Rame Male Voice Choir’s Royal double

Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir is celebrating a unique Royal double. Having become the first men’s choir in Britain to be awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, they then joined three other Cornish choirs to perform before Prince Charles at the Royal Cornwall Show.

They joined members of Launceston, Pelynt, and Burraton choirs, forming a 70-strong group which marked his 70th birthday in front of TV cameras.

choir, and spoke to chairman Clive Brinkmann. “He came over, saw the badge, and I told him we had been awarded it the previous week,” said Clive. “He asked where we came from, and I told him Kingsand and Cawsand.”

The QAVS is the UK’s highest accolade for voluntary groups, and is considered the equivalent of the MBE. Inaugurated in 2002 to mark the anniversary of Her Majesty’s coronation, the QAVS honours were

announced in the London Gazette on June 2.

The choir was the only Cornish group among this year’s 250 UK recipients. The voluntary choir and its helpers have raised nearly £17,000 for cancer diagnosis in the past year.

Predictably they performed at concerts and sold cds, but choristers also swam in the sea on New Year’s Day, a local resident sold off the jewellery and records of his late wife (a cancer victim), while supporters raised more then £2000 from coffee mornings, selling everything from home made pasties to jewellery hand-crafted by wives and partners.

The choir was nominated by two Millbrook residents: Jean Knight and Chrissie Oldham, when the ladies discovered that the choristers, and their folk, sea shanty, and 60s rock ensemble, Halfway Harmony, had donated more than £250,000 to charity since they were founded in 1976.

Beneficiaries include schools and churches in their parish and in Torpoint, earthquake victims in Nepal, Rame Peninsula Beach Care, Coverack flood victims, British Legion, more than £30,000 to Cornwall Air Ambulance over the past six years, and disaster victims worldwide (17 Shelterboxes).

Mesothelioma, caused by inhaling asbestos dust, has claimed the lives of five choir members in recent years, and more than 460 in the Plymouth area in the past 20 years. Mesothelioma South West has consequently received several thousand pounds from Halfway Harmony.

All that is in addition to more than £90,000 raised by Rame’s participation in events run by the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs at London’s Royal Albert Hall and Plymouth Pavilions.

Choir chairman Clive Brinkmann paid tribute to the choir’s community opening hearts and wallets: “We are proud to receive this honour, and humbled by the remarkable generosity of the people of East Cornwall.

“In the best traditions of ‘one and all’, our own community has helped us raise nearly £17,000 in less than a year. That money is being used to fund state-of-the-art cancer

He insisted that thanks should also go to the Cornish Federation, many of whose member choirs held independent concerts, and to several women’s choirs, including Keltique (from Looe) and Torpoint Lady Singers, who joined them in boosting a fund which has helped spare Cornish residents round trips of up to 400 miles for the nearest available diagnosis, which was in Bristol.

Cornwall’s Lord Lieutenant, Colonel Edward Bolitho, will present the award at a community concert with details soon to be announced. “This is a great accolade, and recognition not only of your singing work, but also of the notable fund-raising you have carried out over so many years,” said Colonel Bolitho.

Cornwall Council has already honoured the choir, with a reception in Truro. There was significant media interest with coverage on both ITV South West and BBC Spotlight, and more than 11,000 hits and shares on Facebook alone.

Spotlight concluded their coverage with the choir playing out the programme singing Minnadhu Breaks, their iconic signature tune, written by Millbrook’s Pete Staniforth.

It has been used as soundtrack for the international award-winning film, Last Fisherman, featuring local fisherman Malcolm Baker. The oncology charity received £700 raised from the sale of a boat he renovated with youngsters in the film*.

Rame are in discussion with Derriford about future charity work, but Halfway Harmony have already launched their new 16-track cd, Home from the Sea, at Torpoint’s street market. Profits from that will go exclusively to Cornish charities.

This capped an outstanding and intense period for the choir. A recent six-day, fourconcert tour of Normandy and Brittany was a resounding success, paving the way for rekindling of twinning links with Porspoder where they were piped out of the arena by a Breton pipe band.

