Argyle put city on the map - big time!

Plymouth Argyle’s exploits against Liverpool in the FA Cup have certainly put the city on the map. The huge amount of publicity following the fantastic goal-less draw at Anfield has undoubtedly turned the spotlight on Britain’s Ocean City in a very positive way.

I’m no great follower of football (being a football widow for more than 20 Saturdays every year) but I was glued to the TV when the Liverpool match was screened.

My hubby and two sons travelled up to Liverpool for the weekend and were blown away by the whole experience. A visit to the famous Cavern Club on the Saturday before the match was a great prelude for what was to follow on Sunday afternoon in front of nearly 54,000 fans - more than 8,500 of them members of the Green Army. Everyone in Liverpool was really welcoming apparently - especially the staff and stewards at Anfield. It’s good to hear that opposing fans can come together in such a spirit of friendship.

I’m writing this on the eve of the replay at Home Park so by the time the magazine is distributed we will know the outcome of what is certainly one of the biggest matches in the club’s recent history.

Whatever the result, the FA Cup run has provided a major boost to Argyle and follows the club’s recent announcement that £5 million is being invested in refurbishing the 65 year old Mayflower Stand. The money has come from Simon Hallett and his wife Jane. Simon bought into the club last year and he has now certainly put his money where his mouth is.

All credit to both Simon and Jane for that. It really feels like the club is in very safe hands at present.

Based for many years in the USA, Simon has turned his attention to Plymouth and believes Argyle must play an important role in the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020.

In the meantime here’s hoping Argyle put on another great show in the replay and secure promotion from League 2.

£1 million training academy helping young people to launch their careers

Thousands of young people in Plymouth are set to benefit over the coming years from a £1 million state-of-the-art training academy that’s just opened its doors in the city centre.

South West-based Skills Group has moved into the 7,233 square foot premises at Derry’s Cross that was formerly the home of Groundwork South West. And, after a refurbishment lasting almost a year, the first apprentices are now reaping the benefits.

The first phase of the training centre is the Hair Academy on the ground floor. The hairdressing and barbering training has been relocated from the company’s Union Street site.

Later in 2017 the training for child care, business and sport and leisure will also move to Derry’s Cross, from the current centre in Langage.

By the time this edition goes to press, all parts of the building should be up and running. The city centre presence has already made an impact, with young people walking in to ask about apprenticeships available with local employers who work with Skills Group.

The Hair Academy has 21 stations, with apprentices starting off by learning the basics at the back and working their way to the front.

To make the training experience as close as possible to a working salon, customers can walk in or book an appointment with a trainee.

Apprentice Ellie Ash, 18, has already noticed a difference. Ellie works at Coles HD salon in Estover, where two colleagues have completed their apprenticeships with Level 3 qualifications in conjunction with Skills Group: “Actually getting to do people’s hair is helping my confidence a lot,” she said. “It’s very hands-on and everyone helps each other. And the facilities are fantastic. I enjoy coming here; everyone enjoys it.”

Working with her are trainers/assessors Zoe McCreadie, Helen Woodward, Helen Morrish, Sophie Holland and Charlie Mousley.

Lisa said: “One of the things that students tell us is that they’ve taken an apprenticeship because they’re getting a vocational qualification, they’re getting paid and they’re getting three years of experience in the workplace.

Their employability is significantly enhanced and it’s that employability factor that makes an apprenticeship such an advantage for many young people.”

Even in its early days, the new training academy is having an impact. Assessor Helen Woodward said: “Employers are coming in to have a look and are very impressed. More are wanting to take on apprentices. And our learners have also responded to the environment. They’re stepping up.”

Apprentices spend one day a week at the training academy, with funding from Government grants. They spend the rest of the week at their place of work, putting their training into practise.

Three days a week induction courses are also available to train those young people who might need to learn ‘work-ready’ skills before an apprenticeship. The training centre has a learner canteen and runs a free breakfast club to ensure that all apprentices receive a healthy breakfast before their day begins.

Group’s doors each year. Of those, 200 are looking to work in hairdressing and barbering, with 130 of these being trained in Plymouth. The new academy will ensure that many more will earn the qualifications necessary for their futures and will provide city employers with a skilled workforce.

Mark Boulting, managing director of Skills Group, said: “We have invested a total of £5 million over the last three years, with our new training centre in the heart of Plymouth adding to our construction and engineering training centres in Langage, and hair academies in Newton Abbot and Exeter.

“Our presence in the centre of the city will further raise the profile of apprenticeships with young people and their parents as a realistic alternative to sixth form or higher education. It will also help to promote apprenticeships to employers who are yet to realise the benefits apprentices can bring to their business, both in terms of developing their workforce to meet their specific needs and having a positive impact on their bottom line.”

The training centre also enables Skills Group to expand its higher apprenticeship and upskilling training for employers: “A number of our employers have asked us to look into offering apprenticeship training for their existing staff, as a way of upskilling their workforce to meet the changing demands on their businesses,” said Mr Boulting. “With the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy next year and new funding methods, we anticipate an increase in demand for this type of training.”

Kerrie Drake of Karisma Nails & Beauty in Stoke

Expansion adds extra gloss for Karisma Nail & Beauty!

Kerrie Drake is celebrating a dozen years at her Karisma Nails & Beauty salon in the heart of Stoke village – by buying it and making it bigger! Kerrie is also expanding her team from four to five by appointing a new apprentice so all-in-all, 2017 is already shaping up to be a great year.

Kerrie has been renting the premises in Devonport Road since moving from the city centre salon where she worked with her colleague, Lisa, who made the move with her. But with business continuing to grow she has decided to buy the premises and extend it to offer a bigger space for clients to enjoy.

“It’s very exciting,” said Kerrie.

“Everything I’ve dreamed of and worked towards in the past 12 years is now coming true.”

