Wow, what a time I have had getting to know some of you better and spending more and more time across the river.

I’m pleased to say that due to popular demand, Cornerstone Vision are delighted to announce that the print run for Love Saltash has been increased from 6000 to 7000 over the last two editions. More people living in the area are getting our magazine through their letterbox, or picking up a copy from schools, cafes and local shops over the PL12 postcode.

As well as bringing the community together, these longstanding events also attract visitors from across the region – providing an opportunity to showcase all that is great about our town.

In this issue, news from the Heritage Museum, Ashtorre Rock, the Tamar Protection Society and the Tamar AONB is bursting from the pages – showing what a cultured bunch you are.

We also have our regular focus on the plethora of youth work provision in the town. It is truly impressive that Saltash Town Council took on the burden of financially supporting these invaluable professional youth work services when Cornwall Council withdrew Open Access youth work funding.

It’s so satisfying to be involved in a community that genuinely supports and helps all its members from the very old to the very young with such inclusivity.

At Love Saltash, we delight in celebrating all the organisations, people, events and businesses that make up this wonderful community – and we hope you enjoy celebrating with us.

Saltash - a great place to downsize!

Saltash has been listed in The Times as one of the top 20 places to downsize in the UK. The Times report says: “Saltash is an accessible Cornish coastal town, making it perfect for the active downsizer. Known as the gateway to Cornwall, this small town lies across the River Tamar from Plymouth and has decent shopping, including a Waitrose.

“Saltash has history (the house of Mary Newman, Sir Francis Drake’s wife, is a museum) and plenty to do, with a golf course at the nearby Whitsand Bay Hotel, and moorings and water sports at the Saltash Sailing Club.

“House prices Bungalows with river views sell for about £200,000, and larger detached homes for about £250,000. There are some beautiful arts and crafts homes for less than £1 million. The average house price is £201,253.”

The news has been welcomed by Saltash Town Council.

This year has seen Saltash Town Band putting in extra rehearsals in preparation for attendance at the most important contest in the Brass Band

calendar. Performing St Andrews Variations

by Alan Fernie and under the baton of Robert Julian, March 11 saw the Band travel to Torquay to compete in the Fourth Section of the West of England Brass Band Association Regional Championships.

Out of 20 competing bands Saltash came second, with comments such as ‘a very well controlled performance, lots to be admired’, ‘Lovely warm sounds’ ‘Nice warm sound to open’ and ‘A really good finish to an excellent performance’ from the two adjudicators. One brass band forum called the hymn section of the Band’s performance ‘chapeltastic’.

This means that the Band has qualified to compete in the National Finals held in Cheltenham on September 16th. This is only the second time in the Band’s history that they have achieved this.

For them to be able to make the most of this rare opportunity they will be planning plenty of fundraising events in the coming months. One of these will be the concert held at St Stephens Church on May 13, where not only this prize winning band will be performing, but also the talented Junior band and the debut of the beginners group, some of whom have only been playing for a few weeks.

To complement the Band’s success, they were delighted to receive two major funding awards towards purchasing new musical instruments. The Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation awarded the Band £300 and the Saltash Youth Council awarded the Band £250.

The Band is most grateful for such funding and continued support of the Band’s ongoing endeavours.

TAMAR CANOE ASSOCIATION

TASTER DAY

Tamar Canoe Association is hosting a free taster ‘Go Canoeing Day’ on June 4.

There will be sessions for ladies, men and families.

Registration for the female led ladies aged 16 plus and male led men’s aged 16 plus sessions takes place between 1pm and 2.45pm. There is also a mixed coach led family with children aged eight plus session, with registration starting at 2.30pm and finishing at 4pm. Booking is essential as spaces are limited. Tamar Canoe Association was established more than 30 years ago, with help from the then Boys Club who loaned the equipment.

The club was set up after a tragic accident in the early 1980s when an 11 year old was drowned whilst under unqualified supervision on the River Tamar.

The club provides safe kayaking and canoeing opportunities for youth groups, individuals and families aged from eight to 70 plus. The club is run by volunteers with a dedicated committee and qualified coaches all of whom give their time to keep the club running and provide a wide range of all year round activities.

The club operates from the slipway on Jubilee Green Saltash and have a range of assorted paddle

craft. It is an affiliated Top Club with Quality Mark status from British Canoeing, the awarding body who set standards.

