A very Happy Easter Season to you all.

It’s certainly a time of rapid changes on every level – nature is exploding at the seams with new growth, and it also appears that institutions that have been strong and stable for centuries are bursting under the pressures of being fit for purpose in this new, strange century.

The World Wide Web came into public use just 30 years ago, the first smart phone was launched 20 years ago and Facebook just celebrated its 15th birthday.

In Saltash, we have a significant new development opening this month on the edge of Carkeel roundabout that will bring opportunities and threats to our community.

These unsettled times can either cause us to pull away from each other in fear or make us come

together to find new ways of creating the kind of environment and society we want to live in.

One reason for liking Love Saltash is that we endeavour to have articles from all walks of lives, all ages and interests so we can learn from each other and share common aspirations and ideas.

We have so much to learn from the generation who is able to give over large amounts of free time in retirement to do amazing voluntary work in our area.

And we have so much to learn from those young people who are celebrating success and campaigning for the issues that matter the most to them.

And we have so much to learn from you, our readers, about what is important to you. We love to hear from you, so please get in touch. It’s what keeps Love Saltash alive.

The Cornish Cross at Saltash was designed by the sculptor Simon Thomas, and was originally intended to be a Millennium monument. Instead it was built and erected in April 2013 as part of the Elwell Woods project, a community woodland created on what had formerly been wasteland.

The Cross stands to the right of the Tamar Bridge and is seen daily by thousands of motorists crossing into Cornwall. It is illuminated at night.

The future of Saltash Library and Information Service has been safeguarded after being transferred to Saltash Town Council on March 1 as part of a new agreement with Cornwall Council.

The arrangement, which is part of Cornwall Council’s devolution programme, means the building on Callington Road will continue to provide all the key services essential to a modern library as well as access to a range of Council services.

Saltash Library is remaining part of the countywide service meaning customers will keep their existing library cards and can still visit, borrow and order books online from other libraries in Cornwall.

The Chairman of the Town Council Library Sub Committee, Cllr Dent said: “Saltash Town Council is looking forward to working with the library staff to continue their great work for the people of Saltash. The building will have some work done on it and we intend to support all the current activities. As a Council, we look forward to a bright and happy future for our library.”

Edwina Hannaford, Cornwall Council Cabinet Members for Neighbourhoods, explained that in these challenging financial times, Cornwall Council - like all local authorities throughout the UK - has had some tough decisions to make when faced with massive cuts in funding from central Government.

Cllr Hannaford said: “We are delighted that Saltash Library and Information Service has been secured for the community and many more generations of library users will be able to benefit from all it has to offer.

“Libraries are important to our residents and this

60 students in Year 10 sat the exam and have performed really well as a cohort, scoring well above national average.

fundraising for

cancer research Tamar Valley AONB’s Monitoring & Reporting Officer, Jo Pridham, was awarded Champion of the Year at Cornwall Council’s Health, Safety & Wellbeing Conference.

Jo became a Health Champion 18 months ago, and in that time has achieved a great deal. A ‘Making Every Contact Count’ training event, T’ai Chi sessions and Yoga classes were held at the Tamar Valley Centre last year (yoga still continues) and the team visited Sylvia’s Meadow in St Ann’s Chapel to see the orchids during 30 Days Wild. Jo has introduced the team to ‘walking meetings’ and a ‘happy new year calendar’ where you aim to do something positive each day.

On the Devon side, Jo has sourced funding through Connecting Actively to Nature (Active Devon) for a weekly walking group in Bere Alston, sits on the Naturally Healthy Forum through the Devon Local Nature Partnership, and is a representative on the Tavistock Health & Wellbeing Alliance.

One issue that is very close to Jo’s heart is that of social isolation. For a number of years the AONB team has been looking into ways of tackling this issue. The walking groups help to some extent, as well as a new weekly Donations Café held at the Tamar Valley Centre. Jo supports volunteer opportunities and looks to maximise the social aspect wherever she can.

