Prince Rock nominated as Primary School of the Year Plymouth’s Prince Rock Primary School is one of only six schools in the whole of the country to have been shortlisted for the ‘Primary School of the Year’ title.

This prestigious national award is sponsored by the country’s leading educational newspaper, the Times Educational Supplement (TES) and it is widely acknowledged as being the major national educational awards body and seen as a sort of teaching ‘Oscars’ for schools! 2013 and it is currently working alongside To have made the top six shortlist when the UK has over 25,000 schools is a really and supporting a number of primary schools in the Plymouth area. remarkable achievement! News of the school’s success was announced by TES in May, along with a list of Prince Rock’s competition in the final. A renowned panel of judges will now pick their overall national winner at a prestigious awards ceremony in London on Friday July 4.

Judith Harwood, assistant director for education, learning and families for Plymouth City Council, said: “Prince Rock Primary is an absolute credit to the city and the school fully deserves to be shortlisted in the Times Education Supplement awards.

Simon Spry, national leader of education and headteacher of Prince Rock Primary School was understandably delighted.

“To receive such national recognition is a real achievement and is testament to the difference the school makes to the lives of its pupils.

“We’re over the moon! Again!! This is a wonderful acknowledgement of our fabulous school and marvellous children. We have enjoyed three ‘outstanding’ grades from Ofsted in the last three years and we thought that was remarkable, but this really is the icing on the cake. “To have made the top six nationally is amazing. It would of course be great to go one step further and win the coveted first place in the final, but at the moment we are just delighted to be in the final mix.” Prince Rock Primary is a National Support School and a National Teaching School and one of the two schools leading Plymouth’s Teaching School Alliance. Prince Rock Primary was graded as outstanding by Ofsted in 2010, 2012 and

“Its innovative and co-operative culture also means best practice is shared with other city schools to help ensure Plymouth as a whole provides top quality education for all our children.” For more information on the school or its achievements please contact Simon Spry on 01752 257698 or simon.spry@ princerock.plymouth.sch.uk In the meantime the school is appealing for support so that representatives from Prince Rock can attend the final in July. Any local business or organisation which would like to associate itself with the school and sponsor its appearance in the final is asked to contact the school’s business manager on 01752 310063.

Churches join forces to launch week-long programme of events Six churches in Stoke and Devonport have joined forces to organise a series of events called ‘Hope for Devonport and Stoke.’ The programme of events runs from May 31 to June 8 and is being staged in partnership with an organisation called Through Faith Missions. For the past few years the local churches in Devonport and Stoke have begun working together more closely. The Anglican churches of St Barnabas, St Michael’s and St Aubyn’s, together with Morice Town Salvation Army, Devonport Community Baptist Church and Stoke Christian Centre, have been meeting regularly for prayer and joint services. However, for some time the churches have felt they want to connect more closely with the local community. Hope for Devonport and Stoke is a chance for local

people to ask questions about the Christian faith, to hear stories about the difference Jesus makes and to suggest ways the churches can serve the area better. There will also be teams visiting people in their homes to conduct a survey on faith today. Highlights of the programme of events include: • Messy Church at Stoke Christian Centre, Devonport Road at 4pm on Sunday June 1. For families and carers with children aged up to 13 years old • Family Fun at St Barnabas Church Garden in Stuart Road, Stoke on Saturday June 7 at 3pm featuring puppets, bouncy castle and barbecue • The Great Escape at Devonport Community Baptist Church, Welcome Hall, Fore Street Devonport on Sunday June 8 at 11am featuring escapologist Simon Thomas.

• Celtic Service at St Aubyn’s Church, Chapel Street, Devonport on Sunday June 8 at 9.30am There are two new programmes where people can find out more about the Christian faith. They provide an honest, informal and positive way to explore the real message of Jesus and discover life to the full. ‘Only Looking’ starts on Tuesday June 11 at the Salvation Army, Morice Town 7pm for coffee, 7.30pm start. ‘Christianity Explored’ starts at St Michael’s Church in Albert Road on Wednesday June 12 at 7.30pm. A full programme of events can be found on the Facebook Page: Churches Together in Devonport and Stoke, or call Revd Tim Buckley on 01752 666544. Revd Buckley said: “It promises to be an exciting and informative week, and everyone is more than welcome to take part – whatever their beliefs.”

Beauty students Simply the Vest New community initiative for Ford and Keyham A new community initiative is being launched in Ford on the last Saturday in June. The Ford Family Group has been set up by parents, grandparents and carers who saw the need for a friendly and fun filled Saturday morning activity club in the Ford and Keyham area. After searching for a suitable venue, Father Richard Silk has been delighted to offer a home for the Group at St Marks Church in Cambridge Road, Ford - very much supporting their plans to provide a much needed meeting place for young families within the area. The aim of the group is to offer parents and carers the chance to bring along children from birth to teens to socialise and play in a safe and friendly environment. In addition to providing play equipment and toys for all ages there are also craft activities on offer for children to take part in with their parents or carers providing a themed activity each week – such as pirates or underwater world aimed to appeal to all ages, including the grown ups! For the youngsters there is also a healthy snack and drink provided whilst hot drinks will be available throughout the morning for the big people – so why not come along, make new friends and have some fun. Each session runs from 10.30am to 12pm and costs £1 per child to include all snacks, drinks and craft resources – adults may wish to donate towards the cost of their drinks and biscuits. Ford Family Group assures families a warm welcome and a chance to make new friends - they hope to see you there!

