Volunteers wanted to help Plymouth become UK’s first plastic-free coastline city

Plymouth is bidding to become the UK’s first plastic-free coastline city - but campaigners need to recruit an army of plastic free ambassadors from the local community to achieve the goal.

A three year plan for a plastic free Plymouth Sound is under way - but it needs to step up a level.

Plastic free ambassadors can be individuals, families or community groups and anyone worried about the threat of plastic is being encouraged to sign up.

Organisers are also looking for local businesses to become plastic free pioneers who may have been inspired by the recent action on single use plastics.

Plans will be announced soon on a range of actions and activities designed to put Britain’s Ocean City at the forefront of the battle against plastic pollution.

Beach and waterfront clean ups are organised regularly with details available on the ‘Plastic Free Plymouth Sound’ Facebook page.

National marine park plan for Plymouth Sound Labour MP Luke Pollard and a Plymouth University expert have called on Parliament to designate Plymouth Sound as the UK’s first national marine park.

Luke Pollard led a roundtable discussion attended by fellow MPs as well as experts from Natural England, Worldwide Fund for Nature, Wildlife Trist and the New Economics Foundation.

Plymouth University Professor Martin Attrill also made a keynote presentation at the event in Westminster.

He explained why marine national parks could be important and put forward Plymouth as the perfect location to test the concept due to its profile as Britain’s Ocean City and vibrant fishing industry.

Designating Plymouth Sound and Plymouth’s surrounding coastal waters as the UK’s first national marine park was an election pledge from Luke Pollard in the General Election last year.

Since June, he has been holding meetings in Plymouth to prepare proposals for a national marine park. The Westminster roundtable brought together MPs from all parties with Plymouth’s experts and London-based organisations, journalists, marine experts, government agencies and environmental campaigners.

The idea to consult on the creation of national marine parks was recently included in Labour’s new animal welfare plans. Like the classification of national parks which exist to protect the country’s green spaces, national marine parks aim to protect coastal waters, the seabed and marine habitats by bench-marking, monitoring and implementing changes to protect the environment.

make the case alongside Luke for the creation of national marine parks. The aim of the discussion was to establish the need for national marine parks to increase public engagement with the UK’s marine environment. While fishing is important to the UK economy, by expanding and diversifying the use of our coastal seas we can also massively boost coastal economies like Plymouth.

“Plymouth is the perfect location to receive a national marine park classification, as we benefit from a huge marine science community, a long maritime heritage, and are surrounded by national parks in Dartmoor and Exmoor. Most importantly, we have wonderful marine life fit for Blue Planet right here in our waters so we just need people to love and cherish the marine environment.

“A national marine park designation would be a huge asset to Plymouth and the opportunities that come from designations are exciting. We could see improvements in the local economy through increased employment and tourism, with new opportunities for local businesses, plus

potential benefits to health and welfare of getting people more engaged with the sea. I look forward to working with Luke in the next steps of this campaign.

Luke Pollard MP said: “Plymouth Sound already has a designated Special Area of Conservation and has Marine Conservation Zones. By consulting on this idea locally and nationally, the goal is to find a way of managing our waters to protect marine ecosystems, while sustaining naval, fishing and recreational activities.

“I am proud of Plymouth and its rich commitment to marine research and marine engineering. Not only do we have world-leading experts in our city at the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and Plymouth University, we also benefit from superb fishing grounds and a strong Naval heritage.

“Yet we simply are not doing enough to protect the beautiful sea-life and marine environment that surrounds us in Plymouth. We have an environmental responsibility to invest in our waters, and a designated National Marine Park in Plymouth would bring much-needed attention to environmental sustainability. We were all shocked by the Blue Planet documentary, which showed how urgently we must act to save our oceans. This is a first step of many towards doing that.

“I was pleased to see members from different parties join together for this important cause. I am also proud that Labour have committed to a consultation on National Marine Parks should they win at the next election.”

“I hope that this discussion is the first of many as we get closer to seeing a National Marine Park designation in Plymouth and in other coastal cities around the UK.”

High-flying Falcon team celebrates Western College Players Theatre Company are presenting a brand new adaptation of one of the greatest ever works of literature - Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.

Stagecoach’s South West Falcon service has celebrated carrying over half a million passengers by surprising customers boarding the service at Plymouth Coach Station.

Passengers waiting for the 10am departure on May 17 were met by the Stagecoach team who were handing out millionaire’s shortbread, free tickets and Falcon goodies. Mascot Pat the Falcon was also there to pose for photos.

Bob Dennison, Stagecoach South West’s managing director, said: “It’s amazing that, a little over two years since we started, we’re already celebrating this incredible milestone – and it’s fantastic to be able to share our success with our customers. This achievement is all down to our brilliant staff and our loyal passengers.”

May proved to be a bumper month for the Falcon with the service picking up silver at the UK Coach Awards for ‘Top Express Operation’ with judges commenting that it was ‘head and shoulders above’ other operators.

The operator introduced a new timetable for the service on May 21 which has been designed to improve reliability over the busy summer period.

Changes include a separate Friday timetable, more frequent journeys at the weekends and a revised route into Bristol that uses the South Bristol link road and Long Ashton Expressway.

Bob added: “The peak summer season means more holiday makers flying from Bristol Airport and more visitors heading to the South West. As we all know, this inevitably creates additional challenges on our road network. The new timetable takes these factors into consideration to

provide an even better service for our customers.”

Weekend of music to raise awareness of suicide Canadian performer Mishka Shubaly

March marked 100 years of votes for women To mark the centenary of votes for women, over 100 placard-bearing Soroptimists from Plymouth, St Austell and Torbay were joined by other women as they marched through Plymouth city centre, many wearing period costume.

The colourful parade attracted a lot of attention and media coverage including

Westcountry TV, Radio Devon and local newspapers.

Plymouth Soroptimist Hilary Preston came up with the idea and as well as organising the march, compiled a list of 100 women who have achieved a ‘first’ during the last century.

The marchers wore sashes and carried placards with the names and achievements

of the 100 notable women.

Plymouth’s then Lord Mayor Councillor Wendy Foster met the marchers at the end of the walk when everyone enjoyed afternoon tea provided by a Plymouth Soroptimist in the Council chambers.

Everyone agreed that it was a brilliant idea and all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

New artificial pitches open at Manadon

Work to create a brand new sports facility for the Manadon and Honicknowle communities reached a major milestone as young footballers took to its artificial playing pitches for the first time.

The Football Association-standard third generation pitch, which also boasts new floodlights and security fencing, is now open for use – marking the completion of the project’s first phase.

Two junior grass football pitches will follow, along with a new artificial cricket wicket and eight grass wickets, along with a two-storey pavilion with office space,

changing rooms, a training room and a multipurpose room. Improvements will also be made to the car park and entrance.

Run by the Argyle Community Trust in partnership with Plymouth City Council, the Manadon Sports and Community Hub will be one of the best sports centres in the city and transform the previously tired and run-down football pitch site.

The new facility will inspire people from across Plymouth and beyond and is expected to increase the number of people taking part in physical activity at the site from 17,500 a year to 30,000.

Argyle Community Trust manager Mark Lovell said: “Reaching this point in the

project is a huge milestone and we are delighted to finally see our youth sports teams taking their first sessions on these brand new pitches.

“This project is the largest project ever undertaken by the trust and the work we’ve done with the Council to get to this point has been fantastic. We know that this facility will be a huge benefit to the local and wider community and we’re thrilled to now see it in use.”

Deputy Council Leader Pete Smith said: “It’s absolutely brilliant to see young footballers finally playing on the high quality pitches they deserve. This marks the first stage in delivering what will be the city’s first cricket and football development hub and a massive boost to the area.

