One of the priorities of local people, taken up by the Council, was to provide a “vibrant Saltash” - and judging by the success of the Mayfair, and enthusiasm for local events, the town is delivering on this promise.

Plans to

commemorate

end of WW1

A group of councillors and residents of Saltash are working hard, under the chairmanship of Mrs Sue Hooper, to put together a programme of events to commemorate the end of hostilities in 1918.

There is a plan to flood the town with red poppies growing in many different places.

A metal statue titled The Silent Soldier has been acquired from The Royal British Legion and it is hoped that it can find a place in the Peace Garden.

These are examples of the ideas the group is considering, if anyone has any other thoughts or ideas please contact Mrs Sue Hooper on suehcf@msn.com.

The challenge of this event is to create a boat made entirely out of cardboard, which can hold up to two people, and can be paddled from the slip way to a point on the Tamar and back.

The Regatta Committee would like to invite you to get creative! The competition is open to individuals, local businesses, schools, clubs, organisations or anyone who would like to have a go. All you need is a cardboard boat, a team

The Big Event will be held in the Recreation Fields Saturday 16 June. Starting at 12pm, there will be a bar, stalls and catering with a tonne of great games for the kids, live music, welly wanging, competition for the most creative hat, tug-o-war, and raffle.

There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting, parachute games, races, and a penalty shoot out.

The afternoon activities finish at 5pm, but the evening continues from 7pm with live music from Sergeant Flint and a licensed bar.

Cornish lecturer

shortlisted

A lecturer in Cornwall is celebrating after being shortlisted for a national accountancy Tutor of the Year award. AAT Lecturer at Cornwall College Saltash, Michael Armstrong, said he is “delighted to be recognised in this way. It means even more that it is by student nominations only and I am extremely proud to be one of the top four.”

The AAT qualification is taught at three of The Cornwall College Group sites; Saltash, St Austell and Camborne. Students can study levels 2 to 4 which covers foundation certificate, advanced diploma and professional diploma in accounting.

Once a student has achieved level 4, they will hold a professional qualification that is recognised throughout the world and allows them to use the designatory letters MAAT.

SALTASH HALF

MARATHON

The Saltash half marathon had its third year under the Tamar Trotters with 177 entries.

Before the main event the fun run took place with around 400 children running 1.5 miles. There was also a poignant minutes clap for Sharon Lang, whose first race was in Saltash in 2013, and who had tragically died a week prior. As a mark of respect Tamar Trotters wore something pink as it was Sharon’s favourite colour.

There were six home runners in the event the first one being Simon Yeo in a time of 1hr 34mins. The winner was from Pontypridd Roadents AC, Samuel Richards in a fantastic time of 1hr 17 minutes. He was closely followed by the much expected winner Chris Rimmer 1hr 18 minutes. The final runner was back in a time of 3hrs 24 minutes. Contributing

Race organiser, Ed Buckingham said, “Feedback was great. It was commented that, ‘If you come to Saltash you know it’s going to be hard.’ However, the marshals were fantastic and gave good encouragement.”

URGENT APPEAL FOR DONATIONS

In October 2015 in response to the refugee crisis Open Hearts Open Borders – Refugee Aid (OHOB) was born, and now two and a half years later the community grass roots organisation is once again asking for urgent donations for a container of humanitarian aid, which is being sent to the camps in Lesvos Greece.

The container is due to leave Saltash in Cornwall on 30 June, and the volunteers are appealing for donations of specific but essential aid items to fill the shipment.

Despite less media attention, boats arrive daily onto the islands in Greece, and the situation in the camps is still fraught with difficulties; camps are overcrowded and conditions are unsafe. There are currently 13,000 men, women and children stuck on the Greek Islands (figures sourced from Amnesty International). Many of those arrive with nothing. Aid supplies are running low with the continual arrivals and essential items are urgently required once again for the summer months.

On 2 June from 11am to 2pm volunteers will be at QStore Business Centre, Moorlands Trading Estate, Forge Lane PL12 6LX if anyone would like to drop off any items. Spring Concert

Saltash.net held a spring concert on the 28th of March for the music students to participate in and to showcase their talents. It was an extremely successful and popular event and the money raised will go towards resources for the music department. The audience was treated

Spine Crackers Saltash.net’s book group, the Saltash Spine Crackers, took part in the Kernow Youth Book Awards (KYBA), an award organised by School Librarians in Cornwall (SLiC).

