Rowers Tegan and Dan called up to represent Great Britain at Atlantic Challenge in 2020 Two talented young gig rowers have been selected to row for Team GB in a big international event in Russia.

Eighteen year old Tegan Baker, who started rowing when she was just eight years old, is a member of the Rame Gig Club and over the years has won many races and championships with them.

She has also rowed for Cornwall, winning every race.

Fellow Rame Gig Club member Dan Collins and Tegan will be part of a 20-strong Great Britain team taking part in the Atlantic Challenge in St Petersburg in 2020 - the first time it has been held in Russia.

Tegan thanked the Rame Gig Club for allowing

her to use the gym facilities and also for the last two years while she has been studying sport at Plymouth City College and was chosen to train with their elite athletes in April 2018.

Megan has launched a crowd funding page to help raise £1,000 towards funding the transportation of a Bantry Bay Gig to Russia. The fundraiser on Just Giving has already reached nearly £400 and she is hoping to raise more by holding a cream tea and a pub quiz in the coming weeks.

There have been a host of regattas in the past weeks that Rame Pilot Gig Club have attended and raced hard in.

Highlights include finishing ninth out of 22 at Falmouth, Mens A seventh out of 27 at Mounts Bay, Ladies Supervets third in the Plate final at Brixham Vets Championships, and Mens Supervets and Ladies Supervets coming in second and fourth at Brixham regatta.

However, outperforming the adults by far were the Juniors in the club.

The Under 15s finished second and the Under 18s third at Caradon Mixed Championships, while the Under 14s were first at Cattewater and Brixham regattas, second at Mounts Bay and Rame and third at the Under 14s Championships.

Meanwhile the Under 16s also finished first at Brixham, as well second at Cattewater and third at Looe. These were amazing results, and the improving placings of the B crews show that there’s depth as well as strength in the squad.

July saw Rame’s own regatta hosted at Cawsand Bay beach. A total of 23 clubs attended and joined in a packed day of racing and post-racing festivities with live music from Lost Cousins in the gig club until late into the evening.

Great fun was had by all and thanks to all those who worked so hard to make the day such a success. Thanks also to the rowers who camped or stayed over to make the most of all on offer.

As well as racing, Rame Gig Club enjoy social rowing and two memorable events this summer have been the row from Cawsand to St Germans to join in on their Quay Sailing Club Gala, and the Looe Island race. There was also a row out to ‘visit’ the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier which was in Plymouth Sound for a while.

Rame Gig Club welcomes new members to the rowing or fitness suite sections of the club.

Summer of Fun Until Sep 7 The Plymouth Summer of Fun in the city centre, brought to you by Plymouth City Centre Company, promises to be a summer full of entertainment for all the family. Plymouth Art Weekender Sept 27 to 29 Venues of all shapes and sizes across Britain’s Ocean City will play host to exhibitions, events and community based activities for the 2019 Plymouth Art Weekender. Founded in 2015 by Visual Arts Plymouth CIC (VAP), after the British Art Show 7 in 2011 saw a growing appetite for ambitious artistic activity in the city.

sees the Weekender partner with Nudge Community Builders, a community benefit society that owns, creates and runs activity in disused, underused or unusual urban spaces to lead to lasting positive change and community-led regeneration.

More than 30 leaders from the largest councils have signed an open letter to the Telegraph, urging the Prime Minister to follow up on his promise to ‘level up’ funding - with shire county areas missing out on £3.2bn of funding per year compared to other parts of England.

The letter follows the early pledges of the new prime minister that focused on levelling up funding in areas such as schools and infrastructure.

Leader of Cornwall Council Julian German said: “Cornwall has faced over £350 million in cuts since 2010. This letter adds weight to the considerable amount of work already put in by Cornwall Council to stand up for Cornwall and its residents.

“It is vital that we continue to press the government to ensure we get the funding that we need to enhance services for our most vulnerable residents.”

He added: “We also need to make sure Government delivers on its promise that Cornwall will be no worse off in terms of a replacement for European structural funding through the new Shared Prosperity Fund after Brexit; and for Government to give a green light to further devolution of funding and powers to local communities.”

