February is one of my favourite months - my birthday is in February, as is my Mum’s, my first grandchild’s and my eldest son - born on Valentine’s Day, which no romantic gesture has ever surpassed!

Relationships are our source of greatest joy, and our source of greatest heartache. But if you have loved ones in your life that you are speaking to right now (and of course you do, because you are a nice person!), make sure you give them an extra hug this month.

And believe me, sometimes that is all we need from each other. (Although a meal, some fizz and a bunch of flowers won’t be refused either!)

We have some beautiful and poignant stories in this edition that remind us that life is short and sometimes fragile. So make sure you share some love this month with those that love you back.

No one likes a rise in taxes, however figures show that the amount of money that councils have received from government have been slashed dramatically in recent years. Combined with a rise in health and social care costs, this gives councillors a real headache to balance the books and fund essential services.

Saltash Town Council have taken the burden of operating several services formerly funded by Cornwall Council, as Cornwall takes on its own burden of services formerly funded by National Government.

The Town Council now operates the Pontoon, four public toilet blocks, the Longstone Depot workshop, and its team of wardens responsible for maintenance and repairs. The renovation of the railway station building is also council led and should be completed by July 2019.

The Council are also hoping to take over the running of the library service by March 1 to continue to provide this service to the community, and to have The Maurice Huggins Room refurbished and up and running with a possible option of hiring the venue out to the community.

A spokesperson from the Town Council explained, “To be able to continue to preserve and maintain these services for the community we have had to increase the precept for 2019-2020 accordingly.

This is currently set to increase to £1,156,981 from £736,475 which will see an increase in council tax.

We have also had to precept extra to increase the capital reserves which the council holds to be able to cover any unknown costs of future devolved assets and to make sure we have appropriate levels of statutory contingency in place.”

All of the budgets across the different areas have been set using a cost based approach and adding 2.5% increase based on CPI.

A neighbourhood plan can be made by town or parish councils. Landrake with St Erney held a referendum on 8 November to decide whether to adopt its Plan, the final step in a five year process.

Fortunately for the organisers the referendum resulted in 276 ‘Yes’ votes to 23 ‘No’s. The Plan is a statutory document and has considerable weight, informing planning decisions within the area. It builds upon the Parish Plan and is the culmination of extensive research, opinion gathering and consultation within the Community. Landulph Parish Council is in hot pursuit with their plan at consultation phase. It can be viewed online and hard copies are available at Landulph School, Cargreen Yacht Club, Landulph Memorial Hall, and The Telephone Box Book Exchange, Cargreen.

local awards Each year Saltash Town Council, in conjunction with the Rotary Club, select a Saltash resident to receive the Saltash Citizen Award and, in 2017 for the first time, a Saltash Environmental Citizen Award. These go to a person who has served their community/environment in some special way. It could be an outstanding one-off contribution to the well-being of the Town or a period of service to the Town, not just in the prior year. However, they must still be active and cannot be an employee or member of Saltash Town Council. There is also a similar award for the Young Citizen, who should be under 21 and living in Saltash. Each recommendation should be accompanied by a note specifying reasons for the suggestion and contact details. Nominations should be sent to the town clerk at the Guildhall, or mayors-secretary@saltash.gov.uk by Friday 15 March

One way of helping Cornwall Council save money and manage its resources is to report empty homes. Empty properties are a wasted resource which could be used for much needed homes.

They can be an eyesore or cause other problems.

Whilst the Council has strict guidelines around when it can act, it is able to engage with and help owners of these properties bring them back into habitable use. More details, and how to report a property online at cornwall.gov.uk/housing

BRIDGING

THE TAMAR The Learning Centre currently being built at the Tamar Bridge is due to open in Easter 2019.

The ‘Bridging the Tamar’ project has been able to happen as a result of The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee receiving a grant of £272,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to interpret the heritage of both the Royal Albert Bridge and the Tamar Bridge, the remainder being funded by the Committee themselves.

An interactive exhibition space and a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) learning and events programme will bring the heritage of the iconic bridges to life.

The programme will be developed with local partners including The Box, schools, universities and community organisations.

Visitors will be able to find out more about how operators manage and monitor the road bridge, the Saltash Tunnel and the tolling system in order to keep traffic moving smoothly and provide safe, reliable and efficient crossings of the river.

Is 2019 the year to give something back?

