ON CLIMATE

CHANGE

Saltash Environmental Action (SEA) are very concerned about climate change, and feel it is now vitally important to make big changes particularly in use of energy and transport.

They wondered whether the general public held the same view, so they organised a questionnaire of Saltash residents in March 2019 to ask them about their beliefs on climate change. The survey was conducted in Fore Street, and outside the Leisure Centre.

121 people filled in the questionnaire, which asked five questions. Two thirds of those who responded were women, and half were under 54 years old.

The survey found that 79% of people believed

that the recent severe weather events were due to climate change; only 3% thought the storms and floods were not linked to climate change.

When asked how concerned they were about climate change, nine out of ten people said they were either ‘very’ or ‘fairly’ concerned, which was backed up by the fact that 85 of them (70%) had already started making some changes in their life to reduce climate change, such as cutting down on gas or electricity in the home.

The questionnaire then reminded people that, in Paris in 2015, the UK government made a pledge on climate change, and asked how important it was to keep that pledge. A total of 79% thought it was ‘very’ important, and a further 9% ‘fairly’ important. In answering the fifth question, 99 (82%) thought the government were not doing enough about climate change at the moment, and should do more.

Clearly, SEA found evidence that the great majority of people are worried about climate change and think the government should do more.

GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR VILLAGE HALLS The Village Hall Improvement Fund, against which DEFRA has allocated a budget of £3 million is intended for village hall committees to support the refurbishment and alteration of their buildings. This can cover improvement works on existing facilities as well as new meeting rooms.

Halls must be in towns or villages of under 10,000 people. Grants can support a mumber of different things for example new roofs, improvements to energy efficiency,refurbishment of toilets and kitchens, wifi or replacement of doors. Registered charities or churches may apply for a grant of between £10,000 and £75,000 for up to 20% of the eligible costs and schemes were match funding is already in place will be prioritized.

ALLOTMENTS GROW £1500

Lynher View Allotment Association have recently handed over a donation of £1500 to the local children’s charity Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Fundraising by the allotment association, which is based at Churchtown Allotments in Saltash, has been led by keen gardener Vic Kingswell.

Vic has been regularly selling any excess vegetables he has from his crop which has quickly added up to £1500 for CHSW – their chosen charity.

STROKE

SUPPORT

Volunteer Cornwall are looking for volunteers again to help recent stroke patients in their recovery journey. Stroke Befriending volunteers meet with other stroke patients on a regular basis and offer support and encouragement.

It’s been found this can really help people feel less isolated and more connected to their community. Volunteers are supported every step of the way and expenses are refunded.

As a volunteer you can use your experience to help others, receive valuable training and gain skills in

befriending. We asked Margaret, one of Volunteer Cornwall’s volunteers, what it’s like being a Stroke Befriender: “You are doing something positive after something that hasn’t been something very pleasant for yourself…I always feel that if you can help someone else it’s all worthwhile and you can pass on your knowledge and information to them and hopefully they will gain from it too... SCOOTATHON

Recently, after the usual breakfast and early family service at Saltash Wesley Methodist Church the young people, along withyoungsters from Landrake Messy Church went down to the Sports Hall. This had been laid out as a race track with sharp bends, humps and slalem poles. The track had been designed and laid out by three of the young boys from Landrake Messy Church ably assisted by Paul Melling. All had scooters and the five year olds completed five laps of the track.

Then the older children completed 10 laps each, cheered on by parents and friends.

The event was arranged to support Water Aid, a charity which provides accessible water to communities in the world that otherwise have to struggle to obtain this vital commodity. Saltash Wesley supports Water Aid every year in Lent and this event raised nearly £400.

Volunteer Spotlight Article by Jo Baskottt

Dementia Voice PL12 is just one of the local activities organised and run by volunteers from Community Enterprises PL12. We caught up with some of the volunteers to find out what it’s all about.

Rose, one of the Directors of Community Enterprises PL12, explained “We felt there was a very real need in Saltash for an organisation to support people with dementia, and to support their Carers. After asking a few questions, it became clear that what was really wanted was a drop-in café, where people living with dementia can chat to others who understand.” And so, Dementia Voice was set up, by a group of volunteers.

Since then it’s expanded to include a Drop-In Café, Veteran’s Group (many of the attendees at the café have been ex-service personnel) and a much-loved Walking Group. Rose continues “Things can be done to help people living with the symptoms of the disease. A lot of people are frightened of dementia, and at Dementia Voice PL12, we can help overcome that fear; just sitting and chatting can make such a difference. People living with dementia are still the same person they’ve always been; we talk to that person, no matter how far along their journey they are - their long-term memories are still there, and so many of them have had fascinating lives, and tell the most wonderful stories. I’ve met the most wonderful people, and I get far more out of volunteering than I could ever put in.”

