Supermarket chain Lidl has submitted its plans for a new neighbourhood store on the former Megabowl site in Plympton. The proposals were submitted at the end of July, with the consultation period closing at the end of August.

a further 560 signing an online petition. Letters and e-mails from individuals supporting Lidl have also been received.

If planning approval is granted, work is expected to start later this year with the new store opening in 2015.

A number of local residents have objected to the proposals, mainly on the grounds that the new stores will create more traffic problems in Cot Hill, Merafield Road and Plymouth Road.

In addition to the 11,500 sq ft Lidl food store, the application includes the construction of a similar sized Home Bargains store. The plan allows for nearly 150 parking spaces on the site. Home Bargains is a variety discount retailer selling branded goods at discounted prices. Its range includes household products, health and beauty, toys and games, pet food, home furnishings and limited clothing range. The new developments will create an estimated 70 new jobs. The Lidl proposal has received overwhelming support from the local community with more than 1,400 people signing a petition in favour of the plan and

The proposals allow for a left turn only into the Lidl store from Plymouth Road, with traffic leaving via an exit onto Plymouth Road. A firm of transport specialists commissioned by Lidl have confirmed that the development complies with both national and local policies and provides ample opportunity via foot, cycle, public transport and motor cars. Lidl carried out an extensive consultation process in June, during which local residents were invited to view the plans and comment on the proposed planning application. Members of the Lidl property team were on hand to answer questions or concerns.

Appeal for more school governors in Plympton Several schools in Plympton are looking to recruit governors.

A campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the important role of school governors and the vital need to recruit more volunteers. Adam Balzano of an organisation called School Governors One Stop Shop said that there were currently more than 100 governor vacancies across 50 schools in Plymouth. They had been approached by Plymouth City Council to help in the recruitment campaign. Plymouth City Council runs an extensive governor training programme covering topics such as accountability, evaluation and monitoring and roles and responsibilities. Adam, interviewed by Andrew Hill on Hospital Radio Plymouth, said: “There is always a need for school governors and Plymouth is not unique in having so many vacancies.” He revealed that Hele’s School currently has five governor vacancies, Old Primary Junior Academy four vacancies and Boringdon Primary School and Longcause Community Special School one vacancy each. Adam said that governors were usually required to attend around three meetings each term - involving a total commitment of between six and 10 hours. He said that prospective governors did not have to have children at the relevant school or live within the catchment area. “A desire and enthusiasm to do something for education is the main requirement,” he added. Anyone interested in becoming a governor can contact Plymouth City Council on 01752 307480 or visit www.becomeagovernor.com.

plus. We meet for rehearsals every week and take part in a whole range of events, such as the Lord Mayor’s Day, the Wolseley fun day and also put on two big shows every year.”

The All Stars Theatre Group was formed by Plympton couple David and Janet Halifax 10 years ago when they struggled to find activities for their disabled daughter Emma, who is now 34.

“We would love to do more, but without more volunteers and more finance, there is only so much we can do.”

Janet, a retired psychiatric nurse, said: “We have 20 people in the group at the moment aged from 21 up to 60

Flowers and fond memories of Karen Mike and Theresa Daley opened their beautiful garden in Colebrook to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice in August in memory of beloved friend, Karen Rodda who died in 2010, aged only 37. Karen was an adventurous person who loved life, travelled the world and made a great contribution to the world of social work.

Story by Eliza Stevens and friends are also regulars: ‘We love it, I am just nosey!’ St Luke’s open garden scheme has gone from strength to strength over recent years; there are now 25 households in and around Plymouth taking part in the event over the summer, ranging from country houses to private back yards. The three Colebrook households involved on this one weekend raised over £900 through their garden trail, which included a raffle and delicious tea and cakes.

This was the latest in a series of fundraising events put on by friends and colleagues.

Theresa said: “St Luke’s were really supportive to Karen; she Karen Rodda - passed away in 2010 loved gardening so this is a The season is not over: you can good tribute and a lovely way of saying thank you. Gordon and Lisa Collingwood go to open gardens on most summer weekends.

Lisa said: “It is a lovely thing to do, we have been all over. You meet nice people and pick up ideas for your own garden. Ordinary homes and gardens are much more interesting than stately homes.” Marian Metters

Janet added: “We would love to run another two groups but without more volunteers and more funds it is just not possible. It costs around £4500 a year to run the group: every weekly session costs us around £40.” Their work is not all about theatre performances. They recently produced a special self-help DVD for people with learning difficulties called ‘Help them to Help You’. It provides helpful advice and information on how to deal with a whole range of issues, such as dealing with noisy neighbours, applying for bus passes, contacting the police in the event of bullying, returning goods to a shop and hospital passports. The DVD was funded by Devon Community Foundation and supported by Plymouth City Council, Devon & Cornwall Police, Talbys of Plympton, Ridleys and Bay Training. Members of the All Stars Group are featured in the DVD. The DVD can be found on YouTube and can also be purchased for £15 including postage and packing.

All Stars are always grateful for any help or financial support. “We have a lot of individual sponsors who give us small amounts on a regular basis, but we would appreciate more financial assistance.” David and Janet were delighted recently when David Richardson of Plympton-based Richardson Legal Services offered to sponsor the group. David had helped the couple with wills and trusts to provide financial protection for Emma in the future and Janet decided to invite him and his partner Alison along to their 10th anniversary production.

“The performances really help boost their selfconfidence. Some of them could hardly speak when they first joined and now they can sing and dance and tell jokes at ease,” added David, a retired retail manager.

Janet added: “There is a lot of ignorance and misunderstanding around the whole issue of people with learning disabilities and we would love to run a programme in schools to help youngsters understand the needs of vulnerable people who often can’t speak for themselves.”

She said that members of the group are given CDs so that they can learn their songs and dance routines and the ‘great bunch’ of volunteers coach the group in their performances.

David Richardson said: “The show was absolutely fantastic. Some of the members of the group have difficulty speaking, yet they danced and sang and told jokes.”

Marian Metters with friends Joan Brown and Sylvia Collings

“The group is a very worthy cause and they have difficulty finding funding, despite the fact they have 200 adults with learning difficulties on their waiting list. I was delighted to offer my support and a share of our profits will now go to the group to help them provide this fantastic service and to continue to put on shows.”

Council playing fields in Plymstock have been handed over to a community sports club as part of the Council’s commitment to give valued assets back to the community. Horsham Playing Fields have now been officially transferred to the trustees of Plymstock Albion Oaks Rugby Football Club. It is the first Community Asset Transfer to be completed under the council’s ‘community asset transfer’ policy. Now a new era is set to begin for the club that will allow it to instigate improvements to the pavilions and playing fields to make it a more welcoming place for local people and visiting teams. The club previously leased the site under a long lease, but was unable to attract external funding for improving the site because of the lease’s conditions. A revised long lease has now been agreed which will enable the club to secure funding. Ownership of the club under a community asset transfer involves giving local people and community groups more control over where they live and the facilities near them.

Tanner-J Dance

The transfer has given the club certainty, which in turn attracts funding. It means the club can embark on its long-term plans to make their facilities on the 22-acre site better. The club plans to:

Whatever you go on to do in life, that experience will stand you in good stead.” Classes range from £60 - £70 per term (roughly £6 per class). Busy programme at Ford Park Cemetery There is a busy programme of events at Ford Park Cemetery in September. The current exhibition People of Plymouth 1914 continues until September 21 and is open to view on Tuesday and Thursday 10.30am to 3.30 pm, Saturday and Sunday 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Admission is free (donations welcome). The annual ‘Moth and Bat Walk’ takes place on September 5. Meet at the visitor centre for 7-30pm. The weekend of September 13 and 14 heralds the Heritage Open weekend, when the people of Plymouth have the chance to have a guided walk of Ford Park’s 34 acre grounds. The walks will take in the the monuments and stories of important local people buried at Ford Park Cemetery, its military graves, the history of the cemetery and the symbolism carved into the headstones by Victorian craftsmen. There will also be the opportunity to visit the restored Gothic revival Victorian chapel, and see the memorial wall dedicated to Plymouth’s civilian Blitz victims. There will also be an opportunity to join the Children’s puzzle trial, taking families around the grounds looking for clues. These can be obtained from the cafe in the visitor centre which will be open from 12.30pm to 4pm on both days. The exhibition will also be open to view. Tours of the grounds will start at 2pm on each day with a maximum of 40 people per tour. Continuing the commemoration of the Great War, there will be a ‘World War 1 Singalong’ on September 27 presented by Rod Pickles. The evening will include poetry readings, musical interludes and a singalong to favourite songs of the period. Tickets for the event cost £7 (to include refreshments) and are available from the Cemetery office by calling in or phoning 01752 665442 (weekdays only 10am to 3.30pm.