A team of beauty students from City College Plymouth is representing the College in the national Pantrepreneur competition 2014, run as part of the Gazelle Colleges group which focuses on providing students with commercial, entrepreneurial learning opportunities. The competition is a social enterprise challenge designed to encourage valuable collaborative marketing and business skills and to develop an awareness of social and global issues around fair trade and sustainability. The group will be selling fair trade pants and undergarments, ranging from £7 to £15, in order to raise money and awareness for the Pants to Poverty campaign before they go to the final of the Pantrepreneur competition in Berkshire in midJune. Charlotte Dickinson, beauty student and chief executive for Simply the Vest said: “We are really enjoying running Simply the Vest and raising

The beauty students who have set up an enterprise called ‘Simply the Vest’ to help raise awareness of the campaign Pants to Poverty

awareness for Pants to Poverty. It has been great to do something different from our course and we have learned a lot of new skills as a result of taking part in the competition.” The College’s employability and enterprise manager, Mike Jones, added: “It’s great that the students are involved in a real-life enterprise situation. They have designed a

business plan, are making a website and are taking various roles in the competition to simulate a real business situation.” Further information on the students’ business can be found on their Facebook www.facebook.com/ simplythevest. DETOX ...ENERGISE ...STIMULATE SELF HEALING

Prints by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol – four of the 20th century’s greatest artists – are now on display at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery in an exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A). ‘Modern Masters in Print: Matisse, Picasso, Dalí and Warhol’ is the latest in a series of high profile art exhibitions at the city centre venue. Drawn from the V&A’s outstanding collections of prints, posters and artists’ books, the exhibition highlights the different ways each artist used printmaking to express themselves and develop their artistic practice.

Window & Door Maintenance

For Matisse and Picasso, printmaking was one of many art forms they used, and one which enabled them to explore themes and motifs from other areas of their work. Glass Splashbacks

For Dalí, printmaking was an exercise in experimentation, through which he developed many imaginative new processes.

24 Hour Emergency Glazing

Warhol’s prints were his primary means of expression and central to his work. His screen-prints based on massproduced images challenged the concept of the ‘original’ print.

These modern masters had a profound influence in the art world and beyond – leaving a legacy that we still come across today. All four were also accomplished printmakers and used the medium to reach a wider audience. Together, they spanned a 75-year period that saw the birth of the modern age. Their work represents one of the most creative and diverse periods of printmaking in the history of western art.

display team of the Royal Navy. Founded in 1983, the team’s members are drawn from volunteers from across the Naval Service – from ships, submarines, the Royal Marines and the Fleet Air Arm.

Giving back so much Plymouth – Britain’s ‘Ocean City – attributes much of its rich heritage to countries discovered by famous explorers in the nation’s history. Many from those same nations now enjoy contributing back into Plymouth society while seeking sanctuary from life threatening events across the world. Victims of persecution incur a vulnerability that leads to desperate measures to escape harm. In their search for safety they are often forced to take a route that results in painful separation from loved ones and necessary abandonment of material possessions and emotional security. At the mercy of international law, human traffickers or geographical location, each refugee faces conditions that stretch limits of endurance either physically or psychologically.

Refugee Week is celebrated in Plymouth between June 14 and June 22 this year. Here Trish Baxter reflects on the contribution of refugees to the life of the Britain’s ‘Ocean City’ News reports have told of men and women committing themselves to see positive change in the society by becoming Community Champions in Health and Sports, and there are now innumerable individuals, in the refugee community, giving dedicated voluntary hours to charitable agencies across the city with a view to give back into the society where they have found a friendly welcome. One initiative by a dedicated and longstanding volunteer with the British Red Cross is called the ‘Give Back Project’. Managed by Waleed Abdallah, he encourages

practical support to those who need it. Through their contribution Plymouth has witnessed many individuals serving in various ways to do just that, whether decorating, gardening or odd jobs. To celebrate these achievements during National Refugee Week, the people of Plymouth are invited to take an opportunity by participating at events starting on June 14 at Brickfields, where the annual Hope FC Football Tournament and Family Fun Day (10am – 4pm) will be filled with a variety of activities, including live bands & music, dramatic storytelling, Play Association activities, hair braiding, bouncy castle and crafts, etc. Entry, activities, and refreshments are free to all. Free film screenings at the University and other events are also open to the public during the week. A programme of events is available on request.

Their contribution in terms of values, skills, cultural expression and positive lifestyle has created opportunities for them to integrate within our society and for us all to learn respect from one another. Ocean City Plymouth now benefits from the professional expertise of medical, educational and agricultural personnel, as well as the enterprising efforts of businesses that have already added to the economic wellbeing of the city.

Mount Street Primary...rapidly improving

Good for everyone at Mount Street Staff, parents and children at Mount Street Primary School are thrilled at the good results from their recent Ofsted inspection and how they are ‘rapidly improving’ pupil’s achievement following their previous satisfactory judgement two years ago. The school was acknowledged in the report for its ‘consistently good teaching ‘with some being ‘outstanding’, ensuring that ‘all pupils make good progress and achieve well.’ Ofsted were full of praise for the inner city school and recognised that all staff were part of the effective team which works well to ‘drive improvement, raise standards and lead the school through a period of rapid improvement.’ Headteacher, Mrs Roberts acclaims their success to the powerful learning ethos, high expectations for learning and behaviour and a strong set of cooperative values which underpin practice and policy.

Outdoor learning is one of the ways Mount Street Primary helps youngsters to achieve.

Parents are equally pleased with the result as Justyna Fanous salutes the school for their diligence. “As a parent I am very happy with the Ofsted report.

