a Home Protection Trust? • What does it protect? • How does it work? • What other assets can it protect?

By David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services First, we create a Trust which we call a Home Protection Trust as that is the main asset most people want to protect. The Trust is a very special document and drafting a Trust Deed is a restricted legal occupation which our

specialist Trust Barristers are able to do. Once it is created we transfer your property into the Trust where it is ring fenced and immediately protected from all unforeseen eventualities. The word unforeseen is crucial. We also know that one day we could run into financial difficulties for no fault of our own, or go into a care home, or cause an

accident and be liable for a negligence claim, but provided these things are not anticipated at the time of transfer into trust they are absolutely protected. Most people want to hand their home down to their children one day and as we get older we start to worry that our children or whoever are our beneficiaries might not inherit, for no fault of ours.

A Home Protection Trust has many more advantages. Property in Trust does not require Probate after we are gone. It is available instantly to our beneficiaries saving the stress of applying for Probate, a long wait of months before anything can be done, and saving Probate costs which can be substantial if a professional is appointed to obtain Probate. Another benefit is that property in Trust cannot be lost to an aggrieved relative, as it cannot be challenged under the 1975 Inheritance Act, which can happen when property is left solely by Will and not protected by a Trust. Other assets can be put into the Trust such as cash savings, shares etc, but not ISAs as they have an individual tax advantage to you.

Torpoint Lady Singers reflect on a successful year

The Torpoint Lady Singers held their annual meeting on February 8 at Cornerstone Church. Chair Chris Trethewey thanked the choir, who had carried out many engagements during the year, which had been much appreciated by the communities in which they had been performed and the charities that have benefited from the generous donations. The 24th 12 hour annual singathon had raised £2970 for Sarcoma Research. Chris paid tribute to Jennie Reid, choir secretary, for her excellent work and support to herself during the year. She thanked all the officers including vice-chair Bernice, who was resigning but will remain on the committee. Chris presented her with a bouquet of flowers in appreciation of her dedication to the choir. She also thanked Sarah Thomas, the treasurer, for keeping the finances in order and Hilda Sims, fund-raising chair, for organising events to keep the choir in funds. Chris thanked musical director Sylvia Fraser for her patience, loyalty, dedication and talent helping the choir maintain high standards of singing and to Sue Westwell, the talented accompanist, for her loyalty and talent, whilst this year taking on the post of Librarian as well. Lin Curtis, deputy musical director. was also thanked, also Gaye and Joan for their jams and chutneys, raising money for our funds. Sylvia thanked the choir and said she was very proud of them, their dedication and commitment, although sometimes this was not easy to maintain, she congratulated the members on their presentation, but reminded them to ‘smile’ and build rapport with their audiences. She thanked Sue the accompanist, for outstanding support she has given her, and to Lin Curtis, for taking extra practices to help Seconds and Altos. Sylvia thanked Elaine for the publicity which helps to give the choir a high profile. Lin Curtis replied it had been a privilege and pleasure to help. Highlights of the year had been the singathon, the trip to Builth Wells to sing with the ladies choir there, which fostered the love of singing, at the same time raising money for charity; the trip to sing with the Mousehole Male Voice Choir, travelling in atrocious weather to receive a warm welcome from the Bude Metric Band raising £300 for MIND. The choir has sung with the Torpoint Town Band, Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir and at the Poppy Concert which is always a momentous evening. The joint Christmas Concert with The Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir proved to be a very special evening with the church decorated with 40 Christmas trees as part of the Christmas Tree Festival and featuring three excellent choirs. The Torpoint Lady Singers, The Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir and the Torpettes from Torpoint Community College and the superb voice of Maggie Holden, raised £1270 for the Plymouth and District Leukaemia Fund. The choirs thanked St James Church for allowing the concert to be held there and the church committee for assistance after the concert. A quiz evening, barn dance, cabaret concert with 23 delicious puddings contributed to the camaraderie between the choir members and the sense of belonging to an extended family. All officers were re-elected as was the committee. Hilda Sims has taken on the role of vice-chair. 2016 is a year to look forward to as it will be Torpoint Lady Singers’ 25th 12 hour annual singathon, with the Plymouth and District Leukaemia Fund being the charity which will be supported. 2017 will be the choir’s 30th Anniversary and thought will be given to mark this special year. New members are always welcome and this year the choir was delighted to welcome three new members and hope they will bring fresh energy, ideas and will enjoy singing with the choir.

