There will be a series of events at the Council Chambers in York Road, with printed copies of the plan available for review at the Town Council offices and Town Library. The draft plan will also be available for review and comment online at www.torpointplan.org.uk.

The Neighbourhood Plan brings together nine months of hard work by Torpoint Town Council and the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group who, since completing and publishing the award winning Vision for Torpoint, have developed further the policies for the plan.

The Town Council have engaged planning professional Neal Jillings of Jillings Haynes Planning to draft the Neighbourhood Plan document.

Sailing Club honours outgoing president for 25 years’ service Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club have paid special thanks to retiring Honorary President, Dave England, for more than 25 years of service to the Club.

Dave, who is well known to the people of Torpoint from his teaching days as well as his work at the water sports club, has been a member and friend of Torpoint Mosquito for over 50 years.

He was instrumental, among other things, in promoting the club’s frequent cross channel yacht cruises to Bendodet in Brittany and hosting French friends on return trips.

His exploits in his first homebuilt Mirror dinghy, Sinbad, and his various yachts kept him in stories over the years.

A special presentation to Dave was made at the club’s recent annual meeting. Steve Creek,

Commodore, and the in-coming Honorary President, Tony Ayers, thanked Dave for his contribution to the club over so many years and made a presentation of brandy glasses engraved with the club burgee and the words ‘with appreciation’ and a painting of the club to Dave.

Dave’s wife, Doreen, was presented with a bouquet of flowers for her invaluable support.

On receiving his gifts, Dave said: “I am surprised and delighted with the gifts that the club has presented to me and Doreen this evening.

“This club has been an enormous part of our lives since I first walked through the doors 54 years ago and we won’t be disappearing. We want to wish the Club, and Tony in particular, all best wishes for the Doreen and Dave England with Steve Creek in background. future.”

More than 40 volunteers took part in a beach survey at Polhawn to highlight the problems of marine litter.

The volunteers from Rame Peninsula Beach Care collected over 5,300 pieces of plastic from just 100 metres of beach as part of a three year study by the Marine Conservation Society.

The litter was collected in the morning and then in the afternoon sorted and counted within dozens of different catergories.

Claire Wallerstein of Rame Peninsula Beach Care said: “We’re very grateful to everyone who came along for the beach survey in the morning and also those who turned up to help with the count in the afternoon, which is such a painstaking thing, with the debris collected having to be sorted and counted within dozens of different categories.

“This survey is part of a three-year study in which

we are one of 19 groups participating around the whole UK. We survey the same 100 metre stretch of beach every three months, and the aim is to provide much-needed baseline data on the volume and sources of marine litter, which can be used in future to help put in place the right policies to reduce all forms of marine litter and so protect the marine environment.

“Currently, it is estimated that one million sea birds and 100,000 whales, dolphins, seals and turtles are killed each year by marine plastics.

“Concrete action is urgently needed to address the marine litter problem, although it is hard to tackle since plastics end up in the sea from so many sources, such as consumer litter - often dropped on streets miles from the coast and washed down drains into water courses - fishing and shipping, sewage, container spills, balloon releases and so on.”

Crime down in Torpoint - but up in Cornwall Recorded crime in Torpoint fell by more than 12 per cent last year despite crime rising in Cornwall as a whole.

Devon & Cornwall Police released the annual figures in January, which revealed a total of 270 crimes in the town in 2016, compared with 308 the previous year.

The biggest increases were in violence without injury, possession of weapons and possession of drugs.

These were offset by reductions in burglaries, sexual offences, shoplifting and vehicle offences.

In Millbrook and Rame there was a rise in recorded crime of 3.7 per cent, up from 162 to 168. The biggest increases were in sexual offences and possession of drugs.

In St Germans and Landrake recorded crime was up by 22 per cent from 118 to 144.

In Cornwall as a whole the total number of recorded crimes rose by just under three per cent from 21,848 in 2015 to 22,454 in 2016. Across the Devon & Cornwall force area crime rose by 5.8 per cent up from 77,465 recorded crimes in 2015 to 81,949 in 2016.

Forcewide the biggest increase was in offences of rape which rose from 961 to 1209, up by nearly 26 per cent.

Deputy Chief Constable Paul Netherton, said: “Crime figures only represent a minor part of what we as a police force actually do; around 80% of our business in non-crime related.

“We have one of the highest levels of public confidence of any force across the country, and this means that people feel supported and confident that we will take their crime seriously.

The upshot of this confidence from our public, is that we will see a rise in the reporting of certain crime types.

“We have worked hard as a Force to improve our response in a number of key crime areas such as rape, sexual offences, modern slavery and domestic violence.

