The Trust has reached agreement with the vendors and agreed the purchase arrangements.

All the necessary legal work will take place over the next few weeks, with the expectation that the site can be in the Trust’s hands by mid-July. The plan then is to put the necessary safety work in place and open the site as a pop-up venue for small events, ideally this summer.

Project manager Simon Ryan said: “What incredible support! A real burst of energy and excitement from the community is woven all the way through this project. We have been blown away by the response –amazing!”

There is now an intense period of six months gathering resources, form filling and Villagers celebrate...BBC Spotlight coverage negotiating to secure the £1.4m required to complete the project.

It will take three to four years to complete, starting on the ground floor with the pub, cafe and heritage centre, and culminating in four affordable flats available for rent by local people.

In the late May afternoon sun, a community were in jubilant spirit on Cawsand Beach celebrating a landmark achievement - The Old Ship Inn had been saved.

In March the Peninsula Trust opened a community investment share scheme to raise funds to buy The Old Ship Inn in Cawsand and rebuild it to create lowcost housing for local people, a bar-café area and a small museum. In just eight weeks, the community raised an incredible £137,533 from a grand total of 320 investors.

The Trust has also secured a charity grant from the Plunkett Foundation, a national support organisation, meaning that they have enough to buy the building.

THE GREAT PLASTIC PICK UP Navy personnel and civilian staff recently took part in the Daily Mail’s Great Plastic Pick-Up. Ten years ago the Daily Mail launched their trail-blazing campaign to end the scourge of plastic clogging up the beaches and ocean and in that time, there has been a staggering 85 per cent reduction in the number of plastic bags used in Britain, the manufacture of micro beads has been banned, supermarkets are vowing to eliminate single-use packaging and plastic bottle cash-back schemes are being considered across the UK. The Daily Mail joined forces with Keep Britain Tidy to encourage communities, schools, families and individuals to get together during a weekend in May to clear rubbish from our beaches, streets and beauty spots.

Hewitt, there were 75 members of the public and military personnel from HMS Raleigh and Devonport Ships, visiting Tregantle beach on Sunday May 13 to clean up any waste that had washed ashore. Just on the cove called Blackie Ball which is only accessible for 45 minutes between tides, the team managed to remove over 25 bags of plastic alone before concentrating on the rest of the beach.

Scouring the beach, in total the team removed over 40 bags of rubbish, multiple fishing trays, two tons of rope and much more.

CPO Brook-Hewitt does at least two beach cleans every month, and personally goes down every Sunday and brings at least a bag if not more each week. Organised beach cleans are held twice a month and they usually attract between 20 to 30 volunteers who remove over 20 bags a

time, if not more.

CPO Brook-Hewitt said: “After cleaning the beach for over 9 months now, this was the most successful one yet, removing over 45 bags of plastic, loads and loads of fishing crates and the biggest thing was a two ton section of netting wedged behind rocks.

After six and a half hours we reached a massive goal, beating all other beach cleans in the surrounding areas. Local and military personnel’s efforts were outstanding. This continued effort will not only make our lives easier in the future but generations ahead of us. Please support us and join our Facebook page and our next beach clean on 24th June.”

Once the clean-up had been complete, the day’s photos were shared with the Daily Mail. This offers a chance of three lucky groups to be rewarded with a professional community make-over, worth £10,000.

South West Ambulance Service train local community volunteers as Primary Responders, who are called out by the Ambulance Control Centre to respond to 999 emergency calls, ‘to give life support procedures’ until paramedics arrive.

The Responders are all unpaid volunteers and after their initial training by the Ambulance Service, rely on ‘The Friends’ to fund their vehicle, running costs, and even uniforms.

First Responders are literally a lifeline to people on The Rame, and would welcome new volunteers to join their group.

The Commodore of Cawsand Bay Sailing Club, Ian Turpitt, seized the initiative to raise desperately needed funds for The Friends of Rame Peninsula First Responders Group by organising a summer dance on June 23 in Maker With Rame Village Hall, featuring Cornwall’s top group of the 60s, The Jaguars.