There are regular club nights during the summer on Thursday evenings to all 1 star or above paddlers. Training in disciplines leading to British Canoeing qualifications is available for a small fee and membership rates are exceptionally good value for money. Saltash Press Gang is a group of enthusiastic, experimental printers working together in Saltash to create both figurative and abstract prints using a wide variety of techniques.

Following their debut show in 2015, they are making a welcome return with a Chris Waring new exhibition at Ashtorre Rock from 7 April to 25 May. Their work will be for sale.

Ashtorre Rock, nestling under the Brunel Bridge [PL12 4GT] is open daily from 10 to 4, offering refreshments and unparalleled river views.

Marvellous Mural Masterpieces One happy Saturday in early March, young people from Girlguiding Saltash, The Core and Saltash Environmental Action Group gathered at a workshop sponsored by Saltash Town Council and created some stunning murals to adorn the walls of the Town Council’s toilets. The cover of this magazine shows the mural that will hang proudly on the outside of Longstone Park toilets after the Town Council’s refurbishment of the inside

has been completed – hopefully within the next few months. The painting by Turner of ‘Saltash and the Water Ferry’ hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, but we will soon have vibrant, atmospheric paintings of Saltash on display here - work by Young Masters that rivals the work of the Old Master!

At Your Convenience in Alexandra Square If public toilets were a collectable set in Monopoly then Saltash Town Council would be in a good position to start charging, as it is about to open up public toilets in Alexandra Square.

Having taken over the management of the Waterside, Longstone Park and Belle Vue toilets from Cornwall Council last year, the addition of the Alexandra Square toilets to the Town Council’s ‘portfolio’ means there are now 4 public toilets in Saltash managed by the Town Council.

There was some debate among councillors about whether to charge for the use of the Alexandra

Square toilets, but in the end it was decided to keep them free. We’re not, after all, playing in a game of Monopoly! We are hoping that the new toilets will make the town even more welcoming, and encourage people to take advantage of all the excellent shopping facilities the town centre has to offer. So feel free to ‘spend a penny’ in one of the public toilets, and then spend some more pennies in our town centre!

Part of the deal when Waitrose and Lidl set up out-of-town supermarkets was that they would put money in to a fund for projects aimed at boosting footfall in to the town centre and improving employment in the area. Some money has been used on projects like the hanging

baskets on Fore Street, the Saltash May Fair and the refurbishment of the pontoon, but there is still money left in the pot. And some of it needs to be committed by January next year. So hurry along to the Guildhall with your ideas to make Saltash even better – we’d love to hear from you!

Peter Clements has been named as Saltash Citizen of the Year.

The former town councillor was named for his dedicated work on behalf of local campaigns and causes.

Members of the Student Union at Cornwall College Saltash have raised £250 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Staff and students held a huge raffle with all prizes been donated from local shops in Saltash along with a cake sale.

Student Liason Officer, Ali Gerry, said they were “all really proud of the amount they raised and pleased with how the whole college supported the fundraising.”

“We would like to thank all the businesses who kindly donated to the raffle, everyone was so kind and generous,” she continued.

Community Fundraiser for CHSW, Zoe Partridge, said “this is a really special donation for us to receive from Cornwall College Saltash.”

“On behalf of all the families we support I would like to thank everyone who donated to this raffle and those who brought tickets and have contributed to this generous donation.”

SALTASH Town council elections

Local council elections for both Saltash Town and Cornwall Council seats will be held on Thursday May 4.

Nomination papers for candidates had to be delivered by April 4, so details of which seats are to be contested and the people standing for the seats in Saltash will be available soon after that date.

There are four Town Council seats available in each of the North, South, East and West Saltash wards and a single seat in each of those wards for Cornwall Council.

Town Takeover Success The Growth Hub On The Road team traversed the length of the county with a Town Takeover in Saltash on March 30.

The team met inspiring businesses and made new contacts at the Tamar Business Breakfast hosted at the Quickstore, Saltash. This meeting is a magnet for businesses in the area wanting to develop their networks on both sides of the river and provided a great opportunity to link with businesses seeking to grow.

While the team was On The Road, the Growth Hub presented free workshops aimed at entrepreneurs in Saltash looking to know more about their customer base and unique value proposition.

