‘Outreach’ service introduced in January

Millbrook PO: Trust steps in

The local community in Millbrook is celebrating after a partial saving of their Post Office was agreed.

The community were given the news in midNovember that the Premier Stores in Millbrook were to close the Post Office on January 16, potentially leaving the ‘largest village in Cornwall’ with no Post Office or bank. No suitable retail business could be found to take the service on.

Responding to concerns from the community for something to be done to save the Post Office service, the Peninsula Trust, a local community organisation, immediately met with Millbrook Parish Council to discuss the impact and choices for the village.

A public meeting was held to discuss the options available, and to make a plan for the future provision for Millbrook.

Over the Christmas holiday period, the Trust and Parish Council worked hard to secure an Outreach Post Office at the Rame Centre in Millbrook.

Jane Riggs, project co-ordinator said: “We met with the Post Office representative in late December who

provided us with information on the various options available, finally deciding that an outreach service provided by Gary Walters from Menheniot Post Office would be our best immediate option.

“We would like to thank Millbrook residents, Millbrook Parish Council and the Post Office for their continued support.”

The Outreach service started on January 19 at the Rame Centre in West Street, leaving Millbrook residents with only a three day gap in service.

Opening hours will be Tuesday 3pm to 5pm and Friday 2pm to 5pm.

These hours are subject to change depending on the outreach equipment available, but residents will be kept informed of any changes.

Whilst the new service will provide local residents with a continued Post Office presence in the heart of the village, it is a reduced hours service, so the Trust is asking anyone interested in running a full time Post Office in Millbrook to get in touch or visit www.runapostoffice.co.uk for details.

Torpoint’s Charlotte Holmes continues to make her mark in the media Torpoint model and former beauty queen Charlotte Holmes continues to make a big impression in the media.

At the end of last year she achieved what she described as ‘one of her proudest achievements’ when she was chosen to grace the cover of Women’s Fitness magazine’s December edition.

She is also appearing as one of the cast of Beach Body SOS on MTV which launched in January.

Her modelling career has taken Charlotte to more than 30 countries and seen her work with top brands including Marks & Spencer, Adidas, Speedo and ASOS. She has also shot campaigns for the Cornish based companies Finisterre and Fourth Element.

Meanwhile Charlotte, who was crowned Miss Cornwall in 2009 and Miss England in 2012, has qualified as a fitness instructor and yoga teacher and teaches classes in London at a top boutique fitness studio.

Charlotte, who attended Torpoint Junior School and Devonport High School for Girls, started her modelling career at the age of 19.

She won the Face of Plymouth title in 2007 and went on to become Miss Cornwall in 2009 before finishing fourth in Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model.

Daily Mile challenge

Schools across Cornwall are being encouraged to sign up to the Daily Mile challenge in a bid to tackle physical inactivity and childhood obesity.

In Cornwall around 27% of children aged 4-5 are identified as overweight through the National Child Measurement Program and the current trend is for this figure to increase throughout the primary school years to around 32% by age 10-11.

The Daily Mile, which was launched in Scotland in 2012, is about physical activity to improve children’s physical, social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing.

It has been adopted by over 2,000 schools in the UK, including seven in Cornwall.

Charitable Millbrook firm raises nearly £1000 for Jeremiah’s Journey Millbrook-based J Weekes Funeral Directors have always tried to help the local community and charities in many aspects of the business.

It was an easy decision to help Jeremiah’s Journey as it’s a local bereavement charity for children and young people based in Plymouth.

After lengthy chats with the charity the company held a small, friendly Christmas Fete in Millbrook Village Hall. The day consisted of many friends and family on hand to help with setting up the event.

There were 12 stalls all featuring unique local crafts from jewellery, children’s clothes and soap. The village folk band donated their time and skill, helping

to create a lovely atmosphere and everyone seemed to enjoy the day.

JD Hampers from Torpoint donated a large Christmas hamper as its own raffle and it raised a substantial amount of money. Charlotte Pine of J Weekes said: “We were so pleased that so many people turned out for the day, donated raffle prizes from stall holders and other attendees. Thank you to everyone that helped and we would like to announce that we raised £985.80.

“We are looking forward to helping another charity in the summer and hope to be able to help anyone we can.”

Cornwall Citizen’s Advice grant maintained

Planned cuts to Cornwall’s Citizen’s Advice service have been scrapped after public protests.

Cornwall Council had proposed to reduce its CA budget by £200,000 which would have led to closure of seven branches - including Saltash - and reduced services across the whole county.