Children are very proud of their school, valuing the opportunities and being enthusiastic about their learning.

“Based on everyday observation of the teachers, other staff and general life of the school, seeing how much effort and energy everyone puts in to make the school a better place I wouldn’t hesitate to mark it outstanding and I would definitely recommend it to other parents.”

Learn to sing - for free - with the Pilgrimaires everyone will be starting from first base.

The Pilgrimaires is Plymouth’s very own Barbershop Chorus. Founded in 1978 with just seven members it went on twice to win Gold Medals at the National Barbershop Convention, toured the USA and was made welcome at the White House by the Vice President. As a further part of its commitment to the community the chorus runs an annual singing course which is open to all men within the greater Plymouth area and is completely free. This year’s course runs for six weeks and begins on June 12 at 7.30 pm. The course is called simply ‘Learn to Sing’, although the group hope to attract potential singers at all skill levels. John Bush of the Pilgrimaires said: “Even if you are an absolute novice you will be welcome to join, and gain from the course. “Neither previous experience nor the ability to read music is a pre-requisite. Above all, do not say to yourself ‘I can’t sing’; there are

very few people for whom this is literally true. If you have the basic ability to hold a note we will do the rest.” Individual and small group tuition will be in the hands of former chorus director (and National Barbershop Judge) Barry Hine. Particpants will learn the fundamentals of a good singing technique, from stance, posture and breath-control through to the essentials of unaccompanied (‘a cappella’) close harmony singing which is the essence of Barbershop, how to blend your voice with others, and how to help create a unit sound. For work with the chorus, for which there will be plenty of opportunity, the Pilgrimaires’ inspirational chorus director, Elaine Ford, will be in charge. Throughout the course participants will be concentrating on learning two songs which will be new to the chorus as well, so

John said: “You will quickly gain confidence standing among your section, whose voice part will match yours, and who will be there to help if you are struggling. At the conclusion of the course there will be an informal concert at which you can show off your new found skills in front of your friends and families.” The course and the concert will take place at the Pilgrimaires usual rehearsal venue, St. Budeaux Foundation School, Priestley Avenue, Upper St.Budeaux, Plymouth. John added: “The health benefits of choral singing are very well documented, and you will quickly appreciate that singing in chorus is also an immensely sociable and rewarding activity.” If at the end of the course you feel that you would like to be considered for membership of The Pilgrimaires you will be given every encouragement. Pippa: caring for the carers But after Pippa arrived one weekend to discover her Mum had fallen in the night, it was clear there was no way they could continue to live in their home. Pippa did not want her parents separated, so asked them to agree to come and live with her in Plymouth.

Pippa, 55, cared for her mother Doris, who was 91 when she died in late 2013, and her father, Ronald, who was 89 when he died last summer.

Though caring for her parents was something she wanted and chose to do for them, it wasn’t easy.

Pippa cared for both her parents at home through to end of life. Her caring experience feels very raw and both she and her youngest son, Jamie, 14, who was very close to his grandparents, have found there is also much to come to terms with once caring has ended.

“Being a carer is not a job, it’s a way of life. There are carers who are employed by agencies where it is a job and they go home at the end of the day. It’s a huge difference when you are living and caring 24/ 7.

“Aftercare for the carer, when the person they have cared for is gone, is very important as all the agencies, phone calls doorbell ringing stops and you are plummeted into a tunnel of loneliness,” she says.

Pippa said: “Although I am no longer in a caring role, I cared for my parents who came to live with my son and I looked after them for two and a half years. “In the beginning, I nursed my mother back to health from five stone to seven stone, adding another few years with my dad together. They had never been separated in 62 years of marriage apart from hospital admissions.” Pippa’s parents had enjoyed an active retirement in Surrey. When Ronald suffered a series of heart attacks, Doris initially cared for him. But as time went on, it became clear to Pippa and her brother, however, that their Mum was becoming increasingly frail and less able to cope.

Pippa Clewer - Carers UK ambassador

becomes as if you have won the lottery.”

Pippa Clewer is a Carers UK Local Ambassador for the South West. In this voluntary role she helps carers in the Plymouth area to access services and advice.

As maintaining independence was hugely important to her parents, Pippa began making more and more frequent weekend visits doing all that she could to support her parents.

“Physically, mentally and emotionally it began to take its toll on my health - if the carer is not strong in all of this they cannot look after the person they are caring for properly.

“Would I do it again? Yes - but now I know what help there is and where to get it which is why I want to help others.”

“Caring is a very insular life, which becomes over time a problem in itself. Life consists of revolving around the person you are caring for and everyday normality goes out the window for the carer.

Earlier this year Pippa was successfully appointed as a Carers UK volunteer Local Ambassador, helping reach out to carers in the local area and make sure they know about help available.

Do you or does someone you know need some Extra Help?

Many of our clients are first referred to us by their families, as they are struggled with looking after an elderly relative, as well as managing their own commitments. They are concerned about their loved one, and are looking for a company which they can trust, to help assist them. This is where Extra Help services step in. Very often the elderly will need support with tasks such as shopping, ironing or meal preparation; and may also require transport to GP or outpatient appointment. Which we can assist with. How the process works…. When we receive a phone call from a concerned family member we always book a free initial appointment, so that we can go and meet with the family and discuss their requirements. If they decide to go ahead with the service, we match them with a home helper and then arrange a second visit so that they can meet their new home helper We would then agree on a date for the service to begin. We aim to keep our clients with the same home helper each visit, as this provides consistency, which we believe to be important. All of our home helpers are friendly, reliable, fully referenced and police/DBS checked – for that extra piece of mind. “The once a week visit by Extra Help has provided invaluable assistance in the care of my father for the last 18 months. Not only was the helper of great help she became a good friend to my father and he always looked forward to her visit.”