Due to historically lower funding and deeper cuts to core grants, local councils in England’s rural and shire counties are the lowest funded authorities; receiving just £240 per person for public services such as social care, children’s social services, public health, bin collections and libraries - 60% less than residents in inner London (£601) and 46% less than councils in metropolitan and city authorities (£419).

New analysis from the County Councils Network (CCN) reveals that if the 36 county areas that make up the CCN were funded at the same per person average in England, they would be receiving an additional £3.2bn per year.

In the letter, senior councillors warn that ‘if the Prime Minister is to fulfil his pledge to level up opportunity in this country, then we must have a cast iron commitment to fair funding for underfunded and overburdened councils’.

Leaders say that unfair funding has led to a ‘perverse’ situation where some councils have been able to keep council tax rates as low as half of what residents in other counties are being charged.

The average county Band D household’s yearly bill is £1,562, compared to £700 in some parts of London. Unless the new Government provides extra resources and a commitment to fairer funding, CCN warns that councils will have to cut back on frontline care services, repairs to potholes, streetlights and youth and Sure Start centres .The letter adds weight to the recent launch of ‘Britain’s Leading Edge’, a special interest group which brings together a coalition of rural local authorities and MPs to argue the case for equality of consideration in social and economic support in all areas of the country.

Summer fair is done and dusted...now it’s time to starting thinking about Santa!

The Lions Summer Fair has once again come and gone for 2019. All the months of organising and planning all came together during a frenzied period of super sunny weeks and then on Thursday and Friday it rained more or less continually, and people were beginning to wobble at the knees.

But on the Saturday, the sky cleared and after a brief shower the sun shone and a good day was had by all.

We hope that the altered field set up this year was to the stall holders advantage and everyone had an uninterrupted view of the arena and everything else that was on offer.

We were lucky to have the local car club enthusiasts along to the fair and they displayed their mechanically enhanced vehicles, and they were happy to assure everyone that they were an adult and responsible club.

The fair was also the place to enrol in the new Carnival King and Queen competition, and several entries were made and the chosen girls and boys will be seen during the Torpoint Carnival.

The Lions Club would like to thank all those attending the event and wish to add that all the profits made on the day will go directly into our charity pot for use in our community.

Following the fair is a traditionally quiet time for our club and we try to busy ourselves with other things and try to help out with other events within our Lions area stretching from Looe and Liskeard in the West,

Report by Lion Stephen Murray Callington and Launceston in the North to Saltash in the East, so we have a fair amount of miles to travel if needed. And now we are currently getting ready for Santa’s arrival near Christmas, and for the lights switching on in Torpoint.

We had a very successful coffee morning out at the Kingsand Institute and made some much needed funds for our charity pot. Our thanks go to all those people who regularly attend those coffee mornings each week, not only for our group but for all the fund raisers that use the venue, it’s good to see all the same local people mixed with holiday makers all buying tea and coffee, raffle tickets and bric-a-brac.

The Lions club were selected by the Co-op in Torpoint some time ago for some funding and we took the opportunity to purchase a bench seat for the local residents and we now hear that it is to be installed along the river front at the bottom of Carbeile Road.

The club has several wheel chairs ready for use for anyone needing them and Lions Chris, Annette and vice president Judith came along to display them (see photo). There is no charge for their use and all we ask is that if you have had need of one of them then you may wish to make a small donation to our charity pot.

Getting going green with creative ideas for carnival parade Are you creative? Do you like to dress up and have some fun? If you answered yes, why not enter Torpoint’s Annual Carnival on September 14 either as an individual, pair, group or even on a float!

This year’s theme is Let’s Go Green reflecting the town’s growing desire to increase awareness around recycling and using sustainable products.

So get thinking about how you could create a costume that fits this criteria. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third places in each category and the fun of being included in the Carnival Parade.

Alongside the parade, Cambridge Field will be filled with all sorts of groups who will offer activities and prizes to be won, with a Duck Race at the end of the day.

Organisers are also looking to set up a Friends of Cambridge Field community group to try and improve the park - so if you would like to be involved in this then please come along and talk to us on the day.

