Goodbye, hello

and welcome...

We’re presenting this month’s issue with a few mixed emotions!

Firstly, there is the Goodbye. Very sadly we say Goodbye to Jenny who has pioneered this work from the outset, and although will be much missed from our working lives, I am sure we will still see her supporting all the community activity that she has endeavoured to promote so well through Love Saltash.

Here’s Jenny’s Goodbye.

I started Love Saltash in 2014 to tell only positive and inspiring stories about our buzzing waterside town. Encouraging involvement in activities to help our community and businesses grow and flourish was also at the heart of the magazine. I have always been passionate about providing a voice and a platform for people of all ages in society who, traditionally in local publishing, are ‘reported on’ rather than being able to take ownership of what they say and how they say it.

I set up community workshops to create the first content for Love Saltash… for example, at saltash.net working with the students, at a care home bringing residents and Livewire young people together to discuss

their favourite music, and running Saltash-themed writing competitions. I also spent time working out new ways to encourage local shopping and support of Saltash businesses.

Connecting people and celebrating positive local stories and successes has been the vital thread running through all Love Saltash content. It continues to do so now, and I am incredibly grateful to the wonderful community-minded local Cornerstone Vision team who have helped me to manage a rapidly growing publication that became more than I could handle by myself working out of my living room!

I have worked particularly closely with the lovely Karen over the last year, exploring ways that Love Saltash can be on a solid footing for the future whilst staying true to its original ethos and values. We have reached the point where Love Saltash is sustainable and has grown in even more positive directions – which I am thrilled about! I am personally ready to explore new career opportunities in the knowledge that the project I have put my heart and soul in to is in the safest hands imaginable.

In 2016 the new committee took the May Fair back to the town and back to its community roots. After two years with overwhelming positive feedback from residents, businesses, exhibitors and the wider community it was decided that it will remain in the town for 2018.

Both the 2016 and 2017 event had an estimated footfall of around 4,500 throughout the whole day over Fore Street, Victoria Gardens and Longstone Park. The committee will hope to replicate these footfall numbers by once again offering a full day of non-stop entertainment.

They would love to see you there – May 5 2018, starting from 2018. Day starts at 10am.

CORNWALL’s FIRST EVER INFLATABLE THEME PARK

Boasting some of the South West’s best bouncy castle and slides, Cornwall’s first ever inflatable theme park will be putting on a great value event over the Easter weekend at St Mellion’s car boot field. For only £5.99 per child, they will

have unlimited access to eight large inflatables.

Micky and Minnie Mouse will also be popping by to meet the children and will be offering free face painting for every child. Food and drink will be available on site and plenty of parking too. Sessions will run for two hours from 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm. Wristbands are available on the day, so best come a little early to make sure you get yours!

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ANN? Eagle eyed readers may have noticed the disappearance of Ann Glanville who has been surveying Fore Street with her stony features since September 2013.

Ann’s remarkable life was fashioned by considerable hardship. Born in 1706, she and her husband both worked on the river as water carriers. At one stage - her husband being too ill to work and Ann having numerous children to feed (she had 14 babies in total!) – meant that she was the sole breadwinner, carrying heavy loads in her boat rowing single handed for miles up and down the river each day.

No wonder she was renowned as a champion rower, the Saltash women’s team she led was never defeated by a female team, and rarely defeated by male teams in Britain or in Europe.

Her testimony to the power of a woman will be back on show shortly once repairs have been made, probably at a destination overlooking the river she would have known so well.

The debate continues whether there should be new retail development on the site of the former Suzuki salesroom on Gilston Road at Carkeel.

Home Bargains, Food Warehouse by Iceland, McDonald’s and Costa drive-throughs are confirmed tenants on the plans submitted by Quora Ltd, a mixed-use developer who have created similar sites throughout the country.

Saltash Town Council is against the scheme in its present form citing traffic concerns, queuing vehicles, the impact on the town centre, number of parking spaces, landscaping and the need for a footbridge. It is lobbying for improvements to be made.

In a letter to Cornwall Council, a representative of Peacock and Smith, agent for Quora, said: ‘Benefits include the generation of 165 jobs, and 200 additional jobs during the construction phase. The proposals represent a significant investment in the local area amounting to £13m.

‘The application site has been specifically designed so that the drive through lane takes access from the circulatory aisle and not the main aisle…this removes any potential blocking back or driver confusion.’