Both Kerrie and Lisa have been qualified nail artists for 18 years and have worked together for 13 of those: “When I qualified as a nail technician, it was so new that I had to explain to people what I actually did,” said Kerrie. “Now it’s huge.”

Kerrie and husband Adam were due to get the keys to the property just as Plymouth Magazine was going to press: “We are planning to expand the salon so that it opens up the whole ground floor,” explained Kerrie. and there will be two pedicure stations and a spray tanning station. The nail treatments will remain at the front of the salon, with an extra, fourth nail desk.

“It’s going to take a while, perhaps even a year to 18 months, because we want to get it absolutely right,” said Kerrie. The salon will be staying open throughout the expansion, with the front being used while the rear refurbishment is taking place and then vice-versa.

Since opening with just Kerrie and Lisa, the salon has grown to four advanced qualified nail technicians and beauty therapists, with Cara and Kelly completing the team – and Kerrie is looking to take on an apprentice in 2017. Some customers have been with Karisma Nails from Day 1 – including those who moved with Kerrie and Lisa – and people travel from as far as Princetown, Torpoint and Plympton.

So what’s the secret to their success? “We’re a friendly, highly qualified team and we keep our prices affordable so that having beautiful nails is an everyday thing and not just for special occasions,” said Kerrie.

The friendly welcome and the fact that Kerrie and the team clearly enjoy what they do is also a reason why people keep coming back: “I wake up in the morning and look forward to coming to work,” said Kerrie.

“That’s all down to our customers. The friendships we build are lovely – it’s the best part of the job.

“And even after 18 years I still get excited by all the new things that are happening in the trade, the new innovations and trends.”

All the women who work at Karisma are mums with young children so, unusually for the industry, Kerrie employs all of them: “They’re not self-employed. This is important to me because it provides stability for everyone and it’s also good for our clients, too.”

ART MATTERS

Talented artist Julie’s solo exhibition at Ocean Studios Plymouth artist Julie Ellis currently has an exhibition at The Royal William Yard.

Located in the Factory Cooperage building, opposite Las Iguanas, Ocean Studios is the creative space displaying her artwork until February 17.

This solo show, Art Matters with Kerry Cole entitled Earth & Air: The Episodic Memory is open each week from Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm to 5pm and invites visitors to gain an interesting insight into Julie's work. She will be

painting live within the exhibition every Saturday.

Julie was born in Plymouth in the 70s. She went back to higher education in 2012 and received a first class honours degree in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking at Plymouth College of Art. The theme of ‘place’ and ‘a sense of belonging’ have a commanding role in her art pieces. Her work has developed predominantly into oil paintings which impart enigmatic, loose, airy and sublime aspects of the land.

I first met Julie as part of the ‘Drawn to the Valley’ Open Studios event in 2015. Since then her work and artistic prominence has literally snowballed.

She recently told me: "Back then, everything was in its very early stages. It was all just coming together – that sense that people were engaging with what I was producing and liking what they saw.

"It’s an amazing process because you create your paintings in the studio and

you just don’t know how they will be received. But by my third year of college I had three galleries showing my work and commissions were beginning to come in."

Talking of her paintings and the exhibition Julie said: "I really want people to feel welcome and comfortable.

There is no obligation to spend lots of time viewing my work. There will be nothing stiff or starchy about it. I am looking forward to the Saturdays when I will be painting live."

To get an idea of the style and thinking behind Julie’s paintings she told me: "I paint with a sense of ‘Place’, but very loose and free. Places tell stories where fragmented fables and memories intermingle. I seek to describe the landscape which exists in actuality and memory.

"The work is ambiguous, anonymous with incomplete and open narrative inviting the viewer to bring their

own autobiographies and be transported by a desire to transcend to somewhere in the past.

"Suggestions of habitation appear in the light and structure of possible buildings or ruins where the painting becomes something tangible yet remains fleeting and unattainable.

"I make the work spontaneously and intuitively, creating enigmatic compositions where visual information is subtracted and abstracted allowing the process to inform the work. The tactile nature of oil paint induces a compelling and sensitive response to the materials producing fluid and organic looking imagery and forms."

Introducing the team at the latest eatery that’s going down a storm with diners in Plymouth: Mat, owner and head chef; Lisa, secretary and all-round-helper-with-everything; Harry, bar manager; Alfie, apprentice chef; and Freddie, aged eight, whose name inspired the name of the restaurant, Fred’s Kitchen.

Collectively, Mat, Lisa, Harry, Alfie and Freddie are the Norton family. Add manager Rhys Hannacott to the mix and it seems they’ve come up with a winning recipe with Fred’s Kitchen.

It only opened its doors at 42 Bretonside in November and already it has developed a reputation for great British food and has grown a customer base that includes lots of ‘returners’.

For Mat, the rapid success vindicates his decision to leave his position as head chef at River Cottage Canteen at the Royal William Yard to open his own place: “It’s amazing,” said Mat. “I never expected it to be this busy so soon. It’s blown me away.

It’s been round-the-clock hard work since we opened but I’m not going to stop until the place is completely rammed!”

Mat has been a chef since leaving school and has worked in France and at a number of restaurants in England, including under the famous Swiss chef, Willi Elsener, at the Dorchester in London. He moved to Plymouth in 2007 and worked as head chef for the Brunning family at their establishments, The Bridge at Mountbatten and the Turtley Corn Mill at Avonwick.

It was while working full-time at The Bridge in 2011 that Mat launched the original Fred’s Kitchen as a business from home, making chutneys, pickles and sauces and selling them at markets. These are now used in the restaurant and are also available to buy.

In 2015, Mat became head chef at Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen: “I loved every minute of my time there,” said Mat. “I learnt so much from Hugh. He’s very inspiring and has an immense knowledge about food.