Although the Church is doing its utmost to gain various grants to help with repair the fear, should the amount not be reached, is that the church will close and the building sold off.

Cornerstone Church has stood in Torpoint since 1795, the first church building to be built in the growing town of Torpoint. It was built following a visit from John Wesley and the original indenture for the building can be seen in the church.

Originally this was known as a Wesleyan then Methodist building, however, in the 1980s the Methodists and United Reform Churches joined together and saved the building which had been condemned, and after a major refurbishment, was opened as a joint place of worship with the name of Cornerstone in the 1990s.

A crack has appeared in one of the boundary walls of Cornerstone Church in Macey Street - and it will cost more than £55,000 to repair.

Anyone who has walked along Macey Street to the rear of Cornerstone Church might be aware of the scaffolding and covering of a boundary wall. This has been erected because a crack has appeared in the wall during the last year which is now in urgent need of repair.

The problem for the congregation is that the boundary wall is Grade 2 Listed as is the rest of Cornerstone church.

As a listed building this means the repair is more complicated and therefore more expensive.

Lisa, who runs Hartbeeps, has two children of her own aged 11 and six having grown up in South East Cornwall with a passion for the countryside, having fun and most importantly her family.

The popular Hearts Kitchen can be found in Fore street, right opposite the Post Office. Step inside and be transported back to an era when the customer is the priority and you’ll be greeted with a welcome smile from attentive staff.

There is always a tantalising display of ‘Hearts made’ cakes on the counter, brownies, flapjacks,rocky road and kids cupcakes, not forgetting vegan and gluten free customers, be quick as they sell out fast! But don’t worry they are all replaced daily as our in house chefs cook another tasty batch.

Once inside customers can explore the cafe, which has seating for 35, a free children’s playroom full of toys, books and their own TV showing CBeebies.

In the main area there is TV showing world news, ‘free’ wifi, and free daily newspapers.

Outside Hearts Kitchen has seating for 25 with lovely views of the Tamar from the decked and small garden area.

Hearts is a family business run by local girl Jo Jackson, who took over the helm in 2015. She now has a team of 20 happy ‘Hearts Angels’ who thrive on being, and serving the best local produce.

Everyone is welcome, from early birds at 8am wanting a take away bacon bap and a cappuccino on their way to work, or the mums having breakfast and a chat after the school run, to the ladies that lunch coming in for an iced latte and one of the freshly prepared daily specials.

The menu includes all day breakfasts, sandwiches, home made soups and a children’s

Students celebrate their successes Staff at Torpoint Community College would like to say a huge congratulations to all students who collected their results on August 15 for having done so well.

For a number of subjects this was the first time sitting new style two year A levels and these courses are significantly more challenging.

Staff and students alike celebrated some superb achievements with a higher than normal number of students applying for university. Over 75% of the year group applied for university this year with most achieving their first choice places.

Early indications suggest that the college is doing better than in previous years and is likely to be in line or better than national averages with many individuals doing exceptionally well.

As with last year, apprenticeships were very popular and a significant number of students hedged their bets and applied for both university and an apprenticeship. The majority of students who applied for university have achieved their preferred choice.

A number of students did particularly well this year. Elouise Baker achieved grades of A, A and B in Biology, Psychology and Chemistry and is intending to study medicine at the University of Exeter. Saowalak Jansongkroh and Finley-Mae Stainfield achieved A grades in Art, Craft and Design and both now intend to pursue careers Happy students Gareth and Grace

Alongside A Level success, once again the Sports CAMTEC students achieved several excellent results with Grace Cowd and Alex Richardson in particular achieving Distinctions on a number of units.

£2,000 grant is awarded for Sparrow Park improvements

I am delighted to report the Town Council has been awarded £2,000 as part of Cornwall Council High Street Heroes Grant Funding.

The bid explained our desire to improve Sparrow Park. Incremental improvements to Sparrow Park have been made by removing the mosaic and replacing this with camellia plants, gifted to us by Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park.

The long strip adjacent to Antony Road has recently been cleared and replanted with agapanthus plants and poppies. The larger sections at Sparrow Park need more investment and, with this in mind, the funding was applied for. Sparrow Park is a lovely spot to sit and watch the world go by and is an area that is enjoyed on a daily basis by many of our residents.