Jo was nominated and awarded Champion of the Year 2019 by the Health, Safety and Wellbeing

The Vocational & Work-related Studies students from Cornwall College Saltash took part in a 10k sponsored walk of laps from the College to the Tamar Bridge, a bake sale and a sponsored silence.

Student Empathy Tubbritt, said they were “really proud of completing the 10k walk.”

“We were really tired but it is great to be part of a group to raise money for Cancer Research.”

Team Lead for Vocational & Work-related Studies at Cornwall College Saltash, Roxy Kilmurray, said she is “so proud of the hard work that was put in to raise this fantastic amount of money for charity.”

“The activities also supported the learners during their assignment so the skills they used help to determine their final grade at the same time as supporting this amazing charity.

CEPL12 NEWS

Since the beginning of November, Community Enterprises PL12 has been running a pilot scheme on the Hopper Link Service around Saltash every Wednesday.

The Pilot scheme has proved very popular, so now it’ll be taken a stage further by modifying the timetable to suit the needs of the people of the town (find the new timetable on page 65).

The Hopper now takes people from as close as their homes as possible to Saltash Town Centre, and then out to the industrial estates where they can shop at Waitrose, B&M, Lidl and eventually the new Carkeel Gateway site, which will provide an opportunity to have a coffee at Costa or a meal at McDonalds, and whatever else may be placed there.

This has become a social event with the passengers, and they do all their shopping before or after they’ve had a chat over coffee or lunch.

They can take a stroll over the bridge at Waitrose to visit each site or take a tour around Tamar View Nurseries.

In addition to this service, a weekly day trip service out of Saltash is still continuing, visiting your favourite places in Devon and Cornwall. You can find out more on page 65.

The group bookings have been very busy, with Saltash groups booking the bus for their individual requirements. There are over 140 organisations in Saltash from Beaver Scouts to Senior Citizens groups - which keeps the Hopper and CEPL12 on their toes!

community news Pentillie Castle are renowned for doing things differently.

A prize draw for the Wedding of your Dreams was held at their recent Wedding Fair, that was indulgently generous from both the venue, and their suppliers.

Forty one couples entered to be in with a chance of winning their special day at Pentillie. The draw took place at 3.30pm where entrants, visitors and exhibitors gathered round in anticipation!

Sammie Coryton, owner of Pentillie Castle took to the microphone – after thanking everyone for such a fabulous day, Sammie dipped her hand into the box of entries, had a good mix up and pulled out the winners… Colin May and Rachel Franklin!

Tears started flowing from the Pentillie Weddings team as Colin and Rachel had been to the Castle the very day before to have an appointment with Lisa, wedding coordinator. They returned to the wedding fair the next day to try their luck at winning the wedding of their dreams… who knew that 24 hours later their dreams would become reality!

Colin and Rachel had left the event just 15 minutes before the winners were announced – with visitors and exhibitors gathered round in anticipation, Sammie gave them a call and put them on loud speaker to tell them the good news – there was disbelief, a bit of silence and then some very excited and emotional cheers from the couple as well as the crowd! When asked if they could turn around and come back, Colin and Rachel did so immediately!

Cooking has never been a chore for Saltash raised Maria Volkova, after beating thousands of other competitors to win her place on the very popular television series Master Chef.

Russian born Maria, moved to Saltash when she was just ten years of age with her mum Larisa and older sister Kseniva. She was a pupil at Bishop Cornish Primary School and Saltash.net.

A passion for cooking has always interested Maria from a young age. Her mother and stepfather

previously owned Kelly’s Fish & Chip Shop in Saltash and a successful seafood restaurant in Callington.

Maria would help out with the family businesses in her spare time and always enjoyed the hustle and bustle of ‘kitchen life’. Maria would go on to try out her own recipes and experiments, and used to encourage everyone to see which foods they could deep fry in batter. We can only imagine the outcome, in fact, on one occasion Maria added, ‘I did have an epic ‘fail’ once, when all the chocolate from a Dairy Milk was deep-fried and the chocolate leaked out into the chip oil, as a

community news consequence, we had to shut the shop down for the rest of the day, I was banished from the fryer there on after for a while!’