“But in August I mentioned to Lisa that I wanted my own restaurant. I was driving past this place every day – it’s on one of the busiest roads in Plymouth – and thought ‘why don’t I

Mat added: “This is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life and I’m overwhelmed with how it’s going. It’s going to be an exciting 2017.”

That was on 1 October and a lot of work had to be done to knock the premises, formerly the Mediterranean restaurant, B.E.D, into shape: “I knew exactly what I wanted to do in terms of the look and feel of the place and in terms of the food,” said Mat. “I wanted a rustic, cosy, relaxing, warm feel. It took me and an electrician two weeks to do the main part of the work.

Everything needed to be done but I did it sensibly. I recycled the wooden bar that was here and used wooden pallets and scaffolding planks for a lot of the work and it’s helped to create that rustic feel I was looking for.”

The soft furnishings, including the seat covers and cushions, have been made by Mat’s mum, Christine, who is an interior designer.

Mat was keen for the food to reflect the ambience: great British fare that would give customers a warm glow: “I want to bring the old back and make it new. For example, one of our most popular dishes is the rabbit stew with a whole carrot on the top. The aim is to give people what they want and I’ve kept everything very simple. It’s hearty, rustic food. It’s my menu and I put my own stamp on the dishes, but not too much of a twist.

Caroline’s long standing problems relieved by Foot Solutions Mother of three Caroline Mann has spent most of her working life on her feet.

Caroline, who lives in St Judes, worked in a local fish and chip shop for more than 30 years and for the last three years has worked as a cleaner in the mornings at Plymouth’s Central Library, in the evenings at another council building and at lunchtimes she is a catering assistant at a primary school.

Her busy work routine finally started to take its toll as Caroline began to experience severe pain in her toes, the balls of her feet and also her legs.

“By the time I got home each day my feet were throbbing and the pain was pretty unbearable,” said Caroline. “I had to take pain killers three or four times a day just to be able to keep working.”

The constant pain was making life increasingly uncomfortable for Caroline and was also badly affecting her sleep.

In the end Caroline decided she had to take some positive steps…to the Foot Solutions store in Plymouth’s Royal Parade.

“I didn’t want to waste my GP’s time as I felt that Foot Solutions would be able to do more for me,” she added.

An in-depth assessment of Caroline’s feet and posture was undertaken, which highlighted the painful condition in the balls of her feet.

Weddings are big business in Plymouth and this special supplement is designed to provide some fresh ideas for couples who are planning to get married.

It is also a platform for businesses and individuals to promote their products and services.

There are some fantastic wedding venues in and around the city and a number of them are featured in this supplement.

We have taken the opportunity to tell you more about some of the talented suppliers from Plymouth who help make the big day even more special.

At the end of last year we ran a competition inviting local wedding photographers to submit their favourite image with the prospect of the best one being featured on the front cover of our special wedding supplement.

The winning image was taken by local photographer Michelle Letts, who runs Little Star Images. We asked Plymouth Magazine readers to select their favourite image from the three chosen for the shortlist - and Michelle’s photo was the clear winner.

Nearly 750 votes were cast and Michelle secured well over half of them for her photo taken in Devonport Park.

Michelle, who has a home studio in Crownhill, started her photographic business three years ago, mainly specialising in photos of new born Michelle Letts babies.

A former accountant, she turned her hobby into a successful enterprise and now also has many wedding bookings all over the South West.

Of her winning image Michelle said: “The couple had their wedding at Plymouth Albion’s ground, which did not provide too many special photo opportunities.

“I suggested Devonport Park because I knew the bandstand would provide an ideal backdrop. They had not been to the park before and thought it was perfect. It was a military wedding, so it made for a great photo.”

Play your cards right with the Wedding Game If you’re scratching your head over how to get your wedding reception off to a cracking start with everyone mingling and having fun right from the off, then a new personalised card game launched by Plymouth businesswomen Laura Joint could be just what you’re looking for.

The cards have questions about the couple with the correct answer and two spoof wrong answers. Each table has a pack, with each guest taking a card with a quiz question for the rest of the table to answer.

Laura explained: “It brings something completely new to the table, literally, and it helps to remove those awkward silences that can often break out.

Laura, a former BBC journalist, got the idea after writing several life stories, some of them ‘potted’ versions for couples getting married: “In the biographies I interview people and write up their stories. The idea of doing a card quiz that reveals quirky, funny or interesting facts about the couples came out of that.

“They just need to send me a selection of questions with the correct and two incorrect answers, plus a couple of nice head shots and the date of their wedding and I create their personalised cards.

“I think the ideal mix is a selection of questions about each of them and some about them as a couple as well. The questions can be as silly, sensible or as romantic as they like, although I personally think that silly is good! It’s just a bit of fun although the wedding couples might want to give a little prize to each table winner and the cards can double up as a wedding favour too,” she added.

The game, which has a registered trademark, has already been embraced by The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, who are keen to promote the game to their wedding couples.

Leila Nottage, the hotel’s director of marketing said: “Laura has offered us the opportunity to create a branded version of the game featuring the established fleur-de-lys from our logo, which will replace the hearts. We think this is a great way to personalise your wedding and get your guests talking!”

Award-winning duo The Swing Kings have gained an enviable reputation for providing a unique and tailored entertainment service which allows the bride and groom to choose their own wedding music and help create their own show.

The Swing Kings, who are based in Plymouth, came into being five years ago when soloists Richard Godefroy and Danny Jones were performing at a local music showcase.

Richard, 31, said: “I hadn’t met Danny before, but after hearing him sing I approached him and asked if he had ever considered being part of a duo.

The Wedd - inspiring c Plymouth boasts many talented individuals and organisations who provide a range of products and services for the local wedding industry.

One of them is local mum Danielle Donnelly who launched Faithful Designs, a bespoke wedding stationery and styling service in 2011 – and since then has won a host of awards for her work.