9-15 June 2014

Carers Hub celebrating carers in Plymouth Carers Week is a UK-wide annual awareness campaign which is taking place from Monday June 9 to Sunday June 15. Its aim is to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for.

people who are missing out on services that can help them with their caring role. The very nature of caring - of being there for a loved one facing ill health or disability - means too often people don’t at first, or sometimes ever, identify themselves as carers and, therefore, miss out on support.

This year, Carers Week sees the launch of the Carers Week Quest – an exciting new initiative to encourage organisations and individuals in local communities to work together to reach out to Carers. The Carers Hub that is run in partnership by Plymouth Guild, Age UK Plymouth and Crossroads Care, has been selected to carry this out in Plymouth.

The Carers Hub will be working with Plymouth City Council, Derriford Hospital, Colebrook South West, Time bank, Plymouth Involvement and Participation Services (PIPS) the Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK Plymouth, SEAP Advocacy services, The Carers Forum, Oak house foods, Plymouth Options, Mount Gould Local Care Centre, Plymouth Parent Partnership, Focus Oral Health CIC, Local GP Practices, Plymouth Libraries, Sainsbury’s and Wolferstans Solicitors to provide activities and events.

MONEY MA££ERS with Steve Carey

The business of football... Bill Shankly once said, “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” I’m not sure I agree with that, but football does attract a huge amount of press coverage and comment these days. Much of the recent coverage has focussed on the money aspects. We’ve seen fines for clubs who broke FIFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, a massive increase in the premier league (EPL) prize money, and now we are just a few days away from the World Cup, with its attendant coverage on the costs of new stadia, television rights etc. The current EPL TV deal alone is worth £5.5bn (yes that’s billion!) over three years. In broad terms the EPL gets £3bn for domestic TV rights, £2bn for overseas rights, and £0.5bn for highlights (on Match of the Day for example). 50% of the UK TV rights money is shared equally among the 20 clubs. (That’s £25m each every year!)

TARGETED, AFFORDABLE, EFFECTIVE

25% is shared by reference to finishing position, with each place earning £1.2m. So if you finish bottom, you get £1.2m, 2nd bottom receives £2.4m, right up to the

champions who get a whopping £24m. The balance is paid out at a rate of £75,000 each time your team’s match is shown live (subject to a minimum payment of £750,000 for the season). Overseas TV rights income is shared equally (that’s about £33m each, every year). So my team (Spurs since you ask!), will receive a minimum pay out of £76.75m (no comments about which players they should buy please!). Even the lowest placed club will earn more (£63m) in 2013/14 than the 2012/13 champions (Man Utd – remember them?) who got £60.1m. In contrast, Plymouth Argyle compete in League 2, and finished 10th (a big improvement on last year, even if we hoped for much more at one point). Despite the huge difference in income, they are also subject to EUFA’s FFP rules. As far as Argyle is concerned, there are no restrictions on the amount of loss they can incur, but they are only allowed to spend 55% of their turnover on wages. If they break this limit, they can face a transfer ban i.e. they are not allowed to bring in any further players. This lasts until they can demonstrate that they are not breaking the rules. Turnover is not defined in the traditional way. In addition to the match day income,

sponsorship and TV rights income (including any merit payments), the FFP rules allow donations from owners and cash raised by issuing shares. (This is not permitted in the Premiership nor the Championship). So why should we care? If we want our team to be successful, we need to attract the best players available. These come at a cost, so the more we can do as a city to generate revenue for Plymouth Argyle, the more they can spend, the better the players, and hopefully, the better the results and final league position.

The Plymouth Shopper

A highly-successful campaign to recruit healthcare assistants to Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust has been shortlisted for a national award.

The Recruitment and Resourcing Team, who are based in the Norwich Union building at Derriford, have been shortlisted down to the final three in the the Health Services Journal award for strategic approach to recruitment of the national Healthcare People Management Association (HPMA) Excellence in HRM (Human Resource Management Awards 2014. The HPMA Excellence Awards have been recognising and rewarding outstanding work in healthcare human resource management for over 20 years. Winning projects, large and small, have made a real difference to patient care and influenced HR practice in healthcare and beyond. The shortlisting reflects the hard work of the Recruitment and Resourcing Team to redesign their approach to recruiting healthcare sssistants, which resulted in the appointment of more than 120 new members of staff; many of these staff have achieved a qualification and full clinical competence sign-off, a reduction in the recruitment time and also a reduction in the amount spent on agency staffing. Karen Launder, recruitment and resourcing Manager at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We recognised we needed to develop a new recruitment strategy to address a gap we had in our establishment of healthcare assistants within the Trust. “The new strategy enabled the Trust to identify suitable applicants based on their attitude and behaviours in line with the Trust’s values and their ability to demonstrate a positive and caring attitude with evident passion for delivering healthcare in the local community.