Quora says it will provide a Section 106 community benefit contribution of £196,000 to offset the impact on the town centre and says the new development will ‘claw back’ shoppers

FOOTBALL CLUB Saltash RFC are through to the next round of the RFC Senior Vase after a 41-27 win over Withycombe on Saturday 17 February. As the Devon and Cornwall champions, they will be facing Gordano RFC, who top the Somerset 1 League.

The Cornish side, started the better, with a try just after the 11 minute mark, though this lead was very quickly cut back down as Withycombe responded with a try of their own. The match then continued in a close fashion until a quick double from Saltash, meant that they went into the break with a comfortable 26-8 lead.

A converted try and penalty added a further 10 points to the Saltash cause. Withycombe were not yet out of the contest as a reply of three of their own tries tested the nerves of the Saltash fans, who would go home happy after a terrific match.

ST PIRAN’S DAY

ST PIRAN’S DAY

Here’s hoping a healthy dose of Cornish Nationalism will be celebrated on March 5, St Piran’s Day. Legend tells us how Piran, originating from Ireland and know there as ‘Ciran’ , was cast to sea tied to a millstone on the order of the Irish King who was suspicious of Piran’s miraculous powers. Although the sea was treacherous Piran survived, the stormy seas calming as he floated on the millstone until he reached the shores of Cornwall.

His first disciples were said to be a badger, a fox and a bear, which is perhaps connected to his other well-known attribute – that he liked a drink!

Piran is perhaps most famous for his accidental discovery of tin, when a blackstone on his fireplace got so hot that a white liquid leaked out; the first tin smelting. It was this discovery that earned Piran the title Patron Saint of ‘Tinners’.

It was this discovery that also formed the basis of the Cornish flag, the white-hot tin on the black of the ore.

There will be a Grand St Piran’s Concert with the Burraton Male Voice Choir, Burraton Boys and special guests at Saltash Wesley Methodist Church at 7pm on March 5. Admission is adults £5 children free (includes Cornish supper). Tickets available on the door. All proceeds to “Little Things & Co” the baby bereavement charity.

The Who’d Have Thought It Inn in St Dominick will also be celebrating St Pirans Day with a traditional Shout of Cornish songs and shanties, led by the wonderful voices of Shout Kernow. There’ll be plenty of Cornish ale and pasties to keep everyone fed and watered. They will be singing Trelawny alongside pubs across Cornwall at 9pm. Always a fantastic evening and a Who’d tradition.

WHO KNEW SCHOOL COULD BE SO MUCH FUN?!

Fifteen lucky saltash.net Year 7 students were chosen to take part in an adventurous residential trip aimed at improving their analytical English reading skills. On Monday 15 January the group, along with Miss Halliday and Mr Hodson, travelled up to Bideford to spend three days at the wonderful Skern Lodge.

On the first day the pupils split into two groups and were faced with the challenge of a group assault course. They needed to focus and communicate with each other in order to complete the course.

Their brilliant instructors, Alex and Russel, helped support us all the way round and both groups managed to complete every element of the course.

Students then took part in archery, which helped

them when thinking about the analysis of ‘The Hunger Games’, which they had completed before leaving school.

The second day started with a rafting trip that led into Bideford and involved a rather chilly play in the water!

The first lesson at Skern Lodge saw the pupils use the experience of rafting to help analyse the message of the poem ‘A River’s Story’.

Students faced the biggest challenge of the trip in the afternoon: tunnels. This involved crawling through extremely tight spaces in the pitch dark, with many confronting fears of darkness and claustrophobia, but bravely still giving it a go. With support from each other, all managed to successfully complete the task. The

STUDENT NEWS emotions of this experience really helped in the lesson, when looking at the tone created by J.K. Rowling in describing ‘The Chamber of Secrets.’

The final day saw students take part in a coastal traverse round Westward Ho, facing some extreme weather and tricky scrambles across the rock. This experience helped with analysis of Joe Simpson’s ‘Touching the Void’ back in the

classroom and all managed to show incredible progress in their analysis.

This trip was a really fun experience that primarily helped build the confidence of all involved. They were a real asset to our school and made Miss Halliday and Mr Hodson very proud. The students will now be able to apply these skills to their lifelong learning journey.

SALTASH.NET YEAR 8 EXPERIENCE SCIENCE SHOWCASE at PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY Saltash.net students had an amazing morning at the Science showcase at Plymouth University, experiencing all things science and technology.