The Spine Crackers read all 6 shortlisted books, then prepared a presentation which they performed to over 300 children and staff from

to a selection of musical talents, including solos, duets, covers of songs and even some of the students’ own compositions. Everyone was delighted at how talented and enthusiastic the students were. The performers (including students of all ages) were outstanding throughout the night.

The audience mainly consisted of the students’ peers and families; however members of the general public were also there to support the school. The evening had an amazing atmosphere and everyone enjoyed the nightaudience members and performers alike.

With appearances of the Saltash Jazz Band and the youngest rockers in Saltash, Saltash.net is already planning the next summer concert.

We have now managed to recruit a few girls to the group and we are now reading the UK-wide Carnegie Prize shortlisted books. We have 20 children signed up to the group which meets

Librarian Miss Warwicker said, “I’m most proud of getting the boys that are not all traditional readers to take part in the book group. I think that some just joined at first for the hot chocolate and biscuits but they all read at least one of the shortlisted books and they were all enthusiastic about them. All but one of the boys has asked to continue for the Carnegie prize and they have recruited friends to join them so they must enjoy it. Getting anyone interested in books makes me happy, but getting reluctant reading boys to read makes me very happy!”

May Fair 2018

May Fair 2018 was a really successful day for Saltash.net. Mr Howgate, Mr Oakes, Mr Cole, Ms Barnes, Ms Godlement and Ms Porch all celebrated the sunshine with a quick splash down after getting sponges thrown at them in the “stocks”. The highlight of the day was when Mr Oakes and Ms Godlement were given the sponge treatment by their own family.

Incredibly- and rather bravely- Mr Cole and Ms Barnes remained in the firing line right through the whole day.

It was brilliant to enjoy the day with so many students and their families who were queuing up at one point to reward the generous spirit of our staff and to throw wet sponges.

The team sold raffle tickets for some fabulous prizes, including a ‘BMW for a weekend’, a free dinner night out and a meat voucher, all kindly donated by local companies. In addition there was a 100 box that offered cash prizes of £30, £20 and £10 pounds. All winners have been contacted and are delighted with their prizes. The May Fair raised £400- a massive achievement. The funds will be added to the PTA fundraising campaign to improve our facilities for the benefit of all the students at Saltash.net. Thank you to all who contributed so generously to our stall.

Next year it is intended to increase the ‘sponge the teacher’ opportunity and create a challenge for them to achieve the highest level of sponge bobs for a reward. We also plan to include more students in fundraising, enabling them to showcase their talents and have an opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial flair on behalf of our school community.

DEGREE STUDENTS REVEAL FUN OF OUTDOOR LEARNING TO NURSERY STUDENTS Degree students have been showing the youngest of learners how much fun it can be to get involved in outdoor activities.

FdA Early Childhood Studies students from Cornwall College Saltash are promoting outdoor activities with the family in a low cost and fun way for a variety of ages with children at Little Nippers Day Nursery in Plympton.

The children participated in a nursery rhymed themed pebble hunt in their garden as well as painting their own pebble to be hidden with their families.

FdA Early Childhood Studies student, Kayleigh Roach, said it was great “to see the children’s enthusiasm to the activity we had planned”.

“The nursery rhymed pebbles were then taken to Saltram gardens with #CornwallCollegePebbles written on them so when they are found by the public they could be shared on the Facebook page created by the students,” she continued.

“We wanted to make it a fun and interactive treasure hunt and there have been lots of people finding the

pebbles and we look forward to see if more are found in coming weeks.”

Each child also received a leaflet explaining the activities and maps suggesting local walks where they can take and hide their pebbles.

Membership and Visitor Welcome Manager at Saltram House, Rebecca Smith, said it was “great to have the pebbles at our National Trust house”.

Christmas… it just keeps giving. I’m sorry for mentioning the Christmas word this early in the year, but it is always a special season for those who celebrate it as the birth of Jesus. It is always a special time for this church as over the last couple of years we have hosted a Christmas day meal for those who are lonely, want some company or just fancy something a bit different for the day. We eat a full roast dinner and have a quiz and sing together.

The reason for mentioning that word is that the effects of last Christmas still live on now…

Although we host it, the Christmas Day Meal really is a team effort of the local community who help in supplying food; transport; presents and so much more. One of the gifts that people give is money,

we are really grateful and it means our chefs can buy some extras to make the meal really special.