“We’re really pleased to be teaming up with the Argyle Community Trust and other partners to provide a facility that will make such a big difference to sports clubs and groups, as well as the local community.”

The Manadon Sports and Community Hub is being funded by the Premier League and the FA Facilities Fund, Sport England and the England and Wales Cricket Board, supported by contributions from the council and the trust, who will take on the site’s lease under a community asset transfer arrangement, along with responsibility for ongoing maintenance and day-to-day operations.

Work to build the new pavilion will get under way shortly – further details will be announced soon.

Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 - and members of the local music scene are doing their best to raise awareness of the problem.

Following the tragic suicides in February of two men connected to the Plymouth art and music scene, local musicians, artists and promoters alike wanted to do something.

Spearheaded by Ben Turner of the Underground on Mutley Plain and Rory Lethbridge, promoter and lead singer of the local band School Disco, the aim is to raise money and awareness of suicide by putting on two days of live music on June 22 and 23.

All proceeds from the event, called the CALM MIND Weekender, will be shared between Mind - Britain’s leading mental health charity - and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

Staggered between the Junction and the Underground, the bands will be coming from as far as Canada to support the fundraiser. More than 20 bands and a number of individual performers will be giving their time to the cause.

Headlining the Junction on Friday night will be Plymouth based American Sign Language and Ontario comedian and songwriter Mishka Shubaly, while over at the Underground, alternative country favourites Paul Armer and The Long Way Down will be signing off the evening.

On Saturday, local grunge giants Radiosaurus will headline at the Junction, with indie psych outfit Tunnel Visions top of the bill across the road at the Underground.

What’s That Noise?

June 16 - July 6 Soapbox Children’s Theatre. 11am and 1.30pm. There is a squeak and a tantalising toot, a crisp crash and a hilarious hoot. Where does it come from? What does it mean? A whispered word and a scrumptious scream!

Listen to the noises that come out of the horn, can you guess from where they were born? The sound collectors are listening and gathering up a cacophony of sounds to put into the sound machine. Fun, visual and interactive, this piece of theatre will be a joy to all the senses.

Not to be missed Gin Festival Plymouth 2018 Jun 29 Plymouth Pavilions The UK’s first, biggest and best gin festival is making it’s first visit to Plymouth and there’s going to be enormous variety of different gins. Plymouth Armed Forces Day 2018 Jun 30 The Hoe Celebrate Plymouth’s proud military tradition at the annual Armed Forces Day, which this year will also be commemorating the RAF’s 100th anniversary. It will showcase the services with static and arena displays and parades. The exciting arena programme will return this year, with a highlight being the Field Gun competitions and the Parade of Standards will see cadets and veterans alike march across the Hoe Promenade.

There will also be military vehicles, equipment and static helicopters on display to see up close as well as the opportunity to meet the Royal Navy, Army, Marines, RAF and veterans’ organisations in a variety of villages set out across the Hoe. There will also be a thrilling air dislay (weather permitting) between 4.15pm and 6.05pm featuring a Spitfire, Catalina, Wingwalkers and aerobatic team displays by Pitts Specials and Calidus Gyro.

The Red Devils - official parachute team of the British Army will end the show - landing in the water in spectacular style.

British Firework Championships Aug 8 - 9 The Hoe The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront in August. Each year, six professional display firework companies are selected by a draw to take part, and despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started in 1997. In addition to the dazzling display of fireworks, there is entertainment on the Hoe including a fun fair with thrill rides, Heart FM providing live music and a number of catering facilities available to stave off any hunger during the show.

Aerobatic spectacular for Armed Forces Day Plymouth Armed Forces Day will feature a stunning air display when it takes place on Plymouth Hoe on Saturday June 30.

Aircraft including a Spitfire XIV, Calidus Gyro and Catalina will take to the skies above Plymouth Sound to entertain spectators, who will also be able to enjoy dramatic aerobatic shows.

The Catalina is a flying boat, with a special historical connection to Plymouth. At least two were based at Mount Batten and flown by the Royal Australian Air Force in the early years of Second World War. Aerobatics team displays will be performed

by Team Raven – a group of five pilots flying an RV4 and RV8s – the Muscle Pitts team biplane and the Fireflies Aerobatic Display Team.

Solo displays will be performed by Mark Jeffries, who placed in the top ten at the last World Aerobatic Championships and Cornish

pilot Corinne Dennis. Corinne will perform a dramatic display in her Pitts Special S-1S G-TWRL, with a combination of rolls and pirouettes, gymnastic manoeuvres and aerial ballet, all highlighted by the trail of white smoke.

Other displays include the Calidus Autogyro – which flies close to the crowd – and the AeroSuperBatics Wingwalkers; fearless wingwalkers who will perform acrobatics on the top wing of a Boeing Stearman biplane.

The Red Devils, the official parachute display team of the British Army, will end the show with a spectacular parachute show, landing in the water. Formed in 1964, the team is made up of 15 men – all full-time serving paratroopers who return to combat duties when required.

Deputy Council Leader Pete Smith said: “Every year, Plymouth Armed Forces Day offers a great day of free family

entertainment, where we can show our support for the armed forces and celebrate our city’s proud military history. This year’s air display is going to be a really spectacular show, with some incredibly talented pilots taking to the skies.”

The air display is due to start at 4.15pm, finishing at 6.05pm. All displays are subject to change and are dependent on the weather.

Three static helicopters are also expected to be stationed on Plymouth Hoe during the day: a Royal Navy Sea King, a Royal Navy Merlin and an RAF Puma (the appearances are subject to operational commitments).

Plymouth Armed Forces Day, in association with Babcock, is an annual celebration of the city’s proud military history. Visitors can enjoy parades, live music and an all-day arena and stage programme.

Future trips have been planned to Mary Newman’s Cottage and Hotel Endsleigh gardens. The Literature group discussed ‘The Seven Sisters’ by Lucinda Riley and came to the view that it was an enjoyable light read, and rather escapist. Next month the group

In June the group have a field trip planned to Wildside Garden, where they will be joined by members of the Garden Visit Group.

The Darts group continues to be a popular meeting each month for lunch and a few friendly games. The History group as usual covered a wide range of topics including Sydney Harbour Bridge, Wooston Castle and Britannia on coins.

Short Walks members enjoyed a walk in the Plym Valley and have future walks planned at Cardinham Woods and along the River Yealm.

Other Moor’s Edge U3A groups include Arty Crafty, Family History, Wine Tasting, Jazz and Music, Singing for Fun, Family History and Play Reading.

At the most recent general meeting Laura Cowie, cyber protection officer for Devon and Cornwall, gave a thought provoking talk. She gave advice on how to protect ourselves from cyber crime such as identity fraud and viruses infecting computers.

New report reveals Plymouth’s got lots of business talent

A new report looking into the strengths of the current UK business landscape has discovered the emerging ‘capitals’ of British business - including Plymouth as a leader in digital enterprises.

The report, published by the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards, has highlighted the new business capitals that offer distinct advantages which help drive success and growth within specific specialist sectors. However, even outside of the five identified areas, there’s still good news right across the UK. Whilst London is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous financial hubs, Plymouth (digital), Birmingham (connectivity), Cardiff (talent), Leeds (affordability), and Brighton (start-ups) are the five main newly identified business capitals.

In 2017, Plymouth launched the STEM Plymouth Strategic Plan, which is designed to drive the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and establish itself as the South West’s leading city in the field.

Professor Kevin Jones, Chair of the STEM Forum, said: “Plymouth’s vision is to become a thriving, innovative international ocean city with science, technology, engineering and maths driving the region’s growth and productivity.”