Another collaboration with Cornwall Council has enabled us, as part of the Community Network Area SOS scheme, to raise and mobilise a volunteer army to assist with the clear up of the Thanckes Park Tennis Courts and make safe the

I have recently toured Devonport Dockyard, this is in preparation for an Area Emergency Planning Operation to be held next month.

On September 28 we will be marking the 10th Anniversary of the opening of Bénodet Park. Throughout the summer holidays the tea hut has been open at Bénodet Park and it has been lovely to watch the stream of people and young families enjoying this special, walled garden.

Again, I would like to thank the volunteers who have ‘manned’ the tea hut throughout the year.

I will be approaching community groups in the near future, to invite them to take part in a community clean up in relation to our ‘Plastic Free Torpoint’ project. I would like to ask each community group to think about which area they would like to target.

The date for this clean-up is likely to be during October half-term.

Final preparations have been made for the Torpoint Town Carnival which is to be held on Saturday September 14 starting at 1pm in Cambridge Field.

Preparations have started in the run up to Christmas. The lantern making workshop will be running on Saturday November 23.

Last year the first lantern workshop proved to be a success and was enjoyed by children and adults.

This year, the main hall in the Council Chambers has been booked in anticipation of even larger attendance numbers.

The unveiling of the War Memorial in Torpoint is taking place in September and families and relatives of the fallen are being invited to attend.

The unveiling is on Sunday September 22 and families and relatives who would like to receive a personal invitation to the event are encouraged to contact the Town Clerk - see details below.

The memorial is intended to provide an eloquent, silent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the community and the sacrifices it has made in conflicts of the 20th century and later.

Following the Town Council’s request for funding, the good news is almost £3,000 has been received, more donations are always welcomed and it is hoped to purchase a memorial bench to be placed on Ferry Hill, near to the granite monuments.

The unveiling even will start with the Parade marching down Antony Road from Albion Road with the service starting at 2.30pm.

Following the service the Parade will march back up Antony Road, after which refreshments will be served in the Council Chambers.

This is advance notice that for everyone’s safety road closures around Eliot Square will be in place for the duration of the service.

Youngsters from the Torpoint Sea Cadets Band put on an award-winning display at the National Sea Cadet Band Contest at the Tower of London at the beginning of August, claiming the title of the second best band in the country, despite only forming one year ago.

Eighteen teenagers from the Torpoint Sea Cadet unit, based within HMS Raleigh, represented the South West region of the UK at the National Marching Band Contest held in the moat of the Tower of London earlier this month, having

The band were joined by an additional few cadet musicians from Cornwall and the local area in order to form a ‘massed area band’.

Celebration of young art in Millbrook Family, relatives and friends came together to celebrate the achievements of students of the Rame Peninsula Art Friday Art Club at their exhibition in Millbrook.

The young art students aged from nine to 11 years old were exhibiting work at their end of course exhibition which took place in the garden setting of Rame Peninsula Art. The youngsters chose the name for the exhibition themselves which was called ‘I Don’t Care If It’s Crazy!’ In addition to showcasing their work, the students were also awarded a Trinity College of London, Arts Award Certificate, which was presented to them by Rame Peninsula Art principal and lead, tutor Alan Lemin.

The students who covered a range of art, design and craft practices are all based within the local Millbrook community and attend the art club as an after school activity.

Alan Lemin said: “I work with students of various age ranges to explore and make art

which is significantly different from what these young people would experience at school. “On this course we examined the work of various artists and made studies in painting, gesture drawing, textures, plaster, clay and painted marble techniques. Given their age and application, the standard of work was truly excellent�.

Alan and his wife Annette have been running courses from their home- based studio school The Woodshed Studio, for a number of years and not just in Art. Annette who is a qualified Science and Mathematics teacher also teaches within the studio setting, providing tuition on a one to one and small group basis for students of various age ranges.