Not content with running her own successful business, Danielle launched The Wedding Hub two years ago to provide a showcase for the many creatives working in the city.

“I met so many talented people who, like me, were working from home and realised that there was the potential to provide a focal point for all this creativity,” said Danielle.

“Since starting up my wedding stationery business I’ve learned a great deal, come up against a mountain of obstacles and made some truly wonderful friends who continue to be my inspiration because of how talented and dedicated they are.”

“We all work so very hard to reach our goals and I know first hand how tough we are on ourselves.”

Danielle was determined to find premises that would provide a shop window for the many suppliers she had met and formed relationships with.

After a brief spell located in Stoke Village, Danielle took over larger premises in Waterloo Street, Stoke. She describes it as ‘a creative wedding space for couples and suppliers to find inspiration.’

“Right from the beginning I wanted to help and offer other creative wedding folk a space to showcase and sell their work, a place that really complements and focuses on their worth and talents as providers of unique hand crafted products.

“I want The Wedding Hub to be a place where couples can come to be inspired, somewhere they can find a collection of what I believe to be some of the best suppliers of bespoke loveliness in the wedding industry.”

The Wedding Hub now works with dozens of local suppliers, with a number of them displaying products in the Waterloo Street shop, everything from cake toppers to wedding dresses.

LIGHTING UP THE SPECIAL OCCASION

Wedding couples can now have their name in lights - literally - thanks to South West Letter Lights, who are based near Plymouth.

The enterprise was launched just two years ago by father and son Alan and Richard Godefroy and their letter lights are one of the most popular wedding enhancements to date.

Richard has worked in the wedding industry for several years, performing in the award-winning wedding band The Swing Kings. He was performing at a wedding in the Midlands three years ago and saw letter lights for the first time.

Richard said: “I thought they were fantastic and after a lot of research I discovered there was no-one supplying them in the South West.”

He and his father Alan - who has been working in decorating and interior design for 25 years - have established a workshop in Yealmpton where another member of the family, brother-in-law carpenter and joiner Michael Francis makes the lights.

“Each light is made with total care

and attention to ensure the highest possible quality,” said Richard. “Our individual letters measure four feet high by just under three feet wide.

All letter lights are finished in eggshell white and house 3W Warm White Led bulbs which are cold to the touch.

“We started with the letters for LOVE and now have multiples of the alphabet as well as several sets of LOVE. MR & MRS is also very popular, but we can almost supply any word you like. We have a lot of stock or we can make more letters in our workshop.

“They are really popular and add something really special to the couple’s big day.”

Magic moments with Kristien Harris Weddings are always magical occasions - but there’s even more magic on offer with close up artist extraordinaire and street entertainer Kristien Harris.

Plymouth-based Kristien began his venture as a professional magician three years ago - but his passion for magic started many years before that.

“I did my first gig at the age of 17, but I’ve always been interested in magic, and anything that seemed magical to me – such as poetry or painting,” said Kristien.

“There were a couple reasons why I began to take it more seriously around the age of 12. One story is that my Grandad used to keep a pocket knife which he would take with him when visiting garden centres.

“He would walk around making discreet clippings of all the different plants he wanted so he wouldn’t have to pay for them. I always saw that as a great example of sleight of hand! My Dad also used to play a lot of cards. He was the one who taught me how to cut a deck of cards with one hand.”

Kristien has come a long way from the days when cutting a deck of cards was his proudest feat. He now specialises in close up entertainment, sleight of hand, table top ruses, card tricks, illusions with small objects such as coins, as well as beginning to work on his street entertainment routine.

Having worked with the BBC, St Austell Brewery, Plymouth University and The Treasury to name just a few, Kristien is confident in his ability to wow his audience, whether he’s working a private party or a corporate event.

Kristien’s attitude is cool and casual, with a nonintrusive mix and mingle approach to his tableside magicianship.

Affiliated with the Plymouth Magic Circle and the Cornish Magic Society, Kristien provides a fun and unique addition to the special day.

Pro dancer Melissa helping couples and guests make all the right moves!

With a passion for dancing from the age of three, you could say that Melissa Fensom was born to dance.

From child dancer to stage professional, Melissa is now helping to bring a wow factor to wedding receptions by teaching wedding dances to couples, as well as hen party dances and flash mob dances for guests to surprise the bride and groom.

Melissa, from Plympton, set up her business, The Dance Shed, in 2014 after a recurring back injury brought a premature end to her dance career.

“I started ballet lessons when I was three and dancing was always what I wanted to do as a career. My parents encouraged me to consider other options because a dancer’s career tends

to be quite short but they could also see my determination and passion. They fully supported me and made it possible for me to train professionally. I had a very successful career and I loved every minute of it.”

Melissa’s career took her to venues across the UK and Europe in a wide variety of shows. But when her back injury grew gradually worse Melissa was forced to retire when she was 28: “That was devastating news for me, a very sad time.”

Her love of dance meant she was always going to find a new way of continuing in the profession, however. With The Dance Shed, she teaches children aged from 2½ to adults, and she also specialises in choreographing and teaching dances for weddings.

“Where the dance is for the bride and groom, it’s usually a song that means something to them as a couple,” said Melissa. “So it’s a song that they choose and the dance will be one that they’re comfortable and happy with. It’s completely bespoke and personal so the dance is choreographed 100% for them.

“The very first one I did was a Charleston with comedy elements; others are romantic. I’ve choreographed wedding songs that range from rock to ballads.

“The men can sometimes be a bit unsure to start with but at the end of the first lesson they admit that they are really enjoying it,” she added. “It challenges their preconceptions of dance and they grow in confidence very quickly.”

The lessons are usually in three one-hour sessions, held two weeks apart, and completed one week before the wedding: “But they must practice in between,” said Melissa. “If we find that an idea doesn’t work we’ll try something else.”