One year on, more than a third of Plymouthbased respondents (35%) said that the city’s large number of digital businesses are driving growth in the area, and one in five (21%) said that an investment in digital skills such as coding is also a factor.

As well as the areas seeing the most business success, the report also found that two-thirds (66%) of senior business professionals find it easy to attract and retain talent, with larger businesses (701-1000 employees) finding it easiest (73%).

Further, HR (86%) and technology firms (80%) find talent retention the easiest. Businesses reported competitive salaries (47%), affordability (46%) and young people choosing to stay in the area after university (43%) as the best ways to keep top talent.

The report also revealed the most awarded areas of the UK, with award winning businesses reporting a boost in morale (57%), increase in customer trust (51%) and boost for industry recognition (47%).

The Lloyds Bank National Business Awards are now in their 17th year, and are the UK’s most prestigious and independent awards programme.

It recognises and rewards enterprise excellence, innovation and also ethical practice in the UK, across all industry sectors.

Nudge in the right direction!

Believing in the Power to Change may seem like believing in the impossible.

If you popped your head into the former Clipper Pub on Union Street you would witness a stunning work in progress that is making the impossible possible through cheerful volunteering and not being afraid to go where none have been before!

The Plymouth Chronicle found Hannah Sloggett and Lizzie Guest deep in the former men’s urinal wrenching off the fixtures after weeks of work.

“This will become one of our lovely retail units”, explained Wendy Hart, a director of Nudge Community Builders, alongside Hannah.

It does take vision to see how a former, somewhat unpleasant toilet can be transformed in this way, but Nudge are experts in taking the unlovely and turning it around.

“As local residents, we are passionate about Union Street, and about effecting change ourselves, rather than waiting and wishing that someone else would do it” said Wendy.

“We bought the old pub as a Community Benefit Society, with help from the Affordable Housing Loan Facility from Plymouth City Council. The shares will cost as little as £50, can be bought by anyone, or by a group, and will yield a 3.6% return. It is a risk, like any stocks and shares, but investors can guarantee that their money will be part of bringing life back to Union Street one property at a time.

“The plan is to convert the downstairs of the pub into a communal market area where people can try out a business idea with no strings attached.” said Hannah.

sell in our space, perhaps just on a pay as you go basis, or on a short-term lease. The building will be transformed into a hub with a café/bar and a lovely quirky outdoor space that will back onto the proposed Boulevard running from Millbay.

“Someone could even run the café on a taste it and see basis to see if they could make a business out of their hospitality idea.

“Even if used as a cut through, it will be an exciting, vibrant inside/outside space full of creativity and invention – food, flowers and feel good.

“We hope to open the down stairs shortly and will start renovating the upstairs, so we can let two flats out to local people in need.

“The investment for shareholders will grow as we renovate the property, increasing its market value, and from the rental income of the flats and business units.

“All profits can only be used for the purposes of the organisation, which is to bring back derelict buildings in Stonehouse into use in fun and surprising ways.”

It’s such a simple yet revolutionary idea.

The ideas started at the very first Union Street Party 10 years ago; developed with Union Corner being brought back to use; and the same people are developing them now, one nudge at a time to transform the Street forever. It will take patience,

but it will be ethical, and regeneration will happen – all thanks to the community itself and its supporters.

The laptop was stolen from a vehicle outside her family home and the theft received nationwide attention after dad Paul wrote about it on Twitter.

The original tweet was shared more than 65,000 times and celebrities including Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer and Andy Murray subsequently joined a fundraising campaign set up by member of the public Jamie Twite to raise money for a replacement device.

The stolen Accent 1400 device, which Miya relied on to communicate with friends and family, was discovered at Plymouth Cash Converters on Saturday 5 May, by store supervisor Shane Lowe.

Following a series of swift and strict security checks, Shane realised that the device in front

of him once belonged to Miya and alerted local police and arrests followed.

The laptop was returned to Miya’s family on Bank Holiday Monday much to the delight of Miya who had missed the familiar technology of the machine that had been personally adapted for her needs.

Miya’s father, Paul said: “We are hugely grateful to Cash Converters for alerting the police and for recognising that the laptop was an invaluable, specialist voice converter device. This particular model is the one Miya finds easiest to use so we are really very relieved. Miya’s mum is about to give birth any day so we have two very special deliveries for the family!

Miya re-united with stolen voice machine The father of 16-year-old disabled teenager has spoken of his family’s joy after she was reunited with her stolen voice machine thanks to Cash Converters.

The theft triggered a nationwide appeal four months ago - but it was not until May 5 that the culprits were arrested.

Speaking following the arrest of two men in connection with the theft, Paul Johnson of Pennycross, has revealed that the family never dreamed the specialist voice-generating laptop worth £6000 would ever be returned.

However, Plymouth Police have made two arrests and have returned the stolen voice machine to Miya, who is now able to use the machine which

The replacement voice machine will be returned and the funds will go to updating Miya’s machine and a donation will be made to the Little Harbour Children’s Hospice in Saint Austell where Miya has received specialist care.

Mr Johnson added: “Miya uses the hospice services at times and this money will be of tremendous help. They do incredible work with the kids.”

Mike Stevenson, the operations director at Plymouth Cash Converters, commented: “Shane had an eagle eye and was quick-thinking. All our team is highly trained to spot anything that might be amiss when an item comes in. We have a great relationship with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and work with them closely in cases like this.

Princess Royal opens life-changing research facility Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal has officially opened the University of Plymouth’s multi-million pound Derriford Research Facility, the new headquarters of its flagship Institute of Translational and Stratified Medicine.

From brain tumours to vaccines, tissue regeneration to hepatitis, antibiotic resistance to innovative new cancer drugs, the state-of-the-art centre brings together all of the University’s lab-based medical, biomedical and dental research to focus on the development of new therapeutics, diagnostics, interventions and approaches to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases, enhance patient outcomes and improve global healthcare.

Research into the three core themes of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and infection, inflammation and immunity is facilitated by cross-cutting expertise in diagnostics, clinical trials and public health research across the following lifechanging areas: brain tumours; non-Hodgkin lymphoma; dementia, Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease; antibiotic resistance and the development of new antibiotics; innovative self-disseminating vaccines for Ebola and bovine TB; hepatitis and tissue regeneration.

Located adjacent to the University’s Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry at Plymouth Science Park, and next to Derriford Hospital, the facility allows greater collaboration between medical, dental and biomedical researchers at the University, as well as with research clinicians from University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

The 2,300 square metre building also houses up-to-date stock management for equipment and other supplies, specialist services such as the University’s Systems Biology Centre, and a new STEM teaching area as well as the refurbishment of existing laboratory, research and teaching space.

Her Royal Highness was escorted on a tour of the facilities where she was introduced to some of the life-changing research taking place, before officially unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion in front of an invited audience.

The quality of health research at the University is nationally recognised. The Research Excellence Framework 2014 ranked the institution top in the UK for the quality of its research outputs in Clinical Medicine.

It is one of the lead academic partners in the Alzheimer’s Research UK South West Research Network, and one of only four Research Centres of Excellence for charity Brain Tumour Research.

It is hoped that the Derriford Research Facility will build on these strengths with the potential to attract more of the greatest minds in medicine to Plymouth, and put the city and region on the international map in addressing global health issues.

Healthier food served up for Plymouth people with diabetes

More people in Plymouth will enjoy healthier food on their plates, thanks to the Connected Communities Innovation Fund.

People living with diabetes will get an extra healthy helping hand as part of the Plymouth’s Grow, Share, Cook ‘Diabeaters’ project.

The scheme uses volunteers to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, develop community gardens and distribute food, as well as hold healthy cookery sessions.

