Love Saltash is committed to remaining a true community magazine, so this month we have a number of interviews and stories, not just sourced from the local area but also written by local people as well.

The amount of talent, drive and skill that Essanians have in abundance is remarkable.

And this is what is going to be filling the pages of Love Saltash.

Starting with the incredible images we have used by local professional photographers and artists throughout the magazine.

Community

Grants open to bids

Community and voluntary groups in Cornwall are invited to apply for grants of up to £1,000 as part of Cornwall Council’s Community Chest grant scheme for 2017/18. Each of Cornwall Council’s 123 councillors has a total fund of £2,000 to support projects run by not for profit groups in their local area and community and voluntary groups are being asked to apply.

The grants can be used to help a wide range of people and activities for example: helping vulnerable children or adults, helping young people and supporting community facilities.

Not for profit groups can apply for Community Chest grants of between £100 and £1,000. The closing date for applications is 16 February 2018.

Social Housing Applicants to be prioritized New rules are being put in place so that social housing goes to those with a strong connection to Cornwall - and the greatest housing need. The key changes are as follows:

• Applicants will need to have a three-year connection to Cornwall to be allocated a Cornwall Council property or a property that Homechoice has nomination rights over. Similar rules will apply to parish connections too.

• Applicants who do not apply for any suitable properties that become available through Homechoice, or refuse two suitable properties in a 12-month period, will be removed from the Homechoice register • People with household incomes of £60,000 or more, or with assets worth more than £50,000 will not be allowed to join the Homechoice register • Cornwall Council owned properties, around 1/3rd of Cornwall’s 29,000 social housing properties, will be prioritised for households on annual incomes below £30,000 You can access www.housingoptionscornwall. co.uk or by calling 0300 1234 161.

Commemoration

of the end of

World War one During the last Full Council meeting Saltash Town Council discussed the question of whether Saltash should be commemorating the end of the WW1 hostilities in November 1918.

They have a working party to start the planning process. If they want to go ahead with this as a Town Council it was agreed that they should liaise with any groups or individuals who might have an interest and who would be willing to work with the Council towards this end.

November 2018 may seem to be a long way off, but the time is now to begin to make plans as soon as possible. If you would like to join us with the discussions and planning please contact the Mayor at j.dent@saltash.gov.uk

TAMAR BRIDGE

U P D AT E

Local woman Helen Harrington has been busy raising signatures for a petition on change. org to raise awareness of what she feels is a pressing health and safety issue regarding the Tamar Bridge.

The petition has successfully got 2296 signatures in the last seven months, and Helen is determined to continue her campaign to get better safety barriers installed along the pedestrian walkway side of the bridge.

Helen explains, “As a local resident I have been campaigning for 2 years for anti-climb barriers to be installed on the Tamar Bridge together with effective and prompt mental health provision and support for extremely vulnerable people which is currently sadly lacking. I have written numerous letters to MP’s, Councillors and the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee in an attempt to make this area safer. I firmly believe that many tragedies that have happened here are ‘impulsive’ and given the correct level of timely support, could have been averted.

Research has also shown that following the introduction of anti-climb barriers in other areas of the country such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, averted suicide attempts are not displaced to other ‘unsecured’ jumping sites.

The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Joint Ferry Committee are conducting a comprehensive health and safety review and will release findings later this year. There is a plan to create a learning centre at the newly improved control room and customer service centre.

COMMUNITY FLOOD FORUM

Saltash Community Flood Forum meets regularly to keep a careful eye on any flooding risks within Saltash and its environs.

It is a voluntary group of local people who are interested in promoting natural and engineered approaches to limiting flood risk in the Saltash area. Through active engagement with Cornwall Council, the Environment Agency and South West Water, they aim to draw their attention to known and potential flood risk areas so that our community can be protected and advised on how to act responsibly before, during and after floods.

Parts of Saltash are vulnerable to surface water, river, and tidal flooding. The causes can be as simple as a blocked drain or a high tide coinciding with strong winds. The former is preventable, the latter is much harder to control.