However, Maria’s keenness to experiment never went away, being a proper ‘foodie’, when Maria moved to London to attend University, she undoubtedly, was very popular with all her student friends, as she’d often cook for them and host dinner parties. After graduating, Maria and her boyfriend Tom (whom she met at Saltash.net), both had office jobs in London and spent their entire disposable income Maria and boyfriend on sampling food at Tom at Saltash.net various restaurants and had the opportunity to travel to many different countries with a distinct food culture.

They have both experienced and enjoyed cookery classes in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Japan and Indonesia.

It was Tom’s friends who encouraged Maria to apply for MasterChef, as Maria talked nonstop about food and she constantly spammed the programmes social media feeds with pictures of her successful dishes and cuisines.

After talking to Maria, it became apparent that she is a very passionate person when it boils down to her cooking, but her modesty and kindness is just the icing on the cake, and we are

Saltash United Football Club are having a pretty good season out on the pitch. They are hoping to improve and develop further and are looking to fill the following vacancies. You don’t have to wear football boots to be part of the team!

Club Chairman

The Chairman is ultimately the leader of the Football Club. The Chairman must be able to inspire confidence in the leadership of the club and be able to lead the Club Committee who perform the vast bulk of the week to week responsibilities. The Vice Chairman supports the Chairman and deputises for him/her when absent. The duties of the Chairman and Vice Chairman will include, but not be limited to: • Provide leadership and direction for the club.

• Make decisions for the benefit of the whole club including disciplinary matters.

• Oversee the work of the Club Committee.

• Chair meetings of the club.

• Advocate of the football club for the local community.

• Overview of all football and social club matters.

• Liaise with club management team when required, on football matters for all current Saltash United football teams.

Football Secretary The Football Secretary is the main point of contact within the club for the league and responsible for representing the club in league matters and ensuring all affiliation and club administration required by the league is carried out as required.

The duties of the Football Secretary will include, but not be limited to: • Responsible for clubs Whole Game System with regards to players discipline, affiliation and more.

• Responsible for the preparation and completion of player registrations and transfers in line with league and FA guidelines.

• Management of First Team, Reserve Team and Development Team fixture lists.

• Completion of all League and FA pre-match and post-match documentation.

• Regular liaison with league officials, FA officials and opposition officials on various aspects of football administration.

Over £120,000 to local causes

In last month’s Love Saltash we published a version of this story that might have confused some people, because the photo we ran was of the presentation of a cake and not a cheque!

Clearly our editor needs an urgent appointment at the optician!

We’ve updated the story below as the Waitrose scheme has done so much to benefit local causes since it began in 2008. We thought it deserved a second mention!

Since 2008, Waitrose and Partners Saltash has donated more than £120,000 to around 360 good causes in and around Saltash including children’s charities, support groups and volunteer-run organisations.

The scheme is well known to shoppers. At the checkout, customers are given a green token which they can place in one of three boxes at the store’s exit, each allocated to a different local cause. At the end of the month, £1,000 is shared amongst them as a proportion of the number of tokens they’ve received.

During April, Waitrose & Partners Saltash will support Plymouth and District Bowel Cancer Support, Plymouth Regional Head and Neck

Cancer Support Group and Next Step Stroke Club from Liskeard as its three local causes.

A number of the charities and community groups who have received donations as part of the supermarket’s scheme joined the shop’s partners on Wednesday 16 January for a tea party to mark the anniversary (as in the correct photo above!)

Partner and branch manager Laura Grant, commented: “It’s fantastic to celebrate this significant ten year milestone. We’re very proud to be able to play our part in the community and support those causes that matter most to local people. We look forward to helping many more in the coming years.”

Waitrose and Partners also provides staff volunteering hours each year. This has seen staff volunteering at many local community and charitable groups and supporting events for people who are otherwise on their own during the Christmas period.