Brittany Ferries have also come to the rescue by donating a £200 Voucher which will be auctioned at the summer dance. (Proxy bids will be accepted in advance).

Helicopter thrill for youngsters Local children from Jack and Jill’s nursery on Trevorder Road, Torpoint were lucky enough to be able to visit a Dauphin Helicopter that had landed in HMS Raleigh.

The Dauphin is a medium weight multipurpose twinengine helicopter and was stationary at HMS Raleigh for the afternoon so children from the nursery, which is situated just beside the helicopter pad, could have a look.

Jack and Jill’s manager Louise Moulton said: “For many years the children have watched the helicopter flying in and out of the Naval base and have been fascinated by the aircraft, waving every-time it passes. The children, aged between 18 months and four years have been so excited about it, lots of them talking about flying and going on holiday” Colour Sergeant Nick Day who is a Board and Search School Instructor from 1 Assault Group Royal Marines, organised the tour of the helicopter and the children were able to go inside and see the helicopter close up.

The day ended with the children lining up waiting for the helicopter to depart, the pilot turned the helicopter around to face the children, then bobbed the nose of the aircraft up and down to say good bye.

Cupcake Day in June Torcare Nursing Centre is taking part in ‘Cupcake Day’ on June 14 on behalf of the Alzheimers Society selling homemade cupcakes from 10.30am in the main reception.

All family members and friends of Torcare are welcome to our Summer Fete Friday July 20 at 11am starting with an old fashioned Punch and Judy show, followed by a BBQ lunch in the garden with an afternoon of song by Wendy J. Maker Memories are made of this ‘Maker Memories’ is a community project that aims to capture the rich and diverse heritage of Maker Camp in South East Cornwall. It is is one of the inspirational and creative projects supported by the The Box, formerly Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery.

The project is led by volunteers from the Maker with Rame Community Interest Company. They have been working with a variety of community members to capture stories from the people who attended the Camp on a school holiday, to the musicians and artists who are based there today.

Photographs, film, objects and ephemera have been collected to give an insight into how important Maker is to the thousands of people that have visited over the years.

The project’s volunteers have been supported by Sociology and Media Arts students from the University of Plymouth, and students from the Extended Diploma in Film, Animation and Media Production at Plymouth College of Art and Instant Light Productions. In turn, they have been supported by Maker-based creatives Patchwork Studios and Dom Moore Photography.

Although Maker was originally a military base (from the late 18th century, it’s most well known as the school holiday camp established by Nancy Astor and the Virginia House Settlement in the 1920’s for ‘deprived city children.’

Apart from a brief spell during World War II when it was recommissioned as a military base, it continued as this until its closure in 1987. As a result, thousands of children (mainly from Plymouth) had their first and sometimes only childhood holiday at Maker.

More recently Maker has hosted hundreds of musicians who have played and learned their craft at the venue, thousands of festival-goers (with an annual music festival starting in 1999) and artists who had studios there. There’s also been a campsite and facilities for people to hold their wedding.

Regardless of whether the’re young or old, regular or an occasional visitor, what’s become clear through the project is that everyone holds Maker dear to their hearts.

The wind and basic facilities are more than made up for by the stunning location and panoramic views. For those who are local, there’s a strong sense of community, with music and the arts as its beating heart.

Maker holds many special memories for many, many people.

The opening was held in the newly refurbished Nissen Hut at Maker Camp.

Several hundred people attended the event and were entertained by musicians Tony Harris and Elani Evangelou.

The exhibition includes photographic and film displays, and a free Maker Memories newspaper, designed by local designer Dave Tetley from Studio 51, which features archive and contemporary photographs and interview extracts.

Following a busy and successful two weeks at Maker, the exhibition then moved to The Box Community Hub on Floor 5 at House of Fraser in Plymouth where it will run from June 5 to July 31.

Alongside this several Maker inspired events have taken place at the exhibition space, including film shows, reminiscence sessions and live music events by Maker musicians, Phoenix Elleschild and Jonathan Stafford from Haunt the Woods and Elani Evangelou.

Mayor Lambert Keise elected again Torpoint Town Council’s Annual Meeting and Mayor Choosing Ceremony was held on May 17 in the Council Hall, Torpoint.

