You would have to look hard to find a similar sized town that delivers so much for its residents, and thanks must go to all those amazing volunteers that do so much in the background, as well as those who take to the stage to entertain the rest of us.

Kaye has lived in Saltash for most of her life, having brought up two daughters, Florence (21) who is graduating from Chichester University this year in Musical Theatre and Rose (18), currently studying English with Publishing at Plymouth University. She co-runs ESSA Children’s Drama in Saltash (now in its tenth year), and works as a Customer Care/Student Accommodation Lettings Manager, which she finds very rewarding. She is always on the look out for interesting news and events in the area.

Everyone is looking forward to the May Fair on May 5 this year. As always, the event offers a huge selection of fun for all the family.

This year they are holding a raffle to win a great cash prize of £500 to raise much needed funds for this fortieth anniversary of the annual extravaganza. The cash prize has been sponsored

by UK Tech Computer Services and NTC Kitchens and Bedrooms. Other sponsors include local businesses and Cornwall Council; however, there is, as usual with events like these, a shortfall to cover. Please show your support by buying a ticket or putting some change in the collection buckets on the day. All monies raised go towards the cost of putting on the event.

The usual road closures will be in place between 6am and 8pm to ensure a safe and vibrant atmosphere for visitors to the town and local people alike. Check out Saltash May Fair on Facebook for updates.

catering competition Two local catering students are celebrating after winning medals at the Major Series International Final. Professional Cookery students from Cornwall College Saltash, Charlie Walter and Chloe Spear both triumphed, coming away with a bronze medal each in the International cooking competition held as part of the annual Hotelympia event held in the Excel Centre in London. The event is one of the biggest hospitality competitions in the country, so well done Charlie and Chloe.

turning 50 Transport Jane is marking her special day by leaping out of a plane to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West. A keen runner with the Tamar Trotters, Jane clearly likes a physical challenge, and although this is a tandem jump, her adrenaline levels will be high on May 19 when she experiences sky diving over the Cornish coast.

Jane explained, “I heard about the Children’s Hospice from my husband Dave who works as maintenance man at Greenwich Place in Saltash, as they support this charity. I was amazed to learn it costs over £2million a year to provide the specialist care the Hospice offers, so I decided to ask friends and family to donate rather than give me presents for my birthday. The Saltash branch of Howdens have given a very generous donation via my online giving site, for which I’m very grateful.

According to Cornwall Council there is a whopping £1million pot of money to improve cycleways and walking routes in Saltash. They are keen to hear the views of local people and if you want more clout to your voice, the Plymouth Cycling Campaign is there to help. They have recently worked with planners and Sustrans on the Looe to Cremyll route and although they don’t always agree on every Sustrans policy / proposal they share the same ambition.

The next PCyC meeting is on Tues May 15 at 7pm in the Plymouth University Babbage Building. You can get in touch with the Plymouth Cycle Campaign on Facebook to let them know you are coming.

This season’s exhibition will be honouring Major General William Penn-Symons from Hatt who served and died during the Boer War and Nurse Snell-Rundle who also served during that period.

The exhibition is now open until the end of September on Wednesday, Thursday from 2pm to 4pm and on Saturday from 10am to 12 noon.

The Tamar Protection Society who maintain the Museum are delighted to hear that descendants of the Major General will be coming during the season to visit.

HAVE YOUR SAY You may remember back in 2015 a survey came through your door asking you what Saltash meant to you and how could it change to improve the lives of its inhabitants. It was the first stage in the process of creating a Neighbourhood Plan.

The Neighbourhood plan aims to put the way Saltash develops into the hands of the people of Saltash, hence the community engagement survey coming through your door.

Well, three years (and many, many meetings) later and the Neighbourhood Plan team have entered the data, seen your opinions on your town, and done the best that they can to translate that into a Neighbourhood Plan for Saltash.

Some of the things that you requested were; More land for recreation, helping businesses grow and supply better jobs, build on the sense of community

that already exists in Saltash, and ensure that new housing caters for the community needs. Not all of the things that you requested are listed here, the list would be too long! But, you can see it in the consultation draft of the Neighbourhood Plan at www.plan4saltash.co.uk. (hard copies will be available soon).

The Neighbourhood Plan is going to public consultation in the next few months and we want to know what you think.

That is where we need you, the public to come and have your say. The Neighbourhood Plan Team will have a stall at the May Fair and Saltash Regatta. They will also be having drop in sessions in a variety of places.

