Public meeting to discuss shock closure news

Millbrook Post Office: action time

Millbrook residents were expected to turn out in force at a public meeting to discuss the closure of the Post Office in the village.

The meeting, co-hosted by Millbrook Parish Council and the Peninsula Trust, was taking place at the Millbrook Methodist Hall as the Advertiser went to press.

In the wake of the announcement that the Post Office in the Premier Shop is to close on January 16, the Parish Council and the Peninsula Trust have been working hard to find a solution to the problem.

A Peninsula Trust spokesman said: “We feel strongly that this important service should be retained in our village.”

Meetings have taken place with the Post Office to discuss the options available and a number of priorities identified.

The first is to organise an outreach service in a suitable location, to provide an interim basic service over limited hours.

In the meantime efforts would continue to find a new retailer or community organisation to take over the service in a suitable location.

Also seen as a priority is to make contingency plans to help the most vulnerable local people, such as the elderly. This may include organising a mini bus service to the nearest Post Office, such as Kingsand.

The Peninsula Trust is looking at the possibility of running a Post Office, but due to the structure of the organisation they are not ideally placed to take on the responsibility.

However, if no other option can be found then they will certainly consider this because of the importance of retaining the service in the village.

It has been reported that the owners of the Premier Store had experienced ‘major issues’ with Post Office Limited, forcing them reluctantly to take the decision to close the post office counter in the shop.

Threat to GP Surgery

Villagers in Millbrook have also been shocked by the news that the building housing the Rame Group Practice is to be put up for sale.

In a statement the Rame Group Practice said: “As you will know, we rent the Millbrook Surgery premises. The landlord has now informed us that he wishes to sell the building on the open market, so you may see a ‘For sale’ sign outside in the coming days.

“GP care will continue to be provided from the building for as long as possible, but clearly we have to look at alternatives, given that both NHS England and the Rame Group Practice remain absolutely committed to providing GP care in the Rame peninsula.

“That means other premises will be found if the Rame Group Practice is unable to continue providing care from Millbrook Surgery.

“In some circumstances the NHS can make an offer to purchase a building and lease it back to the practice. However, as we are responsible for using public money, we must ensure that the purchase is only considered at market value.

“NHS England will explore this option with the landlord, even while the building is advertised for sale on the open market.

Launch of Rame Business Hub is a big success - date for next breakfast meeting announced A local Trust is celebrating the successful launch of the Rame Business Hub in November with a very well attended Business Breakfast in Millbrook.

The Peninsula Trust are wasting no time in following up the event with another Business Breakfast for the local businesses on the Rame Peninsula on Friday January 19 at Millbrook Village Hall.

Jo Bennetts, programme coordinator said: “We are absolutely thrilled at the response to the Business Breakfast in November.

The turn out was excellent, showing that there is a genuine need for a local business network on the Rame Peninsula.

“As a direct result of the event we have already linked more than a dozen new start-up and existing small businesses to business support services via our partners, The Growth Hub Cornwall, who have been delighted by the response.

“Drop-in clinics at the Scout Hall in Millbrook over the next couple of months with the Growth Hub’s South-East Cornwall representative Richard Scutt are already filling up. In fact demand is so high that they are having to bring in extra staff to be available alongside Richard, to ensure that everyone that drops by will be seen!’

A local small business owner, said: “I called Richard from The Growth Hub and arranged to meet him at Maker to discuss my business ideas.

“Richard was really supportive and has suggested various funding and training options that would be suitable for me. I’m feeling really inspired and so excited to develop my business ideas in 2018.”

Meanwhile there was some good news for villagers.

Millbrook will be keeping it’s Natwest mobile bank, despite the recent announcement by RBS of scores of bank branch closures across the country. The mobile bank calls every Tuesday between 11.30am and 12 noon on the Quay and can be used by both NatWest and RBS customers.

One local resident commented: “In light of the closure of the Post Office, the mobile bank will be even more important now.”

Twin sisters Rosie and Poppy Northcott are celebrating a remarkable year of sporting success.

The identical twins, who attend Millbrook Primary School, have just turned 11 - but they have already achieved stunning success in athletics and cross country.

They both brought back four Gold Medals at a Young Athletes Open competition in North Devon earlier this year. Poppy won the both the 75 metre and 600 metre sprints and also the howler javelin.

Meanwhile her sister Rosie triumphed in the 150 metres sprint and hurdles and long jump. They both then crowned an amazing day by helping their relay team into the Gold Medal place.

They also came first and second in the Exeter Pentathlon event and have continued this success throughout the year.

Both Poppy and Rosie are members of the City of Plymouth Athletics Club and train regularly at Brickfields.

Poppy has already written her name in the club’s record book as the Under 11 Girls Record holder in the 200 metres, 600 metres and 800 metres.

The records had remained unbeaten for 10 years - until Poppy’s performances.

She has also broken a Cornwall record.

Not to be outdone, Rosie has set several personal bests in the long jump - achieving 3 metres 92 cms - and the high jump at 1 metre 10 cms.