Volunteer and co-ordinator Linda agrees. “When a partner is living with the disease, it’s easy to lose friends

who don’t understand what’s happening. Dementia Voice PL12 is a lovely friendly group, and I’ve made new friends who understand the condition. Volunteering helps me give something back, and settle in to my new home in a new town. I want to help and keep busy; my son says he can never get hold of me, as I’m always busy.”

Carol, facilitator for the Veteran’s Group, added “My husband Ken was diagnosed with vascular dementia 6 months after we moved here. Ken was a former Royal Marine, and it was his idea to start the Veteran’s Support Group. Ken and I have spoken at conferences and afterdinner speeches, promoting positivity in living with dementia. Our volunteers are a mix of serving personnelmale and female- and veterans, and its wonderful for them to be able to swap stories with each other and the rest of the group. We support each other, and I feel privileged to facilitate the group. Strong friendships have been forged here, in a safe and comfortable environment where volunteer support, peer support, and dignity are important.”

Owen, volunteer for the Drop-In Cafe and the Walking Group, explained how volunteering has helped him; “I was a full-time carer to my father for about 5 years. When he passed away, I felt lost and empty for a long time. I wanted to get back into work and thought that voluntary work would help me achieve this goal. Volunteering has really helped me move forward, and has helped my confidence, and I’ve made new friends. If you’re thinking about volunteering, I would say - give it a go!”

INTERGENERATIONAL FRIENDS Asheborough House is a characterful, beautifully kept, residential home tucked away in a secluded corner of Saltash.

Normally a haven of calm, once a week for the last six weeks, it has been infiltrated by a small bunch of exuberant early years pupils from St Stephens Community Primary School.

The young students have been having a ball, ably hosted by Kate and Becky, activities coordinators at Asheborough House. And quite a few

of the residents have shown a real interest too.

Clearly the fun of scented playdough, bubble pictures or melted chocolate doesn’t go away with age!

The children work alongside residents of Asheborough, a specialist dementia care provider, , making lovely tactile things - the Easter chocolate egg nests went down a particular storm with quite a bit of finger licking.

The group is kept deliberately small so as not to overwhelm the older

community news residents, and has brought the same people together over the weeks, meaning that quite a few relationships are blossoming.

One older gentleman is so enthused, he has been regaling his family with stories about what the children get up to. In other cases, it’s the activities that come up trumps - one of the ladies explained, “I just want the chocolate!”

Another activity that went down a storm was a visit from well known Saltash Music Man, David, who had everyone engaged in singing rhymes and songs that span generations and clearly bring back a host of memories. Being able to make their own musical instruments as well meant that the peace and tranquillity was well and truly disrupted, at least for a short while. Anyone for a rousing chorus of “Pop Goes the Weasel”?

“The project has been such a lovely

example of giving our young children experiences they might not otherwise have” explained teacher and head of early years, Michelle Crowley. “We’re delighted that the children have been such great ambassadors for the school and have chatted away to the older residents.”

Kate and Becky are also equally pleased with how the sessions have gone. “They definitely have brought more light and colour into the home, and given the option to those of our residents who are interested to interact with quite young children again, which is an experience often missed when you enter residential care. We’re also welcoming families, grandchildren and great grandchildren to our Easter Family Day, complete with a full roast dinner!”

And there is always the possibility of a little lie down afterwards!

Swim your favourite coastline for the RNLI Set yourself the ultimate challenge this May by swimming the length of your favourite coastline whilst raising money for the RNLI. Launching on Wednesday 1 May and running for the whole of the month, the RNLI’s Mayday campaign is calling on people to ‘do their bit, fund our kit’ with the lifesaving charity hoping to raise £700,000 to fund the crucial kit volunteer crews rely on, like lifejackets, helmets and the RNLI’s iconic yellow wellies.

Alongside other events taking place across the region, those in the south west can sign up for a Mayday swim challenge.

Whether you fancy taking on the ultimate challenge of swimming the Channel, or the length of your local beach or river, anyone can enter and can opt to swim any distance. And you don’t have to swim the full distance in one go – simply split your chosen distance into lengths and keep going until you reach your target.