SALTASH MAYFAIR IS BACK AGAIN!

saltash mayfair The inimitable Saltash May Fair will unfold in the town’s centre on 4 May. This year’s edition is being organised by a new team of volunteers from the Saltash Chamber of Commerce but will still retain that glorious atmosphere of family fun and will still be in our town’s retail centre and Longstone Park.

The fun will start at 10am when the Parade of Youth proudly marches from Longstone Park to the stage at the bottom of Fore Street. There will be Maypole dancing before the event is officially opened and an unsuspecting citizen is awarded with the Unsung Hero Trophy. Look out for your chance to join in Maypole dancing with Flash Mob action throughout the day! The fun will spill over in to Victoria Gardens with a dog show from 12 noon.

One of the main responsibilities of the organising team is to make sure there is enough money to stage the event – about £7,000. A grant has been received from Saltash Town Council, but more

money still needs to be found. So, the cash prize raffle, which was such a resounding success last year, will be back. The first prize of £200 has been donated by Quora, developers of the new Saltash Retail Park by Carkeel Roundabout, with further cash prizes donated by The Bookshelf, Computech, West Country Skip Hire and ADS Gas. Look out for the Treasure Map of Saltash, too: Saphira Jewellers has donated a silver token worth £100, which has been ‘buried’ in Saltash somewhere. Buy a square for £1 and buy yourself the chance of unearthing the treasure token, which can then be spent in Saphira Jewellers. You’ll be helping to support the costs of staging May Fair, too.

With over 100 food and retail stalls plus live music and dancing from local talent throughout the day, the May Fair promises to be an event to remember, a celebration of community and business in Saltash. Tamar Trotters – Your Local, Friendly Running Club

If you’ve ever seen a group of runners pounding the streets of Saltash on a Tuesday and Thursday night, it’ll probably be members of local running club - Tamar Trotters.

Tamar Trotters is a friendly, multi-faceted club, which has over 250 members and caters for all ages and abilities, from the absolute beginner to the

experienced marathon runner. The club offers a variety of training sessions, with the main club nights taking part on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Tuesday evenings aim to improve running performance with specially tailored sessions that look to improve endurance and aerobic capacity. Thursday evenings comprise a steady run around Saltash and occasionally

community news across the bridge into Plymouth. All runners are organised into training groups, depending on ability and each group is assigned a group leader who ensures that everyone stays together and no one is left to run alone.

As well as the main club nights, Tamar Trotters also run a very successful couch to 5k (C25K) programme, which takes place on Friday evenings.

C25K is a structured ten week programme for absolute beginners who want to run to improve their fitness, but do not know where to start.

Friday nights with the club involve a mixture of walking and running, which gradually builds fitness and stamina, with encouragement and support every step of the way. On a Friday evening, there is a catch up run for those who cannot make the main club nights and for those who want to get the miles in, there are regular long distance runs on a Sunday morning.

Trotters Chairman, John Smith, says: “Whatever your level, deciding to join a running club is one of the best things you can do. Here at Tamar Trotters, we can offer a great group running experience with fantastic support and advice from experienced group leaders; the chance to enter local races – whatever your ability, and the opportunity to make new friends.”

Tamar Trotters also caters for younger athletes with their highly successful and popular Junior Athletics Club. These training sessions take place on a Wednesday evening at Saltash.Net and cater for any athlete between the age of seven and 15 years. The sessions are run by UK Athletics qualified coaches and comprise training in running, jumping and throwing activities, all aimed at developing athletic ability in a progressive and fun way, in a safe, supportive environment. Junior members are also able to compete in sports hall competitions, road runs, fun runs and cross country races.

What’s A PPG? Chris Phillips is chair of the Patient Participation Group (PPG) at Saltash Health Centre.

A PPG hears feedback from patients, gives information regarding new resources and introduces additional support to work towards the best care and user experience for patients.