The council has now confirmed that the current funding of £365,000 will be maintained but will gradually reduce by £20,000 a year over the next

three years.

Neil Colquhoun, CA Cornwall’s chief executive, said: “We welcome the Council’s decision to continue funding our vital work for a further four years which will allow us to provide a level of service for people throughout the county.

“As the grant reduces, we will work to meet the challenge of making up the shortfall in money while looking at new ways of providing advice to the public.”

Rame Male Voice Choir raise £15,000 for vital hospital equipment

A campaign by Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir to help fund molecular diagnostic equipment for Derriford hospital has reached almost £15,000.

Over Christmas, the Cornish community opened its hearts and wallets in a bid to save lives. Choir chairman Clive Brinkmann presented a £10,000 cheque to Derriford oncology molecular biologist Dr Jo Farrugia at their Kingsand Christmas concert. This was described as ‘an interim cheque’ - but in little over a month, a further £5000 has poured in.

TORCARE TIMES After the wonderful Christmas celebrations throughout Torcare we are looking forward to the Spring with sunny days and outings to the coast. But until the weather warms up we continue here at Torcare to plan a variety of activities throughout the three homes, which include painting, jigsaw making and playing cards. Heart shaped biscuits ready to decorate are planned for Valentine’s Day while working on knitted flower broches for Mothering Sunday and soon Easter is upon us which shouts CHOCOLATE.

We continue to plan a variety of entertainment to come into the three homes which include “Janine, Amser, Poslops, Tony and Ken, Wendy J. Bassett which we feature regularly and this season we are featuring a new couple Martin and Sarah Fowler keyboard, guitar and vocal entertainers and Sunny Side Up: Tim and Harry an interactive workshop where residents are encouraged to play the ukulele, tambourines, shakers etc. and to sing along.

What an amazing day we had when we were invited by Sarah Coryton, Lord High Sheriff of Cornwall to join Head Teacher Elisabeth Carney-Haworth and the ‘Silver Story’ children of Torpoint Nursery & Infant School for a celebratory luncheon at Pentillie Castle which is located only 20 minutes from Plymouth.

Our residents who are ‘Silver Listeners’ eagerly look forward to receiving their weekly telephone call from the children who read a short story or poem. This supports the children with their reading skills but also forms a link with the local elderly community.

Pentillie Castle is a very breath taking estate and the house and grounds were enjoyed by everyone. The lunch which was arranged by Sarah and Ted Coryton was magnificent and enjoyed by all. Fabulous memories were made and a visit that will certainly not be forgotten.

Volunteers needed at Antony National Trust A charity draw organised by Jan Brown of Karkadia in Torpoint raised over £800.

The money raised was shared between two charities - Bone Cancer Research and Together for Short Lives – with the proceeds presented to Will Miliner and Miss Teenage Great Britain

Family and friends meet to dedicate a memorial bench to the Robinson family of Torpoint

Each year thousands of volunteers join the National Trust in caring for special places. It’s an amazing way to make new friends, work in beautiful places and help a great cause.

At Antony a hardworking and dedicated group of volunteers maintain and bring to life this gem of a house and garden tucked away in the ‘forgotten corner’. In 2018 we are looking for more volunteers to join our team. It’s most important that you just bring a smile but if you have previous skills and experience then maybe we can put those to good work too.

Volunteering opportunities can be tailored to suit you.

We offer short term roles lasting just a few weeks, longer term commitments and anything in between.

The family approached Torpoint Town Council last year wanting to provide a lasting memorial to their parents and were delighted by the suggestion to place a memorial bench overlooking the river.

Once the bench was installed, Sharon Robinson (daughter) invited friends of her parents to meet together and recall their family’s wonderful time spent in Torpoint.

She said: “On behalf of the Robinson family, we are very grateful to all those involved with the installation of the bench in memory of our parents, it is hoped that many people will be able to sit and enjoy the beautiful view in the future.”

New Year’s Eve revels!

New Year’s Eve at Torpoint saw the usual invasion of cowboys, indians, nurses, Martians and Minnions, to name but a few of the colourful fancy dress outfits.

Hundreds of revellers descended from all over the town to the ferry lanes leaving the pubs and clubs to join in the midnight celebration in the usual Torpoint fashion.

A very friendly jolly crowd formed for the countdown to celebrate the start of 2018, corks popped, hugs commenced and the celebration of the new year began.

Onlookers enjoyed the spectacle of the varied costumes displayed and even better the police enjoyed a trouble free occasion – what a great way to celebrate the coming of 2018.