Master of Ceremony’s Town Crier Clive O’Shaughnessy, under the direction of the Town Clerk, announced the proceedings. Following a review of his year of office, which included thank you presentations, the retiring Town Mayor Councillor Lambert Keise was elected to serve for a second civic year 2018/19.

He signed his Declaration of Acceptance of Office in front of honoured guests, councillors, and residents of the town. Guests included the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Coun Wendy Foster and her Consort Coun Ken Foster; Sheryll Murray MP; Mayor of Liskeard Councillor Christina Whitty and Consort Terry Whitty; Deputy Mayor of Saltash Councillor Gloria Challen and Consort Neil Challen; Cornwall Councillor John Crago; Mike Pearn and Mrs Val Pearn. Keise introduced Maureen Keise as Mayoress for the civic year 2018/19.

Councillor Mrs Chris Goodman was elected to serve as Deputy Town Mayor for 2018/19 and introduced Chris Goodman as her Consort. Revd. Canon Lynn Parker will continue to serve as the Mayor’s Chaplain and Joshua Foster from Torpoint Explorer Scouts will serve as The Mayor’s Cadet. The Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor toasted each other and raised their glasses and drank a toast to the Town of Torpoint.

Cornwall Councillor John Crago presented a cheque for £1,000 to FLEET (Front Line Emergency Equipment Trust) representative Malcolm Trebilcock, the funds were raised while Councillor Crago was elected Town Mayor in the civic year 2016/17.

Councillor Crago said: “I am delighted to see these funds support FLEET on behalf of my late brother, his wife Jan and their family, who have helped raise many thousands of pounds for FLEET to benefit the residents of Torpoint.”

I am looking forward to representing the town as Mayor for a second year and continuing the work on the development of the council projects in the forthcoming civic year.

For your information after many years’ service Chris Harris, our current town clerk will be reducing his hours and will be retaining the role of responsible finance officer (RFO) and human resources manager for the council.

On behalf of the council I would like to thank Chris for his dedicated service and professionalism to the town. I am pleased to announce that from July Milly Southworth, our current deputy town clerk will be promoted and will become our new town clerk. We are also welcoming a new administration assistant Tina Morris to the team who will strengthen the resources available to the council.

To the person or persons who thought it amusing to block the radio channel of the Road Marshal communication system with music, at the recent Blessing of the Standard Parade, be aware that you were putting lives at risk. The parade contained many young people who were depending on the marshals for protection and guidance, in the event of an incident.

The radios are the only means of communication amongst the team and unfortunately due to this selfish act this was made more difficult than necessary. Ukulele band is thriving

Torpoint Ukulele Band was launched in November last year and is going from strength to strength.

It is a very informal group, with no previous experience, led by Kevin Baker whose enthusiasm spurs the band on to achieve what they can.

TUB’s first performance came just a few weeks later at the Big Sing in St James’ Church in December. The performance was well received by the audience and helped by the jingle bells played by the Brownies (which masked their ‘bum’ notes).

Members of the band continue to learn new chords and songs and are encouraged to sing along

although this is not a prerequisite of joining!

The band would welcome new members of any age and ability to rehearsal nights which are on Thursdays at 7pm in the St James’ Church Hall. The group meets for approximately an hour and it only costs £1 which is an exceptionally cheap price for professional tuition.

There is no need to bring a ukulele as there is always one available to borrow so if you think you would like to get involved, either turn up or see the TUB Facebook page. Updates on whether there is a meeting that week are always posted on Facebook.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers gathered at Torpoint to take part in the annual South East Cornwall St George’s D Parade.

The event takes place every year in a different town. Next year it will be the turn of Saltash to host. The parade set off at 1.30pm from Albion Road down through the main road with marshals closing off the road to traffic.

Each town group was headed by their town officials including Mayors and Deputies. They then assembled in St James Church for a service before a return parade up Antony Road before going into the Council chambers for a reception.

The streets were lined with families and friends which made the occasion so special.

Chris Goodman Torpoint Deputy Mayor was in the lead Torpoint group with the Torpoint Scouts and Explorers.