The next meeting of the forum will be at 18:30 on February 12 at Saltash Guildhall where landlord Chris Jones will be discussing the progress of the Cornwall Beaver Project at Woodland Valley Farm near Truro. The ability of beavers to build dams which slow the flow of water and at the same time remove pollutants, improving overall water quality and reducing flood risk is already proving of great benefit to the people living downstream in the village of Ladock. Anyone with an interest is welcome to attend, particularly landowners who might be interested in reintroducing this keystone species locally.

SHUT DOWN THE STIGMA ON MENTAL HEALTH Article written by Jenny Martin, Year 13 student at saltash.net

On the evening of Monday 13th November, Saltash.net saw a true example of how people can come together in aid of an amazing cause for charity. ‘Shut Down the Stigma’, a showcase in support of the charity Young Minds, was held at saltash.net to raise money and promote awareness of mental health.

Entirely down to two Year 13 students, Kari Summers and Danielle Burnard; these young women independently planned, designed and co-ordinated the event. They took it upon themselves to find a way to raise money and more importantly raise awareness for a very sensitive cause; managing to rally up a huge amount of

outside support, including the contribution of many valuable raffle prizes.

Kari and Danielle are the main factors to the success of the night, from organising the arrangements of the show, advertising and selling the tickets; they truly deserve the biggest of congratulations. Without their commitment from beginning to end, the night couldn’t have happened.

The production aimed to bring awareness to the mental health issues affecting many of our society today. The showcase featured many musical and dance performances by both past and present students of Saltash.net, who all gave

HEALTH NEWS up their free time to contribute to the special evening. After each performance, there was a short speech, addressing the audience with background facts and information on mental health. This was equally moving and educational, really adding a special segment to the show in between each act.

To represent the huge success of the evening the final amount raised reached the large total of £780, which really exceeded initial expectations, just going to show how generous people can be in aid of such an important cause.

In addition to the talented performers, praise must also go out to the group of volunteers that helped out with preparation and assistance on the night; from helping with refreshments and raffle tickets to backstage arrangements and technical equipment. This all helped make the night run as smooth as it did. A special mention must go to the supporting teachers and staff for the guidance and support throughout the process, all making this goal achievable.

Kari and Danielle explained why the event is so important.

“We decided to organise Shut Down the Stigma as we’ve experienced how mental health, and the lack of support regarding it, can seriously affect young people’s lives. By organising the show we were able to not only raise money for Young Minds but also spread awareness and get people talking about mental illnesses. We hope that this has broken down the stigma and has helped people realise that it’s ok to talk about how they are feeling,” they said.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved and was a valuable accompaniment to saltash.net’s new Be Well agenda, which focuses on the mental and physical health and wellbeing of its students. The introduction of the Be Well agenda saw the school organise the first ever Be Well Drop Down day, with the whole school enthusiastically taking part in a day of entertaining and informative tailored events, focusing on both mental and physical health.

Women into STEM Eleven Year 9 girls recently visited Plymouth City College to explore the different jobs Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects can lead to. The aim of the trip was to encourage more girls to consider a career in science.

The girls explored four of the many different aspects of STEM jobs. These included Mechanics, Media, Engineering and Forensic Science. First the students experienced changing tyres, checking oil levels and the anti-freeze in a car. During this activity students got fully involved and even wore overalls!

The next subject to explore for the students was Media. The girls had the chance to use professional cameras and learnt how to edit videos. They used green screens and had a lot of fun transporting themselves to different photo-shopped backgrounds.

After a short break they headed off to Engineering, where they learnt about brittle and durable materials. They also tried out a special machine for testing the durability of materials, which was great fun.

Engineering was then followed by Forensic Science. The girls had the chance to explore a mock-up crime scene where they had to try and solve a mystery. They also had the chance to discuss the United Nations Sustainable World agreement.

The students all thoroughly enjoyed the day and are grateful to Plymouth City College for the experiences the day gave them. A big thank you to Ms Gue and the Science Department who organised the trip and another thank you to Plymouth City College for hosting saltash.net students for the day.

POSITIVE CHANGE, THE NATURAL WAY

NATURE NEWS Volunteering has become a way of life for local hero Jon Forster and his wife Dee. Having suffered from severe depression, Jon is amazed by how much working in the great outdoors contributes to a feeling of wellbeing, especially when that work gives back so much to others in the community.