And the choir had two representatives at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party: chairman Brinkmann and press officer Doug Gillon.

A capacity audience enjoyed a novel evening with the Rame choir and the ‘Singing Allsorts’ from Sussex in Kingsand Community Hall on June 15. The concert in Millbrook Tanyard, postponed from June 23, will now be held on July 14. They are holding a 50p sale on June 30 (10am to 12noon) in Millbrook Scout Hall, and a coffee morning at The Cornerstone Church, Torpoint, on July 7 (9.30am to 11.30am). *If you have a wooden boat capable of restoration, you could support good causes by donating it. Baker has renovated 14 wooden boats with groups of disadvantaged youngsters in recent years, and is looking for one suitable for their next project. Bingo! Fund raising evening to convert air raid shelter into a community space is a big success

Fourlanesend Community Primary School group, Project 500 and Families and Schools Working Together (FAST), held a bingo evening at the school to raise funds to develop an existing air raid shelter into a music studio for school and community use.

It is hoped that the development will create a community space and encourage more children to take part in musical activities.

The evening was a great success with over 60 young people and family members attending, raising £350. Prizes were provided by the young people who were all asked to bring two items of store cupboard

food, which were made into hampers.

Tim Newcombe, Project 500 co-ordinator said: “Wow! How lucky we all are. We raised a huge £350 and we could not have done this without each and everyone of our fantastic school and community’s input”.

He added: “After completing the FAST programme the parents are given £500 as a group towards activities such as training, days out, some schools did yoga and dancing lessons, but as a collective it quickly became apparent we all wanted not only our children and ourselves to benefit, but also our community.”

The idea is to convert the air raid shelter into a music/video editing suite with a

studio and a room for private music tutors to teach everyone, and for the children and others in the community to have the opportunities to make and edit their own videos. So far they\ have been really lucky and had lots of musical instruments donated by ‘music for all’, including three of the 3/4 size electric guitars for the ‘Hank Marvin TV advert’.

Becky Lingard, community development manager for Community Health Around Torpoint (CHAT), called the numbers on the evening and said: “CHAT is always happy to help in the community and this was a lovely evening with a great feel. It was a total pleasure and we were pleased to be asked”.

• • • Kitchens • Bedrooms • Bathrooms • • • The Friends of Thanckes Park has been a dormant community group for some years, but it is back with a new committee and new enthusiasm.

The Friends have already been successful in so many things and they have lots of plans for the future which they hope the community will want to get involved in.

An Easter Egg hunt supported by the local Sainsbury’s raised £491 and 150 children enjoyed hunting round the park for Torpoint Rocks.

The group has also organised two clean up events, where volunteers have managed to find the borders of the play park, and they have been painting benches too! The third project day in June saw the installation of the flower boat, clearing some further area around the tennis courts, sowing a wild meadow and cutting the grass in the playground.

As a community the group raised £580 through Crowd Funding, with Cornwall Council then pledging £500 of match funding through their seed project. The grand total of more than £1000 will enable the group to put nature back into Thanckes Park.

The Friends are working hard to acquire new play equipment, with the first phase involving the installation of sensory boards and trail equipment. Part of the funding has already been obtained, boosted by a generous donation of £500 from Citybus. Once this equipment has been installed applications for bigger funds will be made to replace the older equipment, which it is hoped can then be distributed around other parks in the town.

The Friends next big day is the Field Day on the July 7. Field Days celebrate the Field in Trust status which protects the green space for future generations. The event will encourage local residents to try taster sessions of activities already offered in the community, but out in the park. Watch the group’s Facebook page and local press for full timetable of events.

None of this would be possible without the help and support of the local council and the people who already volunteer their time to help us.

We have all been enjoying the lovely sunny weather having lunch on the garden patio and during the afternoon a glass of sherry or two.

Improving social action in Torpoint

Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum is working in partnership with CHAT – Community Action Around Torpoint – to help develop new community-based activities in the area.