Melissa also teaches dances for hen parties. The 90-minute session can be held in a studio during the day or in the evening at a space at Annabel’s nightclub on the Barbican, with cocktails thrown in. “All the hen dances I’ve done have been great fun, we’ve laughed and laughed,” said Melissa. “And they can do the dance they’ve learned at the wedding as well.”

Stag party dances and flash mob dances are also popular, and bridesmaids are increasingly choosing to learn a dance to surprise the couple on the big day. Melissa can also choreograph a dance for flower girls and page boys.

“I think Strictly Come Dancing has got a lot to do with why people want to learn to dance now,” she said. “It has shown that it’s possible and that age is no barrier for dance.

You just have to give it a go and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. It’s a really memorable thing to do at a

wedding; it makes it even more special. Afterwards, it’s what everyone seems to talk about.”

And Melissa added: “I absolutely love teaching dances for weddings! I always think of them on the day and it’s lovely to see the photos afterwards. The feedback is great too. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to hear how the dance really added to everyone’s enjoyment on the day.”

Blockbuster musical Chess comes to Devonport Playhouse

With none other than Sir Tim Rice completing the songwriting team on this spectacular show it is hardly any wonder that it was a huge hit when it debuted in London in 1986.

Shangri La and Orangutans Borneo has so much to offer!

I was recently lucky enough to be selected for an educational trip to Borneo and Kuala Lumpur. This was a fantastic opportunity to experience a destination which had always appealed to me, but apart from the obvious Orangutan attraction I wasn’t sure what else it had to offer.

My trip began with a 12 hour flight on a Malaysian Airlines

By Andrea James A380 flight to Kuala Lumpur of Peter Goord followed by a two hour flight to Kota Kinabalu, (or KK as it’s Travel affectionately known to the locals).

Upon arrival we had a short 10 minute transfer to the gorgeous Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa. This resort is set on the South China Sea and is the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail as you watch the sunset.

The resort is bursting with activities for all ages and the Marine Centre offers diving trips, snorkelling and trips to neighbouring islands.

The following day we had an early start as we were off on the highlight of our trip, to visit the Orangutans! We had to return to KK airport for a one hour flight to Sepilok, (this journey can be done by road but it can take up to seven hours, so I would only recommend this with an overnight stop). Before being allowed in to the Sepilok Rehabilitation Sanctuary we were advised that it wasn’t a zoo and

Orangutan sighting isn’t guaranteed.

We had to leave all belongings in our coach as the Orangutans have a habit of stealing things and heading off into the rainforest. As you can imagine, sun creams and cosmetics can be extremely harmful to them. Phones and cameras are allowed as long as you are aware of the risks!

The thought of an Orangutan getting hold of my I-Phone and taking a few 'selfies' was intriguing.

We visited at feeding time and we were lucky enough so see several Orangutans; one was even curious enough to walk among us and ignore the ranger when he tried to ‘shoo’ him away. I expect he had worked out the 'phones and camera' rule and was on the look out for an upgrade!

Although the public viewing platform is within the ape’s free roaming area, human interaction is discouraged as the ultimate aim is to rehabilitate them sufficiently to be released back into the wild.

Next we visited the nursery, where we could view the baby Orangutans interacting with each other through one way glass. This reminded me of watching naughty children at play as they stole bananas and chased each other around. It is strange how warm you feel towards these distant cousins with their human-like characteristics and strong family bonds. It was a truly moving experience.

The “close to nature” theme continued when we spent a couple of hours at the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre, a rescue and rehabilitation facility dedicated to the world’s smallest bears.

Malayan Sun Bears are only found in Southeast Asia and get their name from the golden fur around their neck. This pint size creature is under threat due to forest degradation and illegal poaching of cubs to serve the

pet trade. Tragically adults are hunted for consumption, medicine and decorative purposes making the whole species vulnerable in the wild. Resembling Paddington Bear without his duffle coat and hat it was impossible not to feel emotional about their potential extinction.

We rounded off our visit to Sepilok with a short drive to the Rainforest Discovery Centre. Although the main purpose of the centre remains as an environmental education establishment for students and teachers, it has opened its doors to the public since August 2007.

This attraction has become extremely popular with birdwatchers and also features a huge selection of flowering plants and trees. All of this is viewed from tree-top canopy walkways – just beware of the monkeys!

Although the day in Sepilok was long and busy, it was definitely worth the time and effort. So, exhausted, but full of reflection, we set off for a couple of days of rest and relaxation on the beautiful Gaya Island.

Gaya Island or Pulau Gaya as it’s also known is the largest island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. It is covered with dense virgin, tropical forest and boasts two five-star beach resorts.

The island is reached by a 10 minute speedboat ride from downtown KK. As you approach the island you really feel like you’ve arrived in paradise. This is definitely the place to switch off and unwind… yoga, spa treatments and enjoying the marine life are the order of the day.

It’s not unusual to spot a wild boar walking along the beach or for a monkey to join you for lunch. Luckily the monkeys are quite used to hotel guests and generally keep

themselves to themselves.

With our batteries fully charged it was time to trek the majestic 4095m tall Mount Kinabulu, known as Borneo’s backbone. The mountain and its surroundings are among the most important biological sites in the world, with between 5,000 and 6,000 species of plants, over 325 species of birds, and more than 100 mammal species identified. As a result Mount Kinabalu has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status.

Usually people will take two days to complete these treks, camping overnight half way up. Due to time restrictions we were only able to do a half day trek, but it still gave the opportunity to sample this beautiful area and its fantastic views.

I am often asked the best time of year to visit Borneo. I think the term 'rainforest' can make visitors wary of the weather they may encounter. Borneo has a tropical climate and enjoys hot, sunny days year round. However, as you would expect, it also experiences heavy rainfall.