“In recent years we have seen a huge rise in both current and historic

reporting in these areas, and I am encouraged that victims are finding the courage to come forward and reach out to us knowing that that they will be supported.

“No victim should suffer in silence, and Devon and Cornwall Police will continue to work hard to support these people and to give a voice to each and every one of them, regardless if this sees a rise in our crime figures.

“There has also been a number of new laws introduced which will see a rise in crime figures for all forces across the country, not just in Devon and Cornwall.

“An example of this is the introduction of the Malicious Communications Act, which is responsible for just under half of the increase in total recorded crime in 2016 in Devon and Cornwall, and sits within our ‘Violence Without Injury’ crime group on our figures.

“Examples of new crimes that fall within this act include abusive and threatening messages sent via social media, phone calls that the victim perceives as threatening in their nature, and even an abusive note left on the windshield of a car for parking in-front of someone’s house.

“We will soon have a clearer idea of where we as a Force sits nationally once the Office of National Statistics (ONS) release their national crime data, however I am confident that not only are my staff and officers working hard to protect and serve the public of Devon and Cornwall, but that this part of the UK continues to remain a safe place to live, work, and visit, and that the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime is still very low.”

Local businesses warned of £2 million cyber crime threat as major conference on counteracting potential harm is announced by Crimestoppers Businesses across Cornwall have been invited to attend a one-day conference aimed at helping them shore up their online security from real and potentially damaging cyber threats.

Crimestoppers, the independent crime-fighting charity, has a range of expert speakers who will highlight key dangers and offer practical advice on cyber security at the conference held at the famous Eden Project on Thursday 27 April 2017. It’s estimated that 80% of cyber crime is preventable if only people knew what the risks were and took a few simple security steps.

Sarah-Jane Prew, regional manager for Devon and Cornwall, said: “Cyber crime affects not just big business but also small companies. Once a business comes under attack it can be difficult to bounce back and a costly, painful experience.

“In a fast changing environment, businesses need to be fully aware of the risks and consequences. Banks increasingly refuse to withstand losses suffered by companies from cyber crime, and insurance companies favour those with adequate protection before they offer preferential premiums.

“All of us who use the internet are at risk and it’s important to understand how your staff fit into this and how they can often be the ones, even unwittingly, who provide the weak link in the chain. This one-day conference will give local businesses of all sizes the edge they need when it comes to protecting themselves from the cyber crime threat.”

Crimestoppers in Devon and Cornwall has been liaising with law enforcement agencies at all levels to devise how best to educate and inform businesses in the area about the dangers.

Plymouth-based IT company Acronyms estimate that last year cyber crime cost the counties of Devon and Cornwall nearly £2 million. Nationally, more than half of emails received by businesses contained viruses or were fraudulent and threequarters of all websites have vulnerabilities that leave them exposed.

The Santa Sleigh runs were very successful in 2016 with £3000 being raised for local charities.

To receive such comments as ‘Santa was awesome’ and the gratitude of a mum whose children now believe that their daddy received his presents despite being on a warship deployed, are rewards in themselves as are the smiles on the children’s faces.

The Lions New Year’s Day Dip went with its usual splash (oh dear) this year with over 100 dippers in a wide variety of costumes.

The fancy dress was of its usual high standard and judged by Sheryl Murray MP, Town Crier Clive O’Shaughnessy and Mr. Michaels, Chairman of the Kingsand Community Hall Committee.

The prize winners were: Lions Shield for Effort - Cornish Bobsleigh Team, Ship Shape Trophy Martin Hambly as Rocket Man, Print Options for Best Large Group - Rollercoaster Wheelers Cup for Best Cup Team - Halfway Harmony as the Nativity, Lions Cup for Best Small Team - Cornish Pirates and the Neder Trophy was

won by Jack Andrew as Robot.

Torpoint’s pantomime this year is Dick Whittington by Alan Frayn. It has all the usual elements of a true British panto.

Presented by the Torpoint Players, the popular panto is staged at the Torpoint Council Hall, York Road, Torpointfrom February 2 to 4.

When the curtains open we discover that the city of London is under threat from King Rat and his evil army of ‘ratlets’. Alderman Fitzwarren and his daughter Alice are under siege from the rats, particularly as the monstrous creatures have become immune to the rat poison, and King rat looks set to take over the whole of London and install himself as Lord Mayor.

Luckily the good fairy is alert to his tricks and recruits Dick and his loyal cat Tom. Tom is a true ‘Ginger Tom’ and a wizard at catching and doing away with all the rats he can find.