New Year’s Day dip!

The perfect hangover cure and a great way to begin 2018 - that’s the New Year’s Day Dip organised

by Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club at Cawsand Bay. As usual the fancy dress judging and the dip registration was held in Kingsand Village Hall and a fine array of fancy dress participants made it such a hard decision for the judges MP Sheryll Murray, Little Miss Teen Great Britian and local Town crier Clive O’Shaunessy.

Young and old made such a great effort and the whole event is aimed at everyone helping to raise money for the Lions charity to use for good causes and also to raise money by the folk taking part to use for their own charities or club funds so a win win situation all around.

The Parade set off at 12.15pm and proceeded through Kingsand and on to Cawsand raising money on the way. The crowds greeting them remained as large as ever and the street was lined along the way helping to make the event so special.

On arrival at the beach with all the plucky participants looking pretty cold and sceptical, a short break for photos and then it was the countdown. At 12.30pm off they went into the sea for a wake up dip where fancy dress outfits seem to fall apart leaving only the hardy to enjoy a longer swim.

Then it was out of the water to be revived with warm soup and warm clothes. Fun was had by all, we think, but lots of money raised for good causes, well done all.

The Lions club would like to thank all those who return every year and to all new dippers for their support. Without this support we would not be able to help so many needy causes.

Mayor’s message The Mayor of Torpoint Coun Lambert Keise Welcome to the first Mayor’s Message of 2018. Some recent events attended have included: November 17 - a delightful evening of song and music, fund-raising for Derriford Hospital oncology department, in St James Church.

Choirs came the length and breadth of Cornwall to perform with the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir, it was truly wonderful, raising over £1,000.

December 2 - Maureen and I attended the Torpoint Christmas Lights switch on, which was performed

by Citizen of the Year Chris Still.

The entertainment was varied and entertaining, my sincere thanks to all those involved. Father Christmas arrived in style on a rickshaw, much to the entertainment of the young people in the crowd. Thanks also to the local retailers who gave their support by opening their shops into the evening and also to those who entered the Best Dressed Window competition, giving an extra special feel to the occasion, the winning window was won by The Emporium – well done! The evening of the same day, Maureen and I had great pleasure presenting Delia and Mike Cook with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the town in celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

December 6 - I attended the Community Christmas Dinner hosted by 2nd Torpoint Scout Group – Red Watch.

December 9 - Maureen and I attended the craft fair held at the Council Chambers in aid of the Community Cinema. This event coincided with the judging of the town logo competition, were the winning entry was chosen and sealed in an envelope. The winning logo entry has been revealed and it will be finalised at the January Council meeting. Thank you to all those who took the time to submit an entry. Maureen and I then attended St James Church for the Christmas tree competition. Over 50 trees were on display all dressed by organisations from the town. The effect was a spectacular forest of colour, light and fun. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all who took the time and effort to enter. Maureen and I closed our fantastic Saturday being entertained by the Callington Gospel Choir Concert held at the Council Chambers. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and we all soon joined in with song and gusto. Thank you to the Torpoint Christian Fellowship and their congregation.

December 10 - I attended the Big Sing Community Carol service held at St James Church. The Wilcove bell ringers made the evening extra special along with a newly formed ukulele group. The whole event was enjoyed by all and I am sure all those in attendance cannot wait for the concert next year.

December 13 - Maureen and I attended the Carbeile School Christmas Concert held at St James Church Torpoint. The children were a sight to behold, with their song and poetry, the evening closed with a great rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Well done Pete Hamlyn, staff and pupils of the school.

December 15 - I attended The Plymouth Lord Mayor’s Carol Service held at The Minster Church of St Andrew. The atmosphere was truly magical with the choir and the candles adding to the effect of Christmas.

December 16 - Maureen and I attended the Torpoint & District Royal British Legion Christmas Dinner held at the Council Chambers. It was a splendid night with good food, company and entertainment with over £300.00 raised by the raffle.

Congratulations and well done to all involved.

December 23 – Maureen and I were pleased to attend the first screenings hosted by the Community Cinema group, thanks to all those involved.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day – Maureen and I enjoyed visiting the care homes at Antony, Torpoint and Porte Rouge where the Torcare residents were ‘over the moon’ to see us; it was delightful to spend time with them, exchanging stories at this special time of year.

We visited St James Church to meet the people who were preparing a Christmas Day meal for those who would otherwise be alone – thank you to all concerned.