April signals the beginning of the dry season, which continues through until October. I travelled in June and the weather was mostly good, although we did have occasional, heavy downpours.

In summing-up I feel Borneo is a destination that will appeal to people who enjoy an adventurous type of holiday with the bonus of fantastic beaches. I think to travel all that way just to sit on the sand would be to miss the point – it’s too good to be just a beach destination, go and explore. You won’t regret it!

Providing a loving and stable home life for every child is vital, yet whilst the number of children needing a foster family continues to rise, there remains not enough foster carers available to meet this need.

Peter Churchill, senior practitioner at Five Rivers Child Care, manages its fostering service for Plymouth and is keen to dispel the misconceptions about who can become a foster carer, such as having to be married or owning your own home.

"Our foster carers come from all different backgrounds – they can be single, same sex partners, retired, have their own children at home or have children who have reached adulthood and left home. Some foster carers have not had children but are experienced in other ways such as working with children or caring for family.

"We look for people who are resilient, compassionate and motivated to want to make a difference and these qualities are not defined by a social status, race or ethnicity. In terms of age, our foster carers need to be over the age of twenty one to apply.

course a financial income. In addition, we offer support groups and events with children and foster carers to celebrate their achievements.

"Our fundamental belief is that every child, regardless of their own background and experiences, deserves the right to have a family to look after them and to provide real opportunities for them to achieve their potential."

All Five Rivers foster carers have their own qualified and experienced social worker, providing guidance, advice and support. Foster carers also have access to our 24 hour dedicated telephone support and benefit from access to our support workers and respite opportunities.

The role of a foster carer is a challenging one, as children and young people may have experienced neglect, abuse or trauma in their early lives.

However, the rewards of helping children and young people are truly life enriching and consistently our foster carers tell us that it gives them an enormous sense of pride and achievement in helping a young person on their journey through to adulthood.

One of the Five Rivers foster carers recently gave an insight into her experience of looking after children over the last 20 years and Kathy is happy to share her experience to show how becoming a foster carer can make a lasting and positive difference to the life of a young person.

Why did you become a foster carer Kathy?

We didn’t have children and were both working and thought we had something to offer young people. I was working with children and teenagers at the time and both Steve and I were involved in their lives. We answered an advert by Five Rivers in the paper to become Foster Carers.

What are the challenges and achievements that you have seen with the children in your care?

The challenges are many, seeing a young person come into your home scared, confused, powerless and feeling alone.

We see a range of behaviours from tears and withdrawn children to angry and verbally aggressive young people. But none of them want to be in the situation they find themselves in. We can help that child or young person to understand why they have had to come and live with us and eventually to flourish. If we can make a difference in one child’s life it will be our best achievement.

What are the three most important qualities of a foster carer?

You need patience, to learn about your foster child, they

don’t know your routines and rules and they are terrified. You need to be able to adapt, to change your plans and to arrange your life to meet all the needs of the young person, such as attend school meetings.

Most of all, you need commitment to embrace the challenges that lie ahead and learn about the young person that has come to live with you.

How has foster caring made a difference in your life?

Fostering has been a way of life for us, from when we were first married. It has enriched our lives meeting so many young people, who have faced adversity and challenges. We have also met their families and we are proud to see how many of them manage to change their lives around to meet the needs of their children.

What support did you receive from initial application through to being experienced foster carer?

We have an excellent supervising social worker who comes to our home monthly to chat about how things are going and what support needs we may have. She guides us on our journey.

We attend support groups where we meet other foster carers and social workers to learn about what current and new training is available to help us meet the needs of youngsters in our care. Other carers and the social workers can offer support and strategies that may help change a certain behaviour or make it less challenging to live with.

What would you say to someone thinking about becoming a foster carer?

Do it! It is a fabulous journey and will make the best difference to children living in adversity. We need more foster carers to make sure every child in need gets the best family they can.

Tom Daley still draws the crowds Local hero and diving star Tom Daley showed he has lost none of his crowd pulling power when he returned home for a book signing.

Waterstones in Drake Circus was packed with fans when the Plymouth born, Olympic athlete dropped in as a part of a nationwide book shop and TV tour to promote his new book Tom’s Daily Plan.

Featuring more than 80 easy-to-prepare recipes, home workouts for all fitness levels, and lifestyle tips, Tom’s Daily Plan shows the reader, in simple steps how they can train their body and mind to reach their health and fitness goals.

Tom Daley said: “As an Olympian, who trains for five hours a day, six days a week, I have learnt a huge amount about food and nutrition and have spent a lot of time trying to learn about my body and mind so I can perform to the best of my ability. This book aims to pass on some of these ideas, so that you can achieve your best and feel amazing, all day, every day.”

Tom’s mum Debbie was at the signing and among those early in the queue for signed copies of the book was Dayne Paull who showed Tom his ‘tribute’ tattoo. Tom was very surprised and instantly recorded the event and Dayne went home and told the world on his Facebook page, ‘still buzzing four hours later’.

One of the world’s most recognised Olympic athletes, Tom Daley is well known for the incredible achievements he has made at such a young age. Tom first made a name for himself when he won gold at the European Championship in 2008 as a 13-year old, becoming Britain’s second youngest male Olympian of all time.

2012 saw him winning the overall FINA World Series title, alongside his second European gold, before qualifying for London 2012.

Since scooping a bronze medal at the London Olympics while 2016 saw Tom competing at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Inheritance and Divorce Is your husband or wife able to make a claim against your inheritance if you divorce? This is a question that we are often asked by clients who have received an inheritance in the past or are likely to in the future.

The general starting point is that all assets are treated as matrimonial assets and form part of the “pot” to be split unless one person can establish otherwise. Every case is different and has to be considered on its own circumstances but the size of the inheritance, when it was received, how it was treated during the marriage, and most importantly,

the financial needs of both parties are all issues which will need to be considered.