Trish Veale from Saltash in Cornwall took on the Mayday swim challenge in 2018. Trish, who regularly swims at her local leisure centre, decided to swim the five mile distance between two local headlands Rame Head to the Mew Stone off Wembury beach, a total of 320 lengths.

Trish raised an astonishing £500 by asking friends at her ladies choir and local sailing club as well as family to sponsor her challenge.

Trish said; ‘I’ve been swimming for about 20 years, doing about 30-40 lengths a few times a week. I chose a manageable distance to swim over three weeks and just added an extra 10 lengths to each of my sessions.

I left the final mile or 64 lengths to my last session which the most I have ever swum so I certainly had a feeling of accomplishment from the challenge.’

Trish says she was astonished by people’s generosity. She continued; ‘I was delighted to be able to raise such a fantastic amount for the RNLI.

charity news My husband and I have supported the charity for a long time, and this was a great way to achieve something at a time and pace that suited me, breaking it up into chunks to keep it manageable and raise vital funds.’

Henry Irvine, RNLI Lead supervisor for East Devon and ex-professional IRONMAN triathlete and certified swimming coach said; ‘This challenge is a great way Henry for people to support the RNLI Irvine, RNLI Lead and take on a personal goal at Supervisor the same time. The sponsorship money you raise will make a real difference to the RNLI.’ Henry gives some helpful tips to make the most of your RNLI Mayday Challenge.

Plan Whether you’re completing your Mayday swim in one attempt or ticking it off over multiple sessions, break it down in to chunks to make the challenge more manageable.

• To achieve a long continuous swim then consider taking someone to count the lengths for you so that it’s one less thing to worry about.

• If you don’t have someone to count the lengths then break it down in to sections.

This can either be in your head or place some objects on the side of the pool so that every time you complete a section you can stack/ group them e.g. moving coins from one pot in to another until they’re all gone • Leisure centre lane swimming sessions can sometimes be busy, tell a leisure assistant about your plans and ask for their advice on when’s the best time to swim so that you have the space you need to go at your own speed. Don’t forget to tell them it’s for charity!

Prepare - Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer

or just dipping your toe in the water, making sure your body is ready to take on what you’re asking of it is vital.

• Be realistic about what you’re trying to achieve. Consider whether you need to build up to your goal and don’t be afraid to ask others for help, most leisure centres run a range of coached swim sessions throughout the week to cater for all ages and abilities • Think about eating a carbohydrate rich meal at least two hours before you start your swim. If your swim is particularly long then you may wish to place an energy drink on the poolside, avoid fizzy drinks though • Conduct a warm up on the poolside before you start swimming. This could involve jogging on the spot, getting your arms moving and generally ‘limbering up.’ You’ll be getting in to the water with a better range of movement to help your technique and it’ll help to avoid injury.

Float! - Water is hundreds of times more dense than air, swimming fast is all about moving efficiently. Increasing your effort does not always result in moving faster if you’re upsetting your balance in the water. Try these tips for swimming front crawl faster: • Try to breathe off to the sides without lifting your head as you’ll make your legs sink which will slow you down.

• Practice keeping your body level in the water, look down towards the bottom as you swim and kick your legs.

• With each stroke make sure you’re pulling all the way through to your hip, you’re trying to get the maximum distance out of each pull in order to conserve energy.

Fresh Air to the Lungs Article by Helen Tempest

We featured an article from local girl Helen Tempest last year regarding her enthusiasm for raising money for causes close to her heart. Helen is, once again, on her feet, and the following article is from her explaining how you can get involved.

“This September I’m going to be doing a three-day trek through the Alps to raise money for the British Lung Foundation in memory of my Dad who sadly passed away in 2016 from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

About 10,000 people in the UK are newly diagnosed with lung disease every week, and somebody dies from lung disease every 5 minutes, I’m hoping to raise awareness to help support and fund the research that is crucial to detect early diagnosis, help find a cure and improve treatment.

I’ll be completing 46km starting at the base of Mont Blanc. On the first day I will trek 14km to Val Ferret, the second day will cover 15km to Champex, and finally ending with 19km to the finish line, Col de La Forclaz, before heading back

to Chamonix to hopefully celebrate. The whole trek will cover France, Switzerland and Italy in just three days.

I’ve always liked the idea of doing something like this, but as a keen runner I always stuck with what I knew, and what I was good at. However, losing my dad to COPD a month before the London marathon in 2016 was an emotional time for me, so crossing that finish line was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do and I was determined to do it for him.

After years of running, finishing 10k’s, half marathons, marathons, obstacles races and fun runs, I decided it was time to push myself further and aim bigger, in this case to include mountains!