Back row: Laura Crossfield (senior recruitment & resourcing advisor), David Sanderson (recruitment & resourcing administrator), Mandy Johnson (learning & development trainer), Kelly Crocker (recruitment & resourcing administrator), Laura Porritt (recruitment & resourcing assistant). Front row: Vicky Harry (senior recruitment & resourcing advisor), Karen Launder (recruitment & resourcing manager), Erin Horrell (recruitment & resourcing administrator), Lucy Elliott (recruitment & resourcing assistant)

“We set ourselves a target of recruiting 100 whole time equivalent healthcare assistants with a three month target date from advert to appointment. Those healthcare sssistants who were able to demonstrate, through interview, that they possessed the Trust’s values and behaviours, but were unable to demonstrate the clinical skills were put through a comprehensive in-house training package to ensure compliance with national educational and training standards.” The team arranged for an external advert to be promoted via NHS Jobs, supported by a news release to all local media, promoting two Open Days, which all potential applicants were invited to attend. The Open Days consisted of a series of presentations about the role and the Trust, including ‘A day in the life of a healthcare assistant’ and a welcome from the director of nursing. Following these presentations, the candidates had the opportunity to ask questions. Those that remained were then

interviewed by senior nursing staff, with all questions designed to ascertain the candidates’ values. These interviews were supported by the skills for health numeracy and literacy tests, in order to recognise areas of support, if required. Karen continued: “Our new approach to the recruitment of healthcare assistants was successfully implemented without budget or advertising costs. “The semi-annual campaigns reduce the recruitment time spent by clinical nurse managers by two thirds and the vacancy to appointment time has been reduced by six weeks, thus reducing agency spend. Karen travelled to London, along with Sam Rafferty, head of nursing, to present their case and explain why they should win. They now have to wait until later this month to find out whether they have won. The winners will be announced on Thursday June 26 at a ceremony at The Brewery, Chiswell St, London.

The Plymouth Shopper

Bang goes the PH-eory! A team of budding Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP) scientists struck just the right balance when they won second place in a regional chemistry competition.

The students were up against tough competition from 15 other schools across the south west, including grammar and independent schools, at Plymouth University’s Festival of Chemistry. The four Year 8 students were selected to represent MAP following an in-house competition. This included a test and problemsolving a challenge, where students produced a process to separate household waste. The MAP students then went onto the regional competition where they impressed the judges by solving a pH challenge, coming up with a method that reliably reproduced the colours of the rainbow.

This won them second place. A panel of three Plymouth University scientists scrutinised the two competitions MAP took part in. Their judgements were based on how well each team solved a technical problem, worked together and their methodology. The students, Kyle Evans, Andrei Stroe, Kate Marsh, Agneszka Zmundzinska, enjoyed the spirit of friendly competition as well

Exploring the magnificent depths... Plymouth is home to several nationally rare species of coral and sponges, which are an equally rare privilege to see. Every year basking sharks pass on their annual migration. It is quite common to dive with dolphins, sharks, whales and seals.

It’s been likened to being in outer space. You are weightless, surviving on your own resources in an alien environment and seeing sights only a few have been privileged enough to witness.

The club was formed in 1963 in the early days of recreational scuba diving when everything was on a make-your-own basis. Its first boathouse was in the sheds under Madeira Road, close to Mayflower steps.

It is the fantastic underwater world denied to most of us. It is the two thirds of the planet covered in ocean – full of strange creatures and plants with bizarre lifestyles. Incredibly beautiful life forms from the microscopic to the monstrous.

Under threat of redevelopment, the club was one of the founding groups that raised the £4m funds to change the old RAF Mount Batten into a centre designed to make the magnificent Sound more accessible to all.

We can’t all be shot off in a rocket but must of us can go scuba diving. What makes it all the more accessible for the people of Plymouth is having some of the world’s best dives, and the world’s most magnificent sea creatures, right on the doorstep.

These days diving equipment is high tech and boats are packed with modern electronics. The club provides not only compressed air but a range of different gases that help make diving both safer and more adventurous.

Where there is good diving, there is usually a good dive club – and that is Plymouth Sound branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club. It has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and this year has relaunched its training programme for newcomers to the sport. The Mount Batten-based club has booked monthly pool sessions to train people to dive from scratch and has a range of qualified instructors up to national level. Equipment is all provided and the club is applying for grant funding for more gear.

come along for a have-a-go session before making up your mind. A try-dive only costs £15 with everything provided for you, a certificate at the end, and a refund if you decide on a further course. Plymouth Sound dive club’s home is Mount Batten Watersports Centre, where it has its own premises close to a launching slipway. It runs two state-of-the-art rigid hulled inflatable boats. The club dives 12 months of the year due to its unique waterfront setting and can accommodate up to 20 divers at a time. It organises a range of away trips and holidays as well as regular dives to local world class dives sites like the Scylla artificial reef, the Eddystone, as well as many famous wartime wrecks.

Treasurer Mark Prior, who has been a member for more than 20 years, said: “The club has real strength in depth in terms of training and diving, a reflection of our closeness to the water. We have trained divers who have not only proved passionate about the sport but have forged careers in many marine industries on the back of their experiences with us. “We pride ourselves on the quality of diving we run and the quality of divers who make up our membership. We have rules to ensure we accommodate every sort of diving and diver, from the shallowest reef, to underwater photography, to full blown deep technical diving using mixed gases. One of the best things I ever did was join Plymouth Sound.” The club meets every Monday at Mount Batten Centre in Plymstock, where anyone interested in diving is welcome to come and talk to some of its 70 members. Pool sessions are at Plympton on Monday evenings. Information and bookings can be made through training officer Pete Flaxman on 07753911620, or Steve Pittaway, on 07811301519. THE CHRIS COLE

