A group of GCSE art students were given an inspiring talk by contemporary artist Edward Waite at his exhibition currently on display at Residence One in Plymouth’s Royal William Yard. The students from St Boniface’s Catholic College in Manadon Park spent time viewing the fascinating artwork across three floors of Residence One; looking at the artist’s sketchbooks and large format paintings for inspiration for their school projects. Mr Waite explained how he draws influence from his surroundings - and from other artists which allowed him to develop his unique approach to capturing urban landscapes. Year 9 student Joe Vatcher was in awe and commented “It was really good to meet a real artist and ask him about his career. I’ve got lots of ideas now for my coursework.” Head of Art - Jayne Wills, organised the trip during the Easter holidays to ensure the students had the opportunity to meet the artist in person. “It is such a rare opportunity for children to meet the artists we discuss in class. The visit today has allowed the class to appreciate the importance of growing and developing as an artist in their own right.” Mr Waite signed copies of his gallery catalogue for each student.