Each case is different and depends on the individual facts but we were given some basic guidelines on how to treat inheritance in a recent Court of Appeal case: l If inherited assets are transferred from one person’s name into joint names or used for the benefit of the family, then they are much more likely to be considered matrimonial assets and be shared. l If the inheritance is received shortly before the breakdown of the marriage it is less likely to be included in the matrimonial assets for division, provided that the other assets are sufficient to meet both people’s needs.

The most important issue for us to consider is the needs of the family; especially where there are children. If the only way to meet those needs is by using some or all of the inheritance or assets bought from the inheritance the Court is likely to do this.

If you know that you are likely to inherit or have inherited recently or if you know that your child is going to inherit and you want to protect that inheritance, you may want to consider entering into either a pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreement or consider setting up a trust.

Dealing with inheritance in a divorce is complicated and depends on the circumstances of each case.

Get your conservatory project right with Ryan’s step-by-step guide Adding a beautiful conservatory to your home is one of the biggest investments you’re ever likely to make, so it pays to get it right.

But with so many options and differing opinions as to what’s best, where can you find the objective information and advice you need to make an informed decision? And how do you negotiate the often complicated and changing regulations that dictate what permissions might or might not be required before you even start?

Thankfully, help is at hand from an expert who has 25 years of experience in the business. Ryan Barrett of Realistic Conservatories has compiled a 38-page Buyer’s Guide downloadable from the website which goes through everything, step by step. You could say it’s all the information you need under one roof!

roof extension for their home: “I recommend that anyone seriously considering a conservatory should take the time to read the guide,” he said. “It’s comprehensive and the advice is in simple, straightforward language that people can understand.”

There are sections on frames, glass, materials, styles, roofs, insulation, the rules you need to follow, and the installation process once you’ve made the right choice for you.

Without exception, the starting point for anyone considering the process should be to ask themselves the question: “Why do I want a conservatory?” Ryan explained: “Ask yourself: What is its function? What do you want to use the extra space for?

Is it a summer room? Is it to provide more space for your living room or your kitchen? Will it have all-year use? Do you want a solid roof? The answers to these questions will determine what’s best for your particular requirements. It may or may not involve planning permission or building regulations. A solid roof, for example, is actually an extension and requires that you go through building regulations.

“Without clear guidance, it can be a minefield. With clear guidance, you’ll get it right from start to finish. The key is to get that guidance from someone who has the expertise and knowledge because you don’t want to listen to bad advice. And sadly, there is a lot of bad advice out there.”

Ryan has taken the time to compile the guide so that homeowners can sidestep that bad advice: “Whether

people buy from us or not is irrelevant,” he said. “We’re in a fortunate position in that we’re doing more jobs and bigger jobs than ever before.

“So the reason we’ve done the guide is because we want people to avoid the pitfalls.

A conservatory is an investment purchase; you have to go into it with your eyes open. Do your homework, deal with the facts, listen to the experts. By the time you’re ready to approach a supplier you should know what you need and you’ll also know the right questions to ask.”

With new technologies emerging and products developing all the time, Ryan intends to update the brochure every 12 months: “Our biggest sellers weren’t even on the market three years ago so it’s not surprising that a lot of people aren’t aware of what’s on the market today. We’ll be giving the very latest advice.”

One thing’s for sure: with conservatories, as with everything, you’ll generally get what you pay for. “Look beyond the price,” said Ryan. “The lowest price isn’t necessarily the best for you.”

For Ryan, conservatories are a passion and he admits he can talk about them till the cows come home! “I like people

“Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave and grow old wanting to get back to” (John Ed Pearce) We are often contacted by clients desperate to protect their main asset – their home – for their children. Does this sound familiar to you? Are you worried about using up your hard-earned money and property to pay for care or to foot an inheritance tax bill on your death?

You may be aware that there are changes afoot which may at least assuage your concerns about inheritance tax. From 6 April 2017 there will be an additional nil-rate band available when a residence passes on death to one or more direct descendants (i.e. child/ren). This starts at £100,000, increasing incrementally each tax year until it reaches

£175,000 from 6 April 2020.

Added to the current individual nil-rate band (£325,000) this means that there will, by April 2020, be £500,000 available before any inheritance tax becomes chargeable when you pass your home to your child/ren. If you are married, it will also still be possible to transfer this £500,000 to a surviving spouse’s estate meaning that for many couples, provided their combined estate does not exceed £1 million, there will be no inheritance tax to pay.

Bearing this in mind, inheritance tax may no longer be of concern. However, what if it still is or you are worried about protecting your house from care-home fees? The short answer is that there is no magic wand. Many people may have heard and read about options such as giving away the home to family in their lifetime or putting the house into trust. It is perfectly possible to do this but, be warned – there are potential pitfalls:

2. Trusts can be expensive to set up and you may have to pay an immediate inheritance tax charge as well as 10 yearly charges after the trust is established.

3. You could miss out on important Capital Gains Tax savings.

4. You may be accused of deliberately depriving yourself of assets by the Local Authority if you ever require care.

5. Once given away the house is no longer yours. If a child divorces, goes bankrupt or dies you may find yourself, in the worst case scenario, without a home at all.

One hundred per cent of all the NHS Trusts in England are offering the opportunity to participate in health research to patients according to a league table published recently by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN).

The 2015/16 NIHR Research Activity League Table shows all NHS Trusts in England are delivering clinical research, providing thousands more patients access to better treatments and care.

For the second consecutive year running South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is the most research active ambulance service in England out of 10 ambulance services.

SWASFT has achieved an unprecedented increase in the number of clinical research studies its frontline emergency crews are offering their patients. In 2015/16 SWASFT recruited 2,341 people to eight research studies compared with 386 participants enrolled to four studies in 2013/14.