Coombe Woods is just below Jon and Dee’s home, and was once a neglected area of land used by kids looking to hide their activities. Jon made the decision to begin to tidy up, which has snowballed into the Coombe Woods Regeneration Project with a growing following on Facebook.

Jon is now an accredited Volunteer Ranger supported by Cormac Solution Ltd, Cornwall Council’s contractor, and has won several awards for community work.

The group is not able to accept financial donations, but Jon is happy to receive gifts in kind. He had over 12,000 bulbs donated last year, all of which have been planted and are about to transform the woods into a riot of colour.

his signposts and benches, all hand made by himself from wood and offcuts that he is given. Jon also makes bird boxes and insect hotels which he sells for a small profit which goes back into the woods.

Cormac Solutions supports their volunteers by providing small tools and gloves for them to use. They also have a trailer of tools available for groups to borrow free of charge for community projects.

Jon would dearly love for others to join him. Brunel, St Stephen’s and Bishop Cornish Primary Schools have all been very supportive helping plant and maintain, and Jon is looking for adult volunteers as well. He makes sure he only works when the weather is kind, so there is something for everyone to do without too much difficulty!

He is DBS checked (necessary in his other job as a local lollipop man) and managed by Jenny Heskett, Countryside Ranger with Cormac Solutions. Jenny is delighted with the improvements Jon has made saying, “Jon has transformed the site from scruffy, litter ridden, overgrown, with invasive species to an open, welcoming site full of wild flowers and bulbs.

We need a “Jon” for every site, and I would like to thank him so much for all his hard work.”

SALTASH SUPPORTS LOCAL FOOD BANK

Saltash Foodbank relies on the local community for food donations, volunteers and finances and wishes to thank the many individuals, organisations and businesses in Saltash, that support them with food and monetary donations.

The picture above was sent in by saltash.net whose staff have been donating to the Foodbank at Christmas for four years now, and this year invited students to bring in donations as well.

This year Year 7 students Amy Snook and Leon Kirby helped to deliver the donations to Saltash foodbank where they were gratefully received by Rika Chanter.

The food bank is open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 2pm to 4pm, at Lower Ground Floor, 18 Belle Vue Road, Saltash PL12 6ES. They

are based in the same building as Citizens Advice Cornwall, Saltash Office.

They also welcome donations at their collection points at Waitrose, Co-op, Barclays, Hennings Moir Estate Agents, Saltash Churches and the Children’s Centre.

First aid course

sparks new career South East Cornwall is to benefit from the services of a new Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) thanks to a college employee inspired by a first aid course.

Campus Support Assistant from Cornwall College Saltash, Kevin Oak, decided to pursue a career within the ambulance service after completing a First Aid at Work course in his current role and is leaving the College to pursue his dream career.

“After completing the first aid course at work it made me realise I wanted to focus on helping others. The training was excellent and really gave me the interest to learn more,” Kevin said.

For the last six months Kevin has been a First Responder, which is a voluntary position with the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT).

“If someone calls for an ambulance in the Saltash area, whilst the ambulance is on the way to them the First Responder is dispatched to attend the scene to monitor the situation, do basic observations and CPR if it’s required.”

“It is a role I have really enjoyed alongside my full time job and it further convinced me that a full time role within the ambulance service was what I wanted to do,” Kevin continued.

“In my new role as Emergency Care Assistant I will be driving ambulances, assisting the paramedic once on scene and taking patients into hospital and doing the handover. I am really looking forward to starting the next step in my

new career.”

SWASFT covers one of the most rural areas of the UK and are committed to providing the population of the South West with the highest standard of out-of-hospital care.

Access to Higher Education Lecturer at Cornwall College Saltash, Melanie Yarwood, said it is “great news Kevin is pursuing his dream career to eventually become a paramedic.”

“For those interested in a change of career such as this and who may be worried that they don’t have sufficient qualifications, our Access to HE Health & Social Care (Nursing) course puts you on the right pathway to applying for a BSc Paramedic Practitioner or a BSc Paramedic Science degree.”