Once I have my mind set on something, I do it, no questions asked. My dad always encouraged this, no matter how stupid my idea was, he would support me, and I know he will be with me in the Alps.

Ellie Jackson is not just a mother of four, but such is her commitment to her kids, she has poured her time and resources to reach 40,000 other children in Cornwall with her campaigning anti pollution message.

She has authored three children’s books and teaching resources that feature true stories about the problems of ocean plastic. Illustrated by Launceston artist Laura Callwood and Australian

Liz Oldmeadow, the stories follow three well loved animals as they encounter plastic bags, balloons and fishing nets.

Ellie lives in Looe, with her husband and children, and works full-time as a writer and campaigner. She has a degree in environmental science and taught geography for six years prior to starting her family.

Her books are part of a “books into schools” scheme operating so far in Pembrokeshire, East Sussex, Nottingham, Cardiff and Aberdeen and have reached over 500,000 children.

Schools in Cornwall are in for a treat as an anonymous local donor has funded books into all Saltash, Torpoint and Rame Peninsula primary schools reaching over 3,000 children. The donor explained that their family was having a no present Christmas and wished to donate to a good cause. As they explained, combatting plastic pollution and encouraging a love of reading was an obvious choice!

They also wanted to support the fantastic work of local groups, Saltash Environmental Action and Rame Peninsula Beach Care to help protect our beautiful environment and wildlife for future generations.

Shojiro Frank - SEA volunteer – thinks the books in schools will really help, “These stories remind us how people can easily destroy our nature and creatures. We have to think about how our actions affect our environment.

We have to stop bad customs and bad habits that cause environmental issues. Children learn from Ellie’s books and hopefully, say no to plastics as much as possible.”

Ellie says, “I hope these books are the catalyst for the whole community to get behind campaigns such as Plastic Free Communities run by Surfers Against Sewage, Final Straw Cornwall and to get involved in Two Minute Beach Cleans or litter picks. Every single time that we pick up plastic or choose reusable over disposable we are helping to preserve our beautiful fragile environment and wildlife.”

glow beauty more than skin deep

First impressions rarely give the whole picture. When I first met Lisa of Glow Salon, I had no idea that home to her and partner James Avery included horses, dogs, goats, chickens and even pigs in a small holding just under Kit Hill in Harrowbarrow.

Lisa looks every inch the professional beautician, groomed to perfection, and its lovely to imagine her laughing in her wellies as her sow in heat chases her partner around the pigpen.

And being an animal lover its second nature to her to use products that are cruelty free and as vegan as possible.

James and Lisa are obviously no strangers to a

challenge, and when the opportunity came to expand the successful salon Lisa has run for 11 years in Fore Street, they took the plunge.

Originally Lisa bought what was the Saltash Tanning Studio (or Gloria’s Tanning Studio for those with long memories) and expanded the business to include creative nails, microdermabrasion, facials, waxing and massage to name but a few.

As the salon’s reputation grew and the number of treatments the team became trained to offer expanded, it was clear that they needed more space. “I was working 12 hours a day in the salon to fit

community news around other appointments” explained Lisa, who specialises in enhancing beautiful eyelashes and eyebrows.

So, the plunge happened, and Lisa and James invested in leasing an additional property just a few doors down from the original salon.

First impressions apply to buildings as well as people and they soon discovered there was a tonne of additional work to refurbish it as a serene and light filled place, including replacing all the ceiling joists to make sure the inhabitants of the flat above were safe.

However, they have managed to bring about a spectacular transformation, enabling an old building to be repurposed.

Both salons work from one diary system and clients can easily move between the two to take full advantage of the private rooms in the original salon and the extra light and space in the new premises for detailed lash and eyebrow work and professional make up.

Lisa has also been granted a licence to offer a refined selection of gins, wine and prosecco, and already has lots of enquiries for a “girls’ night in” with a difference, as well as birthdays, baby showers, wedding parties etc. A drink comes included in the treatment price, and guests can buy their own from the bar.

STEPPING OUT IN STYLE Saltash hosted a fundraising fashion show on March 21 on behalf of CLIC Sargent.

As a regular volunteer in CLIC Sargent’s charity shop on Fore Street, Dorothy Tee knows what makes a great outfit, and who best to model it.

And, as a member of the Plymouth Fundraising group for this fantastic charity, she also had the expertise to put on a great event that lit up the evening at Saltash Social Club.

Dorothy contacted shopaholicfashionshow.com, which is based in Ivybridge. It offers a wide range of mainly high street clothes at massive savings of the RRP’s with discounts of between 40 and 70%.