This year we were so overwhelmed by the response that we had more money than we could spend, so we took the decision on your behalf to donate the surplus of the money to the Saltash Foodbank. It was great to hand over a cheque for over £250 to continue the work throughout the year of supporting those who are needing help and support.

One of the things we want to do as a church is see how we can help the ‘invisible’ people of the community, those who fall through the gaps or find themselves lonely. Let us know if this is something you are feeling and we would love to find ways that we can help our community to love, care and support one another.

Saltash.net students ace Ten Tors challenge

The Year 12 students Following months of preparation, two teams of saltash.net students completed the Ten Tors Challenge with flying colours this past weekend, finishing their routes well within the allowed times.

Whilst there were a few walking wounded towards the end of the route, every team member finished and received their The Year 10 students hard earned medals.

Saltash.net’s Year 12 team, who took on the 45 mile route, and the Year 10s who completed the 35 mile route, both finished in great times.

Ten Tors Manager Mr Drewery was delighted with the efforts of all involved.

“Our Year 12 students completed the 45 mile walk with over 5 hours to spare, and although the Ten Tors challenge is not a race, their time showed how determined they were to lead the way on their particular route.

“The Year 10s also made a big effort, and even

though they found the going really tough on day two, they also finished well within the time allowed.

Our Year 10 team leader couldn’t believe she had been up at 4.30am cooking breakfast!” he said.

“A big thank you to all staff members who have supported the event this year, but in particular a massive thank you to Miss Newberry and Mr Jones for giving up all those weekends to help prepare the teams for the challenge – it could not have happened without their help,” he added.

SAFE PASSAGEWAY SCHEME AWAITS FUNDING

Love Saltash has followed the Callington Saltash safe passageway scheme with great interest as the idea to promote healthy walking and cycling routes for us to enjoy is surely a no brainer.

Rebecca Lyle, Transport Principal Officer for Cornwall Council kindly supplied us with the

report below which makes for interesting reading.

It’s always worthwhile contacting your local councillor or MP if you want to make a comment.

The Safe Passageway scheme feasibility was completed in Autumn 2017. Its aims were to improve safety and comfort, provide cycleways (off-highway where possible), consider links to surrounding areas, key risks, and potential synergies with other proposed schemes in the area.

The scheme options were discussed at a public meeting on the 20 Nov 2017 with a turnout

COMMUNITY NEWS of around 60 people. Option A proposed by St Mellion Parish Council, is the preferred route. It includes some sections using quiet lanes, some sections using existing highway verge and some sections where land-take is necessary.

Option A benefits:

• Encourage journeys by bike instead of car • Contribute to tackling climate change • Encourage healthy lifestyles • Support economic prosperity by promoting ecotourism • Providing a safe, comfortable, direct route for commuting and leisure

Option A Engineering issues: • Requires new construction • Higher costs (when compared to Option B).

• Requires estimated 7920m2 of land take • May require some utility service diversions

Following discussions at the public meeting, the design team went away to review some of the suggestions made by the public which included opportunities to reduce the amount of crossings, allow space for tag along bikes, installing push button crossings, a physical barrier between the safe passageway and the carriageway, and a way of bypassing St Mellion.

This subsequent review has now been completed and the feasibility report updated including responses to these points. The cost of the preferred route is estimated at between £2.65m - £3.1m.

However, although the Government has published its £1.2 billion plan to increase cycling and walking in April 2017, there are currently no bidding opportunities for Cornwall to pursue, meaning that the Council cannot yet deliver the scheme.

It will continue to monitor future government funding opportunities, and possibly build the scheme in phases to suit funding availability.

Zero Gravity Jump in with Jacks Gym Article by Emily Hunt

It’s been 7 years in the making and now that the right space is available, local leisure and fitness entrepreneurs, Mo Gregory (of Zero Gravity) and Lee Russell (of Jacks Gym), have joined forces to create a unique multipurpose sports facility that may be enjoyed by the entire Saltash community.

They have named it, Jumpin’ Jacks Gym. Mo and Lee are passionate about creating a space that enables multipurpose use under one roof. They tell me Jumpin’ Jacks Gym will be a complete contrast to the huge, impersonal sports chain centres. Every aspect of Jumpin’ Jacks

Gym is community driven as this amalgamation and expansion of some of Saltash’s most celebrated existing sports facilities, will cater for adults and children alike. They chose to wait for the right space to become available in their own town rather than take their business to Plymouth in order to maintain the family and community driven atmosphere both businesses are already famous for.