All practices in South East Cornwall have a PPG and the Chairs of each group meet regularly to share information and look at changes within our Health Services in Cornwall. More information on the PPG Noticeboard in the waiting room.

The Group at Saltash Health Centre has eight members currently – you only need to be a patient to join. They meet every two months with the Practice Manager and a GP and put in a lot of voluntary hours on a variety of projects. They have no funding, so need to raise their own funds as well.

The Lifestyle Course is one project that was introduced two years ago after talking to patients with long term conditions that impacted daily life. People with Diabetes, Sleep Apnoea, COPD, weight issues etc have often had to give up or limit previous activities which can in some cases lead to isolation and anxiety. Patients told the PPG that whilst they had good medical attention, they sometimes felt on their own, struggling to know

how to make lifestyle changes they knew they needed to make.

The Course helps bring together like minded people who have chronic conditions for one hour a week over six weeks and is led by members of the PPG with support from experts. Patients found the relationships they had formed so worthwhile that they wanted to continue meeting, so there is an informal Lifestyle Café every month in the Leisure Centre.

As one of the largest practices in the area, with almost 13,000 patients, Saltash Health Centre is piloting e.consult to help reduce waiting time for appointments by allowing patients to voice their concerns via an online form. They will be replied to by a Clinician within 24 hours. The Centre also has four paramedics on hand, able to make assessments and give advice for less serious ailments, with a GP always on hand for further consultation if needed.

There is a PPG post in the waiting room for patients. Contact for any reason appropriate for the PPG. We welcome contact from patients; it is the communication link between patient and practice.

community news A spate of fund raising on the water recently has raised much needed funds for an important cause.

Tragedy struck a local St Germans family when their 22 year old son Tom died from an unexpected sudden cardiac event in September 2015, just as he was starting a new job, had a new flat in Bristol and was preparing to join the Royal Navy.

It took the family eight months to discover that Tom had suffered Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS).

Mum, Ann Demaine explains, “We have learned a lot in the past three years about these conditions and last year, when we had found the verve to speak out, we decided that we needed to do something to prevent such tragic deaths and the heartache that follows for the families. We found out that Tom would have been one of at least 12 people under 35 that week who died; that 8 out of 10 people, like Tom, would have had no prior symptoms; and most importantly, that almost 90% of these deaths could be prevented by having a simple ECG (read by the right, experienced eyes) and appropriate treatment given. With no warning symptoms, the only way to prevent these deaths is by screening.

“Fortunately, the screening team from the Inherited Cardiac Conditions Team at St George’s Hospital, London can be booked to come to our locality but, until the Government funds this screening programme, it is down to families like ours to raise the funds to do so. Through the Cardiac Risk in the Young (C.R.Y) charity,

the Demaine Family have set up a ring-fenced memorial fund to collect donations for local screening.”

The cost is £13,500 for a two day screening event which will screen 200 youngsters. Funds raised have meant that Ann has been able to book two days at Bodmin College, where Tom went for sixth form and is now focusing on the Saltash/Liskeard end of the county where there are plenty of local people willing to help fundraise.

Caradon Gig Rowers are supporting a perpetual trophy for the men’s 3 Rivers Race in memory of Tom, and the Looe Club are hosting a new race ‘Round the Island’ to help raise funds. The inaugural day will be on 21 July this year, the day after Looe’s own regatta.

Family members and friends are running half marathons and organising rugby matches (Tom was part of a very sporty family!)

Local woman Kate Queally was planning her 600th wild swim and decided to ask for donations to go to #CRY4TOM, raising £600. As she said, she has four beautiful children and it made sense for them to be screened.

And a mutual friend of Ann and Kate’s from standing by the school gates, Helen Ralph has organised a sponsored cycle, 28-30 June, from Bristol to Land’s End. The final word goes to Ann; “I feel my efforts to raise awareness have been like throwing a pebble in a pond; you do not know where the ripples will reach, but they will reach a lot of people.

Taking Action to Make Others Happy Article by Kaye Bonner

Saltash young lady Isabella recently decided to have her long blonde tresses cut off and donated to the Little Princess Trust who will create it into a wig for a child without hair.