Cornwall VSF recognises that social action is an integral part of any community initiative that actually has a chance of both achieving and sustaining the change they seek.

Grassroots initiatives always stand a greater chance of making an impact than top-down campaigns imposed on local areas, so are working hard to make this the right kind of project.

In order to encourage and facilitate this social action in Torpoint to benefit the local area, Cornwall VSF and CHAT will be hosting a workshop on July 4. Anyone who carries out voluntary work in the Torpoint area is welcome to attend, together with public sector staff, faith groups, and other interested organisations and individuals.

The workshop will explore the issues that are important for this area, and investigate solutions, with an ultimate aim of growing local capacity to act. Cornwall VSF will work with local providers as equals, and as a facilitator.

The outcomes of this workshop will feed into discussions Cornwall VSF is having with CHAT to establish which activities can be accommodated within existing projects, and look into potential new funding to enable new activities to be introduced.

Art exhibition in Kingsand The Rame Peninsula Art Exhibtion is a local art show which has been running for over 20 years.

Over the years it has been a great success with monies raised going to local causes. Many local artists show their work together with a few professionals. The exhibition features a varied selection of paintings, prints and cards – all for purchase.

The exhibtion takes place between Friday August 10 until Sunday August 12 in the Kingsand Community Hall, Kingsand from 11am until 6pm (Sunday 4pm). Entry is free.

There is also held a very popular Preview Evening at 7pm on August 9 with a free glass of bubbly. Entry for this event is £5. Everyone is welcome.

A sailor now based at HMS Raleigh has been recognised as the Royal Navy’s top Physical Trainer thanks to his work on board HMS Monmouth.

Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Aaron Squance was presented with the Tony Trywhitt-Bettridge trophy by Vice Admiral Tony Radakin, Second Sea Lord and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, who was visiting HMS Raleigh for the first time since taking up his new appointment.

The Plymouth sailor was a member of HMS Monmouth’s Ship’s Company for a nine-month deployment, which saw the Type 23 frigate patrolling the Middle East on operations.

The 31-year-old was selected for the award for his drive, determination and dedication which was a key contribution to the morale and wellbeing of HMS Monmouth’s Ship’s Company allowing them to retain focus whilst on operations.

During 17 port visits to 13 different countries LPT Squance arranged 23 different fixtures for the Ship’s football, rugby and cricket teams. He also provided 15 days of Adventurous Training giving 12 personnel each day the opportunity to participate.

His citation for the award reads: “LPT Squance has shown enthusiasm and boundless energy on every day of deployed operations. He has established himself at the forefront of a plethora of whole ship management activities whilst enriching life on board the Ship for every member of the Ship’s Company; whether through healthy living, sport, Adventurous Training, and entertainment or simply as a crutch to those struggling with time away.”

LPT Squance said: “Over the long arduous deployment there was plenty of opportunity to balance out the difficult times with some good memories. The highlight for me was the high interest from the Ship’s Company in the visit to Tsavo East Safari in Mombasa, Kenya. The planning and the admin behind the visit was difficult but to see 150 of the Ship’s Company happy, full of smiles and having completed a once in a lifetime opportunity was great. I also ensured HMS Monmouth entered seven Fleet competitions, running and rowing relay events, when all ships and submarines compete against one another for the trophies. HMS Monmouth won six trophies and we were runners-up for the seventh.”

LPT Squance joined the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineering Mechanic in 2006, but achieved his long-term ambition to become a Leading Physical Trainer three years ago.

Prior to becoming a physical trainer LPT Squance served on board HMS Ocean, firstly as an engineer and then as a Leading Engineering Technician. There he was a member of a department made up of over 40 personnel but he admits being assigned to HMS Monmouth as a Leading Physical Trainer, where he is the subject matter expert in a single billet, was quite nerve-racking.

Accepting the award LPT Squance said: “It feels good to have recognition for all my hard work during the deployment.