“Our alumni from both pathways have been exceptionally successful at securing their university places. To date, we have achieved 100% progression rate into this sector from both Access to HE pathways.”

Head of Cornwall College Saltash, Margaret Butfield, said that at Saltash “we pride ourselves with our connection with the community”.

“Kevin, our Campus Support Assistant, has embraced the opportunity to qualify for a change in career and to give his time helping others in need. We will miss him terribly but we are all incredibly proud of him.”

CHARITY NEWS David Carney-Haworth and wife Liz are honoured for their hard work

HOW OPERATION ENCOMPASS PROTECTS VULNERABLE CHILDREN

Domestic abuse can affect anyone from all walks of life.

Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, Shaun Sawyer, was himself a victim, witnessing his birth father throwing his Mum down the stairs as a small child, before she was able to escape the marriage and lead him to safety.

He recalls going to school feeling ashamed yet not being able to talk to anyone about what he

had seen.

This explains his passion to support a remarkable scheme, started by Torpoint Nursery and Infants Headteacher, Liz Carney-Haworth and her husband, David, now retired Police Sargent.

Four years from its inception, Operation Encompass is now active in half of the 43 National Police Forces and is being adopted internationally as well.

CHARITY NEWS The scheme is simple as David Carney-Haworth explains on the Operation Encompass website.

“If a domestic incident occurred the previous evening and a child was in the house, the police would contact the nominated Key Adult at the school the child attends prior to the start of the school day.

Appropriate support would then be available for that child. This support could be overt or silent dependent upon the circumstances.

Operation Encompass was trialled in fourteen schools in the Devonport area of Plymouth and one in Torpoint. Each school identified a Key Adult (usually the Head Teacher and designated Safeguarding Lead) who undertook specific and bespoke training so that there could be an appropriate response to the information being given to them through the project.

nursery raises funds for childrens’ charity

Tamar View Nurseries raised a grand total of nearly £400 for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund over the Christmas period.

The Saltash Garden Centre held a customer collection as part of their Christmas grotto, as well as their Christmas ‘wishes, dreams and memories’ tree.

A total of £395 was raised for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund, which aims to make a difference for all young patients and their families and carers, both in hospital and at home.

“As part of our Christmas tree, people could write messages for loved ones, dreams for the future or simply a fond memory of their Christmas past, along with providing a charity donation,” said Dean Binley, who visited Derriford Hospital on behalf of the Garden Centre. “Our staff wanted to

support local charities, particularly at this time of year, and felt that this amount of money would make a big difference to them.

“The donations took off from day one and the tree was bursting with messages. We are incredibly proud to have such a generous and loyal customer base who wanted to donate to the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund and help to brighten the lives of the children admitted to the hospital.”

Sue Rodgers, play service team leader at Derriford Hospital and fundraising co-ordinator for the fund, added: “Thank you to everyone for their contribution. This amount of money will make a huge difference to the resources we are able to provide to the children and their families.”

Free school outreach visits with the RSPB

As part of a nationwide campaign to reconnect young people with nature, the RSPB has teamed up with Aldi to provide free outreach sessions to thousands of primary school and nursery children across Saltash.

The fun outdoor sessions aim to teach pupils about the wildlife and habitats found in and around the school grounds, and provide inspiration for easy ways to make improvements for wildlife. Topics that are covered by the sessions include wildlife identification, habitat mapping and mini beast hunting, and are all linked to national curriculum learning outcomes.

Gemma Dunn, schools outreach project officer says “We are excited to be entering our second year delivering these fantastic sessions to primary schools and early year providers in the local area.

Whether it’s watching gulls pulling up worms on the playing fields, catching woodlice to put into

bug pots, chasing butterflies or making wild art from autumn leaves, there is something for every age and interest. Most importantly, we are getting children outside, exploring their surroundings and getting personal with nature.”

The project relies on the efforts of volunteers to help with the delivery of sessions.

Gemma added, “Volunteers can bring so much to this type of project, there are many people out there with a real passion for wildlife who are great for inspiring the next generation. Whether you are an amateur naturalist or a lifelong enthusiast, we could really do with your help to visit the children and pass on your knowledge.”