As part of the Cities of Service Network, Plymouth will share a slice of a £235,425 grant and

will use it to help people living with diabetes eat more healthily and cook with confidence.

Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Co-operative Development said: “We want to get more volunteers to grow fresh fruit and veg as well as deliver their produce to people who have diabetes.

“We are looking at helping 50 or so households who have someone living with the condition and our initial evidence shows that diabetes sufferers who have healthier food and better eating habits don’t need to visit their doctors so much. It’s a

small intervention that can have big long term benefits, for those with the condition, for the health system, for the city.

“I’m really pleased that our existing Cities of Service Grow, Share, Cook project is being supported to be more successful, to bring along more volunteers to help more people in need.”

Partners in Grow, Share, Cook include Tamar Grow Local, Food Is Fun, and Plymouth Community Homes.

Plymouth is part of the Cities of Service Network, which also includes Bristol City Council, City of York Council and Barnsley Council. The network

is one of 16 organisations selected to take part in Connected Communities Innovation Fund.

The fund is a partnership between Nesta and the Office for Civil Society at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), providing up to £2.7 million in grants, as well as significant non-financial support, to the best innovations that mobilise people’s time and talents.

It is designed to encourage more people to volunteer alongside public services, and inspire new ways of giving for those who haven’t previously volunteered.

Lola’s first hair cut raises over £750 for charity Seven year old Lola decided to get her hair cut for the first time and in doing so, wanted to raise some money for the children’s wards at Derriford Hospital.

After watching a TV programme about children with cancer, and how they often lose their hair during chemotherapy treatment, Lola decided she would help.

Having her long hair cut short, she donated it to the Little Princess Trust, who provide real-hair wigs to children and young people who have unfortunately lost their own hair due to having cancer treatment and other illnesses.

Not only that, but Lola also asked friends and family to sponsor her, raising a grand total of £761 for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund.

The fund is a registered charity that aims to make a difference for all young patients who stay or receive treatment at Derriford Hospital, as well as their families and carers.

Sue Rodgers, fundraising co-ordinator for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund and Play Service Team Leader at Derriford Hospital, said: “What a brilliant young lady. It’s really inspiring that she not only wanted to do something for children who are dealing with such a serious condition, by donating her hair to make wigs, but also wanting to help her local children’s wards where young cancer patients receive treatment.

“We’d like to say thank you so much to Lola. We are so impressed with your thoughtfulness, and your new hairstyle looks beautiful.”

Funding secured for new mental health facility at Derriford

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is to receive part of a £15 million government fund to support patients experiencing mental health crises.

The Department of Health and Social Care has announced that University Hospitals Plymouth had been successful in a bid for capital funding, in order to build a new facility for mental health patients.

The £300,000 award will fund both the provision of a bespoke waiting area for patients experiencing a mental health crisis, as well as two mental health assessment rooms. The facility will be co-located with the Emergency Department at Derriford Hospital.

“At the moment, the mental health assessment waiting area for medically fit, ambulatory patients is within the Clinical Decisions Unit, part of the Emergency Department,” explained Kevin Baber, chief operating officer for University Hospitals Plymouth. “This area is shared by patients awaiting diagnostic results, discharge or transfer arrangements. Understandably, both patients and staff have raised concerns, as sharing this facility can elevate patients’ distress.

“Providing a separate, dedicated waiting area will enable the needs of people in mental health crisis to be met much more appropriately and sensitively. We hope it will provide a safe, private and calming environment, which will support the delivery of care.”

Increasing the number of mental health assessment rooms available will improve the time patients experiencing mental health crisis need to wait for their assessment.

“As the demand for urgent mental health assessments increases, so does the requirement for additional space to deliver this service,” adds Kevin. “With the additional rooms, the Liaison Psychiatry team will be able to see more than one patient simultaneously. Response times will be improved and so will patient safety.

“Through establishing this facility, and working with Livewell Southwest, Devon Partnership Trust NEW Devon CCG and others, we hope to deliver a more integrated service for our patients.”

It is hoped that the new facility will be in place in Spring 2019.

Head of Nursing (Cancer and End of Life) Sian Dennison has been nominated for the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards, which recognise the massive contribution made by

the individuals who work in and alongside the NHS. Described by her colleagues as ‘the voice for cancer services and cancer patients’,

Sian has been recognised for her devotion to improving cancer care at every stage.

Sian has facilitated the introduction of several cancer patient support groups and has supported and encouraged these groups to develop through delivering effective leadership to her team.

Sian has also introduced end of life rooms to Derriford hospital. End of life rooms are

a peaceful place for patients when it is not possible for them to be at home or in a local hospice. They are less clinical and provide a more comfortable, peaceful atmosphere for terminally ill patients and their relatives.

“I have been a cancer nurse for over 30 years and I am absolutely delighted to have been nominated for this award,” said Sian.

“To me, this award is about the team I work with. I couldn’t have achieved all that has been delivered without their passion, dedication and their support to improve patient care and make a difference.”

Chief executive of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Ann James, said: “I am absolutely delighted for Sian. She is an inspiring leader who embodies a positive, caring and progressive culture with her team of Cancer Nurse Specialists.

“Sian is absolutely the voice for cancer services and cancer patients in the region and is incredibly deserving of this recognition.”

Nominations for the awards were put forward by Johnny Mercer MP, Gary Streeter MP and Luke Pollard MP. Penny Smith, director of Nursing & Quality at NHS England South West said: “These awards are a fantastic showcase on how the Five Year Forward View is being put into action in the South West. This award is all about recognising those who are going above and beyond to improve treatment and outcomes for patients, as well as those who are supporting patients with the personalised care and support they need.

It is great to see that Sian is making such a positive impact.”

Sian has been invited to a special awards ceremony, to be held in Parliament on July 4, the day before the NHS’s 70th birthday, where the winners will be announced.

Colour up your patio or front door this summer, with these beautiful and striking pot and plant recipes that we’ve created.

We frequently get asked a lot by our customers about which plants to grow together in pots and what colours go well together. It’s a difficult question to answer, as it’s subjective and down to personal taste, but as a general rule of thumb I always suggest using colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, for a blending, colour coordinated display.

For example, pinks, purples and whites always look great together, while reds, oranges, and yellows always work well. For a more contrasting look, colours opposite each other on the colour wheel, complement each other. For example, oranges and purples bring out the best in each other, as do yellows and blues and reds and greens. Just follow these simple recipes, for a fantastic display all summer long.

These pink bowls are the perfect way to decorate your patio for those midsummer cocktail parties. The large bowls contains Scabious Pink mist, Oxalis Red Leaf, a pink Osteospermum and a Pink Calibrachoa. The medium sized bowl is planted up with a pink Geranium, a purple Verbena, and a pink Surfinia. The small bowl is planted up with a dark Purple Osteospermum. These colours complement each other and work well as a theme. The dark purple leaf colour is picked up beautifully by the dark purple of the calibrachoa.

Lime Margarita

These lime green bowls are zingy, fresh and vibrant. They will brighten up any areas. The large bowl contains a yellow Abutilon, Heuchera Bright and Breezy, Oxalis Burgundy, Bidens and a yellow Calibrachoa. The medium pot contains Hosta Wide Brim, Lysimachia Aurea and Bidens. The smallest bowl is planted up with a yellow trailing Begonia and Lysimachia Outback Sunset. These bowls are the perfect size and shape for growing Hostas in. They are raised off of the floor, so are less likely to be munched by slugs and snails. For added protection, a strip of copper tape can be applied just under the rim of the pot.