Family Fun Day for military community Charity fundraisers have been supporting the military community by raising vital funds for the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) with a family fun day on Sunday September 7. The event is to be held at the China Fleet Country Club from 11am until 3pm. Entertainment includes a bouncy castle, face painting, penalty shoot out, arts and crafts, raffle, a special appearance from Mr Wishy Washy and much more. Cheryl Muir and Katie O’Brien who are organising the event said: “Supporting organisations such as the DMWS is crucial in maintaining the wellbeing and moral of our armed forces and their families.” DMWS provides practical and emotional support to on average 10,000 armed forces personnel and their families every year. Visiting patients in hospitals, rehabilitation and recovery centres, they help by providing a listening ear, sorting out clothes and toiletries, arranging accommodation for visiting families and providing support to the bereaved and the terminally ill. DMWS is also unique in that they are the only military charity and civilian welfare organisation to deploy to areas of conflict and currently have staff based in the field hospital in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan. Money raised will ensure this vital service continues. For more information on Cheryl and Katie’s event in Plymouth, email : cherylmuir09@yahoo.co.uk or visit the Facebook event page ‘Family Fun Day DMWS’ If you would like to raise funds for DMWS it couldn’t be easier – to register for a fundraising pack full of ideas, tips and advice call 01264 774000. 8

Auction of sunfish statues at National Marine Aquarium

Plymouth’s very own sculpture trail, Making Waves will bid farewell to the city in September, but members of the public have the chance to own a piece of it as the sunfish statues will be sold at auction.

Taking place at the National Marine Aquarium on September 18, the auction will be compered by BBC Radio Devon presenter David Fitzgerald, and aims to raise £25,000, which will be used to support marine conservation programmes. Fourteen of the sunfish statues that have been placed at key sites around the city since March will go under the hammer, while the 15th statue sponsored by the National Marine Aquarium ‘Beneath the Surface’ will be included in a raffle. Tickets to attend the Making Waves auction are available now for £25, which includes entry into the Sunfish statues raffle. Enquiries to attend should be sent to makingwaves@nationalaquarium.co.uk. All funds raised from the Making Waves auction will be used to support marine conservation programmes, including the Ocean Sunfish project being led by the National Marine Aquarium. Sunfish are susceptible to commercial fishing, plastic pollution and global warming; however it is currently unknown to what extent. The funds will allow the Aquarium to investigate changes to the world’s oceans and the consequential Ramblers have now published their walking book “On the beaten track 3” The 3rd book in a popular series of local walks. The Making Waves trail features a series of sunfish statues, designed by Plymouth City Council Apprentices and tells the story of the city through a network of trails. Each statue features individual artwork created by the Making Waves Artists, who were selected by the statue sponsors, which include Brittany Ferries, Plymouth University, National Apprenticeship Service and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Dr David Gibson, Managing Director at the National Marine Aquarium who spearheaded the Making Waves project, commented: “We’re delighted to be hosting the Making Waves auction at the National Marine Aquarium and offer the public the chance to come along and own a piece of the trail. “The sunfish statues have been a welcome addition to the city over the last few months – although we’ll be sad to see them go, we’re thrilled the funds raised will be used to support marine conservation projects, including the Aquarium’s very own Ocean Sunfish project. “We are very grateful to the businesses, designers and teams of apprentices who have helped make this project such a success – and the local residents and visitors to Plymouth who have enjoyed the trail over the last few months. We hope the people of Plymouth will get involved in the auction and help us to achieve our continued ambition of driving marine conservation through engagement.” Plymouth Proprietary Library Writers Group First Saturday of the month Located in the oldest library in Plymouth the group covers a wide range of genres in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Bright new look for zoo’s education space - thanks to Dulux Dartmoor Zoo has created a bright and vibrant new education space for budding zoologists, thanks to paint donated by Dulux Decorator Centre. The zoo, which attracts more than 80,000 visitors a year, will soon be opening its newly-constructed education centre at the heart of the site in Sparkwell.

Volunteers pictured at Dartmoor Zoo

The education centre will play an important role for visiting schools, colleges and clubs in the local area, giving children and adults alike the opportunity to study animals from around the world. Work was carried out in partnership with Plymouth City College’s painting and decorating students, who added the final touches to the building with a choice of attention-grabbing colours from the range of paint at their local Dulux Decorator Centre –

all provided free of charge. Students on the zoo’s primary, secondary and post-16 education programmes will be able to enjoy an eye-catching and multi-functional space with two classrooms and a wide range of exotic species to aid teaching and learning. Beverley Whitehead, marketing manager at Dulux Decorator Centre, commented: “Dulux Decorator Centre has been donating paint to local schools, community groups and charities for many years now, as we are committed to helping local causes and initiatives that brighten up communities. It’s always great to see the completed project and the difference it makes to those involved, especially in such a popular attraction as Dartmoor Zoo.” Coral Higham, head of education at the zoo, added: “We pride ourselves on the quality of our education offered here at Dartmoor Zoo, and this purpose-built centre has been designed to accompany our updated learning programmes, tailored specifically to the new primary and secondary curriculum. We chose bright and vibrant colours to make the building as eye-catching and inspirational as possible, and we’d just like to thank the Dulux Decorator Centre in Plymouth for helping us out.”

Plympton Rotary Club have come to the aid of a local youth football team making a donation of £500 to help replace equipment destroyed in a fire. Following the cheque presentation made at their last meeting to Chaddlewood Miners AFC, Plympton Rotary Club President Darren Hands paid a visit to their home at Hoskins Park where he was greeted by the Under 12s team. The football club lost vital equipment when its storage unit was recently destroyed in an arson attack. Rotary Club president Darren said: “The Rotary Club members immediately agreed to do something to help and agreed to donate £250. Thanks to a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation – Rotary’s own charity – we were then able to double the amount we were able to give. Hopefully this will go some way to

Plympton Rotary Club’s help for youth soccer team hit by arson attack helping them replace the lost equipment.” Teresa Hill, Chaddlewood Miners club welfare officer said: “We would like to thank all involved with the Plympton Rotary Club for helping us fund our U12 goal posts that were destroyed in the fire at Hoskins Park. It is enabling this team to fulfil their fixtures for the beginning of the season”.

‘Ladies Do Latte’ celebrates its fifth anniversary with launch of Plymouth group

When Jo Smallbones invited friends to coffee at Sampson’s Farm near Newton Abbot back in May 2009, she never imagined that she was creating a ladies network brand in the South West.

Celia Delaney of Speaking Success, a Ladies Do Latte member said: “Best £50 I ever spent! Jo has been a fantastic support to my business and I had three ladies come along to my public speaking course after meeting everyone in January. I’ve made my money back ten times over and made incredible friends in the process!”

Five years later ‘Ladies Do Latte’ holds three network groups a month in Plymouth, Exeter and East Devon and South Devon, has over 75 members and has hosted over 100 network events.

Jo Smallbones launched ‘Ladies Do Plymouth’ in February this year. The group meets every third Wednesday of the month at Boringdon Park Golf Course in Plympton from 10am to 12pm.

Dubbed as ‘fun, effective networking and business events for women in and around Devon,’ Jo Smallbones founded Ladies Do Latte with the ethos of building friendships first and the rest will follow.

Jo is excited to bring the network group to the Plymouth area and said: “As the name suggests the ladies meet for coffee once a month to discuss and promote their businesses. Members of Ladies Do Latte come from many different sector backgrounds with one aim - to network and expand their businesses in a productive way.

Due to its initial popularity and reputation for producing good business connections more groups were established based on Jo’s core principles of business growth through contacts and endorsements as people work with people.

“Success stories include ladies making contacts and joining forces by attending events to make their

businesses even bigger and better than before”.

the groups with lots of new people to meet”.

Looking ahead Jo said: “We aim to grow even more and provide yet more opportunities for our ladies so we’re not just stopping at Ladies Do Latte, we will be looking at Ladies Do Lunch, Ladies Do Networking, larger events, supported by media campaigns and bringing together all

The site includes an area of ancient woodland where wild garlic, bluebells and primroses blossom. Tawny owls, woodpeckers and buzzards are amongst the birds found in the trees.

There was face-painting, pond-dipping, poetry writing, a foraging walk and wild cooking. The highlight was the performance of Radford Riches, a radio play by Alan Ramage.

Visitors are welcome at any time to help with the community orchard, follow the fairy trail around the pond or just walk in the woods.

Esme Barratt, aged four, enjoyed searching for creatures in the pond: ‘Daddy used to play here. The best thing is catching stuff’. Rosanna Peacock aged seven spent her time at the craft table: ‘I have made a bird house and got some seeds to take home’.

Kim Armon is a volunteer. She said ‘It is lovely giving something back, this is a beautiful nature reserve. We have to use it and share it’.

Visiting the site (recently designated a nature reserve) brought back memories for some. Joan Hutton said: “I played here and I want my grandchildren to play here too. There are

Situated some eight miles from Plymouth, Yealmpton is a thriving and popular village, of which Yealmpton Stores, the village shop and newsagent, is an integral part. Now, after 10 years of building the business, the current tenants have decided to place Yealmpton Stores up for sale with specialist retail property adviser Christie + Co. The leasehold is being offered at £200,000. Set in the heart of the village, the store is a cornerstone of local life and is well supported by the local inhabitants – the number of which is set to grow with a number of residential building schemes taking place.

With a 450 square foot trading area, Yealmpton Stores offers a variety of different lines, including fresh local food produce. It also operates well-supported newspaper deliveries and has the potential to extend the delivery services to include groceries.

The business also comes with excellent and spacious 2-3 bedroom owners’ accommodation. Jonathan Southgate, of Christie + Co in Exeter, who is handling the sale, said: “Opportunities to acquire successful, profitable businesses like Yealmpton Stores, particularly in a growing location like this, are a rare thing indeed. “A new owner will benefit from an established set-up, with the potential for further growth. As such, we expect strong interest both from existing operators and those seeking a lifestyle business acquisition in the south west of England.” Interested parties should call Jonathan Southgate of Christie + Co on 01392 285600.