Throughout the whole of the evening, there were cheers of encouragement, delight, admiration and congratulations in abundance.

The organising working group of the Saltash Town Youth Council (Stephanie Tambling, Stephanie Carter, Sue Hooper MBE, Ffion Stanton, Cami Smith and Len Maddock) were keen to thank so many people who had helped to make this wonderful event such an outstanding success.

This included Saltash Social Club members and staff (for the venue), Andy and Julie Rance and Livewire Youth project for all their kind support and for allowing Livewire building to be used for organising meetings, and Andy setting up all the PA equipment on the evening. JACK LEADS FAMILY FIRM OF FUNERAL DIRECTORS INTO FOURTH GENERATION At just 23, Jack Weekes didn’t have to think twice when he was given the opportunity to take over as head of his family’s independent firm, J Weekes Funeral Directors.

Jack is the fourth generation of the Millbrook firm, which was set up by his great granddad, Harry Weekes, in 1934. When Jack’s granddad, John, finally called it a day after a remarkable 59 years of service, Jack decided it was time to step up.

“Grandad took over the business at quite a young age when his father died and he wanted to be able to pass it on,” said Jack. “I’d been working as a joiner for three years and went self-employed after my apprenticeship so I would always come and help granddad when he needed a hand.

“He hoped I’d go into it eventually and I always wanted to do it once he retired. But he hasn’t left Jack with Missy completely. He didn’t take a holiday in 27 years and he still comes in to help even now! He only lives two doors up the road and it’s nice to be able to draw on his experience and advice.”

Jack is keen to use his carpentry skills to re-introduce traditional hand crafted solid oak or mahogany coffins.

He will also offer a horse-drawn hearse, with his partner, Charlotte Pine, at the reins with her four-yearold Fell cross horse, Missy. The hearse is being hand made by Fenix Carriages, whose customers include

the Royal Family.

Much of Jack’s work is conducted in people’s homes, unless they prefer to visit the funeral parlour. “It’s very rewarding work” adds Jack, “ being on the whole journey with people who are rock bottom when you first see them but who are comforted through the journey to the point where they come in afterwards to say ‘thank you’. It’s knowing how to talk to people and it’s supporting people through a very difficult time.”

Pentillie unveils firs built in South East Cor

Award winning Pentillie Castle has unveiled a stunning new stone circle built atop the Pentillie estate in the Tamar Valley AONB, overlooking the Tamar Valley, Dartmoor and Plymouth Sound.

The stone circle, thought to be the first to be built in South East Cornwall for at least 2,000 years, is the folly of Pentillie’s owner, Ted Coryton.

Ted has always been fascinated by the history of the many standing stones, stone circles and other ancient monuments on Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor and wondered at their spiritual or religious meaning. “They obviously must have had great significance to the people who built

them because of the time and effort required to erect them at a time when survival must have been the primary concern and occupation of most people”.

“We can only guess at the original reason for these ancient monuments which adds to their attraction and mystery”, says Ted. “Here each stone represents a person or people to me but who they are will be a source of puzzlement and conjecture for years to come.

Mew Stone off Plymouth. It is a place of amazing views which few of Pentillie’s guests ever went to because there was no ‘actual’ reason to go there.

“It started as a mad idea,” says Ted, “but then we thought it would actually be worthwhile – an opportunity to build something really simple out of natural unworked local material that would last for centuries”.

Pentillie is now hoping the stunning circle, with

an outlying stone to record the winter solstice, the beginning of longer days and the growing season, will provide an interesting and unusual new location for wedding ceremonies or celebrations, as well as a venue for those wanting an outdoor event with a difference or just for quiet contemplation.

It may be a “mad idea” but it is a stunningly beautiful one.

ART AT ASHTORrE The 2018 Café Exhibitions at Ashtorre Rock [under the Brunel Bridge] have started with a display of watercolours, acrylics and pencil drawings by Tamar Art Group, a group of keen amateurs who meet weekly at Ashtorre Rock to enjoy sharing their ideas. The

Paintings are simply an artist’s choice of lines, shapes and colours that build up an image – that’s the technical job – but, if it’s a ‘figurative’ painting – that’s one representing a thing or a place - one thing that can help to make it successful is ‘the story it tells”.