In my 12 years of service I believe the Physical Training specialisation is the most professional in the Royal Navy and really hard-working. Everyone is very ambitious, and everyone is continually trying to better themselves to be the best. I’m really proud as I was also awarded a Joint Commander’s Commendation, so both of the achievements Opening of the exhibition are massive.”

Jade sets her sights on the Miss England title A young Torpoint woman is bidding to be crowned Miss England - following in the footsteps of Charlotte Holmes who went on to become a top model and TV presenter.

Jade Rice-Alor, who is 22, said: “I had always considered entering for Miss England after seeing Charlotte go on to win and how successful she’s been I thought it was definitely something I wanted to take part in - but I never really had the confidence to do so.

“Then earlier this year I saw an advert for Miss England auditions and just on impulse I applied without thinking anything of it.

“A couple of weeks later I received an e-mail to say that I’d made it into the final 20 of Miss South West - I couldn’t believe I had made it that far.”

The finals took place at Pryzm in Plymouth in May and Jade had to participate in a catwalk round, an interview round, a talent round and a public popularity vote.

Jade, who works as a lettings negotiator for Ideal Homes & Lettings said: “On the evening I said to myself I would just enjoy the experience - it was an achievement in itself just to be there in the final.

“So you can imagine my shock when I was announced not only as Miss South West, but also Miss Popularity. I was overwhelmed.”

Winning means that Jade will be taking part in the Miss England finals later this year. The event will be in two parts - the first part will be in Birmingham

in July and will involve a series of different rounds including sports, talent and hair.

The second part of the competition will be in September in Nottingham when Jade will be one of 50 girls bidding to become Miss England.

As part of the build up to the finals, Jade is fund raising for the Miss England charity Beauty With A Purpose - in aid of disadvantaged children all over the world.

She is also raising money for a local charity Luna’s Fund.

She has already raised over £1000 from a quiz night at Torpoint Football Club along with bucket collections in local pubs and clubs. She is busy organising other events in the coming months including a car boot sale at the football club on July 15 and fun days in Torpoint on August 4 and Millbrook on August 11.

Jade said: “I’m so grateful for all the support I have received so far from local people and businesses especially Geek in Torpoint who are my sponsors for the competition.

“I am so excited for my year as Miss South West and also to be part of Miss England 2018. Often people see pageants as bikini beauty contests. I have learnt that they are so much more than this it’s about being able to be a positive role model in today’s society - as well as being beautiful inside and out.”

The Great British Summer Garden Fete on Sunday, July 22 from 10.30 am to 4pm, will be staged at the bottom of the park near the Orangery. Mount Edgcumbe provides a unique setting for a really memorable day out. Entry to the fete costs just £3, under 16s free. Parking charges apply in all car parks at this venue.

What a great day for Torpoint, with Fore Street closed to traffic for the first street market in modern times. The weather behaved and the sun shone throughout the day and hundreds of people turned out to enjoy the occasion.

Stalls were spread all the way down the street and catered for all with cake stands, drinks of every type and style from the Standard pub and the Trailer Maid mobile bar. Mario’s plant stall – a new venture - was almost sold out by lunchtime, Various locally made craft stalls were doing very well, although the Slimming World stall had a bit of a job on with all the great food available. They said it was well worth being there – even having two fish and chip venues to contend with.

Town Crier Clive O’Shaughnessy along with the main event organiser Joyce Walsh opened the event at 10am and they were then followed by the Half Way Harmony Choir entertaining after the opening.

Joyce was overwhelmed with the attendance and support from locals and visitors and of course stall holders and shops that opened. Hopefully from this first event there will be lots more to follow. Well done to all.

Message from the Mayor Lambert Kiese As you will have seen on the centre pages of this issue, Fore Street hosted a fabulous Street Market with over 40 stalls on May 27.

It was a resounding success attended by lots of people.

Many stall holders were delighted with the turnover, with Fore Street traders also experiencing a boom in sales.

The bunting helped to bring some colour and vibrancy to the shopping area and was in place for the Royal Wedding celebrations too. My sincere thanks once again to all involved in making this project happen.