Antonia Lowther of Saltash-based Carbon Pixel attended Oxford Innovation for Transform’s workshop on the Business Model Canvas which she found ‘really informative’. Maggie Kay of Thrivecraft Coaching found Lloyd Brina’s Canvas presentation “Really great - galvanising and inspiring”.

Growth Hub Town Takeover workshops are delivered by experts in their field: Jamie Smith, is a manager of

the Breakthrough start-up scheme and a co-founder of marketing and design agency, Eight Wire.

Joanna Shepherd aka Mrs Marvellous highlighted how his presentation ‘will really help me focus my digital marketing, making it more relevant and effective’. Aaron Monk of Diverse Events highlighted how relevant the sessions are to real-life business situations: “I have actual points to take away and work on”.

The workshops provide an excellent opportunity for businesses to sample the range of support available and highlight the Growth Hub’s role in being able to refer businesses to the scheme that best meets its business needs.

School Report Interview with Miss Littledyke Our team of reporters caught up with Headteacher Kate Littledyke for an in-depth interview, after her first full half-term in charge of saltash.net. The students were keen to learn about Kate’s vision for the school and the changes that await them as the school opens a new chapter in its history.

What are your main focuses for 2017?

I feel like I can smarten the school up more.

This is in the school’s environment; student’s presentation in their books; their attitude and focus and the uniform.

What inspired you to get into teaching?

There was a teacher when I was at secondary school that inspired me. He was called Mr Ord and taught French. He rewarded you when you were right and almost right, that’s what inspired me. I also like that when you are teacher, you are always learning.

What have you enjoyed about being a teacher at Saltash.net?

Our school is unique and the fact that it genuinely values the students and not just the grades. It takes into appreciation the mental health of the students and supports it. I also like that we have animals at the school. (We are getting owl boxes and fitting them with cameras, we are hoping that it will catch something interesting) What are you most proud of in the school?

The inclusivity of the school, there is something for everyone.

What was your favourite book when you were growing up?

It is the ‘What Katie Did’ series, I really enjoyed them. I loved that she was adventurous, it was almost like I was living the story.

When you were younger, what job did you want to have?

I wanted to be an actress.

What was your favourite subject at school?

English. This is because I loved reading and writing stories.

Who inspires you?

People who struggle but still achieve great things, even though they are in bad circumstances. People like Yusra Mardini (a Syrian refugee swimmer) and Malala Yousafzai (who fought for female education) inspire me.

Are you proud of the school’s links with the community and how will you carry them on?

Yes, I am very proud of the links with the community. I think I will try and get the students more involved with the community, in more social activities.

What excites you about the upcoming productions?

It already sounds amazing after 3 rehearsals. I like that all the productions the school does are musicals. I also love the fact our linked primary schools can take part too.

Dramatic Events! saltash.net has a thriving and very supportive drama department, and the school continues to create successful drama exam work and productions.

Recently, the sixth form students put on an amazing performance called Warchild, a very emotional performance about a boy called Sammy and how his life was affected by war. This stunning show moved audiences of students and staff.

“It was a fantastic performance and kept me on the edge of my seat,” said one Year 8 student. “I like the way they included the audience, and it felt so real!” And, right now, the whole school production Madagascar rehearsals are beginning. More on this in future issues!

Sports with Plymouth Raiders The Plymouth Raiders basketball team came to school on 8th March for a Gifted and Talented/ Most Able (in PE) workshop.

For the first hour there was a talk about healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle, which was very interesting. Then for the second hour, there was a practical session lead by the Plymouth Raiders. All those involved enjoyed the workshop thoroughly and said they would definitely do it again.

Who is the Make-Up Artistry course suitable for?

This is the perfect course for those who have a creative flare for make-up and would like to progress into a career as a make-up artist specialising in bridal services, prom or special occasions. You may work within a department store or make up company.

What skills will I learn on the course?

You will learn all the skills needed to join this industry from showcasing designs to hair artistry.

Can you tell us a bit more about the Swedish Massage course?

The Level 3 Certificate in Swedish Massage is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in how to provide the relaxing and stress relieving treatment of body

Yes you can if you would like to specialise in make-up or Swedish massage or you can go onto our Level 3 Beauty Therapy course. On this you will cover epilation, microdermabrasion, facial and body electrical and massage.