Saltash and its surrounding areas are blessed with voluntary organisations of many types, from care of people in need, to sports and youth clubs, to environmental action groups to name just a few.

Thousands of hours each year are given up by individual people to support these. But there is still scope for more people to be involved, and for new ideas about what can be done by individuals acting together for the benefit of the local area.

At Community Enterprises PL12, we have provided opportunities for people to work at our Hub in Fore Street, to drive or assist with our Hopper buses, and to challenge the powers-that-be on health care issues. But we have also tried to be the link between individuals and other organisations needing volunteers. We are planning some informal recruitment days in the coming months to push forward with this.

We believe that volunteers should feel able to come forward on their own terms, offering the hours they wish, at the times they find convenient, and using the particular skills, interests and experience they already have. We also know that volunteers can learn and develop personally in such work, and currently Community Enterprises PL12 has a wide range of volunteer opportunities available, for example: • coordinating specific projects, eg promoting the SaltashCard with local businesses, creating regular publicity features for us, and also expanding our volunteer service.

I am thrilled to announce that local lady Lizzy Sharpe-Asprey has received the British Empire Medal for her service at the Saltash museum, this is a worthy recognition by the Crown.

Lizzy said that she had better purchase a new outfit and hat for the special occasion.

The citation reads for services to the museums in Saltash and South East Cornwall. Lizzy added that she hopes this, along with other awards the Saltash Heritage Museum has received, will give recognition and lift its profile.

Lizzy was one of the founder members of The Saltash Heritage in 1986 and they later settled into premises at 17 Lower Fore Street, opposite the Guildhall, in 1999. She devotes all her free time to the museum, creating displays and collections to feature local historic events and by making the museum a learning place. She also invites local schools and youth organisations to hear the history of Saltash, often giving them the opportunity to ‘dress up’ in costume, reinventing the past for our next generation to reflect upon and share.

The museum is a registered charity and an accredited museum with The Arts Council, England and has around fifty volunteers, whose support enables the museum to survive.

Lizzy added, ‘The volunteers are a brilliant group of people who have all contributed to me receiving this award. I was astounded that my peers at The Saltash Heritage and the nine museums in South East Cornwall put my name forward and I’m very honoured. I feel this is a recognition of all the work done by those volunteers who work in the museum, who I would love to thank from the bottom of my heart!’

Jane with her dog

DECLUTTERING HOME AND HEART

Jane Higgins’ Mum had been adopted twice during the War, and had had a really unhappy time. Jane believes that this was the catalyst for her Mum’s habit of never throwing anything away. This meant that when Jane came to do the difficult task of sorting through her belongings in order to sell the family home, she was faced with a mountain of emotional and physical clutter.

Despite the immensity of the process, Jane found an inner strength and ability to face the process, which would have surely drowned the more faint of heart. Amazingly too, despite her own twenty year battle with trauma and depression, she

found healing for herself in bringing her mum’s affairs to order.

Jane faced one job at a time, keeping the feeling of being trapped by all the mess at bay, and was ably supported by good friends and family throughout the long, arduous task. Bear in mind, this took months.

Friends and family were stunned by the progress Jane was making, as the bones of a lovely home were discovered under mounds of books, unopened purchases and paraphernalia, so much so that they asked Jane for her help too.

It was this that made Jane sit herself down to write

local news a book - a very practical, kind and compassionate account of how she sorted through memories, identified what was important, what to keep and how to pass on what was no longer needed.

The book, ‘Decluttering Made Easy’, is a combination of practical advice and personal insights, neither preachy nor long winded.

Jane herself has a ‘lived in home’ and keeps probably more than her long suffering husband would like her to. However, through becoming an enthusiastic declutterer, which she is very grateful to her late mum for, she feels she has a completely new attitude. She has more time in her life now to support causes she cares about - Livewire and Trematon WI - and she works at the St Luke’s charity shop in Saltash, where she indulges her new found skills by organising the donations.

Jane explains, “I literally feel like a different person. I feel as if I can breathe freely again! I feel

so much lighter as the weight created by stress in my head, neck and shoulders has vanished! I have always felt that something was holding me back, but I didn’t know what it was until it was gone.”

