Hope 4 Summer initiative brings hope to families in poverty

With an estimated 11,500 children in Plymouth living in poverty, local churches are making a massive difference.

Many children get a hot meal at school during term times and for some of these children it is the only hot meal they get, but what happens when they are on holiday and at home, especially when parents cannot afford to feed their children during the long summer holidays?

After learning about the need within the city, Churches Together in St Budeaux got together and talked about what they could do to help.

Linking with Transforming Plymouth Together, they decided to arrange an event in each of the churches and in the community centre every week during the summer holidays called Hope 4 Summer. This included fun activities, an opportunity to learn and do some crafts and an opportunity for a free meal for the children and families of the St Budeaux community. They also had the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and to learn how to make smoothies, pizzas and salad and veg dips.

With funding provided from Church Urban Fund and Transforming Plymouth Together, volunteers from the Baptist, Methodist, St Budeaux Parish and St Boniface Church worked together in each other’s church to share time and resources and over 550 children and families took part during the summer of 2017.

This summer, Churches Together in St Budeaux are planning to repeat the events of last year.

Funding has been given by the Drake Foundation and volunteers from all the churches are putting on activities each week of the summer holidays that will give children and families the opportunity of fun, learning and a good meal.

From bouncy castles at the Methodist Church to a spy adventure at the Parish Church, all participants are promised a great time. Their objective is to once again feed over 500 children and families.

Based on the experience in St Budeaux, development worker Chris Forster has worked with churches in other areas of the city to create a similar opportunity. So this year, Hope 4 Summer will be extended to the Devonport area with Devonport Baptist, Stoke Methodist, Salvation Army and St Michael’s Church all coming together to put on an activity at the Salvation Army Hall each Monday during August, full of fun, and food.

In the east end of the city, St Judes, Plymouth Christian Centre and Salisbury Road Baptist are also working together to have food and activities at each of the churches during the summer holidays. Chris is also working with other areas of the city to arrange more Hope 4 Summer events this year.

All of these events will be free and open to all in the areas. The team will also be working with CaterED, the school meal provider, that works hard to deliver packed lunches and food to local children during the long summer break.

More success for SEARCH

A ground-breaking scheme which creates employment opportunities for young adults with learning disabilities has celebrated another successful milestone.

Nine Project SEARCH interns became proud graduates recently, receiving their diplomas at a ceremony in front of parents, relatives, colleagues and friends.

Project SEARCH is a partnership between University Hospitals Plymouth, Pluss, Serco and City College Plymouth, which over the years has seen a total of 70 interns successfully complete the programme, all gaining diplomas in the process and many of them completing the programme with offers of permanent employment.

The ceremony was held at the Derriford Centre for Health and Wellbeing, where the interns and their guests heard about the various internships the group had undertaken. They reflected on their experiences and the skills and confidence they acquired from their time working within the hospital.

Reflecting on her time at Project SEARCH, graduate intern, Jenny Rawle, who worked as a ward clerk in the hospital, said: “My confidence has built up. I’ve used databases and worked on a busy hospital reception. I never thought I would be able to do that.”

The sentiment was shared by fellow graduate, Chantell Park, who said: “I’m

definitely more confident now. I’ve got much better interview skills.”

The other interns also spoke very highly of their time at the project and the experience they had gained.

Intern Ashlee Reed said: “Project SEARCH has changed me so much as a person. It’s helped me physically and mentally. I’m much more confident talking to people I don’t know.”

Richard Crompton, chairman at University Hospitals Plymouth, presented the certificates at the ceremony. Richard said: “This is the very best day of the year. Every year, it’s wonderful to hear your stories. I want to say thank you for what you bring to us as it is far more than we could ever give to you. The smiles and enthusiasm you bring is inspiring.

“Thank you to Pip Critten, the Project SEARCH team leader, the team and all of our partners for the work you’ve done to create such a fantastic scheme.

“Parents, families and friends of our interns, without your support over the years, I’m sure they wouldn’t be here, doing what they’re doing and going on to do fantastic things.”

Following formal applications and interviews, four of this year’s interns have secured paid work within the hospital. All of the interns are keen to get into paid work and are well supported as they continue their journey.

The graduates were joined by a special guest, Rebecca Dolton, who graduated from Project SEARCH in 2014. Although she did not leave the programme with paid work, she gave an inspiring message of encouragement to the graduating interns. “It can be hard not to give up; I’ve been there myself,” said Rebecca.

“I thought to myself, ‘I can’t give up’, so I kept trying and now I’m working on a checkout in Tesco three days a week”.

Mark Broadhead, parent of graduate intern, Benjamin Broadhead, said: “They’ve all learnt valuable life lessons; skills for life. Their success has been made possible by strong team leaders, Pip Critten, Michelle Petrie and David Hansford.”

Closing the ceremony, team leader Pip Critten told the graduate interns: “This is not the end; this is the beginning of your journey.”

Project SEARCH supports young adults between 18 and 24, living in Plymouth with learning disabilities by providing a Level 1 academic course, running alongside three internships within Derriford Hospital.

It is a partnership that provides real work experience based in Derriford Hospital, where interns learn the skills that all employers need together with specific skills for individual jobs.

Self build scheme for Ernesettle Work has started to turn an unused patch of land in Ernesettle into a self-builders’ blank canvas.

The former site of garages at the end of Maidstone Place is being transformed into four serviced plots to make it easier, quicker and cheaper for a self-builder to put a spade in the ground.

Plymouth City Council have contracted Eliot Design & Build, a local Small and mediumsized enterprise (SME), to improve access to the site and provide water, gas, electricity and broadband up to the boundary of the plots.