Not many teenagers would separate themselves from any sort of internet for three days. Rhiannon Percy, on the other hand, an inspiring 16 year old patient suffering with cancer did just that and raised over £1000 for the Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer Trust Fund in Derriford Hospital. TYAC (Teenagers and Young Adults) Cancer Service bridges the gap between paediatric and adult oncology, with a wide spectrum of cancers being diagnosed in this age group. Louise Percy, Rhiannon’s mum, said: “When Rhiannon came to hospital she was 16 years old. It was extremely difficult to know where to place her, as she wasn’t an adult nor was she a child. She found having a focus point to

go to, Hannah Heayn, a Teenagers & Young Adults Specialist Nurse, made her life much easier and has helped her whilst being unwell. We really appreciate everything that Hannah has done for her.” Hannah Heayn said: “The Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer Service is extremely grateful to Rhiannon and her family for their commitment and generosity in raising such a large amount of money to help improve the environment and services for the 16-24 year olds at Derriford Hospital. Thank you very much!” The Trust Fund has been set up to provide age appropriate facilities and support for patients aged 16-24 and support the staff caring for them. This will primarily and firstly be used for the TYAC space but the fund will cover other things in the future such as support groups.

It’s show time in Plympton and Cornwood Plympton Gardeners’ Association held a highly successful summer show at Harewood House in August. The President of the Association, Dr Keith Clapton presented this year’s cups and trophies to the successful winners and Andrew Hill of the Plympton Podcast caught up with him at the event to talk gardening.

“I try to get at least three hours in the garden most days when I’m not being ordered around by my wife! I recommend retirement to anyone. Especially those in the national health service!’ Dr Clapton has been a regular organiser at the Plympton Show for many years, and has also been exhibiting for many years.

Keith said: “This has been an excellent show – one of the best yet. We’re very lucky, we’ve had some excellent people like Arthur Hex who comes year after year to Plympton and Cliff Chapel who never disappoint with their exhibitions of exquisite dahlias.

His success with flowers and vegetables continues with his prized dahlias and perfect pears. The avid gardener however encourages anyone to get their green fingers on the go, stating ‘anything you can eat is well worth growing!’

“These are first rate growers and they raise the standards of the flowers and vegetables. Another outstanding vegetable man, Mr Pook, comes every year and that’s what makes the Plympton show so very good!”

Dr Clapton said: “You’ll always be assured of a warm welcome to not only the Plympton Summer and Spring Shows, but also to the meetings of the Plympton Gardeners’ Association.

Dr Clapton retired from the NHS 14 years ago, but admits he can’t keep himself out of the garden.

“We have meetings every first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Harewood House in Plympton. It’s always an interesting evening and we hope it will stimulate your appetite for hard work, fresh air and a most enjoyable hobby!”

“Now I’m retired, I’ve much more spare time, which is surely the joy of the whole thing, to be able to potter around and take one’s time.

Plympton Stannator Sally enjoys successful debut as an exhibitor Meeting up with the Plympton Stannator, Sally Luscombe at the Plympton Show, Andrew Hill of the Plympton Podcast grabbed the chance to have a chat with the first time exhibitor! Sally said: “I was persuaded to enter this year, so I decided to creatively copy my Stannator’s oath for the foliage exhibit. That’s it, it was just for fun, and what happens? They give me first prize! I did enter a few other classes, and didn’t take much notice for a few hours, came back and beside it is a little certificate saying that I’ve won the Joan Stopperton Trophy. My face has entered a new shade of red now!’ “With the Joan Stopperton award, who was previously a Lord Mayor of Plymouth, being given to the current Stannator of Plympton, it felt like a little bit of Plympton history was in the making!

Plympton! There’s cross-stitch here, with stitches that are so intricate and small, they could almost fit through the eye of a needle!” Sally has held the post of Stannator since earlier this year and already been involved with many events and fundraisers. She has supported the Poppy Appeal, having been a case worker for the Royal British Legion, Sally has lived in the area for more than 30 years, and is constantly finding herself surprised at the variety of things that happen in the area. “I was really blown away at the Plympton Fuchsia Show, I could barely believe that people had actually grown such perfect plants,” she said. She added that if she looked at her own garden all she could see was the damage that pests have caused. “I’ve got pigeons that eat my plants and hidden earwigs and woodlice!,” said Sally.

Stannator Sally Luscombe “I’ve always known that a lot’s been “The show this year has been marvellous. going on because I’ve visited and been The variety of produce on offer, you could part of many different events and activities, but there’s easily survive for a week! BEARONIMO! RAISES FUNDS FOR CHARITY It was ‘Ready, Teddy, Go!’ on Plymouth Hoe as precious teddy bears were launched from the scary heights of a fireman’s ladder. Lucky for the teddies – they had parachutes. Organised by Plympton Rotary Club the annual event ‘Bearonimo!’ awards a prize to the owner of a teddy that lands closest to a target. This year the proud winner was Sam Remmer, whose cuddly monkey ‘Brian Ververt’ landed just six inches from the bullseye.

parachuting event on Plymouth Hoe. Members teamed up with the charity Scoot-a-Long which helps disabled people get out and about in the countryside. The event formed part of Roborough Rotary Club’s ‘Disabled Activity Day’ on The Hoe. This year Action for Children helped with organising the event. The Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service kindly provided the aerial platform. Over £200 was raised for charity. Proceeds will be going to Action for Children; Rotary’s worldwide project End Polio Now, The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund as well as donations towards the Disabled Activity Day and the Fire Service Benevolent Fund.

Event organisers were delighted that the weather was on their side, with favourable winds giving perfect conditions for the teddy bears’ descent. Last year they were worried that the bears might end up in Plymouth Sound! Even the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Cllr Mike Fox, bravely ascended the aerial platform to launch one of the teddies. Bearonimo 2014 was Plympton Rotary Club’s second teddy bear 12

Plympton Rotary Club President Darren Hands said “This was such a great day for us. Rotary is all about working with the community. Not only did we have lots of children and teddies take part, but we also raised money for local charities too.”

Fun for all at Cornwood Cornwood’s annual Horticultural and Agricultural Show held at the Blachford Estate proved to be another big success. With a dog show, sheep show, pets, poultry, trade stands and horticultural displays including art and photography, there was something for everyone at a traditional celebration of the small village. Andrew Hill, of the Plympton Podcast was in attendance and caught up with President Mary Abbot. Mary said: “Today has gone extremely well, and the committee is ecstatic with the number of people who have come to the show. There’s so much enthusiasm and a great variety of exhibits that they’ve participated in. It’s always lovely to see so many people care about this small village and who come out to celebrate it. “It’s been a wonderful show, I particularly like the ducks, chickens and dogs. With vintage cars, the hounds and children sports, it’s got universal appeal. It takes a lot of work to bring this show to fruition, and we’re so lucky to have the committee that we do, they’re very hard working people. “I’ve been involved with the event for the last 33 years and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. People from as far afield as Taunton, Honiton and beyond have been taking part in the competitions so it’s an excellent event. It’s not a very big show, due to the size of the village, so it’s great to see so many involved.” The Cornwood Show also featured a horse show alongside a gymkhana which was held at Cadleigh Farm in Lee Mill a week after the main show. Mary described the horse show as a great success. “We’ve been lucky with the weather this year, and the tradition of walking around the day before with an onion on a stick for a nice sunny day. We stopped

for a while and ended up with terrible weather so we thought we better bring it back!” she said. Among the huge variety of exhibits and displays, was the Cornwood Green Wood Furniture Project, run by Peter Lanyon. Based in his workshop at Battisborough Cross, near Holbeton, Peter also works within other community projects, and also offers woodworking courses. He said: “The community project, which is funded by the Dartmoor Sustainable Development fund, is there to encourage people in sustainable ways of working. “Our current project is using traditional green woodworking techniques to make some furniture for the Cornwood Primary School. The aim is to make a patio table for the garden at the school, and a set of five benches, one for each year group with corresponding sizes for the kids! “The wood has been donated by Gavin Dollard of the Delaware State, after an oak tree fell down in his garden during the storms last winter. It’s been transported to the Sparkwell Parish Hall and has initially been worked on at the site. After being cut down into lengths and split down into manageable parts, it’ll be transported to the primary school where the rest of the work will happen.” Peter emphasised the fact that no experience is necessary, and that children have no problem working with the tools quite safely and happily. “You can pick up a piece of wood and make something very quickly with it,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for many years and it’s astonishing really how I’ve never had a child start something, and then say it’s boring and stop. It has great universal appeal, adults and children alike love it. Anybody can achieve with green woodwork, it’s not as meticulous as other methods, however it’s much more immediate.”

Age UK ‘Fit for Life’ event taking place in October

Demolition work is started to make way for 100 new homes Demolition work has started in Devonport to make way for a new housing development.

has successfully sought to re-establish confidence and pride in the area by placing the community at the centre of the change to plan for the future.”

Age UK Plymouth are holding a ‘Fit For Life’ event in October at Elspeth Sitters House Centre, Hoegate St on the Barbican, as part of Plymouth City Council’s ‘Welcoming City’ programme of events.

Councillors and representatives from Linden Homes and DCH came together for a photo at the demolition event which marks the start of work on ‘Emerge’, a new housing development being created by Linden Homes and DCH.

The work forms part of Plymouth City Council’s Plan for Homes, which includes plans for 1,000 new homes every year in Plymouth over the next five years.