Many of us struggle to let go, often because things, or people, have been snatched from us against our will. Jane’s story is very easy to identify with, and a symbol of tremendous hope that difficulties can be overcome. Even if those difficulties cover every available surface, making it difficult to even open the door. Jane is signing her book on Wednesday 13 February at The Bookshelf on Fore Street between 10am and 12pm.

LISKEARD naval officer takes role at hms raleigh

A former pupil of Liskeard School has been appointed as Commander Training in HMS Raleigh to head up the training for the Royal Navy’s new recruits.

As a Training Management Officer, Commander (Cdr) Jeremy Ussher has significant experience of leading and managing Royal Navy and Defence training organisations. With appointments that have included department lead in HMS Collingwood, Hampshire, Head of Leadership in Britannia Royal Naval College, Devon, and most recently the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Defence College of Technical Training, also in Hampshire, he is well placed to take on his new role.

Cdr Ussher said: “The Royal Navy is a very exciting Service to be a part of at this point in time with the arrival of the new aircraft carriers, new ships and submarines in design and build, and the F35 having completed flight deck trials in the US. The role of HMS Raleigh is to train the future sailors who will be manning and supporting these assets, so, to be appointed to HMS Raleigh as Commander Training is an absolute privilege and honour. This appointment also carries additional significance for me as I grew up in Liskeard. It has been really enjoyable meeting the HMS Raleigh staff, especially those that have connections with my family who still live in the area.”

Cdr Ussher joined the Royal Navy in 2001 after

studying for GCSEs and A-Levels at Liskeard School and Community College, followed by a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Wales and training at Britannia Royal Naval College, and HMS Nelson, in Portsmouth. Deploying to Iraq in 2010 Cdr Ussher mentored the Iraqi Navy Training Commanders who were accountable for managing operations, engineering, logistics and commando training based at Umm Qasr.

Prior to joining HMS Raleigh, he spent seven months, assigned to the Combined Security Transition Command Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan. In charge of a multinational team of Officers, Cdr Ussher was responsible for supporting projects, which included improving the security of Kabul, reshaping the Afghan National Army and reforming elements of the Afghan National Police.

Cdr Ussher said: “I have very fortunately had an exciting and diverse military career to date that has allowed me to further myself professionally, academically and personally. I have been able to travel extensively and have had some amazing trips to Antarctica, the USA, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America. I have also been able to further myself academically achieving an MA in Defence Studies. Not bad for a kid from a small town in South East Cornwall.”

FUNDRAISER to GIVE VALENTINES GIFTS TO MAN’S BEST FRIEND Zero Gravity was established in September 2005 by Mo, providing recreational gymnastics, trampolining and fundamental coaching to primary school children within the Caradon area. Originating from a village hall, the demand highlighted the requirement for a permanent base which in 2008 resulted in a relocation to Dobwalls.

Established as a charity in August 2010, they currently offer a range of structured activities and training programmes throughout the year to both individuals, schools and organisations across Devon and Cornwall.

Their vision is to provide a permanent, purpose designed centre for sporting excellence in South East Cornwall, providing a facility for all in which every participant is given the opportunity to both

participate and excel in gymnastics, trampolining, freestyle and artistic sport.

They aim to provide an ultimate goal for the ambitious and for children to realise there is more to sport than exercise.

In case you thought exercise was just for humans, they are running a family dog show on Sunday 17 February, to raise funds to improve facilities. It will be held at Menheniot old school with doors opening at 11am. There will be a range of classes with pedigree and novelty such as happiest dog as well as a raffle, tombola and guess number of treats in the jar along with refreshments. It’s £1.50 per class and £1 a strip for the raffle. Come along and try and win some rosettes, from first to sixth place.

community news There are many remarkable people living in Saltash. We like to share their stories to prove that there are inspirational, amazing role models living right beside us, not just on TV and social media.

Amanda Trotman, from Saltash, is currently studying with The Open University towards a BA honours Open Degree. Alongside her commitments as a busy working mother, Amanda featured in the OU’s national marketing campaign earlier this year. Amanda’s story featured in national newspaper, Metro, and she was also interviewed for an OU Special Report Week on LBC about access to education in the UK. Amanda was running a small business from home when her husband passed away. She always knew that she wanted to study for a degree, but after becoming a widow, her commitments as a fulltime working mother meant that traditional study was not accessible to her.

Amanda says: “I chose to study with The Open University as it was the only way that I could achieve my goal, whilst still having the flexibility to maintain my job, provide for my children and

manage all the other commitments in my life.