When work is complete, the plots will be sold, each complete with outline planning

consent for a house, and the receipts recycled to provide more plots elsewhere in the city.

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for Finance with oversight of strategic housing, said: “As the council’s self-build member champion, I’m very pleased to be able see work get underway at Maidstone Place.

“Although we must, as part of the Housing and Planning Act, provide sufficient planning consents for serviced plots to satisfy the demand evidenced by the Right to Build Register, in Plymouth we have decided to go one step further and provide some serviced plots directly in order to guarantee delivery.

“As a council, we want to encourage as

much self-build housing as possible to enable local business to benefit local people and so to be able to make this plot shovel ready is very exciting.”

Whilst work goes on at Maidstone Place, the Council will continue to work on identifying more sites suitable for local SME builders to develop both as housing and serviced plots to supply to those wishing to commission or build a home to suit their needs.

Fun Run raises over £1,000 for kids football teams

Over 130 young people along with family and friends took part in a community 3K Fun Run in Honicknowle to collectively raise over £1,000 to help support community football teams.

The race was held on the grounds of All Saints Academy Plymouth on June 2, and organised by local charity YMCA Plymouth in conjunction various teams from YMCA All Saints and Plymouth Warriors football clubs.

Barry Sellers, YMCA All Saints FC football coach said: “We’re really pleased to see so many people turn out and get involved. Our club has been hoping purchase a new lawnmower to keep our pitch in shape. It may only seem like a small thing, but these kinds of events

are really important to help small clubs like ours.”

People from all ages got involved on the sunny June morning which was ideal running conditions. The run was intended to be safe by keeping to the school grounds and with the accessible distance of three kilometres that all abilities could take part in.

Andrew Robertson, YMCA Plymouth managing director said: “It’s lovely to see people from the community come out to help their cause and raise so much money for local clubs. We would like to make the event bigger in future years with building upon the goal of making a difference for local community causes and charities.”

Pollyanna has an unhealthy relationship with cheese and is now 50% overweight

Pet Fit Club to help Pollyanna the podgy pug shift the pounds Pet Fit Club, the UK’s biggest and most successful pet slimming competition is back and Pollyanna the pug from Plymouth is in the runnings.

13 overweight pets from across the UK, including dogs, cats and even a rat, are chosen to battle the bulge. Together, the contestants weigh a huge 201kg and need to lose a combined total of

75kg to reach their ideal weights.

Pollyanna is a five year old pug from St Budeaux, owned by Ruth Stephens and her partner Juan Delgado. She currently weighs 11kg, a hefty 3.5kg heavier than her ideal weight. Ruth says that her partner’s habit of feeding Pollyanna treats and snacks is the main reason for her obesity problem.

She said: “She’s put on weight because we were

giving her lots of rubbish - titbits, cheese and bits of meat like chicken and tuna. Whatever Juan was eating, he would give her some too and this was happening on a daily basis. She’s only a small dog so it soon adds up.

“Pollyanna knows how to give the puppy dog eyes and I think Juan falls for it more than I do. If she sees us cooking, she jumps up at you as if to say ‘Can I have some?’

“Juan’s cut down on giving her treats a lot since the vet told us how overweight she was and the health implications. She’s my baby and I’ve warned him - I don’t want anything to happen to her so we have to change our ways!”

Ruth said Pollyanna struggles with longer walks and always seems out of breath. Flat faced (Brachycephalic) breeds of dogs such as pugs, French bulldogs and bulldogs commonly struggle with breathing problems due to their extreme facial confirmations. They often ‘snort’, pant or snore because of this which many owners think is normal, but is actually a symptom of their narrow airways. Carrying excess weight exacerbates these problems and can lead to severe side effects and a reduced life expentancy.

Ruth added: “I want her to lose weight and I want her breathing to be better. It would break my heart if anything happened to her and I’m determined to slim her down.”

Pollyanna’s six month Pet Fit Club diet and exercise programme will be specially tailored and overseen by vets and nurses at Plymouth PDSA Pet Hospital, located on William Prance Road.

Saltash Chronicles Embroidery Project Saturdays until September A community project inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry bringing together more than 60 local residents to produce an embroidered history of Saltash. The 100 feet long embroidery includes more than 50 scenes from the town’s history. The embroidery can be seen at Saltash Baptist Church on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm Coffee Morning July 7 Crownhill Methodist Church. 10.30am to 12pm.

All monies raised will be used to support Mercy Ships, a charity which uses hospital ships to deliver free vital medical care to some of the world’s poorest countries. Mercy Ships volunteers have completed thousands of urgent operations for conditions caused by poverty in more than 70 countries. All are welcome to the coffee morning where they will find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and admission is free. Entrance to the church hall is from Crownhill Road or the car park behind Crownhill shops, with free parking.

British Firework Championships Aug 8 - 9 The Hoe The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront in August. Plymouth Pavilions car park

Plans to build a hotel on land currently used as a car park for Plymouth Pavilions have been submitted to Plymouth City Council.

The proposal includes the six-storey 175-bed hotel - with associated restaurant, bar and leisure facilities - landscaping, car parking along with seven three bedroom town houses and seven ‘extended stay’ apartments for short-term let.

The development plan has been submitted on behalf of Vastint UK, a subsidiary of the Dutch-based parent company which has acquired the site.

Vastint are an international real estate organisation with over 25 years of experience.

It has undertaken numerous projects across Europe, including several in the UK. It has successfully delivered developments for Marriott’s Moxy Hotel brand, which is the one proposed for the Plymouth site - which is at the junction of Bath Street and Millbay Road.