As part of the Plymouth University Children’s passport scheme, saltash.net was invited to bring 50 students along to the University; 50 Year 8 students were the lucky chosen ones.

They sampled a range of activities within the showcase tent, including Segways, mini robots, giant bubbles finger identification, and eye recognition. They thoroughly enjoyed all of the stands they visited. It was lovely to see saltash.net students grow in confidence throughout the morning and they certainly were

inspired by what they saw. They also had the opportunity to ask University students questions.

All students involved were a pleasure to take and saltash. net looks forward to their next visit.

A main issue raised by the group was the lack of bins, with only a single bin being present at the top of the green.

Would extra bins prevent unnecessary littering? Or is it just sheer carelessness of individuals?

Other areas of Saltash have similar issues, with Saltmill being one of the most problematic. Not only does littering reduce the aesthetics of Saltash, damage to the ecosystem can occur; effecting local wildlife.

Contributing to the event was thoroughly enjoyable and gave me the opportunity to meet some extraordinary people that truly care about the environment and are willing to dedicate their time to protect it.

The community spirit and commendable action I witnessed, demonstrated the positive influence people can have on their community. Therefore, fortifying that one person CAN make a difference and inspire others to get involved.

Littering has become a prominent issue for the Saltash community, resulting in local people embarking on the challenge of kick-starting the fight against litter.

In January, I had the pleasure of meeting Sho Frank, an inspirational man that is passionate about preserving the beauty of Saltash and our planet. Sho joined as a member of the Saltash Environmental Action group (SEA) in 2013 and has since organised events such as litter pick-ups as a means to clean up the environment. This selffunded organisation relies solely on its committed volunteers and community spirit to restore the beauty of the town. Last month I joined Sho and his wife Hilary (one of our local County Councillors) alongside some local volunteers to take part in one of the SEA’s monthly litter pick-ups. The group consisted of both adults and children from as young as five that share enthusiasm to make positive change.

In just two hours the group managed to collect around 20 bags of waste from the Pilmere Estate.

The contents of these bags mainly consisted of food and drink packaging that had been dropped onto the path, or strewn into nearby bushes “out of sight, out of mind”. Fly-tipped waste was also discovered including various domestic items suggesting an inconsiderate attitude towards recycling and

A dental nurse at Derriford Hospital has been inspired to pursue a radical change in career and is swapping one type of drill for another.

Faye Best-Trent, who lives in Landrake, has worked in dentistry for the last 10 years, before studying Level 2 Carpentry at Cornwall College Saltash.

“Changing career has been at the back of my mind

for a bit but I felt like I couldn’t take that chance, then I decided just to go for it,” Faye said.

“I’m really enjoying exploring this side of my personality. You don’t know if you can do something or not until you try it.

Faye is joined by two other female students on this year’s carpentry course at Cornwall College Saltash.

Rebecca Doyle, who lives in Downderry, said, workers attitudes in the industry are changing towards women, everyone has been really accepting”.

“If you know how to do something properly there

Curriculum Lead for Technology at Cornwall College Saltash, Jamie Rowley, said there are “more and more females undertaking courses to forge a career within the construction industry.”

“It is becoming a career of choice across all trades and at all levels, from trade qualifications through to higher education degrees in Construction Management,” he continued.

“Here at Cornwall College Saltash we are lucky to have experienced skilled lecturers and up to date workshops delivering plumbing, brickwork and carpentry courses. We are always happy to give advice on courses available to students to help start building their futures.”

Meanwhile A former RAF Aircraft Engineer has been inspired to pursue a radical change in career and is swapping jets for nail varnish.

Charlie Brown, who lives in Saltash, spent 22 years as an Aircraft Engineer with the RAF, working on Harrier Jump Jets based in the both the Gulf and Afghanistan.

A couple of years after leaving the Military, Charlie and his wife moved to Cornwall, knowing he wanted to continue working but unsure in what industry.

“I have always enjoyed making people feel nice; I live in Saltash and drove past Cornwall College Saltash one day and after a conversation with my wife I thought I’d go for a complete change and try a nail course,” Charlie said.

“I really love the Level 2 nail services course, everyone has been really welcoming and I seem to be quite good Faye Best-Trent

at it so far. It is a technical skill with your hands, which is what I’ve been used to as an engineer.”