“When I started studying my husband had just died and I had four young children – my eldest was thirteen and my youngest was three and so I couldn’t go off and leave them or stop working.

The OU offered me the best way possible to achieve my dream of studying for a degree, whilst still being there to support my children.”

“The main barrier for me was my confidence and trying to guide four children through their own grief. When my husband died, I lost a massive part of who I was, and my studies gave me something to temporarily fill that space. I had something else to hold on to and focus on instead of being in a black hole of bereavement.

“Looking back, I can see that my studies are what kept me going during the hard times over the past six years, and my confidence has grown so much as a result.”

On appearing in the university’s Special Report Week with LBC, Amanda said: “It’s been a truly amazing experience. I’m usually not someone who performs well in the spotlight, but it was such a rewarding experience and a real testament to the journey that I’ve been on in the last six years. My daughter listened to my interview and said how proud she was of me – which was very lovely to hear. It’s great for my kids to see me study and see something come out of it, which has been a real highlight for me.

“The experience has also been very validating. To be able to say I’m studying for a degree, I’m doing it by myself and I was part of this campaign - it feels great.”

safe harbour The Church of England Soldiers’, Sailors’ & Airmen’s Clubs (CESSAC) started providing a non-proselytising ‘home-from-home’ for service personnel in 1857.

In 1988, it forged a relationship with Crown Royal Naval Charity, Greenwich Hospital, to run Greenwich Court in Southsea, Trafalgar Quarters in Greenwich, and Greenwich Place in Saltash.

Any ex RN, RM, WRNS, QARRNS or RFA personnel, their spouses, partners, widows or widowers who are aged 60 or over can apply to move into its housing facilities.

Greenwich Place was built as part of the re-development of Wesley Methodist Church on the site of the original church building, with the original Church walls still acting as part of its boundary.

Opened in 1993, it has a ship shape, matter of fact style, suiting its’ naval association, with splendid and far reaching views from its upper decks (sorry, storeys).

Residents have access to a lovely lounge with kitchen, a more intimate shared space, laundry facilities, hairdressing salon, two guest bedrooms and a lift. Their personal living spaces are completely self-contained flats, with their own bathroom and kitchen and either single or double bedroom. (There is also one two bed flat).

There is a natural camaraderie amongst the residents, through shared experiences of Naval life, and many are extremely active volunteering in the scheme and in the wider community.

Recently, residents formed a

community news committee to project manage the refurbishment of both lounges; and several support a Dementia Friendly Veterans Group that meet in the Shado Centre, Saltash, with funding from Greenwich Hospital.

The decision to move into sheltered housing is one to be carefully considered. The flats are rented; applications are welcomed from anyone who meets the Greenwich Hospital allocations criteria; and this includes applicants who own their own property. However homeowners are expected to sell when taking up a tenancy. There is a pool of applicants and priority is determined by assessinng who is in the greatest need of housing, for reasons of health or other circumstances.

However, once made, the decision to move can bring with it a whole new lease of life!

Bridget, surrounded by friends and family at Christmas

Big-hearted Bridget made every moment count

If you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness every moment counts. So putting others before yourself and thinking how best you can help them in the time you have left takes a very special person.

Bridget Horrell, is not only locally well known as one of our greatest landladys, but her personality and charisma made friends of everyone who stepped

foot into her former pub, The Two Bridges.

It was at the pub which was run by Bridget and her supportive partner Keith where she became a true legend as a quizmaster. Her other passion, a love of colour and vibrancy was splashed all over the beer garden, with an array of different coloured furniture, with twinkling fairy lights for customers to enjoy.

Bridget retired from the pub business, hoping to have a well earned rest, but was recently given the devastating news that she had a terminal illness, a massive blow to both herself, partner Keith, family

charity news and close friends.

Even a huge personality like Bridget has to face defeat sometime, and she passed away on January 7, peacefully, at 10.30pm.

However, in true Bridget style, she died leaving a legacy of hope, determination, and passion for doing good for others, raising monies for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.

In an interview given to raise awareness for the great work St Luke’s achieve, shortly before her death, Bridget said, “Everything has happened very quickly since I was diagnosed, but I always thought, if something happened to me, I would want to be looked after by St Luke’s. They’re there for me and my family 24/7 when we need them and are helping us all the way. I could write a whole book about how amazing they are!’