This was especially important and heart felt, as Isabella’s Nanny had Alopecia Universalis (all the hair on her body fell out) and she later sadly, passed away from cancer.

Isabella, decided to have her locks chopped, stating that she ‘wants other children to have her hair’.

Mum Kayleigh, said “I am really proud of Bella, she has become a very strong, intelligent and empathetic little girl. She was by my side when

my mum passed away and she often talks about her Nanny even though she was only seventeen months old when she died. After she had her hair cut, she said ‘imagine if Nanny was still alive and I could give my hair to her’. Kayleigh went on to add that ‘Isabella is such a sweet girl and I am so proud that she is taking action to make others happy at the age of seven.”

As a surprise reward, Isabella’s mum allowed her to have her ears pierced.

Hairstylist Kelly, at Bombshells in Saltash cut Bella’s hair (free of charge), cutting off 30 centimetres, so that The Little Princess Trust has enough to produce into a full wig.

Inspirational Thinking on Philosophy and Harry Potter

Year 10 and 11 students at saltash.net visited Oxford University to gain a deeper insight into what studying at this world class institution is really like, and to help give themselves the best chance in the Oxford admissions process.

Students braved a 5:30am start, with pillows and slippers at the ready for the long journey, to travel to Exeter College, Oxford. On arrival, they were taken on a tour around some of the most famous university facilities, including the Bodleian Library, the Bridge of Sighs, and the Sheldonian Theatre.

Following this was a myth busting session on the Oxford admissions process, as well as practical guidance about how to make successful university applications. Before lunch, a tour of Exeter College itself included the opportunity to take in the college gardens, as well as listening to the organ practice in the college Chapel.

Students were able to enjoy lunch in the college Dining Hall (which all agreed looked suspiciously

similar to the Great Hall at Hogwarts), before taking part in an academic taster session led by the Medieval and Modern Languages department, where they debated Absurdism Theory and Existentialism.

Mrs Lucia Gallie, who accompanied the students on the trip, was delighted with how the students relished this opportunity. “As always, our students were an absolute credit to themselves and to the school, showing Oxford academics what they were capable of, and confidently tackling some very challenging topics.

We hope to repeat this successful trip again in the future, and that this has inspired a new generation of potential Oxbridge candidates,� she said.

Anti-bullying Training

Saltash.net recently introduced a new House system, which divides the entire school (pupils and all staff) into four Houses named after local people or places: Brunel, Glanville, Tamar and Lynher. The aim is to encourage and install team spirit in the school. Leading these four teams are the House Captains. On Friday 26th February, ten House Captains took on their first responsibility as leaders by attending the Anti-Bullying training day at King Edward VI Community College in Totnes.

The event was run by The Diana Award, a charity inspired

by Princess Diana and her beliefs: they are a charity that, “encourages change in attitudes and behaviours for young people by young people”. Over 100 students attended the day, from all across Cornwall and Devon.

The day was based around training the students to become Anti- Bullying Ambassadors for their schools. The training gave the students the ability and the confidence to identify bullying both online and offline and how to deal with

various situations. Throughout the day students received inspiration, top tips and active ways to prevent bullying.

The team are now aware and fully equipped to safely help and support those children who are experiencing bullying.

The Ambassadors now need to put their training into practice at school and to inspire other students to change their attitudes and behaviours around bullying collectively.

They will also run assemblies for their Houses next term about anti-bullying, whilst being heavily involved in creating the school’s own Anti-Bullying campaign.

The teachers on the trip believe that, “The training was a fantastic opportunity for our student; they have gained so much confidence and empathy in this area and it will undoubtedly benefit all members of our school community”. After completing the training the ambassadors are full of enthusiasm and ideas for the new school Anti-Bullying campaign and they can’t wait to see their ideas put into place.

top companies compete in apprenticeship games

Cornwall Council is celebrating winning this year’s Apprenticeship Games after a fiercely fought competition with the region’s top businesses.