Model occasion in Millbrook

Millbrook Model Mariners will be holding their 2018 Open Day on the lake at Millbrook on Saturday June 23 to coincide with the Millbrook Open Gardens Day. In addition to models being sailed on the lake, there will be static displays of models from local clubs, refreshments, a rubber duck race following last year’s outstanding success.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to talk to local modellers about their models ranging from small sailing yachts to racing models, warships, fishing boats, lifeboats and tugs as well as finding out more about this friendly local club.

Feast of football in Torpoint

Young players from Torpoint and Saltash Nearly 50 teams of young footballers took part in a weekend tournament organised

by Torpoint Athletic Juniors FC at The Mill in May. Over 600 budding young football stars of the future took part in the tournament - and thanks to sponsors and programme advertisers, every player received a medal for taking part - no matter where they finished.

Five pitches were set up for age groups

Torpoint Athletic between Under 7s and Under 12s, with the Under 7s, Under 9s and Under 12s taking part on Saturday and Under 8s, Under 10s and Under 11s on Sunday.

The Under 5s and Under 6s were not forgotten either. Because of their age they cannot play in a tournament but played friendly matches instead - and all received a medal to recognise their participation.

planning, with club chairman Matt Burgoyne working tirelessly to secure the bond between Torpoint Juniors, Youth and Torpoint AFC. The dream is for more of the Torpoint Juniors to play up through to Youth and then join the adult teams and proudly play for their community team.

The emphasis on the tournament was for all players to have a fun family day playing matches and being proud of their

achievements, win or lose. Teams travelled from Devon and Cornwall to attend the tournament with over 300 players each day.

Addiitonal funds raised at the event will be used to purchase new equipment for the next season.

Torpoint Athletic Juniors FC are always looking to grow and will soon have their first female coaches trained ready for the new season. Â

Glorious weather for the Black Prince Festival

Donation for Mount Edgcumbe Model Railway Society

The Black Prince Cornish festival took place in the villages of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand.

The traditional May Day festival takes place annually as a symbol to banish winter and welcome spring and summer which was reinforced by the presence of some glorious, sunny May Day weather this year.

The festivities included the procession of the Black Prince flower boat, decked with fresh flowers, carried high on the shoulders by ratings from HMS Raleigh through the red and white decorated streets.

Both locals and visitors alike enjoyed the spectacle as well as the music and Maypole dancing, the crowning of the May Day King and Queen, the garden fayre at Kingsand and our very own Town Crier, Lion Clive O’Shaughnessy.

Monies raised from the event go to the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club and is used to

Alexander Lush has donated £300 to the Mount Edgcumbe Model Railway Society as part of its policy of supporting local causes. The donation will benefit the local area and the enjoyment of people visiting the Mount Edgcumbe estate.

The annual Lions Summer Fair will take place on July 21 this year at the Torpoint Community College and there is still time to rent a pitch. Coffee morning at Kingsand

Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions coffee morning took place last month at Kingsand.

Visitors and locals alike enjoyed a morning browsing the various stalls, taking part in the raffle and enjoying the refreshments.

A huge thank you goes to all the Lions who took part, especially to Lion Julie Morris who organised it. Over £200 was raised for charity

There is still time to obtain a sponsor form and take part in a fun, family walk at Mount Edgcumbe on Sunday June 24. Not only can you have a super day out, you can also raise funds for YOUR own chosen charity or good cause.

The 10km sponsored walk starts at 10am at Maker Church. After the race, all registered walkers will receive a complimentary soft drink. 80% of monies raised by registered walkers are kept by their chosen cause: the remaining 20% goes to Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions which will then be ploughed back into the local community so it is a win-win situation.

All walkers have a fun day out, their chosen charities benefit and the local community benefits via the Lions charity!

Trophies are also awarded for the most money raised by an organised group; the most money raised by an individual (over 15 years old); and the most money raised by an individual (under 15 Years old).

Torpoint College is praised for quality of Holocaust education Special day for bowlers Torpoint Bowling Club members welcomed the Deputy Mayor of Torpoint Christine Goodman and David Squires representing the Chestnut Appeal to the opening day of their 2018 lawn bowling season.