This bespoke care included helping Bridget through pain management and symptom control so that she was as comfortable as possible, supplying her with a wheelchair so she could more easily get around, and bringing in a new bed. St Luke’s has also been supporting Bridget’s family – the ‘best thing in her life’ – including her partner, Keith, whom she met at school.

Despite her own diagnosis, Bridget fundraised for the charity by having her lovely locks shaved at the pub which she’d run for thirteen years. Plenty of loyal supporters cheered her on giving her the enthusiasm, encouragement and support to give something back to the charity who had supported her! Brave Bridget was quoted as saying, “My head shave has been my way of saying thank you and trying to help other people who need their compassionate care, too.” She raised £392 on that December afternoon.

Bridget’s charity endeavours didn’t stop there.

Just before Christmas her greatest friends Liz and Lee Fedrick decided it was a ‘good’ time to organise a ‘final quiz’, with none other than Bridget herself as the ultimate and ‘fancy free style’ quiz master. Again she had us all laughing in our seats, Bridget wouldn’t have minded us saying that pronunciations of words were not easy for her, and it was such a giggle to hear her words and phrases that were totally muddled up.

In the weeks before her death, Bridget raised over a staggering £2000 for St Luke’s charity from coffee mornings, head shave, quizzes and Facebook campaigns.

St Luke’s Specialist occupational therapist Shaen Milward said: “I was bowled over by Bridget when I met her. She was so full of life and great fun to be around. Even though she was really poorly, she was all about enjoying life and giving back as well.

She really was a very special person who’s made every moment count in the time she had left.”

Bridget left behind two girls Stacey and Rebecca, and two grandchildren Alfie and Noah who will proudly remember her still joking and laughing, “keeping smiles on all our faces, always in high spirits.”

Every year, St Luke’s cares for over 3,500 patients at end of life and needs to raise at least £4million to provide this vital service across the community.

keep dancing and romancing!

Sally Dunn has been dancing since a little girl, winning trophies throughout her career either solo, as part of the TJs, a dance act with a difference which is still going strong, or pouring her love of moving into the people she teaches.

Meeting Sally, you would never guess that she is approaching 60, until you witness the photographic evidence of her decades of performance. (Sorry Sally, you’ve been rumbled!)

She attributes her success to being taught by Bob Tanner, who danced and DJ’d in the 1960s on Union Street and taught with Victor Silvester.

Bob Tanner, at a sprightly 80 something, is not just an expert teacher, he moves with welloiled grace, something that he contributes to more than 60

years of teaching dance in the Plymouth area.

Perhaps there was a time back in the day when you danced to dawn, but you feel those times are gone.

You need to think again.

Some of the couples Bob and Sally continue to teach are well past retirement. One gentleman who had a recent stroke was bought vouchers by his daughter to attend some classes. There was a dramatic improvement in his health, and he is now able to swish around the dance floor, “holding my wife like I used to”.

Sally, explains, “Even if you think you have two left legs and no sense of rhythm, you may well be pleasantly surprised.

Saltash Rugby Club held their annual Charity Pram Race on New Year’s Day, for local lad Freddie Libby the beneficiary of the event, which has been running for well over 40 years.

Fred’s mum Kate explained, “Freddie is one of our trio, the ‘Little Libs Team’. Our boys love rugby, Alfie plays for the U15s at Saltash RFC; Fred, our middle son has always been a quite shy little boy.

“During the summer last year,

on a family trip to London, Fred suddenly became really poorly with a headache and dizziness. Once arriving home his symptoms became far too regular. Like any parent you become concerned, but we never expected to hear such dreadful news. We took Freddie for an MRI scan and the Consultant at the hospital confirmed that Fred’s had a large tumour on his brain.”

Shaun and Kate’s world felt like it had fallen apart for their beautiful boy who looked so perfect from the outside.

What? Why? How? Were the first questions they asked.

They were told to go straight to Bristol Hospital immediately.

S FUNDS FOR FRED underwent a nine hour operation to take a biopsy of his tumour and surgeons carried out further work on another cyst that was just above the growth. After the longest week ever, they were told that Fred had a ‘Pilomyxoid Astrocytoma’ tumour grade 1. This was good news, no cancer! However, it was found attached to a very dangerous and vulnerable part in Fred’s brain, therefore, they were told that a course of 12-18 month of chemotherapy was needed after another 11 hour operation.