All stock is available to try on and purchase on the night. The company also provides a compere, music and sound system, and a raffle prize.

Funds were raised by selling tickets (over 65

people attended the night in Saltash) and running a raffle and cake sale at the event. This was a fashion show for real people who like to eat!

The models were volunteers from the Fore Street Shop as well as family members. Gill, Mandy, Mica, Karen, Lorna, Fran, Liz and Lyndsey all owned the catwalk as if they had been modelling all their lives.

The evening was a great success. Refreshments were served with tea and coffee donated by the ladies, and raffle prizes donated by local businesses and staff members.

Dorothy was delighted, explaining, “We raised £902.52 for CLIC Sargent. That amount would keep a family in one of the CLIC houses in Bristol for one month to be near the hospital while their child was having cancer treatment.”

Devon and Cornwall Police have two Cyber Protect Officers, who travel up and down the South West providing free Cyber Crime presentations and training sessions to businesses, organisations and community groups.

Laura Cowie is based in Devon and has been in the Cyber Protect role since January 2017 after moving from her previous post within the South West Counter Terrorism Unit. She is a strong advocate of raising awareness of the growing threat of Cyber Crime and has been helping organisations and businesses do this across Devon and Cornwall for the past two years.

Grahame Mace is based in Cornwall and has recently joined the team. He brings a vast range of knowledge with him from his previous post as Detective Inspector in the City of London Police. community news Have you ever felt that you were wasted in your current employment? Some enlightened employers understand that your day to day may not be the most exciting and work hard to engage their employees in all kinds of interesting ways.

The Co-op runs a scheme for its employees to trial an alternative career known as Warehouse to Wheels, or in the case of Steve Tossell, Store to Wheels.

Steve was working in the Co-op, in Fore Street, Saltash, when he felt inspired to try something a little different. The Store to Wheels scheme allowed him to experience a week in the life of a driver to see if this was a career path he’d like to follow.

It turns out he really enjoyed his week, booked his medical and applied for his licence to drive HGV’s.

Our area is lucky enough to have its own Driver Assessor based at the busy Co-op Food Distribution Warehouse in Plympton. The Centre operates 24 hours every day from a huge warehouse with deliveries timed to perfection to allow goods to be off loaded and then redistributed across the South West, all the way to the Isles of Scilly on a daily basis.

Adam Griffiths, who is the only Co-op employee who coaches new drivers himself, takes colleagues like Steve through all of their tests, including moving from class two drivers to class one.

Steve passed his theory, hazard perception, CPC, medical and has his test booked for 1 May. Adam, who is also a Saltash resident, has now begun training Steve. Starting with the familiarization of the vehicle in the compound – these lorries are truly enormous - then driving around the compound to get used to being up high, using the mirrors, the size of the steering wheel etc.

Steve has now ventured out onto less populated roads before Adam begins introducing test routes.

Finally, he needs to practise manoeuvring around the compound which requires a huge amount of precision, before finally taking the test in May. Once Steve has passed, he will double up with another driver to learn the routes and delivery positions at as many stores as possible before venturing out on his own in June.

Magistrates’ Court Mock Trials Competition

On Saturday 16th March a team of twelve Year Eight and Year Nine students from saltash.net, participated in the Young Citizens Mock Trials competition. The competition was held in one of the real court rooms in Plymouth’s Magistrates’ Court. The team had to provide a prosecution and a defence for a specifically written case for the round.

Some members of the team were also magistrates, court staff and witnesses. In the Devon local heat, Saltash competed against Liskeard, and the competition consisted of two rounds.

During the first round, saltash.net took on the prosecution side of the case, with Liskeard on the defence. After the court proceedings, the magistrates (3 from Liskeard, 3 from Saltash and 1 official magistrate from the court), discussed whether they thought the charged person was guilty or not guilty. For the second round the roles were reversed with Liskeard prosecuting and Saltash as defence. The

competition was judged by three other Magistrates from the court. After the two rounds, the four magistrates held a question and answers session for the parents, teachers and students.

Overall, the day gave the students an amazing opportunity to experience first-hand how a court functions and to try out the different roles involved. The event gave a unique chance to explore a new area of work, in a way they would not be able to in a classroom. Mrs Gallie, who ran the trip, stated ‘The students were absolutely incredible. Every member of the team put so much effort into preparing for the competition. The dedication, commitment and courage they displayed as a team was really admirable, and we look forward to returning to the competition next year.’ After, practising for over a month, the students were proud to be the first team to represent saltash.net in this competition, achieving second place in their local heat.