Mo and Lee recognise that parents struggle to get to the gym with child care issues, so have designed a centre where parents and children can enjoy fitness activities simultaneously. Mo states, ‘Jumpin’ Jacks Gym will offer a space where parents can train at the same place as their children. I believe it will help develop family cohesion’.

They have designed a model where children can exercise without inhibition, and hope the variety of activities offered means there is something for everyone. Whether children take part on one of the ten trampolines, the Parkour or assault course equipment, it will feel more like physical play than ‘keeping fit’. Jumpin’ Jacks Gym is a far cry from a trampoline park or soft play centre.

It will boast structured sessions for children under the supervision of BGA qualified instructors. For mums like myself, this is music to my ears as safety is as important to the JJG staff as it is to us parents.

For older children, Lee hopes JJG will become a Youth Club type of environment, so that young people may gather in the same place but focus on whatever their desired form of sport is.

The existing Jack’s Gym will be moving premises completely whilst Zero Gravity’s gymnastics classes will remain where they are, but expand on what they can offer within the new gym. As Jack’s Gym were finalists in the 2017 National

Fitness Awards for Combat Zone Gym of the Year, it comes as no surprise that the Saltash Amateur Boxing Club led by Mickey Northfield, are going to be based upstairs at the new gym.

On top of all the existing gym equipment and classes, Jumpin’ Jacks Gym are introducing additional, even more inclusive services for the community. The premises will include break out zones including a spin class room and multipurpose studio, an indoor running track, Parkour equipment, climbing zones, obstacle courses and a boxing ring. There will be a wider range of classes on offer such as dancercise, trampoline fitness, functional fit, parent and toddler fitness, yoga, callisthenics to name a few.

The centre will have a café and can be hired for both adult and children’s parties.

Everything that is already on offer at Jack’s Gym will be bigger and better in the new building with the same friendly team at the helm. I for one can honestly say that without such a personal, friendly approach I would still be the gym-phobe I once was. I’m a changed (healthier and stronger) person because of the existing Jacks Gym. I’m now convinced my 4 year old daughter will embrace this lifestyle thanks to the opportunities this centre will have to offer.

art at ashtorre The art at Ashtorre so far this year has been mainly about what the artists see.

Even if the subjects have been altered, adapted, or somehow abstracted, the paintings have still given a pretty good idea of what the painters were looking at.

Hilary Hughes has previously looked at quarries, saltpans, derelict buildings and corrosion but her work does not simply describe; it seeks to convey her feelings and responses. Whilst some of her paintings in this new collection include elements that pretty obviously represent the flow and splash of water

Hilary chooses to use acrylic paint because, when diluted with water, it is very fluid; it also dries quickly, enabling her to apply many translucent layers that build into the final image.

This is not abstract design and it is not semi-abstract art that leave the viewer trying to figure out “what it’s supposed to be”. This is paint flowing on canvas, rooted in careful observation but reflective of understanding, passion and concern: paintings, in Hilary’s words, that have “grown out of my feelings for place.”

Both rowing the gig Ann Glanville, the Ladies A Team crew (made up of Kate Bourn, Naomi Philpott, Bea Holman, Stacey Best, Madeleine Steer, Leanne Woodward and Steve Kent (cox)) held off a strong challenge from Falmouth Ladies, as well as the Mens A crew who finished in the silver medal position after a nail biting head to head with Looe Mens in the final.

The club’s Mens Veterans crew were also successful in defending their world title in the Mens Veterans category with the Ladies Veterans A crew finishing a very credible third in their race.

SWINGING 60’s REVIVAL with the new jersey boys

On Saturday 14 April, at the Saltash Social Club, the New Jersey Boys Tribute Band had the entire Saltash Social Club jiving, to popular numbers to invoke memories – Big Boys Don’t Cry, Sherry, Begging, Walk Like A Man and Working My Way Back To You, just to name a few of their memorable songs.

The whole room was buzzing with over two hundred guests

enjoying the atmosphere, as the tribute band New Jersey Boys charismatically enticed everyone to dance, decked out in their snazzy red suit jackets and slick patent shiny shoes. The majority of guests also dressed up for the occasion, there were an abundance of Jersey Boy wannabes milling around, and ladies with ‘swing’ circle skirts, neck scarves and swishing pony tales, it felt like you could have been on the set of Grease!

During the interval ‘Tina Turner’ made an appearance in drag and sang many of her popular songs and in the second half the boys morphed into “Showaddywaddy”.