Life has completely changed for the Libby

family. This is just the start of a succession of treatments for the little chap, if the tumour cannot be removed safely, Fred’s eyesight and hearing are at risk should it grow bigger.

The Pram Race Organising Committee at Saltash Rugby Club expressed their sincere thanks to staff at the Pubs and Clubs of the Town for their kind support of the event.

overflowing generosity from saltash folks

Saltash Baptist Church welcomed 40 people to come and enjoy a Christmas Day meal. We had a range of people, some old, some young, some married, some single, but all of them would have experienced some form of wanting to be part of a bigger group of people than they would have been.

We ate a three course meal, which was cooked by Bob, Neil and Don from the church with help from many different people. We sang carols together, had a chocolate quiz and even sang some silly songs together.

There was much laughter and joy and people were really grateful.

The thing I love about this day is that it is not just the church that brings it together, it is a real community meal that so many people help towards. I would like to express a thank you to Waitrose who supplied all our food and even

sent one of their partners over to help us serve and wash up. A thank you to Co-Op who instead of giving presents to their fellow colleagues in store gave presents to those who attended, there were many presents and these were so gratefully received by people. So many people from the community gave donations, both financially and in gifts. Danielle Frith collected a lot of treats and food which meant people were able to go away with little food parcels as well. Organisations like the members of U3A gave financial contributions along with many individuals.

We were inundated with offers of help, which in the end we had to start saying no to people helping!

We collected more money than we had to spend so we are able to send ÂŁ300 to Saltash FoodBank to support the amazing work they do.

A huge thank you Saltash. You made sure that people would not be alone this Christmas Day, you made sure that they went away, full, happy and with gifts that shows them that people care.

Smart kids in london

Children from SMART’s three primary schools have enjoyed an action-packed educational trip to London, exploring the city over the course of a week.

Year 6 pupils from Dobwalls, Landulph and Trewidland made the most of the trip, visiting a number of museums, the Houses of Parliament, as well as finding time to visit the West End to take in a performance of Aladdin. Students from Trewidland were particularly impressed with the Genie, who flossed and dabbed during the performance!

On their visit to the Houses of Parliament, pupils met Sheryll Murray MP, who gave them a guided tour. Greg from Dobwalls even found out that there is a secret toilet in the Queen’s robing room, which only she is allowed to use!

After four busy days, all headed home early on the Friday morning. On the way back to Cornwall, the coach stopped off at Stourhead, for all to stretch their legs in the beautiful grounds. Some even ventured inside the house, where, as Grace from Dobwalls found out, there is a library that holds over 6000 books!

Pupil behaviour throughout the week was fantastic and their feedback has been great.

Poppy from Landulph said she loved London and would definitely go again, saying that they ‘went to so many new places, and saw some incredible things’, and that ‘it is definitely worth the seriously long drive up!’

As well as the opportunity to visit a number of world famous landmarks, pupils had a great time meeting other children from their fellow primaries and forming new friendships.

This is the second year this trip has run, and follows on from the successful visit to London in October 2017.

SMART’s CEO Mr Buckley commented, “During one of our first MAT Student Council meetings, a child from Trewidland came up with the idea of this joint trip which makes it even more pleasing to hear how much they enjoyed it again this year and how much they learned from it.

We are so fortunate to have excellent staff volunteers who are keen to give their time freely to enable such opportunities to take place.”

cornwall college Students visit Children’s Hospice South West Access to Nursing, Health and Social Care and Childhood Studies students at Cornwall College Saltash visited Children’s Hospice South West as part of the Widening Participation project.

The Widening Participation through Skills Project aims to improve pathways from vocational programmes to higher education and to increase access for all to higher level skills training through innovative and flexible access routes which address barriers to participation.

A visit to the Hospice is particularly inspirational for students who might think that they do not possess the skills to access higher education. Access Lecturer, Norma Barrett, said it was an “interesting and emotional experience for the students.”

“The amazing work of the Children’s Hospice is always a revelation and inspires us to get involved.

The visit cemented learning, showing how it is used to make a real difference to others lives.”

Children’s Hospice South West provides care

for children with life-threatening conditions by providing children’s hospice and professional family support services. According to one of the students, Amanda Smith, the facilities at Little Harbour are “amazing”.