Poppy and Rosie Northcott - athletics super stars of the future Poppy continued her success with victory in the opening 2017/18 Westward Cross Country League meeting at Stover. She won the under 11 girls race in a time of 5.36 minutes and even finished fourth overall in the joint boys and girls race.

As if their athletics prowess is not enough, they are both keen rugby and netball players and have won many matches and leagues at Millbrook Primary School.

They could be Cornwall’s answer to the Brownlee brothers who have literally conquered the world in triathlon events!

Gary Farrar organised this year’s Christmas lighting in the villages, assisted by Don Seymour and Jack Dyer, so the three were asked to formally switch on the lights.

After the ‘switch on,’ a snow machine entertained the young children.

Then, everyone returned into the Community Hall for mince pies, and mulled wine from Sir John Gray’s ancient recipe.

Tree-mendous effort and a special celebration for Bill Torcare’s beautifully decorated Christmas tree was duly displayed at St James, Church in readiness for Torpoint’s Christmas Tree Festival for the two week period from November 27.

Residents had been working hard painting and decorating pine cones and making pom poms for the tree as well as some contributions from very talented family members.

Residents from each of Torcare’s three homes were taken to the Christmas Tree Festival on afternoons during the two

week event to view the spectacular show of trees, lights and Christmas festivities.

One particular afternoon the organist was playing Christmas carols while three of the residents sat and enjoyed the magical atmosphere.

William ‘Bill’ Cree, who is resident at Porte Rouge is pictured with his daughter Karen celebrating his 80th birthday this month, after a party with his friends where Poslips played and everyone sang and danced.

The celebrations continued at Wheelers in Torpoint where family and friends from Scotland celebrated with Bill to the sounds of a Bagpipe Band.

The Torpoint Lady Singers, Tony and Ken entertaining duo, The Ferryboat Singers, Wendy J. Bassett, the local Brownies and local school children are but a few of those who took a turn in entertaining the residents within Torcare’s three homes.

The pantomime ‘Wizard of Oz’ kicked off the proceedings and friends and family of Torcare were welcomed to the sherry and mince pie afternoon at the Nursing Home on Thursday December 14.

Torcare would like to wish all residents, their families and friends and all the staff a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Golden moment A couple who first met at a café in Torpoint have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Michael and Delia Cook were congratulated by the Mayor and Mayoress of Torpoint Coun Lambert and Maureen Keise.

The couple have two children – Jane and Mark – four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, having been married on December 2 1967.

Michael was born and raised in Plymouth and joined Courage Breweries after leaving Burrington Comprehensive at the age of 15. He then went to Merchant Seaman Training School at the age of 16, joining his first ship on his 17th birthday. He spent more than a decade in the Merchant Navy.

Delia, who was the youngest of six children, grew up in Narkurs, near Downderry and went to Deviock School. She worked at Carter’s farm and nursery after leaving school and having her family.

The couple ran pubs in the area for about 10 years, including the Rising Sun in Kingsand and the Railway Inn at Saltash.

They celebrated with family and friends at an anniversary party at Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club on December 9. “It was a wonderful party,” said Delia.

Torpoint Wives Group had looked forward to their November meeting when Eve Oates welcomed Debbie Shenton and her enthusiastic band of helpers to encourage members to create their own Christmas cards.

Merriment and laughter were the key words to what followed. Glue, sequins, glitter and ribbons were transformed into Christmas cards with artistry and talent given full rein.

As a result 20 very individual cards emerged which were displayed in Cornerstone Church for members to admire each other’s efforts. The evening was so enjoyable that Debbie and her helpers have been booked to return next year.

Eve gave the vote of thanks and the group went on to enjoy the Christmas lunch on Wednesday December 6 organised by Bernice Giles.

Best of local creative talent on display at Torpoint Arts Festival Torpoint Arts Festival really showed the amount of talent that there is in the area.

Photography, art, guitars, woodwork, sculptures and embroidery were all on display. There was even a model of the Torpoint Ferry.

It was a great showcase and there was plenty of opportunity to meet the artists and craftsmen.

Local artist Mandy Smith provided a real life painting session with the subject of the painting local singer Jack Bartlett being present.

There was also some amazing work from the Torpoint Community College, Torpoint Infant and Nursery School and Carbeile Junior School.

Music was provided by the Wreckers Morris while the Coppola School of Performing Art treated the audience to some delightful performances from the younger children.

It was a day of fun, enjoyment and creativity and a celebration of the talent that Torpoint has to offer.

A good community minded effort by various local organisations all coming together laid on something for everyone.

From an innovative arrival of Santa Claus on a rickshaw from the Lions to traditional carol singing from school choirs, dance troupes to a full samba band all there to entertain an enthusiastic and grateful crowd.

In the run up to the main switch on event by Torpoint’s Citizen of the Year, Chris Still, numerous shops had taken part in a best dressed window display competition which was won by The Emporium.

All in all a brilliant and very successful start to the Festive Season.

Lions presented with a bumper cheque by Co-op in Torpoint

Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions were presented a cheque for more than £1,440 by the Co-op in Torpoint last month.

The Co-op Local Community Fund has enabled charities and other organisations to benefit through its local causes programme. As a member, every time a customer has shopped at Torpoint, 1% of what was spent on selected ownbrand products and services has gone to the local community fund, along with money raised from shopping bags sales.