At the opening two cheques were presented to David Squires, the first by member Graham Rice for £1,015 which he, his wife Dianne and his family raised at their recent golden wedding anniversary celebration evening.

The second cheque for £1,885 were the proceeds of club President Barrie Stephens year of fund-raising efforts.

In Barrie’s absence due too a recent elective surgery procedure, the Deputy Mayor Christine Goodman presented the cheque on his behalf.

Mr Squires thanked Graham and the club and outlined the Chestnut Appeal’s current targets, which are to provide an MRI scanner for the urology unit in Truro and fund the provision of a prostate nurse for Cornwall.

The Deputy Mayor spoke to the members thanking them for their efforts in maintaining the facilities for lawn bowling in Torpoint and bowled the first wood of the club’s 2018 season.

RAME GIG ROWERS AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ON SCILLY ISLES By the time the last of Rame Gig Club Rowers arrived on the Isles of Scilly on Friday lunchtime, the islands were heaving. With 158 boats entered into the 29th World Gig Championships, it was set to be a busy bank holiday weekend. Rame had six crews entered for the weekend of rowing, starting Friday night with the Supervets races.

Rame Ladies crew of six over 50s headed to the start line for the first race in Penlee Point. With 34 crews entered in the race the team had a good start and by the time they came into view of the cheering Rame supporters they were well in the mix.

The winter training seemed to pay off as the ladies appeared to go up a gear, and started passing boats in the final stretch, finishing a very respectable 18th place.

Next up for Rame were the men’s Supervets, also in Penlee Point. With an average age of 58, the men were racing against 31 other crews. They had a good start and by the time the supporters could clearly see the gigs approaching, Penlee Point was up there near the front.

Again the masses of Rame supporters erupted in cheering and encouragement from the vantage points on St Mary’s, the men rowed with extreme guts and strength and finished in an amazing sixth place.

With euphoric rowers and club members, the boat was put away for the night, and a celebratory pint was drunk. But only the one as the serious main event was to start the next day.

By Saturday lunchtime, the sun was shining and the sea conditions calm. Rame Gig Club’s two gigs Minnadhu and Penlee Point were rigged and ready to race. The Ladies Race, again first, saw 154 boats rowing out to St Agnes for the 1.7 mile race back to the harbour on St Mary’s.

Minnadhu, the A crew, consisted of four 16 to 18 year olds, each experiencing the World Championships for the first time with two more experienced rowers.

Starting in an arc the 154 boats jostled for position and clear water as they funnelled towards the finish. Both crews had a good start, Minnadhu edged up the field having a brilliant race and finishing a very respectable position, in the top third of the field. The ladies B crew managed to hold position, even passing gigs in the final stages and came in 108th.

Once back on Town Beach all the gigs changed crews and paddles, it was then time for the Men’s race. The A crew, in Minnadhu, were the youngest crew to compete in the World Championships, with a total age of 103. The B crew by comparison had a total age of 332.

Once the men had rowed out to the start line at St Agnes, it was a brief wait until the countdown to race. Minnadhu got off to a great start and pulled through the field of boats, by the time they came into view of the cheering crowds they were in the top 30.

With the excitement rising amongst the Rame supporters, the youngsters just kept up the pressure racing across the finish line at a very respectable 25th position. It wasn’t long before the cheering was directed to Penlee Point crossing the line in the top half of the group.

Once back on the beach there was a slight break in the racing whilst the results for the ladies races were posted with the heats and berths for the second race posted.

The 154 boats were placed into heats of 12 boats, where the top two of each heat got promoted up and the bottom two relegated down a heat. So still plenty of opportunities to gain places with three further races to follow.

The next three races of the weekend were shorter 1.3 miles, from Nut Rock off Tresco in a straight line into St Marys’ Harbour. As the crews raced, each knew they were approaching the finishing line as the roar from supporters in the Quay got

louder. It was a disheartening end to the days racing for both Penlee Point crews and the young men in Minnadhu, as they all came in the bottom two of each group and were duly relegated to the heat below. Only the ladies A crew managed to stay in their heat E. Many of us woke on Sunday morning to the distinctive sound of fog horns. The visibility was poor, the air damp and cold. This was not helped with many calls to family at home, to hear of cloudless blue skies and raising temperatures, on a fine bank holiday weekend.