And finally, the Mayor’s Charity Dinner & Ball is on Saturday February 17, 7pm – 7.30pm arrival, in the Council Chambers, Torpoint. A three course dinner plus coffee will be served, followed by music from Gavin and Gordy. Judith Jones is welcomed as the Lions latest recruit

Judith is latest recruit to join Torpoint Lions Judith Jones is the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula’s Lions most recent recruit.

After attending three meetings, Judith is now a proud member of the local Lions and can now officially be called a Lion!

Judith has lived in Torpoint since 1978 and loves it!

She has two grown up children; three grandchildren with another one on the way and two bright and energetic step grandsons.

When asked why she wanted to become a Lion, Judith replied: “Having friends who are serving or have served within the Lions, I now feel more able to volunteer along with this friendly, welcoming and like-minded group of people, who never tire of helping and supporting groups, clubs and individuals in the community I have chosen to live in.

“Thank you to Lion Louise for introducing me, and to the rest of the members for making me feel so welcome. It’s an honour,” added Judith.

Kingsand Hall to the seafront. As spectators looked on, the colourful swimmers eagerly charged into the freezing sea. Some swimmers were quick to turn around and run out while others seemed to actually enjoy the temperature of the water and chose to linger!

A big thank you to the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions who arranged this event and a huge THANK YOU to all those who took part and raised money for their chosen charities.

Drum roll please...

Lions members attended a music concert at Torpoint Community College where Lion President Andy Brown presented the school with a cheque for £1000.

The college had appealed to the Lions for help in purchasing some drums for the school and after careful consideration it was agreed that it was an appeal that the local Lions would be happy to support.

Lifeguards are being recruited

by RNLI The RNLI is in search of new recruits to spend the summer working on some of the south west’s most popular beaches, as applications open for 2018’s beach lifeguards and face to face fundraisers.

Both roles are essential in supporting the RNLI to reduce the number of people who drown on our coasts, and to help keep people safe by providing essential local safety advice to the millions of holidaymakers who visit the beaches every summer.

RNLI lifeguards patrol over 240 beaches around the UK and Channel Islands, including several in Cornwall.

At the forefront of the RNLI’s lifesaving work, they saved 127 lives and helped 20,538 people in 2016. Successful applicants receive world-class training in search and rescue, lifesaving and casualty care techniques, as well as developing transferable skills.

The RNLI is also recruiting face-toface fundraisers, who’ll work alongside lifeguards to provide beach visitors with important safety advice, playing a vital role in saving lives by educating the public on risks at the coast.

Nearly 90 friends gathered at the Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club in January to celebrate the Diamond Wedding of retired schoolteachers David and Doreen England.

They have spent 56 years in Torpoint, teaching in the local schools for several decades and involving themselves in the local community.

They have two sons – Simon and daughter-inlaw Hilary who have four children, Tallulah, Storme, Jasmim and Gus – and Paul, who is married to Tracey, who have two children Jack and Emily.

The occasion was a light hearted affair. Tony Ayers, Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club President, welcomed the guests and invited others to join with him to recall amusing anecdotes from the past in which Dave and Doreen had been associated.

Many generations of local people, some now grandparents themselves, remember being caught up in Dave and Dor’s enthusiasms: Dartmoor Ten Tors club, tennis and badminton clubs, camping, canoeing, sailing dinghies and bigger boats, theatre visits and natural history trips.

Overseas cruising with their boat resulted in the twinning of Torpoint and Bénodet, which now has a strong link with TMSC. They also researched the long history of the sailing club and published two booklets on the subject.

Dave thanked the guests for their friendship and support over the years and made mention of Anne and Gérard who had come all the way from La Rochelle in France to celebrate the occasion.

A help in times of need When did you last think of God? Was it at Christmas perhaps when you heard the words of the carols being played in the shops - or perhaps He might have crossed your mind when you saw a disaster on the TV, or a touching story of heroism or a miracle article in the paper.

It might have been when you were last with your family and felt blessed being surrounded by people who love you.

The problem is that in the day to day routines of life we tend to forget God, and it’s only in the extraordinary or the disaster or the special occasion that He crosses our minds.

On the first of January I found myself in such a situation - having been taken to Derriford by ambulance I was lying on a trolley waiting to be admitted to hospital.

I had pneumonia and was very ill. I was not alone, Derriford A & E was packed with people in similar situations all needing attention and being watched over by accompanying families and friends.

Now as confident as I was regarding the abilities of the doctors and nurses working that day, I was also talking to God and asking for His help. And it led me to wonder how many other people in that department were also calling on God’s help in their moment of need.