MESSING UP AT WESLEY Article by Margaret Holley

On the first Saturday of each month between 4pm and 6.30pm, Messy Church takes place at Saltash Wesley Methodist Church.

Youngsters and parents make their way down to the Sports Hall where lots of Christian theme-based activities are on offer.

Leader, Chris Clark the Childrens and Families Worker at Wesley with helpers to give guidance provide plenty of opportunity to make cards, get sticky fingers from making and decorating sweets and cakes, take part in craft work, games. There are sports activities and science experiments geared for older ones and teenagers.

Little ones have the opportunity to play in the coffee bar area where Mums, Dads, Grandparents are able to have a tea or coffee and a chance to chat to friends or share problems with the helpers.

At 5pm a ten minute get together in the church is led by Chris Clark or Rev. Jonathan Budd. this

provides an opportunity for everyone to listen to a round up of the topic of the day by watching a video, listening to a story and joining in with a good sing song.

Supper is served at 5.30 pm when families, friends and helpers come together over a meal to share news and catch up with each other.

YOUR ONE STOP FACILITY FOR MULTI SPORTS AND FITNESS UNDER ONE ROOF Saltash Amateur Boxing Club (SABC) has operated out of The Core Youth Project in the old K3 and K2 Building for the past ten years. The club provides low cost affordable boxing and is a non-profit making organisation run entirely by volunteers. Founded in 2008 in partnership with

Devon & Cornwall Police it is run by former Royal Marine, Micky Northfield MBE and is for ages 11 upwards (no upper age limit) for anybody who wishes to box or learn to box.

The club however was offered an exciting opportunity to affiliate to the new Saltash Sport,

community news Leisure and Active Lifestyle organisation and become a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC).

A Saltash CASC is the vision of Lee Russell the owner of Jack’s Gym in Saltash. Lee asked SABC to affiliate with them in this new venture to bring boxing and all aspects of fitness under one roof in Saltash. Jumpin Jack’s the name of the new venture gives parents an opportunity to train whilst their youngster(s) can take part in their own personalised exercise all under one roof.

Saltash ABC moved into the new premises in early September 2018 and the coaching team is led

by Owen Pearce a well-known local boxer who as SABC head coach is assisted by former Army Boxers, Luke Kinsman, Tom Main and Big John McKinty and they will eventually joined by two additional coaches. This experienced team plan to take boxing in Saltash to the higher level last seen over 25 years ago. Big John McKinty is also a dual international boxer, former number one in the UK and holder of a Commonwealth Games Silver Medal, as well as being The Chairman of SABC. All coaches are ABA Trained, have in date First Aid Qualifications and are Enhanced DBS security vetted to work with children and young people.

SABC sessions occur on Tuesdays and Thursday from 7 – 8:30 pm.

In these sketches and paintings, Jill sets out to explore “how covering up the mouth, eyes or ears made the viewer feel. Often just a mild adjustment, the glimpse of an eye appearing through the slightly open fingers of a hand covering one or both eyes, changes the feel of the image completely.”

Coughman as an inspirational art teacher at Saltash College from 1998 to 2004. This selection, from her most recent body of work reflects not only her sure technical expertise and experience but also a powerful, emotional depth.

The idea of concealing the face is simple, a bit of every-day observation, something we all do, whether pondering, gasping, whispering, laughing, crying or just resting. But these are not every-day pretty pictures. Observations can feel uncomfortable.

Jill became interested in “how concealing a part of the face can change how we perceive that person. Are they protecting themselves or hiding? How does it affect the viewer if the person they are looking at, or talking to, has their eyes covered or closed? What happens if they are covering up their ears?”

Here are two of Jill's evocative sketches. The exhibition also includes fully developed paintings, intense, enigmatic, perhaps uneasy; pictures to spend time with, to look at again, pictures, perhaps, to throw light on our own feelings and behaviours.

pemberton Cornwall Open Studios happens annually at this time of year and Teresa Pemberton is opening her studio this year to invite you to look at an exhibition of her paintings and to see her working space. She will be happy to answer questions on what motivates her and how she deals with the technique of oil painting.

Teresa gained a fine art degree at the University of Hertfordshire in 1996 and relocated to Cornwall in 2006. She has exhibited her work all over the country as well as internationally. She has her work in a few local galleries such as Artmill in Plymouth, the Brownston Gallery in Modbury and Gallery Tresco in the Isles of Scilly.