Members have then chosen to support one of the named local causes. Our local Lions Club was one of the designated local causes.

The Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions will be ploughing the money back into the local area by improving the garden on Harvey Street opposite the old Fire Station. This will include the thinning out of the trees and putting in place a new bench. An enormous thank you goes to both the Co-Op in Torpoint along with all its members.

The Torpoint Skittles Club hosted the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club at a very enjoyable evening of indoor skittles, beer and food recently.

The Lions Club came a creditable second in the match but wiped the board with their raffle prizes!

Children and staff at Jack & Jill’s Childcare in Torpoint created their own winter wonderland with a milk bottle ‘igloo’ for the children to play in.

The igloo was created with the support from local businesses helping with the collection of milk bottles. The organisations involved were Trewithen Dairy, Little Brothers and Hearts Café. Torpoint Electrical provided a large box for the base.

The bottles were also saved by families and friends at home and they took them to Jack & Jill’s on a daily basis.

Louise Moulton, manager at Jack & Jill’s, said: “The children are enjoying playing in it and have said it’s amazing.”

Christmas and New Year waste collection arrangements There will be no rubbish, clinical waste, recycling or garden waste collections on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. What do you want?

One of the four ‘noble truths’ of Buddhism is that suffering is caused by craving. Wanting things or stuff to happen for us. Its advice is that rather than constantly struggling to get what we want, we try to modify our wanting.

Wanting things, Buddha declared, deprives us of contentment and happiness I am writing this three weeks before Christmas.

A time when people are constantly asked “what do you want for Christmas?” Ironic really as we celebrate the birth of a child who forsook his material needs.

Christmas is a time when this wanting things is really exploited by sales people and no sooner is it over and the January Sales begin tempting us with more bargains. “Up to 70% discount!!”

A young student recalls being challenged by her English Lecturer with the question “Are you content?”

“Yes I think I am” she replied, after some moments thought.

“Well,” responded the lecturer, “what is your purpose for living?!”

A provocative response presumably intended to shake his students out of complacency and to think about life and existence; to consider what life was for; to understand and recognise our personal desires and wants.

I suspect that if you stopped most people in the street at any time and asked them what they wanted they would have an answer. A new car or kitchen, a bigger house, a holiday in the sun.

Most of us have dreams, desires or wants of some sort all the time and as each dream is either

realised, or finally recognised as being beyond reach, we move onto something else.

I have had the good fortune to have been able to travel. Observing the way so many people in our world have to live, the lack of facilities and opportunities made me much more sensitive to the over indulgence and over consumption we see at Christmas times in this country.

For the people of Nepal for instance, I suspect hopes would be for a job, a good harvest, a goat, running water nearer to the home. The wants for them would be about survival. Getting through the day.

Perhaps now, at the beginning of a new year, it is a good time to recognise this constant yearning many of us have. It can be a rewarding exercise to sit quietly, look deeply into ourselves and ask, “What do I truly want?” “What do I love, truly love?” “Is there anything that I would truly sacrifice my life for?” “Am I content and if not what would make me content?”

St Augustine prayed “Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being: You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

On Sunday January 28 there will be a united service in which members of all the churches in the area come together to worship together. It is an uplifting experience to meet with so many other Christians. You are all very welcome to join us. This year the service will take place at St James Church, Torpoint at 10 am.

Busy times for Torpoint Lady Singers

The Earl and Countess of Mount Edgcumbe officially opened the railway and model society that bears their name.

The new Mount Edgcumbe Railway and Model Society has been given access to the old sawmill to house a variety of layouts from 00 gauge to G scale and exhibits of model boats and other model activities.

The society is open to anyone with an interest in model railways or modelling in general.

The exhibition in the sawmill was open to the public during the Mount Edgcumbe Christmas Fair on December 9 and 10.

The society also runs, during the spring and summer months, a five inch gauge layout in the grounds of Mount Edgcumbe.

2018 will see a significant change and improvement to the operation of this layout that includes electric and steam locomotives.

New home for railway and model society is officially opened

The Torpoint Lady Singers joyfully fulfilled many engagements in the festive season, which meant a merry ending to the choir’s 30th anniversary year.

The Looe Monkey Sanctuary was an unusual first-time venture for the Singers and a very warm welcome was extended to them by the staff.

While the Ladies were singing a variety of Christmas music and traditional carols the monkeys were very well behaved.

The Torpoint Lady Singers were conducted by musical director Sylvia Fraser, and accompanist Sue Westwell A small group of singers accompanied by Sylvia sang at the Christmas Tree Festival at St James Church, Torpoint, appreciating the 50 sparkling trees around the church.

Torpoint Lady Singers shared a coffee morning with the Arthritis Research ladies, at Cornerstone Church, which proved a success with home-cakes, bric-a-brac and books bought by happy shoppers while listening to the Christmas music.

A small group of singers entertained at Porte Rouge residential home where everyone joined in enthusiastically with the traditional carols and jolly Christmas music.

A few days later and the full choir entertained at Mount Edgcumbe House standing on the grand staircase and marvelling at the giant Christmas tree below.