Sapooni’s story began over 14 years ago when Jo and her family went on holiday to Cyprus, and returned with a souvenir; a bar of olive oil soap.

This soap turned out to be quite awful; it was grey, had no fragrance, wouldn’t lather, and turned into a mushy, slimy mess in the shower. Jo decided she could do better and went on courses to learn the art of soap-making.

When the family moved to Cyprus, she started making very special olive oil soaps using virgin olive oil collected from Agabrios at the local olive mill - pressed from the olives grown around her home on

SMALL CHANGES, BIG DIFFERENCES

First set up in 2007 by Marianne Beale and Heather Gynn, Saltash Environmental Action (SEA) continues to make a conscious effort to clean up our planet!

SEA was set up by local volunteers that thought action needed to be taken to make Saltash greener and to change our mind-set towards consumerism.

Over the years, SEA has educated people about eco-friendly alternatives, encouraged consumers to buy locally-sourced produce and embarked upon ways to reduce waste and litter. The group promotes and abides by the motto “REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE� as this is key to preventing unnecessary waste. SEA asks people to think more carefully before heading for the bin. One of the worst contributors to our waste issue are singleuse containers such as plastic bottles that are easy and convenient for consumers, but conceal

COMMUNITY NEWS a dark truth. With the town’s coastal position, litter, in particular, plastic can end up in the sea and have disastrous effects on marine life. In recent news, the problem of plastic in oceans has become a topical issue and the public are becoming mindful of the damaging effects of humans, but more needs to be done to change our detrimental habits and prevent the damage worsening. Next time think about if you really need to buy that bottle of water or instead swap to a re-usable one, a minor change for a major impact.

Apart from leading a movement away from plastic, SEA puts on environmental films, organises monthly litter pick-ups (which are held on the 4th

BRINGING THE CHURCH TO YOU

You may have heard someone say ‘Come to Church’, but what about if the Church came to you? Here at Saltash Baptist that is exactly what we are starting to do.

We have started two brand new initiatives where we want to bring different aspects of our community to the wider community.

Here4U is a weekly listening post that will be in 4 Fore Street each Monday from 10:30am, people from the church will be in the shop ready to listen to anyone who wants to chat or just in need of some company.

We will also have a prayer tree there if people want to come and put a prayer on a tree or just to find out

more about what the church is doing and what we believe. Anyone is welcome and it would be good to hear from you.

Another way in which we are bringing the church to you is through ‘Prayer Station’, on a Saturday morning.

From 10am a small team of people will be located in Fore Street with a chalkboard and a listening ear. We are encouraging people to come and write a prayer on the board or to be prayed for, whatever suits you best. These will then be prayed for on a Sunday morning as part of our service.

A NEW DAWN OPENS AT SALTASH HERITAGE MUSEUM

Stepping into Saltash Heritage Museum is like stepping into the Tardis.

It might look small on the outside, but the inside is buzzing with child friendly, interesting displays, including a life sized model of what it would have looked and felt like in a World War One Trench.

“A New Dawn” exhibition was opened recently by the Mayor and two Royal Marines. If you have not yet dragged the kids away from their screens to investigate this new exhibition, then you have a treat awaiting you.

And if you don’t have the luxury of children to accompany you to see history through their eyes, or if you fancy a return visit alone to be able to actually read the detailed descriptions, then the museum is open at various times of the day, when the enthusiasm of children is safely tucked away in school!

The hard working team of volunteers at Saltash Heritage Museum are to be congratulated on curating yet another excellent exhibition that clearly shows Saltash’s place in the wider world, using our unique local history to comment on the immense political, social and environmental challenges that faced our forefathers in 1918 and beyond.

The exhibition runs till November, when the World War One trench will be dismantled, and a Service of Remembrance held to mark the end to such a devastating part of our past.

Rosalie Wyatt has said that “the process of seeing, imagining and drawing or painting is an end in itself and matters more to me than individual outcomes.”

This may come as a surprise to those of us who are more used to looking at paintings than making them. Surely the artist wants, above all, the final piece of work to be successful, liked by others, perhaps good enough that someone may buy it.

But Rosalie sees things from an artist’s point of view, a view that I’ve heard many artists express. The satisfaction is in the making, in the process and, for figurative artists, that is in the seeing.

Through looking that carefully, one can learn more about the subject than purely glancing at it, which – let’s be honest – is what most of us do most of the time.

Next time we look at a figurative painting, we might ask ourselves what it is that the artist has seen, noticed, learned, tried to capture and convey.