Remembering the heroism of Sir Ernest Shackleton One of the most heroic polar expeditions will be celebrated in Plymouth in August. It was in August 1914 that Sir Ernest Shackleton set sail from Millbay Docks in his ship The Endurance to head to the South Pole. He planned a new ambitious expedition to cross the Antarctic from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea, via the South Pole. Unfortunately the Endurance became trapped in the Weddell Sea ice, was then crushed and sank. Shackleton inspired his men to survive by first leading them over the ice and then in small boats to Elephant Island. Most of them stayed there for four winter months sheltering under two upturned boats in the harshest of conditions with the bare minimum to survive. Shackleton then miraculously sailed a 22 foot whaler across 800 nautical miles of the roughest ocean in the world to South Georgia to raise the alarm. By then the expedition had lasted two years and Shackleton showed remarkable leadership qualities by accompanying a rescue boat to retrieve the 22 stranded men on Elephant Island. The following year he accompanied the rescue ship which reached the Ross Sea Party which was awaiting his overland arrival across the continent. The centenary of the remarkable expedition will be marked with the Shackleton 100 event between August 6 and 8 at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, which is where Shackleton spent his last night before setting sail on The Endurance on August 8 1914. The celebration has been organised by the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society in partnership with Plymouth University and is expected to attract hundreds of polar enthusiasts, scientists, direct descendants of Shackleton and his crew, members of the James Caird Society - which was established to honour the leadership and achievements of Shackleton – and VIPs. The guest of honour will be the Hon Alexandra Shackleton, grand-daughter of Sir Ernest. At midday on August 8 2014 there will be a reenactment of the departure by the historic sailing ship Phoenix from Clyde Quay in Millbay Docks with a display by the Plymouth Pipe Band and the Antarctic Adventurers.

Experience

Demonstrating the real love of Jesus Christ

“Jesus is ideal and wonderful, but you Christians - you are not like him. I like your Christ, I do not like you Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” So said Mahatma Ghandi, the father of the then new independent India. Dr Martin Luther King respected Ghandi for his commitment to peaceful resistance and saw from Ghandi’s life how to mobilise and encourage the civil rights movement in the USA with courageous, yet peaceful, demonstration, often at great cost physically to the demonstrators. In a way, Ghandi’s life modelled the principles of Jesus Christ, and when he went on hunger strike in order to stop the bloodletting of Hindus and Muslims in India, Ghandi demonstrated an example of Christ through his personal sacrifice. Today, globally, Christians are suffering very real persecution. At a meeting in the House of Lords a few years back, a persecuted pastor from Sudan said to the assembled meeting of national Christian leaders: “Please do not devalue the cost of our faith, truly lived out within our persecuted communities, by the compromise of your faith in the West not lived out correctly according to the teachings of Jesus Christ.” The Christian faith is a faith that encourages its adherents to become like its founder, Jesus Christ. The foundation of this faith is the mystery of the ‘cross’ which illustrates a life moving from spiritual death to spiritual life, by encouraging us all to pick up our own cross daily and understand that we all have a destiny and purpose in God. Real love does have the ability to absorb people’s brokenness and abuse, often at a real cost to the person manifesting the grace and love. This isn’t a soft option as some people would believe.

In other words we should not be surprised, as Christians, when life becomes difficult and challenging because it is often through these conflicts that the Kingdom of God is revealed through our lives, both individually and corporately. At this same meeting in the House of Lords it was agreed that the Christian Church in the West isn’t being persecuted, but it is being marginalised. This is in comparison with those fellow believers, estimated to be 160,000 a year, who surrender their earthly lives around the world for their eternal hope through real martyrdom. In other words ‘faith in Jesus Christ is more important than life itself.’ Christians are often the first ‘bible’ people will read. People need to see how we live as Christians in the good and the bad times. To live life well, we must understand that the eternal perspective of life is more important than the years we live down here. So why is this world view so important to us as Christians? Because without understanding the gift of life from God’s perspective, we won’t understand the ‘spiritual revelation’ that without free will and free choice there is no ability to really understand real love, which is the currency of the eternal Kingdom. Verses in 1 Corinthians 13 state:

“If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship/martyrdom that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.”

The only real competition that stops us truly loving each other as Christ commanded in life is the darkness in our own personal hearts and minds.

Prior to the re-enactment a plaque marking the centenary will be unveiled at Millbay by the Hon Alexandra Shackleton.

Lottery funding boost for history festival

She will perform a similar unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the hotel on the first night of the event.

Plymouth’s History Festival, now in its second year, has received an extra funding boost thanks to a grant of £44,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

range of events taking place throughout the month have also now been made possible.

The festival ran until the end of May and there are more than 120 events on the programme.

“Events this year took place in many different locations – from the city centre, Hoe and Barbican to the Royal William Yard, the Millfields and many of the suburbs. Venues range from church halls and guildhalls to civic buildings and historic houses.

Other activities will include a formal centenary dinner on August 7, along with a programme of talks and discussions. Jon Morcom, director of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting such a prestigious programme of activities. The Devon and Cornwall Polar Society meet regularly at the hotel and last year staged a special event as part of the Duke’s 150th anniversary.” Tickets are available for the centenary dinner and also the various talks which will be taking place. For more information call The Duke of Cornwall Hotel on 01752 275850 or visit www.thedukeofcornwall. co.uk or www.devonandcornwallpolarsociety.org.uk

Set up in 2013, the festival brings a number of historical events taking place in the city together under one banner. The events aim to provide residents and visitors with a focal point for celebrating and discovering Plymouth’s unique heritage. The HLF grant will see the appointment of a project co-ordinator who will evaluate this year’s festival and help organise and manage next year’s programme too. The funding will also be used to support a three-day film and photography festival at the Guildhall, Armada Way. ‘Three Towns in Focus’ will be a celebration of archive and contemporary film and photography in Plymouth over the past 100 years. Restoring two memorial plaques, creating a war memorial trail and website and commissioning a photographic archive project that will record the wide

“Last year’s History Festival was a big success and it’s a real achievement to have been able to bring it back again,” said Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith.