The aim of the day is to offer people the opportunity to sample different activities and to access information to improve their health and well being. There will be advisors from our Information and AdVice department offering support and guidance on such things as health and well-being, energy advice, winter warmth, money matters and benefit entitlements.

The redevelopment marks the last significant phase of Linden Homes and DCH’s work in the Devonport Development Framework following on from Evolve, which when complete this year, will have delivered 219 new homes overall, including 90 affordable homes.

There will be entertainment, free refreshments and a rolling programme of events and activities throughout the day which will include such things as Tai Chi, exercise, pamper sessions and holistic therapies plus IT tuition and a healthy cooking demonstration.

Emerge will redevelop the Granby Green and Granby Street area in Devonport and will include the demolition of post war buildings and the creation of new homes within a refreshed street scene.

People between the ages of 40 and 74 will also be offered the chance to have a free NHS health check which will assess the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes. These health checks take about 30 minutes and must be booked in advance by telephoning Age UK Plymouth on 256020, all appointments will be allocated on a first come first served basis and people who have already received a diagnosis of blood pressure, kidney problems or diabetes will not be eligible for the check.

The scheme, together with other important initiatives in the area, will play an important role in establishing a new balanced and sustainable community within Devonport. Local people and representatives from Linden Homes, DCH, Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Community Homes and LHC, masterplanners and architects for the scheme were present to watch the start of the demolition taking place. These partners have been working together on the regeneration of

The event takes place on Tuesday October 7 between 10am and 3pm at Age UK Plymouth`s Elspeth Sitters House on the Barbican. Everyone welcome.

Devonport ward Councillor Bill Stevens, who is also chair of Plymouth City Council’s Planning Committee, said: “We are delighted that work is able to start on redeveloping this brownfield site and getting rid of outdated buildings providing modern, fit-for purpose homes for people in Plymouth.” Pictured at the start of the demolition work (top) Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Pauline Murphy, (bottom) Andy Joss, DCH Board Member; Angela Dupont, Group Chair of DCH; Tony Franklin, Business Development Commercial Director for DCH; Councillor Brian Vincent, Deputy Lord Mayor’s Consort; Councillor Kate Taylor; Councillor Mark Coker; Councillor Bill Stevens; Clint Jones from DCLT and Brian Deacon, Sales and Marketing Director of Linden Homes.

Devonport since 2006 and have already created award winning developments, including Evolve in the area. Nigel Palmer, managing director for Linden Homes, said: “It is a landmark day in terms of regeneration in Devonport. Emerge will breathe new life into the Granby Street area; providing 101 quality new one, two, three and four bedroom homes for the Devonport community, 36% of which will be affordable housing.

“We have received a lot of positive feedback; so many people are delighted the derelict buildings are going for good – the transformation is going to be fantastic.” Tony Franklin, business development commercial director from DCH, said: “The new development will introduce a more balanced mix of accommodation to meet a wider range of housing needs. “The Devonport regeneration project

Details of the proposed new development for Granby Green were on display at the demolition event as well as an archive collection of photos demonstrating how the Devonport area has changed over the years. All of the people previously living at Granby Green have now been moved out of the buildings and rehoused in suitable accommodation in preparation for the demolition program. All the new rented homes will be advertised through Devon Home Choice and let in accordance with the Devonport Local Letting plan. Education Training A world-class education for your child

Stoke Damerel Community College

It is common for children to start the new school term with fresh notebooks and a crisp new uniform, but it is also important to ensure they have a solid foundation in the core subjects of maths and English and the learning skills required for a successful academic year.

At our school students and teachers are united in the drive for academic excellence, the focus is on the development of the whole child growing confident, independent young women and men and forging strong partnerships between home and school.

A warm welcome is extended to all Year 6 pupils and their parents

OPEN EVENING • Doors open at 6pm.

To maximise the new term ahead, students will need to utilise key study skills, such as concentration, perseverance, pace and rhythm, and develop a productive and consistent study habit.

• Welcome presentation given by the Principal and students at 6.30pm in the Hall

• Free car parking in the City Business Park

Children can require additional support to get back into the swing of daily study, and many parents look to supplementary education to get their child off to a flying start and ensure they maximise their potential throughout the year.

Wednesday 10th September at 6.30pm www.sdcc.net

At your local Plymouth, Crownhill Study Centre, Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes which are tailored to all ages and abilities. Established for over 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work. The centre welcomes all children, whether they require further support to succeed academically or are seeking an additional challenge so they can fulfil their potential. A Kumon student is progressed based on their current ability and not their age, though we believe that every child has unlimited potential and can ultimately tackle advanced work through well-paced and individualised instruction. The sooner children begin the Kumon programme, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be

ready to help you achieve your goal. At Kumon, learning is always for the long run: the individualised programmes enable students to progress to an advanced level, at their own pace, ensuring they maximise their ability and begin to realise their unlimited potential. Through the maths and English programmes, Kumon will nurture your child’s independent study skills, so they can apply this approach to all subjects and outside of school too. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Your child will therefore be equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. Your child will initially start at a comfortable level, with a focus on building a strong foundation in the way they study; they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm, before confidently tackling topics they will not have previously studied. Through daily study of the Kumon programmes, your child will develop

independent learning skills and increased self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges by themselves. Kumon aims for our maths and English students to reach an international approximation of their school grade (the Kumon International Standard), within their first year of study. By supporting students to reach and surpass this international standard, Kumon is equipping students with the independent learning skills and ability in maths and English to successfully compete in an increasingly global community. Kumon Educational is the largest supplementary education provider in the UK and Ireland, with over 70,000 students studying at 680 study centres. The Plymouth, Crownhill Study Centre is located at St John’s Ambulance Hall, Crownhill Fort Road with classes running on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 11am. For more information, contact Instructor Jill Selwood on 01752 297336 or email plymouthcrownhill@kumoncentre. co.uk.

Students and staff at City College Plymouth have been celebrating after A Level students collected their exam results.

Overall the College has seen a 3 per cent increase in the pass rates for all the students who took AS and A2 Level exams this summer. This year 94 per cent of students passed their A2 Level exams, with 100 per cent of adults passing. This is better than the College had anticipated based on the AS Level results from last summer. Impressively, there are seven subjects that have 100 per cent pass rates, including Environmental Studies, Geography, History, Law and Further Mathematics. Principal at City College Plymouth, Phil Davies, said: “Huge congratulations must go to our A Level students for achieving such great results. This is the result of a lot of hard work over the last year to ensure that our students have got the results they needed.”

Education Training Marine Academy Plymouth: a place of learning at the heart of the community Marine Academy Plymouth is the UK’s first Marine Academy: it’s a statefunded specialist secondary school with three sponsors who are the Plymouth University, Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council. It’s now an all-through school incorporating a nursery, primary school, secondary school and Sixth Form. Marine Academy Plymouth’s principal, Nick Ward explains about the Academy: “MAP’s ethos is based on four core values: aspiration, achievement, respect and community. “Our commitment is to offer a broad and exciting curriculum with an emphasis on education outside the classroom, enabling each individual to become an effective learner with high aspirations and who can go on to achieve their ambitions. “Our students are offered an exciting range of subjects, and benefit from additional courses and activities before and after school, at weekends and during the holidays. “MAP offers an inclusive learning culture that

values and respects all people equally, where diversity is seen as a rich source of learning and all demonstrate tolerance and mutual respect”. The Academy is more than a school: it’s the hub on the hill – a valuable and integral part of the community. MAP has a flourishing community programme including the highly successful Sports offer, adult learning, community theatre and a number of further partnerships offering activities on site to students, their families and members of the public. £14m has been injected into the Academy’s buildings and facilities, which are now simply breathtaking. The buildings were created on the absolute belief that our children matter and deserve a wonderful environment in which to learn, grow and develop.

Education Training Enterprise support from the Outset Anyone considering starting a business in Plymouth is being urged to benefit from a package of fully-funded enterprise support before it ends in March 2015.

from disadvantaged backgrounds, Outset’s successes include clients who have started businesses after successful careers in other fields.

Outset Plymouth forms part of Plymouth City Council’s Urban Enterprise programme and, since launching in 2010, has helped over 2,400 local people to explore enterprise.

Ex-Royal Marine David McLean approached Outset after identifying hypnotherapy as his new vocation. Despite 14 years working in some of the world’s most volatile regions, running a business presented an entirely different challenge.

Outset’s clients have started over 225 new businesses in Plymouth, creating over 275 full-time-equivalent jobs. Meanwhile, Outset Finance, which is also based in Plymouth, has helped clients draw down £1.3m in funding, often from nontraditional lending sources.

David said, “Qualifying as a hypnotherapist was just the start; Outset showed me that I could make a good living and helped me plan the best way forward. “The enterprise workshops were excellent, giving me practical advice on how to market effectively to my target audience.”

Although mainly focused on helping people

Outset’s support doesn’t end there.

Businesses less than a year old can apply for a start-up loan through Outset Finance, while local businesses less than three years old can join Outset’s new growth workshop, aimed at helping them survive – and thrive. Alison Pine, Team Leader at Outset Plymouth, said, “Self-employment is just the start – we’re committed to helping young businesses become sustainable for the long-term, which is why our growth workshop focuses on areas such as goal setting, financial management and robust marketing strategies. “At Outset, we’re proud of our contribution to Plymouth’s SME economy and we remain committed to helping new clients achieve their dreams of starting a business.”