“I didn’t come into it with a pressure of needing a second career, but I am enjoying it so much, I think on completion of the course I will set up my own business and work mobile.”

Nail Lecturer at Cornwall College Saltash, Dawn Willock, said Charlie is a “fantastic student, he is very good with customers and really keen to work and work with clients.”

“Most of our students in this group are over 19, many go onto level 3, set up their own business or work in a salon. It is never too late for people looking to change a career, there are always options available.”

MAN EATING PLANT VISITS SALTASH.NET Article by Kaye Bonner

Not for the faint hearted, this production of A Little Shop of Horrors had you gasping, laughing, crying, cringing, and sitting on the edge of your seat. An ambitious show that captivated the audience’s attention is always a good sign. This show is a combination of Horror, Rock and Comedy written

by Howard Ashman and Composed by Alan Menken. It’s about a sad and unhappy florist shop assistant, who acquires a plant, which feeds only on human flesh and blood.

The show opened with a foot tapping number A Little Shop of Horrors, with other memorable songs following - Skid Row, Somewhere That’s Green, I Am Your Dentist that really engaged the

mood of the story. The music can only be described as Rock and Roll v Motown.

The production was directed by Emily Venner, Assistant Director Sarah Watts, Musical Director Nicola Silvester and Technical Director Matthew Oakes.

The students that performed from Saltash.net were full of energy, excitement and exuberance; they all delivered to a packed audience to enjoy.

It would be rather unfair to hand pick selected principles on their outstanding performances, as each performer excelled in their parts throughout

COMMUNITY NEWS the show. The performances ran with alternate evenings with a younger and older cast, which gave more students the opportunity to perform. The entire cast of children clearly enjoyed themselves and believed in their characters. Richard Tolman, who played an outstanding Seymour, reassured me that “no human beings were actually devoured in the show”. Tommy Williams who played the eccentric gas and air addict, Orin, quoted that, ‘It was a unique and wonderful opportunity to be part of such a fantastic show’.

What struck me when I talked to some of the children, was their immense support for one another, from chorus, cameo parts and principles; they worked together as a team and it certainly showed.

The props were ideal and extremely convincing, in

particular, Audrey 11, who played her part with shameless sassiness and a voice to match, as mouth piece of the very clever Molly Banks.

The orchestra consisted of Saltash.net students, if you closed your eyes for one moment, you’d think you were in a ‘proper’ theatre, their musicality was second to none, with the youngest members being only twelve years of age.

Director, Emily Venner, stated that “All productions have become a huge part of Performing Arts at Saltash.net and they are a great opportunity for students of all ages and abilities to work together and produce something they can be very proud of.”

Roll on their next performance, perhaps with a little less gore!

Introducing James, the new Youth Worker at Saltash Baptist

How long have you lived in Saltash?

James: I was born and raised in Saltash, but have lived in a chalet at Whitsand Bay with my wife Becky and sons Noah and Moses for the past 8 years, but am hoping to move back really soon.

What is the new job you have just started?

James: I work as a Paramedic, on a daily basis, I am exposed to young people who are in desperate need of support; self-harm, depression, anxiety, drugs and alcohol addiction, domestic violence, neglect, anger related injuries, and the list goes on.

I find that a lot of these issues stem from a lack of support at a young age, a lack of mentorship and guidance when they are in their teens; the time that they need it most. Seeing this has led me to taking on a new part time job as a Youth Worker alongside working as a Paramedic.

What does this involve?

James: The main role of my new job is to coordinate “Fusion” which is the name given to the various groups that are ran by Saltash Baptist Church (SBC) for young people aged 1117. In addition to this I will be looking at how we can better support the young people within the community of Saltash.

What is your hope for the future of this work?

James: Life can be hard for a young person these days; the increased pressure from social media

to make everything look good on the outside, but not focus on their own identity. The various groups that are run through the SBC provide a safe place where young people can come, be themselves and help to discover their identity.

The ultimate goal is for young people to have a space where they can explore Christianity and see how having a faith in something greater can be supportive to them in their time of need.

Helen Tempest

RACING TO WIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER It was an incredibly emotional moment for Helen Tempest as she crossed the finish line of the London Marathon 2016, hugged by other runners, overwhelmed by the vast crowd and surge of support as she had refused to let her legs stop moving.

Helen had only taken up running in 2015, when in a fit of optimism, she booked up a load of races to give herself something to train for.