After extensive refurbishment by SR Huggins Builders Service, the old Torpoint Community Health Centre is now office space and renamed Discovery Court; it’s pleasing to see this building back in use.

I am pleased to advise the Public Conveniences at Bénodet Park are now in full working order.

With the wonderful lighter evenings, it is disappointing to note some minor anti-social issues have occurred around the town, including fires being lit in Thanckes Park.

Our Police Neighbourhood Beat Manager, PC Steve Wilson attended the recent Town Council Meeting and provided details of how these matters are being addressed and continues to encourage any concerns are reported by members of the public. ROYAL NAVY SAILORS COMPETE IN CHARITY BOXING EVENT

Two Royal Navy sailors from HMS Raleigh have made their debuts in the boxing ring to raise money for charity.

Chief Petty Officers (CPOs) Joel Cramoysan and Dave Slater, who both joined the Royal Navy in 2003, took part in the Ultra White Collar (UWC) boxing event, held at the Guildhall in Plymouth.

A unique opportunity for people with no boxing background, the event allows competitors to experience the wonderful world of boxing and get into shape, in a safe and enjoyable environment while raising money for Cancer Research UK. The submariners were both looking for a new challenge and wanted to test themselves mentally and physically, while supporting a great cause.

CPOs Cramoysan and Slater started their training eight weeks prior to the event and have been lucky enough to use the Boxing Camp completely free at Masters Academy Plymouth.

With two training sessions a week to

get them ready and two coaches who slowly introduced them to sparring, the two men were well prepared for their first fight.

They were among 23 bouts of three times two minute rounds on the evening’s card. CPO Cramoysan drew his fight, while despite his best efforts CPO Slater missed out on victory.

CPO Cramoysan, aged 33, said: “We can never do enough to raise money and awareness. UWC have been running these events since 2010 and have so far raised £13m for Cancer Research. With our event we managed to raise over £13k and we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved.”

Both were happy to have competed for a great cause while the crowd supporting them added to the experience.

CPO Slater, aged 31, said: “It was amazing. We are going to carry on with the training every Monday and I’m thinking of signing up for another event.”

Tamar sailing barge has new sails thanks to Cotehele volunteer

A substantial legacy from a former National Trust volunteer has enabled Cotehele to commission new sails for Shamrock, one of two only surviving Tamar sailing barges. The 119 year old vessel has been moored at Cotehele Quay since the mid-1970s and is currently undergoing major restoration.

The legator, Lawrence Brodley, and his wife Janet were both room guides at Cotehele. Lawrence was especially interested in the history of the estate and was well-known and liked by the shipwrights working on Shamrock down at the quay. Mrs Brodley visited Shamrock again recently to take official delivery of the new sails.

Constructed by Patrick Selman of Gaff Sails adopting many of the traditional techniques used by the original sailmakers working in 1899, the sails have been handcut, roped and stitched so will look the part.

However, being made from modern materials, they are around a third of the weight of traditional sails and, therefore are safer and easier for the crew to work with.

They’re also more durable and weather-proof, so will serve Shamrock for many years to come.

“When the restoration work is complete we plan to take Shamrock out to Plymouth Sound for regular day trips,” said Joe Lawrence, project manager. “She needs to be worked and taken into seawater to preserve her – the salt protects the wood in the hull - and having these modern sails means the crew can do this more safely and easily.”

“Lawrence would be absolutely thrilled to bits with these sails,” said Janet Brodley, adding that this was the perfect project for her husband’s legacy to fund because of his keen interest in sailing.

Shamrock is the last Tamar sailing barge ever made.

She was built in 1899 and has spent her life in Cornwall and on the Tamar.

Over the years she’s been used to transport fertilizer and quarried stone and been a diving tender. She even played a role in the First World War, when she transported shells from Canadian ammunition ships which were moored in Plymouth Sound back to Ocean Quay.

By the time The National Trust and National Maritime Museum bought Shamrock in 1974 she was almost derelict. They worked together using traditional materials and techniques to restore Shamrock and she became a permanent resident at Cotehele Quay.