These brightly coloured stripy pots are a fun addition

to any patio or balcony. The colours will brighten up any dull space, transforming it and giving it a sun kissed Mediterranean feel. The large pot contains Geum Flames of Passion, Nemesia Pomelo, Calibrachoa Mango, Mimulus and a yellow Calibrachoa. The medium pot is planted up with an Orange Osteospermum, Begonia Bonfire, Begonia Papaya and Mimulus. The small pot has been potted up with Fuchsia Koralle, Begonia Apricot and Mimulus. These warm sunny colours are sure to brighten up any space even if the sun doesn’t.

Scented Terracotta Cubes (above)

For an authentic Italian feel, you can’t beat terracotta pots planted with sun loving aromatic plants. All the plants planted in these pots are sun lovers, and will love baking in your, warmest, sunniest spot. In the largest cube, there is a Trachelospermum Jasminoides climbing up an obelisk, under planted with scented Dianthus and trailing Phlox. The medium terracotta pot is planted up with French Lavender and some trailing Pelargoniums.

The smallest terracotta pot contains a scented leaf Geranium and a trailing Pelargonium. Not only can you enjoy the beautiful flowers and scents, but the pollinating insects will love them too.

Patriotic Pots

With the recent Royal Wedding and the upcoming World Cup, plant up a few pots for your front door in patriotic red, white and blue. We have chosen a blue glazed Heritage pot and planted it with a blue Platycodon, red and white Dianthus and blue and white Calibrachoa.

All of these recipes were planted using tub and basket compost, and had slow release fertiliser added to the compost for a prolonged display. Deadhead them regularly and they will continue to flower into early autumn.

WASHING MACHINE XWSC61251W A remarkable collaboration between an award-winning artist and a young man with Aspergers Syndrome has led to the publication of an inspiring new book.

Steven Dodd, who lives in Crownhill, was diagnosed with Aspergers at the age of 24 and with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder shortly after.

Despite this, Steven’s determination has seen him win medals at the World Games, raise thousands of pounds for charity and visit Kosova on several occasions to help rebuild the war damaged homes of widows.

He is driven by a passion to achieve and help others to do the same.

A chance meeting at the beginning of 2016 provided Steven with the opportunity to fulfil this ambition.

While attending a fund-raising event for a cancer charity Steven met Lester Jones, who is the events organiser for Plymouth and Cornwall Cancer Fund.

Lester, an award-winning artist, designer and musician, draws his inspiration from his volunteer work supporting cancer patients and encouraging people of all ages to ‘give it a go.’

Steven’s enthusiasm and determination impressed Lester and the pair worked on a host of fund raising events in the months that followed.

Last year Steven asked Lester if he could write his life story to inspire others to achieve.

Lester, who lives in Lipson, said: “I told Steven that I didn’t think I was skilled enough to write a biography, but in the past I had worked as a designer with Lego creating different characters.

“Steven is a fan of superheroes and we decided that his story could be told through an illustrated children’s book featuring superheroes.”

Lester then spent nearly a year writing the story and creating illustrations of more than 20 animal characters - many of them based on Steven’s family and friends.

Owls are Steven’s favourite animals, so not surprisingly the main character is called SuperOwl. He is the hero of the new 100-page book written and illustrated by Lester called ‘SuperOwl - Being Different Makes You Super.’

Lester said: “Being different makes you super is a slogan to help and encourage children and young people with Aspergers

Syndrome, autism or any form of disability to enjoy their lives and show that with support from their friends and family they can achieve great things.”

The book was launched in May and is available online at Amazon and Kindle and also at Waterstones and other major book stores. It has a cover price of £6.99.

Steven and Lester will be doing a book signing at Waterstones in Plymouth on June 2 and also visiting schools and local libraries to spread the positive message in the book.

When he is not promoting the book Steven is busy training for the World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi in March next year. Having previously won silver medals in kayaking, Steven has now been selected to join Team GB as a powerlifter.

Steven said: “I could not continue with kayaking because my coach sadly died of cancer. It was a huge shock for me, but for the last two years I have been training as a powerlifter. I am very proud of my achievements and would love to come home with another medal.” With Steven’s determination and commitment that is certainly a strong possibility!

Clarion call from Clarion Choir!

Three local athletes chosen for Team UK at Invictus Games Three former military personnel from Plymouth and Torpoint have been selected to represent the UK at the Invictus Games in Australia in October.

Plymouth’s Nick Martin and Mark Ormrod will join Deborah Godfrey from Torpoint in the 72-strong team, of wounded, injured and sick (WIS) serving military personnel and veterans.

Details of the competitors selected for Team UK were announced at a special ceremony at Horse Guards Parade in London. The UK delegation to the Invictus Games in Sydney is being delivered by a partnership of the Ministry of Defence, Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion.

The team will compete in 11 sports: athletics; archery; wheelchair basketball; cycling; powerlifting; indoor rowing; wheelchair rugby; swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair tennis and a new sport for 2018, sailing.

They will continue to train from now until October in various locations across the country as part of Help for Heroes’ extensive Sports Recovery programme and role to train and develop the team.

Former Leading hand Nick Martin served in the Royal Navy until 1986. Having watched the past two Invictus Games, the 61-year-old from

Plymouth felt inspired to take part: “I realised that I want to challenge myself, not as a punishment this time but as a celebration. The self-abuse that I carried out over the years needed to stop.

“I am now fully committed to a recovery programme to help me move forward. I’ve allowed my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to control the way that I have seen and led my life over many years. I now see life as a blessing not a burden. I’ve changed things. I try new things. It isn’t easy to get out of the rut but I’m peering over the parapet. I am ready to live a productive, healthy life again!”

Former Royal Marine Commando Mark Ormrod was injured in 2007 when he stepped on an IED. The 34-year-old was medically discharged and found solace in the 2017 Invictus Games. This year, he hopes to build on his achievements in Toronto.

“Last year was not only my first time participating at the Games, but it was my first time trying any adaptive sport at all since my injuries. It had a huge impact on my recovery and my life. Because of this

sport is now a regular part of my life and I really want to build on last year, better my performance and push myself as far as I can.

“I want to feel like I have 100% dominated my injuries. I am building on the improvement of my mental health through sport too, encouraging as many other veterans as possible to take up some form of sport as therapy.”

Former Master-at-arms Debbie Godfrey, served in the Royal Navy until she was medically discharged in 2006: “I was sad that I had served for 20 years and I didn’t want to be medically discharged with only two years left to serve. It hit me hard.

The 49-year-old from Torpoint credits sport and the Invictus Games as being a tremendous help towards her ongoing recovery: “My mental health has already started to improve, and my physical health will too.

City College Plymouth students have been learning the tricks of the trade from local businessman and entrepreneur Trevor Worth.

Trevor was approached by business student Edward Nettleship who arranged the talk for his fellow students to gain advice and guidance on the next steps in their careers.

Edward said: “I chose to approach Trevor because he is passionate about business and entrepreneurial spirit.

I admire how committed he is to helping others and his ambition to mentor the next generation of business people.

Trevor talked with real enthusiasm about his company and how he has become the businessman he is today.

He gave us some great advice and answered all of our questions, which meant that we all left full of inspiration.

His presentation really drove home that we should all have passion about what we do and work hard to meet our goals.”

Trevor Worth, who set-up his thriving law firm Portcullis Legals - single-handily in 1988 came to the college to talk about his own career and advise the students on how to make it in the industry.

He said: “As a former City College student I wanted to give back to the place where I found my passion for business and pass on a few pearls of wisdom to the next generation of business people and leaders. I feel it is

Plymouth charity’s appeal for donations to help refugees

A Plymouth charity is urgently appealing for donations to fill a humanitarian container of aid to be shipped to Greece.