Meanwhile Alderman Fitzwarren has discovered that the Sultan of Morocco has also been overrun by rats and so decides to recoup some of his fortune by selling his now useless rat poison

to the Sultan. Everyone including the Dame and Idle Jack set sail but there are stowaways on board! Dick and Tom creep aboard as Dick is intent on clearing his name, after being accused of stealing a necklace that was to be Alice’s Birthday gift.

Also King rat manages to get some of his ‘ratlets’ on board. The voyage is enjoyed by all those on board and all goes well until King rat uses his powers to wreck the ship on the shores of Morocco.

Luckily all survive and Tom becomes the hero of the hour by destroying all the ‘ratlets’ and Dick fights King rat and forces him to capitulate.....everyone and of course all of London are saved from doom, just in time for the finale song!

Teresa’s new treatment Teresa Wicksteed recently qualified as a sound healing practitioner, with the UK College of Sound Healing.

Her practice relies primarily on the voice, the most simple, powerful and easily accessible instrument available!

For Teresa, ‘healing’ encompasses the Old English ‘Haelen’ – meaning to make whole, to restore to balance, including balance between mind and body.

Recent scientific research into sound has shown that certain sound frequencies can speed up natural healing processes.

As the body is around seventy per cent water, sound waves easily flow through and re-balance internal tissues.

During treatment, the client experiences a feeling of very deep relaxation: in this balanced state, it is easy for healing to occur on many levels.

Sound healing treatment lasts for around one hour. During the treatment clients lie on a therapy couch while Teresa makes

‘Toning’ is somewhere between chanting and singing.

Polhawn Fort. The sound of the sea, wind and birds are a backing track to her sound healing sessions.

She offers individual therapy sessions of an hour, charging £30 for the first appointment, thereafter £40.

Entertaining time for residents December went in a blur of activity and entertainment.

Across the three homes we were entertained by Tony and Ken – a singing duo specialising in 60s and 70s music – the St Johns Lady Singers, Martin Fowler on keyboard and guitar, Janine singing Christmas songs, The Ferryboaters, Poslips, and the annual panto ‘Puss in Boots’ to name but a few. Some of our residents enjoyed visits to the Torpoint Community College and to The Whitsand Bay Hotel for lunch.

The raffles were well supported and thank you to all of the businesses who donated prizes, to families who contributed and to everyone who bought the tickets.

Together we raised over £600, a fantastic amount, for the Residents Amenities Fund which contributes towards the outings and treats throughout the year. Roll on Spring!

People always come first at Torcare

Torpoint Wives Group latest Torpoint Wives Group met at Cornerstone Church, Torpoint where Eve Oates welcomed Debbie Shenton and two helpers, who were going to help members to create their own Christmas cards and tags.

There was a buzz of happy chatter and laughter with the folding, cutting and glueing – with much help.

At the end of the evening members exhibited their masterpieces and such was the enjoyment the group

are hoping Debbie will come along again in 2017.

A successful year with increased membership ended in December 7 with a delicious Christmas lunch at The Liscawn with attentive staff, a secret Santa and a big raffle.

Community Police Cadets receive their certificates Torpoint and Rame Community Police Cadets held their first awards ceremony in Torpoint Council Chambers in December.

The cadets received certificates from Police Inspector Julian Morris and Torpoint Mayor John Crago. Certificates were awarded for celebrating the 10-year anniversary of police cadets in Devon and Cornwall Police as well as ASDANaccredited certificates recognising the hours they have each accumulated participating in community events and activities.

These ASDAN credits can be included in cadets’ educational portfolios. One of the cadets also received a Duke of Cornwall award in recognition of additional work undertaken researching community and neighbourhood safety issues.

All the cadets had family members present to witness them being presented with their certificates and the evening was enjoyed by all who attended.

It’s a festive wrap...

College hosts special event for senior citizens

Torpoint Community College hosted senior citizens from the local community again this year for a Christmas lunch followed by some festive entertainment.

The guests were hosted by a number of students who also joined them for lunch once they had finished serving the meals. This was then followed by a musical medley of Christmas songs performed by the Torpettes, and a number of solos and duets, in the main hall which was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the guests.

The students who hosted and supported the lunch were amazing and should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Mount Edgcumbe Christmas Fayre proves popular again Mount Edgcumbe Christmas Fayre attracted the usual huge number of visitors who arrived by ferry, car, coach even a bus service.

Staff and entertainers were kept very busy all weekend. The rain on the Saturday and thick fog on Sunday did not deter or dampen the spirits of the throngs of everyone young and old.