According to the planning application Moxy Hotels are three star, lifestyle establishments offering affordable luxury to guests with a ‘vibrant, young spirit at heart.’

If given the go-ahead it is hoped that the hotel and associated development will be completed in time for the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020.

Plans have been submitted for Central Park’s new Community Sports Hub and tennis courts.

Situated in the heart of the park on the site of current bowling pavilion, the hub will complement the current bowling greens as well as the refurbished sports plateau by adding changing rooms, accessible toilets and storage facilities; opening up the park to a wider range of outdoor sports.

Meanwhile, four new hard-surfaced tennis courts will be created to the east of the hub.

Flood-lit and built to Lawn Tennis Association standard, the courts will combine pay-toplay access with free community events and coaching.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, said: “I am really pleased to support the plans for the Community Sports Hub and the tennis courts, which will improve the provision for sport across the park.

“Encouraging a wide range of people to visit and enjoy Central Park is at the heart of these plans and these innovative and fresh designs should do exactly that. I hope that in time, they will in time become focal points of the park.”

As part of the plans to create the hub, the existing pavilion will remain in place.

Upgrades will be made to the toilets, dry changing rooms and the kitchen and heating installed so that a wider range of community and sports groups will be able to use the space all year round.

An extension will see additional wetchanging facilities, designed to Football Foundation specifications, join the current dry changing rooms and two further rooms for referees and the ambulant disabled.

This will allow the hub to be used by football, rugby and cricket teams playing on the sports plateau and also accommodate those using the bowls and tennis facilities adjacent to the hub.

A main entrance will be incorporated into the north-facing side of the building to meet a new pathway where a grassed public space, suitable for families and over-spill from events at the hub, will be created. The current bowling greens to the west of the hub will be retained and upgraded.

The new hub has been designed by Erect Architecture and LDA Design. A consultation period will now run until July 10, when a final planning decision will be made.

NHS exhibition

An exhibition ‘Celebrating 70 years of the NHS’ continues until July 8 at Ford Park Cemetery. The exhibition is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10.30am and 3.30pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Refreshments are available in the Visitor Centre cafe.

The next exhibition ‘Plymouth on the Move’ will run from July 28 until September 9, giving an insight into transportation in the city over the years.

Land, sea and air transport will be featured in this exciting exhibition, which is being put together by the volunteers of the Heritage team, who work tirelessly to stage so many interesting exhibitions throughout the year. Same viewing times as the current exhibition.

To coincide with this exhibition a guided walk will take place on Sunday August 5, before which, organisers hope to have some vintage cars on display.

A Summer Fayre will be held on July 14 with stalls in the Visitor Centre, Victorian Chapel, the Northey Rooms and outside- weather permitting. Stalls include plants, bric-a-brac, home made cakes, jewellery and books.

Meanwhile the craft club ladies who meet every Wednesday morning are busy, knitting, sewing and making all sorts of wonderful items to sell on their stall. Refreshments, or for the more adventurous, Prosseco, with strawberries and cream, will be available to purchase from the cafe.

MP opens office in city centre Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, has opened a new city centre office.

One year from the date of the 2017 General Election, the new office has been opened to ‘do politics differently’. Unlike most MPs who have offices in business parks, their own homes or in inaccessible locations, Luke Pollard has chosen to open an office in the most accessible part of Plymouth – in the city centre.

The office has been designed to improve access for people in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport to their representative in Parliament.

The new office is right in the heart of the city centre at 13 Frankfort Gate, Plymouth, PL1 1QA, close to Plymouth City Market as well as important local services like Plymouth Community Homes’ offices and the Plymouth Credit Union.

The office will be open on weekdays and Saturdays and will provide a drop-in service to improve quality of service and increased, round-the-clock access for those who work or are busy during the working week. Since the election, Luke and his team have been working in temporary office locations.

New community garden for Manadon An overgrown public space near The Quarters in Manadon Park, Plymouth, has been transformed into a community garden thanks to the combined efforts of a team of local councillors, a community group, One Small Candle, and South West-based property developers, Burrington Estates New Homes.

Meet the young volunteer challenging perceptions YMCA Feature about autism

More than one in ten of the UK's population have the developmental disorder of autism, yet according to one Plymouth student there is still a lot of stigma and a lack of understanding about the disorder.

Emma Taylor is an 18 year old student at YMCA Plymouth’s Discovery College, studying Health & Social Care. Aside from studying on her course she also spends a considerable amount of her time lending her hand at YMCA’s Disability Trampolining club, soft play sessions and helping out at her local church. Emma also has autism, but says that’s no barrier, despite what people may think.

“There’s still a lot of stigma around autism, many people still don’t know what it is, they just have a

perception of it being negative” says Emma.

Emma has set out to challenge the stereotypes around autism, not only by setting an example, but also through her college study.

“I’m currently doing a research project as part of my Health & Social Care course and I’ve found there is really a lack of understanding about what autism is. Besides this, many people feel it is portrayed as

something negative in the media. But equally, I’ve found people do want to understand Autism better, so that’s what I’m trying to do.”

According to the NHS definition, autism is a spectrum of conditions that ‘affect a person’s social interaction, communication and a person’s interests and behaviour’. These symptoms can include a lack of understanding of other people’s emotions, having difficulty with

language, as well as wanting to keep to a routine.

“I say my mind just works differently to other people, I do get stressed with lots of people. I also get anxiety with new people and can struggle with my communication” says Emma.

Despite the challenges, Emma discovered a passion for volunteering last year when she had a placement at a local nursery and found using her own experience with Autism helped her to relate with other children.

“I saw a young girl who had autism and was quite isolated, other staff had tried to engage with her without much affect. I could relate with how she felt from my own experience so I went to play with her in a way that would help encourage her.