The Plymouth Shopper

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them” said Walt Disney, who as a young man clung to his cartoon Mickey whilst traipsing around Holywood trying to get backing and belief from the establishment. We, at the Plymouth Shopper, believe that the well being and good fortune of the city is tied up in the lives of ordinary people, and we have particular affection for those hard working entrepreneurs that risk setting up on their own to build a business on their dreams. Steve Short is a great example of this pioneering spirit. Having just celebrated his 30th birthday, he has jumped into the deep end more than once by setting up not one, but two new businesses in the city. Steve, like many youngsters in the city began in the Dockyard as an Apprentice, studying in marine engineering. However, the uncertainties that are faced by so many young people, made planning very difficult for the young Steve. “On contracted work, we were often told on a Thursday that we would not be needed the following Monday,” Steve explained, resulting in him feeling that maybe being more in control of his work load was the way to go. It was whilst renovating his own house that Steve first considered re-training to further his ambitions. The gas safety engineer he contracted to help him fit a new central heating system explained that there was plenty of work for his type of trade, and Steve considered that his Dockyard background was a good foundation for the expertise needed for such a job. So after 2 ½ years of further training, Steve, fully qualified, started Short Flow Plumbing. Steve has worked incredibly hard building his fledging business, in

Steve Short what has become a competitive market. He has grasped many issues that new businesses need to deal with – the need to get known, to provide an excellent service so others will recommend your work, to manage cashflow – particularily those scary times when outgoings are still needing to go out, but incomings are not coming in as quickly as you would like. In the last six years, he has met and built good relationships with tradesmen who share his belief in the need for quality workmanship; out of these relationships with chippies, and specialist tilers, he has formed Dream Bathrooms Ltd (visit www.dreambathroomsltd. co.uk to browse his website.) Steve explained that after meeting so many local people who require work done – from landlords to homeowners to those looking to sell – he deeply understands the need for a joined up service that can provide a complete

bathroom renovation at a price to suit the occasion. Dream Bathrooms listen very carefully to the needs of the customer before the design and planning stage, so are able to maximise customer requirements. One recent happy customer wished to sell up after living in her property since 1995. Steve's new bathroom helped her add an extra £20,000 to the value of her home, without her having to spend anything like that much to get there. Dream Bathrooms customers will benefit from the enthusiasm of a young man, determined to do a great job, with over 10 years experience and ability to source supplies at competitive trade prices, but without having to cover the larger overheads of a bigger business. We at the Plymouth Shopper, wish Steve and his colleagues all the very best in developing his dream to enable homeowners to develop theirs.

EXTENDED!!!

South Korean group here to pray for Plymouth On September 11, twenty South Korean Christians will arrive in Plymouth to pray night and day for the spiritual prosperity of our city. They are part of a contingency of a thousand South Koreans travelling at their own expense, from their land to ours, to pray day and night. Over 40 groups will travel to various cities and towns across the country to eat, sleep and pray in church halls. They are not coming for a holiday. So why would these Christians spend such an enormous amount of their own money to travel half way round the world to simply intercede in prayer for us in the UK? Their press release says this: “We thank God for the many British Christians who dedicated their lives to mission in Korea. We are greatly indebted to them because of their fearless courage and because of the precious blood that they shed in our land in order to share the Gospel with our ancestors. “We therefore regard the UK church as our mother church, which gives us a deep sense of thankfulness and responsibility to pray and support UK Christians. We are greatly concerned about the present state of spiritual

decline in the UK and we long to see a rekindling of the passion for Christ and the Gospel, as well as a new generation of UK Christians being discipled and flourishing in relationship with God.” The South Korean Church has a global reputation concerning prayer and church services of half a million Christians who meet every Sunday and praying around the clock in rotas for their nation and the world. All this is Inspired by the fact that many of their family members are severely persecuted in North Korea. The background story to this is that the Korean Church was birthed in the early 1600s and the growth of the Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions in the last two hundred years was ‘seeded through the death of the Christian martyrs of all traditions’. The recent visit of Pope Francis a few weeks back attracted an audience of over a million Roman Catholics. The Japanese had endeavoured to annex the Korean peninsula to Japan in 1910 and with the start of a spiritual revival in 1907 there was a sense of a church destined, like the Chinese Church, to face difficult times

of persecution. The invasion of Korea by the Japanese during World War 2 persecuted the Christian communities almost into extinction. However the well documented spiritual revival had taken place in 1907 when

a group of Korean Christians and Western missionaries met in Pyongyang (now the capital of North Korea) for a Bible study in a church on the outskirts of the city. Halfway through, God began to move. “They knew that the only way to survive was to depend on God,” Rev. Ji Il Bang of North Korean Church said. One by one, the men confessed their sins to each other-- sins of racial prejudice, hate, anger, and jealousy.

Bang said: “They knew that nothing was impossible with God, and so they called on Him for forgiveness.” God answered and revival broke out. In the ensuing months, thousands repented publicly, including elders of churches and foreign missionaries serving in Korea. “And all of that, they say, came from the work of the Spirit that finally broke out as at Pentecost,” Prof. Samuel H. Moffett, son of a missionary to Korea, said. Thus began the Great Pyongyang Revival of 1907. “In 1907, Pyongyang became known as the ‘Jerusalem of the East,’” Bang said. Churches sprouted up everywhere, and they grew fast. The prayers of repentance swept across the Korean Peninsula. People walked hundreds of miles to attend revival meetings. “In other words, the spiritual change was a repentance movement. Believers confessed their sins and were born again,” Pastor Han Hum Oak, from Korean National Association of Christian Pastors, said. “They even apologised to non-believers who they were at odds with.” The revival lasted some 40 years touching all levels of society including those in political power. It was then that

the Korean church suffered greatly under the dominance of the Japanese. As we currently see through our media outlets the persecution of Christian Communities worldwide now make the Christian faith the most persecuted community on the planet. I recently had the privilege of meeting and interviewing Pastor Namjin Kim who is the UK coordinator for this event and you can listen to the interview on Cross Rhythms on August 30th (5pm) and at 10am on September 1, 4, 9 and 12. A prayer meeting is open to all at Catherine Street Baptist Church on Friday Sept 12 between 6 pm and midnight. Also the South Koreans will be based at Ford Baptist Church between September 11 to 14. All the teams will then meet up again at the Emmanuel Church in Marchion Street in London the following week to pray for the nation as a whole. Christian communities all over the world are praying night and day for the following spiritual truth. The return of Jesus Christ, in person, to Jerusalem as a doctrine of the Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant denominations. Matthew 26 verse 64 states in His words. “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Age UK Plymouth have a target of 2500 little hats this year and the charity would be grateful for donations of wool to support the campaign. Wool can be dropped into any Age UK Plymouth centre and patterns and designs are available to download from their website www.ageukplymouth. org.uk. Age UK Plymouth’s William Venton Centre in Plymstock is holding a ‘Big Knit’ event on Monday September 8 from 9.30am to 12.30pm and everyone is welcome. Age UK Plymouth is an independent local charity, which has operated for over 70 years in the city. The charity provides a variety of services to over 1000 people over the age of 50 every week, including those who may be vulnerable or socially isolated. The charity exists to care for and work with older people to improve their quality of life through the promotion of choice, opportunity and independence, also providing services for carers of people over 50.

Smeaton Homes unveils new look Smeaton Homes is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Plymouth sales and lettings arena. The company has been working hard on its image over the past year, redecorating its head office on Mutley Plain and organising a complete rebrand of their logo, website and marketing materials.

Run by Dan Robinson, the company is committed to supporting companies within Plymouth. In fact, the entire rebrand process has been facilitated by companies within the local area. Dan loves to network and his support of local business has had a lot to do with Smeaton Homes’ prosperity. He sponsors a local football team and gets involved with plenty of community events on a regular basis. Dan’s commitment to his values is unwavering: “I’m

passionate about ensuring that people get the best service and that they are paying for quality. I am also passionate about keeping local business going and would rather pay a little more to deal with a local supplier than to buy nationally.” The company places huge importance on customer care. Dan knows how important this is, especially in the sales and lettings industry: “I want people to see Smeaton Homes as the local agency that they know they can trust.” As a result of Dan’s vision, each member of the Smeaton Homes team is approachable, knowledgeable and caring, something that the company’s growing customer base truly appreciates. Their books now boast 110 fully managed

rental properties, an emerging block management arm and in recent months, they have expanded into sales. The first week began with one sales property and by the Friday, five properties were listed with Smeaton Homes. The sales arm of the business continues to thrive. To celebrate their new look, Smeaton Homes is holding a launch event on Saturday September 6. The whole event has been organised and catered for by local companies and Smeaton Homes would love to see new and existing landlords, tenants and househunters on the big day.

New pothole repair machine takes to the road in Plymouth which is fed to the arm via the on-board hopper.

A new machine that can repair potholes in minutes has taken to the road in Plymouth.

The Roadmaster patcher is the latest weapon in Plymouth’s anti-pothole armoury and one of only 14 currently in the UK.

Dubbed ‘the world’s most advanced potholing machine’, the Roadmaster is being hired for a month-long trial at a cost of around £58,000 (including materials), paid for by Plymouth City Council from its recent Department for Transport pothole grant.