The problem being that the less we think of God in the ordinary and everyday, the more difficult it is to strike up a conversation with Him and to offer up our thoughts and problems when the crises do come into our lives.

I do know that God wishes to have an everyday relationship with us and not just in the critical and emergency times, and I do know how much easier it is to talk to Him in the critical times if you have also spoken to Him in the good times.

So perhaps this New Year might be a good time to think about forming a relationship with God in the everyday - so that when the unexpected happens the lines of communication are already open and God is already there waiting to help.

Festive concert for charity Torpoint Lady Singers and the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir presented their Annual Christmas Concert at St James Church, Torpoint in December The concert was in aid of two charities, Ava’s Fund (Neo-natal Unit re Stillborn Babies) and Molecular Diagnostic Equipment for the Oncology Unit at Derriford Hospital.

St James Church, with some of the beautifully decorated trees from the Christmas Tree Festival was the backdrop for the two choirs.

A festive evening with traditional carols, popular Christmas music featuring O Holy Night, Mistletoe and Wine, Star Candles, Mary’s Child and Christmas Time is Here featured in the first half.

In the second half Christmas hats were donned and the Rame Choir sang the Snow Waltz and a medley of carols. Torpoint Lady Singersperformed It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Santa Baby and Merry Christmas Everybody.

The two choirs then combined to sing Silent Night, Silent World, by Dvorak and a cheeky Gloucester Wassail Song. The respective musical directors and accompanists were Sylvia Fraser, Sue Westwell, Jonathan Lewsey and Elizabeth Sidebotham.

Soloist was Justine Dalton, saxophone Ken Trethewey and bass guitarist John Stubberfield.

Ava’s Mum Sophie spoke about her stillborn daughter and the fund raised in her name and a Rame Choir representative spoke about the molecular equipment which would give quicker results and patients would not have to travel to Bristol.

The Rame Choir have performed many concerts to raise money for this equipment.The two choirs served a buffet after the concert and would like to extend their thanks to St James Church for providing the venue.

Bouquets and bottles were presented to the musical directors, accompanists, compere Martin Entwhistle and organist Dave Mashford.

Over £500 was raised on the night.

Ladies of Lanhydrock

Rosemary Slee, President, welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2018 wishing everyone a very happy New Year.

Rosemary then introduced guest speaker Paul Holden from the National Trust who has worked at Lanhydrock for many years and who gave a fascinating talk entitled ‘Ladies of Lanhydrock’.

We learned so much more about the history of Lanhydrock and the Robartes family and it is hoped members may visit the Estate later in the year to see this magnificent house and gardens.

Our Christmas Tree came second in the Christmas Tree Festival competition at St James Church in December and Rosemary thanked everyone for their lovely owl decorations. It was agreed the Christmas Party was once again brilliant and the funds raised from the raffle would be donated to the Community Nurses in Torpoint. The proceeds from the stall at the Library Craft Fair will be donated to the Town Council towards the Christmas Tree in Sparrow Park next year.

As next month will be the annual meeting, nominations for Committee were requested and it is hoped to have three new members join the Committee for next year. The resolution forms for 2018 have been completed and will be sent on for the annual general meeting in London later in the year.

Members were asked for ideas for speakers and outings for the next year and the cost of membership

was discussed. It was agreed that we do benefit in many ways from the cost of our membership, not least receiving the monthly magazine WI Life as well as the monthly County Newsletter.

The annual meeting, will be held on Wednesday February 28 at 7.30 pm in St James Church Hall and visitors are always very welcome.

WILCOVE

Folk group Snob Hill were guests at the Wilcove WI Carol Service.

For the second year, Wiilcove WI hosted their carol service in Maryfield Church on led by the Reverend Lynn Parker. Members of the WI had helped to decorate the church with beautiful greenery to complement its unique interior.

Over 50 members and guests sang carols and thoroughly enjoyed the seasonal and atmospheric folk songs by the local acapella folk group Snob Hill.

Following the service the congregation were treated to mulled wine and home made mince pies and sausage rolls, which completed a very convivial afternoon.

Donations made were divided between Maryfield Church and the ‘Home Alone’ initiative by St James’ Church in Torpoint, which provided a social Christmas Day for those who would otherwise be alone at Christmas.

The Christmas dinner was held at Aspects Restaurant in The Little Fox Hotel, Crafthole. A delicious dinner was followed by jazz entertainment provided by saxophonist Daniel Hillman and keyboard player Jacob Kodicek (otherwise known as Yoko Bears), plus Secret Santa presents distributed by a local ‘elf’ and a raffle.