As we headed to Town Beach for a 9am meet, organisers announced that the morning’s race was cancelled, the situation would be reviewed at midday, for only a final race that afternoon.

It was quite a sight looking out towards Tresco to see thick fog on the water, whilst the sun was breaking through on St Mary’s. With some free time coffees were drunk and as the sun fully broke out over the land many rowers were seen swimming and relaxing on many of St Mary’s beaches. It was hard to believe that just a few hundred yards offshore thick fog hung over the water.

At 1pm there was some clearing of the fog and Tresco came into view, for brief moments at a time. There was a mighty roar as it was announced that the ladies crews were to head over to Nut Rock for the final race. We were all very aware that conditions could deteriorate and the whole event may still be cancelled.

As we rowed out, St Marys would disappear from sight, as the fog came down over the water, but the racing did go ahead.

The Ladies B, in Penlee Point, had a strong start and a close race, but were unable to stay with the lead boat they finishing their final in third place - 111th overall.

On completing the final race, all of the boats rafted up with each other, just past the finish line, popping corks and celebrating a great weekend’s rowing. From this vantage point the races in the heats above were watched.

As group E came into view, it could be seen that Minnadhu was fighting for first place, as they raised their paddles in the air, Rame supporters erupted everyone sharing the excitement and victory of our young ladies crew - a fantastic 49th position, with a podium place later in the evening.

Next it was time for the men, Penlee Point were in group G, they gave it their all, with a hard close race they came over the line 7th, finishing 79th overall.

The young men in Minnadhu had much support from other clubs watching from the Quay, as word of their ages and achievements circulated. They certainly were making a name for themselves over the weekend. With much attention, the young men rowed hard and strong, they fought well and finished the weekend’s racing for Rame Gig Club at a hugely respectable 43rd position.

There were murmurs amongst the crowds that this young crew were to be watched over the coming months as a real potential to challenge the more experienced and able clubs.

With boats pulled up the beach and back onto trailers, most rowers had pints in hand as it was time for the presentation.

There was a roar of applause from all at Rame when the Winners of Group E were announced. Rame’s Ladies A crew were presented with their trophy and given a moment of great pride as they were cheered by all.

Needless to say the party continued well into the night, as each and everyone of us reflected on the weekend’s achievements and started to plan for 2019.

Isabella’s masterclass in maths Year 10 Torpoint Community College student Isabella Spicer has recently attended a Mathematics Masterclass residential programme run by Plymouth University.

This enrichment activity is something that may be of benefit to Isabella in future stages of her on going education both in Sixth Form and university applications, and is a great achievement.

The residential was part of a continuing mathematics programme hosted by Dr Jenny Sharp and followed on from a series of Masterclass events attended by Isabella at the University

throughout both secondary and primary school.

The course consisted of a series of sessions over three days covering topics such as matrices

and coding, topology and fractional geometry.

Twenty three students attended from all over Cornwall, North and South Devon.

Well done Isabella!

Record-breaking Ten Tors team

A six-strong team from Torpoint community College successfully completed the Ten Tors challenge in May. The team of Ross Harvie, Jacob Slocombe, Dylon Greenwood, Harry McSherry, Noah Rees and Katie Harvie (pictured above) completed the gruelling 45-mile course in the fastest ever time by a Torpoint Community College team.

Mousehole Male Voice Choir

A recent concert by Torpoint Lady Singers and Mousehole Male Voice Choir at St James Church in Torpoint was a great success, raising over £600 for Cancer Research. Justine Dalton performed beautifully as a soloist and John Payne did a great job as the master of ceremonies. The choirs enjoyed fellowship both before and after the concert. The next Torpoint Lady Singers concert will be at Cornerstone Church with Saltash Ladies Choir.

Love is the Way Do you remember the impact of those words?

Love is the way.