Now she is fully under National Trust care and through the course of her regular maintenance it became apparent that she needed more extensive restoration work and a major project to protect and conserve this local lady began.

Shaune Blight, shipwright and foreman at Shamrock says, ‘We were delighted to receive this gift for Cotehele.

It’s given a big boost to the restoration project and we really appreciate it.’

The Shamrock restoration project relies on funding to enable the work, so this gift will allow the team to make a great step forward with its plans.

Millbrook Surgery Millbrook Surgery remained closed as the Advertiser went to press as a result of vandalism and threats to staff.

The surgery closed on June 15 with a notice on the Rame Group Practice website reading: “We are very sorry but the surgery will be closed temporarily due to a number of targeted incidents against the practice and practice staff. We are working with the police on the matter and hope to re-open soon.”

The Advertiser understands that urgent security measures are being planned to protect the premises and staff and that it will possibly re-open before the end of June.

Millbrook Parish Council discussed the situation at their June meeting and supported the action of the Practice in temporarily closing the surgery.

Rame Gig Club success at Looe Regatta Rame Gig Club celebrated with three first places and third place overall at Looe Regatta in June.

Members young and older had a great day of racing and are really enjoying the regatta season.

Also in June the club went to Caradon where two of the club’s Under 18 rowers, Tegan and Adam were chosen by the Cornwall Rowing Committee to be members of the Under 18 crew, competing in the Tribute County Championships.

All the Cornish rowers did the county proud. They won all six categories and

therefore the championship.

Alongside the County Championship Caradon held the Mixed Championships.

Rame’s Under 15s and Under 18s both claimed second places in their races with the supervet crew coming fifth in theirs.

Rame Gig Club will be holding their annual Regatta on Saturday July 21. Gigs will come from all over the South West for the racing.

There will also be a BBQ, hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes etc, throughout the day. In the evening there will be a bar and live music. Go along and join the club

for a great day on and off the water.

This year the club are encouraging everyone to bring their own re-usable mugs and bottles. There will be discounts, raffle entry etc for those rowers/supporters who do so.

The Cornwall Rowing Association will be holding their Flash/Skiff boat Regatta at Cawsand on Saturday July 28. There is sure to be lots of fun on and off the water so please come along and cheer the teams on.

Taxing issues Over the past couple of years many things have been deemed as leading news stories.

But some have come to the surface and have been in the news consistently. One, of course, is Brexit (we are probably all fed up with hearing about it). Others include the housing crisis and the NHS. But also, the subject of tax avoidance continues to hit our news headlines as it appears that one large company after another and one celebrity after another are named for finding a loophole to avoid paying tax.

So, considering how little Jesus had to say about EU membership or the housing crisis, it’s great to hear him talking directly about our front page news. Should we or should we not pay taxes? “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,” he says; “and to God the things that are God’s”.

Does this help us to see how Jesus would have handled the issues that have been raised by the revelations of tax avoidance by so many wealthy people? Probably not, because the political world of Jesus was too different from ours. But, if we want a word from Jesus to guide us on taxation maybe we should turn to,

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. What I would have others do, speaking personally, is to pay their fair share into our communal pot, rather than finding ways and loopholes that enable them to get out of it – so that there is enough funding for the NHS, housing, education, etc.

This raises the question, do I do this unto others myself? Do I pay the plumber cash because he says he can do the job a little cheaper? Do I pay half fare on the train for my son because he only looks fifteen? Do I claim benefit because it is available rather than because I need it. Just how many of us contribute all we might and take as little as we can?

Personal morality and politics may be different things, but surely we have room for improvement in both. We need to recognise how far short we are from perfect fairness, generosity and public spirit and how unwilling we are to give all that we might. If we all gave all that we might, the world would be a different place. Meanwhile, it would be good to have a tax system that didn’t allow people to seek out ways to avoid giving Caesar what is his.

Beach clean challenge Cleaning more beaches could tip the balance when it comes to stopping the plastic tide, according to the Marine Conservation Society.