In October 2015 in response to the refugee crisis Open Hearts Open Borders Refugee Aid (OHOB) was launched, and now two and a half years later the community grass roots organisation is once again asking for urgent donations for the container of humanitarian aid, which is once again being sent to the camps in Lesvos Greece.

The container is due to leave Saltash at the end of June, and the volunteers are appealing for donations of specific but essential aid items to fill the shipment.

Despite less media attention, boats arrive daily onto the islands in Greece, and the situation in the camps is still fraught with difficulties and at crisis point. Camps are overcrowded and conditions are unsafe.

There are currently 13,000 men, women and children stuck on the Greek Islands, according to figures sourced from Amnesty International.

Many of those stuck on the islands have fled war-torn countries and arrive on the islands with nothing.

Aid supplies are running low with the continual arrivals and essential items are urgently required once again for the summer months.

Faraday Fearnside, founder and director of Open Hearts Open Borders said: “People are living in dire conditions on the islands and it is easy to feel helpless when you see the images.

“We may not be able to stop the conflict, but we can provide what is needed to those stuck in the camps. I believe the time has come for solutions: the refugee crisis has reached a point where if we can all work together to create the change needed we can do so much more and we can then think differently about what is happening.”

Requests received from Greece are asking for more consumable items such as washing up liquid, washing

detergent, towels, nappies, wet wipes, male and female toiletries, mosquito repellent, dried and tinned vegetarian and dried food items.

Further essential items needed are blankets and sleeping bags, new socks and underwear for men, women and children and for the summer months short and long sleeved t-shirts, women’s summer scarves, light trousers and skirts and new flip flops and crocs.

“If we can give some of the refugees on the island a small piece of comfort, we are saying....we are here and willing to help in whatever way we can.”

FARADAY FEARNSIDE Faraday added: “Needs are constantly changing and items now required are really what we all need on a day to day basis; families are living in tents just like we live in our homes here in the UK, so the daily needs are just like ours.

“If we can give some of the refugees on the island a small piece of comfort, we are saying that the world has not turned their back on those in the refugee camps; we are saying we are here and willing to help in whatever way we can.”

In 2017, Open Hearts Open Borders (OHOB) raised over £20,000, which was used to collect and ship aid, purchase aid items and support resettlement in the South West. As a voluntary organisation all donations and funding goes back into the organisation to achieve its aims.

OHOB currently collect and ship aid for families and individuals in France and Greece on a regular basis.

Here in the UK they provide support with resettlement by sourcing or purchasing furniture items, clothing and baby items for refugees who are

granted status and find safety in the South West.

OHOB also support local and regional projects and have collected and provided sleeping bags and clothing for the homeless and given tinned and dried food items to Foodbanks in Devon and Cornwall. As well as collecting for the container aid, a shipment of pallets has just been sent to Greece, and at the end of June a van will be going over to France to deliver items to Dunkirk and Calais.

OHOB started as a small community Facebook group with 500 members and has organically grown into a not for profit charitable organisation with over 2,280 supporters all working together for change. The goal for 2018 is to raise even more, so that aid shipments and support with resettlement items and furniture can continue.

Faraday said: “The time and unconditional love given by the community and our volunteers in everything we do ensures we can continue sending aid to Europe or support local projects.

“OHOB is about what we can give back to the world and to those who have suffered as a consequence of circumstance. It was built on the foundation of unconditional giving, which is such a simple premise; kindness costs nothing.”

On May 26 and June 2 from 11am to 2pm volunteers will be at QStore Business Centre, Moorlands Trading Estate in Saltah if anyone would like to drop off any items listed.

Cookery is a real mouthful for language students Language skills are something we can always improve and develop, and students from City College Plymouth have been doing just this through a series of hands-on courses.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students have been combining cookery and conversation to improve their English.

Aromatic smells wafted from the kitchen, causing mouths to water and bellies to rumble, as the ESOL students whipped up a Thai green curry on the last day of the course.

They were helped by City College’s chef lecturer, Richard Farleigh, who said: “Here at the college we have a large number of students for whom English is a second language and we wanted to design a fun and interesting way to help them improve their

communication skills. Combining language with an activity, like cooking, has been proven to be a very effective way to learn; so we created a programme to feed both their minds and stomachs.

“This course has been a great success and I have really enjoyed teaching them. Over just a few weeks I have noticed an improvement and I’m hoping they will leave us hungry to continue improving their language and cooking skills.”

Covering everything from developing knife skills to cooking on a budget, the course culminated in an exam where the students had to create three healthy meals from a long list of ingredients.

Award winning project is seeking interns for September An award winning project that supports young adults with learning disabilities to find and keep paid employment is seeking interns for its next course, starting in September 2018.

Project SEARCH is a partnership between University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Pluss, Serco and City College Plymouth who create employment opportunities for young adults with learning disabilities.

Together, they provide supported work based experiences in Derriford Hospital, where the interns learn the skills that all employers need, together with specific skills for individual jobs.

The scheme supports young adults, aged between 18 and 24, with learning disabilities who live in Plymouth.

The interns experience three supported internships within Derriford Hospital and complete a Level 1 academic course.

In its first seven years, 74% of the project’s interns have gone on to achieve competitive paid employment.

Project SEARCH Intern, Henry Flavell, who gained employment as a porter for Serco

within Derriford Hospital, said: “I really enjoyed working with Serco. Now it has become a paid job I’ll be able to carry on working in a great team.

“Having paid work means I can save and it will make me more independent.”

Henry’s mother commented: “It’s been phenomenal, his confidence has come on, what would we do without you all?”

Building bridges to STEM careers Teams of Plymouth school children were keeping everyone in ‘suspense’ as they competed against the clock to construct a 12-metre-long suspension bridge.

Over 90 pupils from across the city took part in the ‘Bridges to Schools’ project held at City College Plymouth. Schools involved included Stoke Damerel Community College and Eggbuckland Community College.

The young people had to work together to build a structurally stable cable-stayed bridge in under an hour.

Students were challenged to design, create, solve and innovate to successfully complete the task. Louise Daniel from the Institution of Civil Engineers said: “This project is more than simply learning about bridges and engineering, it helps students to experience and appreciate the many industry roles found in civil engineering - from project managers to fixers.

“Workshops like these highlight the importance of working as a team; it shows how to take on responsibility and enables students to understand the importance of seeing a project through to its final outcome. It has been fantastic to work with City College Plymouth to engage young people and encourage an interest in civil engineering.”

Andy Robinson, STEM hub officer at City College said: “This event has been a great success, with all of the groups completing the bridge and working effectively in teams. As a STEM professional, it is great to involve young people in: learning about the science behind the materials, working out the

maths by counting, calculating, and estimating; the use of technology in the planning; and, obviously, engineering.

“At the college, we are dedicated to engaging with the local community and always strive to inspire and encourage our future workforce.

‘Bridges to Schools’ is yet another excellent example of the positive activity that we can undertake to inspire and educate the next generation of STEM experts.”

Devonport Park Fest will take place on June 11 in Devonport Park.

The Bandstand will come alive with the sound of music at 11am with the Montpelier Primary School Steel Pan, the Plymouth Youth Concert Band, the sensational La La Choir, the One Night Stans, Memory Lane, a country and western band, Talitha, Sophie-Louise, Ryan and a reggae band. At 5pm the music will move to the café area with soft lounge music.

A variety of stalls, bouncy castle and face painter should keep both children and adults amused.

This event will be in aid of Children’s Hospice South West, so go along and have a great day out while supporting this important charity.

Exhibition celebrates 70 years of NHS in city

An exhibition celebrating the NHS in Plymouth is continuing at Ford Park Cemetery.

‘Celebrating 70 Years of the NHS in Plymouth’ takes a look at how Plymothians embraced the start of the NHS and the city’s hospitals - both old and new. The exhibition runs until Sunday July 8 and is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Refreshments are available to purchase from the Visitor Centre cafe during these times.