Sadly, nothing prepared her for losing her Dad a few months before London – it was a deeply emotional time when she finally found her Mum in the crowd that day in 2016, and Helen swore, never again!

However, Helen, whose indefatigable positivity took her down from the Midlands to relocate to Saltash just a year and half ago because she’d “always wanted to live in Cornwall”, has risen to the challenge once again.

An incredible 386,050 apply for just 40,000 places in the London Marathon so Helen was amazed when she got the message in January that

someone had dropped out and she had a space.

She has put herself on a fast track programme to be ready in time for the race on Sunday 22 April and is running in aid of Against Breast Cancer.

The charity is funding research to ensure simple home testing for early diagnoses, meaning more tumours can be successfully tackled whilst they are still small.

She is raising as much money as she can, aiming to smash the £2000 target the charity has given her. Helen explains that this is the drive she needs to see her through the infamous wall.

This, her determination to improve her time from 2016, and a celebration of the memory of her Dad – who would have been so very proud of his remarkable daughter.

SALTASH YOUTH BAND WIN THE DAVID DERHAM PLATE

Saltash Junior Band was delighted to learn that their 84 marks in the Brass Band section of the Saltash Music Speech and Drama Festival won them the David Derham Plate recently.

The Band has recently re-structured their youth section, so this was such a bonus.

Monday, January 29 saw the junior band’s first public performance under Christy Smith, when they played at the Saltash Festival. They were awarded a trophy and received some very constructive comments from the judge, including a special mention for their percussionist Matthew Pascoe and praise for how well they all played together and listened to each other.

Saltash Town Band have the Training Band for those who have less confidence, where they can spend time teaching the basic skills of playing within a group and take more time learning new pieces and developing a musical understanding. This group is led by Jane McKane, who is one of the Town Band’s Solo Cornet players; she also plays

with other local music groups and wants to build on her conducting skills.

The Junior Band is for those more experienced players where they can begin to work on more technical skills, to build as players and start to play as an accomplished team by working on harder music joined by a few adult players. This is led by Christy Smith who was himself a member of the Junior Band a few years ago. Upon Christy’s return from University he re-joined Saltash Town Band and is currently their Solo Trombone.

The Band still continues to offer teaching in their beginner’s section to those who have never played a brass instrument.

ESSA DRAMA CELEBRATES in their 10th YEAR!

ESSA Drama has had yet another busy year with actioned packed drama workshops each Saturday at the Saltash SHADO Centre.

Pupils have greatly enjoyed their performing arts sessions and have gained confidence and experience in stagecraft and a variety of theatre skills.

Over twenty Essa pupils entered both the City of Plymouth Music Speech and Drama Festival and the Saltash Music Speech and Drama festival and won many trophies in various spoken word and dramatic arts categories.

Trophies were awarded to them for their ‘outstanding performances’ in prose and sight readings, solo acting, duologues, composition, group drama and humorous verse speaking.

Amelia and Olivia Sissons were

delighted to learn that they had also won the Mayor’s overall winner’s trophy for their acting.

Principal Practitioner Kaye Bonner said: “All the pupils have a most enjoyable time at ESSA Drama; our practitioners enjoy teaching all the young people, encouraging them to build on their confidence, work together as a team and to have fun.

“The children enthusiastically explore various aspects of theatre, stagecraft and dramatic arts in a supportive environment.”

ESSA Drama is celebrating its 10th anniversary in June, additionally, they are now linked with Plymouth University, as a ‘Learning Destination’ for the Cornwall and Devon Pathway to learning, for children between the ages of 7 and 14.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT Article by Rose Bonner

After having reached the pivotal age to have the ability to vote and having attended the hustings at The Core during the general election in 2017, I believe that I have acquired a greater understanding of our local government in Saltash and how it works.

There are four Cornwall Councillors who represent not only Saltash, but Cornwall as a whole. Fortunately, through the Council tax payers’ money, the Cornwall Councillors each are given a £2,000 annual budget to donate solely to local, non-profit and worthy organisations.

Organisations are invited to apply to our local Cornwall councillors; Hilary Frank, Sheila LennoxBoyd, Derek Holley and Sam Tamlin. Our Council taxes paid to Cornwall also include funding for the fire, police and ambulance services, education provision, housing, environment, planning authority, licencing and much more.