The Cornwall College Group CCB event, held at Duchy College Stoke Climsland, saw businesses and organisations with apprentices battle it out in a range of events testing their mental, physical and creative skills.

Each team took turns at a University Challenge-style quiz round with mascots and buzzers, a mocktail making and gateaux decorating challenge, archery, tractor driving, a blindfold team-building challenge and a military team challenge.

The event for apprentices and their employers across the South West was a welcome and fun addition to National Apprenticeship week, according to Cornwall College group principle Elaine McMahon.

“The Games are about bringing different businesses and apprentices together to celebrate their joint understanding of the value of apprenticeships,” she explained.

“Apprenticeships are a great way for people of all ages to earn while they learn, with opportunities to progress to a degree-level qualification.”

The event was also an opportunity for employers and apprentices to showcase the skills they’ve developed so far along their journey.

Technical manager at Wales & West Utilities, Steve Wright, said “it is great to attend an event like this to celebrate the importance of apprenticeships”.

“The Cornwall College Group provides fantastic support to our apprentices and today has been great fun for all the apprentices to get together,” he added.

Level 2 engineering apprentice at MARS Wrigley who finished with silver and won the communication award, Scott Kingston, experienced tractor driving for the first time and was really “proud of the time achieved in the challenge.”

“I really feel our communication skills have improved as a result of the day, I’d definitely love to be involved in this event in the future,” he added.

Apprentices from Cornwall Council were “thrilled” to come away as overall winners. Cornwall Council apprentice, Ellis Skinner, said she really “didn’t expect to win”. “We didn’t know what to expect at all ahead of the games, we came to have fun and we put 100% into every challenge as a team,” she added.

The day included a networking lunch to give businesses and sponsors the opportunity to engage and share their stories.

As well as the gold, silver and bronze awards up for grabs, the challenges are designed to put the team’s leadership, teamwork and communication skills to the test, with judges awarding those who have best demonstrated these skills on the day.

STUDENTS CRÈME DE LA CRÈME IN UK’S TOP YOUNG CULINARY COMP A haul of 13 medals including five golds were among the incredible achievements of local students at a prestigious regional cooking competition.

Professional Cookery students from Cornwall College Saltash took part in The Major Series South West regional heat, held at South Devon College.

They bagged an impressive five gold best in class medals alongside a best overall static exhibit, five silver and two bronze.

Former Callington Community College student, Sharna Bingham, 17, who is studying Level 2 Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, won both gold best in class and best overall static exhibit for her decorated gateaux.

Level 2 Hospitality student, James Easton, 21, has found the competition and his experience at college so far a “massive confidence boost”.

Development Chef and competition organiser, Wayne Harris, said it was a “pleasure to judge the students work from Cornwall College Saltash at the Major Series in South Devon on Friday.”

“Each year they raise the bar with the standards they set and the awards that they achieve, they do it with a smile on their face and the passion in their hearts,” he said.

“Students like this are the reason that makes me want to continue taking this competition and making it bigger and better every year. It is a testament to the College and the lecturers in all the hard work they put in and the faith shown in the upcoming talent in the area.”

does what it says on the tin: autumn colours, boats beached. It's a charming watercolour. And it deserves a closer look.

How does this picture hang together? Why does it 'work'? The sweep of the mooring lines catch the eye; lively flourishes, echoing and mirroring each other [some shown in blue]. Look further and there are other lines drawing your eye around the composition [a couple in yellow]; the masterstroke [in orange] runs diagonally across the whole picture, holding everything together.

Painters sometimes invert their work to forget the subject matter and check that it works as a coherent design.

Then those colours. Autumnal, yes, but, more importantly, mostly very similar throughout.

Whatever it's 'true' colour, the house is given a colour found in the hillside; it helps achieve harmony. The russet reds and browns of the main boat tone in too. Only the second boat sneaks in a dissenting blue. See how different the picture would have been if it had stuck to the colours of its neighbour.