While walking the coast paths and moorlands of the South West she has filled her sketchbooks with thousands of drawings. These act as reminders of what she has seen but once back in the studio her imagination takes over and her paintings of seascape and landscape develop into compelling canvases of emotions, movement, light and colour. Her painting is as much about the texture and colour of the paint on the surface as about the place that inspired them.

Living by the Lynher estuary she can explore the muddy shores and the changing skies of the river.

The painting “Tide Lines� captures the merging of river and sky on a subdued evening but then also contains a boat in the foreground which with its contrasting bright colour livens up the feeling of being down by the shore. She also loves gardens, flowers and ponds as well as the archeology found on Dartmoor.

LIFE’s TOO SHORT TO DRINK BAD WINE

Anyone who enjoys the joys of the grape can identify with this sentiment…. But what is bad wine; what are wine faults; and what should we do when served a bad bottle or glass…

Well first and foremost no one should suffer a wine that is not giving pleasure. Let the bar/ restaurant staff know that you are not enjoying it, and a good establishment will change it for you. Either for a new bottle / glass of the same if it is out of condition or for an alternative if they believe your wine is not faulty.

At Just Be we get asked about wine faults and how to detect them… this is by no means a straightforward subject as faults can be minor/ subtle or major and obvious. But here’s a look at four of the most common wine faults.

• Oxidised Wine Sadly the most common fault in ‘wine by the glass’. All too often wine is kept open for too long. After 2/3 days oxygen will kill the fruit in an opened bottle giving the wine a dull colour and aroma, with vinegary/ caramelised notes.

Send it back immediately! Ask the establishment when it was opened or suggest it is compared to a newly opened bottle… the difference can be staggering!

• Cork Taint (Corked!)

Nothing to do with bits of cork in the wine, which are harmless. Cork taint is caused by the presence of bacteria (Trichloroanisole – TCA), which, reacts with the cork and gives musty, dull, wet dog, cardboard notes, which are more dominant than the fruit. Not what you ordered – send it back!

• Sulphur Sulphur is used in small quantities to protect and preserve the wine.

But if there is too much in the bottle it will give aromas of rotten eggs, burnt rubber or struck match. Often these will reduce after a short time in glass or with decanting. But, if they don’t – send it back!

• Secondary Fermentation Residual sugar in a still wine can cause a secondary fermentation, resulting in a small amount of bubbles and fizz on the tongue. Oddly enough it may be intended by the wine maker (in some rare instances) but mostly it will be a fault. If it doesn’t go away with swirling and shaking and if you find it undesirable… send it back!

Sometimes you just know the wine is not how you want it to be. Don’t be shy! Any retailer, restaurant or bar serving wine should care about your enjoyment of this beautiful drink….. so ask them to check it, and never suffer a wine that is not enjoyable. Life is too short!

THE STATE OF PLAY Much is said about the decline of mediumsized music venues in and around Plymouth and it’s probably fair to say that it’s not a pretty picture, with seemingly every news report lamenting the impending demise of accessible and affordable gigs for the average music fan.

Equally, you’d also think that ‘real music’ is in terminal decline and that we are all starving on a diet of force-fed, banal, studio-cooked gruel, dished out by popular broadcasters as a flavourless substitute for the glory days of classic rock.

Except that much of it isn’t true and most of the above is a superficial view, concealing a brilliant, vibrant and creative force of young musicians and some great local music hotspots that are prepared to serve a rich bill of fare for the more discerning.

One such venue has caught everyone by surprise in the Plymouth area, suddenly appearing on the touring circuit of some of the UK’s most pre-eminent rock and indie bands, as well as staging a healthy representation of some of the greats from the past

few decades. It gets more interesting again when you understand that no less than Pete Townshend of THE WHO and Brian Johnson of AC/DC are both active supporters of this venue, as was the late Lemmy of HAWKWIND and MOTORHEAD fame.

These members of ‘rock royalty’ have all been seen in and out of the venue over the years and have been very vocal about its virtues. With an impressively large stage, world-class recording studio (largely equipped by Pete Townshend), state of the art live sound mixing, superb lighting tech from the likes of ALLEN & HEATH, and in-house kit from MARSHALL, ASTON MICROPHONES, GENELEC, FOCUSRITE amongst many others, you may wonder why you haven’t heard of this thriving 250-capacity live music spot. That’s because, surprisingly, it’s a youth club called LIVEWIRE. Tucked away in an anonymous looking building beneath the Tamar bridges and set against the stunning backdrop of Saltash Waterside, LIVEWIRE is an independent charity with a 70-year history.