In addition, The Saltash Town Council annually precepts a community and festival fund budget for local worthy causes, that can be applied for by contacting the Town Clerk at Saltash Guildhall.

Through increasing the awareness of these assets to our town, more young people will gain the

knowledge to take advantage of them to aid them in their self-development.

In fact, at the age of 18, young people are eligible as candidates at elections to become either a Saltash Town/Cornwall Councillor if they are interested in getting involved in the local government.

As former, honorary secretary of the Saltash Youth Council, which is an independent organisation, I am aware of the continued support that Saltash Town Council gives to our youth council especially financially. This enables the Youth Council to make informed donations to youth groups and individuals to help them in their outstanding endeavours where and when needed.

Speaking of which, the youth council has just kicked off with their AGM (annual general meeting) to start off the year. Unfortunately, all attendants were sad to hear of Ffion Stanton and Camille Smith’s (chair persons) retirement from their position on the youth council. However, we all reminisced on the previous year and its’ successes thanks to the help of Ffion and Camille.

For example, we were able to celebrate the Saltash Town Youth Council’s 25th Anniversary in style and create a youth panel to elevate the voice of the youth.

LIVEWIRE YOUTH project

DISCOVER WHY ROCKSTARS LOVE LIVEWIRE A state-of-the-art recording studio for the young people of Devon and Cornwall, championed by rock royalty including Pete Townshend of ‘The Who’ and the late Lemmy Kilmister of ‘Motorhead’, will open its doors to the public on Saturday March 3.

Based at Saltash Waterside, Livewire Youth Music incorporates traditional youth work, a youth club and a music project. The world-class recording studio has been created for young people aged between 10 and 21, thanks to support from local organisations, major brands and celebrities.

Livewire Youth Music uses contemporary music to unlock creativity offering sometimes vulnerable young people, free music, vocal and technical lessons in a safe and supportive environment, incorporating traditional youth work and a youth club. This combination has proven to be very effective in helping steer

young people through the trials and tribulations of growing up, focusing their energy on constructive activities and often leading to improved employability and music industry careers.

Between 10am and 3pm, on Saturday March 3, for the first time, Livewire will be swinging open its doors for everyone, young and old, to come along and have a look at their state-of-the-art recording studio, their live music venue and all their facilities. This is also an opportunity to meet the team, made up of youth workers, musicians and management committee members.

If you’re a parent, grandparent, a young person interested in music, an interested member of the public, a local business, town councillor or someone who might want to volunteer, this will be a great way to spend a few hours. SAMPLING TO THE SOUNDS OF (sOUTH) AFRICA The only way to really get to know a wine is to visit the vineyards… so we selflessly left the cold and wet of Cornwall in January for the warmth of the Cape Town summer to check out our South African winery suppliers.

Black Elephant Vintners make our hugely popular South African Sauvignon Blanc in the glorious settling of Franschhoek. To the sounds of The Lazy Song (Bruno Mars) we tasted the 2 Dogs a Peacock and a Horse 2017 alongside 11 other of their wines (tough, but it had to be done!). Their Pinotage was sampled to the sounds of Toto’s Africa and the Syrah (intended to be shared with friends) to Dire Straits Brothers in Arms. Their wines are beautifully made and packed full of lovely fresh fruit flavours.

Zevenwacht are a notable wine estate in nearby Stellenbosch.

Jacques, their winemaker, took time out to show us around the beautifully located vineyards, where we sampled the wines from each ‘terroir’. They are blessed to have slopes offering

different aspects and altitudes to best suit their vines. Sauvignon Blanc, for example, is grown at the highest altitude with an aspect that ensures the canopy best shields the grapes from the sun.

Hence their premium ‘360 degree’ Sauvignon Blanc is beautifully fresh and balanced, with fig and gooseberry notes. Their Cabernet Sauvignon, on the other hand, is grown much lower and north facing to ensure ripeness for this sumptuous blackcurrant/ mint flavoured wine.

As we left the 2018 harvest was just being prepared. The Western Cape is facing its worst drought in over a century, but due to very careful water management, wine makers were confident it would produce high quality wines. We look forward to bringing them over soon for you to sample.

48 What’s a painting worth? Who hasn’t been to an exhibition and peered at the label to see the price – as if that’s some measure of its real value? Sometimes we may like a painting but just can’t afford it.

Sometimes it seems a lot, seems overpriced.