Bob Bennett’s painting of a Highland Village [in the current Tamar Art Group exhibition] is not trying to imitate how that group of houses “really looks”.

Instead, it tells us how it feels: how the buildings are huddled against the cold, perhaps, isolated, exposed, overshadowed by the heavy mountains.

The limited palette of blue-greys and purple-browns tells of a dour strength. The cottages are simplified to flat, angular, white shapes and the composition

exhibition runs until 8 February.

A show by the ‘other Wednesday painters’ Ashtorre Watercolour Group, tutored by watercolour specialist Shari Hills, takes over the space from 9 February until 15 March. The café and shows are open from 10 to 4 daily.

is run though with strong, resilient verticals – the house sides, the chimney smoke, the mountains’ precipitous edges - but then what could have been a sombre view is brought to life by the ochre cottage doors and the terracotta band [bank? field?] on which the houses stand – complementary colours to the purples above and below. All of these technical decisions combine to take us beyond a simple ‘looks like’ and tell us about that village, bring it to life, tell its story – and to make a good painting.

It’s easy to see why local band ‘The Trees’ are forging a reputation that precedes them. Four incredibly talented musicians from Devon & Cornwall have come together to share their influences and experience, and create a new all-woman collective made up of renowned local artists Becca Langsford, Elani Evangelou, Alex Hart and Martha Nash. They take cues and influence from Folk, Country, Blues and contemporary pop music to form a sound that has both a warm familiarity, and ethereal intensity. Hushed harmonies, picked chords and passionate delivery are what these ladies trade in.

Love Saltash was fortunate enough to catch-up with Becca

Langsford, where we got an insight into the band and what makes The Trees grow.

LS: What prompted you all to take a side step away from your solo ventures into forming a band. And how is it different?

BL: We’ve all been friends for a long time, and have been involved in each other’s solo stuff in the past, so it was an easy decision to put the band together and play as a group.

We spent a lot of time listening to different music and talking about how we wanted The Trees to sound, and then we each put songs forward that we wanted to include in the set, which is a mix of covers and original material. We are all

MUSIC SCENE still working on our solo projects; Alex has just released an EP of original material, Elani and Martha have been writing together and Becca is planning on releasing a new record with Vince Lee this year.

LS: The band feels like a real sum of its parts, Is there a process you have developed for working on a song together?

BL: The emphasis of developing a song is usually based around the vocals - we decide who will take the melody line and subsequent harmony lines etc, and then build the instrumentation around it. We feel that having 4 singers in one band should be the focal point, and it allows us to each play on our strengths as vocalists. We’ve also been careful to consider who takes the main vocal on different tunes, so that there’s a fair balance between all of us taking the lead. So far it’s felt like a really collaborative process, and we all seem to be on the same page with trying out new ideas etc!

LS: Your music takes in blues, country and traditional folk influences as well as more modern sounds, do you feel there is a resurgence in these styles, and if so why do you think this is?

BL: I’m generally a bit wary of the term ‘resurgence’ as it can sometimes suggest that there has been a lack of those influences, in order for them to been seen as ‘coming back’.

I think that much of the modern music that we listen to, by artists such as Laura Marling or The Staves, often still shares a similar musical structure to songs written longer ago, by artists like Joni Mitchell. It seems like there are more artists currently who aren’t afraid to approach these genres from a more traditional viewpoint. There are definitely strong links to vocal harmonies in blues, gospel, country and folk, so I think we are naturally drawn to them as an inspiration for what we want to put out there as a band, and hope that people who come and listen to us play will share some of the same enjoyment that we get from performing it.

LS: Has being from the rural South Devon & Cornwall had an effect on your sound?

BL: We’d be lying if we said that we weren’t inspired by the beautiful place we live in. That said, angst is angst, whether you’re writing a song about it sat on a beautiful beach or in your bedroom… Perhaps what we are more inspired by, are the people who are part of the music scene in the Southwest.