What could this qualification lead to?

You could be employed in a commercial beauty salon, a destination or day spa or you may choose to work independently as a Beauty (Swedish Massage) therapist.

Am I too old to re-train for these industries?

No one is too old to re-train, you can be any age as long as you are in good general health.

What will the courses cost me?

If you are 16-18 the courses are free, over 18 course fees are dependent on individual circumstances.

The majority of classes finish at 2.30-3pm, so that students with family commitments can fit their training in with their school schedule. Some students can claim for childcare, so please ring us to ask if this might apply to you.

Ms Littledyke being interviewed by Year 7 students

saltash.net students create the .net news for BBC School Report Year 7 students at saltash.net took part in the annual BBC School Report, creating a news bulletin which was posted on the school website.

Another group discussed reading and how important it is for young people, whilst the last group covered PE and sports at saltash.net.

Students from 7A3 had been working with English teacher Ms Baxter in their lessons in the lead up to School Report day, filming interviews and writing scripts to produce their news packages.

The annual School Report encourages schools around the country to embrace journalism, and teach students the basics of the trade.

The class was split into four groups, with each group choosing a news item which they were to cover.

The groups focused on a range of different subjects, with one securing an exclusive interview with Headteacher Ms Littledyke, whilst another explored the recent success of the school’s Youth Speaks team.

Ms Baxter was delighted with the class’ (pictured above) progress and their final products.

“The students have really enjoyed taking part in this project and their enthusiasm is wonderful to see. Hopefully we have some budding journalists in the making”, she said.

SUCCESSFUL MONTH FOR YOUNG PEOPLE OF SALTASH

In the month of March, the youth of Saltash have been up to exciting things, in which they have been somewhat credible within the local community.

This includes an astounding amount of awards won at the Plymouth and Saltash Speech and Drama Festivals for Essa School of Drama. The children were extremely successful at the annual festival, with over 20 awards given to those who attend Essa School of Drama.

As a result of their success, the children held a charitable presentation to display their certificates and trophies at their Saturday drama club, held at Saltash Handicapped and Disabled Centre (SHADO), in which they performed their pieces and attended a singing workshop led by local singer Flo Bonner, performing their song from the popular musical, Lion King in front of a welcoming audience.

Parents and residents of neighbouring St Anne’s Care Home were invited and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, with a few tears of joy. Astonishingly, the event raised £165 which was donated to SHADO, and received by Committee Chairman Teresa Orchard, to be used for environmental soft works to their garden area. It is fair to say that the children at Essa School of Drama are very committed and extremely talented.

Furthermore, recently, students from Saltash.net have been getting involved with the national charity, CHICKS, a charity which aims to provide free and fun holiday breaks for disadvantaged children. They are based in different retreat centres in Devon, Cornwall and

Derbyshire and are always encouraging volunteers over the age of 18 to participate and aid the children on their breaks.

Students from the school have had non-uniform days to fundraise for the worthy charity and have contributed to the charity’s aim of raising £1.5m this year. Moreover, representatives from CHICKS have recently given presentations about their aims and objectives within assemblies which have made pupils more aware of the charity and have perhaps appealed to those who may wish to volunteer, or to those who may benefit.

In the last youth council meeting, whilst we were sad to see Jenny Lightley, an inspiring chairman retire, we welcomed our new joint chairmen, Ffion Stanton and Camille Smith who we have great confidence in and who have a wealth of experience working with young people. Both Ffion and Camille will carry on Jenny’s legacy. We have great prospects for this year in continuing to offer the youth more opportunities, within the youth council’s remarkable 25th anniversary.

Raiders roadshow arrives at saltash.net Members of the Plymouth Raiders basketball squad visited saltash.net in March, as part of their Healthy Hearts Roadshow.

The squad delivered a presentation on healthy living, running through each food group and its benefits, for students from Year 8, 9 and The Zone.

SPRING

The recent showcase served to highlight the fact that groups have not been idle throughout the cold and wet winter months.

It was not only the indoor activities, the walking groups have endured wind, rain, hail and bog to continue exploring the delights of our countryside; the gardening group have continued to visit gardens witnessing, eventually, the first signs of Spring and the photography group have demonstrated that mist, wind and rain can provide great compositions.