“The festival was already brilliant but the support we are now receiving from the HLF means that we will be able to do even more – as well as look forward to our plans for 2015.”

Legally Speaking By Greg Yates of Howard & Over Solicitors

Collaborative way has real strengths In my article last month I spoke about the substantial changes that were happening to family law and how the courts deal with family disputes. It is interesting to see how solicitors and the court are working out how to work the new systems. Old and familiar phrases have been replaced with new words and a new approach. Under the new system, as I explained, people are strongly encouraged to try mediation before going to court. I still think the emphasis is on too much compulsion for this route but we will see what happens. What is strange is that, although mediation is being promoted, another way of avoiding court proceedings is not being publicised. That is working collaboratively. This is a system whereby, instead of going to court, the separating couple resolve matters by a series of meetings with their solicitors who are especially trained collaborative lawyers. I am both a mediator and a collaborator and of the two methods of resolving conflict I do prefer collaborative. In the collaborative process everybody (including the solicitors) agree that they will only go to court to implement an agreement. The agenda is chosen by the couple with input from the lawyers. During the meetings the lawyers provide comprehensive information about the law to enable the couple to reach their own solution. The couple work out what financial information they require discussing options to resolve issues. If an expert is required they agree on the choice of expert and his or her role. The couple have complete control of the agenda and so can discuss a variety of matters within a meeting. They can completely depart from the agenda if they wish (for example a children matter becomes relevant). This is far more flexible than the court system. My experience is that in these meetings the discussions are wide ranging, with options being explored in a way that does not happen in the court system. If the collaborative process does break down then the parties have to change law firms and start again. I am happy to say that, so far, I have not had one fail and speaking with my collaborative colleagues it is clear the success rate is very high. The speed of the process is directed by the couple. My experience to date is that the cases have concluded far quicker and much cheaper than any court process. Clearly this system may not be for everybody. The couple have to understand the process and commit to it. Legal Aid is not available for collaborative work unlike mediation. However, many people are not financially eligible for legal aid. If anybody did want to explore this further please contact me and I will happily discuss it with you further at the free initial interview that we offer all our clients. Boost for seagrass growth initiative One of the National Marine Aquarium’s key research projects has received a boost following a donation from Devon & Cornwall Police. Confiscated equipment previously used for growing cannabis illegally will now be put to use for growing seagrass, as part of the Community Seagrass Initiative. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), this three-year project aims to help conserve native seagrass and seahorses, getting the human communities that live around seagrass beds involved with the communities of marine life that thrive on the beds themselves. The range of lighting solutions, growing trays and growing mediums donated by Devon & Cornwall Police will be used to grow and

study seagrass at close range, enabling project staff to gain a better understanding of its importance to the range of marine wildlife, including native seahorse species for which it is an important habitat. Mark Parry, project development officer for the Community Seagrass Initiative, said: “Seagrass beds, and the animals that rely on them for food and shelter, face a number of threats from pollution, coastal development and disturbance by vessels, as well as natural factors including disease and storms. “This generous donation from Devon & Cornwall Police will enable us to grow our own seagrass for further study, all contributing to our ultimate aim of protecting these threatened species.” Mike Clayton, property store supervisor for Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to assist the National

Marine Aquarium with its research through donating confiscated equipment previously used for drugs manufacture. “We always aim to work closely with our local community, and this project will see the equipment put to very good use to help with marine conservation, rather than having to be disposed of by ourselves.” Josh McCarty, marketing manager at the National Marine Aquarium, added: “We are very grateful to Devon & Cornwall Police for their kind donation to the Community Seagrass Initiative. “Seagrass habitats are of vital importance to the wildlife living in and around them, so it is great to be receiving support from other members of our regional community and be working together to connect with and protect our marine environment through this new project.”

waterfront up to Blockhouse Park in Stoke.

The Council’s Licensing Committee has given the goahead for a public consultation on a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) covering Marlborough Street, Devonport and the surrounding area. The area would extend from Mount Wise

Anyone refusing to comply would be committing an offence and could face arrest and a fine of up to £500.

If granted, the order would not lead to a complete ban on drinking in the parks, but would enable the police to ask people to stop drinking where alcoholrelated nuisance is likely.

Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This is not about spoiling the enjoyment of people would may

be having a glass or two of wine in the park who are clearly not going to be a nuisance to those around them. “The police are asking for these powers to prevent problems caused by street drinkers who openly drink large quantities of alcohol, cause a noise nuisance and intimidate other people. The order would enable officers to intervene and prevent problems escalating into criminal offences.”

and at First Stop reception at the Civic Centre. The consultation will continue until the end of June. The Council will also leaflet every household and business in the area. The information pack will also be available at St Aubyn Library in Chapel Street, Welcome Hall, Fore Street and Devonport Guildhall in Ker Street.

The public consultation started in May when full details were made available on the council’s website

Memories of Marshall Ware and D-Day June 6 2014 will mark 70 years since American soldiers left Saltash Passage to take part in the D Day landings. Recently, the council contacted me because they wanted to erect an information board in the area celebrating the event. The board will also feature photos of the troops. Many people will know that I’ve put quite a few photos of the American soldiers leaving the passage on my Flickr site which can be found at www.flickr.com/ derektaitoldphotos so I was happy to help.