“It really worked and I noticed a big difference in her, she came out of her shell a lot. It made me feel really good to see the difference and that I could use my own experience to help others. Ever since then I decided that’s what I wanted to do for a career.”

Helping others also goes hand in hand with helping yourself says Emma, finding that volunteering has also helped her with some of her own difficulties.

“Through my volunteering at the YMCAs Inclusive trampolining club, I’ve been able to help out more. It was outside of comfort zone and talking to parents made me anxious at first, but it’s really helped me become more confident. I even saw someone I knew from the club in town the other day, and went up to talk to them, something I never would have done previously.”

With so many opportunities in Plymouth Emma thinks more people should get involved with volunteering, no matter what your ability, and that people shouldn’t see autism or disability as a barrier to helping out.

“I would say to anyone just do it, especially people with autism, it will really help improve your confidence and skills. Just look for something and give it ago.”

The van will also be used by other organisations to benefit Whitleigh residents. For example, from July 6 and then every Friday until September, the van will appear down on Whitleigh Green so that Livewell (www.livewellsouthwest.co.uk) can offer integrated health and social care services to those who stop by. If you see Winnie whilst you are out and about, stop by and have a chat.

Past Events: The Whitleigh Big Lunch and The Great Get Together, both on Whitleigh Green during June, were well supported and generated a lot of interest in the work we are doing around Whitleigh.

We are looking for local residents to join our Events Group which will then create and operate new ideas.

To join you only need to bring ideas and enthusiasm, and do not need to attend the main committee meetings. If you are interested then contact us through the website or Facebook and we will let you know when the group is meeting next.

There are lots of other local activities going on in the area – please check out our Facebook page and website.

Current Projects The Bench Project is underway and you may well see work in progress at one of the 6 sites. Local residents are encouraged to join in with the project - so look out for the work in progress and let us have feedback.

Some of the later benches will benefit from local participation. If you see a chance, go for it.

We will continue to seek feedback on the proposed Community Centre for Whitleigh throughout the Summer, and expect to then move on to a Feasibility Study in the Autumn to determine the location and full specification for facilities and services.

From archery to street dance via go-karting, boxing and a Poole Farm experience day, there really is something for everyone in this year’s Summer Mix activity programme.

Hundreds of activities are taking place at a range of different venues across the Plymouth to suit all interests and abilities. They’ve been organised by Plymouth City Council’s Community Connections Youth Team to liven up the school summer holidays.

You can sign up if you’re aged 11 to 19 years, or up to 25 if you have a disability, and all activities are free (except Friday youth evenings at Plymouth Life Centre which are £3.35 per session).

Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People for Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re delighted to have Summer Mix back again this year and there really is something for everyone with a fantastic range of courses.

Improvements at Sendalls Way junction

A six week project to upgrade the traffic signals and pedestrian crossing at the junction of Sendalls Way and Tavistock Road is under way.

The work will see the ageing signals upgraded with more modern and efficient technology that will better link to signals on Derriford Roundabout and William Prance Road.

The pedestrian crossing will also be upgraded to a toucan crossing, the two short sections of segregated walking and cycling paths resurfaced and the cycle path moved to the outside to link in with the improved routes along Tavistock Road.

Works were originally programmed to take place at the same time as the Derriford Transport Scheme works but additional traffic restrictions made delays much worse so the decision was taken to wait and return to the junction after the scheme’s completion.

There will be some temporary changes to the road layout at the junction while works are being carried out but access will be maintained to and from Sendalls Way. Traffic management arrangements will include: • Localised lane closures around the junction to provide a safe working space for the works (only in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm) • Temporary suspension of bus lanes along Tavistock Road at various points to maintain access for pedestrians while footway and cycleway surfacing is carried out • Temporary traffic signals at the junction for around a week and a half from Friday 13 July • Overnight closure of right turn into Sendalls Way at various points (traffic will be diverted

via William Prance Road and Tavistock Road outbound) • Closure of right turn out of Sendalls Way while the temporary signals are in place and overnight at various points (traffic will be diverted via Derriford Roundabout) • 30mph speed limit on Tavistock Road between Budshead Road and just north of Powisland Drive (both directions).

Works will be carried out during the day and overnight and every effort will be made to minimise noise and disruption.

If the programme changes, for example due to weather conditions, updates will be published on Plymouth City Council’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Updates will also be included in the weekly roadworks roundup (sign up at www.plymouth.gov. uk/roadworks).

Support for veterans, staffed by veterans

The Veterans Care Navigation Service, run by Improving Lives Plymouth, provides support for those who have left the military - recently or many years ago - to choose and access services that best meet their needs. The staff and volunteers are themselves veterans, and the team is headed up by Bill Jennings and Jo Brokenshire, both ex-Royal Navy.

Jo served for 17 years, until she was medically discharged in 2015. She had injured her shoulder coming down a ship’s ladder and in spite of treatment did not recover enough for service.

“I left the Navy on good terms,” says Jo, “but after my final medical board, when I was told I would be discharged, the support I had received from the Navy just stopped. At first I didn’t know where to go for help.”

This is something Jo finds that many veterans encounter. “ They have lived in a routine for years where most things are provided.

Many of them simply don’t know how to find what’s available to help them, or even that there is help available in the first place.”

Jo was fortunate in that she was supported by her husband, also in the Navy, and she was able to adjust to civilian life more easily.

She saw her current role advertised on Facebook, and although she did not need a job, she applied and was successful at interview.

“I wanted to do something to help other veterans to get the help they need. I’d found support myself but so many people just don’t

know where to start; I wanted to be part of making that better.”