Charly Honey, aged 26, a local Saltash woman was diagnosed with having the Huntington’s gene four years ago, and since then, along with Mum, Sarah Jane Dawe and Aunt Liz Fedrick, they decided to raise awareness and fundraising through social events, including balls, talent competitions, race nights, aerobathon, BBQ fun days, “wear a sport’s shirt” night, raffles and many more fundraising events. To date they have managed to raise a staggering £30,000 for the charity.

They have funded a specialised machine to help Huntington sufferers at the new Derriford Research Facility, and have been invited along to its official opening in May by HRH the Princess Royal.

vINCE LEE

Vince Lee (playing The Union Inn on 29 June) on the surface is a brilliant bandleader, a showman, and virtuoso blues guitarist, but, on closer inspection his output plots the path of an intrepid musical journey.

He feels the importance of not getting too comfortable in one situation, spanning genres, and always willing to push his own abilities as well as challenge the listener.

He plays over 100 shows a year with both his band and his collaborative work with Becca Langsford and Thomas Ford, and still finds time to take an almost workman-like approach to bettering his craft. I was lucky enough to speak with Vince and

was reminded of the words of another hardworking bluesman, the late, great BB King. “I think I’ve done the best I could have done. But I keep wanting to play better, go further. There are so many sounds I still want to make, so many things I haven’t yet done”

JM: Your music draws on traditional Rag-time, Jump blues, Swing, even Exotica and Zydeco, is there a particular area that you enjoy most?

VL: I got obsessed with the whole so called roots music genre from an early age. I was lucky because I always had friends with great record collections, that steered me right! I’d have different periods where I got transfixed with certain artists. I’d listen to nothing but Bessie Smith for six months or Son House for example and that would come out in my playing.

MUSIC SCENE JM: You have played as part of a duo with vocalist Becca Langsford and also separately with harmonica virtuoso Thomas Ford in recent years.

Have collaborations given you an opportunity to step into new territory?

VL: Without a doubt! Firstly, I’ve always been enthusiastic about younger musicians playing blues. When I was young I had to look to the older generation who were not always supportive or keen to give guidance. When I started playing with Becca and Thomas Ford they were both very young. Becca was 19 and Thomas would have been 22. It’s very attractive to us old stalwarts to play music with younger musicians. It keeps you from getting jaded because all that youthful energy and enthusiasm feeds the soul. I guess I have explored new (old) territory more so with Becca as we have performed together a lot over the last 10 years. Performing as a duo with Becca has stripped back all the layers I’d come to rely on. I feel there is pure honesty in the way we play music together and that feels good to me!

JM: In a fantasy world, who would be your dream collaboration?

VL: Well if you’d asked me that 10 years ago I’d have given you a huge list of players that I dig, but I guess I’ve narrowed that list down in recent years. I would still like to put together a small string band based around the kind of material I’m doing with Becca. Featuring some old time fiddle, banjo, mandolin, string bass & washboard. Like the Memphis Jug Band or Gus Cannon’s Jug Stompers. It still sounds like punk rock to me.

JM: Who would you sight as your biggest influences in music, and why?

VL: James Harman is the first one who springs to mind. I’ve been listening to his music since 1987 and I have been constantly blown away by his attitude and approach to playing good blues. He’s been doing his thing and influencing me throughout the years and his new record “Fingerprint” proves he can still do the business. Tom Waits is another strong influence that I’ve always kept close to. I have always had a soft spot for comic quirkiness and that kind of jagged dissonance in music and Tom Waits (with Marc Ribot on guitar) keeps me happy in that department. Anything that’s got that B-movie, surf twang lo-fi, freak show, jungle swing wackiness gets my attention. Of course I have gathered a million influences, 99% are long dead and sure didn’t get any credit when they were around.

JM: What’s next Vince, any plans for a new record with the band?

VL: I did make a full band album which never got released.

It’s sitting in the vaults and I don’t know if it will ever see the light of day. I poured my heart into it for a long long time and it finally wore me down. I wound up feeling like it lost relevance to where I had ended up as a musician.

The market for independent artists selling their music/ CDS etc has changed so drastically in the last few years, I’ve been reluctant to throw myself into any costly, time consuming recording projects. Having said that I have a basic studio set up at home which keeps my creative side active. I am planning to release an EP of tunes with Becca later this year. We are into the idea of keeping things DIY so recording at home is the way forward at the moment.

I’ll keep challenging myself with this music and try do it justice. That’s all you can really do in the end.