We’re used to buying mass produced things - including reproductions very cheaply. But the real thing, an original: how does an artist set a fair price?

First, there are materials, paper, canvas, brushes, some squirts of paint: anything from just a few pounds to, perhaps, £80 for a bigger piece. Then there’s framing; good framing is not cheap and will add at least £30, much more if it’s big or a special moulding. Next, commission: a professional gallery can mark up by as much as 100% on the artist's price for marketing and selling the work [although Ashtorre Rock asks for a much smaller donation.]

And all this before paying the artist for his/her time. Even at the minimum living wage, it’s going to be maybe £50 and many times that for a large or complex work. On top of all this, how do you put a price on ideas, planning, professional training, years of experience and that fact that the work is unique?

In the southwest very good very small paintings can be found for £100 but several hundreds or even a number of thousands is not unreasonable when everything is taken into account.

Next time we are tempted to roll our eyes at the price tag, it deserves a second thought. ©JohnForster 2018

Watercolour painters from Saltash and around are showing their work at Ashtorre Rock until 15 March.

Ashtorre Watercolour Group meets weekly to work on their ideas and develop their technique with the help of well-known south-west watercolour tutor, Shari Hills.

Their exhibition - right under the Brunel Bridge at Saltash Waterside, PL12 4GT - is open 10-4 daily and the work is for sale.

A new show will open on 16 March, featuring the large seascapes and landscapes of oil painter, Ken Dean. Look out for a profile on Ken in the next edition.

the river, and plenty of space for the family.

As anyone with old properties know, there is always something to be done, and Anna is keen to reopen fireplaces and restore the heart of the pub that most likely predates its name – having been built centuries before the bridges came into existence. (Perhaps a keen local historian would like to enlighten us).

Anna took on the freehold late last year and arrived with her sleeves rolled up. She has already refurbished the kitchen, and polished all the traditional brass within an inch of its life!

Food is now served from 12-3 – good old fashioned pub grub, with silly steak night on Wednesdays, 6-9pm where you can get steak for two for just £12.

Doom Bar and Tribute are on tap to appeal to Cornish drinkers, and you can be sure of a warm welcome from Anna and her team behind the bar.

Anna is looking forward to hosting plenty of live music events as well, in keeping with the character of the pub – the perfect place for a fisherman’s shanty to take you back in time.

It’s been quite a year for East Cornwall rockers Ethyrfield. Since Love Saltash last went to press, the band has reached the second heat of Metal to the Masses, a competition aimed at young rock bands, in which the overall winner of this illustrious competition has the privilege of appearing at Bloodstock, the largest independent metal festival in the country, with a crowd of 15,000.

The band are made up of Zack and Ben Cornish, aged 17 and 16 respectively, on vocals and bass and guitar, with Dan Aston, aged 14, on drums.

Taking a slightly different tack, Love Saltash’s Karen Pilkington caught up with Dad, Roger Cornish, to hear more about the band.

Karen: “Firstly I was amazed to hear Ethyrfield online.

They are extremely tight, really melodious, with a unique sound that not only appeals to my head banging children, but also to my more refined ear.

Roger. “The boys take their musicianship very seriously. They have all reached Grade 8 in their chosen instrument, achieved through the School of Rock. They also have ongoing mentoring from

MUSIC SCENE the legendary Tony Iommi, guitarist with Black Sabbath, and the inventor of heavy metal (I had to ask!). In 2015, Ben took part in Sky Arts Guitar Star and reached the finals of the rock guitarist section.

During the competition, Ben was mentored by Tony, who has taken an active interest in the band ever since.

Karen: “The band has an amazing 2018/19 ahead of them, playing at Glas-denbury festival, alongside headliners The Real Thing, support slots with Saxon in November this year, as well as doing some recording at Momentum Studios in Plympton, with well-known local producer Josiah Manning. What kind of help have they had in getting this far?”

Roger. “As a musician myself, my kids have always been around music. It is something they love to do.

Personally, I love attending their gigs and supporting them in any way I see fit. Dan’s Dad, Pete Aston, has also been a tremendous support, helping them carve out a decent online presence using his talents as a web designer. Obviously trying to make it in the music industry is a huge risk, but if you don’t try, you never know. In January 2018, Ethyrfield played on the Introducing Stage at the Giants of Rock Festival at Butlins, Minehead and were voted winners by the

audience, so (they) will return to play the main stage in January 2019. It’s fantastic to see these opportunities unfold for the lads whilst they are still so young, and obviously we will support them all the way.