There are many musicians who have supported us, played with us, come to our gigs and given us advice. We’re lucky that many of the gigs we have done so far have been well attended and audiences have been very respectful of the fact that we aren’t a loud band, even when we’ve been playing to a full pub. Between us we’ve also got strong family links to music in the South West. Elani’s grandfather Pete and uncle Greg, set up the infamous Van Dike Club in Plymouth, which played host to bands such as Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and John Lee Hooker. Becca’s Father, Ian, used to play harmonica in Plymouth at places like The Breakwater with his blues band, The Legal Eagles.

LS: What’s next for The Trees, do you have any exciting plans for the coming year?

BL: We’re currently booking up gigs for this year, which include some cool support slots and festival dates. We’d like to write some original material together, and then take that into a studio to produce our first record. We like the idea of putting on shows in places that aren’t exclusively music venues, and hope to involve other local bands in what we’re doing too. We’ve been booked to play some shows that celebrate female musicians, which is great as there are many awesome female players in the South West!

WILDLIFE WATCHING

MINUTES AWAY FROM HOME The Friends of Churchtown were set up when the Devon and Cornwall Wildlife Trust took over the stewardship of these beautiful fields from the Antony Estate, who own the land, just past the cemetery on the outskirts of Saltash.

A bunch of local enthusiasts for wildlife attended an open meeting to set up a friends group, and “Bob’s your Uncle”, they responded.

Bob and Jackie Austin act as a contact for the group which holds regular meetings and days in the open air at the Community Nature Reserve.

As Jackie explains, “Churchtown is a wonderful place to walk or exercise dogs, providing they are kept on leads in certain areas to protect nesting wildlife. We have seen new species introduced back into our ecology just by making sure that farming is done sensitively – we now have some rare wildflowers, and are introducing new seed on selected parts of waste ground.

“We also have an expert from the RSPB who comes along to some of our events to help us identify all the many species we are lucky to have here!”

On Saturday 17 February at 12.30 the Friends are meeting to help give the reserve a thorough clean.

Unfortunately no dogs this time – they aren’t great at picking up rubbish! Over the years the Reserve

has been purged of old tyres and flying tipping, now the main problem is dog poo bags dropped.

Dog owners, please take your bags away with you as they don’t decompose!

Jackie estimates the clean up to last about 2 hours – families are welcome and safety gloves and pickers are all provided.

There will be hot drinks and buns to end the event, kindly provided by the friends.

Future events to look forward to are a photography lesson run by Kay Wilson on March 17, making the most of the stunning views. Cost is just £2 for nonmembers and completely free if you join the Friends.

And the Friends hold a spectacular Discovery Day in July with displays from a falconer, and lots of other themed events to get the whole family enjoying this area of natural beauty on our back door.

PENTILLIE CASTLE: TV STAR! Pentillie Castle near Saltash has once again featured in the popular Sky series Delicious, starring Dawn French.

The first episode in the second series was screened between Christmas and New Year and continued through January.

The romantic drama, filmed amidst the stunning scenery of South East Cornwall, picks up a year after Leo’s death. Business is booming at the Penrose Hotel (Pentillie Castle) but life isn’t set to run smoothly for Gina (Dawn French) and Sam (Emilia Fox). Gina’s estranged father rocks up and a new chef causes a stir. And, as Sam turns 40, she decides it’s time for a shake-up. Iain Glen and Pentillie Castle

Pentillie Castle proved the perfect location for the hit show. Known for its weddings, shooting parties, business retreats and award-winning luxury B&B, the estate is situated less than an hour from Dawn French’s home in Cornwall.

During last summer, Sky film crews took over the stunning grounds of the award winning luxury bed and breakfast and events venue to film the series. Many of the hotel scenes were filmed all around the estate, including the kitchen garden, Victorian bathing hut and American Gardens. The front drive was even turned temporarily into a new formal garden for the show.

“It was brilliant to welcome the cast for a second series of the show,” said Sammie Coryton, managing director of Pentillie. “We were sworn to secrecy on set, but it was wonderful to see Dawn, Emilia and the cast and crew in action again and not mention some of the Pentillie team who featured as extras for some of the scenes! The first series was stunning and hugely enjoyable and we know the second one will prove an even bigger hit!”