“The rooms are beautiful. The staff that showed us around were wonderfully informed and the whole hospice had a lovely feel,” she continued.

“Little Harbour would be a fantastic charity for us to support with our fundraising in the future.”

Access to Nursing student, Sally Harrison, said all of “the rooms were wonderful and fully engaging”.

“The visit was a real eye opener to see care out of a formal clinical setting,” she continued.

“The whole experience has made me think how rewarding it would be to work in a hospice.”

INSPIRATION IN THE CLASSROOM Saltash.net community school has teamed up with a well-known Cornish based children’s author to improve and encourage reading and literacy at the school.

Chris Higgins is responsible for the My Funny Family series of books for young readers, as well as several series of older teen fiction. She has won a number of awards including Young Minds, the Lancashire Book Award, the Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Award, the KYBA, and she has been shortlisted twice for Queen of Teen.

Chris first visited saltash.net in July to talk to students about her book ‘A Boy Called Ocean’ and returned in November to launch the Patron of Reading Initiative and to talk to Year 8 and Year 10 students about the process of crafting language and creating a novel.

Students had the opportunity to ask Chris questions about the writing process, and where she finds inspiration. Year 10 students were treated to an especially useful lecture on the

writer’s craft and how Chris selects the right words to use, which forms part of the English Language exam that they will tackle next year.

Chris will be working closely with the Library team and the English Department over the next two years, in order to bring a love of reading and creative writing to all students and is running a competition to write the best first line of a story.

The winner will receive a signed copy of one of her books and the best 10 entries will be posted on her website.

Chris said,” I was thrilled to be asked to become the Patron of Reading for Saltash.net Community School. I’m looking forward very much to working closely with the school, helping them develop and promote new literacy initiatives while building on the incredible work that is already taking place.”

amazing talent in the performing arts. The cast includes a variety of experienced and new performing arts students and it is great to see them demonstrating outstanding teamwork, pulling together to put on a great performance for their friends, family and the general public.

I would like to say congratulations to the all of the members of the cast, who were committed to coming to rehearsals over a period of many months to create a professional show. Also a huge thank you to all the teachers involved, who all worked hard to help the students perform the musical to the best of their abilities. None of it could have happened without them.

The following day the year 10’s supervised and trained Year 8’s in the techniques they had learnt. Many pupils from both years spoke out over the days in front of everyone, gaining a huge step in self-acceptance, which teachers were proud to see.

Overall each year group say they enjoyed the week and the Year 10’s said the whole course gave everyone a voice and a stronger sense of each other’s characters.

Isobel Shut Down the Stigma Showcase byWhitt am

Recently we hosted a charity showcase - “Shut Down the Stigma” - raising money for the charity Stem 4 and promoting an awareness of mental health. The event was organised by former 6th formers Kari Summers and Danielle Burnard, who ran a similar showcase last year. This time, the event raised over £1,000 for the charity, beating last years’ total of £780.

Students from all year groups demonstrated a variety of their talents in front of an audience of nearly 100. Some of the acts included a gymnastics routine, rapping, singing and many other musical talents. The performing students went through an audition process and rehearsals to wow their audience with their talent.

With the focus of the evening being the mental health of teenagers, between each act a selection of students

presented a short speech, including statistics and advice for those in need and how to help people suffering from a mental health issue. A raffle was also run, with over thirty local businesses generously donating a range of prizes. Some performing students even put their baking skills to the test for refreshments served during the interval.

The students demonstrated all core values of the school, including their large display of empathy towards the charity throughout the evening.

A big thank you should also go to Mr Wieprecht who helped organise the event alongside the former students. Also huge congratulations to all the students involved with the night who helped raise large amounts of money for a fantastic cause.

Saltash Environmental action

- REBELS with a cause

environmental news SEA, Saltash Environmental Action, punch above their weight! Their activities include attending demonstrations in the capital to more sedate meetings in the town hall. Their aim is to make sure the general public take their message seriously as they lead the way in getting us all to change our behaviour.

Members of SEA took part in the first major directaction event in Extinction Rebellion’s short life. XR, an international social movement, was formed in October when over 100 academics signed a call to action by nonviolent protests. Their aims are threefold, the government must tell the people the truth about climate change, enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and create a National Citizens Assembly to oversee these changes.