Is the Church still relevant in 2016? In an ever changing world there are many who would say the Christian church has lost its relevance. In some ways as I look back over the last 50 years, I would have to agree, but as the church is ‘the body of Christ’ and not an institution it is able to evolve to re-engage with modern man. It is interesting to note that over 7.6 million people attend church at least once a month, and this at a time when competition for our time has never been greater. Locally in the past few weeks all the churches who are members of Torpoint Churches Together met together for a service of unity on a Sunday morning at Cornerstone. The church was full and there were even people in the gallery! Everyone enjoyed being together expressing our common faith in the hope that Jesus Christ offers the world. Being relevant is very important. When Jesus walked the earth over 2000 years ago the religion of his day had lost touch with the ordinary people. Jesus was able to re-energise faith, hope and love. His care for those deemed ‘outcast’ was amazing. He hardly ever left His home nation of Israel and yet what He did and said has affected millions of people since. Down through the ages the church has faced many challenges to get alongside ordinary people. The Salvation Army are famous for the way they reached out with brass band music and caring for the destitute. Today we are finding other ways of reaching

out with the love of Christ to our world: The work of Shekinah mission in Plymouth among the homeless and those struggling with addictions; the Soup Run feeding the homeless; the Street pastors coming alongside people enjoying the night time economies of our towns and cities and the work of SALT (sexual abuse listening therapy) a group I volunteer with, based in Union Street who support adult survivors of sexual abuse. The work of the Liskeard and Looe Foodbank has been very important in the Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula area. Many, many families and single people have been helped. Churches in Torpoint have been working very closely with the Foodbank and are now ready to set up a Foodbank depot in Torpoint. This will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9.30am to 11.30am at St James Church Hall, starting from Monday March 7. Food vouchers are available from Jobcentre Plus, CAB and various other agencies who will assess people’s needs and try to resolve their problems. The vouchers can be brought to the depot where they will be exchanged for boxes of emergency food. Jesus said: ‘I will build my church.’ I am certain of this, no matter what happens in the world. The church, with God’s help, will find a way to be at the forefront of sharing God’s amazing love with members of the human race, for generations to come.

The meaning of Maundy The Pensioners’ Voice meeting held in the Community Hall, Kingsand in February was taken by David Rosson as the chairman, Mr. Michael, was on holiday. When David took the opening prayer he asked for a brief silence in tribute to two members who had recently died - Mrs Sylvia Gibson and Mrs Margaret Pullen. Those members paying their subscription were given their new membership cards, which listed this year’s events, the first of note being the spring holiday on the Isle of Wight as from March 14. David then introduced the speaker for the afternoon Sam Bedwell, one of our valued members Sam told how he had served as a Yeoman in the Queen’s Bodyguard and one of his favourite events had been the Maundy Service. This is a service held at a different cathedral each year. Always previously held in London, the Queen introduced the annual change in

Pensioners Voice location in 1953. The reigning monarch distributes money, food and clothing to the poor of the parish, chosen for their service to the locality by the diocese, the number according to the age in years of the Monarch. This year the 90 men and women will receive their gifts personally from Her Majesty. Sam raised a laugh when he explained that it was traditionally the job of the Yeomen to carry the huge heavy silver trays on their heads in case the rude, rough, peasantry in the 13th Century should be tempted to snatch it. Once there were two trays, now there are six. Sam had brought with him a sample of the symbolic Maundy Money - six small silver coins, the largest about the size of the old-fashioned threepenny-bit ,

and now quite valuable as much sought-after by collectors. Still following the old traditions, nosegays are carried to ward off the smell of the unwashed poor. And the Almoners carry linen towels ready to dry the feet of the washed, as up to the 1700s , the command of Jesus to do so was obeyed (even by Elizabeth in 1558) the custom gradually died out but the symbol remains. Sam ended his talk by explaining that the title of Maundy comes from the Latin Mandamus - Commandment - Jesus commanded that we should love one another - and also from the old English name of the wicker baskets called maunds in which the gifts were carried . Sam kindly answered many questions from his interested audience before being thanked for his talk by David. Tea was served and the raffle drawn, and the meeting closed at 4pm. The next meeting will be on March 10, when anyone over the age of 50 will be made most welcome.