Many ex-service personnel face additional barriers to getting help. “Lots of them don’t see themselves as veterans, which they are. And they don’t like to ask for help, they think it’s for someone worse off than them, which it isn’t – there’s help for anyone who has left the services.

“We open their eyes to things that are available, we give them their options and support them to get going,” says Jo. “People don’t like coming into an office sometimes, so we’ll meet them at home, or out for a coffee. I spend a lot of time at Costa. Rather than a formal interview, we just talk, and in the course of that we generally find out what people are struggling with.

“From there, we can point them in the right direction and support them as they work it through.”

Veterans Care Navigation helps people to identify what their needs are, and gives them information so that they can choose for themselves what help they access.

The team can refer to a range of specialist support organisations, and they can advise on issues like benefits and grants for essential items and home adaptations.

If you are a recent leaver or have been out of the military for some time you can contact them to get the support you need. The support available includes: • Information, advice and signposting for veterans and their dependants.

• Support for veterans and their dependants to navigate and choose services that best meet their needs.

• Work with partner organisations to deliver the required support.

• Assessments of need and support plans developed with you.

• Outreach work in various community settings.

Work of RNLI in Plymouth discussed at Moor’s Edge U3A The work of the RNLI in Plymouth was the topic for discussion at the monthly meeting of Moor’s Edge U3A. Guest speaker was Christopher Turner, sea safety officer and duty launching officer gave an interesting and informative presentation on the RNLI. The RNLI has four craft based in Plymouth including an all-weather lifeboat, an inshore lifeboat, inshore rescue boat and a Yankee boat which sits on the all-weather craft and can be crane lifted off.

He explained that each year there are between 130 and 140 launches of RNLI boats based in Plymouth. The cost of keeping the RNLI operational nationally is close to half a million pounds a day and much of the money is raised through donations, fund raising and charity boxes.

Moor’s Edge U3A meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at the Woolwell Centre. Local people who are retired or semiretired are welcome to attend.

The U3A has recently started a new interest group with members wanting to learn to speak Spanish. They plan to start their learning with a couple of verbs, numbers up to ten and vocabulary of household items.

There is a wide variety of interest groups including Family History, Weekenders, Bridge, Arty Crafty and Literature among others.

The next general meeting at the Woolwell Centre is on July 12 at 2.30pm when Bruce Hunt will give a talk about Saltash. The afternoon will finish with time for refreshments and a chat. Guide to urban gardening

As I write this, we have been enjoying some lovely weather throughout May and June after such a cold and late start to Spring! There has been lots of sunshine mixed with some showers (which is good for the garden) which has enabled everyone to get out and Get Into Gardening.

The weather was great for the week of the Chelsea Flower Show which always inspires people to get gardening. This year there were some really strong themes based on smaller gardens and container gardening or Urban Gardening to be posh!

Woodlodge Pots, which we sell here, were featured too. All of us here and you, our customers, particularly love their Heritage range (see picture below). Pop into the centre to see it on display!

You may have seen a selection of plants in our plant area which were grown by the Hillier Nursery. Hillier (who also have 12 garden centres of their own) joins forces with a designer every year to create a wonderful show garden for the RHS Shows.

Since 2016, the garden designer Sarah Eberle has collaborated with Hillier to design their much-anticipated show garden. She is the most decorated designer in Chelsea history having won gold in more categories than any other designer.

A little known fact which some of you may or may not know is that Sarah Eberle actually worked here at Plymouth Garden Centre back in the early 1980s. Some of you may have had some design work carried out by her!

Hillier’s show garden was named the ‘Stihl Inspiration Garden’, designed to incorporate their own mission statement ‘To inspire the

creation of green living spaces for now and the future’.

The idea that no matter what size garden you have or type of gardener you are, everyone can have an outdoor space that fills them with pride and ensures they can have a little slice of paradise right outside their own backdoor.

At Plymouth Garden Centre the Urban Gardening concept is something that is important to us being surrounded by ‘city living’. Container gardening in particular is an important part of our own market, and we can help you choose the right plants and pots for your outdoor living space.

Another strong feature at Chelsea were Herbaceous Perennials. So, what does Herbaceous actually mean? Herbaceous refers to any plant which has a non-woody stem and perennials are plants which will come back again the following year (depending on frost temperatures!).

So, I have put together a list of our favourites which add style, colour and most are great for the bees. As we go through the summer months more and more herbaceous perennials become available too!

Sunny areas: • Salvia and Nepeta – blues , purples, whites • Geum – yellows and oranges • Dianthus and Astrantia - pinks and whites.

Dianthus ’Pink Kisses’ is fab!

• Agapanthus – great in the ground or in a pot • Lupins – out of this world. Tolerate most soils and they make nitrogen so they feed themselves!

Dappled Shade: the plants that see sun for part of the day • Hostas, Digitalis – foxgloves Light Shade: Hardy Geranium Rozanne Deep Shade: Ferns Wet Areas: Zantedeschia – great in a pot. Iris, Astilbe A few other plants I think are looking great at the moment too are Hardy Gerberas, Gazania’s, Rudbeckia, Erysimum and Echinacea.

As with all plants, if you do have pets please do read up as some are toxic to pets and children in different ways. Often they would need to consume a large quantity of foliage or seeds but if you have a puppy like mine who likes to help with the gardening be mindful of what you put in the garden and where.

Jobs to do in the garden in July

Many of the tasks at this time of year are designed to maintain the health and flowering period of your garden and flowers. You can now enjoy the garden as all the hard work from previous months pays off!

As you harvest all your fruit, veg and herbs follow these few tasks to keep your garden looking blooming marvellous through the Summer months!