However, Spring is now here and Summer just round the corner. This opens up great opportunities for more groups to venture outside and

explore different avenues for their work. The Hurlers project continues and the Geology group and other interested members will be visiting Carnglaze Caverns and Stonehenge as a thank you for their help with the work on Reading the Hurlers. All groups have a busy programme ahead for the Spring and Summer.

making the most of rail services News that a consortium of FirstGroup and Hong Kong based MTR has won the South West Trains franchise will be of particular interest to the Saltash Rail Users Group.

Copies of the timetable are delivered to homes across the town and also made available in public places. The next updated timetable will be available in late May, early June.

The group, chaired by Richard Bickford, has worked closely with the train operators in the past to ensure that Saltash passengers get the best possible service.

Richard added: “We were already in discussion with First Great Western to establish what was likely to happen as a result of the new franchise arrangement, so the picture is clearer,” said Richard.

“We want to ensure that we retain the direct services to Paddington and hopefully increase them.”

The FirstGroup-MTR consortium is due to take over the franchise in August with the contract running until 2024.

The Saltash Rail Users Group was formed in 2006 to lobby against proposed cuts in local rail services.

Having successfully fought against the cuts, the group then went a step further and secured direct services from Saltash to Paddington.

The group has also successfully argued for additional services for Saltash.

Richard said: “As a result of these successes we realised that we needed to do more to promote these hard-won services and now produce timetables twice a year with details of all the train services to and from Saltash.”

He said that there were a growing number of regular commuters who take advantage of the early morning services to get to Plymouth and stations further up the line. “The 7.47am service is also used by scores of children making their way to schools in Plymouth,” he added.

“It’s hard to estimate the number of passengers who use services from Saltash on a regular basis, but they are certainly at a healthy level. Hopefully more people will use the station in the summer months. It really can be a case of if we don’t use it we’ll lose it - so we will be doing all we can to spread the word.”

SIMON HOPES TO HELP Having run 130 miles (10 half marathons!) raising money for Livewire Youth project last year, Simon Wengradt is putting his running shoes back on, only this time he is taking part in the Plymouth based Hope24 running event and raising money for The Core Youth Project.

Simon is a great supporter of the youth work in Saltash and has worked as a youth worker in both Livewire and The Core in the past. Simon grew up in Saltash and was even a member of The Core himself when it was known as K2 youth centre!

He is a keen runner and has taken part in some gruelling events around the country.

On May 13th Simon will take part in Hope 24, which is a 24 hour running event at Newlyn Park in Plymouth, his aim is to run 100 miles over the 24 hours on their 5-mile running track. The youth workers and young people will be there to cheer him on and provide him with snacks and drinks

YOUTH COMMITTEE FOR JUNKYARD SKATEPARK

Local community interest company Junkyard Skatepark has set up its own Youth Committee, with help and support from the local youth.

Made up of 12 members, with ages ranging from 11 years old to 19, the Committee convened together last week to take a vote on who should become the Chair. Discussing it amongst themselves and working together as a dedicated team, the deciding vote came very easily and the unanimous votes were taken.

After the vote was held, it was official - Ryan Woolcock is the new Chair! Aged 18, Ryan is a very enthusiastic patron of Junkyard. Always with a positive attitude, Ryan has lots to contribute in regards to the runnings of Junkyard Skatepark. Following Ryan is Drew Brett, the new Vice Chairman, aged 13. Drew is confident, and is always supportive of the skatepark, with a great passion for promoting the great things going on there. Chosen to be Treasurer is Lewis Holding. Lewis is an 18 year old volunteer at Junkyard, with a great can do attitude. Trustworthy and loyal, Lewis is a hard worker with a great passion for the park. Finally, the Secretary was chosen to be James Lancaster, aged 17. James was notably picked for his role for his neat handwriting, which is always an asset to a Secretary, but James has also been a regular user of the Junkyard Skatepark since it opened two and a half

years ago. Patient and polite, James is a perfect fit to finalise the list of officers for the new Committee.

The rest of the Committee consists of Jay Andrews, Bailey Thomson, Ben Turner, Sam Walton, Justin Brown, Connor Broad, Jay Moore and George Ough, all of whom are based at local school Saltash.net.

With such a great group of young people on board, it’s exciting to see what ideas they will come up with for the future of the Junkyard Skatepark.