Cotes du Rhone:

Revisiting an Old Favourite Wines, and in particular wine regions, are like cheeses: they go through phases of popularity. So it was with some trepidation that at a recent Just Be Friday evening wine tasting we looked at a wine region that was once so popular, but is now seemingly out of fashion.

Cotes du Rhone was once a safe wine bet and often the first red to be considered when scanning the off licence shelves.

Maybe it was over production in the recent past and a resulting variability in quality that turned us towards other wine regions… or maybe other wines, particularly those from the New World, simply upped their game.

At our tasting we found there has been a real improvement in the quality of Cotes du Rhone and they now offer some of the best value to be found in wine bars or on the supermarket shelves. Located in the relatively warm southern Rhone, these wines are based primarily on the lusciously fruity Grenache

grape… generally paired with Syrah, Carignan, Mouvedre or Cinsault. We tasted 4 wines of varying ages (see above).

At the recent Just Be free Friday 5 o’clock tasting we sampled the wonderfully vibrant 2016 Le Plan des Moines. It offers incredibly concentrated dark and red berry fruit flavours, with complex flavours that go on and on!

We also looked at some older wines from the region with interesting results. Cotes du Rhone can age but only in really good years and from a good producer. So we found the 2007 was past it with dried out fruit whereas the 2009s were beautifully smooth and spicy, and at their peak at 10 years old.

If you’ve not tried them for a while… revisit these lovely wines. Seek out: the superior Cotes du Rhone Villages on the label; the good years such as 2015 and 2016 and great producers such as E. Guigal at Waitrose or the Le Plan des Moines ‘La Borde’ at Just Be.

I spoke to Joe from his new home in LA to find out what was happening with his music now, and to learn more about how a boy from Saltash made this great leap.

H: So how did LA come about? What’s happening with your music career now?

J: LA came about when me and some friends from Soda Island were chatting about getting a temporary place to make writing music together easier, since we’re based pretty much everywhere around the world and LA just seemed like the best spot for what we were doing.

Joe Mawson moved to Saltash at the age of 11 and studied at Saltash.net Community School until 2016. He left school and focused on his music career, however he soon realised how tough the music industry is to not only make a living but to rise to the top.

He opted against university and was “too stubborn” to get a job, but his stubbornness and commitment paid off.

Now living in Los Angeles, the home of superstars, he co-runs a record label named “Soda Island” and has gained a huge online following for his creative futuristic style of electronic music under the alias “Refraq”. Joe started writing music at the age of 11 on an app on his iPod called Nanostudio. He was later influenced by the like of Pendulum and Skrillex, which developed

H: What have been the highlights of your music career so far?

J: Releasing the Soda Island album was really great, it was nice to see a product that all of us had put loads of effort into come to fruition and it get an awesome response in return.

Reaching one million monthly listeners on Delayde was also a really stand out moment.

The support came about so quickly it was really overwhelming for me considering I didn’t really have any set plans for the project.

Honestly, just being out in LA and writing music in a nice spot is incredibly humbling, as well as meeting people I’ve looked up to for a long time!

H: Tell us about your background in Saltash and how it affected your music?

J: I moved to Saltash when I was 11, and studied at Saltash.net school until 2016. I spent a solid year after that really struggling to earn a living through music since I’d decided against university and was too stubborn to get a proper job. I feel like I’m in a much better position now though and I’m super grateful for the opportunities

Despite not having much of a music scene, Saltash has some really great places for musicians. Livewire is such a good place for young musicians to learn instruments and music gear, it’s definitely provided me with a great space to come and write music or rehearse with friends over the years. Saltash is also a great place just to go out and walk. When I’m stuck on music, I’ll try and get out to Churchtown or the waterside with a little notebook and brainstorm new ideas.

Joe’s story is inspiring to say the least, he’s living proof that young talent from Saltash can rise to the top. Saltash is lucky to have institutions such as Livewire to help young people realise their dreams.

Let’s hope we hear more success stories of young people from Saltash.