Deadheading your plants: This is often a big but gradual task and it will allow your plants to flower again and again. Most plants including summer bedding, herbaceous perennials and roses will really benefit from a continued attention to faded and wilting blooms. Once removed the plant puts its energy into creating more buds and flowers.

Deadheading also allows you to have a little ‘potter’ around your garden, enjoying see the efforts of your labour!

Lawncare: We have done battle with our lawn for 12 months now and finally we are getting somewhere.

We decided to just tackle the weeds head on with a specific lawn weed killer and then fed it later with a lawn feed. We have used Westland’s Safe Lawn because we have two Labradors and I have to say the lawn has done really well! Make sure you don’t cut your lawn too short so that it retains moisture and nutrients which it relies on if the weather is hot and dry. New lawns will need periodic watering too while turf or new seeds develop. If it’s dry we give ours a water anyway when we do the borders.

Watering and Feeding: Water your plants in the evenings as temperatures cool down if you can. If not, early morning but avoid the main sunshine as plants dry out quickly and leaves can get scorched. Baskets and containers will dry out more quickly. If you haven’t planted yet you can use a gel product to help retain moisture. Incorporate a weekly or fortnightly liquid feed into your watering programme as this will allow plants and flowers to flourish and well-fed plants can fight pests and diseases better. Roses can be vulnerable if they dry out. Keep an eye out for aphids at this time of year.

However, despite years working in the construction industry, when circumstances forced a change in direction, local man Mark Pascoe took his hard graft ethos and is using it in the world of oven cleaning.

“I don’t rush the job,” explained Mark, who only charges a flat fee for each visit. “I like to do it properly, and this can take well over two hours, up to four hours if I am cleaning a Range cooker, hood and extractor.

Factory development will bring jobs boost to Belliver

More jobs are on the horizon for Plymouth thanks to new factory space being built in Belliver.

Council leader Tudor Evans announced that the Council would be investing £2.4 million into creating brand new facilities at Broadley Park Industrial Estate.

“This is not just about helping business flourish.

It’s about the 65 people that could be employed in the unit we will build, it’s about the 100 or so people who will help build the factory space and the countless local businesses who will also benefit.

“All of these people will have money in their pockets, some job security and opportunity here in Plymouth. That’s why we are doing this.”

The 1.65 acre plot on the Council-owned site at Broadley Park Road Industrial Estate, Belliver, could provide around 2,090 sq m (22,500sqft) of sustainable, high quality, employment space for small or medium sized business or if appropriate large businesses.

It is proposed that the development will be built with sustainable technology to minimise carbon emissions and running costs, potentially including solar photovoltaic, better insulation ventilation and highly efficient heating sy stems.

A business case is expected to be signed later this week authorising the £2.4 million investment

from the Council’s capital programme to get the ball rolling.

A report prepared by chartered surveyors Jones Lang LaSalle in 2016 highlighted a shortage of good quality employment space in Plymouth.

There have been improvements within the market with the city’s industrial estates, which have always been well let with a steady demand.

The Council has a history of successful direct development projects including Hearder Court – Langage phases 1 and 2 – and Oceansgate in Devonport.

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet Member for Finance added: “Building industrial units has proved to be the right call. The first phase of Langage was quickly snapped up and Oceansgate

is attracting significant interest from specialist marine and research companies looking to move to Plymouth.

Broadley Park is a well-established and popular location for businesses. Creating units which companies can move into makes sense – not just for economic growth of the city but the income we earn from the rent we can reinvest in services for our city.”

While the land is owned by Plymouth City Council, it falls within South Hams District Council’s boundary. Any proposals would be subject to the South Hams planning processes.

A planning application is expected to be submitted before the end of the year.

The Lions Club of Plymouth held their annual Swimarathon earlier this year raising an impressive £7,800 in the process.

Leading Plymouth researcher made OBE in Queen’s Honours A world-leading researcher and role model for women in science and engineering has been made an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Deborah Greaves, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Plymouth, has been recognised for her significant contributions to research into offshore renewable energy.

That work, and her leadership at a national level, is having a direct impact on the expansion of a sector which will play a key role in the UK’s future energy production.

But she is also at the forefront of inspiring more women and girls to consider a career in engineering, a profession that has traditionally been maledominated.

Professor Greaves’ award reflects her impact in both areas, and her nomination was supported by leading figures from both academia and industry.

She said: “This has come as a huge surprise, and I am of course delighted to receive such personal recognition for my work. However, I am only one for a long time. Just bought your first fish tank? Then Plymouth Fishkeepers Society is the place for you.

Reformed addict wins top award A Devonport man who turned his life around has been honoured with a top award.

Adam Ballantine - turned his life round

Reformed drug addict Adam Ballantine has been announced as Festival of Learning’s Learning for Health Highly Commended Individual in their 2018 awards for his exceptional achievements in adult learning.

The award celebrates adults who have transformed their own lives and the lives of their families, friends, their communities, and the places they work through learning.

Adam, who is 41, grew up in a travelling family which meant it was a challenge to access regular education. He turned to drugs and alcohol and a life of ‘bad decisions.’

One day, Adam decided to change his fortune and checked himself into rehab. Here, he attended a two-day course in psychology and became convinced that this was his future.

Adam worked hard to achieve his Maths and

English functional skills. He then enrolled on an Access to Social Science course at City College Plymouth which helped him understand his own addictions and gave him the skills to teach others how to deal with their illness.

Alongside his studies, Adam attends treatment centres to share his story and encourage others to turn their lives around. Working with Closereach and Broadreach charities he is determined to make a difference in his own community.