The Youth Committee’s first task was to do an information assembly with years 9 and 10 at Saltash. net which turned out to be a huge success. Despite how daunting it can be to stand up and talk to your peers, the Committee excelled in the opportunity and made Junkyard proud. Already, the Committee has been talking about event planning and funding bids, so watch this space for exciting developments!

Anyone between the ages of 11 and 19 are welcome to join the Junkyard Youth Committee. Junkyard Skatepark are always looking for a female perspective, so all genders welcomed! If you’re interested in finding out more about the Committee, please pop up to Junkyard Skatepark on a Youth Night for 11 to 19 year olds, which are held on Tuesdays at 7pm until 9pm, or Thursdays 7pm until 9pm.

A fitting tribute for George Stone RN

Laurence Binyon’s “We will remember them,” the Last Post and a minute's silence were all a part of a Service of Dedication for a new headstone for George Stone, who joined the Navy as a Boy Seaman at just 15 and died in 1939 serving on HMS Furious.

The Service took place in the Graveyard at St Stephen’s Church, Saltash. Led by Revd Catherine Sigrist also in attendance were the Mayor of Saltash Hilary Frank, serving RN personnel and Members of the British Legion.

The service came to fruition out of an ongoing project by Saltash Heritage trying to put identities to those listed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission lost in the First World War and buried in local graveyards.

One such person was George Stone who, although listed as a war casualty, was represented at St Stephen’s graveyard by a small family-provided cross which was now broken and in a dangerous state.

Peter Clements from Saltash Heritage followed this up with the Commission who after hearing their story agreed to supply one of their own headstones for George’s grave.

A service was arranged for March 28 and whilst the Armed Forces and Saltash would be represented there would be no-one from the family at the event.

So began an arduous search by Lizzy Sharpe-Asprey at the Museum and Local History Centre. Finally just four days before the event George’s two surviving daughters made contact. They were in Exeter.

So it came to be that Margaret Tucker, George’s eldest daughter, together with her son Graham, his wife Lesley, younger son Simon and grandson Oliver came down from Exeter with Nancy Chown, his youngest daughter with her son Steven and daughter Frances Allen.

Three generations in all.

Fran said: “It was good to make the journey down” and remarked that it was for a “Once in a lifetime event.”

Saltash Heritage will be joining other organisations at a Family History Day on June 3 at Liskeard Public Hall, from 1am to 3pm. Come along for free information and help with family history research.

ASHES just ONE GAME FROM rugby GLORY

Saltash Rugby Club’s first team is just one game away from the biggest day in the club’s history playing on the hallowed turf of Twickenham.

The Ashes are through to the semi-final of the RFU Senior National Vase knockout cup competition, having already secured the South West Counties and Southern Counties Trophies during their cup run.

They face an away trip on Saturday April 15 to Surrey side Farnham, who are runaway leaders of the London & South East Division 3 League.

Saltash won their way to the semi-final with a convincing quarter final win over Swindon College Old Boys. Farnham won a tense quarter final by a single point after their opponents Old Cranleighans missed a late conversion.

Saltash, who play in the Western Counties West League have had a good season in the league, but

their cup run has got players, officials and supporters buzzing with excitement.

Club press officer Nick Rich said: “Farnham play at a similar level to us and we are expecting a tough match. But the teams we faced in the last two rounds were unbeaten - until they played us!”

The team will have good support when they face Farnham, with a coachload of supporters travelling up on the day. “Others are heading up to Farnham on Friday and we expect a lot of supporters and former players from other parts of the country to be there on the day as well,” said Nick.

If Saltash overcome Farnham they will be playing at Twickenham on Saturday May 6, when there will be three other finals also taking place during the day, ensuring a massive crowd.

Sarah Coryton of Pentillie Castle, has been sworn in as the High Sheriff of Cornwall in the grounds of the historic castle.

Previous High Sheriff, Mrs Jane Hartley, handed over her badge of office to the new High Sheriff in a ceremony which took place in idyllic surroundings by the River Tamar.

The Office of High Sheriff is an independent nonpolitical Royal appointment for a single year. The origins of the Office date back to Saxon times, when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the king for the maintenance of law and order within the county, and for the collection and return of taxes due to the Crown.