Writer Derek Tait reflects on the 70th anniversary of American troops leaving St Budeaux for the D-Day landings. Derek has had many books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk several garages so I rented one from him. From that moment on, Marshall told me a lot about the area, lent me his books and showed me photos and cuttings that he had collected over the years. He remembered well the American troops being stationed in Saltash Passage and said that they’d used his field at the Kloof to store their vehicles.

While searching through photos, I came across the picture, shown here, of St Budeaux historian, Marshall Ware, complete with the route signs used by the US troops in 1944. I first met Marshall by chance in the late 1990s. A half-witted neighbour took pleasure in scratching cars and puncturing tyres (you know who you are) and I heard that Marshall had

When they left, the route signs were left in his shed where they lay for another 50 years. I believe that after Marshall was interviewed by the Herald and had his photo taken, the signs were donated to the Royal Albert Inn but it’s a mystery where they are today. Marshall’s father, James Ware, on the quay at Saltash Passage

Marshall also told me that the troops had used the patch of land on the corner of Saltash Passage,

Troops leaving for D Day from Saltash Passage

at the bottom of Normandy Hill. The area has now since been built on. There was also a huge oil tank in the old orchard which was adjacent to the horse field at the Kloof. This has long since disappeared and several houses are being built on the spot at the moment. People who read my columns regularly will know that I’ve already written about the American troops leaving Saltash Passage so I won’t go into the story too much this time. I’ve also written before how Marshall had the first car in Saltash Passage and while walking through the Kloof recently, I found an old number plate, ‘ARM 963’, which appears to have lain there for well over 50 years. Could this be from Marshall’s car? I learned a lot from Marshall over the years and when he died, his wife, Sally, kindly gave me his books, cuttings and photos, some of which appear in these columns and in my own books. In a way, the person who vandalised my car did me a great favour although I’m sure that wasn’t the intention. Anyway, on the 70th anniversary, I’ll not only be thinking of the American soldiers, many who fought and lost their lives, but also of Marshall Ware who meant so much to the area.

Seven editions reaching 62,000 homes

Kaiser Chiefs head for Plymouth ‘MTV Crash’ Chart-topping British band Kaiser Chiefs are the first act to be announced for this summer’s eagerly awaited MTV Crashes Plymouth event.

The spectacular live music event, being organised by MTV in collaboration with Plymouth City Council, will take place on Plymouth Hoe on Tuesday July 15. After 10,000 tickets were snapped

up by Plymouth residents in minutes, 5,000 more tickets went on national release on Friday 9 May, giving music fans another opportunity to see massive names play the one-off gig.

The Brit Award-winning Kaiser Chiefs, who are riding high on the success of their number one album ‘Education, Education, Education & War’, are looking forward to

performing on Plymouth’s stunning waterfront. Ricky Wilson said: “We’re looking forward to this gig. Plymouth Hoe looks a pretty great spot to play.” Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We’re delighted that Kaiser Chiefs are coming – they are a great act. More announcements are on the way.”

Local musicians to take part in event on MTV stage Local artists, bands and community groups are being given a chance to perform on the massive MTV Crashes Plymouth stage, the day after the main event. Plymouth City Council has secured use of the main stage to hold a community music evening on Wednesday July 16. The free event will run from 5pm to 10.30pm and will be open to the public, so anyone who was unable to secure tickets for the MTV Crashes Plymouth show will get the opportunity to experience another great music event. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We’re really excited to be holding the MTV Crashes Plymouth event this

July, but it was really important for us to secure the use of the big stage for our local bands and musicians to be able part of this. “We’re also delighted that it’s happening the day after the MTV event as there will be a massive buzz in the city and hopefully our local talented musicians will make the most of it.” Performance slots will vary from 15 minutes to 30 minutes and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Anyone interested in performing should complete and return the application form as soon as possible. Fo details contact the council’s events team on 01752 306849.

MTV Crashes Plymouth is one of the highlights in the city’s Three Towns centenary celebrations. It will be broadcast on MTV’s flagship UK music TV channels MTV Music and MTV Live HD and subsequently across its other music channels, showcasing Britain’s Ocean City in over 35 countries. As well as live coverage of the performances, MTV will be screening interviews with the acts, filmed in various Plymouth locations. Further acts will be added to the line-up. For the latest news follow @ MTVPlymouth on Twitter or visit the What’sOnPlymouth Facebook page.

A group of 25 Year 9 students from St Boniface’s took part in an interactive field trip at Plymouth’s Apple Store in Drake Circus.

Students from St Boniface’s clearly enjoyed their visit to the Apple Store in Drake Circus which included plenty of ‘hands-on’ experiences

Working with GarageBand and iMovie projects using iPads the St Boniface’s Catholic College boys made their own piece of music followed by a short movie in teams. Each student was presented with an Apple Field Trip T-shirt, USB wristband with their work and a certificate. The students used GarageBand to play simulated instruments, adding loops and sound effects to produce their own music track that was saved then used in their iMovie project, which involved them acting, dancing and singing to the device’s camera. 14-year-old Alusché Latuka said the day was “so fun and we made an amazing film using the iPads - it’s inspired me to want to make my own films over the summer holiday!”, whilst Oscar Lingham said “I really enjoyed using the GarageBand app - I made some great music in just a few taps... it’s a great way to show off my creativity.” The 25 students have all opted for GCSE Computer Science when they begin Year 10 in September.