Choirs sang including the festive dressed Italia Conti Choir. There was something for everyone with stalls of every kind, food for all tastes, refreshments to suit everyone of all ages.

Various exhibitions were dotted around the outbuildings and cooking demonstrations by the Cornwall College Group made up of chefs and students from around the county showing off their skills, cooking up some tasty dishes.

In his Grotto was a very special visitor: Santa was there with his elves and helpers to ask the children if they were being good and taking orders for special Christmas presents that would be in his sleigh on Christmas Eve. A very special occasion for all the children who saw him.

It takes a lot of hard work to organise such a large event like this that when it is such a success it becomes worth the effort. Well done to all involved as it also raises funds to keep the beautiful house and estate available for all to enjoy.

Bad stuff happens to good people as well Bad stuff does happen to good people. Cancer comes back and strikes a good person who lives a healthy lifestyle while someone who abuses their body has a long life.

A church organist is killed in an unprovoked attack walking to church on Christmas Eve (2012). The suffering of families in Syria is incomprehensible.

The late John Taylor, former bishop of Winchester, recalls being asked to visit a young couple whose two year old daughter had been found dead in her cot. He found them grief ridden and still stunned and haunted by the question ‘why?’

The bishop said: ‘I simply could not offer them the conventional reassurance about it all being in God’s providence, a mystery now but one day to be seen as part of a loving plan.

‘I know that many good souls find lasting comfort from such counsel, but to me it has become unconvincing and suggests a picture of God I find impossible to love.

‘I said to them instead, that their child’s death was a tragic accident, an unforeseeable failure in the function of the little girl’s body, that so far from being willed or planned by God, it was, for Him, a disaster and a frustration of his will for life and fulfilment just as it was for them, and that He shared their pain and loss and was with them in it.’

John Taylor was wrestling with what we all have to face as we seek to relate real life to what we are sometimes taught about God. Some may say that we are promised that in heaven all wrongs will be righted and we shall have peace at last.

But I don’t want a faith that can’t face up to the facts that many good people suffer horribly, and many wicked people enjoy all the benefits of a rewarding life.I don’t think it’s possible to call myself a Christian and just leave out the awkward bits.

In Isaiah 63 vs 9 we read: “In all their distress God too was distressed.”

Can that be the secret? Does God really share our pain and success. Is that the meaning of Jesus life and death on the cross? It’s not about some great plan after all. The God revealed by Jesus is a God of love and compassion and above all is the God who is always on the side of those who suffer.

Jesus never promised that his followers would have an easy time. Quite the opposite, Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Ultimately, there is no final answer – all we can say is that somehow we have faith in God and that we believe God is with us in our sorrow and grief.

And that has to be enough.

An ‘arty’ happy new year for Wilcove WI For Wilcove WI, the first meeting of 2017 had a cheerful theme with a visit from ceramic artist Heather Hunt with the message that ‘Getting arty makes you happier’.

She provided flat ceramic shapes and everyone had the opportunity to be artistic in painting them with a range of coloured glazes ready for firing. Hopefully members will be surprised and delighted by their work when it is returned as a finished glazed hanging ornament at the next meeting!

The experience certainly seemed to prove Heather’s point about the value of creativity.

Members were pleased with news of their charitable

fundraising activities before Christmas, having raised £26 for Cornwall Wildlife Trust by making a donation for wearing their wellies to the November meeting, and raised £70 for Maryfield Church and £25 for the maintenance of the church organ through donations at their carol service in December.

Everyone had the opportunity to make suggestions for activities, visits and speakers for the next year, before the programme is finalised, and there were plenty of ideas put forward, so another varied and interesting year for Wilcove WI is in prospect.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday February 21, at 7.30 pm

Improving careers advice in Cornwall Education partners from across Cornwall have been working together to develop key strategies to ensure the focus over the next four years is to provide world-class education to children and young people.

The new Cornwall Careers Offer 2016-2020 was published in December, only a few months after the release of Cornwall’s new Education Strategy.

Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) is recognised as a strategic priority within Cornwall’s Education Strategy, the ‘Raising Aspiration and Achievement Strategy’ (RAAS) and by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (CIoS) Employment and Skills Board. It also forms a key feature of the Employment and Skills strand of Cornwall’s Devolution Deal with Government.

However, while there is much excellent practice, the congested and confusing landscape for the CEIAG landscape means there is a lack of a consistent offer for all young people in Cornwall. There is also no clear strategy for co-ordinating existing and future investment into activity. The new analysis published by the Careers & Enterprise Company highlights Cornwall as the worst in the UK for linking schools with local businesses so they can learn about the world of work.