Meanwhile between June 4 and June 8 volunteers from Ford Park will be manning the coffee bar at Harewood House in Plympton. Locals are invited to go along and say hello, have a cup and sample some the volunteers delicious home made cakes.

The ESF is the European Union’s main financial instrument for supporting the creation of more jobs in the EU and was awarded to City College, working in collaboration with the University of Plymouth, Plymouth College of Art, Bridgwater and Taunton College, Petroc College, South Devon College, Strode College, Exeter University and Yeovil College.

The projects will run until April 2020 and focus on creating higher and degree apprenticeships to help meet the identified skills gaps.

City artists form new collective - and they want more to join A group of four Plymouth artists, Rosie Cunningham, Sheron King, Grant Wallace and Jillian Morris have come together to form Plymouth Artists Collective - and they are hoping more artists will join them.

They are staging their first collective exhibition at the Cells Gallery in Devonport Guildhall in June.

The exhibition runs from Tuesday June 12 to Saturday June 23 and will showcase paintings, textiles, ceramics and jewellery. All the work displayed together with cards and gifts will be available to purchase.

The exhibition is open daily from Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and will be attended by one of the artists on each of the days.

The Plymouth Artists Collective is the brainchild of Rosie Cunningham who wanted to provide a platform for Plymouth artists to exhibit their work, network, open their studios as a collective event and share ideas and contacts.

Rosie said: “We are a group of four at present but I hope that others will join when they see the benefits of forming a bespoke Plymouth Collective.

The exhibition in the Cells at Devonport Guildhall is our inaugural event and the meet the artists event on the June 15 is designed to both sell our art and encourage other artists to join us.

“By putting on collective events we aim to promote a diverse range of arts for all tastes.”

Jillian Morris is a textiles artist whose work is inspired by the moors, seas and gardens.

Most of her work is hand woven or mixed media textiles, sometimes using hand-dyed threads, and introducing techniques such as stitch and coiling. She makes a variety of items, from the more traditional woven scarves and wall hangings, to woven and embellished vessels, and small woven tapestries.

Designer maker, Sheron King specialises in creating beautiful one off pieces and small collections using upcycled textiles, mixed media and ceramics.

Wanted: Young star for Miss Saigon Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of legendary musical Miss Saigon is looking for boys or girls to play the role of ‘Tam’ when the show runs at Theatre Royal Plymouth in July and August.

‘Tam’ is small, cute, confident and South East Asian looking.

He is not younger than four and not older than six. Children must live within a commutable distance of Plymouth. The show runs from July 4 to August 4.

This new production of Miss Saigon opened in London in May 2014 to record-breaking advance sales and critical acclaim. The show swept the board at the 2015 Whatsonstage.com awards winning a record breaking nine awards, the most awards ever won by a single show in the 15-year history of the awards including: Best West End Show and Best Revival of a Musical.

Miss Saigon tells the story of young bar girl named Kim, orphaned by war, who falls in love with Chris, an American GI but their lives are torn apart by the fall of Saigon.

Clog dancing Thursdays A fun way to exercise! The Plymouth Maids clog dancers are a small, friendly group of women who welcome new members. From the beginning of October to the end of April we practice at St Bartholomew’s Church Hall, opposite the Life Centre, on Thursdays 8 - 9.45pm.

Respect Festival returns in July The popular Plymouth Respect Festival returns to the city on Saturday July 14.

After a two year break, Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council (PDREC), with support from other organisations, has decided to bring back one of Plymouth’s best loved festivals.

Since the first festival 20 years ago, the event continued to develop each year and this year it will return to its home roots at Plymouth Guildhall.

The free event will showcase Plymouth’s diversity with a variety of performers, food, street parades and interactive information stands.

Julie Paget, PDREC manager said: “We are delighted that Plymouth Respect Festival is returning this year, especially as the festival coincides with our 25th anniversary.

“The festival is an excellent opportunity for the city to come together and promote the intrinsic message of respect and equality for all.”

Sergeant Graham Little, diverse communities team leader, commented: “It is great that the festival is returning to Plymouth. It is an amazing event which encourages engagement between the police, diverse communities and Plymouth citizens.

Pensioners & Fifty Plus Action Group If you are more than fifty years old and live in the Plymouth area we invite you to come to our regular meetings and meet some new friends. On the second Friday of each month we have free meetings and invite MPs, local councillors, local businesses, anyone able to speak on issues that affect older people, to come and talk to us. These meetings are held in the Wolseley Trust Community Building (next to Sheila’s Café in Wolseley Road), behind the Co-op just down from Milehouse traffic lights going towards St Budeaux.

These meetings start 10.30am and end at 1pm, many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car parking is usually available. We also have regular social meetings and would like to advise everyone that these will now be held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth (PL2 2EL) just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. The No 13 Target Travel bus stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single £20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). City WALK IT! raises £11,000 Well over 200 people took part in the WALK IT! event in Plymouth to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK. The event was a huge success with 50 people signing up on the day, bringing the total number of walkers to 230.

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth Coun Nick Kelly, cut the tape for official start of the walk - and then completed it with Helen, his consort.

Walkers started off at The hoe and took on either the 10k or 5k route around the city. A total of £11000 was raised at the event.

Spar-a-thon boost for children’s ward fund The children’s wards at Derriford Hospital have received a donation of nearly £2000, following a fundraising event held by a local gym.

For the last three years, Russell’s Muay Thai, a family-run gym and boxing training facility based in Austin Farm, have held a yearly fundraising event to raise money for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund.

The Fund is a registered charity that aims to make a difference for all young patients who stay or receive treatment at Derriford Hospital, as well as their families and carers.

This year, the gym held a 36 hour boxing spar-a-thon and as a result, raised a whopping £1902, beating their previous fundraising totals.

Hospital staff nominated for NHS awards Four representatives from University Hospitals Plymouth have been nominated in the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards. The nominations were put forward by local MPs, including Plymouth MP Johnny Mercer.

The NHS70 Parliamentary Awards, sponsored by IBM, was set up to recognise the massive contribution made by the individuals who work in and alongside the NHS. MPs in England were called on to put forward outstanding nominees who have innovated, impressed and made a real difference to how local health and care services provide care for patients.

The following are now the official nominees representing Plymouth constituency in the national competition: The Excellence in Cancer Care Award: Sian Dennison; the Person-Centred Care Champion Award: Plymouth Immunology Team; the Care and Compassion Award: Jamie Read; the Lifetime Achievement Award: Joe Rahamim.

Johnny Mercer, who presented the nominees with their official nomination certificates, said: “Everyone in Plymouth is rightly proud of our local NHS and care services, and I’m delighted to be taking part in the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards as a way of thanking and recognising the people who work in or support those services.

“As well as getting behind our nominees for these awards, I hope local people will take the opportunity to mark the NHS’s 70th

Nominees put forward by MPs across England will initially be judged by senior local and regional NHS experts to find

regional champions in each category, which will be announced later in May. These regional champions will then be judged by a high-level panel, with the overall winners announced at a special awards ceremony in Parliament on Wednesday July 4 – the day before the NHS’s 70th birthday.

The NHS70 Parliamentary Awards is part of a range of activities being organised

nationally and locally to mark the achievements of the NHS and those who work for and with it. At University Hospitals, these include creating a digital archive of photos, videos and stories about the NHS – past, present and future and an NHS70 Open Day on Saturday 16 June 2018.