Karen, “Does this make you nervous for them, as it’s such a tricky industry to get into?”

Roger, “Well Grade 8 guitar counts as UCAS points, just incase they ever want to go Zach Cornish down that route - but don’t tell them I told you that!”

Karen, “I was also really impressed by their song writing as they seem to grasp some really interesting concepts beyond their years” Roger, “Yup, it’s not all about hair swinging and swagger on stage! They do play some covers, just to get their audience going, and because they like them, but I think they are really interested in writing and recording their own songs. Their influences are pretty deep thinkers too, Dan Aston Sound Garden, Dream Theatre and Nirvana, all bands who have an artsy progressive style, and are not ashamed to say they listen to classical music, and have something to say about the state of the world.

Well, we at Love Saltash wish Ethyrfield the best of luck in 2018 and beyond, by the looks of things landing on Planet Rock is imminent.

Lost Dog Dance presents Paradise Lost (Lies Unopened Beside Me) It isn’t easy to produce dance performances on Calstock Arts’ small stage. But when they do manage to put on a performance it’s well-worth taking the opportunity to go and see it. There have been some fascinating performances in the past.

Maybe it’s something to do with the intimacy of the venue, the close connection with the dancers that brings it alive.

There is a one-man staging of Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost by Lost Dog Dance on Thursday March 8 – but not like whatever came into your head when you read the first bit of this sentence!

Lost Dog occupies a unique position in the cultural landscape; drawing in and mixing ideas from theatre, dance, comedy, circus and storytelling in a way no other company does.

This is a journey through the story of the creation of everything, condensed into 75 minutes.

It’s a show which brings you the highlights of this well-known but often forgotten story, beginning with Lucifer’s rebellion and ending with Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden. One man plays all the characters, creates all the scenes and, despite his best efforts, falls a little short of perfection. A show for anyone who has created anything (child, garden, paper aeroplane) and then watched it spiral out of control.

Juan Martín is truly a world-class flamenco guitarist. He has a highly distinctive compositional style influenced by his time in Malaga and Madrid, where he was tutored by the legendary Paco de Lucia. Through the years he has recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and iconic artists including Miles Davis.

Among his achievements was being asked to play at Pablo Picasso’s 90th birthday celebrations which led to a successful album of the specially commissioned music he performed there. He was described by “Guitar Player” magazine as one of the top three flamenco guitarists in the world. It’s also been said of his music that it contains more than a dash of Moorish spice, flamenco with a sheen but still with its roots showing.

Juan once said that flamenco guitar is best heard on its own – and that is what you will get at Calstock Arts. The guitarist/composer plays and introduces his compositions within the forms of the great tradition. His exquisite acoustic style captures his pure flamenco sound: just Juan and his sublime guitar to lift and transport you to another dimension of melodic beauty and rhythmic passion. Viva el arte!

A THOUGHTFUL WALK IN FORDER As any walker around the picturesque village of Forder will acknowledge, it’s easy to step back in time.

The tight lanes with their ancient stone walls and river running alongside are an easy background to imagine horse drawn vehicles, and the busy tramline carrying stone from the local quarry to the nearby quay.

The village would have been a hive of activity, working people coming and going about their business.

John Hooper shares a few photos and old postcards from his collection, to inspire us to think back and perhaps walk the same routes around Forder thinking about that industrial past.

The Postcard headed The Residence Trematon Castle is a photo by Dingle & Son who had a stationary shop in Fore St Saltash. It was addressed to Mr J Wickett (probably no mother) Kelly Bray, Nr Callington, Cornwall And says, Trematon Castle Jan 1915.

The message overleaf reads, Dear Father, Just a PC to wish you a happy birthday, I hope you are well and will like these socks and handkerchiefs. I hope to be home to see you soon.

Hope you are quite well as this leaves me at present.

Fondest love from Your Loving Daughter, Gaye John explains, “She would have walked down to Forder to post the card and a very steep hill with a tough climb back to the castle.”

“The picture of Forder Post Office with the postman outside is probably the PO that was used, mail then transported to Saltash Post Office and hand stamped.

“Sir Vernon Seccombe a local lad was born at the Forder Post Office 14 January 1928.

“He died 6 December 2014”, reminisces John, “ A good friend to Sue and I”.