It was the theme of the sermon delivered by the Bishop of Chicago at the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

It certainly caused quite a stir. As I listened to the sermon and the preacher’s words, for a while it seemed possible to believe that it could be true.

That the way of the world could indeed be guided on the principle of ‘Love is the way’.

Perhaps your mind, like mine, imagined all sorts of situations that would be different if love truly was the way.

Now, a few weeks later as you read this, perhaps those feelings seem far away. Many news briefings have since convinced us that nothing has changed. Briefings that confirmed that the motivations of people, governments and nations are not driven by love but by self-interest, selfishness and greed.

So that’s that then. It was a nice dream when it happened but we are living in the real world again now! But perhaps we should not give up hope.

Remember Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a

dream’ speech. He may have had the dream that people of all races and colours could live together amicably but sadly did not live to see it, and even now it is not achieved. But it will be.

No one could have imagined the marriage of a member of our Royal Family to a mixed race American. But it happened because the world is changing. It can change. People can stand up against the tide of cynicism and doubt and make a change.

The world is changing and even though it is in turmoil now, we can still hold to that dream that ‘Love is the way’. We can hold to that dream even though cynicism and outright selfishness will discourage us. We can make it happen around us by our own actions.

The crucifixion of Jesus may have seemed like the end for his followers but it wasn’t. They were inspired and so his message was carried on and still is being carried on by those who follow him.

Whatever our faith, or lack of one, we can all dream and influence those around us and at the very least make our homes a place where love is the way.

Rosemary Slee, President, welcomed everyone to the May meeting and introduced guest speaker, Trish Cherry, who gave a most enlightening talk entitled ‘Ageing with Vitality’.

Trish explained that ‘vitality’ in this case is not purely being active but covers all aspects of things associated with the ageing process, including diet, exercise, self-care and meditation as well as being aware of how vital we are to our family, friends and society in general. We all very much enjoyed Trish’s talk and were inspired by some of her recommendations.

Life of Mabel Lucie Attwell remembered

Diana Lawer from the Plymouth Postcards Collectors Club was guest speaker at the recent Torpoint Wives Group meeting.

Chair Eve Oates welcomed Diana, a speaker the group had invited many times before.

Her subject was Mabel Lucie Attwell, the much loved illustrator, of which the members all had fond memories of our Christmas Lucie Attwell Annual.

She had huge commercial success, but also had a unique appeal with her cheeky cards to families and soldiers in the trenches during the First and Second World Wars , brightening up the trenches.

Her upbringing was a cold one: her father was a butcher, who was eccentric and very strict. Mabel’s first success came when she was only 16, by selling her postcards she was able to pay for her own further education at St Martins School of Art where she met warm and sociable Harold Earnshaw, they married and had three children.

Her illustrations were on Christmas cards, magazine covers, campaigns for the London Underground and her illustrations of children’s classic books were loved around the world.

Her personal life was tinged with tragedy: her son Brian died and her husband passed away at the early age of 51. Mabel said she had a full and lively life and hoped she had made people happy and always seemed to have a twinkle in her eye. She died in Cornwall in November 1964.

Eve gave the vote of thanks, Jackie served the tea and the raffle was donated by Kath and Sadie.

‘Jesus We See’ exhibition in Torpoint An exhibition depicting images of Jesus is coming to Torpoint.

Jesus We See had its debut showing at St Ives during Easter week. Now it’s travelling to Torpoint, where it will be on view for a week at St James’ Church. The exhibition is on loan from the Salvation Army at St Ives, and Mark Read who put together that original exhibition together is kindly assisting with its installation at Torpoint. He is also going to give a talk on the art history and concept.

This collection of images of Jesus are drawn from different cultures, times and perspectives.

Together the paintings, drawings and prints give multiple interpretations and impressions from the life of Jesus.

Local curators from St James’ clergy and congregation will be available to chat to visitors and listen to their ideas. Refreshments will also be available and entry is free.

The exhibition will be at St James Church from June 25 to July 1 and is open from 10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm.

Also prayer breakfasts will be available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:30am.

These will consider a theme from one of the pieces of art to which anyone is welcome.