Following a full day of training on the legal issues of civil disobedience and in what was expected during the protests, sea members then were part of closing five major London bridges, by peaceably sitting on the tarmac.

“It was an emotional day for everyone as people who had been trying for years to get strong action to counter climate change began to feel that at last we were really showing the government that for the sake of our children. grandchildren and all other species we could stand for inaction no longer.”

more and more local people who want to know how they can be part of this growing movement, even if they’re not the protesting type.

At last month’s meeting, Jackie Young from Environment Plymouth talked on how they helped turn the Plymouth Waterfront into a ‘Plastic-Free’ community. The main target is single-use plastic, and the standards that have to be met to claim Plastic-free status are set by Surfers Against Sewage.

Jackie challenged Saltash to do the same. The audience seemed up for it, and SEA is already considering how to take this forward.

At the same meeting Ellie Jackson spoke about her series of children’s books. Ellie was impressed by the joy on her children’s faces when a turtle was nursed back from the brink of death when a piece of plastic was blocking its gullet. So impressed that she wrote a book about it; and then a second, on another true story of a puffin snared by a loop of plastic, and a third about a whale entangled in fishing gear. These books are being used in many homes and schools and encourage environmental awareness among six-to-eight year olds. Ellie is currently crowd-funding a project to bring the books into every school in Cornwall.

Helen Roberts’ study, Nasturtiums, is, at first glance, just red and green. But look at those greens. The paler yellowish greens of the leaves fight for attention against the darker bluer greens of the background. Using this variation of hue allows the picture to stay ‘mainly green’, avoiding a distracting third background colour, and leaving the magic to come from the bold reds of the flowers. Red is ‘complementary’ to the green; it’s the opposite colour on the spectrum and, because of that, it sings out with maximum contrast.

Imagine the picture with lemon-yellowy flower heads; imagine the difference.

A blue picture if ever we saw one. But the complementary to blue is orange. See how those orangey, golden yellows make this painting zing.

New Musical Theatre Opportunities for Saltash

Local university graduate Florence Bonner, who studied at Chichester University, and successfully graduated in September 2018, is now excited to share her wealth of expertise and knowledge by offering Musical Theatre and Theatre Studies to like-minded aspiring students in Saltash.

A competent performer herself, Florence has an abundance of experience within the performing arts which stems right back to when she was just

four years old, it was very obvious then that her love of the performing arts was in her blood from such a young age.

Her performance and musicality experiences include - performing as a soloist at the pre Music of the Night shows at the Royal Citadel supporting Hospital Radio, guest performances far and wide, compiling a musical CD for charity and thus raising thousands of pounds. She also worked with the

MUSIC SCENE UK’s top musical directors and producers for the National Youth Music Theatre, by passing a stringent audition and taking their professional performances to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the New Town Theatre. The show was successfully awarded 4/4 stars from the Musical Theatre Review, The Scotsman and The Guardian to name just a few arts tabloids. From Flo’s performances with the cast of Not The End Of The World, she was awarded a Grade 8 certificate in Musical Theatre by Trinity College, London. Florence said that she was, ‘Absolutely enthralled and privileged to work with so many experienced and professional theatre practitioners and cast. My invaluable experiences have put me in good stead to teach Musical Theatre to a very high standard.’

More recently since graduating, Florence has worked alongside and collaborated with a very talented local director, Julian Barnicoat, she was able to conduct and instruct the cast for the WW1 and Suffragette workshops for the Saltash musical premier of ‘Blood Red Rose, which was written, composed and sung as lead vocalist by Julian.

This show was very well received by a packed audience.

Over the years, Flo has won numerous trophies at local Music Festivals, she felt humbled and yet very fortunate to have been taught by a well respected

singing teacher and ex South West Opera Society member Miss Bronwen Davies (Bronwen Speare) who enabled Flo to pass her musical exams with the London Music Society.

Flo added, “Having studied music and theatre for the best part of my life, I now feel I have invaluable skills and experience to teach and inspire other likeminded students, who have a passion to pursue their own interest and skills in musical performances.

“I was fortunate to have an excellent A level drama teacher from Saltash.net – Mrs Jo Loyn’, and was grateful to have such an incredible and supportive teacher. Flo also benefitted immensely from her theatre training at the ESSA School of Drama in Saltash, winning various cups and trophies.