Adam spoke about the impact his learning has had: “My learning has given me the opportunity to grow in confidence and boost my self-esteem. I’ve learned a lot about myself and have used many of the techniques I’ve been taught to help manage my own addiction.

“In a way, I am not just learning to help others but I am also learning to help myself. Speaking to people in the same situation, I am able to use my learning to explain addiction and how they too can break out of the mould if they choose to. My learning

has given direction, motivation and purpose.”

Gemma Hutchings, Access co-ordinator at City College Plymouth said: “Adam is on a very personal journey - he has gone from addict to recovering addict, and now from learner to teacher.

“He truly puts his heart into helping others and is a very positive example of how education can change people’s lives.

Stephen Evans, chief executive at the Learning and Work Institute, said: “Adam’s story is a powerful example of how adult learning can have a transformative impact on health and wellbeing.

Not only has he learned how to better manage his own addiction, Adam is inspiring and supporting others to do the same through his work in the community.

“Festival of Learning is all about inspirational stories of people like Adam that show that anyone can benefit from learning. Lifelong learning is vital for all of us as jobs and society change around us.”

Picnic litter pick Talented Bridey is flying high at Camp America

Volunteers at Stoke Traders and Residents Association (STAR Association) are holding a picnic litter pick on Wednesday July 11.

Children are encouraged to bring their parents and a family picnic. Meet at The Stoke Youth and Community Centre at 4pm for the start of a grand picnic in the park. Those attending will be able to enjoy wonderful company and fabulous panoramic views from this unique vantage point.

After the picnic, the litter pick will focus on The Blockhouse Park although the plan is for some of the volunteers to move on to Masterman Road and Devonport Road. This will provide an excellent opportunity to meet one of the Group’s aims of improving two-way communications with residents and traders.

Additionally, the litter pick will help further enhance the area in readiness for the Summer Fun Day taking place on Saturday July 21 in The Blockhouse Park and Masterman Road.

At the conclusion of the litter pick, everyone is invited to return to The Stoke Youth and Community Centre for a refreshing complimentary cuppa, all thanks to the kind donation of tea bags and coffee by The Co-op at St George’s Terrace. From 5.30pm, attendees can share ideas, learn more about how and why STAR Association began, what has been achieved so far and help to map out what could happen next. Provisional plans for redeveloping The Blockhouse Park will also be on view. The meeting will provide excellent opportunities to raise issues.

Attendees will also hear from Pete Davey, a Stonehouse resident, who is a champion in helping revitalise community interaction by capturing stories and memories. Pete’s initiative involved Stonehouse residents to begin with however he now helps with other projects. These include history walks, photography courses, and training volunteers to use recording equipment and interview people. Pete will be instrumental in providing his expertise to the STAR volunteers to help them engage with all visitors at the fun day be they 4 or 104 and capture their memories at the Summer Fun Day on Saturday July 21.

A 19 year old student who has excelled with her work on a number of community projects in Barne Barton is now using her experience at Camp America in California.

Bridey Borda started working on a local photography project run by Tamar View and FotoNow - a local community interest company - when she was just 13.

Bridey said: “Six years ago I had no idea how to use a DSLR camera and now, through the support of FotoNow and Tamar View I have gone on to study photography, have had the chance to exhibit my work and even sold some of my work to the Lord Mayor!

“This then led me to being able to help young people to create their own work and produce Scrapbooks called Barne Barton: Then and Now. My photography at Tamar View has come full circle and I am now aiming to set up more photography and mixedmedia projects with young people in the future.”

Bridey, who attended Marine Academy Plymouth, is now studying youth and community work at Marjon

- having received a £4,000 bursary from FotoNow last year. The bursary was made available thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Clarion Futures and the North Yard Community Trust in support of a local heritage project called The Island Stories.

Earlier this year she applied to Camp America and is now assisting the photography department at YMCA Camp Campbell in Boulder Creek, California. She will also be involved in social media work.

Bridey flew out to the USA at the beginning of June and will return to the UK in September. Before she left Bridey said: “I am really excited to be heading off to America - it will be a totally new experience for me.”

While she is the USA Bridey will be heading to San Francsisco for an Ed Sheeran concert. “I can’t wait,” she added.

She has been a fantastic role model for young people in Barne Barton and has demonstrated just how much can be achieved with dedication and determination. We wish her well.”

City campaigns for support ships to be built in UK

Plymouth is to join a campaign calling for the next generation of ‘solid fleet support ships’ to be built in the UK. A campaign will be launched in the city on July 13 urging that vessels which supply and support the Royal Navy are built in this country rather than contracts being tendered to international competition.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “Quite

simply, we think the UK Government should have the ships – which will be supporting and supplying our warships – built in the UK. “This is a national campaign but the impact of the government’s proposed approach will be felt here, if this is allowed to happen. “This is about retaining ship building skills here in the UK, about insuring highly skilled businesses, including companies

such as Babcock which have specialist ship designers can have jobs and a continuing supply of work.

“We may not build warships here, but as Britain’s Ocean City and one which plays a key role in defending the realm as well as employs thousands of people in the marine and marine technology industries, we need the Government to change their approach.”

Carers Week in Plymouth came this year with added music.

Plymouth City Council, and Caring for Carers – a partnership between Improving Lives Plymouth and Age UK - worked together to ensure the estimated 29,000 carers in Plymouth knew that help is available in the city, and part of this was a week of events between June 11 and 17 including music (performed by local musicians who also happen to be carers) and art sessions, supported by local charities Plymouth Music Zone, Colebrook South West Ltd and Improving Lives Plymouth.

In addition, the council has recently joined the Employers for Carers scheme, which will help it and a number of other organisations in the city support carers who work for them.