MUSIC SCENE Taken in the direction of musical Häxan activity 21 years ago by Andy and Julie Rance, its mission is offering support to young people through music and traditional youth work, helping steer them through the trials and tribulations of growing up. It has nurtured and produced bands like the nationally acclaimed HAUNT THE WOODS and THE OUTLANDERS, as well as training a host of other musicians and technical specialists who are out there in the business making a good living. It’s been a life saver for many.

Last year LIVEWIRE was catapulted into the big time as a UK circuit venue for significant young bands, after suffering a near disaster at the hands of a selfstyled local promoter. After disappearing with an attack of cold feet, he left LIVEWIRE and the band he’d booked (BAD TOUCH) on their own.

With ticket sales of just a couple of dozen and just three weeks before the gig was scheduled, BAD TOUCH, their management, their PR manager, NWOCR (NEW WAVE OF CLASSIC ROCK) and LIVEWIRE’S own personnel and marketing, forged an alliance and rescued the event, selling it out. On the night, charismatic BAD TOUCH front man, Stevie Westwood, announced to a good natured, noisy and enthusiastic full-house, that it was the best gig of their UK tour – and he meant it.

This near disaster, followed by the almost miraculous success of the BAD TOUCH gig, caused a ripple through the UK music community that spread

with unforeseen consequences – NWOCR took LIVEWIRE under its wing and through their huge influence and respect within the UK classic rock scene, worked with the venue to stage an ambitious follow-up - a five band extravaganza held on March 16th, featuring CIRCLE OF CROWS, ETHYRFIELD, HÄXAN, SKAM and headliners, KING CREATURE, with Pete K. Mally rather brilliantly filling the role of MC. So enthused were the bands and Pete with the aims of LIVEWIRE, they expressed a desire to drive from all over the UK and perform for fuel money alone, enabling NWOCR and LIVEWIRE to sell the venue out and raise more money in a single event than any other in their many years of operation.

Whatever the future holds for LIVEWIRE, one thing for certain is that it’s going to be a great ride for the local young people who make up its members, working with and alongside major acts who’ll come right to their door. The collaboration with NWOCR is growing from strength to strength and another ambitious gig is scheduled for October 5th 2019 – three major acts are already signed up.

For the gig lovers of Plymouth and surrounding areas, the prospect of a great night out, watching burgeoning bands in a good sized but intimate venue has never been better or brighter. It’s reminiscent of the joyous VAN DIKE days, which saw the likes of a youthful LED ZEPPELIN and PINK FLOYD beating a path to the South West.

Port Eliot Dog Festival Returns The infamous Port Eliot Dog Festival is returning to the Port Eliot Estate in Saltash on Saturday 25th May and dog lovers are encouraged to save the date.

The dog festival has become an annual event at Port Eliot and sees families with their four-legged friends coming from far and wide to enjoy the day.

Highlights of the event always include the dog show which will have a range of different classes as well as Roo’s Whippet Tea Party. For just one day the dogs are allowed to eat off the table as whippets are served, and wolf down, a selection of dog friendly afternoon tea delights. Also on the day there will be the chance for dogs to have a go at agility and flyball and for visitors to browse stalls selling dog related goods and refreshments.

The whole event is put on in support of local children’s charity Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) which has to raise around £3 million a year to run its Little Harbour children’s hospice in St Austell. Little Harbour offers

respite breaks to around 130 children and their families from across Cornwall and Plymouth and is also on hand to provide end of life care and bereavement support.

Zoe Partridge, Community Fundraiser for CHSW would like to get as many people to this event as possible. “Our job as fundraisers never stops, we are always out and about spreading the word about the charity, the support we offer to the children and their families and what that means to them. However, we cannot continue to provide this without donations, so events such as this are a great way of anyone with a love of dogs to come along and enjoy all we have on offer and by doing this you will be helping us to provide vital care and support.”

Visiting artists in their studio spaces is a rare treat. Not only do you get to meet them and learn about techniques and inspiration, but you get a real feel of how a work of art comes about by seeing the space.

Open Studios Cornwall is now in its fifteenth year and runs from May 25 to June 2. You can follow the guide found at openstudioscornwall.co.uk, or pick up a printed version and follow the orange Os to discover unique hideaway studios within

the Cornish landscape. Many studios are family friendly offering adults and children the chance to ask questions and learn techniques. You can use the guide to spend an enjoyable few days travelling around Cornwall seeking out these hidden stars - with almost 300 artists in total featured on the website.