It repairs individual potholes much more quickly and effectively than traditional methods, which involve cutting

Councillor Evans (centre), watching the Roadmaster in action. He is pictured with Victoria Hutchins from Amey and Matt Walker from Archway Products, who manufacture the Roadmaster

out a square hole around the defect with an angle grinder, filling the hole in with tarmac and gravel and rolling the patch to compress the filling.

The Roadmaster, which is nicknamed ‘the Dalek’ because of the robotic arm in front, automatically fills potholes with an air-blown bitumen compound,

Council Leader Tudor Evans went to see the Roadmaster in action. He said: “This is a pretty impressive bit of kit, which is enabling crews to fix more potholes in a much shorter space of time – meaning roads are made safe quicker and with less disruption to motorists. Introducing technology like this is just one of the ways we’re tackling the problem of potholes on Plymouth’s roads – despite widespread Government cuts.”

Victoria Hutchins, Watchman-inChief for the Council’s highways contractor Amey, said: “Other Amey contracts across the UK have had great success with the Roadmaster. We only started

using it on Tuesday but so far we are extremely impressed; it is delivering the equivalent of five gangs’ work.

“Although we will still have a minimum of 10 gangs per day repairing potholes, we will be using this machine over the next four weeks to compliment the range of treatments we are using to reduce the number of potholes, therefore improving safety and the condition of our roads.”

The Roadmaster is carrying out individual pothole repairs alongside the Council’s 12-week resurfacing and reconstruction programme, which got under way in June to repair some of the most severely damaged roads in Plymouth.

Hundreds of people attended the open day in Market Road. With stalls selling bric-abrac, cakes, books and raffles, the event also featured live music and performances from the Off Key Singing Club, local student Jessica Ball and the Starlight School of Dance.

“We were given a great selection of raffle prizes from local and Plymouth businesses. Iceland have the Poppy Appeal as their charity this year and kindly donated all the bread rolls for the BBQ, which we were so grateful for. Local taxi company Plymcabs gave taxi vouchers and Passion in Market Road gave several hair and beauty vouchers,” she added.

Pat said: “We raised £1,250 on the day with the promise of more to come. It was a fabulous day with lots of people through the door.

Outside, local chef Tony Ashely, from A Local Secret cooked mouth-watering burgers and the cake stall run by Mo Diffy alone raised £160. Fine cuisine and great entertainment weren’t the only items on the menu at the Open Day however. ‘G’ and ‘O’ gauge model railway exhibitions were on display as well as Plympton Owls having a number of their birds on display. Geoffrey the Giraffe, from Toys R Us was also in attendance, giving something for the children to look forward to. “We had so much fun, so a big thank you to everyone who helped on the day,” said Julie.

They came bear-ing gifts! Representatives from local charity, Becca’s Bear, dropped in to Derriford Hospital recently armed with another generous donation of bears for the children. Marking the fourth anniversary of the charity, Louise Howie and Janet Pengelly from Becca’s Bear, along with Megan Lavis from Build-A-Bear, visited level 12 at Derriford Hospital to deliver teddy bears for donation to children on the wards. The Build-A-Bear mascot, Bearemy, was also on hand to help with distributing bears and hugs. Sam Cartwright, play specialist, said: “A huge thank you to Becca’s Bear for another incredible donation and to Build-A-Bear for coming up to visit us. The children absolutely adore the teddy bears we are able to give them and were also delighted to see Bearemy.”

Local charity Jeremiah’s Journey are running Plymouth’s first ever Photomarathon to raise funds for children and their families who have experienced or are anticipating the death of someone special.

Plymouth has never hosted a Photomarathon…until now. Jeremiah’s Journey will be holding its first one on Saturday September 27 at the Plymouth College of Art.

After the event, the entries will be judged by experts from across the city including: Chris Smith and Tobie Loades - joint course leaders for BTEC Extended Diploma Photography at Plymouth College of Art, John Allen – press photographer, Russell Soper from Soperfect Images and Amber Pearl from Liberty Pearl Photography.

A photomarathon is a photography competition in which ‘participants must take a series of photographs on predetermined subjects in a set period of time, typically 12 to 24 hours’. The competitions take place all over the world. The concept is believed to have started in Copenhagen, Denmark, where a competition has been taking place annually

Registration will take place from 9am. Jeremiah and Ana from Frozen (Upon A Wish) will be there to greet participants. The first three topics (that are kept secret until the day) will be handed out at 10.30am. Participants then have three hours to explore the City Centre and beyond to take a picture for each of the given topics. After lunch at 1.30 participants will return to the college for their last three topics. At

There will be first, second and third prizes for each category (Under 14yrs, 14-16yrs, 17+) which have been donated by Tesco, Calumet Photographic, Truprint and PCA Young Arts Club. A prize giving will take place at the Plymouth College of Art followed by an exhibition of all the entries.

SAVING PLYMOUTH’S MR (ANDY) BANKS!

The bears are distributed to children in hospital to bring support and hugs to patients. Each bear wears its own Becca’s Bear t-shirt and is provided by the Build-a-Bear workshop, in Drake Circus. Becca’s Bear was set up in 2010 by Plymouth man, Matt Connell, in memory of his wife Rebecca. During her life, Rebecca spent a lot of time at Derriford Hospital as a patient, initially on the children’s wards and later as a patient on other wards and departments.

World-class diving coach Andy Banks will be staying in Plymouth, thanks to a funding package put together by the City Council in partnership with University of St Mark and St John, Plymouth College and Everyone Active. Andy, who is the only British diving coach to have coached an Olympic medal-winning diver at London 2012, announced earlier this summer that he was considering a funding offer from Canadian Diving. This would have meant leaving Plymouth in February 2015, when his current contract with British Diving comes to an end. The shock news prompted hundreds to sign

In recognition of his unique talents and significant contribution to the sport – and to Plymouth – the Council stepped in to coordinate a funding package in partnership with the University of St Mark and St John, Plymouth College and Everyone Active (who operate the Plymouth Life Centre on behalf of the Council) to retain Andy’s services in the city.

Under the partnership agreement Andy will continue to lead high performance coaching at the Plymouth Life Centre until March 2017. He will also provide master classes for students on sports coaching and sport and exercise science programmes at Marjon’s, where he will help to provide support for athletes and inform research. His role will also include identifying talent and supporting other diving coaches, as well as continuing to act as an ambassador for Plymouth by promoting sport and the city on the international stage.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We are absolutely delighted that Andy has decided to stay in the city. This is excellent news for our current elite divers and our crop of elite

Plymstock Festival has the Broadway buzzing with folk Plymstock Broadway and the surrounding area was buzzing with activity on the last Saturday in August as Plymstock Festival combined with a special producer’s arts, crafts, food and drink fair. Now in its eighth year the Plymstock Festival has grown bigger and bigger and Saturday saw hundreds of families join together in the summer sunshine for an array of activities, music and dancing.

PRODUCER FAIR PROVES POPULAR

With zumba, planes, trains and boat displays, a dog show and Samba Kernow Drummers - the day was full of energy and saw smiles all round. The producer market in the Broadway was organised by Annette Laurie and proved extremely popular with young and old alike. There were lots of market stalls, children’s entertainment, bouncy castle and inflatables. The purpose of the Plymstock Festival is to encourage local groups and organisations to perform, put on displays and let everyone know what they provide in the community.

Story and pictures by Naomi Girdler

Fun at Saltram Games

The popular event is organised by the Plymstock Community Forum, which was established more than 10 years ago to provide a programme of public meetings – as well as the annual festival, which takes place in Downhorne Park and the Plymstock Community Centre, behind The Broadway. The festival provided an opportunity to draw the whole Plymstock community together and involves the participation of many local charities, voluntary groups and other organisations. It provides a valuable showcase for groups to let the public know about their activities. The Plymstock Community Forum is an umbrella organisation representing the Plymstock community and local voluntary groups. It was originally established to give local residents the opportunity to meet with local councillors and the police. It now provides a regular programme of public meetings which encourages debates on topics such as planning, policing issues, safety, youth issues and support for the elderly. The Forum encourages participation by all members of the community to look at ways of improving the lives of residents. During the year meetings are held on the first Monday of every other month at Plymstock Library starting at 7.30pm. The meeting in August featured a presentation by the Plymstock Camera Club on their work.

Dozens of families took part in a sporty summer Sunday at Saltram in August. Adults and children alike took part in a whole range of sports in the Saltram Games event, which was held in the park and garden on Sunday August 24. It was a chance for everyone to try new sports, improve their skills and have fun competing with family and friends. Sports available included golf, football, rugby, volleyball, tennis, bowls and badminton. There were games organised by local clubs, as well as canoeing, orienteering and cycling. Youngsters also had the chance to enjoy medal making, wild art activities and face painting.

The October event will include the history of Langdon Court. Forum chair Elaine O’Flaherty said: “Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings. They tend to be well supported and we regularly see 60 or more people at the events. • The next producer market in Plymstock Broadway will be on September 20 between 10am and 4pm. Legally Speaking By Greg Yates of Howard & Over Solicitors

A global media company that has made its home in Plymouth has joined the 1000 Club. GOD TV, an evangelical channel which broadcasts across the globe is transforming the former Millennium building in Union Street into a new base has now signed up to the scheme which aims to give young people a foot in the door.