The scheme will provide practical resources, advice and information designed to help employers look after staff who are juggling work alongside caring for someone.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older.

Young carers are children and young people who provide care and support for loved ones. Support available for young carers in Plymouth includes group sessions at Efford Youth Centre every Tuesday evening.

The sessions are free to join but you would need to have been referred by a professional such as your doctor, an educational psychologist, health visitor or your school.

The sessions include fun activities like cooking, arts, sports, pool, gaming or just the chance to meet and socialise with other young carers. To find out what help you can get, email gateway@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 668000.

As an avid football fan, I have loved major tournaments for as long as I can remember.

The anticipation after the teams have qualified, the expectation after the squads have been announced and the ups and downs of following my team as the tournament unfolds.

Being English it does usually end in heartbreak, traditionally after a penalty shootout against the Germans or the Italians. Nevertheless I love it.

Like many millions around the world I will be glued to the screen for the next month watching as many games as I can. The theme of this year’s Carers Week, led nationally by Carers UK, was coming together to build communities that support the health and wellbeing of carers. Across the UK there are around 6.5 million people who care for a parent, partner, child or friend.

Improving Lives Plymouth, caring for carers manager Lee Sewrey said: “This carers week we pledged to facilitate activities and events that provided health and wellbeing benefits for carers and allowed them to have a little ‘me time’.”

Honesty is the best policy

BY DAVE SIMPSON, STATION MANAGER CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH a world cup for me to talk to them about different managers, transfers and all kinds of others aspects of the beautiful game. However when it comes to more serious matters like how we’re really doing in life the conversation doesn’t flow quite so freely.

When asked, ‘how are you?’ by a close friend I know that quite often I’ll respond with ‘good thanks’ regardless of how I have actually been feeling. I am quite often very genuinely ‘good thanks’ but on those days when that isn’t the case I know that a close friend might be able to help and not opening up and moving the conversation on to football or something else more trivial doesn’t really help anyone.

I’m aware this isn’t an issue just for men but I do know that my wife, my mum and other women in my life are often better at sharing how they are really feeling and helping each other through the hard times.

Sadly statistics in the UK do suggest that there is a gulf in how men and women cope when times get tough.

According to the Office of National Statistics a staggering 76% of all suicides

are committed by men. There will be multiple factors as to why that figure exists but I wouldn’t be surprised if part of it has to do with men not talking honestly about how they’re feeling.

I wonder whether some of this has to do with the phrase ‘man up’.

Unfortunately, in my experience at least, to be a man often means to be strong and unwavering both physically and emotionally. Figures released around mental health week in 2017 suggested that only 1 in 5 men would seek help for anxiety or depression.

It seems that men are prone to putting on a brave face and playing pretend. This may fool those around us but it doesn’t fool ourselves and nor does it fool the one who knows us best.

There is a famous quote in the Bible which says; ‘People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.’ God knows what is really going on inside all of us. There is no use hiding from Him. Not only does He see us as we truly are but He cares about us more than we’ll ever know and wants us to flourish in life.

The first step in that journey, whether you are a man or a woman, is being honest.

If, like me, you are hooked on world cup fever then enjoy it! Make the most of every moment and every match. Then when it comes to the post-match pint, if you know deep down that everything is not ok then please don’t simply ‘man up’ instead open up to those around you who care.

Students to ‘wok n roll’ at Ocean City Sounds

A team of students from City College Plymouth will once again be catering for VIP guests at the city’s premier music event - MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds.

City College is the music extravaganza’s corporate hospitality partner and students and staff will be providing street-style food from the wok, barbecue and grill in the exclusive VIP area on The Hoe.

Chloe Lillicrap, 19, was one of the student team catering last year’s music event.

She said: “It was great to be involved with something so different and a fantastic end to a fantastic year at

City College Plymouth.”

MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds takes place on July 26 and 27 with acts including Bastille, Ella Eyre, Professor Green and Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra.

The Mustard Tree Cancer Support Centre at Derriford Hospital has received a generous donation of more than £1160 from patient Vicky Couch and the Royal Naval Air Station, Yeovilton (also known as HMS Heron).

The Mustard Tree provides support to people with cancer, their families and their carers. The centre is available to anyone affected by cancer, at any stage of the illness.

Before her cancer diagnosis, Vicky had visited the centre in the past in a professional capacity, working as a community palliative care nurse during the mid-nineties. When Vicky received bad news at her first oncology appointment, she and her family needed somewhere quiet and private to go; her first thought was the Mustard Tree.

“I remember patients and relatives who had made use of the resources provided by the Mustard Tree had always spoken highly of the kindness and support they received,” said Vicky.

“We arrived confused and upset. We were offered support, information, space and kindness. Almost a year later, I have become

a regular visitor.

“I have had the benefits of treatments such as counselling, reflexology and massage.

great friends there. Ed was due to take up a new post in Portsmouth and traditionally, he would have attended a farewell dinner in the Mess but Vicky’s health at the time meant he

was unable to attend. The Mess Committee decided to organise a fundraising dinner as an alternative.

Non Commissioned Officers at HMS Heron came together and arranged a ‘Toptable lunch’ event in the Warrant Officers’, Seniors Rates’ and Sergeants’ Mess. The lunch and raffle were generously supported and raised a fantastic £1163.35 for the Mustard Tree. Ed was able to attend and Vicky was offered the opportunity to decide what the money raised should be used for.

“I was asked where I would like the money to go,” said Vicky. “The committee felt strongly that it should be a local charity that had made a difference to me and my family.

I didn’t hesitate to nominate the Mustard Tree.

“The generous donations from everyone who attended was a lovely surprise and very much appreciated.”