Trio honoured as part of International Nurses Day A nurse specialising in cancer treatment and a midwife were both honoured as part of International Nurses Day, which marked the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

Maria Lawson, who has worked as the lead colorectal cancer nurse specialist at Derriford since 2009, was awarded the Nurse of the Year title, while Amanda Newbold was named Midwife of the Year.

Maria’s colleague Nicola Bevan-French said: “Maria always ensures she’s looking at something from the patient’s point of view and considering what’s in their best interest.

Her capacity for caring for the patients and the way she delivers care gives patients and families a great deal of comfort, even when the news is not good.

“One example of this is her work with a bowel cancer patient. He had reviewed the Cancer Patient Experience Survey and met with Maria to give his view on the findings.

“Maria explained the reasoning behind some of the results. The patient wanted to write to Ann James and Maria encouraged this – he was by this point palliative and Maria knew how much it would mean to him to know his vision for improvements was being listened to.

“Ann received the letter and Maria met with her to ask if she would meet with the patient. Ann agreed and also requested that the patient come to give his story at the Board meeting. Sadly he passed away before he could do this, so Maria spoke for him at the meeting. He would have been very proud of her.

I’ve been working with Maria for just over a year and have formed a deep respect for her and the way she carries out her nursing role. I know how many nurses work long hours to go above and beyond and this is certainly true of Maria.

“Maria is never afraid to speak up in support of patients - we need more nurses like her.”

nominations for nurse, midwife and care assistant of the year, which is absolutely brilliant. But Maria’s clearly stood out.”

Maria added: “I’m totally overwhelmed. But I know how everyone here puts patients first, too. Thank you so much.”

Amanda Newbold has worked as a midwife with the Jubilee Team, who support women to give birth at home, since 2011. Her colleagues are very quick to point out how kind and supportive Amanda is.

“Amanda’s patients think the world of her, and are very grateful for her kindness and professionalism,” said Anne-Marie Dalton.

“Her calm nature is very reassuring to women in labour, and she’s very competent in conducting home deliveries.

“Amanda always has a smile,” added Cheryl Cole. “She will always put patients first, even if it means going home late, and she will always help you out. She can also always be relied on to bring cookies to meetings!”

Anna Dodd, Midwifery Team Lead, said: “Amanda is an outstanding midwife, entirely sound in practice and totally committed to the welfare of our women. She delivers the highest quality of care to all the ladies she comes into contact with, but not only that, she fully appreciates and understands the ‘wider picture’ of what is required to help our maternity unit run efficiently and safely.

“To see Amanda come on shift just brings a smile! Her skill, experience and reliability is very much appreciated. Amanda gets on with the job in hand no matter how trying the situation or circumstances. Thank you Amanda, you are greatly valued!”

Aimee Adams seconded this: “I think Amanda embodies traditional midwifery.

She is a brilliant team player, organised and always willing to pitch in.”

Sue Wilkins, Head of Midwifery, who presented the awards along with Greg Dix, said: “We can’t over-empathise how difficult it was to choose each winner. There were so many nominations in each category; it could have gone to any of our staff.

“Each and every one of our nurses, midwives and care assistants deserve to be praised for the amazing work that they do, each and every day,” added Greg. “This International Nurses Day, we hope that you will join us in thanking them all.”

The winner of the Health Care Assistant of the Year was won by Jane Trevarthen Jayne, who works in the Emergency Department, as part of the minors unit.

One of the doctors who she regularly works with, Mike Forster, said: “Jayne is a critical part of the team. Nothing is a trouble for her and she is always happy to go above and beyond to help patients, and assist staff in their work.

“Jayne helped to set up and champion our Rapid Assessment Service, which helps to deal with minor injuries and illness quickly, and overall helps the Trust to improve the minors service.

“Jayne always comes to work with a smile.

Without her, the minors unit would not be the same.”

Worth over £91 billion to the UK, the explosion of the creative economy has prompted the launch of the ‘1000 Makers’ campaign by local social enterprise, RIO – the Real Ideas Organisation.

RIO’s ‘1,000 Makers’campaign shines a light on the growth and prosperity of the creative industries for children and young people in the city. Now being heralded as the 4th Industrial Revolution, new technologies are combining with established practice to change the way we work and live our lives.

Launched in May to a community of creatives and business leaders, the campaign provides opportunities for businesses and Plymouth’s burgeoning community of makers to offer experiences to children and young people.

Jonathan Clitheroe, head of challenge based learning at RIO, said: “We believe it is essential that Plymouth’s young people have the experience of being makers, rather than solely passive consumers of technology. Our world needs makers: versatile, emotionally intelligent and agile makers. Makers who create with language, image, code, steel, clay or even policy.’

Lindsey Hall, chief executive of RIO, said: “In a world where the take up of creative subjects in schools is being squeezed and where industry is crying out for creative skills, 1000 Makers is a campaign to provide visibility to the fast-growing creative economy and show the significant potential for a career in this sector.”

1000 Makers echoes the government’s stance that creative skills are at the heart of the UK’s industrial strategy and with the creative industries growing at twice the rate of the UK economy as a whole, it is important to ensure today’s young people are prepared for the future career landscape.

Working with local makers, the first workshops kick-off at Ocean Studios in the picturesque Royal William Yard in June.

Participants will take part in high energy, collaborative making sessions where they will produce tech-enabled, large-scale scrap sculptures.

At the same time, the 1000 Makers website will launch, listing events and making

opportunities for children and young people as well as industry insight on the demand for creative skills in the workplace.

Other upcoming activity offers a chance for young people to get involved in Plymouth’s inaugural Robotic Sailing Championships in September, and Illuminate, the jaw-dropping light festival staged as part of Mayflower 400 celebrations when it returns to the city in November.

The Pharisees, blinded by their own offence and agendas, could never see God’s law with God’s eyes, so they missed His heart.

We can wonder whether Jesus’ conviction of their sin was enough to cut those hard hearts to allow love in again. After all, He is their Father, too.

More than punishing her sin, Jesus wanted her to be the woman He knew she could be. Theodore Dostoevsky said: ‘To love a person, means to see him as God intended him to be.’ Our accusers, those who hurt us, and ourselves included. That’s a tough call, so we need God’s help to do it.

The party was attended by more than 60 people, including Alan Drummond, the chairman of Marie Curie South West and his wife Carol, who is an ex-Marie Curie nurse.

All were treated to music from the Hele’s School Jazz Band. Delicious hot dishes of assorted curries and pastas, followed by traditional cakes of many flavours, with scones topped with jam and cream and cups of tea.

A special cake to commemorate Marie Curie Cancer Nurses Charity was presented and distributed to all party goers and a raffle with numerous prizes donated by various individuals.

The total sum raised, to be shared between Marie Curie Cancer Nurses and other local Lion charities amounted to a figure in excess of £800, which will be presented to the chairities by Lion President, Ian Hill.

The Lions gratitude goes to Lion Jim and all his family who took part in preparing such a successful event.

The Plymouth-wide school walking challenge – which was kicked off during national Walk To School Week in May - aims to collectively travel to the moon by the end of October. It’s all part of the Plymotion project which aims to get more people in Plymouth walking, cycling and using public transport and less people using cars.

Schools are being encouraged to design a friendship flag and groups of ten older children from each school will take part in a relay and be in with the chance of winning a visit from Space Odyssey, the travelling planetarium.

Second prize is a new ScooterPod for a lucky school and other prizes include stickers, water bottles, keyrings and more.

Kids will be encouraged along the way by Astro Mo, the Plymotion Moonwalk mascot.

Tessa Price from Plymotion said: “We’re really excited to launch our new Moonwalk challenge and we hope as many local schools will participate as possible.

“We also fully support the national Walk To School Week.

Anything that encourages people to take up more sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly ways to travel to and from school is something that we welcome wholeheartedly.