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust chief executive officer Ken Wenman said: “We are delighted to be the top ambulance service in England for running the most clinical research studies. We pride ourselves on being a forward thinking organisation, putting patient care and safety at the heart of everything we do.

“By participating in research initiatives we can directly help patients to receive even higher standards of clinical care. Our research and development team continue to work incredibly hard embedding a research culture across the organisation and has already made incredible progress.

“This is extremely challenging when taking our geography into account. The Trust’s workforce operates from over 100 sites across an area spanning one fifth of England.”

Promoting, conducting and using clinical research to improve treatments for patients is part of the NHS England Constitution. The NIHR Research Activity League Table provides a picture of how much clinical research is happening, where, in what trusts and involving how many patients.

Commercial research activity is an added feature for the 2015/16 league table. Collaboration with industry is vital to enable the NHS to deliver first class clinical research, speeding up the development and availability of new treatments, therapies and diagnostics.

The data shows that a record number of commercial contract research studies have been delivered by NHS trusts in England over the last five years [650 in 2015/16].

NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group area (Cornwall & Isles of Scilly) is ranked joint top CCG nationally for conducting 19 commercial clinical research studies.

Primary care research in GP practices and community healthcare settings is also highlighted as part of the report.

Last year over 42% of GP practices in England recruited people to NIHR research studies.

Chief executive officer of the NIHR CRN, Dr Jonathan Sheffield said: “The outlook is very encouraging. The league table results are a great achievement for all involved and highlight the growing commitment to research from the NHS and patients.”

voice to Lost for Words campaign A group of 24 stroke survivors and carers from the Stroke Association’s Sing Out choir in Plymouth are adding their voice to charity’s latest campaign: Lost for Words.

The Stroke Association’s Lost for Words campaign aims to raise awareness of the challenges stroke survivors with communication difficulties can face, and help and support available.

In 2011 Charlie Martin, 65, from Plymouth, had a stroke which left him paralysed on the right hand side of his body.

He was also left with the communication difficulty, aphasia.

Charlie and his wife Margaret have been attending the Sing Out group for the past two years. Margaret said: “After Charlie had his stroke we were devastated; everything suddenly changed and he could only say a handful of words.

“When I heard him in the kitchen one morning singing along to the radio, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Whilst Charlie’s speech was really affected, his ability to sing was perfect.

“A couple of months later, I found out about the Stroke Association’s singing group at the Plymouth Music Zone.

I used to drop Charlie off each week, and when I picked him up he would have a big beaming smile on his face.

The singing group lifted his spirits, made him feel part of something, and most importantly it proved that he wasn’t alone.

“It didn’t take long until I was persuaded to join the group too. Being part of the choir has been so special; it’s

Caroline Shepherd, Communication Support coordinator at the Stroke Association in Plymouth, said: “After a stroke, around one in three people like Charlie have difficulty communicating, which can be both terrifying and isolating.

Charlie is a huge inspiration and it’s been fantastic to see his confidence grow as he performs.

“Singing is an important part of a stroke survivor’s recovery; it is often easier for people to communicate through song than speech because a different part of the brain is used. As well as singing, we want to build the confidence of our members too.

“We’re really proud of all the members in the Sing Out group and look forward to working on new songs in the New Year.”

Introducing Hellebore stars at this tim

The best winter flowering plant and a true star of the garden at this time of year is the Hellebore.

They have an outstanding resilience to the winter weather and will flower on proudly in the face of the elements.

The flowers are large and have incredible durability. Once flowering, they will last for several months before fading.

In recent years, breeders have been experimenting with Hellebores, by crossing varieties and concentrating on creating, strong vigorous, floriferous plants in new and striking colours.

Prices of Hellebores are high for the new varieties, but that is because they tend to be sterile, so won’t produce seed, so they have to be reproduced through cuttings. Although this process is more costly and pushes up the price of the plant, it does guarantee that you are getting a plant that is identical to the parent and hasn’t lost any of the attributes it was bred for.

You will be guaranteed strong, healthy, vigorous plants.

Hellebores are extremely versatile plants and will tolerate and grow very well in a wide range of conditions. Whatever spot you have in the garden, there will be a variety of hellebore that will thrive in that spot.

Dry shade Helleborus x niger ‘Gold Series’ This collection of Hellebores is the result of creating hybrid between the shade-loving Helleborus niger (the Christmas rose) and various other varieties of Hellebore. From 100,000 plants, the collection has been painstakingly and rigorously trialled and tested and whittled down to 20 varieties in the collection.

Only the strongest plants with the best flowering habits and colour were added to the collection. They are some of the most vigorous and resilient of hellebores and will do well in dry shade, especially if watered and fed after planting to help it settle in.

It also features green flowers flushed with pink carried on purple stems in late winter. Also try Helleborus x ericsmithii.

Shady containers Helleborus x ericsmithii varieties Containers tend to be sited in key positions and where they are often seen close-up, they are ‘Penny’s Pink’, ‘Molly’s White’ and ‘Angel Glow’ with attractive foliage and pretty flowers are ideal for it. They flower from February through to April and produce an abundance of flowers. After the flowers on all three have faded, it is important to remove the flowering stalks and any dead or tatty foliage to keep the plants looking their best.

It steadily expands into increasingly impressive clumps and takes clay in the wetter winter months as well as in summer. An amazing modern range of double flowering orientalis Hellebore bred for their unique colours and markings. They love a partially shaded spot and if left undisturbed they will produce the most beautiful flowers from January to April.

Well-drained soil Helleborus x ballardiae ‘Cinnamon Snow’ Fertile, well-drained soil suits this hybrid between the Majorcan Hellebores lividus and the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, very well. The evergreen blue-green foliage may be marbled or have a silver sheen and is a lovely background for the clusters of pink buds that appear in early spring, opening to large, outfacing, creamy-white flowers that are streaked rose and cinnamon.