Domestic abuse:

important changes Although, as I write this article it is the summer break for politicians it does not stop them outlining policies and suggested changes to the law. The current Home Secretary has proposed creating a new crime relating to domestic abuse. I do not know if anything will come of it before the next election but it shows that it is still an issue. ‘Domestic abuse’ does not just include physical violence. It can include actions such as stopping your partner using a telephone or isolating them from their families. I have been involved in very complicated cases where, although the violence was minimal, the control was such that the person was effectively a slave in their own home. People usually think of women being the victims in these situations and that is indeed the majority of the cases that I have dealt with. However, I have been involved in cases where the domestic abuse was directed at men. There is a debate about whether further legislation is necessary, particularly where it involves the criminal legal system being involved. There are a number of remedies already available. You can obtain a non-molestation injunction which means that the perpetrator cannot get in touch with you. These can be obtained urgently. I think my record is obtaining an order three hours after the client came into the office. These first orders are usually done without notice to ensure that the victim gets maximum protection. Breach of these orders is a criminal offence. You can also seek an occupation order requiring somebody to leave a property. In relation to these matters legal aid is still available. Furthermore, even if somebody is not financially eligible for legal aid they are helped in that, for this kind of application, there are no court fees. Often these applications are linked with child matters. For example it may be appropriate to limit the contact children have with an abusive parent. At our offices the highest priority is given to these applications. There is no need for an appointment. We appreciate that it is sometimes very difficult to break away from an abusive partner. We will do all that we can to assist. We also have contacts with a number of support services in the area. These provide valuable support for people rebuilding their lives following the ending of such a relationship. Often the injunction application is the start of my work with the client. I have enormous job satisfaction seeing the improvements in people’s attitudes, clothing and confidence as they set out on a new life, away from an abusive past. If you are in an abusive relationship, please do not suffer in silence. Get in touch.

GOD TV signs up for the 1000 Club

The Plymouth Shopper

As well as creating up to 100 jobs and helping spread the name of Plymouth as Britain’s Ocean City across the globe, it is also planning to offer apprenticeships with the help of the 1000 Club. Head of Ministry Development, Dean Seddon said: “GOD TV is pleased to be a part of The 1000 Club and we are committed to working with other international organisations and local businesses in Plymouth to empower the city’s young people. “With a widespread reach to 18 to 25-year olds, we aim to provide programming that is relevant to this generation including the UK’s top youth rallies and latest

Contemporary Christian Music releases.

“We have been able to accommodate several interns in the past who have been trained in broadcast media and related skills. “We now hope to make new positions available to young people in Plymouth when our Revival Prayer Centre officially opens to the public in 2015.” Councillor Leader Tudor Evans said: “We are delighted that GOD TV has endorsed the 1000 Club. Plymouth’s creative industries sector is rapidly expanding and has an estimated turnover of more than £250 million a year. “Investment and confidence from global companies like GOD TV is really important – but equally important is their commitment to our young people, to make sure they get a chance to try work in an exciting and inspiring environment.” GOD TV recently presented a documentary on location in Plymouth, England and Plymouth, Massachusetts, looking at the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers and forward to fostering stronger links between the UK and USA.

Becton, Dickinson (BD), which employs more than 550 people in the city, plans to produce a new and innovative blood collection tube thanks to the grant from the latest round of the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

Francis Clark’s grants team is now seeing a steady stream of interest from businesses thinking of applying for Round 6 of the RGF, which has £200 million available to private sector bidders seeking £1 million or more for projects that will generate significant private sector investment and sustainable jobs. Businesses will be able to submit their bids until the end of September.

In total, the Government is investing £210 million from the first five rounds of the RGF in the South West, supporting 39 projects and programmes across the region, which will help to create and safeguard thousands of jobs and stimulate £700 million of private sector investment.

“It has been said, with heavy irony, that justice in the UK is open to all, like the Ritz Hotel.” Lord Bingham said this in his 2010 book ‘Rule of Law’. Since then there have been a number of legislative changes that have meant that access to justice is becoming an even more exclusive affair. These changes include: • Increases in the length of time a person must be employed for before many of their employment rights become enforceable • Introduction of fees for employment tribunals • Changes to legal aid scope and eligibility affecting several advice areas including family and housing law • Changes to fee structures and administrative processes across Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Services (HMCTS) including e.g. bankruptcy fees. • Welfare reforms The Rule of Law and hence the right to access to justice, is a cornerstone of the British Constitution. The problem with the British Constitution however is that it is so piecemeal spread over so many different documents and conventions implemented in different periods of our history that it is often hard to spot when our constitutional rights as British subjects are being eroded. Plymouth CAB, part of the Advice Plymouth

Access to justice:

important legislative changes that affect everyone... By Alanna Cohen of Advice Plymouth Consortium, have a particular remit not just to provide people with the advice they need, but also to influence the policies and practices that affect people’s lives. We are seeing many people across the Advice Plymouth partnership for whom access to justice is becoming an increasing problem. In September, Plymouth CAB will be launching a research focussed campaign to improve access to justice in line with Bingham’s principles of the Rule of Law that the law should apply equally to all and that there must be means without prohibitive costs or unreasonable delay for citizens to resolve their legal disputes.

Our research will look at the barriers our clients face to accessing justice in the areas of debt, employment, relationships and welfare benefits and we aim to publish a report in early 2015 with recommendations for HMCTS and the Government. If you are experiencing an issue for which you need help but are unable to access legal help, visit Advice Plymouth or call 01752 520052. We will give whatever advice we can to help you with the problem but we will also listen to your difficulties with accessing justice and include your valuable evidence in our report and use this to call for change.

Sports, food and money matters all on the summer school timetable

Children in Plymouth tried out some sporting activities and tucked into free lunches as part of a pilot to open school kitchens during the summer holidays to help reduce the impact of Government cuts on hard-pressed families. For three weeks of the summer holidays two sporting sessions and lunch sittings took place every day at Drake Primary School in Keyham. A maximum of 60 children have enjoyed free activities each day including martial arts, circus skills and basketball and have also received a hot, nutritious, freshly prepared meal either after or before their activity sessions.

Advice Plymouth have also been on hand to provide information to parents and carers about everything from benefits and Tax Credits, to consumer and employment rights, housing options and money and debt advice. By the end of the pilot 900 free spaces on sporting and craft activities, plus lunches will have been offered to eight to 12 year olds in the city. The summer sports and kitchen project, known as ‘School’s Out’, is part of a package of work aimed at lessening the impact of the Government’s welfare reform, which has resulted in a reduction to the income of many households, leaving families struggling. Grant funding of £405,000 has been earmarked for projects that aim to help tackle financial issues, fuel poverty and unemployment in the city.

MONEY MA££ERS with Tony Jopson

Six things to teach children about money... Generally, the generation born in the early 1900s knew a lot about money management. Many of them lived through a great depression and financed two world wars. Each generation since then has learned less about money than the generation before it. Our current generation appears to be very short on good money management skills, so I plan to use this column over the next few months to set out some principles, which if acted on, could reverse this trend.

Chris is a top achiever

Serco porter Chris Oliver has been named Achiever of the Year by a multi-award-winning project based at Derriford Hospital. Chris won the award after an internship with Project Search, a partnership between Derriford Hospital, Serco, City College Plymouth and Pluss. The organisations work closely together to find work experience placements for young adults with learning disabilities, to help them develop job skills, lead fuller lives and become more independent.

It was Chris’s third award – he was previously named Serco Employee of the Month and Outstanding Newcomer. Julie Hawke, Serco communication and

engagement manager, said: “Chris’s internships included making deliveries in Logistics, working as a general porter and as a porter in X-ray. When a vacancy arose in the front of house department, he applied and has become a valued member of the team. “We have had many interns from Project Search and they, including Christopher, are among the best and most reliable people we have. It’s an excellent programme and we are proud to be part of it.” Chris said he was proud of his achievements and just wanted to help people in the hospital: “I am grateful for the help that Project SEARCH gave to me, without them I would not have got the job and be an independent working man.”

Aiming it at children is deliberate as good skills gained early in life will serve well for longer – but of course adults applying these ideas for the first time will benefit too. So here are teachings 1 and 2: Debt makes everything more expensive If you buy a car for £10,000 in cash, it will cost you £10,000. If you buy the same car on a 5 year loan at 5% interest, that same car will cost you £11,323. Many people believe that they are using credit because they cannot afford the things they want or need. The reality is that credit makes those things more expensive. Then, because debt has made those people even poorer, they become even more dependent upon credit. This vicious cycle of dependency haunts many people for their entire lives. Not all debt is the same Some ways of borrowing money are better

than others; here are a few in the order of the most expensive to the least: The payday loan. These can have annualized interest rates of over 1,000% and attract aggressive collection tactics from lenders to obtain repayment. Credit cards. This is also the most common method of borrowing as credit cards make it easy to borrow money - but it is never easy to pay back borrowed money, especially with interest rates commonly around 30%. Mortgage. This is probably the cheapest borrowing but the flipside is that it is secured on a property and non-repayment can lead to people losing their homes. However, with a property market that in the long run seems to have appreciated in value this is probably as good a debt as you can have! Become debt free. “The borrower is the servant of the lender” is a frequently quoted and very evidently true proverb. Easy to aspire to but harder to achieve, this ideal is well worth pursuing. It will, however, very likely involve discipline in spending and saving habits over a long period. There is massive pressure in our society to borrow of course and indeed the government needs people to borrow so that people will consume and enable the national debt to be serviced. If you do have debt problems please don’t despair or do anything rash – take the brave step of admitting the problem to yourself and anyone close to you who needs to know.