There’s no silver bullet when it comes to the UK’s beach litter problem, but, says the charity behind this year’s 25th Great British Beach Clean, there’s an opportunity to become part of the solution. The Marine Conservation Society needs volunteers to take part in clean-ups nationwide, and is especially looking for individuals willing to lead a clean themselves over the weekend of September 14 to 17, with the charity’s support.

During last year’s Great British Beach Clean, just under 7,000 volunteers cleaned 339 beaches and picked up over 255,000 pieces of litter – a 10% rise in the amount of rubbish on UK beaches compared to 2016.

Now, 25 years after the first mass beach cleaning event, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) says the UK stands on the cusp of helping make its silver anniversary event the biggest ever.

Plastic pollution in our seas and the crisis the oceans face are no longer under the radar – industry, individuals and governments know that we have to act now to take the momentum started by MCS in 1994 when the charity began collecting beach litter data to fresh heights. The momentum has been taken to another level over the last 12 months by Blue Planet II, Sky Ocean Rescue and MCS’s own #STOPtheplastictide campaign.

“Cleaning 339 individual beaches last year was a fabulous achievement by our volunteers,” says Lizzie Prior, MCS Beach and River Clean Officer. “But we know that it’s only the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds of beaches around our coasts that have never been cleaned and surveyed – and it’s the collection of this data that is so important to getting even more positive changes implemented than have already been achieved in the last year or so.”

MCS volunteers have cleaned thousands of UK beaches over the last 24 years. From the Hebrides to Cornwall, Gwynedd to Kent, the charity has recorded just about every bit of rubbish its volunteers have picked up, and used that information to create a sea of change for our oceans. Reducing carrier bag numbers, a movement to stop plastic straws being handed out in their thousands, clearer labelling on wet wipes and proposed deposit return systems – all have been made to happen thanks to volunteer beach cleaners.

The single-use plastic carrier bag charge across all the home nations has resulted in a 28% drop in the number of bags found on UK beaches. Microbeads in personal care products have been banned in the UK and manufacturers and retailers have made wet wipe labelling clearer, and cut out their plastic content. High Street bars, and restaurants and smaller independents have banned plastic straws in their hundreds. There’s a growing momentum to see a tax on plastic ‘on the go’ items, like lids, stirrers and cutlery.

The 2018 Great British Beach Clean is the second one to be sponsored by Waitrose. In the last year the supermarket has introduced more easily recyclable sandwich packets, banned the sale of plastic straws in store from September and stopped giving them out in their cafés and are removing all single-use takeaway coffee cups by the autumn, saving up to 52 million cups annually potentially reaching our seas.

Less litter on UK beaches will save the lives of some of our best loved marine wildlife, protect our kids building sand castles and show the world what the great British seaside really looks like beneath its escalating mountain of rubbish.

Shocking cost of plastic pollution Claire Wallerstein, founder of Rame Peninsula Beach Care was the guest speaker at the recent meeting of the Torpoint Wives Group.

Claire was welcomed by secretary Elaine Searle and she spoke on what is at the moment a global concern about the huge amount of plastic waste polluting the world’s oceans.

Claire said the purpose of the group, manned by volunteers is to clean local beaches, to raise more awareness of marine plastic pollution and to try and minimise the damage done to marine environment.

Members were shocked to see pictures of grey seals, 300 in Cornwall, where some of them have been injured or died with plastic wound around their necks. There were also images of birds whose beaks had been entangled and seals becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets and tackles.

Huge containers washed overboard from ships have deposited plastic into the sea. Claire said that every day plastic is brought onto local beaches on the tides, some of which are the millions of pieces of Lego when the ship carrying them was sunk.

She said that Tregantle Beach is one of the worst.

Volunteers get down on their hands and knees with dustpan and brushes, painstakingly sweeping up the small pellets. Rob Arnold has invented a machine which sieves them out, but it is still a laborious task.

800 tons of waste has been collected by the group over the past 12 months. Some plastic has been made into sculptures by artists to bring the scale of pollution to a wider population.