“I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as High Sheriff,” said Sarah, who shot to fame nine years ago in the Channel 4 show, Country House Rescue,

and has since been instrumental in the development of Pentillie into an award winning luxury B&B and events venue. “It’s a historic and important role for Cornwall and I look forward to serving the Cornish community to the best of my ability.”

Sarah is the tenth High Sheriff of Cornwall connected with the Pentillie estate, and will be the 12th female in the office. She takes over from Jane Hartley of Holywell Bay, and is looking forward to working with local crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and the voluntary sector, supporting the Crown and the judiciary.

Pentillie is well known as a wedding and events venue, regularly winning awards for its luxury accommodation. Recently Pentillie has become famous as the setting of the new Dawn French Sky1 TV show, Delicious.

Do you enjoy exploring the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but wish you knew a little more about it?

The Tamar Valley Heritage Guides could help‌ Join Les Deering and Ann Marcer, Heritage Guides for the Tamar Valley area, over the next four months, on a series of walks throughout the Tamar Valley celebrating the very best of our area in Spring.

Les and Ann completed a nine-week course last year, led by local Blue Badge Guide, Chrissie Le Marchant. The course covered presentation skills, organising and running events, leading guided walks and research techniques. It was organised

as part of the Heritage Lottery funded Helping Hands for Heritage project.

This season, Les focuses his walks around the bridges and crossings of the Tamar Valley, while Ann explores the Bere Peninsula and Tavistock’s rich heritage. The walks programme begins in March and includes a history walk in Weir Quay, plus walks to explore Milton Abbot & Greystone Bridge, Sydenham Damerel & Horsebridge and

Gunnislake, New Bridge & Clitters, amongst other areas.

david newman - the music man David Newman Aka The Music Man, is to the Saltash baby and toddler scene what Ed Sheeran is to the rest of us. And quite frankly, with the crowds he attracts every Tuesday in the library, he may as well be playing a stadium gig.

For the past 9 years David has volunteered his time to entertain the youngest of our local children at Saltash library. He says it was difficult at the start to ensure the balance of activities was right as babies as young as 3 weeks and toddlers up to 5 years attend his sessions.

David has now mastered the use of bounce and rhyme and game songs to cater for his diverse audience and uses repetition to ‘give them what they know’. This familiarity also enables guardians to continue this type of interaction with their children at home.

David tells me he’s been offered larger spaces to accommodate the growing numbers but he feels it’s of utmost importance to keep this weekly event at the library so parents and children alike are immersed in the world of books and literacy.

And there is much more depth to David’s sessions than what meets the eye. An expert in Special Educational

Needs, David studied ‘interactional synchrony’ and how babies mirror the movements and facial expressions of their carers. During his studies, David explored the theory that the baby actually leads this sort of choreography by using sounds and movement that the mother then mimics, the baby then responds to and so on, thus a conversation is created. This type of early interaction (especially in first 6 months) is fundamental to future social development. It also strengthens the mother and baby bond, which is sometimes, as David states, inhibited in this age of mobile phones, screens and increasing amount of forward facing buggies. With this in mind, and his knowledge of education in general, David began providing tailored activities at Saltash library.

For me, the Music Man sessions are as much of a social event for mums as it is for children. New mums in particular may find them especially beneficial to avoid feeling isolated in those early days of parenthood.

COMPANY B At SALTASH MAYFAIR

It’s been a while since the euphoric joys of swing group Company B graced the streets of Saltash.

Last rolling into Livewire Youth Project in late 2016, the classic seven piece delivered a night of sweet, unadulterated brass, double bass and spot on vocals, delivered soulfully by frontman Dan Reid.

Now they’re back in action, due to bless our longing ears at this years May Fair!

Company B are a dying breed of musicians, pushing to keep the classic, beloved joys of swing alive with a combination of attitude, high energy and, above all, genuine love and cherishment for their audiences.

One after another, every performance pulls out all the stops and displays the band at their peak, ensuring a guaranteed blast for all and any that attend.

For those that recall last year’s May Fair, this won’t be the first time a WWII theme will be displayed at the event, as The Arrorbarrows gleefully showed off an impressive display of classic wheelbarrow mastery.

This year, however, things are only going up thanks to Company B’s taking to the stage, which will no doubt attract listeners old and new, inviting everybody to once more let down their hair, grab their flashiest kicks and get jiving!