Alan and Annette took early retirement from their respective college and school in 2015 and since then have worked tirelessly in providing a service for students within

Alan said: “Annette and I have worked in education for many years and although at present we run our own bespoke classes, it is our ambition to bring the teaching of art, mathematics and science closer together. “Our Arts Club model has proved an enormous success, providing as it does a home for students to meet new friends and make work in a fun and creative environment.

This is the sort of model that we are currently working on and should wish to extend in a mathematics and science format.�

Sheviock residents celebrate opening of Memorial Hall extension - thanks to £73,000 grant from the Lottery

Residents and local groups came together in August to celebrate the official opening of the new extension of the Sheviock Memorial Hall.

The extension was made possible by a £73,000 grant from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities fund. The ceremony was performed by Sir Richard Carew-Pole.

Enid’s special day A lady who has lived all her life in Kingsand, celebrated her 100th birthday in August.

Enid Grace Verran was born on August 14 1919 in Fore Street, Kingsand and has lived there throughout her whole life.

At the age of 15 in 1934 she went to work at Mount Edgcumbe House as a housemaid, which is where she met her husband John, who was a footman. They were married for 62 years, until John, sadly passed away 15 years ago Enid was at Mountt Edgcumbe House when it was bombed during the Second World

War. The staff were then moved to Cotehele House, which was also owned by the Mount Edgcumbe family.

In the early 1900s Enid’s father James Marks opened up a young men’s working club in the Institute. He died when Enid was just six years old.

Enid enjoyed a very happy 100th birthday, with all her family and friends, at her daughter and son-in-law’s house in Kingsand, where she now lives and was delighted to receive a special birthday card from the Queen.

Cawsand Bay Sailing Club held its annual Regatta over the first weekend in August with a total of five races, around large courses set within the Bay, marked out with large inflatable marker buoys.

The club’s distinguished young sailor Noah Rees – who has sailed with the club since he was 10, and is now a national champion – encouraged four friends from Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club to enter the regatta, who were welcomed warmly – perhaps a little less so when they saw how fast they sailed!!

Both wind and sea were quite ‘lively’ for the three Saturday races, but the sea state was more subdued on Sunday.

Noah Rees, (Aero7), won four of the five races, to be beaten narrowly in the fourth race

by Steve Roberts, (Aero7).

The overall results were: 1, Noah Rees 2, Steve Roberts 3, Richard Woods, (all sailing RS Aero 7s) 4, and fastest RS200, were Ian Turpitt and Fleur Young 5, Anthony Smith (Laser) 6, Andrew Malloy and Jon Knowles (2000). The award for the Best Junior went to Finlay Morgan in his Laser 4.7.

After the racing, certificates were presented to the winners by Club Commodore Andrew Malloy. A special certificate was presented to young Grace for successfully completing her very first race crewing for her dad Mark Lentell. Dinghy-cupcakes made by Gemma Morgan and personalised by son Finlay with each sailor’s sail markings, were enjoyed by all. A ‘sweet’ end to a ‘sweet’ weekend’s racing.

Celebrating Black Tot Night with the RNA The Royal Naval Association Torpoint & Rame Branch’s annual Black Tot Night was held in July.

On completion of the formal part of the meeting, the chairman, Shipmate Derek Nash, declared ‘Up Spirits!, which signalled the commencement of the issue of the tot (at a price, of course).

The ‘ration’ was ceremoniously and traditionally issued by Rum Bosun Shipmate Simon Dungey, who performs this role every year, very smartly rigged in the full mess undress of a Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer.

The rum is served from a wood and brass-clad container, known as a fanny, and measured out using a traditional cup, sometimes called a jigger.

Another tradition on Black Tot Night is the ‘Nearest the Bottle’ competition, where Shipmates roll 20p coins across the deck towards a bottle of rum. The effort deemed closest wins the bottle. On this occasion, the winner was none other than the Rum Bosun himself – however, Simon donated his prize to a fellow Shipmate.

The Branch has received the very sad news that former Branch Chairman, Shipmate Mike ‘Jan’ Tarrant, crossed the bar in the early hours of August 16, following a long period of illness.

Jan, who was 90, was a stalwart of the Branch for many years since its foundation and he will be very much missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his widow, Betty, his family and loved ones. RIP Shipmate.