The Plymouth Student Innovating an Industry After going out on the streets and speaking to hundreds of parents about what they actually want from kid’s footwear, it quickly became apparent that the process of putting shoes on children is mostly regarded as a chore. Squeezing, manipulating, stretching, forcing, untying, retying, disfiguring, bribing and appeasing were just some of the daily efforts made during the shoe-dressing task. The need to reduce the time and energy spent during this daily scenario was considerable. BêJaKs decided to tackle this problem head on. Owned by 21 year old Plymouth University student James Holden, BêJaKs is a range of beautiful designer toddler shoes with unique patent-pending easyfit and width adjustment technology. Each shoe is hand-crafted using high quality supple leather and includes superior arch support, resilient pull tags to aid with easy fitting and non-scratching durable outsoles. James is passionate about running businesses which add real value to people’s lives and believes BêJaKs has a bright future. Alongside the shoe designs, the company also uses a simple online ordering system for its retailers, real-time delivery tracking, allows Bitcoin payments, and constantly updates the website with the latest applications. Innovation truly is at the heart of the company and influences everything it does.

“I want to do for the Children’s Fashion Industry what the young founders of Facebook, Snapchat and Whatsapp have done for technology. Creating unique ways of solving problems and incorporating them with gorgeous style is exactly what BêJaKs is about. Tradition Meets Innovation - a combination of elegance and functionality.” – James Holden, Managing Director Shortlisted for ‘Young Business of the Year’ by the Plymouth Magazine, James is not alone in trying to make BêJaKs a superstar business. He has built an influential team of mentors around him, including the Exeter based founder of Gro – an international baby product company with 2013 revenues of £10.4m! With a growing number of retailers and increasing online sales, James is currently raising £75,000 to meet the demand and rapidly expand his business. The young entrepreneur is using an equity crowdfunding model, meaning the investment will be made up of hundreds of small investors, rather than one large one. Anybody can invest in BêJaKs from as little as £10 and all investors get 50%+ back in tax relief. The plot to blow up Smeaton’s Tower Over the years, Smeaton’s Tower on Plymouth Hoe has been the location of a bomb plot, BBC broadcasts and a mysterious death. It has also witnessed the First and Second World Wars, visiting troops and royal occasions, as well as many other important events. When the idea was first suggested to move the lighthouse from the Eddystone Reef to Plymouth Hoe, it wasn’t popular with everyone. Many felt that it would ruin the look of the area and an obelisk already stood on the proposed site. The council turned down the idea three times but finally gave into the wishes of the people and the Trinity Board headed by the Duke of Edinburgh. The Duke laid the foundation stone on the Hoe on 20th October 1882 and the lighthouse was opened to the public on Wednesday 24th September 1884. Once on the Hoe, Smeaton’s Tower was painted in the colours we see today, with a red lantern and red banded stripes. This colour scheme lasted until 1937, when it was decided a new paint scheme would be adopted to coincide with the coronation of George VI. The Western Morning News of Tuesday 13th April 1937 reported on a council meeting discussing the matter: ‘Criticism of the plan to paint Smeaton Lighthouse green and stone colour was made by Mr Harry Taylor. Mr Taylor said the present colours of the lighthouse were known to thousands throughout the world and to paint it green and stone colour would alter the entire

In 1913 an attempt was made by Suffragettes. This and other stories surrounding the famous landmark are the subject of Derek Tait’s column. Derek has had many other books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk appearance of the tower. Mrs J Pook seconded. ‘With all the alterations proposed on the Hoe, we shall hardly know the place presently,’ she said. Mr P Ross defended the proposal and said the new colours would make it look more like a lighthouse. Mr Leatherby said at the moment the lighthouse looked more like a barber’s pole.

Many strange and interesting tales, some long forgotten, are connected with the lighthouse. In 1913, Smeaton’s Tower was nearly blown up by a bomb. At the time, the story was carried in newspapers up and down the land. On Monday 21st April 1913, the Dundee Courier carried the following story under the headline ‘Bomb is Placed in Lighthouse.’ It read:
‘A suffragette bomb was placed

in Smeaton Tower on Plymouth Hoe and a serious explosion would have occurred if the fuse had not burnt out.
While passing the tower, a man named William Chubb, found in the porch a circular canister, six inches long, containing half a pound of powder. In the cover was a wick saturated with paraffin oil which had evidently been lighted but had been blown out by the wind. Painted in crude

‘The Smeaton Tower attendant on duty told a Western Morning News reporter yesterday that suddenly he heard a thud and, on looking out of his little window, he saw the huddled form of a woman lying on the south side of the lighthouse.’

In January 1936, Lieutenant-Colonel W P Drury, a well-known novelist and playwright, broadcasted from the top of the lighthouse, via the BBC, to the Empire in India.

Mr Leatherby: ‘I would, willingly, and I would take away a good many other monuments if I had my way.’

The new colour scheme was adopted and lasted into the 1960s when the tower was repainted white with the lantern part painted red. A black band was painted around the base of the lighthouse. This colour scheme lasted until the late 1970s but by 1980 (probably for the Drake 400 celebrations), the original red and white banded colour scheme, which we see today, was once more adopted.

‘The dead woman was later identified as Ivy May Simms, aged about 25, who lodged at 36 Ker Street, Devonport but whose home address is believed to be at Riley Street, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.

The story mentioned that she was a married woman with two children who had worked at the nearby cafe. The full story can be read on my blog at : http:// plymouthlocalhistory.blogspot.co.uk/

A voice: ‘Take it away, then.’

Mr Leatherby said the colours recommended would be more artistic.’

picked up, was found to be dead.

The red and white colour scheme which was adopted in the 1960s and lasted throughout the 1970s letters in black paint on the tin were the words ‘Votes for Women!’ ‘Death in Ten Minutes!’’

The Western Times reported that the canister was handed over to the police who were ‘endeavouring to trace the culprits.’
Suffragette bombs had been placed all over the country but the newspapers failed to report if anyone was ever caught for planting the bomb in Smeaton’s Tower.

Incidentally, Smeaton’s Tower became known as just Smeaton Tower (dropping the ‘s’) when it was rebuilt on the Hoe and it wasn’t until well after the Second World War that the name ‘Smeaton’s Tower’ was readopted. There are many other interesting stories connected with the lighthouse which are too long to be featured here but further tales can be read on my online blog.

A tragedy later occurred at Smeaton’s Tower and the story was carried in the Western Morning News of 3rd October 1931. It read: ‘A terrible tragedy occurred yesterday on Plymouth Hoe, resulting in the death of a young woman. ‘Owing to the mist which shrouded most of the Sound and the light rain which was falling, there were few people on the Hoe at the time and the tragedy was witnessed by only one or two people. It was about 3.30pm that a woman was seen to be falling to the ground from the platform which surrounds the top of Smeaton Tower about 70 feet from the ground. She sustained terrible injuries to the head and a broken neck and, when

St Luke’s garden gets an award-winning treatment The area outside the reception building at St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth looks stunning after local gardener Sam Ovens worked his green fingered magic and transformed the bare patches of earth in to a fantastic natural garden. 25 year old Sam, from Pelynt near Looe, recently won the Young Designer of the Year Award at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society’s Flower Show at Tatton Park with his show garden “The Sky’s the Limit”. It was his wish after the show was over to donate the whole garden to St Luke’s and a few weeks ago the hundreds of plants were delivered to the hospice at Turnchapel . Over the duration of a few days a small band of enthusiastic volunteers armed with spades, forks and plenty of energy planted out pink verbenas along with delicate blue agastache and sweet smelling oregano interspersed with beautiful grasses that give the garden wonderful texture and movement framing the building at St Luke’s perfectly.

Busy time at Good Food Market September’s Good Food Market at the Royal William Yard on Sunday September 7 between 9.30am and 4pm is going to be busier than ever. Joining the regular food and drink stalls will be a host of arts and crafts stalls, as well as animals from Pennywell Farm, the Devon and Cornwall Fireboat based in the harbour, and there will be fun activities including street entertainers and face painters. The added attractions have been funded by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership working with Urban Splash and Plymouth City Council, and look certain to make it a great day out. “This is the first time we have teamed up with Urban Splash to be able to offer a fantastic event for people visiting the Royal William Yard,” said Sarah O’Leary, Waterfront Manager. “Super Summer Sunday is going to add something extra to the already popular Farmers’ Market which is held on the first Sunday of every month. Supporting businesses in the waterfront is one of the PWP BID plan priorities and this event

will help increase the footfall into the area. The Royal William Yard is one of Plymouth’s primary visitor destinations. There is so much on offer, adding to the variety and diversity of what Plymouth has to see and do. It is a spectacular setting on the River Tamar and we are keen to raise awareness of this hidden gem”. Emily Handslip, associate director of Urban Splash said: “The Yard is now one of Plymouth’s key destinations and it has been exciting to see it brought back to life and how it continues to evolve. Next month we’re welcoming a pop-up theatre company in Melville building and there are exciting plans for 2015 too, so it’s just going to get better and better.” Visits to the award-winning Pennywell Farm roadshow will be free. Based in the gardens of Residence Two, visitors will be able to have a cuddle with one of the world famous miniature Pennywell pigs, or even with a giant bunny! Meanwhile, down at the harbour, the Devon and Cornwall Fireboat crew will base their boat so that visitors can talk to the crew and find out more about the important work they do in Plymouth.
